  • 00:00:06.070 --> 00:00:16.070
  • Ed Young: Once every generation or so, you have just
  • 00:00:21.290 --> 00:00:26.100
  • an outstanding young man come along.
  • 00:00:26.110 --> 00:00:31.140
  • He was graduated from high school top of his class, played
  • 00:00:31.150 --> 00:00:38.030
  • four sports.
  • 00:00:38.040 --> 00:00:40.110
  • Was an excellent athlete.
  • 00:00:40.120 --> 00:00:42.280
  • Received a full academic scholarship to Rice University,
  • 00:00:42.290 --> 00:00:49.160
  • and there he played two college sports and was Academic
  • 00:00:49.170 --> 00:00:52.270
  • All-American in both of those sports.
  • 00:00:52.280 --> 00:00:56.230
  • But his graduation from Rice toward the top of his graduating
  • 00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:01.000
  • class, a lot of the large corporations all around the
  • 00:01:01.010 --> 00:01:05.260
  • world came and he was the kind of guy they wanted to be on
  • 00:01:05.270 --> 00:01:09.130
  • their team.
  • 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:11.240
  • They made him a lucrative offer for someone just coming out of
  • 00:01:11.250 --> 00:01:15.180
  • school and he was sent to Atlanta, and there as he worked
  • 00:01:15.190 --> 00:01:21.210
  • for this corporation, he received his MBA from Emory and
  • 00:01:21.220 --> 00:01:28.160
  • he began to be promoted rapidly through the ranks until at
  • 00:01:28.170 --> 00:01:32.190
  • 29 years of age he was a vice president.
  • 00:01:32.200 --> 00:01:35.170
  • He was ascending to the top where soon he would be a partner
  • 00:01:35.180 --> 00:01:39.140
  • in the corporation, and he was a phenomenal guy.
  • 00:01:39.150 --> 00:01:46.240
  • He got up every morning at 5 a.m.
  • 00:01:46.250 --> 00:01:48.260
  • and worked out for an hour and a half.
  • 00:01:48.270 --> 00:01:51.050
  • He was the first person to get to the office almost every day.
  • 00:01:51.060 --> 00:01:53.240
  • He worked tirelessly.
  • 00:01:53.250 --> 00:01:57.040
  • He had a dynamic personality.
  • 00:01:57.050 --> 00:01:59.040
  • Everybody was drawn to him.
  • 00:01:59.050 --> 00:02:01.100
  • On Saturdays he'd go cycling, and he would run a couple of
  • 00:02:01.110 --> 00:02:06.080
  • marathons every year.
  • 00:02:06.090 --> 00:02:08.190
  • His golfing handicap was a 3, and one of the partners would
  • 00:02:08.200 --> 00:02:14.190
  • take him to play the Augusta National, the Masters about
  • 00:02:14.200 --> 00:02:17.090
  • every other month.
  • 00:02:17.100 --> 00:02:19.280
  • On top of that, he went to a Bible study twice a week in the
  • 00:02:19.290 --> 00:02:23.110
  • office that they had, and every Sunday he would go to church and
  • 00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:27.120
  • sit down in a pew with a Bible in his hand.
  • 00:02:27.130 --> 00:02:30.260
  • He just never missed worshipping on the Lord's Day.
  • 00:02:30.270 --> 00:02:34.150
  • This is the kind of guy that every mother here would say,
  • 00:02:34.160 --> 00:02:40.180
  • "Would he like to meet my daughter?"
  • 00:02:40.190 --> 00:02:45.230
  • And in modern vernacular we would say, "This is a young guy
  • 00:02:45.240 --> 00:02:50.190
  • who's kicking it.
  • 00:02:50.200 --> 00:02:53.220
  • Man, he's got every base covered."
  • 00:02:53.230 --> 00:02:57.120
  • He was the delight of everybody.
  • 00:02:57.130 --> 00:03:02.200
  • This is exactly the kind of guy that Jesus encountered as he was
  • 00:03:02.210 --> 00:03:07.040
  • going from Jericho to Jerusalem and this young guy ran up to
  • 00:03:07.050 --> 00:03:13.090
  • him, and listen to what took place in the conversation.
  • 00:03:13.100 --> 00:03:16.210
  • "As he was setting out on a journey, a man," the guy we're
  • 00:03:16.220 --> 00:03:20.290
  • talking about, "ran up to Jesus and knelt before him and asked
  • 00:03:21.000 --> 00:03:25.240
  • him, 'Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
  • 00:03:25.250 --> 00:03:31.000
  • And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good?
  • 00:03:31.010 --> 00:03:35.030
  • No one is good except God alone.'
  • 00:03:35.040 --> 00:03:39.070
  • Then Jesus said, 'You know
  • 00:03:39.080 --> 00:03:41.020
  • the commandments: do not murder, do not commit adultery,
  • 00:03:41.030 --> 00:03:44.250
  • do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor
  • 00:03:44.260 --> 00:03:48.200
  • your father and mother.'
  • 00:03:48.210 --> 00:03:50.050
  • And the young guy said to Jesus,
  • 00:03:50.060 --> 00:03:52.200
  • 'Teacher, I have kept all of these things from my youth up.'"
  • 00:03:52.210 --> 00:04:00.200
  • So, first of all, we have the big question, we have the
  • 00:04:00.210 --> 00:04:05.120
  • shocking answer that we're going to look at that Jesus gave him,
  • 00:04:05.130 --> 00:04:10.200
  • and then we have the big wow principle.
  • 00:04:10.210 --> 00:04:14.130
  • Here he runs up, this young guy.
  • 00:04:14.140 --> 00:04:18.150
  • He's rich, had a lot of means.
  • 00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:23.000
  • He was young.
  • 00:04:23.010 --> 00:04:27.170
  • Nothing wrong with that.
  • 00:04:27.180 --> 00:04:31.010
  • By the way, he must have been handsome.
  • 00:04:31.020 --> 00:04:33.240
  • If you're rich and young, you just almost can't escape
  • 00:04:33.250 --> 00:04:36.070
  • being handsome.
  • 00:04:36.080 --> 00:04:38.190
  • Now, some people miss that, but it's hard to do if you're rich
  • 00:04:38.200 --> 00:04:42.070
  • and you're young.
  • 00:04:42.080 --> 00:04:44.180
  • So he had the right means, he came to Jesus at the right time.
  • 00:04:44.190 --> 00:04:48.090
  • He had a position.
  • 00:04:48.100 --> 00:04:50.240
  • Perhaps he was a ruler of the synagogue or he had some kind of
  • 00:04:50.250 --> 00:04:53.030
  • title in that area.
  • 00:04:53.040 --> 00:04:55.110
  • And if you were the ruler of the synagogue, this means that you
  • 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:57.070
  • were the number one religious person in the whole area.
  • 00:04:57.080 --> 00:05:00.200
  • It means that you had the highest political office.
  • 00:05:00.210 --> 00:05:02.260
  • It means that you were the most affluent and you were involved
  • 00:05:02.270 --> 00:05:05.120
  • in all the commercial enterprises of that day.
  • 00:05:05.130 --> 00:05:09.210
  • Rich, had the right means; young, right time; had a
  • 00:05:09.220 --> 00:05:15.080
  • position, and he went in the right attitude.
  • 00:05:15.090 --> 00:05:18.210
  • Notice he ran to Jesus and he knelt before Jesus.
  • 00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:22.100
  • Had the right attitude.
  • 00:05:22.110 --> 00:05:24.190
  • Humbly came before the master.
  • 00:05:24.200 --> 00:05:27.100
  • He asked the right question, "What must I do to inherit
  • 00:05:27.110 --> 00:05:30.200
  • eternal life?"
  • 00:05:30.210 --> 00:05:32.150
  • And by the way, this question was asked all the time in
  • 00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:36.080
  • rabbinical teaching in that day.
  • 00:05:36.090 --> 00:05:38.190
  • It was a common question.
  • 00:05:38.200 --> 00:05:40.110
  • Rabbi would stand up and he would sort of begin his lecture
  • 00:05:40.120 --> 00:05:42.170
  • and say, you know, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:44.250
  • And all the rabbis gave the same universal answer to that
  • 00:05:44.260 --> 00:05:48.050
  • question in every synagogue.
  • 00:05:48.060 --> 00:05:50.020
  • They would always say, "Keep the commandments.
  • 00:05:50.030 --> 00:05:53.060
  • Avoid sin. Keep the commandments.
  • 00:05:53.070 --> 00:05:56.090
  • Avoid sin."
  • 00:05:56.100 --> 00:05:57.250
  • That was the stock answer.
  • 00:05:57.260 --> 00:05:59.050
  • So his question, he asked the right question.
  • 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:01.070
  • And also, we saw he had the right lifestyle.
  • 00:06:01.080 --> 00:06:04.030
  • He was a moral man.
  • 00:06:04.040 --> 00:06:06.090
  • Now, what else could you find?
  • 00:06:06.100 --> 00:06:08.080
  • What else would you look for in someone?
  • 00:06:08.090 --> 00:06:11.050
  • Affluent, had a position.
  • 00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:16.080
  • He was young, asked the right question, came to Jesus
  • 00:06:16.090 --> 00:06:21.060
  • with the right attitude.
  • 00:06:21.070 --> 00:06:23.100
  • He went to the right person.
  • 00:06:23.110 --> 00:06:24.280
  • He went to Jesus.
  • 00:06:24.290 --> 00:06:26.160
  • And then on top of that, he was a moral, ethical young man.
  • 00:06:26.170 --> 00:06:31.120
  • Boy, some kind of guy, right?
  • 00:06:31.130 --> 00:06:36.120
  • I'm sure all the other disciples and apostles sort of said, "You
  • 00:06:36.130 --> 00:06:39.130
  • know, we've been looking for somebody just like this.
  • 00:06:39.140 --> 00:06:42.010
  • He's going to change our whole endeavor here on this earth.
  • 00:06:42.020 --> 00:06:45.140
  • This is the man."
  • 00:06:45.150 --> 00:06:48.220
  • And then--and he said to him, "Jesus, I have kept all of these
  • 00:06:48.230 --> 00:06:55.190
  • things," 20th verse, "since my bar mitzvah.
  • 00:06:55.200 --> 00:06:58.280
  • I've lived a perfect life."
  • 00:06:58.290 --> 00:07:01.010
  • You say, "Well, he wasn't really telling the truth."
  • 00:07:01.020 --> 00:07:02.260
  • You know, Paul made the same claim.
  • 00:07:02.270 --> 00:07:04.290
  • Philippians 2 he said, "You know, I've kept the law.
  • 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:07.100
  • I've been perfect in the law."
  • 00:07:07.110 --> 00:07:09.070
  • And notice these commandments.
  • 00:07:09.080 --> 00:07:10.220
  • These are the commandments.
  • 00:07:10.230 --> 00:07:12.100
  • There are six, commandment five through commandment nine in
  • 00:07:12.110 --> 00:07:15.180
  • Exodus 20.
  • 00:07:15.190 --> 00:07:17.170
  • That's the ones he rehearsed.
  • 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:19.110
  • These are the commandments that deal with interpersonal
  • 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:22.010
  • relationships.
  • 00:07:22.020 --> 00:07:23.250
  • These are the commandments that deal with your relationship, my
  • 00:07:23.260 --> 00:07:26.110
  • relationship to other people.
  • 00:07:26.120 --> 00:07:27.240
  • And this young man said, "As far as my relationship with other
  • 00:07:27.250 --> 00:07:30.220
  • people: lying, adultery, murder, stealing, honoring parents," he
  • 00:07:30.230 --> 00:07:34.040
  • said, "I get an A+.
  • 00:07:34.050 --> 00:07:36.010
  • I've kept all of them."
  • 00:07:36.020 --> 00:07:40.140
  • And it said in a little verse here, it says Jesus loved him.
  • 00:07:40.150 --> 00:07:44.290
  • Jesus loved everybody, but Jesus saw something extra in this
  • 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:48.290
  • young man.
  • 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:50.130
  • Anybody would have seen all that he had going for him.
  • 00:07:50.140 --> 00:07:55.130
  • Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful moment.
  • 00:07:55.140 --> 00:07:58.030
  • And by the way, look at what Jesus said, the shocking answer
  • 00:07:58.040 --> 00:08:03.100
  • he gave to this.
  • 00:08:03.110 --> 00:08:04.280
  • "Looking at him, Jesus had love for him," verse 21, "and said to
  • 00:08:04.290 --> 00:08:07.270
  • him, 'One thing you lack.'"
  • 00:08:07.280 --> 00:08:13.000
  • I imagine the young guy said,
  • 00:08:13.070 --> 00:08:14.200
  • "Whatever it is, I'm ready to do it."
  • 00:08:14.210 --> 00:08:18.060
  • He said, "What must I do?"
  • 00:08:18.070 --> 00:08:20.140
  • By the way, this young man was in the inheritance business.
  • 00:08:20.150 --> 00:08:24.070
  • You don't get that rich that young and have a title unless
  • 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:29.030
  • you inherited it from your daddy.
  • 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:32.150
  • So he asked--he said, "I have gotten my riches, I've got my
  • 00:08:32.160 --> 00:08:35.160
  • title because I've inherited it."
  • 00:08:35.170 --> 00:08:37.220
  • He said, "Now, I've got everything in this world
  • 00:08:37.230 --> 00:08:40.080
  • covered.
  • 00:08:40.090 --> 00:08:41.180
  • I'm secure. I'm safe.
  • 00:08:41.190 --> 00:08:43.140
  • I have it all. Been there, done that.
  • 00:08:43.150 --> 00:08:46.150
  • I've got everything I need in this world," he said, "but I
  • 00:08:46.160 --> 00:08:50.000
  • need one other thing.
  • 00:08:50.010 --> 00:08:51.120
  • How can I get to heaven?
  • 00:08:51.130 --> 00:08:52.250
  • I want to have security in the next life."
  • 00:08:52.260 --> 00:08:58.000
  • Jesus said, "One thing you lack."
  • 00:08:58.010 --> 00:09:02.030
  • I imagine in his mind he said, "Name it.
  • 00:09:02.040 --> 00:09:04.110
  • I can handle it."
  • 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:08.020
  • Jesus said, "Go and sell everything you have, give it to
  • 00:09:08.030 --> 00:09:14.270
  • the poor, and come and follow me."
  • 00:09:14.280 --> 00:09:24.210
  • That took him back a little bit,
  • 00:09:24.220 --> 00:09:30.130
  • and the Bible says he got up, went away sorrowing.
  • 00:09:31.090 --> 00:09:38.100
  • Literally, he went away broken, confused, beaten up because the
  • 00:09:38.110 --> 00:09:46.060
  • Bible says he had a lot of property.
  • 00:09:46.070 --> 00:09:53.270
  • Did you know this is the only example of anyone who ever came
  • 00:09:53.280 --> 00:09:58.090
  • in the life of Jesus and knelt at his feet that when they got
  • 00:09:58.100 --> 00:10:02.220
  • up, they went away poorer than when they arrived?
  • 00:10:02.230 --> 00:10:07.090
  • They went away in worse condition than when they first
  • 00:10:07.100 --> 00:10:10.010
  • came and knelt at the feet of Jesus.
  • 00:10:10.020 --> 00:10:11.170
  • Did you know this is the only example of that?
  • 00:10:11.180 --> 00:10:14.190
  • Everybody else got up healed.
  • 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:16.030
  • Everybody got--else got up walking in faith.
  • 00:10:16.040 --> 00:10:18.230
  • Everybody else got up blessed.
  • 00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:20.150
  • Everybody else got up with a new life.
  • 00:10:20.160 --> 00:10:22.190
  • Everybody else was touched profoundly, that changed
  • 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:25.200
  • their lives.
  • 00:10:25.210 --> 00:10:27.010
  • This guy got up in worse condition than when he ran and
  • 00:10:27.020 --> 00:10:30.190
  • knelt at the feet of Jesus.
  • 00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:32.020
  • The only illustration of that in all the Bible.
  • 00:10:32.030 --> 00:10:37.140
  • What's going on here?
  • 00:10:37.150 --> 00:10:39.280
  • What's happening here?
  • 00:10:39.290 --> 00:10:44.200
  • You see, Jesus said, "Go sell.
  • 00:10:44.210 --> 00:10:50.070
  • Come follow."
  • 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:54.030
  • And Jesus was saying, "I want to be in the middle of your life
  • 00:10:54.040 --> 00:10:57.080
  • and call the shots in your life.
  • 00:10:57.090 --> 00:10:59.040
  • I want to be Lord and Savior of your life," and the problem with
  • 00:10:59.050 --> 00:11:04.020
  • this young man was that he was already owned by another god.
  • 00:11:04.030 --> 00:11:11.270
  • He was already owned by another god.
  • 00:11:11.280 --> 00:11:13.280
  • The world says, "You are what you own."
  • 00:11:13.290 --> 00:11:18.030
  • God says, "You are what owns you."
  • 00:11:18.040 --> 00:11:25.010
  • And so the office of God was already filled in the life of
  • 00:11:25.020 --> 00:11:28.230
  • this young man, and therefore he turned and he decided he would
  • 00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:35.080
  • trust in his trust funds rather than trusting Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:35.090 --> 00:11:42.290
  • "Go sell.
  • 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:44.090
  • Come follow."
  • 00:11:44.100 --> 00:11:46.130
  • He got up and said, "I'm out of here."
  • 00:11:46.140 --> 00:11:49.130
  • But he got up broken.
  • 00:11:49.140 --> 00:11:52.040
  • Jesus was making an offer to this young man to come with him
  • 00:11:52.050 --> 00:11:56.120
  • and be a part of the 12, to be in the inner circle.
  • 00:11:56.130 --> 00:11:59.130
  • That's what the comma--that's what it was all about.
  • 00:11:59.140 --> 00:12:01.200
  • What an offer.
  • 00:12:01.210 --> 00:12:03.180
  • "Come and, man, come close. Be a part."
  • 00:12:03.190 --> 00:12:06.180
  • Jesus loved him. He saw what he could mean.
  • 00:12:06.190 --> 00:12:09.010
  • He saw the potential in his life.
  • 00:12:09.020 --> 00:12:11.140
  • He said, "You only lack one thing."
  • 00:12:11.150 --> 00:12:13.160
  • And notice something.
  • 00:12:13.170 --> 00:12:15.160
  • This was a highly moral individual.
  • 00:12:15.170 --> 00:12:19.110
  • I mean, his morality was off the charts.
  • 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:21.090
  • He was just--he was there.
  • 00:12:21.100 --> 00:12:24.180
  • So we have the idea that when we become a Christian, we confess
  • 00:12:24.190 --> 00:12:27.270
  • sin, right?
  • 00:12:27.280 --> 00:12:29.150
  • Repent, turn away from sin, right?
  • 00:12:29.160 --> 00:12:32.090
  • We invite Jesus in our life.
  • 00:12:32.100 --> 00:12:34.100
  • We got the sin question worked out, but there's another thing
  • 00:12:34.110 --> 00:12:38.060
  • that comes along.
  • 00:12:38.070 --> 00:12:39.210
  • That's what we do with the evil. That's proper.
  • 00:12:39.220 --> 00:12:42.110
  • What do you do with the good that God gives to you and me?
  • 00:12:42.120 --> 00:12:45.180
  • That's the question.
  • 00:12:45.190 --> 00:12:48.250
  • He handled the sin problem, but he wasn't handling the biggest
  • 00:12:48.260 --> 00:12:52.120
  • sin of all because he was addicted, he was aligned.
  • 00:12:52.130 --> 00:12:56.270
  • His life revolved around his wealth.
  • 00:12:56.280 --> 00:12:59.040
  • It was the wealth that gave him an entree to people.
  • 00:12:59.050 --> 00:13:02.110
  • It was the wealth that made him popular.
  • 00:13:02.120 --> 00:13:04.190
  • It was the wealth that controlled his life.
  • 00:13:04.200 --> 00:13:08.290
  • And Jesus was saying, "You can't hold on to that god and let me
  • 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:13.110
  • be your God, and you can't follow me and keep that as the
  • 00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:17.050
  • center of your life."
  • 00:13:17.060 --> 00:13:20.260
  • Scary, isn't it?
  • 00:13:20.270 --> 00:13:25.120
  • And then look at the response here we have.
  • 00:13:25.130 --> 00:13:30.190
  • Verse 22, "But at these words he was saddened, and he went away
  • 00:13:30.200 --> 00:13:33.260
  • grieving as he was one who owned much property.
  • 00:13:33.270 --> 00:13:37.010
  • And Jesus looking around said to his disciples--"
  • 00:13:37.020 --> 00:13:40.290
  • Now notice, first of all,
  • 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:43.180
  • when the young man came up, Jesus pointed to heaven
  • 00:13:43.190 --> 00:13:45.270
  • and said, "You call me good?"
  • 00:13:45.280 --> 00:13:47.280
  • He said, "No one's good but God."
  • 00:13:47.290 --> 00:13:49.150
  • He was checking out to see if this young man was
  • 00:13:49.160 --> 00:13:51.170
  • calling him God.
  • 00:13:51.180 --> 00:13:53.060
  • He was, but he said, you know, "Don't call anybody good.
  • 00:13:53.070 --> 00:13:54.250
  • Only God can be called good."
  • 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:56.120
  • The rabbis taught that.
  • 00:13:56.130 --> 00:13:57.270
  • You didn't say, "There's a good man."
  • 00:13:57.280 --> 00:13:59.080
  • Oh, no. Only God is good.
  • 00:13:59.090 --> 00:14:01.070
  • He pointed to heaven.
  • 00:14:01.080 --> 00:14:02.180
  • Then he pointed to the commandments.
  • 00:14:02.190 --> 00:14:03.290
  • "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:05.180
  • He said, "Look at the commandments.
  • 00:14:05.190 --> 00:14:07.040
  • Keep these."
  • 00:14:07.050 --> 00:14:08.220
  • Said, "Man, I've kept all of those."
  • 00:14:08.230 --> 00:14:10.130
  • Then he pointed the young man, Jesus did.
  • 00:14:10.140 --> 00:14:13.160
  • He said, "Now, you go sell all that and you follow me.
  • 00:14:13.170 --> 00:14:17.100
  • You lack one thing."
  • 00:14:17.110 --> 00:14:19.230
  • By the way, what commandment was this young man breaking?
  • 00:14:19.240 --> 00:14:22.250
  • The first commandment: "Thou shall have no other gods
  • 00:14:22.260 --> 00:14:26.260
  • before me."
  • 00:14:26.270 --> 00:14:28.060
  • We make anything god and put anything in first place in your
  • 00:14:28.070 --> 00:14:34.060
  • life or in my life, we have usurped God Almighty who wants
  • 00:14:34.070 --> 00:14:39.130
  • to have the exclusive center of your life and the exclusive
  • 00:14:39.140 --> 00:14:43.070
  • center of my life.
  • 00:14:43.080 --> 00:14:44.210
  • See what happened?
  • 00:14:44.220 --> 00:14:46.290
  • And then Jesus pointed at the disciples after the young man
  • 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:50.280
  • walked off.
  • 00:14:50.290 --> 00:14:53.130
  • "And Jesus looking around said to the disciples, 'How hard it
  • 00:14:53.140 --> 00:14:57.260
  • will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom
  • 00:14:57.270 --> 00:15:02.080
  • of God.'
  • 00:15:02.090 --> 00:15:03.280
  • And the disciples were amazed at his word--and said to
  • 00:15:03.290 --> 00:15:10.130
  • them, 'Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God.'"
  • 00:15:10.140 --> 00:15:14.050
  • Why were the disciples amazed?
  • 00:15:14.060 --> 00:15:17.270
  • Because the Jews believed that if you kept the law and you were
  • 00:15:17.280 --> 00:15:22.260
  • moral, God would bless you with riches.
  • 00:15:22.270 --> 00:15:25.120
  • They believed that.
  • 00:15:25.130 --> 00:15:26.290
  • If you doubt that, read Deuteronomy 26
  • 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:29.220
  • through chapter 28.
  • 00:15:29.230 --> 00:15:31.050
  • That's what the Jewish religion taught.
  • 00:15:31.060 --> 00:15:32.230
  • "Man, if you're good, man, you're going to have a lot of
  • 00:15:32.240 --> 00:15:34.090
  • money, you're going to have a lot of property, a lot of
  • 00:15:34.100 --> 00:15:36.000
  • prestige."
  • 00:15:36.010 --> 00:15:37.200
  • Now, this was taught in the early days of Judaism.
  • 00:15:37.210 --> 00:15:40.120
  • It's like we teach children on the basis of rewards and basis
  • 00:15:40.130 --> 00:15:44.020
  • of punishment.
  • 00:15:44.030 --> 00:15:45.150
  • But see, they had moved through all of this.
  • 00:15:45.160 --> 00:15:47.200
  • Now, Jesus was taking it to a higher realm and the disciples
  • 00:15:47.210 --> 00:15:53.250
  • weren't getting it.
  • 00:15:53.260 --> 00:15:56.050
  • It wasn't breaking through. They wasn't understanding.
  • 00:15:56.060 --> 00:15:58.270
  • He said they were amazed, and then Jesus gave them that
  • 00:15:58.280 --> 00:16:02.140
  • wow statement.
  • 00:16:02.150 --> 00:16:03.240
  • He said, "Let me tell you how tough it is.
  • 00:16:03.250 --> 00:16:06.000
  • It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than
  • 00:16:06.010 --> 00:16:10.090
  • is for a rich guy to get to heaven."
  • 00:16:10.100 --> 00:16:14.060
  • And when he said that, they answered...
  • 00:16:14.070 --> 00:16:19.030
  • They answered...
  • 00:16:19.040 --> 00:16:21.160
  • And it says in the Bible, they were more amazed at that.
  • 00:16:21.170 --> 00:16:27.100
  • Now, what was Jesus talking about?
  • 00:16:27.110 --> 00:16:31.070
  • The camel was the largest animal they knew in Israel--in
  • 00:16:31.080 --> 00:16:34.250
  • Palestine, and the needle is about the smallest little
  • 00:16:34.260 --> 00:16:38.140
  • opening they could think of.
  • 00:16:38.150 --> 00:16:40.070
  • And Jesus said, "It's easier for a rich man to go through an
  • 00:16:40.080 --> 00:16:45.120
  • eye--a camel to go through an eye of a needle than a rich man
  • 00:16:45.130 --> 00:16:48.280
  • to get into heaven."
  • 00:16:48.290 --> 00:16:51.230
  • What in the world is he talking about?
  • 00:16:51.240 --> 00:16:53.050
  • By the way, there's a problem here for you and me,
  • 00:16:53.060 --> 00:17:00.040
  • big problem.
  • 00:17:00.050 --> 00:17:01.270
  • We don't mind saying that it'd be tough for Bill Gates or
  • 00:17:01.280 --> 00:17:06.020
  • Warren Buffett or some of the multi-super millionaires of the
  • 00:17:06.030 --> 00:17:12.230
  • world to get into heaven; but see, that doesn't cover folks
  • 00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:19.120
  • like us, does it?
  • 00:17:19.130 --> 00:17:21.100
  • "They're not talking about us.
  • 00:17:21.110 --> 00:17:22.250
  • So I can just sit back and say, 'Hey, I like those rich guys.
  • 00:17:22.260 --> 00:17:25.170
  • They're not going to get into heaven.'"
  • 00:17:25.180 --> 00:17:30.070
  • Man, you know, easier for a camel to go through
  • 00:17:30.080 --> 00:17:31.220
  • an eye of a needle.
  • 00:17:31.230 --> 00:17:33.080
  • So therefore--but we begin to realize that by the standards of
  • 00:17:33.090 --> 00:17:37.180
  • that day, this is going to really upset you, we're all
  • 00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:41.240
  • rich.
  • 00:17:41.250 --> 00:17:44.190
  • Everybody here is filthy rich.
  • 00:17:44.200 --> 00:17:51.210
  • Oh well, let's soften that verse a little bit.
  • 00:17:51.220 --> 00:17:55.100
  • "You know, if you're talking about me, you know, it'd be hard
  • 00:17:55.110 --> 00:17:58.240
  • for me and you to go through the eye of a needle--easier for a
  • 00:17:58.250 --> 00:18:03.100
  • camel to go through, easier for a camel to go--well, what do you
  • 00:18:03.110 --> 00:18:06.060
  • mean by a camel going through?"
  • 00:18:06.070 --> 00:18:07.240
  • And we've heard the interpretation if you've been
  • 00:18:07.250 --> 00:18:11.000
  • around church for a while that the cities had big gates,
  • 00:18:11.010 --> 00:18:13.240
  • walled cities.
  • 00:18:13.250 --> 00:18:15.190
  • They had little gates.
  • 00:18:15.200 --> 00:18:17.080
  • The big gates were open in the day, but at night they closed
  • 00:18:17.090 --> 00:18:19.250
  • the big gate and someone traveling with a camel and all
  • 00:18:19.260 --> 00:18:22.180
  • loaded with burdens, there would a short gate.
  • 00:18:22.190 --> 00:18:25.230
  • And if they were going to take the camel through a gate about
  • 00:18:25.240 --> 00:18:28.250
  • 4-feet high, that the camel would have to unload his
  • 00:18:28.260 --> 00:18:31.240
  • baggage, get down on those camel knees, and kind of squeeze
  • 00:18:31.250 --> 00:18:35.080
  • through that gate.
  • 00:18:35.090 --> 00:18:37.090
  • They'd have to grease them up a little bit and push them to get
  • 00:18:37.100 --> 00:18:39.090
  • them through the gate and you could get a camel through the
  • 00:18:39.100 --> 00:18:42.050
  • short gate, and that short gate was called the eye
  • 00:18:42.060 --> 00:18:44.180
  • of the needle.
  • 00:18:44.190 --> 00:18:46.040
  • Now we've heard that.
  • 00:18:46.050 --> 00:18:47.170
  • It's good preaching, but it's not true.
  • 00:18:47.180 --> 00:18:50.110
  • It was 2 or 300 years later before they had those eye of a
  • 00:18:50.120 --> 00:18:56.010
  • needle short gates around the walled cities.
  • 00:18:56.020 --> 00:18:58.150
  • Didn't have them when Jesus made this statement.
  • 00:18:58.160 --> 00:19:00.140
  • Whoops. See, the other one be good.
  • 00:19:00.150 --> 00:19:04.090
  • You heard a rich man has to get down on his knees.
  • 00:19:04.100 --> 00:19:06.210
  • He has to take everything off his back.
  • 00:19:06.220 --> 00:19:08.120
  • He has to just be squeezed and have--see, that makes good
  • 00:19:08.130 --> 00:19:11.230
  • preaching and good teaching, but that's not what Jesus was
  • 00:19:11.240 --> 00:19:14.100
  • saying.
  • 00:19:14.110 --> 00:19:15.200
  • He wasn't talking about the short gate.
  • 00:19:15.210 --> 00:19:17.080
  • They didn't have any then.
  • 00:19:17.090 --> 00:19:18.180
  • "Oh, what was he saying?"
  • 00:19:18.190 --> 00:19:20.040
  • Oh, well he says, "It's easier for a camel to go through the
  • 00:19:20.050 --> 00:19:23.090
  • eye of a needle--"
  • 00:19:23.100 --> 00:19:24.280
  • And the word camel in the Greek is very much
  • 00:19:24.290 --> 00:19:27.210
  • like the word cable.
  • 00:19:27.220 --> 00:19:29.250
  • So maybe it's a--they didn't hear right in the--they
  • 00:19:29.260 --> 00:19:33.080
  • were talking.
  • 00:19:33.090 --> 00:19:34.230
  • And so it should be, "It's easier for a cable to go through
  • 00:19:34.240 --> 00:19:37.190
  • the eye of a needle."
  • 00:19:37.200 --> 00:19:39.050
  • That's a little more logical.
  • 00:19:39.060 --> 00:19:40.200
  • Not a giant camel, 1500-pound camel.
  • 00:19:40.210 --> 00:19:42.120
  • I mean, but a cable is a little smaller.
  • 00:19:42.130 --> 00:19:44.020
  • Makes it--it softens it.
  • 00:19:44.030 --> 00:19:46.090
  • See, we like to soften stuff ourselves.
  • 00:19:46.100 --> 00:19:48.130
  • Hard statements.
  • 00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:49.270
  • Somebody said, "Well, I don't like to be called a senior
  • 00:19:49.280 --> 00:19:53.080
  • citizen."
  • 00:19:53.090 --> 00:19:56.020
  • Well, they want to be called chronologically gifted.
  • 00:19:56.030 --> 00:20:01.210
  • "I'm chronologically gifted."
  • 00:20:01.220 --> 00:20:04.270
  • And in Tempe, Arizona, they don't like to talk about all the
  • 00:20:04.280 --> 00:20:08.110
  • potholes they have in the street.
  • 00:20:08.120 --> 00:20:10.090
  • They say it's pavement impairments.
  • 00:20:10.100 --> 00:20:14.020
  • And so it's hard for a camel to go through the eye of a needle,
  • 00:20:14.030 --> 00:20:18.190
  • a rich man--I mean, we want to soften this
  • 00:20:18.200 --> 00:20:20.230
  • statement a little bit.
  • 00:20:20.240 --> 00:20:23.030
  • Well, how in the world can a camel go through the eye
  • 00:20:23.040 --> 00:20:26.000
  • of a needle?
  • 00:20:26.010 --> 00:20:28.090
  • Some years ago, they had something called the
  • 00:20:28.100 --> 00:20:30.270
  • Bass-O-Matic on a comedy strip on television.
  • 00:20:30.280 --> 00:20:34.030
  • You know the Bass-O-Matic?
  • 00:20:34.040 --> 00:20:35.250
  • It was a blender, and they took a bass, a fish--you know
  • 00:20:35.260 --> 00:20:38.290
  • the fish bass?
  • 00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:40.100
  • And they put it in the blender, and they cut that blender on and
  • 00:20:40.110 --> 00:20:42.090
  • they beat that bass all up it to kind of be pureed?
  • 00:20:42.100 --> 00:20:46.050
  • Then they would take it and they would pour it out and say,
  • 00:20:46.060 --> 00:20:48.040
  • "Would you like a cup of bass?"
  • 00:20:48.050 --> 00:20:49.230
  • I mean, they--and so thinking about that, I guess you could
  • 00:20:49.240 --> 00:20:53.140
  • take a camel and put a camel in a big blender.
  • 00:20:53.150 --> 00:20:57.150
  • Now, those who are part of the protection of camels,
  • 00:20:57.160 --> 00:21:00.290
  • don't riot, please.
  • 00:21:01.000 --> 00:21:02.210
  • You could take a camel when he was old and dead and put him in
  • 00:21:02.220 --> 00:21:07.120
  • a blender and you could, I guess, beat him up in there
  • 00:21:07.130 --> 00:21:12.000
  • awhile and puree him and get him sort of liquid, and you
  • 00:21:12.010 --> 00:21:14.270
  • could take all that camel now out and get it in a syringe and
  • 00:21:14.280 --> 00:21:20.110
  • find a needle's eye and take that camel and in time, I guess,
  • 00:21:20.120 --> 00:21:26.110
  • you could have all that purated camel drip through the eye of
  • 00:21:26.120 --> 00:21:30.040
  • that needle, and that's the way a camel can go through the eye
  • 00:21:30.050 --> 00:21:33.210
  • of a needle.
  • 00:21:33.220 --> 00:21:38.270
  • I don't know any other way to do it.
  • 00:21:38.280 --> 00:21:43.150
  • What was Jesus saying?
  • 00:21:43.160 --> 00:21:45.130
  • Let me tell you what he's saying.
  • 00:21:45.140 --> 00:21:48.040
  • He was saying a shocking wow statement.
  • 00:21:48.050 --> 00:21:50.290
  • He was saying simply, "It's easier for a camel to go through
  • 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:54.190
  • the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get to
  • 00:21:54.200 --> 00:21:56.200
  • heaven."
  • 00:21:56.210 --> 00:21:58.000
  • He was saying a rich man cannot get to heaven.
  • 00:21:58.010 --> 00:22:00.260
  • That's what he was saying.
  • 00:22:00.270 --> 00:22:02.290
  • You can't soften that.
  • 00:22:03.000 --> 00:22:06.130
  • He was saying, "A rich person cannot get into heaven."
  • 00:22:06.140 --> 00:22:11.020
  • That's exactly what he was saying.
  • 00:22:11.030 --> 00:22:13.050
  • And if all of us are rich--well, have a good day.
  • 00:22:13.060 --> 00:22:23.060
  • What is going on?
  • 00:22:24.050 --> 00:22:33.000
  • What is the Lord saying?
  • 00:22:33.010 --> 00:22:38.110
  • Look at the rest of it.
  • 00:22:38.120 --> 00:22:40.250
  • "And they were more astonished and said to him,
  • 00:22:40.260 --> 00:22:43.030
  • 'Then who can be saved?'"
  • 00:22:43.040 --> 00:22:45.170
  • That's the question now, isn't it?
  • 00:22:45.180 --> 00:22:47.220
  • It looks like nobody can.
  • 00:22:47.230 --> 00:22:49.280
  • If rich, rich guy can't with all of his entrees, all of his
  • 00:22:49.290 --> 00:22:52.020
  • money, all of his pedigree and every contact he has
  • 00:22:52.030 --> 00:22:54.250
  • and everything.
  • 00:22:54.260 --> 00:22:56.140
  • If he can't be saved--and then it's as tough to be saved, if
  • 00:22:56.150 --> 00:23:00.030
  • you're rich, as a camel going through an eye of a needle.
  • 00:23:00.040 --> 00:23:03.260
  • The disciples are stunned.
  • 00:23:03.270 --> 00:23:05.200
  • They said, "Well, it looks like nobody's going to heaven."
  • 00:23:05.210 --> 00:23:08.220
  • And look at this verse 27.
  • 00:23:08.230 --> 00:23:11.080
  • "With people it is impossible, but with God for all things are
  • 00:23:11.090 --> 00:23:16.270
  • possible."
  • 00:23:16.280 --> 00:23:18.090
  • Jesus said it takes a miracle for anybody to go to heaven.
  • 00:23:18.100 --> 00:23:26.050
  • God has to do it.
  • 00:23:26.060 --> 00:23:28.280
  • We have the idea we get to heaven by, "Oh, these are all
  • 00:23:28.290 --> 00:23:31.200
  • the things I don't do, and these are all the things that I do.
  • 00:23:31.210 --> 00:23:35.070
  • Surely, I'm going to heaven."
  • 00:23:35.080 --> 00:23:37.220
  • Jesus said, "Nonsense.
  • 00:23:37.230 --> 00:23:39.280
  • You'll never get there like that."
  • 00:23:39.290 --> 00:23:42.240
  • He said it takes a miracle for someone to go to heaven.
  • 00:23:42.250 --> 00:23:49.220
  • Let me put this whole thing down on the lowest common
  • 00:23:49.230 --> 00:23:53.130
  • denominator.
  • 00:23:53.140 --> 00:23:56.010
  • If I had stood here a couple of months before and quoted the
  • 00:23:56.020 --> 00:24:00.210
  • words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: "Lay not up for
  • 00:24:00.220 --> 00:24:03.260
  • yourself treasures on earth where moth and rust doth
  • 00:24:03.270 --> 00:24:08.040
  • corrupt, and thieves break through and steal; but lay up
  • 00:24:08.050 --> 00:24:11.050
  • for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor
  • 00:24:11.060 --> 00:24:13.240
  • rust doth corrupt, and thieves do not break through and steal."
  • 00:24:13.250 --> 00:24:16.200
  • you'd say, "Well, you know, good Bible verse."
  • 00:24:16.210 --> 00:24:21.050
  • But I quote that today and I say, "Lay not up for yourselves
  • 00:24:21.060 --> 00:24:25.020
  • treasures on earth where Wall Street goes south.
  • 00:24:25.030 --> 00:24:30.160
  • Lay not up for yourselves treasure on earth."
  • 00:24:30.170 --> 00:24:34.270
  • Meaningless.
  • 00:24:34.280 --> 00:24:36.270
  • Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
  • 00:24:36.280 --> 00:24:40.200
  • There and there alone is our security.
  • 00:24:40.210 --> 00:24:44.200
  • So take whatever god that owns you now and throw him out and
  • 00:24:44.210 --> 00:24:51.130
  • put Jesus Christ in his place, and I'll tell you you'll have
  • 00:24:51.140 --> 00:24:56.010
  • life now and life forever.
  • 00:24:56.020 --> 00:24:59.170
  • Ed: We rarely express out loud many questions we have
  • 00:25:02.130 --> 00:25:04.250
  • about faith.
  • 00:25:04.260 --> 00:25:06.250
  • For example, "Is there really a God?
  • 00:25:06.260 --> 00:25:09.000
  • What if I don't believe in God all the time?
  • 00:25:09.010 --> 00:25:11.050
  • Does God love me?"
  • 00:25:11.060 --> 00:25:13.140
  • While my son, Ben, was at college, he began struggling
  • 00:25:13.150 --> 00:25:16.100
  • with intense doubts about God.
  • 00:25:16.110 --> 00:25:18.230
  • Through that season, he discovered it was okay to have
  • 00:25:18.240 --> 00:25:21.220
  • questions and he was not alone in his doubts and fears.
  • 00:25:21.230 --> 00:25:26.030
  • That experience led him to write a book called "Room for Doubt."
  • 00:25:26.040 --> 00:25:30.200
  • In it, he walks through his own season of doubt and shares how
  • 00:25:30.210 --> 00:25:34.100
  • ultimately it led him to a stronger, more profound faith.
  • 00:25:34.110 --> 00:25:38.260
  • If you or a friend or family member are struggling with their
  • 00:25:38.270 --> 00:25:41.220
  • faith, I want to encourage you to get a copy of
  • 00:25:41.230 --> 00:25:44.200
  • "Room for Doubt."
  • 00:25:44.210 --> 00:25:47.150
  • announcer: To get your copy along with Dr. Young's message
  • 00:25:47.160 --> 00:25:50.070
  • on doubt, call the number on your screen or go online at
  • 00:25:50.080 --> 00:25:54.160
  • winningwalk.org.
  • 00:25:54.170 --> 00:25:58.220
  • Ed: Today's statement is a difficult one, isn't it?
  • 00:26:01.210 --> 00:26:05.030
  • We prefer to soften it, but Jesus told the rich young ruler
  • 00:26:05.040 --> 00:26:09.260
  • exactly what he tells each of us.
  • 00:26:09.270 --> 00:26:12.130
  • You are what owns you.
  • 00:26:12.140 --> 00:26:15.100
  • How did you do on the little test we took?
  • 00:26:15.110 --> 00:26:19.110
  • When you examine your checkbook, when you examine your calendar,
  • 00:26:19.120 --> 00:26:22.290
  • what do they reveal about your real priorities?
  • 00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:28.030
  • What rules your life? Your money?
  • 00:26:28.040 --> 00:26:30.200
  • Your possessions? Your relationship?
  • 00:26:30.210 --> 00:26:33.230
  • Your job?
  • 00:26:33.240 --> 00:26:35.130
  • The rich young ruler in the Scripture got one thing
  • 00:26:35.140 --> 00:26:38.120
  • absolutely right.
  • 00:26:38.130 --> 00:26:40.080
  • He went to the right person, Jesus.
  • 00:26:40.090 --> 00:26:42.290
  • But his possessions got in the way and he didn't allow the
  • 00:26:43.000 --> 00:26:46.080
  • miracle to take place, the miracle that occurs whenever
  • 00:26:46.090 --> 00:26:49.180
  • someone invites Jesus Christ into their life and asks him to
  • 00:26:49.190 --> 00:26:53.200
  • save him and forgive him from all the things that have kept
  • 00:26:53.210 --> 00:26:58.240
  • him from realizing God's best.
  • 00:26:58.250 --> 00:27:02.050
  • Is God running your life?
  • 00:27:02.060 --> 00:27:05.100
  • Can you say that he is leading and guiding your decisions?
  • 00:27:05.110 --> 00:27:09.200
  • Or perhaps do you need to start at square one and ask Jesus to
  • 00:27:09.210 --> 00:27:13.290
  • take charge of your life once and for all?
  • 00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:18.290
  • Nail it down.
  • 00:27:19.000 --> 00:27:21.030
  • Make sure.
  • 00:27:21.040 --> 00:27:23.090
  • If that's you today, please call the number on the screen.
  • 00:27:23.100 --> 00:27:26.050
  • We have people standing by to assist you, and those people are
  • 00:27:26.060 --> 00:27:29.280
  • there, just the right person, to speak with you about this most
  • 00:27:29.290 --> 00:27:34.110
  • important decision you'll ever make; and they're there on a
  • 00:27:34.120 --> 00:27:37.190
  • divine assignment, an appointment that you didn't know
  • 00:27:37.200 --> 00:27:42.180
  • about before today that you've made with these individuals who
  • 00:27:42.190 --> 00:27:46.240
  • will introduce you to a brand new life.
  • 00:27:46.250 --> 00:27:50.280
  • Thank you for watching today.
  • 00:27:50.290 --> 00:27:53.110
  • It is a privilege to study the Word of God with you each week.
  • 00:27:53.120 --> 00:27:57.220
  • Join me again as we take another step on "The Winning Walk" next
  • 00:27:57.230 --> 00:28:01.200
  • week with Jesus Christ.
  • 00:28:01.210 --> 00:28:05.150
  • 00:28:06.230 --> 00:28:16.230
