  • I want to share with you why I believe you do.
  • 00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:07.260
  • The "(Un)qualified" series is for every person who's tired
  • 00:00:07.270 --> 00:00:10.280
  • of dealing with the frustration
  • 00:00:10.290 --> 00:00:12.140

  • (female announcer) They are the heroes of the Bible.
  • 00:00:20.260 --> 00:00:23.090
  • They are immortalized, sanctified, revered.
  • 00:00:23.100 --> 00:00:27.180
  • They were God's chosen people, the founders of the church.
  • 00:00:27.190 --> 00:00:32.050
  • What were their qualifications?
  • 00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:34.130
  • A speech impediment, a denial of faith, an affair.
  • 00:00:34.140 --> 00:00:39.270
  • Who were these heroes?
  • 00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:41.240
  • A murderer, a prostitute, a liar and a schemer.
  • 00:00:41.250 --> 00:00:47.060
  • In the eyes of the world, they were unqualified.
  • 00:00:47.070 --> 00:00:50.000
  • But God has a history of using broken people to do big things.
  • 00:00:50.010 --> 00:00:54.020
  • And he still does it today.
  • 00:00:54.030 --> 00:00:56.280
  • I came to our church recently and asked for prayer.
  • 00:01:01.250 --> 00:01:04.060
  • You know, as a pastor, I feel like that my job
  • 00:01:04.070 --> 00:01:07.230
  • is to minister to the people,
  • 00:01:07.240 --> 00:01:09.100
  • and so I don't--I don't like to put my personal burdens
  • 00:01:09.110 --> 00:01:11.130
  • on my church.
  • 00:01:11.140 --> 00:01:13.030
  • But we had a situation in our family that I thought
  • 00:01:13.040 --> 00:01:15.200
  • it would be appropriate to call the whole church
  • 00:01:15.210 --> 00:01:18.080
  • to pray for for support and encouragement.
  • 00:01:18.090 --> 00:01:21.030
  • My kids had banded together and decided they wanted a dog.
  • 00:01:21.040 --> 00:01:26.220
  • And it became a prayer request
  • 00:01:26.230 --> 00:01:30.020
  • because the pressure became so great from all sides.
  • 00:01:30.030 --> 00:01:34.080
  • When you have a 10-year-old and an 8-year-old
  • 00:01:34.090 --> 00:01:37.230
  • and a 5-year-old little girl simultaneously begging you
  • 00:01:37.240 --> 00:01:42.230
  • for a dog, it's relentless.
  • 00:01:42.240 --> 00:01:46.030
  • And the thing about it is-- now, I'm a good dad.
  • 00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:49.270
  • You have to understand I consider myself
  • 00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:51.260
  • probably in the top ten percentile.
  • 00:01:51.270 --> 00:01:54.120
  • I mean, I would put myself up against most dads on a good day.
  • 00:01:54.130 --> 00:01:58.200
  • And yet, there's no chance I'm getting them a dog.
  • 00:01:58.210 --> 00:02:02.200
  • They tried everything.
  • 00:02:02.210 --> 00:02:04.040
  • They tried manipulation.
  • 00:02:04.050 --> 00:02:06.000
  • My middle son, Graham, he was the primary culprit.
  • 00:02:06.010 --> 00:02:09.000
  • I think--I think he was the ambassador.
  • 00:02:09.010 --> 00:02:11.240
  • He's the one that they sent out.
  • 00:02:11.250 --> 00:02:13.230
  • And the reason they sent him out is because he's got--
  • 00:02:13.240 --> 00:02:17.210
  • he's got techniques.
  • 00:02:17.220 --> 00:02:19.070
  • He's got--he's almost got puppy dog eyes.
  • 00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:21.010
  • He's got a little raspy voice.
  • 00:02:21.020 --> 00:02:22.270
  • He just has a way about him.
  • 00:02:22.280 --> 00:02:24.210
  • And that middle child thing, he's just--he's very subtle,
  • 00:02:24.220 --> 00:02:27.080
  • but he's sneaky.
  • 00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:29.000
  • Stealth, but he's just--he just worked me over and over again.
  • 00:02:29.010 --> 00:02:32.120
  • When I would wake up in the morning,
  • 00:02:32.130 --> 00:02:34.000
  • the first thing I would hear from him not,
  • 00:02:34.010 --> 00:02:35.290
  • "I love you, dad."
  • 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:37.090
  • Not, "Thank you for this beautiful home."
  • 00:02:37.100 --> 00:02:38.270
  • Not, "I appreciate the food that you fed me last night,
  • 00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:40.210
  • "and the fact that there are granola bars in the pantry
  • 00:02:40.220 --> 00:02:42.210
  • for me this morning."
  • 00:02:42.220 --> 00:02:44.150
  • The first thing out of his mouth, "Can I have a dog?"
  • 00:02:44.160 --> 00:02:47.030
  • When I would get home from work, I would be met in the garage.
  • 00:02:47.040 --> 00:02:49.280
  • Not, "Dad, how was your day?
  • 00:02:49.290 --> 00:02:51.130
  • "Thank you for going forth into the world
  • 00:02:51.140 --> 00:02:53.000
  • "and bringing home provision for us,
  • 00:02:53.010 --> 00:02:54.220
  • that we might live and be sustained."
  • 00:02:54.230 --> 00:02:56.190
  • "Can I get a dog?"
  • 00:02:56.200 --> 00:02:57.290
  • One day, I came home, there was a sign on the garage door,
  • 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:01.190
  • "I want a dog."
  • 00:03:01.200 --> 00:03:02.290
  • Now, we've gone from asking to demanding.
  • 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:05.190
  • Now, this is a hostage negotiation situation.
  • 00:03:05.200 --> 00:03:09.050
  • We're no longer--we're no longer pleading.
  • 00:03:09.060 --> 00:03:11.240
  • Now, we are simply declaring what we want.
  • 00:03:11.250 --> 00:03:14.240
  • So, I told my church, "Pray for me.
  • 00:03:14.250 --> 00:03:17.080
  • And the reason I want you to pray for me
  • 00:03:17.090 --> 00:03:18.230
  • is because under no circumstances
  • 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:21.260
  • are my children getting a dog.
  • 00:03:21.270 --> 00:03:24.080
  • And it's not because I'm not a good dad,
  • 00:03:24.090 --> 00:03:26.080
  • and it's not because I don't love them,
  • 00:03:26.090 --> 00:03:28.000
  • and it's not because I don't want good things for them.
  • 00:03:28.010 --> 00:03:30.080
  • It's because I know my family, and we are not a dog family.
  • 00:03:30.090 --> 00:03:36.050
  • We are not a pet family.
  • 00:03:36.060 --> 00:03:38.250
  • Graham has an iguana that he barely keeps alive.
  • 00:03:38.260 --> 00:03:44.050
  • He can barely give this sucker three crickets a day, okay?
  • 00:03:44.060 --> 00:03:47.280
  • Or it's a gecko or it's something,
  • 00:03:47.290 --> 00:03:49.230
  • but I know that the thing has almost died several times.
  • 00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:52.120
  • If you can't take care of the gecko,
  • 00:03:52.130 --> 00:03:54.140
  • I'm not getting you a German shepherd.
  • 00:03:54.150 --> 00:03:56.250
  • So no, it's my final answer.
  • 00:03:56.260 --> 00:04:01.110
  • You don't want a dog.
  • 00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:03.130
  • You don't--you wouldn't even like a dog.
  • 00:04:03.140 --> 00:04:06.190
  • You like the concept of a dog, the concept of a pet.
  • 00:04:06.200 --> 00:04:13.170
  • But sometimes, there's other stuff
  • 00:04:13.180 --> 00:04:16.060
  • that comes along with the dog.
  • 00:04:16.070 --> 00:04:18.160
  • There's the concept of a dog that's cute,
  • 00:04:18.170 --> 00:04:22.290
  • but who's going to clean up the other stuff?
  • 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.140
  • There's a big difference between falling in love with a concept
  • 00:04:27.150 --> 00:04:32.040
  • and making a commitment.
  • 00:04:32.050 --> 00:04:34.020
  • Because a dog is a commitment.
  • 00:04:34.030 --> 00:04:36.280
  • I've had a dog.
  • 00:04:36.290 --> 00:04:38.260
  • It's a commitment.
  • 00:04:38.270 --> 00:04:40.090
  • It's a commitment to train it.
  • 00:04:40.100 --> 00:04:41.280
  • It's a commitment not to kill it.
  • 00:04:41.290 --> 00:04:44.120
  • It's a commitment to keep the dog
  • 00:04:44.130 --> 00:04:45.220
  • from killing its stupid self.
  • 00:04:45.230 --> 00:04:47.270
  • Can you tell how I feel about this?
  • 00:04:47.280 --> 00:04:49.110
  • I'm very passionate that there are some people
  • 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:51.100
  • who are just not dog people,
  • 00:04:51.110 --> 00:04:53.040
  • and I am not a dog dad,
  • 00:04:53.050 --> 00:04:55.000
  • and my children are not dog kids.
  • 00:04:55.010 --> 00:04:56.260
  • And so, I told Graham, "If you can keep your room clean
  • 00:04:56.270 --> 00:04:59.140
  • "for 3 days straight,
  • 00:04:59.150 --> 00:05:01.080
  • "then maybe I'll consider getting you a dog.
  • 00:05:01.090 --> 00:05:03.000
  • "But until you can demonstrate some form of commitment,
  • 00:05:03.010 --> 00:05:05.150
  • this conversation is over."
  • 00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:08.130
  • And for now, I think I've gotten them to shut up
  • 00:05:08.140 --> 00:05:12.100
  • because what's often attractive in concept form
  • 00:05:12.110 --> 00:05:19.010
  • is a lot different when it comes to commitment.
  • 00:05:19.020 --> 00:05:22.260
  • Now, we've been talking for a whole series
  • 00:05:22.270 --> 00:05:25.030
  • about how God uses broken people to do big things.
  • 00:05:25.040 --> 00:05:28.070
  • And my premise has been that there is a calling on your life.
  • 00:05:28.080 --> 00:05:32.170
  • And when I talk about that concept of calling,
  • 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:36.080
  • I notice that people get excited,
  • 00:05:36.090 --> 00:05:37.270
  • regardless of their age.
  • 00:05:37.280 --> 00:05:39.130
  • I notice that regardless of economic status or ethnicity,
  • 00:05:39.140 --> 00:05:44.000
  • people seem to get excited about calling.
  • 00:05:44.010 --> 00:05:46.030
  • College students get excited about calling.
  • 00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:48.130
  • Moms get excited about calling.
  • 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:50.040
  • There's something about believing that my life
  • 00:05:50.050 --> 00:05:52.050
  • could be on purpose,
  • 00:05:52.060 --> 00:05:54.060
  • believing that there's something that I'm meant to be,
  • 00:05:54.070 --> 00:05:56.000
  • and meant to do, and meant to accomplish,
  • 00:05:56.010 --> 00:05:57.210
  • and that I would wake up with a sense of assignment.
  • 00:05:57.220 --> 00:05:59.260
  • It sounds sexy.
  • 00:05:59.270 --> 00:06:01.120
  • I want a calling, a high calling.
  • 00:06:01.130 --> 00:06:03.290
  • I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God
  • 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.030
  • in Christ Jesus.
  • 00:06:06.040 --> 00:06:08.010
  • How many want to fulfill your calling?
  • 00:06:08.020 --> 00:06:09.110
  • And hands go up when I ask that.
  • 00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:12.120
  • But when it comes to the commitment,
  • 00:06:12.130 --> 00:06:15.160
  • there's often a disconnect.
  • 00:06:15.170 --> 00:06:20.200
  • To illustrate this, let's look at an Old Testament passage,
  • 00:06:20.210 --> 00:06:24.230
  • one of my favorites.
  • 00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:26.130
  • I even wrote a book about this Bible character called Elisha.
  • 00:06:26.140 --> 00:06:31.280
  • And his story is told in the pages of the annals
  • 00:06:31.290 --> 00:06:33.280
  • of 1 and 2 Kings.
  • 00:06:33.290 --> 00:06:35.230
  • We're just going to take a small snippet of this story.
  • 00:06:35.240 --> 00:06:37.270
  • There's no way I can get cross the magnitude of his ministry
  • 00:06:37.280 --> 00:06:42.180
  • in this one session, but let me try to communicate
  • 00:06:42.190 --> 00:06:45.060
  • something about calling.
  • 00:06:45.070 --> 00:06:47.250
  • And I want to use as a title for this challenge
  • 00:06:47.260 --> 00:06:51.080
  • that I want to bring to you today
  • 00:06:51.090 --> 00:06:53.040
  • "The Test Before the Transfer."
  • 00:06:53.050 --> 00:06:57.040
  • The test before the transfer.
  • 00:06:57.050 --> 00:06:58.250
  • Because the Bible says that in verse 9 of 2 Kings chapter 2
  • 00:06:58.260 --> 00:07:03.030
  • that Elijah and Elisha were crossing over.
  • 00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:06.100
  • Now, Elijah, you think of him kind of like the mentor.
  • 00:07:06.110 --> 00:07:09.150
  • Elisha is the successor.
  • 00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:12.100
  • He's going to take over Elisha--Elijah's ministry,
  • 00:07:12.110 --> 00:07:15.020
  • which is no small thing.
  • 00:07:15.030 --> 00:07:19.000
  • And just before Elijah is about to be taken up to heaven
  • 00:07:19.010 --> 00:07:22.000
  • in a season of transition--
  • 00:07:22.010 --> 00:07:23.100
  • and this message will specifically speak to you today
  • 00:07:23.110 --> 00:07:27.010
  • if you feel in a sense that your life is in transition.
  • 00:07:27.020 --> 00:07:31.010

  • Or visit tbn.org/unqualified.
  • 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:48.200
  • To be alive is to face transition.
  • 00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:54.280
  • And so, this passage gives us some principles
  • 00:07:54.290 --> 00:07:57.110
  • about transition.
  • 00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:59.000
  • It says that, "When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha,
  • 00:07:59.010 --> 00:08:01.100
  • 'Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?'"
  • 00:08:01.110 --> 00:08:06.050
  • Now, this is a big question, "What do you want?
  • 00:08:06.060 --> 00:08:09.040
  • What do you want?"
  • 00:08:09.050 --> 00:08:10.140
  • And Elijah, he's a mighty man of power,
  • 00:08:10.150 --> 00:08:12.290
  • so he can make things happen.
  • 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:14.240
  • "What is it that you want?"
  • 00:08:14.250 --> 00:08:17.060
  • Elisha has been following Elijah for 6 years
  • 00:08:17.070 --> 00:08:20.090
  • some scholars say at this point.
  • 00:08:20.100 --> 00:08:22.090
  • And now, before Elijah leaves
  • 00:08:22.100 --> 00:08:24.220
  • and puts the authority of the ministry
  • 00:08:24.230 --> 00:08:26.180
  • on the shoulders of Elisha, who's been in training,
  • 00:08:26.190 --> 00:08:28.290
  • he says, "What can I do before I am taken from you?"
  • 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:34.010
  • And Elisha says in verse 9, part B, "Let me get a dog."
  • 00:08:34.020 --> 00:08:39.000
  • Doesn't say exactly that.
  • 00:08:39.010 --> 00:08:40.170
  • He says, "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit."
  • 00:08:40.180 --> 00:08:45.220
  • In other words, "I want to do twice as much
  • 00:08:45.230 --> 00:08:48.000
  • "as you did for God.
  • 00:08:48.010 --> 00:08:51.000
  • "I want for my potential to exceed your power.
  • 00:08:51.010 --> 00:08:57.060
  • "I want to go further than you've gone.
  • 00:08:57.070 --> 00:08:59.140
  • I want to do greater things than you've done."
  • 00:08:59.150 --> 00:09:03.220
  • And I love Elijah's response because he sounds like a dad.
  • 00:09:03.230 --> 00:09:07.140
  • He sounds like me talking to Abby, or Graham,
  • 00:09:07.150 --> 00:09:09.190
  • or my son Elijah.
  • 00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.090
  • Verse 10, "You have asked a difficult thing."
  • 00:09:11.100 --> 00:09:15.140
  • You don't know what you're asking for.
  • 00:09:15.150 --> 00:09:18.250
  • You've seen me do the ministry, but there's a big difference
  • 00:09:18.260 --> 00:09:21.160
  • between watching somebody do big things for God,
  • 00:09:21.170 --> 00:09:24.250
  • and doing them yourself.
  • 00:09:24.260 --> 00:09:26.060
  • There's a big difference between petting a dog,
  • 00:09:26.070 --> 00:09:28.210
  • and walking a dog every morning.
  • 00:09:28.220 --> 00:09:32.120
  • "'You have asked a difficult thing,'
  • 00:09:32.130 --> 00:09:34.000
  • "Elijah said, 'yet if you see me when I am taken from you,
  • 00:09:34.010 --> 00:09:38.120
  • it will be yours. Otherwise, it will not.'"
  • 00:09:38.130 --> 00:09:41.110
  • You know what's interesting?
  • 00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:42.210
  • While they were walking along and talking together,
  • 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:45.200
  • the Bible says, "Suddenly a chariot of fire
  • 00:09:45.210 --> 00:09:47.130
  • and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them."
  • 00:09:47.140 --> 00:09:51.130
  • Can you hear the soundtrack in your mind,
  • 00:09:51.140 --> 00:09:52.230
  • "Chariots of Fire" soundtrack?
  • 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:54.030
  • I just need you to get that in your mind right now.
  • 00:09:54.040 --> 00:09:55.280
  • Maybe we can add it in as an aftereffect.
  • 00:09:55.290 --> 00:09:58.090
  • Just imagine it right now.
  • 00:09:58.100 --> 00:09:59.280
  • And here come the chariots of fire,
  • 00:09:59.290 --> 00:10:01.170
  • but these are not just the chariots of change,
  • 00:10:01.180 --> 00:10:04.060
  • these are the chariots of transition that are going to
  • 00:10:04.070 --> 00:10:06.060
  • take Elisha's spiritual father away.
  • 00:10:06.070 --> 00:10:08.080
  • And everything that has been familiar to him,
  • 00:10:08.090 --> 00:10:10.020
  • and everything that he's been following now
  • 00:10:10.030 --> 00:10:11.280
  • and left his familiar life behind to run after,
  • 00:10:11.290 --> 00:10:15.060
  • it's going away in a moment.
  • 00:10:15.070 --> 00:10:17.170
  • And the Bible says that the two were separated,
  • 00:10:17.180 --> 00:10:19.120
  • "And Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
  • 00:10:19.130 --> 00:10:21.180
  • "And Elisha saw this and cried out,
  • 00:10:21.190 --> 00:10:23.230
  • "'My father! My father!
  • 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:25.090
  • "The chariots and horsemen of Israel!'
  • 00:10:25.100 --> 00:10:27.120
  • "And Elisha saw him no more.
  • 00:10:27.130 --> 00:10:29.050
  • "And then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two.
  • 00:10:29.060 --> 00:10:32.000
  • And Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak that had fallen from him."
  • 00:10:32.010 --> 00:10:38.260
  • Can I have your jacket, Holly?
  • 00:10:38.270 --> 00:10:41.080
  • I was thinking about this cloak.
  • 00:10:41.090 --> 00:10:43.120
  • It's this cloak was the same kind of cloak that,
  • 00:10:43.130 --> 00:10:46.270
  • 6 years earlier,
  • 00:10:46.280 --> 00:10:48.190
  • when Elisha was plowing in a field and Elijah came by,
  • 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:53.230
  • he threw the cloak on him, threw it on him.
  • 00:10:53.240 --> 00:10:57.260
  • It was a symbolic gesture.
  • 00:10:57.270 --> 00:10:59.150
  • It represented the mantle of ministry that Elisha
  • 00:10:59.160 --> 00:11:03.150
  • was walking into.
  • 00:11:03.160 --> 00:11:06.220
  • And so, now when Elijah leaves and God is taking him,
  • 00:11:06.230 --> 00:11:11.020
  • leaves something behind, he leaves the cloak behind.
  • 00:11:11.030 --> 00:11:13.150
  • And the Bible says that when Elisha saw it,
  • 00:11:13.160 --> 00:11:16.280
  • he picked it up and went back,
  • 00:11:16.290 --> 00:11:20.020
  • and stood on the bank of the Jordan.
  • 00:11:20.030 --> 00:11:21.280
  • And took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck
  • 00:11:21.290 --> 00:11:25.040
  • the water with it, the Jordan, which represents transition.
  • 00:11:25.050 --> 00:11:30.040
  • You see, the theme of transition in this passage,
  • 00:11:30.050 --> 00:11:32.150
  • it's what you do in transition.
  • 00:11:32.160 --> 00:11:34.140
  • It's the connection in transition,
  • 00:11:34.150 --> 00:11:38.010
  • the test before the transfer.
  • 00:11:38.020 --> 00:11:41.090
  • And he took the cloak, and he struck the water with it.
  • 00:11:41.100 --> 00:11:44.230
  • And he asked a question, "Where now is the God of Elijah?"
  • 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:49.010
  • And when he struck the water, it says that it divided
  • 00:11:49.020 --> 00:11:55.080
  • to the right and to the left, and he crossed over.
  • 00:11:55.090 --> 00:11:59.150
  • When he--when he took what was left from the one that he had
  • 00:11:59.160 --> 00:12:03.280
  • followed faithfully, and had the faith to perform a simple task
  • 00:12:03.290 --> 00:12:11.200
  • to strike the water, God did something supernatural.
  • 00:12:11.210 --> 00:12:18.110
  • You know, friend, you are going to face some moments in your
  • 00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:21.180
  • life where what you have been taught will be tested.
  • 00:12:21.190 --> 00:12:27.230
  • Where the patience that you've learned about will provide
  • 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:32.030
  • an opportunity to be put into practice.
  • 00:12:32.040 --> 00:12:36.220
  • The tools of transformation are not usually workbooks
  • 00:12:36.230 --> 00:12:40.170
  • that God lets us fill in,
  • 00:12:40.180 --> 00:12:43.000
  • or highlighters with which we use yellow for adjectives
  • 00:12:43.010 --> 00:12:46.050
  • and green for verbs in our study Bibles.
  • 00:12:46.060 --> 00:12:49.090
  • The tools of transformation that God uses in our life
  • 00:12:49.100 --> 00:12:51.260
  • are pain, tears, trouble.
  • 00:12:51.270 --> 00:12:59.050
  • All of these are represented in 2 Kings.
  • 00:12:59.060 --> 00:13:02.090
  • All of these are the tools that God uses so that broken people
  • 00:13:02.100 --> 00:13:08.070
  • can do big things.
  • 00:13:08.080 --> 00:13:11.180
  • And I've been thinking a lot about this
  • 00:13:11.190 --> 00:13:13.220
  • because usually when I sit down with somebody
  • 00:13:13.230 --> 00:13:17.020
  • who's just getting started in ministry--
  • 00:13:17.030 --> 00:13:19.050
  • and in many ways I feel like I'm just getting started
  • 00:13:19.060 --> 00:13:20.260
  • in ministry, but I've been a pastor now
  • 00:13:20.270 --> 00:13:22.230
  • for a little over 10 years at the same church.
  • 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:24.260
  • I've been preaching longer than that,
  • 00:13:24.270 --> 00:13:26.070
  • so I guess I'm not a rookie anymore.
  • 00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:27.250
  • And now, when someone sits down with me
  • 00:13:27.260 --> 00:13:29.170
  • and they ask me how can they prepare for their calling,
  • 00:13:29.180 --> 00:13:34.010
  • "I feel like God wants to do something big through my life,"
  • 00:13:34.020 --> 00:13:36.190
  • and usually they'll start speaking futuristically
  • 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:38.190
  • about what that looks like.
  • 00:13:38.200 --> 00:13:41.080
  • They sound kind of like Graham.
  • 00:13:41.090 --> 00:13:43.270
  • You know, "I want a big church," or sometimes it's somebody
  • 00:13:43.280 --> 00:13:47.070
  • who's not married; or married, doesn't have kids.
  • 00:13:47.080 --> 00:13:50.010
  • You know, something that they want.
  • 00:13:50.020 --> 00:13:51.200
  • And those are good desires, it's great.
  • 00:13:51.210 --> 00:13:53.000
  • I mean, we all have dreams, and we should.
  • 00:13:53.010 --> 00:13:55.270
  • But I think sometimes, we miss the connection between,
  • 00:13:55.280 --> 00:14:01.250
  • well, what's next and what's now.
  • 00:14:01.260 --> 00:14:05.100
  • (announcer) Most of us look in the mirror and see our weaknesses,
  • 00:14:07.280 --> 00:14:10.020
  • our flaws.
  • 00:14:10.030 --> 00:14:12.070
  • But what if we could see ourselves the way God sees us?
  • 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:15.160
  • What if our thoughts reflected God's thoughts?
  • 00:14:15.170 --> 00:14:18.080
  • In his book "(Un)qualified," Steven Furtick helps you face

  • 00:14:21.010 --> 00:14:24.130
  • and learn to let God use you right where you are.

  • 00:14:36.130 --> 00:14:38.230
  • The only question you have to answer,
  • 00:14:40.160 --> 00:14:42.000
  • where is God at work now in my life?
  • 00:14:42.010 --> 00:14:46.170
  • Where is God at work now?
  • 00:14:46.180 --> 00:14:49.240
  • Boy, we sound so silly as a church sometimes, talking about,
  • 00:14:49.250 --> 00:14:53.020
  • "I wish we could go back to the Bible days."
  • 00:14:53.030 --> 00:14:55.070
  • Do you really?
  • 00:14:55.080 --> 00:14:58.070
  • You sure you want to go to jail
  • 00:14:58.080 --> 00:15:00.060
  • for preaching about Jesus, really?
  • 00:15:00.070 --> 00:15:02.090
  • 'Cause you're not going to have your ichthus on your car
  • 00:15:02.100 --> 00:15:03.290
  • if you go back to the Bible days, okay?
  • 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.290
  • You sure?
  • 00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:08.090
  • There's no Christian radio stations in the Bible days.
  • 00:15:08.100 --> 00:15:09.290
  • Are you sure?
  • 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:11.090
  • There's no TBN or Christian Broadcasting Network
  • 00:15:11.100 --> 00:15:13.040
  • in the Bible days.
  • 00:15:13.050 --> 00:15:15.140
  • Maybe these are the Bible days.
  • 00:15:15.150 --> 00:15:17.290
  • Where now is the God of Elijah?
  • 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:22.030
  • Jesus said that greater works will we do in his name
  • 00:15:22.040 --> 00:15:25.140
  • because he sent his Spirit.
  • 00:15:25.150 --> 00:15:27.010
  • He's given us a double portion.
  • 00:15:27.020 --> 00:15:29.030
  • He said we would do greater things than he did
  • 00:15:29.040 --> 00:15:31.170
  • while he was here because we are one in his name.
  • 00:15:31.180 --> 00:15:34.290
  • Where now is the God of Elijah?
  • 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.040
  • So, when I talk to somebody who's talking about
  • 00:15:37.050 --> 00:15:39.150
  • what God's gonna do through their life,
  • 00:15:39.160 --> 00:15:43.000
  • I try to get them to take a look at what he's doing.
  • 00:15:43.010 --> 00:15:46.280
  • Because whatever God is gonna do
  • 00:15:46.290 --> 00:15:49.290
  • is gonna start with what he's doing.
  • 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:53.090
  • And your faithfulness in this season
  • 00:15:53.100 --> 00:15:55.120
  • will determine your future.
  • 00:15:55.130 --> 00:15:58.230
  • Why would God open another door
  • 00:15:58.240 --> 00:16:01.260
  • when you're not willing to walk through the one
  • 00:16:01.270 --> 00:16:04.110
  • that he's put before you.
  • 00:16:04.120 --> 00:16:06.110
  • It's so simple that tomorrow's success
  • 00:16:06.120 --> 00:16:10.050
  • is dependent on today's sacrifice.
  • 00:16:10.060 --> 00:16:14.110
  • See, think about Elisha.
  • 00:16:14.120 --> 00:16:15.210
  • He really wasn't looking for a new job.
  • 00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:17.090
  • He wasn't looking for a next level or new assignment.
  • 00:16:17.100 --> 00:16:20.000
  • The Bible says that when Elijah came by Elisha 6 years
  • 00:16:20.010 --> 00:16:23.250
  • before the passage that I read to you,
  • 00:16:23.260 --> 00:16:26.010
  • that Elisha was plowing.
  • 00:16:26.020 --> 00:16:27.280
  • He was the 12th in line.
  • 00:16:27.290 --> 00:16:29.140
  • Plow--you can read this in your Bible
  • 00:16:29.150 --> 00:16:31.050
  • in 1 Kings chapter 19 for later study.
  • 00:16:31.060 --> 00:16:34.110
  • And all of a sudden,
  • 00:16:34.120 --> 00:16:35.220
  • he feels something that represents something,
  • 00:16:35.230 --> 00:16:38.040
  • and he follows after Elijah.
  • 00:16:38.050 --> 00:16:40.290
  • And he follows him not in order to work miracles,
  • 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.000
  • but in order to serve the one who would work miracles.
  • 00:16:45.010 --> 00:16:48.160
  • Now, I hear a lot of us talking about doing big things for God,
  • 00:16:48.170 --> 00:16:51.170
  • but would we be willing to spend 6 years in obscurity?
  • 00:16:51.180 --> 00:16:58.020
  • Would we be willing--because here's the interesting thing.
  • 00:16:58.030 --> 00:17:01.210
  • The Bible says that Elijah threw the cloak on Elisha,
  • 00:17:01.220 --> 00:17:05.180
  • but then he took it back.
  • 00:17:05.190 --> 00:17:07.210
  • And he took it back so that Elisha could learn
  • 00:17:07.220 --> 00:17:11.150
  • what he needed to learn,
  • 00:17:11.160 --> 00:17:12.250
  • and become who he needed to be to handle
  • 00:17:12.260 --> 00:17:15.010
  • what God had in store for him.
  • 00:17:15.020 --> 00:17:17.270
  • Sometimes, it's God's mercy that he doesn't give you
  • 00:17:17.280 --> 00:17:21.010
  • what you want the moment you ask for it.
  • 00:17:21.020 --> 00:17:24.020
  • Sometimes, it's God's mercy that he says, "No dog for you."
  • 00:17:24.030 --> 00:17:29.210
  • It's God's mercy that he puts you through 6 years of testing,
  • 00:17:29.220 --> 00:17:34.150
  • 6 years of testing, 6 laps around the Jericho wall,
  • 00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:39.080
  • 6 times to go look at the cloud, 6 years of testing,
  • 00:17:39.090 --> 00:17:42.290
  • 6 years of training, 6 years of transformation,
  • 00:17:43.000 --> 00:17:46.050
  • 6 years of infrastructure.
  • 00:17:46.060 --> 00:17:48.060
  • Some of you are in a period right now where it seems like
  • 00:17:48.070 --> 00:17:50.140
  • nothing is happening, but you're being tested for the transfer.
  • 00:17:50.150 --> 00:17:55.000
  • You're being tested.
  • 00:17:55.010 --> 00:17:56.130
  • You're in transition, and your faithfulness in this season
  • 00:17:56.140 --> 00:17:59.040
  • has everything to do with how you will experience
  • 00:17:59.050 --> 00:18:01.110
  • the next season.
  • 00:18:01.120 --> 00:18:02.290
  • Trust me, you don't want to go forward into what's next
  • 00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:05.190
  • without picking up what God wants you to learn now.
  • 00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:09.180
  • You're going to need this mantle.
  • 00:18:09.190 --> 00:18:11.070
  • You're going to need all these lessons.
  • 00:18:11.080 --> 00:18:13.020
  • You're going to need what you learn in the lonely times.
  • 00:18:13.030 --> 00:18:15.120
  • God's going to use all of it.
  • 00:18:15.130 --> 00:18:18.110
  • A test the other day, I wanted to make an investment,
  • 00:18:18.120 --> 00:18:21.180
  • a large investment.
  • 00:18:21.190 --> 00:18:23.100
  • I wanted to take some money and move it from my account
  • 00:18:23.110 --> 00:18:26.000
  • into an investment account.
  • 00:18:26.010 --> 00:18:28.290
  • And I was out of town, so I had to do it through somebody.
  • 00:18:29.000 --> 00:18:32.000
  • And I didn't have long to do it,
  • 00:18:32.010 --> 00:18:34.130
  • and so I told our church's CFO to make sure
  • 00:18:34.140 --> 00:18:39.130
  • that there was a wire sent to the account.
  • 00:18:39.140 --> 00:18:42.120
  • And I gave him the information.
  • 00:18:42.130 --> 00:18:44.030
  • Well, our CFO was out of town with me,
  • 00:18:44.040 --> 00:18:46.060
  • so he had to tell a controller to send the money.
  • 00:18:46.070 --> 00:18:48.160
  • Now, this is my money, and so I can put my money
  • 00:18:48.170 --> 00:18:50.290
  • where I want to send it.
  • 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:52.090
  • But see, I have controls set up so nobody can take my money.
  • 00:18:52.100 --> 00:18:55.020
  • So, I told the guy to tell the guy to send my money to the guy.
  • 00:18:55.030 --> 00:18:57.290
  • But the guy that I told to tell the guy had to tell the guy--
  • 00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:02.050
  • well, let me put it to you this way.
  • 00:19:02.060 --> 00:19:04.110
  • In order for the money to be released,
  • 00:19:04.120 --> 00:19:06.050
  • certain things had to happen to validate the party
  • 00:19:06.060 --> 00:19:08.150
  • that was receiving the funds.
  • 00:19:08.160 --> 00:19:11.010
  • So, when my CFO reached out to the guy and said,
  • 00:19:11.020 --> 00:19:15.000
  • "Wire the money," the controller said back to the CFO,
  • 00:19:15.010 --> 00:19:19.150
  • "I need you to verify that this is really you."
  • 00:19:19.160 --> 00:19:22.260
  • He called him on the phone
  • 00:19:22.270 --> 00:19:24.060
  • because he needed to hear his voice
  • 00:19:24.070 --> 00:19:25.220
  • to know that this is really you asking for the money.
  • 00:19:25.230 --> 00:19:28.240
  • In other words, I got to give you a test
  • 00:19:28.250 --> 00:19:32.180
  • before I can make the transfer.
  • 00:19:32.190 --> 00:19:35.190
  • I'm not just going to release some money that's not even mine
  • 00:19:35.200 --> 00:19:39.070
  • to somebody that I don't know who it is.
  • 00:19:39.080 --> 00:19:41.170
  • No wonder Elijah took the cloak back.
  • 00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:44.010
  • I worked to build this ministry,
  • 00:19:44.020 --> 00:19:45.270
  • I'm not going to just give it to you without you proving
  • 00:19:45.280 --> 00:19:48.120
  • that you're willing to carry it through hard places.
  • 00:19:48.130 --> 00:19:51.280
  • And some of you have been wondering why
  • 00:19:51.290 --> 00:19:53.230
  • you're in the wilderness right now.
  • 00:19:53.240 --> 00:19:55.170
  • It's the test before the transfer.
  • 00:19:55.180 --> 00:19:58.180
  • And you can't receive the transfer
  • 00:19:58.190 --> 00:20:00.270
  • if you don't pass the test.
  • 00:20:00.280 --> 00:20:03.100
  • (announcer) Paul was a murderer.
  • 00:20:05.250 --> 00:20:07.110
  • Rahab was a prostitute.
  • 00:20:07.120 --> 00:20:09.000
  • Peter denied Jesus.
  • 00:20:09.010 --> 00:20:10.230
  • And Jonah was fish food.
  • 00:20:10.240 --> 00:20:12.220
  • By any standard, these guys were unqualified.
  • 00:20:12.230 --> 00:20:15.190
  • And yet, God entrusted them with some of the most
  • 00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:18.130
  • important tasks in human history.
  • 00:20:18.140 --> 00:20:20.130
  • Just like these Bible greats, we struggle in the space
  • 00:20:20.140 --> 00:20:22.280
  • between our weaknesses and our dreams,
  • 00:20:22.290 --> 00:20:25.130
  • between who we think we are and who God says we're meant to be.
  • 00:20:25.140 --> 00:20:28.290
  • Feeling unqualified?
  • 00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:30.090
  • Welcome to the club.
  • 00:20:30.100 --> 00:20:31.190
  • In his encouraging book "(Un)qualified,"
  • 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:33.280
  • Steven Furtick reveals the inspiring truth
  • 00:20:33.290 --> 00:20:36.050
  • that being unqualified is God's favorite qualification.
  • 00:20:36.060 --> 00:20:40.170
  • This book is about understanding your identity
  • 00:20:40.180 --> 00:20:42.150
  • in light of who God is.
  • 00:20:42.160 --> 00:20:44.220
  • It's about coming to terms with the good, the bad,
  • 00:20:44.230 --> 00:20:47.150
  • and the unmentionable in your life,
  • 00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:49.220
  • and learning to let God use you right where you are.
  • 00:20:49.230 --> 00:20:52.250
  • I believe that as you read it,
  • 00:20:52.260 --> 00:20:54.190
  • you'll discover that God has a way of using our weaknesses.
  • 00:20:54.200 --> 00:20:58.260
  • In fact, you'll be encouraged as you find out
  • 00:20:58.270 --> 00:21:01.080
  • that God really loves and uses unqualified people.
  • 00:21:01.090 --> 00:21:05.120
  • (announcer) In appreciation of your gift of any amount in support of TBN,

  • we'll rush you the book and the box set of the entire
  • 00:21:20.280 --> 00:21:23.160
  • 13-episode series on DVD.
  • 00:21:23.170 --> 00:21:25.240
  • Take a moment right now to call...
  • 00:21:25.250 --> 00:21:30.000
  • Or share your gift securely online
  • 00:21:30.010 --> 00:21:31.290
  • when you visit tbn.org/unqualified.
  • 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:35.170
  • The Bible says that the company of prophets
  • 00:21:39.040 --> 00:21:40.220
  • stood at a distance watching.
  • 00:21:40.230 --> 00:21:42.040
  • And that's how a lot of Christians live,
  • 00:21:42.050 --> 00:21:43.230
  • standing at a distance, watching, waiting.
  • 00:21:43.240 --> 00:21:49.150
  • But it's the people who are close enough to catch it.
  • 00:21:49.160 --> 00:21:55.220
  • That's all God needs you to be, by the way.
  • 00:21:55.230 --> 00:21:58.260
  • One preacher said he doesn't call the qualified,
  • 00:21:58.270 --> 00:22:03.090
  • he qualifies the called.
  • 00:22:03.100 --> 00:22:06.110
  • That might be a cliche, but it's a good one
  • 00:22:06.120 --> 00:22:09.100
  • 'cause that's exactly what he does.
  • 00:22:09.110 --> 00:22:13.240
  • The only thing I can find that the disciples did right
  • 00:22:13.250 --> 00:22:16.290
  • to be on Jesus' team was to follow his instruction.
  • 00:22:17.000 --> 00:22:21.070
  • And the only instruction I can find that he gave was,
  • 00:22:21.080 --> 00:22:23.280
  • "Follow me."
  • 00:22:23.290 --> 00:22:26.040
  • Is it really that simple?
  • 00:22:26.050 --> 00:22:28.280
  • I think it is.
  • 00:22:28.290 --> 00:22:32.090
  • I think all you have to do is stay close enough to catch it.
  • 00:22:32.100 --> 00:22:38.210
  • And the wonderful thing about God
  • 00:22:38.220 --> 00:22:40.100
  • is he doesn't need for you to do something extraordinary
  • 00:22:40.110 --> 00:22:45.010
  • in order to bless you.
  • 00:22:45.020 --> 00:22:46.290
  • He just needs you to be in your position
  • 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:49.190
  • so that when the opportunity comes, he can trust you
  • 00:22:49.200 --> 00:22:53.230
  • because you've proven that you're obedient
  • 00:22:53.240 --> 00:22:57.030
  • in the small things.
  • 00:22:57.040 --> 00:22:58.240
  • And if you're obedient in the little things,
  • 00:22:58.250 --> 00:23:01.200
  • he can give you an opportunity in the big things.
  • 00:23:01.210 --> 00:23:06.110
  • "Follow me. Come on, follow me. Follow me, and learn from me."
  • 00:23:06.120 --> 00:23:11.270
  • That's what it means to be a disciple, a perpetual learner.
  • 00:23:11.280 --> 00:23:15.270
  • Just stay close.
  • 00:23:15.280 --> 00:23:18.020
  • Chase it.
  • 00:23:18.030 --> 00:23:19.220
  • Chasing after God.
  • 00:23:19.230 --> 00:23:22.140
  • The only reason that callings are aborted
  • 00:23:22.150 --> 00:23:24.250
  • is because people give up the chase, get winded,
  • 00:23:24.260 --> 00:23:29.100
  • get tired of wondering, "Is this ever going to work?"
  • 00:23:29.110 --> 00:23:33.210
  • I believe there's somebody that God is speaking to today,
  • 00:23:33.220 --> 00:23:36.240
  • and you're at a transition point in your life.
  • 00:23:36.250 --> 00:23:40.040
  • What you do now is going to determine what happens next.
  • 00:23:40.050 --> 00:23:44.220
  • You know, you can only affect the future from the present.
  • 00:23:45.030 --> 00:23:48.060
  • Can't affect it from the past, wishing you would have.
  • 00:23:48.070 --> 00:23:51.050
  • You might have lost some time,
  • 00:23:51.060 --> 00:23:52.180
  • you might have missed some opportunities.
  • 00:23:52.190 --> 00:23:54.010
  • Maybe there were some times where you let the cloak
  • 00:23:54.020 --> 00:23:55.180
  • fall to the ground.
  • 00:23:55.190 --> 00:23:57.070
  • Maybe there's some opportunities that you missed with your kid.
  • 00:23:57.080 --> 00:23:59.100
  • Maybe there were some opportunities
  • 00:23:59.110 --> 00:24:00.250
  • that you've already let slip by.
  • 00:24:00.260 --> 00:24:02.070
  • You can't do anything about that.
  • 00:24:02.080 --> 00:24:03.230
  • What I love about Elisha is he picked up the cloak.
  • 00:24:03.240 --> 00:24:07.010
  • And I believe God is saying to somebody today,
  • 00:24:07.020 --> 00:24:09.280
  • "Let's pick up where you left off."
  • 00:24:09.290 --> 00:24:13.280
  • That's what grace is.
  • 00:24:13.290 --> 00:24:15.220
  • Grace gives you the ability to begin where you are,
  • 00:24:15.230 --> 00:24:19.040
  • and to continue forward with full confidence
  • 00:24:19.050 --> 00:24:22.140
  • that God is working in my life.
  • 00:24:22.150 --> 00:24:28.140
  • You're in a test right now, that's good.
  • 00:24:28.150 --> 00:24:31.100
  • That means God is getting you ready for a transfer.
  • 00:24:31.110 --> 00:24:34.230
  • That means he's getting ready to turn your sorrow into joy,
  • 00:24:34.240 --> 00:24:38.220
  • your mourning into dancing, your captivity into deliverance,
  • 00:24:38.230 --> 00:24:45.090
  • your season of scarcity into a season of abundance.
  • 00:24:45.100 --> 00:24:50.030
  • But you got to be found faithful in the meantime.
  • 00:24:50.040 --> 00:24:54.150
  • And God is saying pick up the cloak, and strike the water,
  • 00:24:54.160 --> 00:24:59.170
  • and move forward in faith.
  • 00:24:59.180 --> 00:25:03.040
  • I want to pray for you today in Jesus' name
