  • 00:00:16.200 --> 00:00:21.250
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Are you feeling powerless,
  • 00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:25.110
  • powerless to control your destiny?
  • 00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:28.020
  • The fate of our nation, your career, financial security,
  • 00:00:28.030 --> 00:00:31.270
  • and even your daily life?
  • 00:00:31.280 --> 00:00:34.280
  • We are in a spiritual battle for our hearts and minds,
  • 00:00:37.060 --> 00:00:43.290
  • sometimes with little strength to be victorious.
  • 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.000
  • What if I told you there is one who can empower you
  • 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.100
  • to prevail over the emotional, physical,
  • 00:00:57.110 --> 00:01:00.110
  • and spiritual chaos in your life,
  • 00:01:00.120 --> 00:01:02.270
  • one who can give you the power to be more than a conqueror,
  • 00:01:05.110 --> 00:01:09.060
  • more than a winner, more than a victor,
  • 00:01:09.070 --> 00:01:12.140
  • but an overcomer?
  • 00:01:12.150 --> 00:01:14.150
  • As an overcomer, you are no longer defined
  • 00:01:16.050 --> 00:01:18.140
  • by your trials but by your victories.
  • 00:01:18.150 --> 00:01:22.290
  • As an overcomer, you put on God-given armor
  • 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:26.020
  • that both protects you from the enemy
  • 00:01:26.030 --> 00:01:28.060
  • and empowers you to conquer your greatest obstacles.
  • 00:01:28.070 --> 00:01:32.120
  • Dr. Jeremiah: We're called to be overcomers,
  • 00:01:34.110 --> 00:01:35.230
  • men and women.
  • 00:01:35.240 --> 00:01:37.030
  • We're called to walk in victory, and strength,
  • 00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:38.280
  • and peace, and love.
  • 00:01:38.290 --> 00:01:40.270
  • Sometimes I hear people say
  • 00:01:40.280 --> 00:01:42.090
  • when I ask them how they're doing,
  • 00:01:42.100 --> 00:01:43.200
  • "I'm doing okay down under the circumstances."
  • 00:01:43.210 --> 00:01:46.120
  • But we don't belong under the circumstances,
  • 00:01:46.130 --> 00:01:48.110
  • we belong above the circumstances.
  • 00:01:48.120 --> 00:01:50.130
  • We're not undercomers, we're overcomers, amen?
  • 00:01:50.140 --> 00:01:54.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Live a life of unstoppable strength,
  • 00:01:56.160 --> 00:01:58.280
  • unmovable faith, and unbelievable power.
  • 00:01:58.290 --> 00:02:02.250
  • Discover how you can be an overcomer.
  • 00:02:02.260 --> 00:02:06.260
  • 00:02:06.290 --> 00:02:11.230
  • male announcer: Unstoppable strength,
  • 00:02:11.240 --> 00:02:13.130
  • unmovable faith, unbelievable power,
  • 00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:16.210

  • And now, here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
  • 00:03:34.140 --> 00:03:38.070
  • Overcoming Fear With Faith.
  • 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.130
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: When he was in college,
  • 00:03:41.200 --> 00:03:43.020
  • my friend Ken Davis delivered a talk to his speech class
  • 00:03:43.030 --> 00:03:47.060
  • on the law of the pendulum.
  • 00:03:47.070 --> 00:03:50.110
  • This law says that when a free-hanging weight swings
  • 00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:53.230
  • back and forth, it will swing a shorter and shorter distance
  • 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:58.210
  • due to the effects of gravity and friction.
  • 00:03:58.220 --> 00:04:01.220
  • Eventually it will stop and hang dead unless it's restarted.
  • 00:04:01.230 --> 00:04:06.250
  • To demonstrate from a pivot at the top of a blackboard,
  • 00:04:06.260 --> 00:04:10.250
  • Ken hung a three-foot string with a small weight attached
  • 00:04:10.260 --> 00:04:14.070
  • at the bottom, creating a simple pendulum.
  • 00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:17.180
  • Setting the pendulum in motion so that it would swing parallel
  • 00:04:17.190 --> 00:04:20.190
  • to the blackboard, he made a mark
  • 00:04:20.200 --> 00:04:22.170
  • on the blackboard at each outward point
  • 00:04:22.180 --> 00:04:24.140
  • where the pendulum reached its arc.
  • 00:04:24.150 --> 00:04:26.240
  • As the pendulum continued to swing, the length of each arc
  • 00:04:26.250 --> 00:04:30.050
  • decreased causing the marks to grow closer and closer
  • 00:04:30.060 --> 00:04:33.200
  • to the center of the blackboard.
  • 00:04:33.210 --> 00:04:35.260
  • That demonstrated the law of the pendulum in action.
  • 00:04:35.270 --> 00:04:40.030
  • The law states that a swinging pendulum never again reaches
  • 00:04:40.040 --> 00:04:43.170
  • the point from which it began its previous arc.
  • 00:04:43.180 --> 00:04:48.010
  • Ken declared, "Who believes that statement is true?"
  • 00:04:48.020 --> 00:04:52.260
  • And a show of hands indicated he had convinced both
  • 00:04:52.270 --> 00:04:55.060
  • his professor and his class, but Ken wasn't finished.
  • 00:04:55.070 --> 00:05:00.210
  • Next he asked his professor to stand with his back against
  • 00:05:00.220 --> 00:05:04.010
  • the wall and using a much heavier weight,
  • 00:05:04.020 --> 00:05:07.030
  • which he had previously attached to the ceiling
  • 00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:09.020
  • with a strong rope, he pulled the weight
  • 00:05:09.030 --> 00:05:11.100
  • from its center point and held it one inch
  • 00:05:11.110 --> 00:05:14.000
  • from the professor's nose and he let it go.
  • 00:05:14.010 --> 00:05:18.020
  • And the weight swung away from the professor,
  • 00:05:18.030 --> 00:05:20.190
  • reached the end of its arc, and started back
  • 00:05:20.200 --> 00:05:22.230
  • heading straight for the professor's face,
  • 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:25.290
  • but it never came close to touching the professor
  • 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:27.260
  • because he scooted out of there in a hurry.
  • 00:05:27.270 --> 00:05:30.010
  • The sight of the weight heading straight at him
  • 00:05:30.020 --> 00:05:32.210
  • was more than he could take and he dove out of the way.
  • 00:05:32.220 --> 00:05:38.010
  • Now, the professor said he believed in the law
  • 00:05:38.020 --> 00:05:41.090
  • of the pendulum, but he wasn't willing
  • 00:05:41.100 --> 00:05:44.170
  • to put his faith in the test.
  • 00:05:44.180 --> 00:05:48.070
  • Ken's point was faith can only be proven by our actions.
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:54.100
  • For followers of Jesus, a lack of faith is seldom
  • 00:05:54.110 --> 00:05:57.220
  • a matter of disbelief.
  • 00:05:57.230 --> 00:05:59.280
  • It's usually a matter of fear.
  • 00:05:59.290 --> 00:06:03.000
  • As C.S. Lewis wrote, "Faith is the art of holding on
  • 00:06:03.010 --> 00:06:06.270
  • to things your reason has once accepted
  • 00:06:06.280 --> 00:06:09.160
  • in spite of your changing moods."
  • 00:06:09.170 --> 00:06:13.090
  • Our moods, that is, our emotions like fear,
  • 00:06:13.100 --> 00:06:16.130
  • exert influence that unless we master them,
  • 00:06:16.140 --> 00:06:19.250
  • they can destroy our trust in what we know to be true.
  • 00:06:19.260 --> 00:06:24.000
  • Now, we usually think of faith as a biblical
  • 00:06:24.010 --> 00:06:26.250
  • or theological term, but we live by faith every day.
  • 00:06:26.260 --> 00:06:31.290
  • Even if we didn't know God, we still live by faith.
  • 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:34.250
  • Think about flying for instance, the faith it takes to step
  • 00:06:34.260 --> 00:06:38.200
  • into a metal tube and hurl through the air at 30.000 feet
  • 00:06:38.210 --> 00:06:43.100
  • above the ground while going 500 miles per hour.
  • 00:06:43.110 --> 00:06:47.130
  • And the terminology defining air flight doesn't help.
  • 00:06:47.140 --> 00:06:51.210
  • For instance, we end our flight at a terminal,
  • 00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:57.260
  • which the flight attendant assures us we'll reach
  • 00:06:57.270 --> 00:07:00.200
  • as we make our final approach.
  • 00:07:00.210 --> 00:07:05.230
  • Then we're told to stay seated until the plane comes
  • 00:07:05.240 --> 00:07:07.280
  • to a complete stop, and I've always wondered
  • 00:07:07.290 --> 00:07:10.200
  • what an incomplete stop would feel like.
  • 00:07:10.210 --> 00:07:14.270
  • I mean, who comes up with terminology like this?
  • 00:07:14.280 --> 00:07:17.140
  • I mean, we don't help matters by choosing the airline
  • 00:07:17.150 --> 00:07:19.290
  • that offers us the cheapest flight.
  • 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:23.120
  • Yet despite all these opportunities for fear,
  • 00:07:23.130 --> 00:07:26.190
  • most everyone in this room has gotten on an airplane and
  • 00:07:26.200 --> 00:07:29.120
  • trusted people you've never met, you've never vetted,
  • 00:07:29.130 --> 00:07:34.050
  • you don't anything about them, and an aircraft which
  • 00:07:34.060 --> 00:07:37.190
  • you don't know if it's been maintenanced right or anything,
  • 00:07:37.200 --> 00:07:41.050
  • you just get in.
  • 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:42.280
  • That's what we call blind faith.
  • 00:07:42.290 --> 00:07:46.020
  • Every day, you act on faith in human life.
  • 00:07:46.030 --> 00:07:48.120
  • If you put your faith in the pilot of an airplane,
  • 00:07:48.130 --> 00:07:52.080
  • surely you should be able to figure out a way to put
  • 00:07:52.090 --> 00:07:54.140
  • your faith in Jesus Christ.
  • 00:07:54.150 --> 00:07:57.140
  • So, we come to this forth military implement that's
  • 00:07:57.150 --> 00:08:00.230
  • in this series of war things that we're talking about
  • 00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:03.070
  • from Ephesians 6 and in 6:16 here's what it says,
  • 00:08:03.080 --> 00:08:07.020
  • "Above all, take the shield of faith with which
  • 00:08:07.030 --> 00:08:12.020
  • you will be able to quench all the fiery darts
  • 00:08:12.030 --> 00:08:14.200
  • of the wicked one."
  • 00:08:14.210 --> 00:08:17.240
  • Now, when Paul wrote that,
  • 00:08:17.250 --> 00:08:19.090
  • he was describing a large shield,
  • 00:08:19.100 --> 00:08:22.010
  • a Roman infantry used to protect their whole bodies,
  • 00:08:22.020 --> 00:08:25.070
  • and you've probably seen movies about this
  • 00:08:25.080 --> 00:08:27.140
  • or you've read about it.
  • 00:08:27.150 --> 00:08:30.070
  • These shields were 4 feet tall, 2-1/2 feet wide,
  • 00:08:30.080 --> 00:08:33.210
  • and they were made out of leather that was stretched
  • 00:08:33.220 --> 00:08:35.210
  • over wood.
  • 00:08:35.220 --> 00:08:37.010
  • They were reinforced with metal at the top and at the bottom.
  • 00:08:37.020 --> 00:08:41.050
  • And in ancient times, enemy warriors would dip
  • 00:08:41.060 --> 00:08:44.220
  • the tips of their darts or arrows
  • 00:08:44.230 --> 00:08:46.280
  • into a solution of lethal poison.
  • 00:08:46.290 --> 00:08:49.120
  • Even if these darts only grazed the soldier's skin,
  • 00:08:49.130 --> 00:08:53.030
  • the poison would spread through his bloodstream
  • 00:08:53.040 --> 00:08:54.280
  • and he would be dead in a moment.
  • 00:08:54.290 --> 00:08:58.000
  • On other occasions, the enemy would dip their darts in pitch
  • 00:08:58.010 --> 00:09:01.110
  • and ignite them and shoot them into the Roman camp
  • 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:05.020
  • setting it on fire.
  • 00:09:05.030 --> 00:09:06.150
  • So, having a shield to protect yourself from these darts
  • 00:09:06.160 --> 00:09:09.260
  • which came from outside was really critical.
  • 00:09:09.270 --> 00:09:12.210
  • And of all of the implements of warfare included
  • 00:09:12.220 --> 00:09:15.210
  • in Paul's list in Ephesians 6, this is the only piece
  • 00:09:15.220 --> 00:09:20.120
  • that is given a specified purpose.
  • 00:09:20.130 --> 00:09:22.280
  • Paul tells us that the purpose of the shield of faith is
  • 00:09:22.290 --> 00:09:26.150
  • to protect us from the fiery darts of the wicked one.
  • 00:09:26.160 --> 00:09:31.060
  • And if you're a Christian, throughout your lifetime
  • 00:09:31.070 --> 00:09:34.230
  • you will be bombarded by thousands of fiery arrows
  • 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:38.070
  • launched by Satan and his helpers and the only way
  • 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:41.150
  • to protect yourself is through faith.
  • 00:09:41.160 --> 00:09:44.140
  • This is the victory that overcomes the world,
  • 00:09:44.150 --> 00:09:47.030
  • even our faith.
  • 00:09:47.040 --> 00:09:49.190
  • So, how does faith work?
  • 00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:52.190
  • How do we get faith?
  • 00:09:52.200 --> 00:09:54.040
  • How do we develop faith in our lives?
  • 00:09:54.050 --> 00:09:56.070
  • How does it overcome fear?
  • 00:09:56.080 --> 00:09:59.040
  • Someone has said that faith is an act of practice
  • 00:09:59.050 --> 00:10:01.190
  • built on belief.
  • 00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:03.260
  • The future's made real for men and women of faith.
  • 00:10:03.270 --> 00:10:06.220
  • Faith is not ambiguous, it's not unsure.
  • 00:10:06.230 --> 00:10:09.090
  • It's a concrete conviction.
  • 00:10:09.100 --> 00:10:11.050
  • Sometimes you hear people talk about faith and you get the idea
  • 00:10:11.060 --> 00:10:13.080
  • that it's sort of a hope so, wished so kind
  • 00:10:13.090 --> 00:10:16.020
  • of a nebulous thing, but faith isn't like that at all.
  • 00:10:16.030 --> 00:10:18.280
  • Faith is an attitude based upon fact.
  • 00:10:18.290 --> 00:10:22.090
  • By faith, we move forward, even when we do not know
  • 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:27.040
  • what's ahead.
  • 00:10:27.050 --> 00:10:28.240
  • We take our faith from the Word of God
  • 00:10:28.250 --> 00:10:30.250
  • and we know the destination is clear.
  • 00:10:30.260 --> 00:10:33.060
  • Faith says that what God has promised is gonna happen
  • 00:10:33.070 --> 00:10:35.290
  • and it's so certain that it's almost
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:38.080
  • as if it's already happened.
  • 00:10:38.090 --> 00:10:40.010
  • Faith treats things that are hoped for as a reality.
  • 00:10:40.020 --> 00:10:43.270
  • That's what Hebrews 11:1 means when it says,
  • 00:10:43.280 --> 00:10:46.130
  • "Faith is the substance of things hoped for,
  • 00:10:46.140 --> 00:10:48.210
  • the evidence of things not seen."
  • 00:10:48.220 --> 00:10:51.100
  • You may be among many of us who sometimes feels like
  • 00:10:51.110 --> 00:10:55.150
  • your faith is kind of small, but Paul tells us
  • 00:10:55.160 --> 00:10:59.140
  • that we don't have to be happy with our faith where it is.
  • 00:10:59.150 --> 00:11:04.220
  • How do we increase our faith? How do we grow our faith?
  • 00:11:04.230 --> 00:11:08.190
  • How can we find in the Word of God the principles
  • 00:11:08.200 --> 00:11:11.010
  • that will help us not have little bitty faith
  • 00:11:11.020 --> 00:11:14.090
  • when God wants us to have great faith?
  • 00:11:14.100 --> 00:11:16.220
  • I know that faith can be increased
  • 00:11:16.230 --> 00:11:18.290
  • because Paul looked forward to the increase
  • 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.030
  • in the Corinthians faith.
  • 00:11:22.040 --> 00:11:23.280
  • The Bible says, "He longed to visit the believers
  • 00:11:23.290 --> 00:11:26.040
  • in Thessalonica," watch this, "to strengthen
  • 00:11:26.050 --> 00:11:28.220
  • what was lacking in their faith."
  • 00:11:28.230 --> 00:11:31.090
  • In his second letter to them, he commended them
  • 00:11:31.100 --> 00:11:33.220
  • for the growth in their faith.
  • 00:11:33.230 --> 00:11:35.220
  • I don't know if I've ever heard this before but,
  • 00:11:35.230 --> 00:11:38.040
  • you know, faith grows.
  • 00:11:38.050 --> 00:11:40.030
  • You can grow your faith.
  • 00:11:40.040 --> 00:11:41.200
  • Your faith doesn't have to be small.
  • 00:11:41.210 --> 00:11:43.220
  • God wants our faith to grow and to be better than it is now.
  • 00:11:43.230 --> 00:11:47.100
  • So, here's what the Bible says is necessary for your faith
  • 00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:51.270
  • and my faith to grow.
  • 00:11:51.280 --> 00:11:53.270
  • To grow your faith, you need preaching.
  • 00:11:53.280 --> 00:11:57.140
  • You say, "Well, pastor, I expect to do that
  • 00:11:57.150 --> 00:11:59.200
  • 'cause that's what you do."
  • 00:11:59.210 --> 00:12:01.150
  • But I'm not making this up.
  • 00:12:01.160 --> 00:12:02.250
  • This is right from the Word of God.
  • 00:12:02.260 --> 00:12:04.050
  • The Apostle Paul said, "Faith comes by hearing
  • 00:12:04.060 --> 00:12:08.100
  • and hearing by the Word of God."
  • 00:12:08.110 --> 00:12:11.210
  • He did not mean all who hear the Word of God become believers,
  • 00:12:11.220 --> 00:12:15.150
  • what he meant was that faith can't exist unless
  • 00:12:15.160 --> 00:12:18.140
  • there's a message or a report of facts and events
  • 00:12:18.150 --> 00:12:21.270
  • that lead us to believe.
  • 00:12:21.280 --> 00:12:23.090
  • If you never sit under the sound of the Word of God
  • 00:12:23.100 --> 00:12:26.060
  • through preaching, you are missing
  • 00:12:26.070 --> 00:12:28.050
  • an important opportunity to grow your faith.
  • 00:12:28.060 --> 00:12:32.120
  • The Bible says, "Faith comes by hearing and hearing
  • 00:12:32.130 --> 00:12:36.220
  • by the Word of God."
  • 00:12:36.230 --> 00:12:38.070
  • When God--watch this, when God tells us
  • 00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:40.080
  • to do something and we do it, we strengthen our faith.
  • 00:12:40.090 --> 00:12:43.190
  • We strengthen our ability to believe him.
  • 00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:46.120
  • We discover that he's for us and he's directing us
  • 00:12:46.130 --> 00:12:49.030
  • in the things that we should do.
  • 00:12:49.040 --> 00:12:51.200
  • Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the Word God.
  • 00:12:51.210 --> 00:12:54.140
  • Say that with me, "Faith comes by hearing
  • 00:12:54.150 --> 00:12:57.080
  • and hearing by the Word of God."
  • 00:12:57.090 --> 00:13:00.040
  • So, to grow your faith, you need preaching.
  • 00:13:00.050 --> 00:13:02.040
  • All you pastors here, I just did a shout out for you
  • 00:13:02.050 --> 00:13:05.220
  • and your people need to come to church and hear you preach
  • 00:13:05.230 --> 00:13:08.160
  • so that they can grow their faith.
  • 00:13:08.170 --> 00:13:10.220
  • Number two, this isn't as exciting.
  • 00:13:10.230 --> 00:13:14.110
  • To grow your faith you need problems.
  • 00:13:14.120 --> 00:13:19.030
  • I guess that means all of us are candidates tonight
  • 00:13:19.040 --> 00:13:21.110
  • 'cause we all got problems, right?
  • 00:13:21.120 --> 00:13:23.270
  • None of us wants problems.
  • 00:13:23.280 --> 00:13:25.240
  • I mean, I don't wake up in the morning and say,
  • 00:13:25.250 --> 00:13:27.190
  • "Lord God, give me some problems today"
  • 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:30.150
  • 'cause I know he's already in the process doing it.
  • 00:13:30.160 --> 00:13:35.000
  • We want life to be smooth.
  • 00:13:35.010 --> 00:13:36.270
  • We'd rather not have problems.
  • 00:13:36.280 --> 00:13:38.240
  • We want happy relationships, fulfilling jobs, great health,
  • 00:13:38.250 --> 00:13:43.020
  • obedient children and problems get in the way of all of that,
  • 00:13:43.030 --> 00:13:46.240
  • don't they?
  • 00:13:46.250 --> 00:13:48.050
  • Problems hit us like storms and they bring waves
  • 00:13:48.060 --> 00:13:50.130
  • of fear and disruption.
  • 00:13:50.140 --> 00:13:52.060
  • I don't like problems.
  • 00:13:52.070 --> 00:13:53.200
  • I wish I didn't have so many of them all the time.
  • 00:13:53.210 --> 00:13:56.240
  • But problems are God's way of driving us to him.
  • 00:13:56.250 --> 00:14:02.030
  • Problems drive us to the Lord and teach us
  • 00:14:02.040 --> 00:14:04.170
  • to lean on the Lord.
  • 00:14:04.180 --> 00:14:06.050
  • They grow our confidence in the unseen reality of God
  • 00:14:06.060 --> 00:14:09.240
  • and in his involvement in our lives.
  • 00:14:09.250 --> 00:14:13.040
  • And that's what God does with problems.
  • 00:14:13.050 --> 00:14:14.250
  • He put us in situations where you can't look any place but up.
  • 00:14:14.260 --> 00:14:18.080
  • If you're in a hospital bed with cancer,
  • 00:14:18.090 --> 00:14:20.150
  • like I was several years ago, the only direction you can look
  • 00:14:20.160 --> 00:14:23.020
  • when you're in a hospital bed is up and that's where
  • 00:14:23.030 --> 00:14:26.010
  • you need to be looking all the time.
  • 00:14:26.020 --> 00:14:28.170
  • Our default tendency is to trust in ourselves and lean on
  • 00:14:28.180 --> 00:14:32.110
  • our own understanding.
  • 00:14:32.120 --> 00:14:33.210
  • Can I get a witness?
  • 00:14:33.220 --> 00:14:35.040
  • When we encounter a problem that's bigger than our ability
  • 00:14:35.050 --> 00:14:37.250
  • to handle, that's when we learn that our own resources
  • 00:14:37.260 --> 00:14:41.160
  • are inadequate and that we can truly rely on Jesus
  • 00:14:41.170 --> 00:14:44.210
  • till we stop trying to rely on ourselves.
  • 00:14:44.220 --> 00:14:48.200
  • God uses problems to deepen your faith and to deepen my faith.
  • 00:14:48.210 --> 00:14:53.130
  • Ideally, we reach out to Jesus as a first resort, not the last.
  • 00:14:53.140 --> 00:14:58.020
  • I get so tired of people coming to me and saying,
  • 00:14:58.030 --> 00:14:59.280
  • "Dr. Jeremiah, we worked on this and worked on it,
  • 00:14:59.290 --> 00:15:02.050
  • and I guess the only thing we have left is to pray."
  • 00:15:02.060 --> 00:15:05.150
  • And I want to tell them, you've just been reduced
  • 00:15:05.160 --> 00:15:07.040
  • to the most powerful influence in the world.
  • 00:15:07.050 --> 00:15:10.110
  • When we pray, we enter into all that God can do and we pray
  • 00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:14.220
  • in faith believing that God can make a difference
  • 00:15:14.230 --> 00:15:18.050
  • because we know from our past experience that that is true.
  • 00:15:18.060 --> 00:15:22.290
  • So, we grow our faith through preaching when we hear
  • 00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:25.150
  • the Word of God, and we grow our faith
  • 00:15:25.160 --> 00:15:28.070
  • when God sends us some problems.
  • 00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:30.080
  • What do you do when problems come?
  • 00:15:30.090 --> 00:15:32.070
  • If you're like all of us, you probably say,
  • 00:15:32.080 --> 00:15:33.290
  • "Lord God, make this go away," or maybe we get in perspective
  • 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:37.050
  • and we say, "Lord God, why?"
  • 00:15:37.060 --> 00:15:41.010
  • But I'll give you a new interrogative.
  • 00:15:41.020 --> 00:15:43.060
  • "Lord God, what, what you are you trying to teach me
  • 00:15:43.070 --> 00:15:46.140
  • through all these things that I'm experiencing right now?"
  • 00:15:46.150 --> 00:15:49.010
  • When you use that interrogative, then God can go to work
  • 00:15:49.020 --> 00:15:51.250
  • in your life and stretch your faith and grow your faith,
  • 00:15:51.260 --> 00:15:54.130
  • and guess what.
  • 00:15:54.140 --> 00:15:55.270
  • When God carries you through a problem and you look back on it,
  • 00:15:55.280 --> 00:15:58.170
  • it gives you the muscles to believe him the next time
  • 00:15:58.180 --> 00:16:01.260
  • you go through some problem because you know
  • 00:16:01.270 --> 00:16:04.010
  • he was with you back then and he's gonna be with you
  • 00:16:04.020 --> 00:16:06.030
  • in the future.
  • 00:16:06.040 --> 00:16:07.270
  • So, we grow our faith through preaching.
  • 00:16:07.280 --> 00:16:10.110
  • We grow our faith through problems.
  • 00:16:10.120 --> 00:16:12.110
  • We grow our faith through people.
  • 00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:16.150
  • We need people.
  • 00:16:16.160 --> 00:16:18.140
  • Let me tell you something, faith grows better
  • 00:16:18.150 --> 00:16:20.170
  • in community than it does by itself.
  • 00:16:20.180 --> 00:16:22.190
  • We grow better together, amen?
  • 00:16:22.200 --> 00:16:25.210
  • That's what the church is all about.
  • 00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:27.020
  • That's what groups are all about.
  • 00:16:27.030 --> 00:16:28.120
  • That's what ministry teams are all about.
  • 00:16:28.130 --> 00:16:30.040
  • Don't be an isolated person.
  • 00:16:30.050 --> 00:16:32.050
  • Don't put yourself in a position where you only have you.
  • 00:16:32.060 --> 00:16:37.040
  • Put yourself in a position where you have others
  • 00:16:37.050 --> 00:16:38.290
  • and the others have you as well.
  • 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.290
  • To grow our faith, we need purpose.
  • 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:45.000
  • Daniel Ritchie was born without any arms.
  • 00:16:45.010 --> 00:16:47.260
  • It was challenging for him just to function by using his feet
  • 00:16:47.270 --> 00:16:51.250
  • and his toes to dress and groom himself,
  • 00:16:51.260 --> 00:16:54.280
  • to eat and open doors and drive, but he did it.
  • 00:16:54.290 --> 00:16:58.130
  • His greater challenge was dealing with the attitudes
  • 00:16:58.140 --> 00:17:00.270
  • that were toward him by the people he met.
  • 00:17:00.280 --> 00:17:02.200
  • He endured stares and insults and rudeness,
  • 00:17:02.210 --> 00:17:06.010
  • and his family was even asked to leave a restaurant
  • 00:17:06.020 --> 00:17:08.090
  • because his eating with his feet offended other people
  • 00:17:08.100 --> 00:17:11.190
  • in the dining room.
  • 00:17:11.200 --> 00:17:13.180
  • The worst was the assumption sometimes expressed directly
  • 00:17:13.190 --> 00:17:16.170
  • that he was a helpless mistake, a misfit,
  • 00:17:16.180 --> 00:17:20.250
  • insufficient to lead a full life.
  • 00:17:20.260 --> 00:17:23.170
  • As a result, Daniel came to believe
  • 00:17:23.180 --> 00:17:26.180
  • that he wasn't worth anything and he developed a hatred
  • 00:17:26.190 --> 00:17:29.190
  • for himself and for the people who hated him.
  • 00:17:29.200 --> 00:17:33.190
  • Daniel was not a Christian, had almost no friends.
  • 00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:38.070
  • One night a classmate took him to church.
  • 00:17:38.080 --> 00:17:41.140
  • That evening the preacher gave a simple devotional
  • 00:17:41.150 --> 00:17:43.190
  • on the love of God for all people.
  • 00:17:43.200 --> 00:17:45.290
  • He quoted Psalm 139, verse 14,
  • 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:48.190
  • "I will praise for you I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
  • 00:17:48.200 --> 00:17:53.100
  • marvelous are your works."
  • 00:17:53.110 --> 00:17:55.190
  • And that message penetrated Daniel's heart
  • 00:17:55.200 --> 00:17:57.270
  • and he realized God created him for a purpose and that he was
  • 00:17:57.280 --> 00:18:00.200
  • a marvelous work of God every bit as much
  • 00:18:00.210 --> 00:18:03.110
  • as those who had arms.
  • 00:18:03.120 --> 00:18:05.050
  • And that night, Daniel Ritchie
  • 00:18:05.060 --> 00:18:07.000
  • gave his life to Christ.
  • 00:18:07.010 --> 00:18:08.190
  • And shortly afterward, he felt called to the ministry.
  • 00:18:08.200 --> 00:18:11.090
  • He now preaches and speaks at churches, and conferences,
  • 00:18:11.100 --> 00:18:15.170
  • and youth events in the U.S. and all over the world.
  • 00:18:15.180 --> 00:18:20.000
  • As he put it, he uses his empty sleeves
  • 00:18:20.010 --> 00:18:23.000
  • to point people toward God.
  • 00:18:23.010 --> 00:18:26.110
  • I love these stories because they,
  • 00:18:31.150 --> 00:18:34.200
  • not just tell us the truth, the show us the truth.
  • 00:18:34.210 --> 00:18:38.060
  • God often gives us a purpose that requires us to trust him
  • 00:18:38.070 --> 00:18:43.030
  • in special ways, that's one reason why Jesus loved
  • 00:18:43.040 --> 00:18:46.120
  • to give his disciples tasks and challenges to build their faith.
  • 00:18:46.130 --> 00:18:50.150
  • He always did that.
  • 00:18:50.160 --> 00:18:51.260
  • He would take them out in the middle of a storm
  • 00:18:51.270 --> 00:18:53.190
  • and go to sleep in the boat.
  • 00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:56.090
  • What was he doing? He was teaching them faith.
  • 00:18:56.100 --> 00:18:58.270
  • Were they gonna worry about the storm even if they had
  • 00:18:58.280 --> 00:19:01.010
  • to Creator of the universe in their boat?
  • 00:19:01.020 --> 00:19:03.060
  • Yeah, they did.
  • 00:19:03.070 --> 00:19:05.020
  • And he told them they didn't have much faith
  • 00:19:05.030 --> 00:19:06.190
  • and that was true.
  • 00:19:06.200 --> 00:19:08.190
  • He sent them out two by two to preach and cast out demons
  • 00:19:08.200 --> 00:19:11.260
  • and heal the sick.
  • 00:19:11.270 --> 00:19:13.150
  • On one occasion he commanded them to feed 5.000 people
  • 00:19:13.160 --> 00:19:16.050
  • with only five loaves of bread and two fish and another to do
  • 00:19:16.060 --> 00:19:19.250
  • the same with 4.000 and seven loaves and a few small fish.
  • 00:19:19.260 --> 00:19:23.110
  • And then at the end of his earthly ministry,
  • 00:19:23.120 --> 00:19:25.100
  • he sent them ahead to Jerusalem and told them to wait 'cause
  • 00:19:25.110 --> 00:19:28.090
  • the Holy Spirit was gonna come.
  • 00:19:28.100 --> 00:19:30.160
  • God gives us a sense of purpose as his way of stretching
  • 00:19:30.170 --> 00:19:34.140
  • and strengthening our faith muscles.
  • 00:19:34.150 --> 00:19:37.060
  • When I meet people across the country who know
  • 00:19:37.070 --> 00:19:40.160
  • what we do in radio, and television,
  • 00:19:40.170 --> 00:19:42.190
  • and at our church, one of the questions
  • 00:19:42.200 --> 00:19:44.200
  • they often ask me,
  • 00:19:44.210 --> 00:19:46.060
  • "Did you envision this when you first started?"
  • 00:19:46.070 --> 00:19:49.020
  • And I sort of smile at that because no,
  • 00:19:49.030 --> 00:19:51.150
  • I started in a mobile home church with 35 people.
  • 00:19:51.160 --> 00:19:55.100
  • Could I have seen what God was going to do now?
  • 00:19:55.110 --> 00:19:57.240
  • Absolutely not.
  • 00:19:57.250 --> 00:19:59.260
  • But all along the way, God kept putting things in front of me
  • 00:19:59.270 --> 00:20:04.010
  • that I couldn't, in my own mind and heart,
  • 00:20:04.020 --> 00:20:07.070
  • believe but I knew God wanted me do.
  • 00:20:07.080 --> 00:20:11.030
  • It was build this building, grab hold of this station,
  • 00:20:11.040 --> 00:20:15.030
  • take this--and every time I took a step of faith,
  • 00:20:15.040 --> 00:20:19.050
  • almighty God showed me that's what he was teaching me.
  • 00:20:19.060 --> 00:20:22.260
  • We learn faith by stretching our faith muscles.
  • 00:20:22.270 --> 00:20:26.040
  • If we're only gonna trust God for what we already have,
  • 00:20:26.050 --> 00:20:28.260
  • we cannot grow our faith.
  • 00:20:28.270 --> 00:20:30.140
  • We need projects. We need problems.
  • 00:20:30.150 --> 00:20:32.240
  • We need challenges to trust God for what we cannot see ourselves
  • 00:20:32.250 --> 00:20:36.230
  • capable of doing and then watching God do it.
  • 00:20:36.240 --> 00:20:41.210
  • To grow our faith, we need problems,
  • 00:20:41.220 --> 00:20:44.190
  • and to grow our faith, we need people.
  • 00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:47.040
  • To grow our faith, we need purpose and perspective.
  • 00:20:47.050 --> 00:20:51.040
  • What perspective do we need?
  • 00:20:51.050 --> 00:20:52.150
  • The disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith
  • 00:20:53.150 --> 00:20:55.220
  • and Jesus said to them, "If your faith is as small
  • 00:20:55.230 --> 00:21:00.110
  • as a mustard seed, you can uproot and cast
  • 00:21:00.120 --> 00:21:03.070
  • a mulberry tree into the sea."
  • 00:21:03.080 --> 00:21:05.160
  • Now, I've heard that preached on and misapplied many times.
  • 00:21:05.170 --> 00:21:10.290
  • In other words, Jesus was saying this,
  • 00:21:11.000 --> 00:21:13.260
  • it's not the size of your faith that counts,
  • 00:21:13.270 --> 00:21:16.280
  • it's the size of your God that counts.
  • 00:21:16.290 --> 00:21:20.130
  • Jesus's disciples needed the proper perspective
  • 00:21:20.140 --> 00:21:23.030
  • in order to grow their faith.
  • 00:21:23.040 --> 00:21:24.260
  • I get an object lesson on perspective
  • 00:21:24.270 --> 00:21:27.040
  • whenever I drive my car.
  • 00:21:27.050 --> 00:21:30.000
  • With power steering, I can turn my two-ton automobile
  • 00:21:30.010 --> 00:21:33.010
  • around with one finger, not because
  • 00:21:33.020 --> 00:21:35.000
  • my finger is that strong, but because
  • 00:21:35.010 --> 00:21:37.150
  • the power steering in the car is.
  • 00:21:37.160 --> 00:21:40.170
  • My finger just acts to engage the power
  • 00:21:40.180 --> 00:21:43.050
  • and that accomplishes the task.
  • 00:21:43.060 --> 00:21:45.200
  • That's how faith works.
  • 00:21:45.210 --> 00:21:47.290
  • Biblically speaking, faith is a mere human activity.
  • 00:21:48.000 --> 00:21:51.090
  • It possesses no virtue, holds no merit,
  • 00:21:51.100 --> 00:21:53.260
  • contains no power.
  • 00:21:53.270 --> 00:21:55.070
  • The power of faith is in God.
  • 00:21:55.080 --> 00:21:58.240
  • So, don't sit around say, "Well, my faith is--"
  • 00:21:58.250 --> 00:22:00.210
  • No, it's not your faith.
  • 00:22:00.220 --> 00:22:02.100
  • You just need to get a bigger God in your head
  • 00:22:02.110 --> 00:22:04.290
  • and realize that God is able to do above and beyond
  • 00:22:05.000 --> 00:22:07.120
  • all that you can ask or think.
  • 00:22:07.130 --> 00:22:09.130
  • When I was going out witnessing back when we started the church
  • 00:22:10.200 --> 00:22:13.060
  • in Fort Wayne almost every night,
  • 00:22:13.070 --> 00:22:15.100
  • I used to use this illustration about faith 'cause faith is
  • 00:22:15.110 --> 00:22:17.230
  • really critical to somebody becoming a Christian.
  • 00:22:17.240 --> 00:22:20.220
  • If they don't understand faith, they can't become a Christian
  • 00:22:20.230 --> 00:22:24.030
  • so you have to work on them, and they have
  • 00:22:24.040 --> 00:22:25.130
  • all kinds of questions.
  • 00:22:25.140 --> 00:22:26.230
  • Well, somebody gave me this little illustration, here it is.
  • 00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:28.280
  • Suppose you went to Minnesota in the wintertime
  • 00:22:28.290 --> 00:22:31.230
  • to go ice fishing.
  • 00:22:31.240 --> 00:22:33.250
  • I want to give you a question, would you rather have
  • 00:22:33.260 --> 00:22:37.270
  • a little bit of faith in two feet of ice
  • 00:22:37.280 --> 00:22:42.210
  • or a whole lot of faith in an inch of ice?
  • 00:22:42.220 --> 00:22:47.140
  • I ask that question everywhere and, you know,
  • 00:22:47.150 --> 00:22:49.060
  • the majority of people would say,
  • 00:22:49.070 --> 00:22:50.270
  • "I think I should have a whole lot of faith in an inch of ice."
  • 00:22:50.280 --> 00:22:55.040
  • And I would write down, don't ever go fishing
  • 00:22:55.050 --> 00:22:57.000
  • with that guy, you know?
  • 00:22:57.010 --> 00:22:59.270
  • Isn't that an interesting thing?
  • 00:22:59.280 --> 00:23:01.220
  • It isn't how much faith we have, it's how secure the object
  • 00:23:01.230 --> 00:23:04.230
  • of our faith is.
  • 00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:06.130
  • I'd rather have a little bit of faith in two feet of ice.
  • 00:23:06.140 --> 00:23:09.000
  • I feel secure doing that, how about you?
  • 00:23:09.010 --> 00:23:11.150
  • Instead of having a whole lot of faith and a little tiny bit of--
  • 00:23:11.160 --> 00:23:13.280
  • you can get wet if you do that, but that's really the key.
  • 00:23:13.290 --> 00:23:19.040
  • That's the perspective we need.
  • 00:23:19.050 --> 00:23:20.270
  • The Bible says we have not because, what?
  • 00:23:20.280 --> 00:23:23.070
  • We ask not.
  • 00:23:23.080 --> 00:23:24.210
  • When was the last time you asked God for something that required
  • 00:23:24.220 --> 00:23:26.200
  • a little faith on your part?
  • 00:23:26.210 --> 00:23:28.140
  • Sometimes we just ask God for stuff that we know we can get
  • 00:23:28.150 --> 00:23:30.290
  • on our own so we can give him a little credit along the way.
  • 00:23:31.000 --> 00:23:34.250
  • What if we stretched ourselves?
  • 00:23:34.260 --> 00:23:36.100
  • What if we said, "God, I don't know
  • 00:23:36.110 --> 00:23:37.250
  • how this is gonna happen, I don't know
  • 00:23:37.260 --> 00:23:39.110
  • where this is gonna come from,
  • 00:23:39.120 --> 00:23:41.010
  • but I know that you are strong and powerful.
  • 00:23:41.020 --> 00:23:43.140
  • And I believe you can do this and I'm gonna believe you
  • 00:23:43.150 --> 00:23:45.170
  • to do it."
  • 00:23:45.180 --> 00:23:46.270
  • And by God's grace, we put him to the test.
  • 00:23:46.280 --> 00:23:49.190
  • Problems are not big or small in God's sight.
  • 00:23:49.200 --> 00:23:53.090
  • It's our perspective that needs enlarging so we can see God
  • 00:23:53.100 --> 00:23:57.110
  • as capable as responding to the faith that we have.
  • 00:23:57.120 --> 00:24:00.260
  • No matter how small and insufficient
  • 00:24:00.270 --> 00:24:03.090
  • you think your faith is.
  • 00:24:03.100 --> 00:24:05.080
  • Men and women, keep praying, keep trusting,
  • 00:24:05.090 --> 00:24:08.010
  • keep seeking the Lord.
  • 00:24:08.020 --> 00:24:09.180
  • Remember, it's the object of your faith, Almighty God,
  • 00:24:09.190 --> 00:24:12.270
  • not the size of your faith that's important.
  • 00:24:12.280 --> 00:24:15.030
  • Shift your focus from yourself to him and then go on
  • 00:24:15.040 --> 00:24:18.130
  • and ask him for great things.
  • 00:24:18.140 --> 00:24:20.240
  • male announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return

  • today's overcomer program right after this.

  • announcer: And now with one last Word for today's program,
  • 00:25:52.060 --> 00:25:54.220
  • here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:54.230 --> 00:25:56.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Remember, that you were called to be
  • 00:25:57.190 --> 00:25:59.090
  • an overcomer, you were called to walk in victory,
  • 00:25:59.100 --> 00:26:03.000
  • and strength, and peace, and love.
  • 00:26:03.010 --> 00:26:06.230
  • In this important new series, we're discovering exactly
  • 00:26:06.240 --> 00:26:09.200
  • how to live as an overcomer.
  • 00:26:09.210 --> 00:26:12.280
  • But the first and most important step of that journey is
  • 00:26:12.290 --> 00:26:16.140
  • to put your faith in the ultimate Overcomer himself,
