  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Life moves so fast
  • 00:00:01.200 --> 00:00:04.270
  • but is it taking you where you want to go?
  • 00:00:04.280 --> 00:00:09.200
  • You can spend years searching for something you do not have,
  • 00:00:09.210 --> 00:00:13.180
  • only to end up where you don't want to be.
  • 00:00:13.190 --> 00:00:17.120
  • Exploring what the world has to offer,
  • 00:00:17.130 --> 00:00:20.120
  • we often find nothing.
  • 00:00:20.130 --> 00:00:24.020
  • However, your journey
  • 00:00:24.030 --> 00:00:25.120
  • through the twists and turns of this world
  • 00:00:25.130 --> 00:00:27.080
  • doesn't have to put you
  • 00:00:27.090 --> 00:00:28.220
  • on the path of discouragement and despair.
  • 00:00:28.230 --> 00:00:32.280
  • Let me tell you how to take the journey of your lifetime.
  • 00:00:32.290 --> 00:00:35.210
  • It's an adventure with God as your guide
  • 00:00:36.270 --> 00:00:39.130
  • where you'll discover the peace, the purpose,
  • 00:00:39.140 --> 00:00:42.030
  • and the power you've been seeking.
  • 00:00:42.040 --> 00:00:44.120
  • It's a journey of unimaginable blessing
  • 00:00:45.050 --> 00:00:48.170
  • and here is the amazing part.
  • 00:00:48.180 --> 00:00:50.290
  • With God, you already have everything you need
  • 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:53.270
  • for life's journey.
  • 00:00:53.280 --> 00:00:55.240
  • Not half of what you need or a whole lot of what you need.
  • 00:00:55.250 --> 00:00:59.040
  • God has given you everything you need.
  • 00:00:59.050 --> 00:01:03.270
  • God never intended for you to stumble your way
  • 00:01:03.280 --> 00:01:06.080
  • through the course of each day
  • 00:01:06.090 --> 00:01:07.260
  • and certainly not journey unprepared into your future.
  • 00:01:07.270 --> 00:01:12.080
  • So where do you wanna go?
  • 00:01:12.090 --> 00:01:14.160
  • It's time to unpack all that God has given you.
  • 00:01:14.170 --> 00:01:19.090
  • Discover how you have been equipped for this journey
  • 00:01:19.100 --> 00:01:22.150
  • and can live with confidence because you, my friend,
  • 00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:25.280
  • have everything you need.
  • 00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:28.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: If you look at the success
  • 00:01:31.100 --> 00:01:32.260
  • of those who compete in outdoor wilderness sports,
  • 00:01:32.270 --> 00:01:36.200
  • you will find something they all have in common:
  • 00:01:36.210 --> 00:01:39.210
  • they just don't give up.
  • 00:01:39.220 --> 00:01:42.070
  • Whether it's climbing a mountain,
  • 00:01:42.080 --> 00:01:44.020
  • rappelling down the face of a cliff,
  • 00:01:44.030 --> 00:01:46.090
  • or rafting the raging waters of white water rapids,
  • 00:01:46.100 --> 00:01:49.270
  • these athletes demonstrate
  • 00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:51.290
  • a level of resolve and fortitude that is admirable.
  • 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.250
  • Well, I'm David Jeremiah.
  • 00:01:56.260 --> 00:01:58.290
  • Determination is the focus of our teaching today
  • 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:02.140
  • but in 2 Peter 1
  • 00:02:02.150 --> 00:02:04.070
  • the apostle Peter calls it perseverance.
  • 00:02:04.080 --> 00:02:08.110
  • Perseverance moves us forward when the circumstances of life
  • 00:02:08.120 --> 00:02:12.170
  • conspire to hold us back and motivates us
  • 00:02:12.180 --> 00:02:16.050
  • to climb past adversity and pushes us past suffering.
  • 00:02:16.060 --> 00:02:21.160
  • When you develop perseverance,
  • 00:02:21.170 --> 00:02:23.220
  • you are a force to be reckoned with
  • 00:02:23.230 --> 00:02:25.270
  • because you will have a supernatural resolve
  • 00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:29.230
  • to face life's challenges with the strength of God.
  • 00:02:29.240 --> 00:02:34.160
  • Discover that perseverance in today's message entitled,
  • 00:02:34.170 --> 00:02:38.200
  • "Relentless Determination," here on "Turning Point."
  • 00:02:38.210 --> 00:02:43.110
  • So, travel with me across the United States
  • 00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:48.130
  • and join me in New York City, high above Central Park
  • 00:02:48.140 --> 00:02:52.260
  • in The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center
  • 00:02:52.270 --> 00:02:56.060
  • for my series, "Everything You Need."
  • 00:02:56.070 --> 00:02:59.100
  • male announcer: In Dr. Jeremiah's new book,
  • 00:03:03.210 --> 00:03:05.030
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:03:05.040 --> 00:03:06.140
  • he invites you to consider how would your life change
  • 00:03:06.150 --> 00:03:09.040
  • if you had the energy to diligently
  • 00:03:09.050 --> 00:03:11.010
  • fulfill God's purpose for you,
  • 00:03:11.020 --> 00:03:13.190
  • or the confidence to always do what pleases God,
  • 00:03:13.200 --> 00:03:16.160
  • or had an intimate knowledge of his Word.
  • 00:03:16.170 --> 00:03:19.060
  • What would your faith be like if you replaced a harmful habit
  • 00:03:19.070 --> 00:03:21.240
  • with a positive one, or developed a determination
  • 00:03:21.250 --> 00:03:24.170
  • that could carry you through any difficulty?
  • 00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:27.050
  • Do you wanna see yourself becoming more like Christ,
  • 00:03:27.060 --> 00:03:30.050
  • sharing his kindness and love to those around you?
  • 00:03:30.060 --> 00:03:33.010

  • 00:03:33.020 --> 00:03:35.180

  • and cultivate a faith that will change you
  • 00:03:43.190 --> 00:03:45.240

  • And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
  • 00:04:26.260 --> 00:04:30.100
  • "Relentless Determination."
  • 00:04:30.110 --> 00:04:32.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Back in 1983, the Australian Ultra Marathon
  • 00:04:34.070 --> 00:04:38.170
  • was a foot race of 544 grueling miles
  • 00:04:38.180 --> 00:04:43.050
  • from Sydney to Melbourne and, at this particular race,
  • 00:04:43.060 --> 00:04:47.180
  • a very odd competitor showed up.
  • 00:04:47.190 --> 00:04:50.060
  • Everyone else was highly trained,
  • 00:04:50.070 --> 00:04:52.000
  • commercially sponsored, professional,
  • 00:04:52.010 --> 00:04:54.140
  • but this particular participant, a guy named Cliff Young,
  • 00:04:54.150 --> 00:04:58.050
  • was a 61-year-old farmer.
  • 00:04:58.060 --> 00:05:02.050
  • Unlike the others who were clad in professional running shoes
  • 00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:05.070
  • and cool athletic wear with sponsored logos,
  • 00:05:05.080 --> 00:05:09.200
  • Cliff wore a loose white shirt flopping over baggy overalls.
  • 00:05:09.210 --> 00:05:14.150
  • He had rubber galoshes over his boots
  • 00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:17.150
  • and a white baseball cap
  • 00:05:17.160 --> 00:05:19.050
  • hung over his head with sunscreens.
  • 00:05:19.060 --> 00:05:23.160
  • Well, the officials thought it was a joke.
  • 00:05:23.170 --> 00:05:25.160
  • They began to laugh and they were being set up by this guy
  • 00:05:25.170 --> 00:05:29.050
  • but Cliff was dead serious and he was ready to run.
  • 00:05:29.060 --> 00:05:33.000
  • His name went down on the roster,
  • 00:05:33.010 --> 00:05:34.200
  • someone pinned a number on his faded overalls,
  • 00:05:34.210 --> 00:05:37.180
  • and uncertainty about Cliff continued
  • 00:05:37.190 --> 00:05:39.140
  • as the runners lined up to start the race.
  • 00:05:39.150 --> 00:05:42.130
  • Was this old man really gonna compete
  • 00:05:42.140 --> 00:05:44.110
  • against young, highly trained athletes
  • 00:05:44.120 --> 00:05:46.120
  • with sculpted bodies?
  • 00:05:46.130 --> 00:05:48.070
  • Some still thought it was a joke.
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:49.190
  • Others, they weren't too sure what to make of it.
  • 00:05:49.200 --> 00:05:52.020
  • They thought maybe he was just a little deranged
  • 00:05:52.030 --> 00:05:55.020
  • or starting in the early stages of Alzheimer's,
  • 00:05:55.030 --> 00:05:58.030
  • and they shouted insults and some of them made fun.
  • 00:05:58.040 --> 00:06:02.060
  • When the starting gun fired, the runners took off,
  • 00:06:02.070 --> 00:06:04.130
  • the crowd laughed at the contrast
  • 00:06:04.140 --> 00:06:06.020
  • between the young contestants
  • 00:06:06.030 --> 00:06:07.220
  • who had these disciplined strides
  • 00:06:07.230 --> 00:06:09.160
  • and Cliff's odd-gaited shuffle.
  • 00:06:09.170 --> 00:06:12.100
  • Well, 5 days later, 14 hours, and 4 minutes later,
  • 00:06:12.110 --> 00:06:16.080
  • no one was laughing.
  • 00:06:16.090 --> 00:06:18.110
  • Cliff Young crossed the Melbourne finish line
  • 00:06:18.120 --> 00:06:21.130
  • almost ten hours ahead of the second-place runner.
  • 00:06:21.140 --> 00:06:26.070
  • The astounded press descended on him en masse.
  • 00:06:26.080 --> 00:06:29.120
  • How did this aging farmer
  • 00:06:29.130 --> 00:06:31.070
  • accomplish such a spectacular run?
  • 00:06:31.080 --> 00:06:35.180
  • Two things emerged when they did the research:
  • 00:06:35.190 --> 00:06:37.250
  • first, he was a shepherd who was too poor to own a horse
  • 00:06:37.260 --> 00:06:41.050
  • so he often herded entire flocks of sheep alone,
  • 00:06:41.060 --> 00:06:44.180
  • running day and night; and secondly,
  • 00:06:44.190 --> 00:06:47.290
  • he didn't realize that runners in the Ultra Marathons
  • 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.280
  • stopped at night to sleep
  • 00:06:50.290 --> 00:06:52.210
  • so he ran the entire distance without sleeping.
  • 00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:59.190
  • He had perseverance.
  • 00:06:59.200 --> 00:07:02.130
  • He just kept on going and when his competitors
  • 00:07:02.140 --> 00:07:05.000
  • eased their ordeal with rest,
  • 00:07:05.010 --> 00:07:07.140
  • he just pushed through his exhaustion.
  • 00:07:07.150 --> 00:07:09.250
  • His eyes were on the goal and nothing mattered.
  • 00:07:09.260 --> 00:07:12.170
  • He ran all the way from the beginning to the end.
  • 00:07:12.180 --> 00:07:16.140
  • That quality of perseverance is in short supply these days,
  • 00:07:17.190 --> 00:07:22.070
  • have you noticed?
  • 00:07:22.080 --> 00:07:23.230
  • Did you know that the average lifespan of a pastor
  • 00:07:23.240 --> 00:07:26.140
  • going to an individual church
  • 00:07:26.150 --> 00:07:27.280
  • in today's culture's less than two years?
  • 00:07:27.290 --> 00:07:30.130
  • You know what happens is they go to a church,
  • 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:33.050
  • they run into their first little issue,
  • 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:34.260
  • and they pack up their stuff
  • 00:07:34.270 --> 00:07:36.170
  • and the sermons they prepared for that church,
  • 00:07:36.180 --> 00:07:38.210
  • they go and give 'em to the next church.
  • 00:07:38.220 --> 00:07:40.080
  • And that's what happens and, of course,
  • 00:07:40.090 --> 00:07:42.040
  • it's impossible to build anything like that.
  • 00:07:42.050 --> 00:07:44.040
  • It's impossible to make much of an impact
  • 00:07:44.050 --> 00:07:46.010
  • if that's what you do.
  • 00:07:46.020 --> 00:07:47.120
  • Well, the apostle Peter
  • 00:07:47.260 --> 00:07:49.050
  • has given us this list of qualities
  • 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:51.030
  • that we're supposed to develop in our lives.
  • 00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:53.240
  • God has given us everything we need
  • 00:07:53.250 --> 00:07:56.200
  • for life in godliness.
  • 00:07:56.210 --> 00:07:58.100
  • He's given us his power, he's given his provision,
  • 00:07:58.230 --> 00:08:02.120
  • and all of this comes to us
  • 00:08:02.130 --> 00:08:03.280
  • through the promises of God's Word,
  • 00:08:03.290 --> 00:08:06.090
  • these great and exceedingly precious promises of the Bible.
  • 00:08:06.100 --> 00:08:10.210
  • Then Peter tells us,
  • 00:08:10.220 --> 00:08:12.090
  • "Once you have these wonderful blessings from God,
  • 00:08:12.100 --> 00:08:15.150
  • these gifts that he gives you,
  • 00:08:15.160 --> 00:08:17.110
  • it's your responsibility to develop them."
  • 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:20.000
  • You're to take the gifts that God gives you,
  • 00:08:20.010 --> 00:08:22.100
  • don't sit on them, don't admire them,
  • 00:08:22.110 --> 00:08:24.270
  • take them and develop them in your life.
  • 00:08:24.280 --> 00:08:27.090
  • And he gives us the list of the gifts.
  • 00:08:27.100 --> 00:08:29.030
  • He says, "Add to your faith, virtue.
  • 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:32.260
  • And to your virtue, knowledge.
  • 00:08:32.270 --> 00:08:36.090
  • And to your knowledge, self-control.
  • 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:39.200
  • And to your self-control, add perseverance."
  • 00:08:39.210 --> 00:08:45.040
  • The word "perseverance" is a really interesting word.
  • 00:08:45.050 --> 00:08:48.210
  • It means to bear up under something
  • 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:50.200
  • but the word itself is the key to its understanding.
  • 00:08:50.210 --> 00:08:55.030
  • The word "per" means through and the word "severe,"
  • 00:08:55.040 --> 00:08:58.000
  • we know what that is.
  • 00:08:58.010 --> 00:08:59.100
  • So to persevere is to go through something severe,
  • 00:08:59.110 --> 00:09:02.220
  • and everybody knows that there are some things like that
  • 00:09:02.230 --> 00:09:05.060
  • in every one of our lives.
  • 00:09:05.070 --> 00:09:06.240
  • We all have stuff we have to go through.
  • 00:09:06.250 --> 00:09:08.120
  • Isn't that right?
  • 00:09:08.130 --> 00:09:10.020
  • Perseverance is what God uses in our lives
  • 00:09:10.030 --> 00:09:13.080
  • to turn our ordeals into opportunities.
  • 00:09:13.090 --> 00:09:17.020
  • Perseverance isn't something,
  • 00:09:17.030 --> 00:09:18.180
  • 'Well, I just guess I'll get through it completely.'
  • 00:09:18.190 --> 00:09:21.100
  • Perseverance is getting through it
  • 00:09:21.110 --> 00:09:22.220
  • with your hands up high in victory,
  • 00:09:22.230 --> 00:09:24.190
  • all the way through to the edge," amen?
  • 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:26.270
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:09:27.160 --> 00:09:29.220
  • So let's begin talking about the force of persevering.
  • 00:09:30.100 --> 00:09:34.210
  • Back in Luke chapter 8, Jesus told a parable
  • 00:09:34.220 --> 00:09:37.230
  • about four different kinds of soil.
  • 00:09:37.240 --> 00:09:40.190
  • This soil had seed sown into it by a sower.
  • 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:45.000
  • "Some of the seed," Jesus said,
  • 00:09:45.010 --> 00:09:46.250
  • "fell on good ground and it germinated."
  • 00:09:46.260 --> 00:09:49.230
  • Jesus was actually, of course, speaking about our heart.
  • 00:09:49.240 --> 00:09:53.150
  • Someone who embraced the gospel, somebody who heard the message.
  • 00:09:53.160 --> 00:09:56.070
  • The seed of God's Word fall on the heart.
  • 00:09:56.080 --> 00:09:58.280
  • Notice the way he put it.
  • 00:09:58.290 --> 00:10:00.160
  • He said: "The good soil stands for those
  • 00:10:00.170 --> 00:10:03.200
  • with noble and good hearts, who hear the word, retain it,
  • 00:10:03.210 --> 00:10:08.090
  • and by persevering they produce a crop."
  • 00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:11.230
  • Perseverance has always been a part
  • 00:10:11.240 --> 00:10:13.280
  • of God's plan for our lives.
  • 00:10:13.290 --> 00:10:16.030
  • He wants to teach us not to be quitters,
  • 00:10:16.040 --> 00:10:18.190
  • not to be people who walk away when things get tough.
  • 00:10:18.200 --> 00:10:21.200
  • It's in the process of perseverance
  • 00:10:21.210 --> 00:10:23.260
  • that we build our spiritual muscles.
  • 00:10:23.270 --> 00:10:27.030
  • Byron Janis, a world-class concert pianist,
  • 00:10:27.040 --> 00:10:31.160
  • played with the world's top orchestras
  • 00:10:31.170 --> 00:10:33.100
  • and he recorded many albums.
  • 00:10:33.110 --> 00:10:35.080
  • It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that he played
  • 00:10:35.090 --> 00:10:37.180
  • in this facility here at one time.
  • 00:10:37.190 --> 00:10:40.200
  • From early childhood, he studied with top teachers,
  • 00:10:40.210 --> 00:10:43.280
  • he practiced for many hours every day.
  • 00:10:43.290 --> 00:10:47.120
  • Whenever he would play,
  • 00:10:47.130 --> 00:10:48.230
  • audiences would just marvel at the grace and the nimbleness
  • 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:51.180
  • of his fingers as they flew across the keyboard,
  • 00:10:51.190 --> 00:10:54.100
  • bringing to life the classical repertoire's
  • 00:10:54.110 --> 00:10:56.200
  • most difficult pieces.
  • 00:10:56.210 --> 00:10:59.120
  • Back in 1975, at the peak of his career,
  • 00:10:59.130 --> 00:11:03.120
  • Janis noticed a creeping stiffness in his fingers.
  • 00:11:03.130 --> 00:11:07.110
  • After several tests,
  • 00:11:07.120 --> 00:11:08.260
  • doctors gave him the devastating diagnosis.
  • 00:11:08.270 --> 00:11:12.020
  • He had severe psoriatic arthritis
  • 00:11:12.030 --> 00:11:16.020
  • in both his hands and his wrists.
  • 00:11:16.030 --> 00:11:19.020
  • The prognosis was bleak.
  • 00:11:19.030 --> 00:11:20.270
  • His fingers would become stiff as wood
  • 00:11:20.280 --> 00:11:23.150
  • and he would become severely crippled.
  • 00:11:23.160 --> 00:11:27.010
  • When the arthritis fused joints in nine of his fingers,
  • 00:11:27.020 --> 00:11:30.020
  • it appeared his concert career was over.
  • 00:11:30.030 --> 00:11:33.110
  • But Byron Janis was determined to challenge this.
  • 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:37.240
  • Without revealing his disease to the public,
  • 00:11:37.250 --> 00:11:40.110
  • he spent long hours
  • 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:42.070
  • adapting his playing technique to his new reality.
  • 00:11:42.080 --> 00:11:46.200
  • He relied on regular medication, acupuncture, ultrasound,
  • 00:11:46.210 --> 00:11:50.200
  • even tried hypnosis to cope with the pain.
  • 00:11:50.210 --> 00:11:53.140
  • His wife, Maria, who was--
  • 00:11:53.150 --> 00:11:56.010
  • who is the daughter of actor Gary Cooper,
  • 00:11:56.020 --> 00:11:58.280
  • she learned and applied a therapeutic massage technique
  • 00:11:58.290 --> 00:12:02.130
  • to restore flexibility to his joints.
  • 00:12:02.140 --> 00:12:05.160
  • Now, watch what happened.
  • 00:12:05.170 --> 00:12:06.290
  • Janis continued playing the piano for 12 more years.
  • 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:11.170
  • Despite several more surgeries on his hands,
  • 00:12:11.180 --> 00:12:14.100
  • he continued to play the piano
  • 00:12:14.110 --> 00:12:16.040
  • and became an active fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation.
  • 00:12:16.050 --> 00:12:19.250
  • He credits faith, hope, and perseverance for his success
  • 00:12:19.260 --> 00:12:23.220
  • in overcoming his severe trial.
  • 00:12:23.230 --> 00:12:25.250
  • As he put it, "I have arthritis but arthritis doesn't have me."
  • 00:12:25.260 --> 00:12:30.220
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:12:31.160 --> 00:12:34.130
  • Now, as you know, in this world,
  • 00:12:34.140 --> 00:12:35.290
  • we've got a lot of challenges and sufferings
  • 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:38.010
  • and let me see if you agree with me.
  • 00:12:38.020 --> 00:12:39.250
  • They don't all go away when we become Christians.
  • 00:12:39.260 --> 00:12:42.250
  • The good news is that perseverance
  • 00:12:42.260 --> 00:12:44.170
  • can transform our curses into blessings.
  • 00:12:44.180 --> 00:12:48.070
  • Let me tell you some things that happen when you persevere.
  • 00:12:48.080 --> 00:12:50.100
  • First of all, perseverance produces trust.
  • 00:12:50.110 --> 00:12:54.220
  • It teaches you to believe.
  • 00:12:54.230 --> 00:12:57.040
  • Probably the best illustration of this is in the Old Testament.
  • 00:12:57.050 --> 00:13:01.130
  • We all know history's best-known sufferer.
  • 00:13:01.140 --> 00:13:05.050
  • His name was Job.
  • 00:13:05.060 --> 00:13:08.170
  • And for much of his life, Job was an exemplary,
  • 00:13:08.180 --> 00:13:11.010
  • godly man with extravagant wealth and a huge family.
  • 00:13:11.020 --> 00:13:15.220
  • One day, this has to be the worst day
  • 00:13:15.230 --> 00:13:17.290
  • anybody ever had in their life, one day everything changed.
  • 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:22.010
  • Satan targeted Job for an attack
  • 00:13:22.020 --> 00:13:24.110
  • and in a series of mind-numbing disasters,
  • 00:13:24.120 --> 00:13:27.080
  • all in a single day, Satan destroyed his wealth,
  • 00:13:27.090 --> 00:13:31.040
  • took away his servants, and killed all of his children.
  • 00:13:31.050 --> 00:13:34.100
  • All in one day.
  • 00:13:34.110 --> 00:13:36.170
  • Then the devil struck Job with a painful and disfiguring disease
  • 00:13:36.180 --> 00:13:40.130
  • and Job was reduced to groveling in the ashes
  • 00:13:40.140 --> 00:13:42.220
  • and the Bible says this.
  • 00:13:42.230 --> 00:13:44.110
  • This is gross.
  • 00:13:44.120 --> 00:13:45.210
  • "Scraping his sores with a pottery shard."
  • 00:13:45.220 --> 00:13:49.090
  • His friends came to analyze his problems
  • 00:13:49.100 --> 00:13:51.240
  • and they did more harm than good.
  • 00:13:51.250 --> 00:13:55.090
  • But Job never gave up. He maintained his trust in God.
  • 00:13:55.100 --> 00:14:00.030
  • He showed up at the end of the book
  • 00:14:00.040 --> 00:14:02.000
  • on a whirlwind and restored Job
  • 00:14:02.010 --> 00:14:04.190
  • to a place of unparalleled blessing.
  • 00:14:04.200 --> 00:14:07.130
  • And the Bible says that
  • 00:14:07.140 --> 00:14:09.010
  • "the Lord blessed the latter days of Job
  • 00:14:09.020 --> 00:14:12.070
  • more than he blessed the beginning days."
  • 00:14:12.080 --> 00:14:15.230
  • Job learned that God,
  • 00:14:15.240 --> 00:14:17.140
  • who is big enough to control all the facets of the universe,
  • 00:14:17.150 --> 00:14:20.180
  • is able to direct the paths of his people.
  • 00:14:20.190 --> 00:14:23.010
  • And Job confessed at the end of his story, he said,
  • 00:14:23.020 --> 00:14:26.030
  • "God, I know that you can do everything,
  • 00:14:26.040 --> 00:14:28.110
  • and that no purpose of yours can be withheld from you."
  • 00:14:28.120 --> 00:14:32.000
  • He learned to trust God
  • 00:14:32.010 --> 00:14:33.170
  • even in the midst of a difficult time in his life
  • 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:36.050
  • and the fact that God rewarded him
  • 00:14:36.060 --> 00:14:38.210
  • for his perseverance
  • 00:14:38.220 --> 00:14:40.010
  • was just a little more icing on the cake.
  • 00:14:40.020 --> 00:14:43.020
  • Job learned to trust God. How do we learn to trust God?
  • 00:14:43.030 --> 00:14:47.000
  • Can you learn to trust God in times of prosperity?
  • 00:14:47.010 --> 00:14:50.150
  • I guess you can but it's not easy.
  • 00:14:50.160 --> 00:14:53.020
  • Because in times of prosperity
  • 00:14:53.030 --> 00:14:54.160
  • you usually think it's because of you, right?
  • 00:14:54.170 --> 00:14:57.170
  • "I'm doing so good, I'm so great.
  • 00:14:57.180 --> 00:14:59.080
  • Look at all that I've done."
  • 00:14:59.090 --> 00:15:01.000
  • But when you go through times of difficulty
  • 00:15:01.010 --> 00:15:04.190
  • and there's nobody left to blame it on,
  • 00:15:04.200 --> 00:15:07.180
  • and all of a sudden you realize
  • 00:15:07.190 --> 00:15:09.050
  • that God is still with you and he's helped you,
  • 00:15:09.060 --> 00:15:11.280
  • you come out of that and you know
  • 00:15:11.290 --> 00:15:14.070
  • that the God you serve
  • 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:16.000
  • is a God who is worthy of your trust, amen?
  • 00:15:16.010 --> 00:15:20.020
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:15:20.190 --> 00:15:23.110
  • Perseverance produces trust. Got it?
  • 00:15:23.120 --> 00:15:28.040
  • Number two: perseverance produces transformation.
  • 00:15:28.050 --> 00:15:33.060
  • Romans 5:3-4 tells us to rejoice in our sufferings.
  • 00:15:33.070 --> 00:15:37.050
  • Listen to this.
  • 00:15:37.060 --> 00:15:39.080
  • Because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
  • 00:15:39.090 --> 00:15:44.010
  • and perseverance, character; and character, hope."
  • 00:15:44.020 --> 00:15:49.020
  • In the book of James we read these words:
  • 00:15:49.030 --> 00:15:52.110
  • "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,
  • 00:15:52.120 --> 00:15:56.180
  • whenever you face trials of any kind,
  • 00:15:56.190 --> 00:15:59.240
  • because you know the testing of your faith
  • 00:15:59.250 --> 00:16:02.260
  • produces perseverance.
  • 00:16:02.270 --> 00:16:05.230
  • Let perseverance finish its work
  • 00:16:05.240 --> 00:16:07.280
  • so that you may be mature and complete,
  • 00:16:07.290 --> 00:16:10.020
  • not lacking anything."
  • 00:16:10.030 --> 00:16:12.110
  • The Bible teaches us in these two key passages
  • 00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:15.260
  • that the way that you learn perseverance
  • 00:16:15.270 --> 00:16:18.050
  • is through suffering and trial and difficulty.
  • 00:16:18.060 --> 00:16:21.280
  • So when we maintain our trust in God
  • 00:16:21.290 --> 00:16:24.030
  • in spite of difficulty or disaster,
  • 00:16:24.040 --> 00:16:26.150
  • when we don't throw in the towel when it gets tough,
  • 00:16:26.160 --> 00:16:29.140
  • what we do when we do that
  • 00:16:29.150 --> 00:16:31.170
  • produces a strength of conviction
  • 00:16:31.180 --> 00:16:34.080
  • and Paul sums it up in Romans 5 as character and maturity.
  • 00:16:34.090 --> 00:16:39.200
  • So when you're going through stuff,
  • 00:16:39.210 --> 00:16:41.150
  • maybe you shouldn't always use the "why" question.
  • 00:16:41.160 --> 00:16:45.050
  • Maybe you should ask the "what" question.
  • 00:16:45.060 --> 00:16:47.220
  • "Lord, what are you trying to teach me during this time?
  • 00:16:47.230 --> 00:16:50.240
  • What do I need to learn
  • 00:16:50.250 --> 00:16:52.040
  • that I can't learn in any other time?"
  • 00:16:52.050 --> 00:16:55.070
  • Learn to persevere. Learn to keep going.
  • 00:16:55.080 --> 00:16:58.180
  • Don't quit. When it's tough, don't give up.
  • 00:16:58.190 --> 00:17:02.110
  • Because if you do, you will live to regret it
  • 00:17:02.120 --> 00:17:06.000
  • and it will make it much more difficult
  • 00:17:06.010 --> 00:17:07.240
  • the next time you face trouble to stay the course.
  • 00:17:07.250 --> 00:17:11.230
  • That's the force of persevering.
  • 00:17:11.240 --> 00:17:14.030
  • So now let me talk to you for a moment
  • 00:17:14.040 --> 00:17:15.220
  • about the formula of it.
  • 00:17:15.230 --> 00:17:17.240
  • God knows we need trials to form character,
  • 00:17:17.250 --> 00:17:20.240
  • just like athletes need resistance
  • 00:17:20.250 --> 00:17:22.240
  • to tone their muscles.
  • 00:17:22.250 --> 00:17:24.110
  • In God's pursuit of us,
  • 00:17:24.120 --> 00:17:25.280
  • he will not leave us in our comfort zone
  • 00:17:25.290 --> 00:17:28.190
  • when our spiritual muscles will atrophy from the lack of use.
  • 00:17:28.200 --> 00:17:32.290
  • He exposes us to things that strengthen our faith.
  • 00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:36.270
  • He exposes us to things that humble our hearts.
  • 00:17:36.280 --> 00:17:40.200
  • He exposes us to things that refine our character.
  • 00:17:40.210 --> 00:17:43.190
  • That's why Paul urged Timothy to "pursue righteousness
  • 00:17:44.080 --> 00:17:47.100
  • and a godly life, along with faith,
  • 00:17:47.110 --> 00:17:49.260
  • love, perseverance, and gentleness."
  • 00:17:49.270 --> 00:17:52.070
  • So how do you pursue perseverance?
  • 00:17:52.080 --> 00:17:54.150
  • First of all, put your problems in perspective.
  • 00:17:55.030 --> 00:17:58.120
  • Listen to what he said in 2 Corinthians 4.
  • 00:17:58.130 --> 00:18:00.250
  • He said, "We do not lose heart.
  • 00:18:00.260 --> 00:18:03.050
  • Even though our outward man is perishing,
  • 00:18:03.060 --> 00:18:05.290
  • the inward man is being renewed every day.
  • 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:08.290
  • For our light affliction,"
  • 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:10.190
  • he calls our problems light affliction,
  • 00:18:10.200 --> 00:18:13.080
  • "which is but for a moment,
  • 00:18:13.090 --> 00:18:14.290
  • is working for us a far more exceeding
  • 00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:18.020
  • and eternal weight of glory."
  • 00:18:18.030 --> 00:18:21.160
  • When you weigh the outcome
  • 00:18:21.170 --> 00:18:23.050
  • against the cost of your perseverance,
  • 00:18:23.060 --> 00:18:25.280
  • not only does perseverance become your first response,
  • 00:18:25.290 --> 00:18:29.090
  • it comes to you more easily.
  • 00:18:29.100 --> 00:18:31.190
  • You realize, "Yes, I'm going through some stuff right now
  • 00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:35.060
  • but in light of what God has planned for me for eternity,
  • 00:18:35.070 --> 00:18:39.180
  • this ain't nothing.
  • 00:18:39.190 --> 00:18:42.020
  • This ain't nothing."
  • 00:18:42.030 --> 00:18:44.120
  • Put your problems in perspective and just tackle today.
  • 00:18:44.130 --> 00:18:49.230
  • In light of that, your job is to keep putting
  • 00:18:49.240 --> 00:18:51.220
  • one foot in front of another.
  • 00:18:51.230 --> 00:18:53.200
  • Tackle one step at a time.
  • 00:18:53.210 --> 00:18:55.270
  • In other words, you can't make any progress
  • 00:18:56.160 --> 00:18:58.090
  • unless you go forward one step at a time,
  • 00:18:58.100 --> 00:19:01.250
  • but every single step is a step toward ultimate victory.
  • 00:19:01.260 --> 00:19:05.240
  • You don't have to conquer your whole problem at once.
  • 00:19:05.250 --> 00:19:07.270
  • You don't need to accomplish your life's work in one day.
  • 00:19:07.280 --> 00:19:10.100
  • God's plan is step by step
  • 00:19:10.110 --> 00:19:12.060
  • and we have to take life day by day.
  • 00:19:12.070 --> 00:19:14.190
  • Ask God to give you the grace for today.
  • 00:19:14.200 --> 00:19:17.160
  • In the morning, tell him you don't know
  • 00:19:17.170 --> 00:19:19.120
  • if you can make it all the way
  • 00:19:19.130 --> 00:19:20.220
  • but you're gonna trust him for today.
  • 00:19:20.230 --> 00:19:22.170
  • And try not to think about what happened yesterday
  • 00:19:22.180 --> 00:19:24.220
  • and don't get down the road too far tomorrow.
  • 00:19:24.230 --> 00:19:27.020
  • Learn to live in day-tight compartments.
  • 00:19:27.030 --> 00:19:30.200
  • That's how perseverance functions best:
  • 00:19:30.210 --> 00:19:33.190
  • if you just take it one day at a time.
  • 00:19:33.200 --> 00:19:36.170
  • Just tackle today.
  • 00:19:36.180 --> 00:19:39.010
  • Surround yourself with encouragers.
  • 00:19:39.020 --> 00:19:42.200
  • As Christians, we need each other,
  • 00:19:42.210 --> 00:19:44.070
  • and God has so wonderfully provided for us,
  • 00:19:44.080 --> 00:19:47.030
  • first of all, in the family and then in the larger family,
  • 00:19:47.040 --> 00:19:50.280
  • which is the body of Christ.
  • 00:19:50.290 --> 00:19:53.040
  • Let me warn you that when you're going through times
  • 00:19:53.050 --> 00:19:55.100
  • when you need to persevere,
  • 00:19:55.110 --> 00:19:57.050
  • you may have to sort out some of your friends.
  • 00:19:57.060 --> 00:20:00.140
  • Some people just really don't know
  • 00:20:00.150 --> 00:20:01.240
  • how to deliver a positive message.
  • 00:20:01.250 --> 00:20:03.150
  • Have you noticed that?
  • 00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:04.250
  • They just don't--they've never learned how to do that.
  • 00:20:04.260 --> 00:20:06.170
  • Even in trying to deliver a positive message,
  • 00:20:06.180 --> 00:20:09.060
  • they end up messing it all up at the end.
  • 00:20:09.070 --> 00:20:11.020
  • Have you noticed that?
  • 00:20:11.030 --> 00:20:12.150
  • When you're going through something
  • 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:13.250
  • and you need to persevere, get people to help you.
  • 00:20:13.260 --> 00:20:16.280
  • And you know what?
  • 00:20:16.290 --> 00:20:18.080
  • The people that really love you are just looking for a way
  • 00:20:18.090 --> 00:20:21.150
  • to encourage you and strengthen you
  • 00:20:21.160 --> 00:20:23.130
  • when you're going through a tough thing.
  • 00:20:23.140 --> 00:20:26.000
  • Here's number four: know when to take a break.
  • 00:20:26.010 --> 00:20:30.010
  • Know when to take a break. Jesus is a good example.
  • 00:20:30.020 --> 00:20:33.130
  • He took periods of rest during his mission on earth.
  • 00:20:33.140 --> 00:20:36.010
  • You study his life.
  • 00:20:36.020 --> 00:20:37.220
  • He rested on the seventh day after creating the world.
  • 00:20:37.230 --> 00:20:40.280
  • To rest is one of his commandments,
  • 00:20:40.290 --> 00:20:42.210
  • did you know that?
  • 00:20:42.220 --> 00:20:44.010
  • "Six days you shall do your work,
  • 00:20:44.020 --> 00:20:45.110
  • and on the seventh day you shall rest."
  • 00:20:45.120 --> 00:20:47.270
  • Rest is not a lapse in perseverance.
  • 00:20:47.280 --> 00:20:50.240
  • Rest is stopping to take stock, reorganize, regroup,
  • 00:20:50.250 --> 00:20:55.100
  • turns your conscious mind off and enables you to refocus
  • 00:20:55.110 --> 00:20:58.080
  • and see the problem from a new angle.
  • 00:20:58.090 --> 00:21:01.020
  • I love what David said in Psalm 3.
  • 00:21:01.030 --> 00:21:03.180
  • He said: "I lay down and slept;
  • 00:21:03.190 --> 00:21:05.250
  • I awoke, for the Lord sustained me.
  • 00:21:05.260 --> 00:21:08.140
  • I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
  • 00:21:08.150 --> 00:21:11.040
  • who have set themselves against me all around."
  • 00:21:11.050 --> 00:21:14.220
  • Despite enemies assailing him, David rested, unafraid,
  • 00:21:14.230 --> 00:21:18.070
  • knowing that God was his strength
  • 00:21:18.080 --> 00:21:20.040
  • and his protection.
  • 00:21:20.050 --> 00:21:22.080
  • Here's the fifth thing:
  • 00:21:22.090 --> 00:21:24.040
  • cultivate positivity along the way.
  • 00:21:24.050 --> 00:21:28.090
  • Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation;
  • 00:21:28.100 --> 00:21:31.290
  • but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
  • 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:36.130
  • And as believers,
  • 00:21:36.140 --> 00:21:38.220
  • we ought to be people who are positive.
  • 00:21:38.230 --> 00:21:41.240
  • I mean, sometimes, you gotta be negative
  • 00:21:41.250 --> 00:21:43.250
  • because negativity's a part of life.
  • 00:21:43.260 --> 00:21:46.160
  • But listen to me,
  • 00:21:46.170 --> 00:21:47.260
  • you don't have to try to be negative.
  • 00:21:47.270 --> 00:21:49.210
  • That comes naturally.
  • 00:21:49.220 --> 00:21:52.070
  • You have to really work hard to be positive sometimes.
  • 00:21:52.080 --> 00:21:55.000
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:21:55.010 --> 00:21:57.030
  • Our minds are so wired that when something happens
  • 00:21:57.040 --> 00:21:59.170
  • we're more apt to take the negative attitude about it
  • 00:21:59.180 --> 00:22:02.270
  • but we need to cycle back and say,
  • 00:22:02.280 --> 00:22:05.060
  • "If we believe God is good," and we do,
  • 00:22:05.070 --> 00:22:07.290
  • "God has something in store for us
  • 00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:10.030
  • if we'll just take stock of it."
  • 00:22:10.040 --> 00:22:12.080
  • Then let me just add this last thought:
  • 00:22:12.090 --> 00:22:15.070
  • refuse to quit.
  • 00:22:15.080 --> 00:22:17.090
  • That's what perseverance is. Don't quit.
  • 00:22:17.100 --> 00:22:20.180
  • What if the theme of your life is,
  • 00:22:20.190 --> 00:22:23.160
  • "I don't care what happens, I'm not quitting"?
  • 00:22:23.170 --> 00:22:26.120
  • Over and over in the book of Hebrews,
  • 00:22:26.130 --> 00:22:28.120
  • there's this little phrase: "Let us go on."
  • 00:22:28.130 --> 00:22:31.240
  • Let us go on. Let's keep going.
  • 00:22:31.250 --> 00:22:33.290
  • Let's keep doing what God has called us to do.
  • 00:22:34.000 --> 00:22:36.290
  • And if we do that, we will persevere.
  • 00:22:37.000 --> 00:22:40.200
  • One of the most inspiring things we can do, men and women,
  • 00:22:40.210 --> 00:22:43.150
  • is to learn how to be perseverers.
  • 00:22:43.160 --> 00:22:47.060
  • Learn how to stay the course and to say,
  • 00:22:47.070 --> 00:22:51.140
  • "I'm never gonna quit, no matter what."
  • 00:22:51.150 --> 00:22:53.290
  • If we'd just get a few more people
  • 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:55.220
  • to persevere in our culture
  • 00:22:55.230 --> 00:22:57.200
  • for the things that are good and godly and right,
  • 00:22:57.210 --> 00:22:59.220
  • we could turn this world upside down.
  • 00:22:59.230 --> 00:23:02.110
  • It seems like--it seems like, to me,
  • 00:23:02.120 --> 00:23:04.040
  • just when some people are getting their knowledge,
  • 00:23:04.050 --> 00:23:06.290
  • just when they know what to do,
  • 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:08.140
  • just when they're ready to make a difference, they quit.
  • 00:23:08.150 --> 00:23:13.100
  • I don't find any place in the Bible says:
  • 00:23:13.110 --> 00:23:15.010
  • "When you get to be 62 you gotta quit."
  • 00:23:15.020 --> 00:23:18.230
  • It isn't in the Bible. And here's the problem.
  • 00:23:18.240 --> 00:23:22.010
  • By the time you get 62, you've learned most of the stuff
  • 00:23:22.020 --> 00:23:24.240
  • you need to learn to be successful
  • 00:23:24.250 --> 00:23:27.000
  • so why would you quit then?
  • 00:23:27.010 --> 00:23:29.120
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:23:29.130 --> 00:23:32.230
  • And I know this is sometimes hard for my wife to hear,
  • 00:23:32.240 --> 00:23:37.090
  • but I'll tell you what,
  • 00:23:37.100 --> 00:23:38.190
  • she's so supportive and such a blessing to me,
  • 00:23:38.200 --> 00:23:41.020
  • we're so blessed as a couple to do what we love to do.
  • 00:23:41.030 --> 00:23:43.130
  • You know, the Bible says there's only two things eternal.
  • 00:23:43.140 --> 00:23:46.140
  • One is the soul of a man or a woman
  • 00:23:46.150 --> 00:23:48.160
  • and the other is the Word of God.
  • 00:23:48.170 --> 00:23:50.160
  • And every day of my life,
  • 00:23:50.170 --> 00:23:51.260
  • I get to get up in the morning and concentrate
  • 00:23:51.270 --> 00:23:54.190
  • on the only two things that are gonna be here forever:
  • 00:23:54.200 --> 00:23:58.090
  • God's Word and God's people.
  • 00:23:58.100 --> 00:24:01.170
  • And what a blessing that is, amen?
  • 00:24:01.180 --> 00:24:03.230
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:24:03.240 --> 00:24:05.120
  • Amen.
  • 00:24:05.130 --> 00:24:06.270
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return in a moment
  • 00:24:07.240 --> 00:24:09.290
  • with one more inspirational word right after this.

  • male announcer: Today, Dr. Jeremiah

  • the power of God's promises in our lives.
  • 00:24:18.210 --> 00:24:22.020

  • female announcer: And now, with one last word
  • 00:24:56.030 --> 00:24:57.230
  • for today's program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:24:57.240 --> 00:25:00.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Never forget the key to persevering
  • 00:25:02.030 --> 00:25:04.080
  • over our problems
  • 00:25:04.090 --> 00:25:05.240
  • begins by placing them in perspective of eternity.
  • 00:25:05.250 --> 00:25:10.120
  • I mean, it's difficult seeing past a mountain on our path
  • 00:25:10.130 --> 00:25:14.010
  • when it's right in front of us.
  • 00:25:14.020 --> 00:25:16.170
  • But remember that at the end of our journey,
  • 00:25:16.180 --> 00:25:19.200
  • we'll look back and realize many of today's problems
  • 00:25:19.210 --> 00:25:23.000
  • were just--well, they were just small speed bumps
  • 00:25:23.010 --> 00:25:26.130
  • when compared to an eternity with Jesus Christ.
  • 00:25:26.140 --> 00:25:30.170
  • If you want to know more about how to reach
  • 00:25:30.180 --> 00:25:32.210
