  • 00:00:09.200 --> 00:00:14.080
  • 00:00:14.090 --> 00:00:17.190
  • Dr. Ed Young: The most misunderstood word
  • 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.280
  • is the word "love."
  • 00:00:24.290 --> 00:00:27.190
  • The word "love" is abused so many, many times
  • 00:00:27.200 --> 00:00:31.130
  • when we utter that word.
  • 00:00:31.140 --> 00:00:33.240
  • The second most misunderstood word is the word "faith."
  • 00:00:33.250 --> 00:00:39.200
  • We misuse faith all the time.
  • 00:00:39.210 --> 00:00:42.200
  • We abuse that word.
  • 00:00:42.210 --> 00:00:44.020
  • We have the idea faith is believing something that is
  • 00:00:44.030 --> 00:00:47.190
  • contrary to common sense.
  • 00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:52.090
  • Most of us think faith is like that little girl in Sunday
  • 00:00:52.100 --> 00:00:55.000
  • school when asked what was faith, and she said, "Faith is
  • 00:00:55.010 --> 00:00:59.290
  • believing something that you know in your heart is not true."
  • 00:01:00.020 --> 00:01:07.240
  • And a lot of people have that idea about faith.
  • 00:01:07.250 --> 00:01:10.150
  • It's some kind of mysterious thing, it's some kind of
  • 00:01:10.160 --> 00:01:14.030
  • mystical thing, it's some kind of esoteric thing, and we really
  • 00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:19.110
  • do not put content in it, and people run around saying, "Oh,
  • 00:01:19.120 --> 00:01:22.150
  • I've got a whole lotta faith.
  • 00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:24.110
  • You know, I've got strong beliefs.
  • 00:01:24.120 --> 00:01:27.160
  • Faith can get me through anything."
  • 00:01:27.170 --> 00:01:29.110
  • But we realize faith just floating out there without
  • 00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:33.080
  • content, without an object is totally ineffective.
  • 00:01:33.090 --> 00:01:37.260
  • It's misdirected.
  • 00:01:37.270 --> 00:01:38.290
  • It's abused faith.
  • 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:41.240
  • My friend, Lee Strobel, said that faith is like pornography.
  • 00:01:41.250 --> 00:01:48.040
  • That will get your attention, and I think he's exactly right.
  • 00:01:49.080 --> 00:01:54.270
  • He reminded us of 1964 when the Supreme Court was trying to make
  • 00:01:54.280 --> 00:02:00.120
  • a decision as to where to draw the lines and to define
  • 00:02:00.130 --> 00:02:04.160
  • pornography, that deadly disease that's infiltrated all of
  • 00:02:04.170 --> 00:02:10.100
  • our society.
  • 00:02:10.110 --> 00:02:11.170
  • And so, Justice Potter Stewart said, he said, "I cannot define
  • 00:02:11.180 --> 00:02:16.240
  • it in a simple sentence, but I know it when I see it," and
  • 00:02:16.250 --> 00:02:22.220
  • that's true of faith.
  • 00:02:22.230 --> 00:02:24.290
  • It's hard to define it in a simple sentence, but we know it
  • 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:28.250
  • when we see it.
  • 00:02:28.260 --> 00:02:30.030
  • The best definition of faith is found in Hebrews chapter number
  • 00:02:30.040 --> 00:02:33.220
  • 11, and we know that it is the substance of things hoped for
  • 00:02:33.230 --> 00:02:40.170
  • and the evidence of things not seen.
  • 00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:43.150
  • But what does that mean?
  • 00:02:43.160 --> 00:02:46.010
  • If I wonder aloud, "Tell me what the substance of things
  • 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:49.110
  • hoped for," what does that mean?
  • 00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:51.150
  • What is the evidence of things that you can't see?
  • 00:02:51.160 --> 00:02:54.260
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:02:54.270 --> 00:02:56.240
  • And that definition would just float out there in oblivion,
  • 00:02:56.250 --> 00:03:01.170
  • except the writer of Hebrews has a long list of men and women who
  • 00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:07.000
  • lived by faith.
  • 00:03:07.010 --> 00:03:08.040
  • He said, "By faith, by faith Abel, by faith, by faith
  • 00:03:08.050 --> 00:03:11.030
  • Abraham, by faith, by faith," and suddenly you see faith is
  • 00:03:11.040 --> 00:03:14.220
  • not something that you accumulate and you might pour
  • 00:03:14.230 --> 00:03:18.250
  • into a container and say, "I've got a little faith, and I want
  • 00:03:18.260 --> 00:03:22.000
  • more faith."
  • 00:03:22.010 --> 00:03:23.280
  • You can't measure faith in terms of quantity.
  • 00:03:23.290 --> 00:03:30.030
  • You just can't do it.
  • 00:03:30.040 --> 00:03:31.110
  • In fact, if you would take a picture of faith the picture
  • 00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:36.090
  • would be blurred, because real faith is always moving.
  • 00:03:36.100 --> 00:03:41.030
  • It is never static and stationary and therefore when we
  • 00:03:41.040 --> 00:03:47.050
  • look at faith we have to say, "Man, what exactly is faith?
  • 00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:52.290
  • How does it operate?"
  • 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:54.110
  • All of us would stand and say, "You know, I want more faith
  • 00:03:54.120 --> 00:03:57.200
  • than I have," and we have two tremendous stories of faith.
  • 00:03:57.210 --> 00:04:04.200
  • One is a faith that took place on top of a high mountain.
  • 00:04:04.210 --> 00:04:10.210
  • The other is faith that took place in a low valley.
  • 00:04:10.220 --> 00:04:15.110
  • Now, no one knows for sure which mountain in Israel is the mount
  • 00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:19.270
  • of Transfiguration.
  • 00:04:19.280 --> 00:04:20.280
  • A lot of people think it was Mount Hermon.
  • 00:04:20.290 --> 00:04:23.120
  • I like to think it was Mount Tabor, because I've been on
  • 00:04:23.130 --> 00:04:26.190
  • Tabor and I've never been on Hermon, but you could debate
  • 00:04:26.200 --> 00:04:30.200
  • that.
  • 00:04:30.210 --> 00:04:31.260
  • But Mount Tabor is where we know that Jesus took those three
  • 00:04:31.270 --> 00:04:36.070
  • intimate apostles: Peter, James, and John.
  • 00:04:36.080 --> 00:04:39.210
  • He had announced to them that he was soon to die, and they didn't
  • 00:04:39.220 --> 00:04:43.090
  • get it, and then, on top of that, he added a little phrase
  • 00:04:43.100 --> 00:04:47.140
  • that I'm sure totally confused the big three.
  • 00:04:47.150 --> 00:04:51.010
  • We see it there in Matthew again.
  • 00:04:51.020 --> 00:04:56.250
  • Not in chapter 17, but chapter 16, verse 27.
  • 00:04:56.260 --> 00:04:59.280
  • It says, "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of
  • 00:04:59.290 --> 00:05:06.250
  • his Father."
  • 00:05:06.260 --> 00:05:08.100
  • Does anybody know what "the glory of his Father" means?
  • 00:05:08.110 --> 00:05:11.110
  • The bottom line, I don't think those apostles knew.
  • 00:05:14.150 --> 00:05:17.250
  • He told them, "I'm going to die.
  • 00:05:17.260 --> 00:05:19.170
  • I'm gonna go to the glory of my Father."
  • 00:05:19.180 --> 00:05:22.050
  • And they just sat there like we do and said,
  • 00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:24.130
  • "The glory of our Father.
  • 00:05:24.140 --> 00:05:25.130
  • I wonder what that is."
  • 00:05:25.140 --> 00:05:28.040
  • And then it says after six days Jesus took the big three, left
  • 00:05:28.050 --> 00:05:33.040
  • nine down in the Valley of Jezreel, the foot of Mount
  • 00:05:33.050 --> 00:05:36.110
  • Tabor, and they went to the top of the mountain, and we read
  • 00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:40.200
  • what happened.
  • 00:05:40.210 --> 00:05:41.270
  • Verse--chapter 17 of Matthew, "Six days later Jesus took with
  • 00:05:41.280 --> 00:05:47.030
  • him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up to a
  • 00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:50.290
  • high mountain by themselves.
  • 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:54.150
  • And he was transfigured--" We get our word "metamorphosis."
  • 00:05:54.160 --> 00:06:01.170
  • In other words, Jesus in the flesh suddenly was turned inside
  • 00:06:01.180 --> 00:06:06.220
  • out and his glory was revealed.
  • 00:06:06.230 --> 00:06:12.220
  • It wasn't a masquerade.
  • 00:06:12.230 --> 00:06:14.050
  • A masquerade you hide the outside, but he took the inside
  • 00:06:14.060 --> 00:06:19.190
  • and revealed that it was turned outside and the glory of God was
  • 00:06:19.200 --> 00:06:23.140
  • revealed.
  • 00:06:23.150 --> 00:06:24.100
  • You say, "What is this glory like?"
  • 00:06:24.110 --> 00:06:26.090
  • It's like the glory that Jesus had in Philippians 2 prior to
  • 00:06:26.100 --> 00:06:30.090
  • creation, when he was there with God the Father and God
  • 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:34.250
  • the Holy Spirit. The glory of God.
  • 00:06:34.260 --> 00:06:36.160
  • It was that glory.
  • 00:06:36.170 --> 00:06:38.050
  • It was the glory we'll see in Revelation chapter 1 in his
  • 00:06:38.060 --> 00:06:41.150
  • second coming.
  • 00:06:41.160 --> 00:06:43.030
  • It is the glory of God.
  • 00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:45.100
  • He was transfigured.
  • 00:06:45.110 --> 00:06:47.040
  • There was a metamorphosis and suddenly his inside was revealed
  • 00:06:47.050 --> 00:06:52.190
  • in Godman, the glory on top of that mountain.
  • 00:06:52.200 --> 00:06:56.020
  • Transfigured was the Son of the living God and then the
  • 00:06:56.030 --> 00:06:59.120
  • description of it.
  • 00:06:59.130 --> 00:07:02.040
  • "He was transfigured before 'em; and his face shone like the sun,
  • 00:07:02.050 --> 00:07:06.110
  • and his garments became white as light."
  • 00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:10.160
  • Can you imagine faith shining?
  • 00:07:10.170 --> 00:07:14.260
  • Your face shining as the sun.
  • 00:07:14.270 --> 00:07:17.210
  • Your garments as white as light, the transfiguration.
  • 00:07:17.220 --> 00:07:21.060
  • What a marvelous supernatural moment in the history of man on
  • 00:07:21.070 --> 00:07:26.050
  • top of the mount and then we see what happened.
  • 00:07:26.060 --> 00:07:31.030
  • It gets better.
  • 00:07:31.040 --> 00:07:32.120
  • Verse 3, "And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking
  • 00:07:32.130 --> 00:07:36.200
  • with him."
  • 00:07:36.210 --> 00:07:37.200
  • There was Moses, who was the prince of lawmakers.
  • 00:07:37.210 --> 00:07:42.110
  • He was the predictor of the coming of the Messiah.
  • 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:45.050
  • There was Elijah, who was the precursor of the coming of
  • 00:07:45.060 --> 00:07:48.210
  • the Messiah.
  • 00:07:48.220 --> 00:07:49.170
  • Remember, Elijah was to come before.
  • 00:07:49.180 --> 00:07:51.230
  • We see that in John the Baptist and here is Jesus now
  • 00:07:51.240 --> 00:07:56.120
  • transfigured.
  • 00:07:56.130 --> 00:07:58.150
  • The glory of God, the purity of God, the wholeness of God, the
  • 00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:02.090
  • light of God being revealed in him and now he's talking
  • 00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:06.070
  • with Moses.
  • 00:08:06.080 --> 00:08:07.040
  • He's talking with Elijah the lawgiver.
  • 00:08:07.050 --> 00:08:10.120
  • That God, we know, in Christ fulfilled every law and the
  • 00:08:10.130 --> 00:08:14.250
  • Prophet, the King of the prophet.
  • 00:08:14.260 --> 00:08:16.130
  • We know in Christ all the prophecies were fulfilled.
  • 00:08:16.140 --> 00:08:19.110
  • What a moment when the transcendent became imminent.
  • 00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:24.130
  • A supernatural time.
  • 00:08:24.140 --> 00:08:25.260
  • If we'd been there I'm sure you'd say, "I'd be in awe and
  • 00:08:25.270 --> 00:08:30.160
  • wonder and amazement and praise," but I want you to see
  • 00:08:30.170 --> 00:08:36.040
  • something here.
  • 00:08:36.050 --> 00:08:38.240
  • There is a time to speak, and there is a time to be silent.
  • 00:08:38.250 --> 00:08:45.290
  • Count Zinzendorf said he could be silent in eight different
  • 00:08:47.190 --> 00:08:50.250
  • languages and, of all times, if we were there we'd certainly
  • 00:08:50.260 --> 00:08:57.170
  • at least be silent, but here is old Peter.
  • 00:08:57.180 --> 00:09:02.120
  • My, my, Pete.
  • 00:09:02.130 --> 00:09:04.280
  • Look at verse 4.
  • 00:09:04.290 --> 00:09:06.060
  • He said, "Peter said to Jesus, 'Lord, it is good for us to be
  • 00:09:06.070 --> 00:09:10.100
  • here; if you wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for
  • 00:09:10.110 --> 00:09:15.060
  • you, one for Moses, one for Elijah--' While he was still
  • 00:09:15.070 --> 00:09:18.070
  • speaking," Peter is still speaking, "a bright cloud
  • 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:22.140
  • overshadowed them," shekinah, the presence of God, "and
  • 00:09:22.150 --> 00:09:25.140
  • behold, a voice out of the cloud said, 'This is my beloved Son,
  • 00:09:25.150 --> 00:09:31.010
  • with whom I am well-pleased; listen to him!' And when the
  • 00:09:31.020 --> 00:09:35.280
  • disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were
  • 00:09:35.290 --> 00:09:40.170
  • terrified."
  • 00:09:40.180 --> 00:09:41.260
  • God the Father spoke as the Shekinah of God fell upon that
  • 00:09:41.270 --> 00:09:47.070
  • group.
  • 00:09:47.080 --> 00:09:48.130
  • Jesus transfigured.
  • 00:09:48.140 --> 00:09:51.020
  • Oh, me, and there was Moses and there was Elijah, and now God
  • 00:09:51.030 --> 00:09:55.270
  • speaks and the Shekinah came, and these three apostles fall to
  • 00:09:55.280 --> 00:10:00.010
  • their face.
  • 00:10:00.020 --> 00:10:00.290
  • And God said, "Listen to him.
  • 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:05.200
  • Listen to him."
  • 00:10:05.210 --> 00:10:07.260
  • And then, I love this little verse.
  • 00:10:07.270 --> 00:10:09.290
  • I've loved it for years and years.
  • 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.100
  • And Jesus then went to Peter, James, and John.
  • 00:10:13.110 --> 00:10:17.110
  • They were flat down, it says.
  • 00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:19.010
  • "Get up. It's all right.
  • 00:10:19.020 --> 00:10:20.200
  • Get up.
  • 00:10:20.210 --> 00:10:21.190
  • Get up. It's all right.
  • 00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:23.270
  • Don't be afraid."
  • 00:10:23.280 --> 00:10:25.030
  • "And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus
  • 00:10:25.040 --> 00:10:29.060
  • himself."
  • 00:10:29.070 --> 00:10:31.240
  • It's now Elijah, Moses, and Jesus.
  • 00:10:31.250 --> 00:10:34.090
  • The cloud came.
  • 00:10:34.100 --> 00:10:35.280
  • Elijah and Moses were gone, and Jesus stood alone.
  • 00:10:35.290 --> 00:10:41.010
  • Preeminent Son of the living God,
  • 00:10:41.020 --> 00:10:46.020
  • Jesus, stood alone.
  • 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:50.130
  • Would you say that's a mountaintop experience?
  • 00:10:50.140 --> 00:10:54.140
  • And on that kind of experience the only way we can respond is
  • 00:10:54.150 --> 00:10:57.240
  • with a resounding wow!
  • 00:10:57.250 --> 00:11:00.080
  • With a resounding wow!
  • 00:11:00.090 --> 00:11:04.170
  • Now, we have mountaintop experiences, but if you just
  • 00:11:04.180 --> 00:11:08.240
  • stay on the mountain, as Peter said, "Let's build a tabernacle.
  • 00:11:08.250 --> 00:11:11.130
  • Let's just stay up here.
  • 00:11:11.140 --> 00:11:12.130
  • The kingdom has gone. Boy, this is it.
  • 00:11:12.140 --> 00:11:14.060
  • Who would wanna go anywhere else," but mountaintop
  • 00:11:14.070 --> 00:11:17.180
  • experiences we have them so that we will be equipped to be
  • 00:11:17.190 --> 00:11:23.190
  • effective when we go down in the valley.
  • 00:11:23.200 --> 00:11:27.080
  • It's the mountaintop of glory, and it's the valley of
  • 00:11:27.090 --> 00:11:30.130
  • ministering and meeting need.
  • 00:11:30.140 --> 00:11:32.010
  • If you're in the valley without having been on the mountain, you
  • 00:11:32.020 --> 00:11:37.170
  • run out of ammunition.
  • 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:39.150
  • The valley empties us in service and love and ministry and unless
  • 00:11:39.160 --> 00:11:45.090
  • we go back on the mountain and get filled, get full again, we
  • 00:11:45.100 --> 00:11:48.080
  • won't be effective in the valley.
  • 00:11:48.090 --> 00:11:51.080
  • People who just live in the valley, they get tired, they get
  • 00:11:51.090 --> 00:11:54.150
  • empty, they get jaded, they get ineffective, they get dull and
  • 00:11:54.160 --> 00:11:58.170
  • boring, and the same old SOS that they go through.
  • 00:11:58.180 --> 00:12:02.050
  • They're not interested in anything.
  • 00:12:02.060 --> 00:12:04.250
  • They burn out and they burn up, so we have to have the glory of
  • 00:12:04.260 --> 00:12:08.270
  • the mountain to be effective in the valley.
  • 00:12:08.280 --> 00:12:11.270
  • We need Mount Tabor because we'll go down to the Valley of
  • 00:12:11.280 --> 00:12:17.060
  • Jezreel.
  • 00:12:17.070 --> 00:12:18.140
  • This is true of every life, and I want you to look and see what
  • 00:12:18.150 --> 00:12:22.020
  • happened.
  • 00:12:22.030 --> 00:12:23.080
  • Verse 9, "And they were coming down from the mountain--"
  • 00:12:23.090 --> 00:12:28.000
  • Top.
  • 00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:32.090
  • Bottom.
  • 00:12:32.100 --> 00:12:33.220
  • The mountain of Transfiguration.
  • 00:12:33.230 --> 00:12:35.090
  • Wow!
  • 00:12:35.100 --> 00:12:36.050
  • And now we see a wow in the valley.
  • 00:12:36.060 --> 00:12:40.090
  • Matthew 17:14 following.
  • 00:12:40.100 --> 00:12:43.060
  • "When they came to the crowd, a man came to Jesus, falling on
  • 00:12:45.150 --> 00:12:48.240
  • his knees before him, saying, 'Lord, have mercy on my son, for
  • 00:12:48.250 --> 00:12:53.190
  • he is a lunatic and very ill; for he often falls into the fire
  • 00:12:53.200 --> 00:12:58.180
  • and often into the water.
  • 00:12:58.190 --> 00:13:00.250
  • I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.'"
  • 00:13:00.260 --> 00:13:04.120
  • Now, I want you to now take and just flip over with me to Mark.
  • 00:13:07.150 --> 00:13:13.000
  • Keep your place there in Matthew.
  • 00:13:13.010 --> 00:13:14.260
  • Chapter number 9, reading verse 23 following.
  • 00:13:14.270 --> 00:13:18.220
  • "And Jesus said to him, 'If you can?
  • 00:13:18.230 --> 00:13:21.270
  • All things are possible to him who believes.'
  • 00:13:21.280 --> 00:13:26.120
  • Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, 'I do
  • 00:13:26.130 --> 00:13:29.080
  • believe; help my unbelief.'"
  • 00:13:29.090 --> 00:13:31.070
  • Verse 25, "When Jesus saw that a crowd was
  • 00:13:31.080 --> 00:13:33.260
  • rapidly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to
  • 00:13:33.270 --> 00:13:38.180
  • it, 'You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and
  • 00:13:38.190 --> 00:13:44.060
  • do not enter him again.'" Now, back to Matthew, picking up
  • 00:13:44.070 --> 00:13:49.080
  • chapter 17.
  • 00:13:49.090 --> 00:13:50.140
  • "And Jesus answered and said," see the parallel?
  • 00:13:50.150 --> 00:13:53.100
  • "'You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be
  • 00:13:53.110 --> 00:13:57.180
  • with you?
  • 00:13:57.190 --> 00:13:58.150
  • How long should I put up with you?
  • 00:13:58.160 --> 00:14:00.020
  • Bring him here to me,' and Jesus rebuked him, the demon came out
  • 00:14:00.030 --> 00:14:05.010
  • of him, and the boy was cured at once.
  • 00:14:05.020 --> 00:14:08.260
  • Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, 'Why could
  • 00:14:08.270 --> 00:14:13.120
  • we not drive it out?' and he said to them, 'Because of the
  • 00:14:13.130 --> 00:14:17.080
  • littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have
  • 00:14:17.090 --> 00:14:22.060
  • the faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this
  • 00:14:22.070 --> 00:14:26.270
  • mountain, "Move from here to there," and it will move; and
  • 00:14:26.280 --> 00:14:31.180
  • nothing will be impossible for you.
  • 00:14:31.190 --> 00:14:36.270
  • [But this kind does not go out except by prayer
  • 00:14:36.280 --> 00:14:40.290
  • and fasting.]'"
  • 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:44.180
  • And in this story that I read you have some illustrations
  • 00:14:44.190 --> 00:14:49.110
  • of faith.
  • 00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:50.080
  • First, you have no faith.
  • 00:14:50.090 --> 00:14:55.010
  • Look at verse 14.
  • 00:14:55.020 --> 00:14:56.190
  • Jesus said the unbelieving and perverted generation.
  • 00:14:56.200 --> 00:15:01.070
  • Ladies and gentlemen, we are living in a generation that more
  • 00:15:01.080 --> 00:15:06.110
  • and more has no faith, no faith in the transcendent, no faith
  • 00:15:06.120 --> 00:15:12.030
  • in God, no faith in his Son, no faith.
  • 00:15:12.040 --> 00:15:16.090
  • In fact, in our lifetime we're seeing more and more
  • 00:15:16.100 --> 00:15:20.050
  • the secularization of everything we're about.
  • 00:15:20.060 --> 00:15:22.200
  • America has basically forgotten its Judeo-Christian roots and as
  • 00:15:22.210 --> 00:15:27.210
  • the secularization of our society comes more and more
  • 00:15:27.220 --> 00:15:32.120
  • people stand up and say, "I don't have any faith.
  • 00:15:32.130 --> 00:15:35.280
  • I have no faith in all of that."
  • 00:15:35.290 --> 00:15:38.100
  • It started with the enlightenment, and it has
  • 00:15:38.110 --> 00:15:40.240
  • progressed all the way through our Western culture until today.
  • 00:15:40.250 --> 00:15:44.160
  • No faith.
  • 00:15:44.170 --> 00:15:46.060
  • A generation of no faith always becomes just exactly what Jesus
  • 00:15:46.070 --> 00:15:50.170
  • says: perverted.
  • 00:15:50.180 --> 00:15:53.120
  • That which seems to be right to them is really wrong to
  • 00:15:53.130 --> 00:15:57.100
  • Almighty God.
  • 00:15:57.110 --> 00:15:58.230
  • A perverted, confused, mixed-up generation.
  • 00:15:58.240 --> 00:16:03.080
  • There is no faith.
  • 00:16:03.090 --> 00:16:05.110
  • Also, there is little faith.
  • 00:16:05.120 --> 00:16:08.070
  • Remember when the apostles--after Jesus had healed
  • 00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:11.280
  • the boy the apostles moved to one side, the nine who were
  • 00:16:11.290 --> 00:16:15.210
  • there who tried to heal him, and they said, "Why couldn't we heal
  • 00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:20.240
  • him?"
  • 00:16:20.250 --> 00:16:22.110
  • See, Matthew 10 they had been sent out on a mission by Jesus.
  • 00:16:22.120 --> 00:16:26.200
  • They'd healed folks.
  • 00:16:26.210 --> 00:16:28.060
  • The lame had walked.
  • 00:16:28.070 --> 00:16:29.140
  • The blind had seen and now they say, "Well, why couldn't we heal
  • 00:16:29.150 --> 00:16:32.070
  • this boy?"
  • 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:34.090
  • And Jesus said, "You can't heal when there is the absence of
  • 00:16:34.100 --> 00:16:40.110
  • prayer and fasting."
  • 00:16:40.120 --> 00:16:42.020
  • In other words, while Jesus was gone that period of time they
  • 00:16:42.030 --> 00:16:47.000
  • didn't stay obedient in the discipline of the faith.
  • 00:16:47.010 --> 00:16:50.000
  • They thought healing was just a formula.
  • 00:16:50.010 --> 00:16:52.080
  • Bang, bang, bang.
  • 00:16:52.090 --> 00:16:53.270
  • Pour some oil, lay your hands on 'em, boom, "You're healed."
  • 00:16:53.280 --> 00:16:56.250
  • Look, it worked, and it worked again and again, until finally
  • 00:16:56.260 --> 00:17:00.280
  • it was a magical thing and not a supernatural God thing, and they
  • 00:17:00.290 --> 00:17:05.120
  • couldn't heal the boy.
  • 00:17:05.130 --> 00:17:07.220
  • They had little faith, little faith.
  • 00:17:07.230 --> 00:17:10.190
  • They had faith in the manipulation of the methodology
  • 00:17:10.200 --> 00:17:15.140
  • of healing in the name of Jesus and therefore it didn't work.
  • 00:17:15.150 --> 00:17:19.260
  • And then, we see in that same story I read doubting faith,
  • 00:17:19.270 --> 00:17:24.290
  • doubting faith.
  • 00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:26.200
  • That's what I read in the Gospel of Mark parallel to this.
  • 00:17:26.210 --> 00:17:30.180
  • Now, look at the situation.
  • 00:17:30.190 --> 00:17:32.190
  • These nine guys, I don't know how long they'd tried to heal
  • 00:17:32.200 --> 00:17:36.000
  • the boy.
  • 00:17:36.010 --> 00:17:37.070
  • I don't know what gyrations they'd been through and prayer
  • 00:17:37.080 --> 00:17:39.170
  • and everything else, but they'd been ineffective.
  • 00:17:39.180 --> 00:17:42.270
  • He was still epileptic, he was still demon-possessed, and the
  • 00:17:42.280 --> 00:17:46.270
  • other gospel tells us he couldn't speak and he couldn't
  • 00:17:46.280 --> 00:17:49.120
  • hear.
  • 00:17:49.130 --> 00:17:50.220
  • He was the only son of the father, as Jesus is the only son
  • 00:17:50.230 --> 00:17:54.000
  • of God.
  • 00:17:54.010 --> 00:17:55.070
  • A lot of parallelism there and then we see they couldn't do it
  • 00:17:55.080 --> 00:17:58.060
  • and then they come and Jesus goes to the father, and the
  • 00:18:00.170 --> 00:18:05.110
  • father said, "Can you heal my boy?"
  • 00:18:05.120 --> 00:18:06.280
  • And Jesus in the other gospel passages asked, "How long has he
  • 00:18:06.290 --> 00:18:11.030
  • been sick?
  • 00:18:11.040 --> 00:18:12.180
  • What's the nature of his ailment?"
  • 00:18:12.190 --> 00:18:14.020
  • And the father tells him and then Jesus said something to
  • 00:18:14.030 --> 00:18:18.290
  • that dad that's rather remarkable.
  • 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:21.040
  • This is doubting faith, by the way.
  • 00:18:21.050 --> 00:18:22.290
  • Jesus said, "If you can believe, all things are possible."
  • 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:28.000
  • Now, if you'd been that dad what would you have told Jesus?
  • 00:18:31.020 --> 00:18:35.090
  • "Oh, I believe you can do it.
  • 00:18:35.100 --> 00:18:38.170
  • I don't have any doubt about it. You're Jesus."
  • 00:18:38.180 --> 00:18:41.030
  • No, no, no, no, all of his nine followers had failed, perhaps,
  • 00:18:41.040 --> 00:18:46.090
  • over a period of time, and the father was honest.
  • 00:18:46.100 --> 00:18:52.180
  • When you and I begin to try to deceive and lie to God we're in
  • 00:18:52.190 --> 00:18:57.100
  • monumental trouble.
  • 00:18:57.110 --> 00:19:00.050
  • He said, "Lord, I believe.
  • 00:19:00.060 --> 00:19:03.010
  • I believe you-- but help my--now my unbelief.
  • 00:19:03.020 --> 00:19:05.190
  • I believe you can do it, but I doubt it."
  • 00:19:05.200 --> 00:19:08.260
  • That's what the father said.
  • 00:19:08.270 --> 00:19:09.230
  • "I doubt you can do it."
  • 00:19:09.240 --> 00:19:11.180
  • So, on a scale of 1 to 10, if a 10 was healing faith to the max,
  • 00:19:11.190 --> 00:19:16.290
  • how much faith do you think that father had?
  • 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:18.120
  • That he had 6?
  • 00:19:18.130 --> 00:19:19.120
  • Did he have a 4?
  • 00:19:19.130 --> 00:19:21.240
  • I don't think he had a 1.
  • 00:19:21.250 --> 00:19:23.240
  • I don't think--he had about a 0.0005 faith, just a little
  • 00:19:23.250 --> 00:19:29.080
  • touch of faith, because he'd seen failure by the doctors,
  • 00:19:29.090 --> 00:19:33.270
  • failure by the magicians, failure by the apostles and now
  • 00:19:33.280 --> 00:19:38.020
  • Jesus came, and he just had just a little bit of faith.
  • 00:19:38.030 --> 00:19:42.220
  • But he was honest with the Lord.
  • 00:19:42.230 --> 00:19:44.220
  • He said, "Do you believe?"
  • 00:19:44.230 --> 00:19:47.050
  • And he says, "I believe, but I've got some big doubts,"
  • 00:19:47.060 --> 00:19:53.020
  • and in the next breath, bang, Jesus healed the boy.
  • 00:19:53.030 --> 00:19:57.190
  • Hmm.
  • 00:19:59.110 --> 00:20:02.040
  • Jesus healed the boy and that little bitty faith became
  • 00:20:02.050 --> 00:20:07.120
  • mountain-moving faith.
  • 00:20:07.130 --> 00:20:10.250
  • The boy was whole and that's the way faith operates in every
  • 00:20:10.260 --> 00:20:17.270
  • single life, and Jesus says if you have the faith the size of
  • 00:20:17.280 --> 00:20:23.050
  • a mustard seed, it would be a black mustard seed about
  • 00:20:23.060 --> 00:20:27.030
  • 39/1.000th of an inch long.
  • 00:20:27.040 --> 00:20:31.020
  • Jesus said if you have that much faith you can say to Mount
  • 00:20:31.030 --> 00:20:36.000
  • Vesuvius, "Move to South Texas," and, bam, it will be moved.
  • 00:20:36.010 --> 00:20:41.180
  • Mountain-moving faith.
  • 00:20:43.270 --> 00:20:45.150
  • What does that phrase mean, that wow expression?
  • 00:20:45.160 --> 00:20:51.000
  • "Boy, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can
  • 00:20:51.010 --> 00:20:54.020
  • move--" What does that mean?
  • 00:20:54.030 --> 00:20:55.100
  • Mountain-moving faith was a proverbial expression.
  • 00:20:55.110 --> 00:20:59.180
  • For example, I saw a guy the other day.
  • 00:20:59.190 --> 00:21:02.160
  • He'd been driving, let's say, a little bitty car, and he says,
  • 00:21:02.170 --> 00:21:04.290
  • "You know, I've got a bigger car now."
  • 00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:07.220
  • And I'd say, "Well, how big is it?"
  • 00:21:07.230 --> 00:21:09.180
  • He'd say, "That car I bought is big as Dallas."
  • 00:21:09.190 --> 00:21:12.200
  • Now, you know literally that car is not as big as Dallas,
  • 00:21:12.210 --> 00:21:16.100
  • but it's a proverbial expression that we use.
  • 00:21:16.110 --> 00:21:20.190
  • Somebody says, "Well, you're making a mountain out of a mole
  • 00:21:20.200 --> 00:21:23.110
  • hill," is that what you're doing?
  • 00:21:23.120 --> 00:21:25.260
  • No, you're just exaggerating something.
  • 00:21:25.270 --> 00:21:28.010
  • It's a proverbial expression.
  • 00:21:28.020 --> 00:21:29.190
  • That's what this is, mountain-moving faith, and it
  • 00:21:29.200 --> 00:21:32.040
  • was used when the rabbis would take the Torah and interpret it
  • 00:21:32.050 --> 00:21:38.120
  • to the people and when a scholarly, skilled rabbi would
  • 00:21:38.130 --> 00:21:42.270
  • interpret Scripture in such a remarkable way they would say
  • 00:21:42.280 --> 00:21:47.020
  • about that teacher that "you know, you pulverized that text.
  • 00:21:47.030 --> 00:21:51.240
  • You flattened out that text.
  • 00:21:51.250 --> 00:21:53.250
  • That you just moved mountains away from that text so we can
  • 00:21:53.260 --> 00:21:57.200
  • really understand it."
  • 00:21:57.210 --> 00:21:59.010
  • That was the phrase that was employed, so mountain-moving
  • 00:21:59.020 --> 00:22:04.250
  • faith--remember faith is not how much you have of it.
  • 00:22:04.260 --> 00:22:11.130
  • It's the quality of it, and God can take just a smidgen of faith
  • 00:22:12.130 --> 00:22:19.000
  • and do amazing things.
  • 00:22:19.010 --> 00:22:23.190
  • Little boy.
  • 00:22:23.200 --> 00:22:25.190
  • At the end of the day everybody coming out of the office
  • 00:22:25.200 --> 00:22:29.220
  • building, went down and stood on the curb in the middle of
  • 00:22:29.230 --> 00:22:34.100
  • the block.
  • 00:22:34.110 --> 00:22:35.270
  • Not on a corner, but he stood right in the middle of
  • 00:22:35.280 --> 00:22:38.160
  • the block, on a curb, had a little satchel on his back,
  • 00:22:38.170 --> 00:22:42.270
  • was standing there.
  • 00:22:42.280 --> 00:22:44.110
  • Cars going by.
  • 00:22:44.120 --> 00:22:46.120
  • Businessman came down and saw the kid there, and he said,
  • 00:22:46.130 --> 00:22:48.260
  • "You know," he said, "son, what are you doing?
  • 00:22:48.270 --> 00:22:53.030
  • Why are you standing here?"
  • 00:22:53.040 --> 00:22:54.220
  • And he said, "I'm waiting for the bus to pick me up."
  • 00:22:54.230 --> 00:22:57.200
  • The man said, "The bus doesn't stop in the middle of the block.
  • 00:22:57.210 --> 00:23:02.020
  • It will stop only if you go to the--go to the corner there,
  • 00:23:02.030 --> 00:23:04.250
  • and you turn left, go across the street, go another block
  • 00:23:04.260 --> 00:23:07.090
  • up on that corner. That's the bus stop.
  • 00:23:07.100 --> 00:23:09.070
  • That's where the bus stops.
  • 00:23:09.080 --> 00:23:10.150
  • He'll not pick you up here."
  • 00:23:10.160 --> 00:23:13.020
  • Little boy said, "I've got a lotta faith the bus will pick me
  • 00:23:13.030 --> 00:23:17.080
  • up right here."
  • 00:23:17.090 --> 00:23:19.090
  • The businessman said, "Son, I don't care how much faith you
  • 00:23:20.070 --> 00:23:23.090
  • have.
  • 00:23:23.100 --> 00:23:24.160
  • The bus is not gonna stop for you in the middle of the block.
  • 00:23:24.170 --> 00:23:27.090
  • Not here."
  • 00:23:27.100 --> 00:23:28.290
  • He said, "Well, I've got faith that it will."
  • 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:32.200
  • The businessman said, "You're wasting your time."
  • 00:23:32.210 --> 00:23:36.210
  • You know, the businessman gave the kid good advice, didn't he?
  • 00:23:36.220 --> 00:23:40.130
  • I've seen a lotta people like that.
  • 00:23:40.140 --> 00:23:41.240
  • I've seen 'em, "I've got a lotta faith that this is gonna
  • 00:23:41.250 --> 00:23:45.180
  • happen or that's gonna happen or this is not gonna happen.
  • 00:23:45.190 --> 00:23:48.160
  • I just got so much faith, and I believe it's gonna happen,"
  • 00:23:48.170 --> 00:23:51.100
  • and their faith is not based on anything, right?
  • 00:23:51.110 --> 00:23:55.080
  • And it just doesn't happen on that kinda faith, right?
  • 00:23:55.090 --> 00:23:59.140
  • 'Cause it's just nebulous kind of generalization of faith.
  • 00:23:59.150 --> 00:24:04.110
  • I hear that kind of nonsensical faithful.
  • 00:24:04.120 --> 00:24:06.190
  • "Oh, I just got a lot of faith.
  • 00:24:06.200 --> 00:24:08.240
  • I'm gonna believe, and I'm gonna keep on believing, and I'm gonna
  • 00:24:08.250 --> 00:24:12.220
  • have faith and more faith."
  • 00:24:12.230 --> 00:24:14.110
  • And that little lad said, "Well, I have faith the bus is gonna
  • 00:24:14.120 --> 00:24:16.090
  • stop here."
  • 00:24:16.100 --> 00:24:17.240
  • Businessman said, "No way."
  • 00:24:17.250 --> 00:24:19.120
  • Good advice from the businessman, but about
  • 00:24:19.130 --> 00:24:24.200
  • that time big, old bus coming down the road.
  • 00:24:24.210 --> 00:24:29.100
  • The businessman turned and looked back and said,
  • 00:24:29.110 --> 00:24:31.180
  • "I wanna see his reaction when that bus goes zipping by."
  • 00:24:31.190 --> 00:24:35.140
  • Little boy is standing there.
  • 00:24:35.150 --> 00:24:37.220
  • Here comes the big bus, comes right to that little boy,
  • 00:24:37.230 --> 00:24:42.060
  • comes over to that direction.
  • 00:24:42.070 --> 00:24:44.070
  • [braking sound]
  • 00:24:44.080 --> 00:24:47.280
  • The bus door opens.
  • 00:24:48.110 --> 00:24:50.230
  • Little boy puts his sack over his back, stepped off the curb,
  • 00:24:50.240 --> 00:24:55.280
  • walks up the steps of the bus, the bus door opens, he gets on,
  • 00:24:55.290 --> 00:24:59.240
  • and he turns around and looks at the businessman.
  • 00:24:59.250 --> 00:25:02.000
  • He said, "Mister, the bus driver is my daddy."
  • 00:25:02.010 --> 00:25:06.250
  • Listen carefully.
  • 00:25:16.110 --> 00:25:19.230
  • When your heavenly Father is at the wheel your faith is
  • 00:25:19.240 --> 00:25:27.070
  • placed--there is an object of your faith and that kind of
  • 00:25:27.080 --> 00:25:31.210
  • faith that we demonstrate when the heavenly Father is at the
  • 00:25:31.220 --> 00:25:35.200
  • wheel all we have to do is step off the curb and step up those
  • 00:25:35.210 --> 00:25:40.190
  • steps and enter that door, and our heavenly Father will take
  • 00:25:40.200 --> 00:25:47.010
  • you on the ride of a lifetime.
  • 00:25:47.020 --> 00:25:50.180
  • Dr. Young: We rarely express out loud many questions we have
  • 00:25:57.280 --> 00:26:00.210
  • about faith.
  • 00:26:00.220 --> 00:26:02.010
  • For example, is there really a God?
  • 00:26:02.020 --> 00:26:04.070
  • What if I don't believe in God all the time?
  • 00:26:04.080 --> 00:26:06.200
  • Does God love me?
  • 00:26:06.210 --> 00:26:09.030
  • When my son, Ben, was at college he began struggling with
  • 00:26:09.040 --> 00:26:12.100
  • intense doubts about God.
  • 00:26:12.110 --> 00:26:14.130
  • Through that season he discovered it was okay to have
  • 00:26:14.140 --> 00:26:17.040
  • questions, and he was not alone in his doubts and fears.
  • 00:26:17.050 --> 00:26:21.100
  • That experience led him to write a book called "Room for Doubt."
  • 00:26:21.110 --> 00:26:26.120
  • In it he walks through his own season of doubt and shares how
  • 00:26:26.130 --> 00:26:29.290
  • ultimately it led him to a stronger, more profound faith.
  • 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:33.260
  • If you or a friend or family member are struggling with
  • 00:26:33.270 --> 00:26:37.050
  • their faith, I want to encourage you to get a copy of
  • 00:26:37.060 --> 00:26:40.000
  • "Room for Doubt."
  • 00:26:40.010 --> 00:26:42.180
  • male announcer: To get your copy along with Dr. Young's
  • 00:26:42.190 --> 00:26:44.290
  • message on doubt call the number on your screen or go online at
  • 00:26:45.000 --> 00:26:49.110
  • winningwalk.org.
  • 00:26:49.120 --> 00:26:51.280
  • Dr. Young: Before my freshman year at the University of
  • 00:26:56.250 --> 00:26:58.250
  • Alabama, I worked in a tunnel.
  • 00:26:58.260 --> 00:27:01.220
  • In those days I thought I'd be an engineer.
  • 00:27:01.230 --> 00:27:05.080
  • We were boring through an Alabama mountain where a big
  • 00:27:05.090 --> 00:27:09.020
  • water conduit was to be placed.
  • 00:27:09.030 --> 00:27:12.060
  • One contractor bored from the east and the other came in from
  • 00:27:12.070 --> 00:27:15.250
  • the west, and they had to meet, and then we knew they were
  • 00:27:15.260 --> 00:27:20.170
  • getting close, and we were running the lines and the grid
  • 00:27:20.180 --> 00:27:23.210
  • to make sure they'd meet, but we weren't sure, sure, sure.
  • 00:27:23.220 --> 00:27:27.240
  • I remember one morning asking, "Have they broken through yet?"
  • 00:27:27.250 --> 00:27:31.030
  • And then they answered, "Yes, they broke through last night on
  • 00:27:31.040 --> 00:27:36.180
  • the graveyard shift," because they worked that mine 24/7.
  • 00:27:36.190 --> 00:27:41.030
  • They broke through on the graveyard shift.
  • 00:27:41.040 --> 00:27:45.120
  • Years later it hit me.
  • 00:27:45.130 --> 00:27:47.230
  • Jesus worked the graveyard shift at the cross.
  • 00:27:47.240 --> 00:27:52.140
  • He broke through the tunnel of death and defeated death forever
  • 00:27:52.150 --> 00:27:56.240
  • for those who receive him.
  • 00:27:56.250 --> 00:27:59.230
  • We can be confident in our future, knowing that
  • 00:27:59.240 --> 00:28:03.030
  • Jesus Christ will carry us all the way through this life
  • 00:28:03.040 --> 00:28:08.030
  • and then he'll carry us all the way to heaven.
  • 00:28:08.040 --> 00:28:12.070
  • 00:28:14.010 --> 00:28:23.100
