  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Revelation, it is known
  • 00:00:02.230 --> 00:00:06.140
  • as a book of mysterious signs and wonders.
  • 00:00:06.150 --> 00:00:11.090
  • But the prophecy contained within speaks of more
  • 00:00:11.100 --> 00:00:13.290
  • than just what is to come in the end of days.
  • 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:19.200
  • Found near the beginning of the book, Revelation contains
  • 00:00:19.210 --> 00:00:22.230
  • a collection of seven letters, dispatches from Jesus, delivered
  • 00:00:22.240 --> 00:00:27.240
  • by Revelation's human author, John.
  • 00:00:27.250 --> 00:00:31.220
  • These letters aren't long.
  • 00:00:31.230 --> 00:00:33.070
  • In fact, they're actually quite brief
  • 00:00:33.080 --> 00:00:35.100
  • and straight to the point.
  • 00:00:35.110 --> 00:00:37.070
  • The recipients?
  • 00:00:37.080 --> 00:00:39.000
  • The early Christian churches.
  • 00:00:39.010 --> 00:00:41.180
  • But while these letters spoke directly to seven churches
  • 00:00:41.190 --> 00:00:44.030
  • of antiquity, they, like the book of Revelation,
  • 00:00:44.040 --> 00:00:47.160
  • are prophetic, prophetic in that by them, Christ's words
  • 00:00:47.170 --> 00:00:51.200
  • speak to all churches through all the ages.
  • 00:00:51.210 --> 00:00:55.240
  • Seven churches, seven letters, seven messages
  • 00:00:55.250 --> 00:01:00.260
  • for today's believers, relevant words of commendation,
  • 00:01:00.270 --> 00:01:04.290
  • tender encouragement, and of warning.
  • 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:08.060
  • So join me as we look into the Bible and discover
  • 00:01:08.070 --> 00:01:11.080
  • Christ's timeless words
  • 00:01:11.090 --> 00:01:13.080
  • to his followers through the seven churches
  • 00:01:13.090 --> 00:01:16.100
  • of Revelation.
  • 00:01:16.110 --> 00:01:18.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Hello, I'm David Jeremiah.
  • 00:01:21.240 --> 00:01:23.110
  • Welcome to "Turning Point."
  • 00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:26.030
  • As a pastor, I've counseled many married couples
  • 00:01:26.040 --> 00:01:29.110
  • over the years.
  • 00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:31.110
  • Sometimes, they're surprised to discover that their love
  • 00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:34.050
  • has grown cold.
  • 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:36.100
  • And they're also surprised to learn that love must be
  • 00:01:36.110 --> 00:01:39.100
  • pursued and worked at if it is to remain vibrant.
  • 00:01:39.110 --> 00:01:42.210
  • You see, love is a choice that must be made.
  • 00:01:42.220 --> 00:01:46.150
  • And the same is true in the spiritual life.
  • 00:01:46.160 --> 00:01:50.190
  • The church at Ephesus, while commendable,
  • 00:01:50.200 --> 00:01:54.130
  • had this same problem.
  • 00:01:54.140 --> 00:01:56.140
  • They had lost their love for God.
  • 00:01:56.150 --> 00:01:59.110
  • They had become so busy serving Christ that they had lost
  • 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:04.150
  • their love for Christ.
  • 00:02:04.160 --> 00:02:07.080
  • And because that can happen to anyone, today's message
  • 00:02:07.090 --> 00:02:10.110
  • is for every Christian.
  • 00:02:10.120 --> 00:02:12.110
  • It's titled "Losing Your First Love,"
  • 00:02:12.120 --> 00:02:15.190
  • the second message in our series called
  • 00:02:15.200 --> 00:02:17.290
  • "The Seven Churches of Revelation."
  • 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:20.230

  • male announcer: Revelation is a mysterious book full of signs
  • 00:02:24.200 --> 00:02:27.030
  • and symbols, portraying things seen and unseen
  • 00:02:27.040 --> 00:02:30.110
  • in the world and those of the world to come,
  • 00:02:30.120 --> 00:02:33.070

  • 00:03:39.210 --> 00:03:41.210
  • 00:03:43.220 --> 00:03:52.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: These are real letters that were written
  • 00:03:53.290 --> 00:03:56.110
  • to real churches, that were located in real cities
  • 00:03:56.120 --> 00:04:00.210
  • in real countries.
  • 00:04:00.220 --> 00:04:02.030
  • In fact, these were churches kind of like our church.
  • 00:04:02.040 --> 00:04:05.170
  • John knew these churches.
  • 00:04:05.180 --> 00:04:07.030
  • He had visited some of them.
  • 00:04:07.040 --> 00:04:09.080
  • He knew about them.
  • 00:04:09.090 --> 00:04:10.100
  • He knew what was going on in these churches.
  • 00:04:10.110 --> 00:04:12.020
  • And so, while he was in exile, that means he was separated
  • 00:04:12.030 --> 00:04:15.120
  • from people on the isle of Patmos,
  • 00:04:15.130 --> 00:04:17.220
  • he drafted a letter to each of these churches
  • 00:04:17.230 --> 00:04:20.160
  • and spoke to them about the realities
  • 00:04:20.170 --> 00:04:23.040
  • of their congregation.
  • 00:04:23.050 --> 00:04:25.140
  • The Bible says that the Lord is the one who is searching
  • 00:04:25.150 --> 00:04:28.280
  • the churches.
  • 00:04:28.290 --> 00:04:30.120
  • The eyes of fire that are described of him
  • 00:04:30.130 --> 00:04:33.000
  • in the first chapter of Revelation, he is searching
  • 00:04:33.010 --> 00:04:35.080
  • the heart of the churches to see what they really are.
  • 00:04:35.090 --> 00:04:39.080
  • And ladies and gentlemen, it would be good, would it not,
  • 00:04:39.090 --> 00:04:41.190
  • if we could get the perspective of the head of the church
  • 00:04:41.200 --> 00:04:44.010
  • on what's going on in the church today.
  • 00:04:44.020 --> 00:04:47.150
  • Because I don't know about the rest of you,
  • 00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:48.250
  • but sometimes I really get confused.
  • 00:04:48.260 --> 00:04:51.020
  • Problems faced by modern churches could be
  • 00:04:51.030 --> 00:04:53.130
  • solved by reading the recommendations
  • 00:04:53.140 --> 00:04:55.070
  • that the Lord made to the seven churches
  • 00:04:55.080 --> 00:04:57.180
  • of Asia Minor.
  • 00:04:57.190 --> 00:04:59.110
  • It is interesting that all seven churches
  • 00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:01.180
  • got to read the short letters written to each
  • 00:05:01.190 --> 00:05:04.100
  • of the other churches since they all were contained
  • 00:05:04.110 --> 00:05:06.220
  • in this book.
  • 00:05:06.230 --> 00:05:07.270
  • So, every church found out something
  • 00:05:07.280 --> 00:05:10.010
  • about the other churches.
  • 00:05:10.020 --> 00:05:12.020
  • Prophetic scholars have studied the letters to the churches
  • 00:05:12.030 --> 00:05:15.150
  • and the condition of these churches,
  • 00:05:15.160 --> 00:05:17.100
  • and they have discovered that the seven churches
  • 00:05:17.110 --> 00:05:19.240
  • represent seven ages of history in the history
  • 00:05:19.250 --> 00:05:23.150
  • of the church.
  • 00:05:23.160 --> 00:05:24.230
  • For instance, the church at Ephesus represents
  • 00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:27.230
  • the early church that's recorded for us in the book of Acts.
  • 00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:32.070
  • What is the last church on the list?
  • 00:05:32.080 --> 00:05:35.050
  • The church of Laodicea.
  • 00:05:35.060 --> 00:05:37.210
  • And the Bible says that that church was scorned
  • 00:05:37.220 --> 00:05:40.190
  • because it was neither hot nor cold, but it was lukewarm.
  • 00:05:40.200 --> 00:05:44.210
  • And it was so disgusting to God that he said he was going
  • 00:05:44.220 --> 00:05:47.080
  • to spit it out of his mouth.
  • 00:05:47.090 --> 00:05:49.160
  • Believe it or not, that's the church that will be
  • 00:05:49.170 --> 00:05:51.110
  • on the earth when Jesus comes back to get us and take us home.
  • 00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:55.130
  • And many people believe we may be living
  • 00:05:55.140 --> 00:05:57.120
  • in the Laodicean age of the church.
  • 00:05:57.130 --> 00:05:59.270
  • You make up your own mind about that.
  • 00:05:59.280 --> 00:06:03.030
  • Now, as we begin this letter, and I'm going to go
  • 00:06:03.040 --> 00:06:05.040
  • through some of this quickly so we can spend time
  • 00:06:05.050 --> 00:06:07.050
  • where we really need to, we, first of all, notice
  • 00:06:07.060 --> 00:06:10.180
  • the destination of the letter in the first verse.
  • 00:06:10.190 --> 00:06:13.000
  • "To the angel of the church of Ephesus write."
  • 00:06:13.010 --> 00:06:18.020
  • Now, this letter is addressed to the angel of the church,
  • 00:06:18.030 --> 00:06:21.080
  • or the messenger of the church at Ephesus.
  • 00:06:21.090 --> 00:06:24.170
  • Somebody says, "Does every church have an angel?"
  • 00:06:24.180 --> 00:06:27.240
  • Yes, it's the pastor.
  • 00:06:27.250 --> 00:06:33.070
  • You think I'm kidding, don't you?
  • 00:06:33.080 --> 00:06:35.200
  • No, the word "angel" is the same word that is used
  • 00:06:35.210 --> 00:06:38.060
  • for a pastor, for one who declares the Word of God.
  • 00:06:38.070 --> 00:06:41.140
  • And so, these letters were written in the language
  • 00:06:41.150 --> 00:06:43.250
  • of the New Testament.
  • 00:06:43.260 --> 00:06:45.020
  • They wrote it and they gave it to the angel of the church,
  • 00:06:45.030 --> 00:06:48.240
  • the pastor of the church.
  • 00:06:48.250 --> 00:06:51.030
  • Ephesus itself was a cosmopolitan and cultural city
  • 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:56.010
  • filled with rich and poor alike.
  • 00:06:56.020 --> 00:06:58.280
  • It was the home to one of the seven wonders
  • 00:06:58.290 --> 00:07:01.080
  • of the world, the temple of Diana.
  • 00:07:01.090 --> 00:07:04.270
  • The temple of Diana was the theatre of immorality.
  • 00:07:04.280 --> 00:07:09.100
  • Great revenue was derived from the sale of statues
  • 00:07:09.110 --> 00:07:13.240
  • of Diana.
  • 00:07:13.250 --> 00:07:15.280
  • Prostitution was part of the religious practice
  • 00:07:15.290 --> 00:07:20.110
  • of the city.
  • 00:07:20.120 --> 00:07:23.030
  • And Paul established the church in Ephesus on his second
  • 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:26.190
  • missionary journey.
  • 00:07:26.200 --> 00:07:28.020
  • He spent 3 years there.
  • 00:07:28.030 --> 00:07:30.290
  • And the letter that we know as Ephesians was written
  • 00:07:31.000 --> 00:07:33.060
  • by Paul to the Christian church in that city.
  • 00:07:33.070 --> 00:07:36.260
  • And it was while John was living in Ephesus that he was taken
  • 00:07:36.270 --> 00:07:41.130
  • captive and he was exiled to the isle of Patmos,
  • 00:07:41.140 --> 00:07:45.210
  • where he spent his closing days, and from which he wrote
  • 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:49.050
  • the entire book of Revelation.
  • 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:52.210
  • So the letter we call, the first letter, to the angel
  • 00:07:52.220 --> 00:07:56.000
  • of the church of Ephesus was written to that kind
  • 00:07:56.010 --> 00:07:58.150
  • of a city.
  • 00:07:58.160 --> 00:07:59.130
  • You kind of get a picture of it in your mind
  • 00:07:59.140 --> 00:08:02.030
  • as I've described it.
  • 00:08:02.040 --> 00:08:03.190
  • Now, in every one of the letters before the letter is
  • 00:08:03.200 --> 00:08:06.250
  • actually begun, the writer of the letter, who is
  • 00:08:06.260 --> 00:08:10.100
  • ultimately Jesus Christ, describes himself.
  • 00:08:10.110 --> 00:08:14.010
  • In fact, all seven letters have a description of Christ,
  • 00:08:14.020 --> 00:08:17.000
  • and each description of Christ focuses in on some aspect
  • 00:08:17.010 --> 00:08:20.270
  • of who Christ is.
  • 00:08:20.280 --> 00:08:22.220
  • So notice the first verse in the second chapter.
  • 00:08:22.230 --> 00:08:25.220
  • "These things says he who holds the seven stars
  • 00:08:25.230 --> 00:08:31.090
  • in his right hand, who walks in the midst
  • 00:08:31.100 --> 00:08:34.100
  • of the seven golden lampstands."
  • 00:08:34.110 --> 00:08:37.140
  • What he is saying to this church at the very beginning is
  • 00:08:37.150 --> 00:08:40.030
  • that, no matter what their problems are, he is
  • 00:08:40.040 --> 00:08:43.100
  • the authoritative right hand of power in the midst of them.
  • 00:08:43.110 --> 00:08:47.120
  • He walks among these churches.
  • 00:08:47.130 --> 00:08:49.090
  • He holds control
  • 00:08:49.100 --> 00:08:51.120
  • of these churches.
  • 00:08:51.130 --> 00:08:52.200
  • And now, the body of the letter, we might call this the diagnosis
  • 00:08:52.210 --> 00:08:55.280
  • of the church.
  • 00:08:55.290 --> 00:08:57.010
  • Verses 2 and 3, read these words with me.
  • 00:08:57.020 --> 00:09:00.070
  • "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you
  • 00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:04.260
  • cannot bear those who are evil.
  • 00:09:04.270 --> 00:09:07.190
  • You have tested those who say they are apostles and are not.
  • 00:09:07.200 --> 00:09:11.080
  • You have found them liars, and you have persevered
  • 00:09:11.090 --> 00:09:13.150
  • and have patience, and you have labored for my name's sake
  • 00:09:13.160 --> 00:09:16.210
  • and you have not become weary."
  • 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:19.010
  • Now, that's a pretty good dossier
  • 00:09:19.020 --> 00:09:20.250
  • for a church.
  • 00:09:20.260 --> 00:09:21.270
  • Let's break it down for just a little bit and you'll
  • 00:09:21.280 --> 00:09:23.260
  • see what I mean.
  • 00:09:23.270 --> 00:09:24.250
  • First of all, the church in Ephesus was
  • 00:09:24.260 --> 00:09:27.080
  • a dynamic church.
  • 00:09:27.090 --> 00:09:29.010
  • He says, "I know your works."
  • 00:09:29.020 --> 00:09:33.010
  • We often deemphasize the importance of good works
  • 00:09:33.020 --> 00:09:36.040
  • because we don't want to water down the importance
  • 00:09:36.050 --> 00:09:38.140
  • of grace.
  • 00:09:38.150 --> 00:09:41.080
  • We know that you cannot be saved by good works.
  • 00:09:41.090 --> 00:09:43.120
  • You're saved by grace, but we also know
  • 00:09:43.130 --> 00:09:45.020
  • that once you are saved, it's all right to do
  • 00:09:45.030 --> 00:09:47.150
  • some good works.
  • 00:09:47.160 --> 00:09:48.250
  • In fact, one of the roles of the church is to stir people
  • 00:09:48.260 --> 00:09:51.100
  • up to do good works.
  • 00:09:51.110 --> 00:09:53.190
  • Well, the church at Ephesus was flat out stirred up.
  • 00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:57.020
  • They were a working church.
  • 00:09:57.030 --> 00:09:59.150
  • This church was on fire for God.
  • 00:09:59.160 --> 00:10:03.130
  • It was a dedicated church.
  • 00:10:03.140 --> 00:10:05.240
  • It says here, "I know your works, and I know
  • 00:10:05.250 --> 00:10:08.150
  • your labor."
  • 00:10:08.160 --> 00:10:09.280
  • You say, "Well, isn't that the same thing?"
  • 00:10:09.290 --> 00:10:11.170
  • No, those are two different words.
  • 00:10:11.180 --> 00:10:12.240
  • They mean two different things.
  • 00:10:12.250 --> 00:10:14.100
  • The word "labor" means to work
  • 00:10:14.110 --> 00:10:17.000
  • to the point of exhaustion.
  • 00:10:17.010 --> 00:10:19.180
  • That is, the Ephesians were paying a price to serve
  • 00:10:19.190 --> 00:10:22.120
  • the Lord.
  • 00:10:22.130 --> 00:10:23.180
  • In the church in Ephesus, there were many who were doing
  • 00:10:23.190 --> 00:10:26.010
  • the work of God, and there were many who were doing the work,
  • 00:10:26.020 --> 00:10:28.180
  • the labor.
  • 00:10:28.190 --> 00:10:29.160
  • They were pressing the limits.
  • 00:10:29.170 --> 00:10:32.050
  • You know, sometimes in our churches today,
  • 00:10:32.060 --> 00:10:34.030
  • because we have paid staff, it's easy for members to think
  • 00:10:34.040 --> 00:10:37.110
  • that everything will get done without them.
  • 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:40.190
  • The people in the Ephesian church
  • 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.080
  • didn't hesitate to serve God with their whole hearts.
  • 00:10:42.090 --> 00:10:45.160
  • They labored and they worked.
  • 00:10:45.170 --> 00:10:47.290
  • This was a good church.
  • 00:10:48.000 --> 00:10:50.160
  • The Bible also says they were determined.
  • 00:10:50.170 --> 00:10:53.240
  • Not only dynamic and dedicated, they were determined.
  • 00:10:53.250 --> 00:10:56.100
  • It says, "And you have persevered and you have
  • 00:10:56.110 --> 00:10:59.170
  • patience."
  • 00:10:59.180 --> 00:11:01.020
  • The word "patience" occurs twice with reference to the church
  • 00:11:01.030 --> 00:11:03.290
  • in Ephesus, once in verse 2 concerning their service,
  • 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:07.040
  • and again in verse 3 concerning
  • 00:11:07.050 --> 00:11:09.040
  • their suffering.
  • 00:11:09.050 --> 00:11:10.160
  • This is the kind of patience that endures, but maintains
  • 00:11:10.170 --> 00:11:14.180
  • a forward motion.
  • 00:11:14.190 --> 00:11:16.220
  • This was patience as they served and as they suffered
  • 00:11:16.230 --> 00:11:19.150
  • for the sake of the gospel.
  • 00:11:19.160 --> 00:11:21.040
  • And this was a disciplined church,
  • 00:11:21.050 --> 00:11:23.130
  • "That you cannot bear evil."
  • 00:11:23.140 --> 00:11:26.210
  • The church at Ephesus was a church which would not allow
  • 00:11:26.220 --> 00:11:29.230
  • evil in its midst.
  • 00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:31.160
  • They would not tolerate evil, and they practiced
  • 00:11:31.170 --> 00:11:33.270
  • church discipline when it was necessary.
  • 00:11:33.280 --> 00:11:36.140
  • They were patient when it came to service
  • 00:11:36.150 --> 00:11:38.180
  • and suffering, but they were not patient when it came to sinning.
  • 00:11:38.190 --> 00:11:43.030
  • They stood for the truth and for righteousness.
  • 00:11:43.040 --> 00:11:46.240
  • And they were a discerning church.
  • 00:11:46.250 --> 00:11:49.210
  • Notice the next phrase, "And you have tested those who say they
  • 00:11:49.220 --> 00:11:53.050
  • are apostles and are not, and have found them
  • 00:11:53.060 --> 00:11:56.150
  • to be liars."
  • 00:11:56.160 --> 00:11:58.200
  • Now, what's that all about?
  • 00:11:58.210 --> 00:12:00.070
  • During the early church, there were some who went around
  • 00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:03.210
  • from the churches that had been established
  • 00:12:03.220 --> 00:12:05.180
  • and claimed that they had been sent to the church
  • 00:12:05.190 --> 00:12:08.270
  • by 1 of the 12 apostles.
  • 00:12:08.280 --> 00:12:12.040
  • That they were, quote unquote, "in apostolic succession,"
  • 00:12:12.050 --> 00:12:16.050
  • so to speak.
  • 00:12:16.060 --> 00:12:17.260
  • That the apostles had laid their hands on them and said,
  • 00:12:17.270 --> 00:12:20.120
  • "You go and speak on our behalf of the churches,"
  • 00:12:20.130 --> 00:12:23.050
  • which of course did not happen.
  • 00:12:23.060 --> 00:12:24.290
  • But they would use the apostle's name to gain
  • 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.100
  • an entrance into the church.
  • 00:12:27.110 --> 00:12:28.230
  • And then they'd come in with all their crazy doctrine.
  • 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:31.250
  • The Bible says that when they came to the church in Ephesus,
  • 00:12:31.260 --> 00:12:35.080
  • the people in Ephesus saw them for what they were,
  • 00:12:35.090 --> 00:12:38.100
  • and they would not allow them in the church.
  • 00:12:38.110 --> 00:12:41.000
  • "You have tested those who say they are apostles
  • 00:12:41.010 --> 00:12:43.260
  • and they are not, and you found them out to be liars."
  • 00:12:43.270 --> 00:12:47.120
  • And Paul had warned them that such a thing would happen.
  • 00:12:47.130 --> 00:12:49.280
  • Do you remember when he gave the Ephesian elders
  • 00:12:49.290 --> 00:12:52.170
  • their final lecture in the 20th chapter of Acts,
  • 00:12:52.180 --> 00:12:55.020
  • do you remember what he said to them?
  • 00:12:55.030 --> 00:12:56.170
  • Listen, he said, "I know this, that after my departure,
  • 00:12:56.180 --> 00:13:01.060
  • savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing
  • 00:13:01.070 --> 00:13:04.150
  • the flock."
  • 00:13:04.160 --> 00:13:07.180
  • And the Ephesian elders didn't forget that, they remembered it.
  • 00:13:07.190 --> 00:13:10.080
  • And when these people came, saying, "Oh, we're
  • 00:13:10.090 --> 00:13:12.020
  • from the apostles," when they weren't anywhere near
  • 00:13:12.030 --> 00:13:14.120
  • the apostles, they sorted it out and said, "No, not here."
  • 00:13:14.130 --> 00:13:20.030
  • Do you see that's how we should all be?
  • 00:13:20.040 --> 00:13:22.130
  • We should care about the doctrine
  • 00:13:22.140 --> 00:13:24.130
  • of our church.
  • 00:13:24.140 --> 00:13:25.200
  • We should ask God not to let false doctrine get in among us
  • 00:13:25.210 --> 00:13:28.290
  • and sow discord in our ranks.
  • 00:13:29.000 --> 00:13:30.270
  • Well, this church in Ephesus was like that.
  • 00:13:30.280 --> 00:13:33.150
  • They were discerning.
  • 00:13:33.160 --> 00:13:35.130
  • But I want you to know that while this church
  • 00:13:35.140 --> 00:13:37.040
  • was a dynamic church, and it was a dedicated church,
  • 00:13:37.050 --> 00:13:40.100
  • and it was a determined church, and it was a disciplined church,
  • 00:13:40.110 --> 00:13:44.010
  • and it was a discerning church, it was also
  • 00:13:44.020 --> 00:13:47.140
  • a declining church.
  • 00:13:47.150 --> 00:13:50.000
  • You say, "Pastor, how could that be?
  • 00:13:50.010 --> 00:13:52.120
  • I've never heard of a church with all of those things
  • 00:13:52.130 --> 00:13:55.250
  • so positive.
  • 00:13:55.260 --> 00:13:57.050
  • I mean, if you're going to write up a church,
  • 00:13:57.060 --> 00:13:58.260
  • write this one up.
  • 00:13:58.270 --> 00:13:59.220
  • It's a great church."
  • 00:13:59.230 --> 00:14:02.010
  • But look down at your Bibles and notice what it says
  • 00:14:02.020 --> 00:14:05.060
  • in verse 4.
  • 00:14:05.070 --> 00:14:07.110
  • "Nevertheless I have somewhat against you,
  • 00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:12.100
  • because you have left your first love."
  • 00:14:12.110 --> 00:14:18.030
  • Now, just let that sink in for a moment.
  • 00:14:18.040 --> 00:14:22.040
  • Outwardly, the church was a model church.
  • 00:14:22.050 --> 00:14:26.140
  • But Jesus saw past all of this stuff we've
  • 00:14:26.150 --> 00:14:29.260
  • talked about so far.
  • 00:14:29.270 --> 00:14:31.150
  • He saw past it all, and he recognized that this church had
  • 00:14:31.160 --> 00:14:35.230
  • heart trouble.
  • 00:14:35.240 --> 00:14:38.080
  • They had left their first love.
  • 00:14:38.090 --> 00:14:40.140
  • They had fallen from the early heights
  • 00:14:40.150 --> 00:14:42.110
  • of devotion to Christ, which they had climbed.
  • 00:14:42.120 --> 00:14:46.060
  • Their first flush of ecstasy had passed.
  • 00:14:46.070 --> 00:14:49.140
  • The early devotion to Christ had cooled.
  • 00:14:49.150 --> 00:14:52.070
  • They had been in love with him, but they had fallen out of love
  • 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:55.210
  • with him.
  • 00:14:55.220 --> 00:14:57.230
  • You say, "Well, how did they do all of these works
  • 00:14:57.240 --> 00:15:00.020
  • if they weren't in love with Jesus?"
  • 00:15:00.030 --> 00:15:01.170
  • They just did these works like you would do works
  • 00:15:01.180 --> 00:15:03.240
  • in any organization.
  • 00:15:03.250 --> 00:15:05.050
  • Did you know that you can do ministry and not even have
  • 00:15:05.060 --> 00:15:08.180
  • a relationship with Jesus?
  • 00:15:08.190 --> 00:15:11.030
  • You can figure out what everybody expects you
  • 00:15:11.040 --> 00:15:12.260
  • to do, go through the motions, and you can do it.
  • 00:15:12.270 --> 00:15:15.240
  • And it gets done a lot of places like that.
  • 00:15:15.250 --> 00:15:19.000
  • The Bible says they lost their first love.
  • 00:15:19.010 --> 00:15:21.120
  • What is that? What is first love?
  • 00:15:21.130 --> 00:15:23.090
  • It's the devotion to Christ that so often characterizes
  • 00:15:23.100 --> 00:15:26.210
  • the new believer: fervent, personal, uninhibited, excited,
  • 00:15:26.220 --> 00:15:30.270
  • openly displayed honeymoon love for the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:15:30.280 --> 00:15:38.040
  • Love is the first mark of a true and living church.
  • 00:15:38.050 --> 00:15:42.250
  • Indeed, it is not a living church at all
  • 00:15:42.260 --> 00:15:45.030
  • unless it is a loving church.
  • 00:15:45.040 --> 00:15:47.190
  • Just 30 years earlier, the Apostle Paul had ended
  • 00:15:47.200 --> 00:15:52.040
  • his letter to the Ephesians with these words,
  • 00:15:52.050 --> 00:15:55.000
  • "Grace be with you all who love our Lord Jesus Christ
  • 00:15:55.010 --> 00:15:59.180
  • in sincerity."
  • 00:15:59.190 --> 00:16:00.260
  • And we don't know how long it took them to fall out of love
  • 00:16:00.270 --> 00:16:04.060
  • with Jesus, but it was less than 30 years.
  • 00:16:04.070 --> 00:16:07.030
  • Because when he wrote this letter, they were loving
  • 00:16:07.040 --> 00:16:09.100
  • the Lord Jesus sincerely.
  • 00:16:09.110 --> 00:16:11.210
  • By the time John writes this letter, they had fallen
  • 00:16:11.220 --> 00:16:16.080
  • out of love with the Lord.
  • 00:16:16.090 --> 00:16:18.160
  • They had experienced a slow drift
  • 00:16:18.170 --> 00:16:20.240
  • in the wrong direction.
  • 00:16:20.250 --> 00:16:24.210
  • So, what about us?
  • 00:16:24.220 --> 00:16:27.040
  • What about our church?
  • 00:16:27.050 --> 00:16:28.290
  • Have we lost our first love?
  • 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:31.050
  • Do we love Jesus as we once did, and do we love people
  • 00:16:31.060 --> 00:16:33.250
  • he has instructed us to love?
  • 00:16:33.260 --> 00:16:36.050
  • First love doesn't care what others think
  • 00:16:36.060 --> 00:16:38.020
  • about our enthusiasm.
  • 00:16:38.030 --> 00:16:39.100
  • First love does not worry that we will be thought to be
  • 00:16:39.110 --> 00:16:42.150
  • fanatics.
  • 00:16:42.160 --> 00:16:44.000
  • First love just loves.
  • 00:16:44.010 --> 00:16:47.050
  • First love cares only about one thing.
  • 00:16:47.060 --> 00:16:53.010
  • Now, this is a pretty challenging passage
  • 00:16:53.020 --> 00:16:56.030
  • of Scripture, but I am so glad it doesn't end here
  • 00:16:56.040 --> 00:16:59.160
  • because here, we're going to find out what you do
  • 00:16:59.170 --> 00:17:01.080
  • if you've fallen out of love
  • 00:17:01.090 --> 00:17:03.080
  • with the Lord, if you feel like your life is cold
  • 00:17:03.090 --> 00:17:06.000
  • where it used to be warm.
  • 00:17:06.010 --> 00:17:07.170
  • What do you do?
  • 00:17:07.180 --> 00:17:09.070
  • And it's real simple.
  • 00:17:09.080 --> 00:17:10.120
  • There's a formula here right in the text,
  • 00:17:10.130 --> 00:17:12.050
  • and I want to show you three exhortations.
  • 00:17:12.060 --> 00:17:14.160
  • Notice, first of all, you need to remember.
  • 00:17:14.170 --> 00:17:16.240
  • It says, "Remember therefore
  • 00:17:17.190 --> 00:17:20.030
  • from where you have fallen."
  • 00:17:20.040 --> 00:17:24.040
  • How many of you know that restoration always begins
  • 00:17:24.050 --> 00:17:26.290
  • with remembering, meditating on what your relationship
  • 00:17:27.000 --> 00:17:30.020
  • with Christ was like when you were first saved?
  • 00:17:30.030 --> 00:17:34.120
  • Go back and take a snapshot of that.
  • 00:17:34.130 --> 00:17:36.050
  • Take a mental focus of that.
  • 00:17:36.060 --> 00:17:38.010
  • Remembering how you used to witness for him,
  • 00:17:38.020 --> 00:17:41.030
  • remembering how you used to bring people to church
  • 00:17:41.040 --> 00:17:43.070
  • with you, and you would try to make sure you had someone
  • 00:17:43.080 --> 00:17:45.150
  • coming to church with you every week.
  • 00:17:45.160 --> 00:17:47.100
  • Remembering what it was like to lead someone to Christ,
  • 00:17:47.110 --> 00:17:49.240
  • or to see someone come forward in a service
  • 00:17:49.250 --> 00:17:51.250
  • that you had invited, and they heard the gospel,
  • 00:17:51.260 --> 00:17:54.010
  • and they got saved.
  • 00:17:54.020 --> 00:17:55.060
  • Or remembering as you heard their baptismal testimony,
  • 00:17:55.070 --> 00:17:57.180
  • that God gave you the opportunity to have
  • 00:17:57.190 --> 00:17:59.170
  • some influence in the life of that person, and how thrilled
  • 00:17:59.180 --> 00:18:02.140
  • you were about it.
  • 00:18:02.150 --> 00:18:04.140
  • The first thing you need to do is remember.
  • 00:18:04.150 --> 00:18:08.170
  • And then you need to repent.
  • 00:18:08.180 --> 00:18:13.020
  • That's the second word.
  • 00:18:13.030 --> 00:18:14.260
  • "Remember therefore from where you have fallen,
  • 00:18:14.270 --> 00:18:17.100
  • and repent."
  • 00:18:17.110 --> 00:18:19.040
  • Now, repentance means changing your mind and turning to go
  • 00:18:19.050 --> 00:18:22.230
  • in the opposite direction.
  • 00:18:22.240 --> 00:18:24.180
  • If you have left your first love, you must turn
  • 00:18:24.190 --> 00:18:26.210
  • and head back toward the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:18:26.220 --> 00:18:29.060
  • This is a choice, this is an act of will.
  • 00:18:29.070 --> 00:18:32.040
  • So if you've grown cold to the Lord in your heart,
  • 00:18:32.050 --> 00:18:34.260
  • I can tell you it's had an impact on your life,
  • 00:18:34.270 --> 00:18:37.230
  • and some stuff has slipped into your life that you wish
  • 00:18:37.240 --> 00:18:39.210
  • weren't there, and you're ashamed that it's there, and you
  • 00:18:39.220 --> 00:18:42.030
  • hope nobody knows it's there.
  • 00:18:42.040 --> 00:18:43.290
  • So what do you do if you want to get back to that first love
  • 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:47.170
  • experience?
  • 00:18:47.180 --> 00:18:48.260
  • You repent.
  • 00:18:48.270 --> 00:18:50.020
  • Repent means stop doing that.
  • 00:18:50.030 --> 00:18:53.110
  • Quit doing it, get away from it.
  • 00:18:53.120 --> 00:18:55.280
  • Whatever that means to you, you know what it means.
  • 00:18:55.290 --> 00:18:57.260
  • I don't have to draw you a picture.
  • 00:18:57.270 --> 00:19:01.230
  • And then the last one is really interesting.
  • 00:19:01.240 --> 00:19:03.200
  • The first one is to remember where you used to be
  • 00:19:03.210 --> 00:19:05.280
  • when you were in love with the Lord
  • 00:19:05.290 --> 00:19:07.180
  • like you should be.
  • 00:19:07.190 --> 00:19:08.270
  • And then repent, and go back, and do the first works.
  • 00:19:08.280 --> 00:19:11.260
  • Notice the third thing is to repeat, go back and do
  • 00:19:11.270 --> 00:19:15.080
  • the first works.
  • 00:19:15.090 --> 00:19:16.130
  • I love this word "repeat."
  • 00:19:16.140 --> 00:19:18.060
  • This means that the way you get back to the way it was,
  • 00:19:18.070 --> 00:19:21.180
  • now that you remembered the way it was, is you go back
  • 00:19:21.190 --> 00:19:25.110
  • and you do the first works.
  • 00:19:25.120 --> 00:19:32.060
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:19:32.070 --> 00:19:34.130
  • Well, what was it like for you when you first became
  • 00:19:34.140 --> 00:19:36.270
  • a Christian?
  • 00:19:36.280 --> 00:19:37.220
  • Did you read your Bible?
  • 00:19:37.230 --> 00:19:39.070
  • Well, yeah, well, why don't you go back and do that again?
  • 00:19:39.080 --> 00:19:42.050
  • Did you come to church all excited?
  • 00:19:42.060 --> 00:19:43.160
  • Well, just come and, if you're not excited, act excited
  • 00:19:43.170 --> 00:19:45.200
  • when you walk in the door.
  • 00:19:45.210 --> 00:19:47.210
  • Maybe God will help you to get excited.
  • 00:19:47.220 --> 00:19:49.100
  • What the Bible says is, in order to restore where you were,
  • 00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:52.060
  • you have to go back and do what you did.
  • 00:19:52.070 --> 00:19:54.010
  • Love is really a verb.
  • 00:19:54.020 --> 00:19:56.050
  • It's an action word.
  • 00:19:56.060 --> 00:19:57.070
  • And the way you come back to where you should be
  • 00:19:57.080 --> 00:19:59.120
  • is you go back to where you were,
  • 00:19:59.130 --> 00:20:01.050
  • and you start doing the things you used to do.
  • 00:20:01.060 --> 00:20:03.140
  • And, all of a sudden, you'll discover that that love
  • 00:20:03.150 --> 00:20:06.080
  • that kind of slipped away has started to come back.
  • 00:20:06.090 --> 00:20:10.110
  • And you begin to remember what it was like
  • 00:20:10.120 --> 00:20:12.090
  • to really be in love with the Lord Jesus Christ
  • 00:20:12.100 --> 00:20:15.110
  • and want to serve him with all of your heart.
  • 00:20:15.120 --> 00:20:18.170
  • Most of you could make a list of first things.
  • 00:20:18.180 --> 00:20:21.170
  • You know what they were.
  • 00:20:21.180 --> 00:20:23.180
  • Just think about it, what are the things that I used to do
  • 00:20:23.190 --> 00:20:25.240
  • when I first became a Christian I don't do anymore?
  • 00:20:25.250 --> 00:20:28.110
  • Go back and start doing them.
  • 00:20:28.120 --> 00:20:30.050
  • And by the way, this is a really good formula
  • 00:20:30.060 --> 00:20:33.190
  • for a marriage that's in trouble as well.
  • 00:20:33.200 --> 00:20:35.270
  • Did you know that?
  • 00:20:35.280 --> 00:20:37.240
  • When a marriage gets in trouble and you start realizing
  • 00:20:37.250 --> 00:20:40.020
  • that your relationship has grown cold,
  • 00:20:40.030 --> 00:20:42.070
  • you should remember what it used to be like.
  • 00:20:42.080 --> 00:20:49.180
  • And you should repent that you let it get to the place
  • 00:20:49.190 --> 00:20:54.030
  • where it is.
  • 00:20:54.040 --> 00:20:55.270
  • And then you should repeat.
  • 00:20:55.280 --> 00:20:59.080
  • You should go back and do the first works.
  • 00:20:59.090 --> 00:21:01.080
  • Maybe we don't have the feeling we ought to have.
  • 00:21:01.090 --> 00:21:03.110
  • Let's just go back and let's act like we used to act when we were
  • 00:21:03.120 --> 00:21:06.120
  • really, really, really in love."
  • 00:21:06.130 --> 00:21:10.250
  • And then, all of a sudden, you begin to realize,
  • 00:21:10.260 --> 00:21:13.030
  • "I really do love this person.
  • 00:21:13.040 --> 00:21:15.280
  • How did I let this coldness get into my relationship?"
  • 00:21:15.290 --> 00:21:22.030
  • Now, Christ concludes his admonition
  • 00:21:22.040 --> 00:21:24.050
  • to the Ephesian church with a sober warning.
  • 00:21:24.060 --> 00:21:27.190
  • Read what it says.
  • 00:21:27.200 --> 00:21:29.040
  • He says, "If you do not do this, I will remove your candlestick."
  • 00:21:29.050 --> 00:21:38.180
  • What that means is Jesus said, "If you don't get back to loving
  • 00:21:38.190 --> 00:21:41.120
  • me like you should, not just going through the work
  • 00:21:41.130 --> 00:21:44.160
  • of doing church, but loving me,
  • 00:21:44.170 --> 00:21:46.240
  • what will happen is that your influence,
  • 00:21:46.250 --> 00:21:50.200
  • your candlestick will be snuffed out, and your outreach
  • 00:21:50.210 --> 00:21:54.210
  • as a church will be gone."
  • 00:21:54.220 --> 00:21:57.100
  • Christian tradition holds that after his release
  • 00:21:57.110 --> 00:22:01.030
  • from Patmos and, in an extreme old age,
  • 00:22:01.040 --> 00:22:04.200
  • John used to be carried into the place where the church
  • 00:22:04.210 --> 00:22:08.070
  • of Ephesus assembled.
  • 00:22:08.080 --> 00:22:10.140
  • And the brethren would hear him say, as he was propped
  • 00:22:10.150 --> 00:22:13.170
  • up into the pulpit, "Little children,
  • 00:22:13.180 --> 00:22:16.080
  • love one another."
  • 00:22:16.090 --> 00:22:20.040
  • Did they remember what they had lost?
  • 00:22:20.050 --> 00:22:21.250
  • Did they recover that first love?
  • 00:22:21.260 --> 00:22:24.050
  • Let history tell the answer.
  • 00:22:24.060 --> 00:22:26.110
  • Over that once famous city, the word "Ichabod"
  • 00:22:26.120 --> 00:22:29.020
  • must be written, for the glory departed.
  • 00:22:29.030 --> 00:22:31.190
  • Ephesus, whose harbor could accommodate
  • 00:22:31.200 --> 00:22:33.270
  • the finest seagoing vessel and whose highways radiated
  • 00:22:33.280 --> 00:22:37.280
  • out to all the cities of Asia Minor and beyond,
  • 00:22:37.290 --> 00:22:41.140
  • Ephesus is a ruin.
  • 00:22:41.150 --> 00:22:44.090
  • There is no church.
  • 00:22:44.100 --> 00:22:46.180
  • The great golden lampstand has been removed.
  • 00:22:46.190 --> 00:22:52.280
  • God has given us an incredible opportunity
  • 00:22:52.290 --> 00:22:56.090
  • to influence the world for Jesus Christ.
  • 00:22:56.100 --> 00:22:58.220
  • But ladies and gentlemen, if we get caught up in our statistics,
  • 00:22:58.230 --> 00:23:02.000
  • and we begin to think that all the stuff we're doing
  • 00:23:02.010 --> 00:23:04.120
  • is what really matters, and we quit loving
  • 00:23:04.130 --> 00:23:07.050
  • the Lord Jesus Christ with a heart
  • 00:23:07.060 --> 00:23:09.020
  • like a new believer, one of these days,
  • 00:23:09.030 --> 00:23:11.070
  • they will come to find the church and it will not
  • 00:23:11.080 --> 00:23:13.280
  • be here.
  • 00:23:13.290 --> 00:23:15.230
  • I remember reading a very interesting
  • 00:23:15.240 --> 00:23:17.240
  • little statement that I never have been able
  • 00:23:17.250 --> 00:23:19.200
  • to forget.
  • 00:23:19.210 --> 00:23:22.060
  • Here's the statement this man made who realized he was
  • 00:23:22.070 --> 00:23:25.210
  • where we are in this lesson.
  • 00:23:25.220 --> 00:23:28.180
  • He said, "I was on my way to the Savior, and I ran
  • 00:23:28.190 --> 00:23:33.020
  • into serving.
  • 00:23:33.030 --> 00:23:35.190
  • And I got into serving, and I never got to the Savior."
  • 00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:41.120
  • And I trust that I will not forget in my own life,
  • 00:23:41.130 --> 00:23:45.020
  • and you will not forget in yours, that the Lord God
  • 00:23:45.030 --> 00:23:48.070
  • of heaven loves you with an everlasting love.
  • 00:23:48.080 --> 00:23:51.080
  • And the best thing you can give back to him is to return
  • 00:23:51.090 --> 00:23:54.280
  • that love to him.
  • 00:23:54.290 --> 00:23:56.110
  • You love him because he first loved you.
  • 00:23:56.120 --> 00:23:58.290
  • You love him by keeping his commandments,
  • 00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:01.000
  • by spending time with him, getting to know him, expressing
  • 00:24:01.010 --> 00:24:03.260
  • your worship for him.
  • 00:24:03.270 --> 00:24:07.080
  • And that needs to be the first focus
  • 00:24:07.090 --> 00:24:09.070
  • of all of our lives.
  • 00:24:09.080 --> 00:24:10.290
  • And I guarantee you that when you do that,
  • 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:13.050
  • when you have that kind of love relationship
  • 00:24:13.060 --> 00:24:14.250
  • with the Lord, he will enable you as the overflow of your life
  • 00:24:14.260 --> 00:24:18.240
  • to accomplish more than you could ever do if you're
  • 00:24:18.250 --> 00:24:22.030
  • just trying to do it in your own strength
  • 00:24:22.040 --> 00:24:24.120
  • and in your own energy.

  • program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:58.000 --> 00:26:00.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Somewhere along the way, every person
  • 00:26:01.110 --> 00:26:03.280
  • experiences the loss of love.
  • 00:26:03.290 --> 00:26:06.210
  • Hopefully, you learned today how that happens,
  • 00:26:06.220 --> 00:26:09.280
  • and how to rekindle the fire of love.
  • 00:26:09.290 --> 00:26:13.110
  • But remember, you can't lose what you never had.
  • 00:26:13.120 --> 00:26:17.080
  • If you don't have a vibrant and fruitful love
  • 00:26:17.090 --> 00:26:20.030
  • for Jesus Christ, perhaps you have never met him.
  • 00:26:20.040 --> 00:26:23.290
  • And if that's the case, I'd like to help you
  • 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.120
  • fall in love with Christ, the one who loves you so much
  • 00:26:26.130 --> 00:26:30.000
  • that he died for you.
  • 00:26:30.010 --> 00:26:31.160
  • As an encouragement, I would like to send you
  • 00:26:31.170 --> 00:26:33.280
  • our booklet called "Your Greatest Turning Point,"
  • 00:26:33.290 --> 00:26:36.090
  • and our monthly devotional magazine called
  • 00:26:36.100 --> 00:26:39.090
  • "Turning Points."
  • 00:26:39.100 --> 00:26:41.040
  • These two gifts have helped many people understand
  • 00:26:41.050 --> 00:26:44.050
  • what it means to begin a faith relationship
  • 00:26:44.060 --> 00:26:46.230
  • with Christ.

  • 00:26:57.050 --> 00:26:58.280
  • Dr. Jeremiah: What's going to happen in our culture,
  • 00:26:59.100 --> 00:27:01.130
  • what's going to happen in our economy, what's going
  • 00:27:01.140 --> 00:27:03.180
  • to happen in our faith?
  • 00:27:03.190 --> 00:27:04.280
  • If we're not careful, we can allow our lives to be run
  • 00:27:04.290 --> 00:27:09.020
  • by fear.
  • 00:27:09.030 --> 00:27:11.020
  • And the Lord Jesus comes to us in the midst of our troubles
  • 00:27:11.030 --> 00:27:13.230
