  • Dr. David Jeremiah: As we've been dealing with fear,
  • 00:00:02.090 --> 00:00:03.140
  • we've begun each message with a short humorous opening.
  • 00:00:03.150 --> 00:00:06.080
  • You know, sometimes it's easier to talk about our fears
  • 00:00:06.090 --> 00:00:09.240
  • when we're able to laugh about them.
  • 00:00:09.250 --> 00:00:12.110
  • Through those dramatic presentations and our study
  • 00:00:12.120 --> 00:00:15.030
  • in God's Word, we've identified nine fears that we need to
  • 00:00:15.040 --> 00:00:18.280
  • conquer through faith in order to grow in Christ and experience
  • 00:00:18.290 --> 00:00:23.020
  • greater intimacy with God.
  • 00:00:23.030 --> 00:00:24.150
  • Instead of discussing the fears that hinder our relationship
  • 00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:29.050
  • with God, I want to talk about a fear that actually improves
  • 00:00:29.060 --> 00:00:33.210
  • that relationship: the fear of God himself.
  • 00:00:33.220 --> 00:00:37.190
  • The fear of God is mentioned in over 120 passages
  • 00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:42.080
  • in the Old and New Testament.
  • 00:00:42.090 --> 00:00:44.020
  • Maybe you've read them and you're wondering to yourself,
  • 00:00:44.030 --> 00:00:47.140
  • "Am I missing out on something?
  • 00:00:47.150 --> 00:00:49.170
  • I mean, I love God, I worship him, I pray to him, I trust him,
  • 00:00:49.180 --> 00:00:53.200
  • I obey him, but I really don't know what it means to fear him."
  • 00:00:53.210 --> 00:00:58.030
  • Well, today, I'm going to spend our time shedding light on that
  • 00:00:58.040 --> 00:01:02.260
  • fear because it is clear from the Bible that it's important to
  • 00:01:02.270 --> 00:01:07.210
  • God and so it should be important to us as well.
  • 00:01:07.220 --> 00:01:11.070
  • In fact, God makes dozens of promises to those who fear him.
  • 00:01:11.080 --> 00:01:16.070
  • I'll explore some of these promises as we consider
  • 00:01:16.080 --> 00:01:19.120
  • "Deity: The Fear of God."
  • 00:01:19.130 --> 00:01:22.010
  • It's the final message in our series, "What Are You Afraid Of?
  • 00:01:22.020 --> 00:01:27.140
  • Facing down Your Fears with Faith."
  • 00:01:27.150 --> 00:01:30.130
  • All of this and more on today's edition of "Turning Point."

  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:01:36.260 --> 00:01:39.190
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:42.290
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:45.220
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:01:45.230 --> 00:01:47.100
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:01:47.110 --> 00:01:50.190
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power
  • 00:01:50.200 --> 00:01:54.060
  • and of love and of a sound mind.
  • 00:01:54.070 --> 00:01:56.160

  • Dr. Jeremiah: What I'm about to tell you about today
  • 00:02:30.070 --> 00:02:33.050
  • in many respects is a life-changing concept that
  • 00:02:33.060 --> 00:02:37.280
  • if you get your arms around it, if you get this in your heart,
  • 00:02:37.290 --> 00:02:41.240
  • it will change the way you do life.
  • 00:02:41.250 --> 00:02:45.260
  • It will change the way you do your faith.
  • 00:02:45.270 --> 00:02:48.290
  • And in the understanding of this fear, you will gain power
  • 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:54.140
  • over all of the other fears that come into your life.
  • 00:02:54.150 --> 00:02:58.050
  • I am going to try to help you learn how
  • 00:02:58.060 --> 00:03:02.290
  • to fear and I'm going to encourage you to fear.
  • 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:07.040
  • Because today I wanna talk with you about the fear of God.
  • 00:03:07.050 --> 00:03:14.030
  • In fact, there are two ways the Bible tells us that we fear God.
  • 00:03:14.040 --> 00:03:19.180
  • Two ways.
  • 00:03:19.190 --> 00:03:20.280
  • First of all, we fear God with awesome dread.
  • 00:03:20.290 --> 00:03:25.080
  • Awesome dread.
  • 00:03:25.090 --> 00:03:26.180
  • You say, "Pastor Jeremiah, where does that come from?"
  • 00:03:26.190 --> 00:03:28.280
  • Well, do you know that the first time the word "fear" appears in
  • 00:03:28.290 --> 00:03:32.200
  • the Bible it appears in the book of Genesis chapter 3
  • 00:03:32.210 --> 00:03:36.280
  • and verse 10?
  • 00:03:36.290 --> 00:03:38.080
  • After Adam and Eve sinned and God drew near, Adam hid himself
  • 00:03:38.090 --> 00:03:44.010
  • from God's presence and he explained, Genesis 3:10: "God, I
  • 00:03:44.020 --> 00:03:48.150
  • heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was
  • 00:03:48.160 --> 00:03:52.260
  • naked; and I hid myself."
  • 00:03:52.270 --> 00:03:55.190
  • And I wanna make this point that I am sure that what Adam felt at
  • 00:03:55.200 --> 00:03:59.150
  • that moment was much more than awe and reverence for his God.
  • 00:03:59.160 --> 00:04:04.180
  • He was stone cold afraid.
  • 00:04:04.190 --> 00:04:08.060
  • Exactly as he should have been.
  • 00:04:08.070 --> 00:04:11.070
  • God had warned him that if he were to eat of the forbidden
  • 00:04:11.080 --> 00:04:13.220
  • tree he would die.
  • 00:04:13.230 --> 00:04:16.030
  • He had done what he had been told not to do and now God
  • 00:04:16.040 --> 00:04:20.220
  • was looking for him.
  • 00:04:20.230 --> 00:04:22.230
  • Now, the reason I bring this up is because there are many
  • 00:04:23.220 --> 00:04:25.280
  • Christians today who seem to think that because of
  • 00:04:25.290 --> 00:04:28.230
  • the incarnation and the Lord Jesus Christ
  • 00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:30.280
  • coming as the God-man
  • 00:04:30.290 --> 00:04:32.170
  • we have eliminated the need for any fear of God.
  • 00:04:32.180 --> 00:04:35.290
  • Those who adopt this mindset as the whole truth often describe
  • 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:39.130
  • Jesus as a gentle, compassionate, and loving person
  • 00:04:39.140 --> 00:04:42.230
  • and he was and he is all of those things but he is more.
  • 00:04:42.240 --> 00:04:52.110
  • He is the fearsome Jesus who took a whip and singlehandedly
  • 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:56.000
  • drove from the temple a mass of thieving merchants.
  • 00:04:56.010 --> 00:05:01.000
  • You can be sure that these men felt fear.
  • 00:05:01.010 --> 00:05:03.290
  • Awe and dread are natural responses of the imperfect
  • 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:08.190
  • to the perfect, of the marred to the beautiful,
  • 00:05:08.200 --> 00:05:12.250
  • and of the contaminated to the pure.
  • 00:05:12.260 --> 00:05:17.040
  • When Jesus walked into the temple that day, they
  • 00:05:17.050 --> 00:05:19.240
  • were not afraid of him because he had a whip in his hand.
  • 00:05:19.250 --> 00:05:22.210
  • They were afraid of him because the presence of Almighty God
  • 00:05:22.220 --> 00:05:26.000
  • was in their midst.
  • 00:05:26.010 --> 00:05:27.250
  • In the words of the prophet Isaiah, Isaiah 8:13: "The Lord
  • 00:05:27.260 --> 00:05:32.080
  • of hosts, him you shall fear, him you shall hallow;
  • 00:05:32.090 --> 00:05:36.220
  • let him be your fear, and let him be your dread."
  • 00:05:36.230 --> 00:05:40.250
  • Now, whatever you may want to think about the fear of God,
  • 00:05:40.260 --> 00:05:43.130
  • let me just put it on the table right up front, there is a sense
  • 00:05:43.140 --> 00:05:46.230
  • in which you and I need to cultivate a healthy fear of God.
  • 00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:52.050
  • You say, "What does it mean to fear God?"
  • 00:05:52.060 --> 00:05:57.070
  • It means awesome dread.
  • 00:05:57.080 --> 00:06:00.080
  • But there's another way that we fear God and this is the way we
  • 00:06:00.090 --> 00:06:03.050
  • are more comfortable with.
  • 00:06:03.060 --> 00:06:04.150
  • This is what we might call astonished devotion.
  • 00:06:04.160 --> 00:06:07.200
  • The Bible tells us that, as Christians, this is to also be
  • 00:06:07.210 --> 00:06:11.160
  • a part of our lives.
  • 00:06:11.170 --> 00:06:13.030
  • In fact, Philippians says: "My beloved brethren,
  • 00:06:13.040 --> 00:06:15.100
  • work out your salvation with," what?
  • 00:06:15.110 --> 00:06:17.110
  • "Fear and trembling."
  • 00:06:17.120 --> 00:06:21.200
  • 1 Peter says: "Conduct yourselves throughout the time
  • 00:06:21.210 --> 00:06:24.060
  • of your stay here in fear."
  • 00:06:24.070 --> 00:06:27.230
  • For active followers of Jesus Christ,
  • 00:06:27.240 --> 00:06:32.090
  • this concept is the most meaningful for everyday living.
  • 00:06:32.100 --> 00:06:35.200
  • We fear God by honoring him, by reverencing him,
  • 00:06:35.210 --> 00:06:41.080
  • by cherishing him.
  • 00:06:41.090 --> 00:06:43.220
  • We fear him because of his greatness and his majesty which
  • 00:06:43.230 --> 00:06:47.230
  • reduce us to an overpowering sense that nothing we could ever
  • 00:06:47.240 --> 00:06:52.220
  • confront in this world is like the God that we serve.
  • 00:06:52.230 --> 00:06:57.230
  • When we truly worship God
  • 00:06:57.240 --> 00:07:01.230
  • we enter into the wonder of who he is.
  • 00:07:01.240 --> 00:07:05.180
  • We hit the pinnacle of worship when we are brought into
  • 00:07:05.190 --> 00:07:08.290
  • the presence of the God we serve and made
  • 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:11.220
  • to be aware of his majesty and his wonder
  • 00:07:11.230 --> 00:07:15.060
  • and we're caught up in it because, for a moment
  • 00:07:15.070 --> 00:07:19.050
  • or so, we're made aware that this God of the universe is
  • 00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:23.110
  • the God that we know and the God that knows us.
  • 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:28.060
  • Could I just stop for a moment and say there used to be more of
  • 00:07:28.070 --> 00:07:32.160
  • that than there is today, even among those who do not know God.
  • 00:07:32.170 --> 00:07:38.020
  • It used to be in our culture that there was a kind of
  • 00:07:38.030 --> 00:07:41.060
  • maybe distant but nonetheless respect for God.
  • 00:07:41.070 --> 00:07:46.030
  • And a certain kind of respect for those who knew God.
  • 00:07:46.040 --> 00:07:51.200
  • I don't know if you've noticed but that's not around anymore.
  • 00:07:51.210 --> 00:07:55.130
  • We've lost that. Let me tell you a different way.
  • 00:07:55.140 --> 00:07:58.090
  • We used to have great and high regard for someone if we would
  • 00:07:58.100 --> 00:08:01.150
  • say about that person, "He is a God-fearing man."
  • 00:08:01.160 --> 00:08:06.250
  • You say that about someone today and they'll look at you and say,
  • 00:08:06.260 --> 00:08:09.040
  • "He's weird."
  • 00:08:09.050 --> 00:08:11.120
  • A God-fearing man used to be someone we looked up to.
  • 00:08:11.130 --> 00:08:14.240
  • We would say, "A God-fearing man, a God-fearing woman," and
  • 00:08:14.250 --> 00:08:17.210
  • we would say, "We respect them."
  • 00:08:17.220 --> 00:08:22.190
  • People ask me all the time, "What's gone wrong
  • 00:08:22.200 --> 00:08:24.180
  • with our nation?"
  • 00:08:24.190 --> 00:08:25.280
  • And I tell 'em, "We've lost our fear of God.
  • 00:08:25.290 --> 00:08:27.190
  • We've lost our sense of reverence for the God whose
  • 00:08:27.200 --> 00:08:33.270
  • principles were the foundation of this country."
  • 00:08:33.280 --> 00:08:38.130
  • You say, "Dr. Jeremiah, why should we fear God?"
  • 00:08:38.140 --> 00:08:41.040
  • Let me give you three reasons.
  • 00:08:41.050 --> 00:08:42.160
  • First of all, we should fear God because of who he is.
  • 00:08:42.170 --> 00:08:47.000
  • Psalm 89 says this: "For who in the heavens can be compared
  • 00:08:47.010 --> 00:08:53.080
  • to the Lord?
  • 00:08:53.090 --> 00:08:54.220
  • Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
  • 00:08:54.230 --> 00:08:59.180
  • God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
  • 00:08:59.190 --> 00:09:05.130
  • and to be held in reverence by all those around Him."
  • 00:09:05.140 --> 00:09:11.040
  • Jeremiah 10:6-7: "Inasmuch as there is none like You, O Lord
  • 00:09:11.050 --> 00:09:16.190
  • (You are great, and Your name is great in might), who should not
  • 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:20.170
  • fear You, O King of the nations?
  • 00:09:20.180 --> 00:09:25.110
  • For this is Your rightful due.
  • 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:27.280
  • For among all the wise men of the nations,
  • 00:09:27.290 --> 00:09:31.080
  • in all of their kingdoms, there is none like You."
  • 00:09:31.090 --> 00:09:36.120
  • We should fear God because of who he is.
  • 00:09:36.130 --> 00:09:38.160
  • There is none like him.
  • 00:09:38.170 --> 00:09:42.270
  • We should fear God, secondly, because of what he has done.
  • 00:09:42.280 --> 00:09:48.290
  • Once again, the Psalmist helps us with this: "By the word of
  • 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:53.190
  • the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the
  • 00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:59.030
  • breath of His mouth.
  • 00:09:59.040 --> 00:10:00.270
  • He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up
  • 00:10:00.280 --> 00:10:04.270
  • the deep in storehouses.
  • 00:10:04.280 --> 00:10:06.210
  • Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of
  • 00:10:06.220 --> 00:10:12.240
  • the world stand in awe of Him.
  • 00:10:12.250 --> 00:10:15.030
  • For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded,
  • 00:10:15.040 --> 00:10:21.080
  • and it stood fast."
  • 00:10:21.090 --> 00:10:22.180
  • Think of it. What has he done?
  • 00:10:22.190 --> 00:10:25.250
  • He spoke and the world came into existence.
  • 00:10:25.260 --> 00:10:31.230
  • In order to help us get a picture of it, the Psalmist
  • 00:10:31.240 --> 00:10:33.280
  • says: "He gathers up the waters in a heap.
  • 00:10:33.290 --> 00:10:37.020
  • He holds them in his hands."
  • 00:10:37.030 --> 00:10:40.130
  • The God that we serve, the God before whom we stand in awe and
  • 00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:47.090
  • fear and wonder, is the God who created the world in which we
  • 00:10:47.100 --> 00:10:51.140
  • lived and, yes, we believe he created it and he didn't need
  • 00:10:51.150 --> 00:10:54.220
  • any help to do it.
  • 00:10:54.230 --> 00:10:56.020
  • He created it out of nothing in the exact time periods
  • 00:10:56.030 --> 00:10:59.210
  • the Scripture says he created it.
  • 00:10:59.220 --> 00:11:02.080
  • He spoke it into being.
  • 00:11:02.090 --> 00:11:06.050
  • He is the Almighty God and we should worship him because
  • 00:11:06.060 --> 00:11:12.180
  • of what he has done.
  • 00:11:12.190 --> 00:11:14.280
  • Because of who he is, because of what he has done, and thirdly,
  • 00:11:14.290 --> 00:11:21.240
  • because of what he is doing.
  • 00:11:21.250 --> 00:11:26.210
  • All of God's great work is not in the past.
  • 00:11:26.220 --> 00:11:30.220
  • He is at work even today.
  • 00:11:30.230 --> 00:11:33.190
  • We should fear him because of what he is doing.
  • 00:11:33.200 --> 00:11:35.280
  • Psalm 66:5 says, in the present: "Come and see the works of God;
  • 00:11:35.290 --> 00:11:42.210
  • He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men."
  • 00:11:42.220 --> 00:11:48.070
  • Let me ask you what is he doing today that should inspire such
  • 00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:51.230
  • awe and fear in us?
  • 00:11:51.240 --> 00:11:53.270
  • We could make such a list but I wanna focus on one thing.
  • 00:11:53.280 --> 00:11:57.270
  • If you wonder why we should be in fear of God because of what
  • 00:11:57.280 --> 00:12:01.220
  • he is doing let me just say one word: forgiveness.
  • 00:12:01.230 --> 00:12:06.140
  • Psalm 130, verses 3 and 4, read like this: "If You, Lord,
  • 00:12:06.150 --> 00:12:10.230
  • should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
  • 00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:14.110
  • But there is forgiveness with You," now watch this,
  • 00:12:14.120 --> 00:12:20.140
  • "that You may be feared," that we may hold you in awe.
  • 00:12:20.150 --> 00:12:25.150
  • These verses remind us that "if we confess our sin he is
  • 00:12:27.280 --> 00:12:32.040
  • faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us
  • 00:12:32.050 --> 00:12:35.060
  • from all unrighteousness."
  • 00:12:35.070 --> 00:12:36.160
  • And some of us were forgiven of our sin when we were born again
  • 00:12:36.170 --> 00:12:40.060
  • so many years ago that we have forgotten and we no longer allow
  • 00:12:40.070 --> 00:12:43.280
  • ourselves to wonder in this truth that a holy God who
  • 00:12:43.290 --> 00:12:48.130
  • was 100% righteous with no flaw in him could accept us through
  • 00:12:48.140 --> 00:12:53.260
  • the simple process of his forgiveness.
  • 00:12:53.270 --> 00:12:57.050
  • And I am forgiven.
  • 00:12:57.060 --> 00:12:59.030
  • I am a sinner like all of you but I am a forgiven sinner.
  • 00:12:59.040 --> 00:13:05.070
  • Only two kinds of sinners: those who are forgiven and those
  • 00:13:05.080 --> 00:13:08.040
  • who are not, and forgiveness has been made available to all of us
  • 00:13:08.050 --> 00:13:11.190
  • if we will just accept it and it comes right from the heart
  • 00:13:11.200 --> 00:13:14.290
  • of Almighty God.
  • 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:16.100
  • It is the great work he is doing today.
  • 00:13:16.110 --> 00:13:19.140
  • And when we hear of people whose lives have been changed and we
  • 00:13:19.150 --> 00:13:23.130
  • listen to what they are saying and how they are saying it and
  • 00:13:23.140 --> 00:13:27.000
  • how God brought them through a process and now they are
  • 00:13:27.010 --> 00:13:29.260
  • Christians and their whole life has been changed and they're
  • 00:13:29.270 --> 00:13:32.210
  • in a whole new direction from where they once were,
  • 00:13:32.220 --> 00:13:35.240
  • this life-transforming thing is called forgiveness
  • 00:13:35.250 --> 00:13:39.070
  • and it's the work God is doing among us today.
  • 00:13:39.080 --> 00:13:43.000
  • It's the great work of God, your forgiveness and mine.
  • 00:13:43.010 --> 00:13:48.170
  • Before I go on to the last part of this message, I wanna
  • 00:13:48.180 --> 00:13:52.200
  • answer a question that sometimes people ask and that is,
  • 00:13:52.210 --> 00:13:59.100
  • "How can I love God and fear him at the same time?"
  • 00:13:59.110 --> 00:14:04.090
  • Because the Scripture seems to say that we cannot do that.
  • 00:14:04.100 --> 00:14:08.000
  • 1 John 4:18 says: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love
  • 00:14:08.010 --> 00:14:12.160
  • casts out fear, because fear involves torment.
  • 00:14:12.170 --> 00:14:17.060
  • But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."
  • 00:14:17.070 --> 00:14:20.120
  • The Bible tells us that we're to fear God and we're to love God
  • 00:14:22.190 --> 00:14:26.130
  • and they're not in conflict at all.
  • 00:14:26.140 --> 00:14:29.090
  • This verse reminds us that when we truly know the fear of God we
  • 00:14:29.100 --> 00:14:33.220
  • will understand the love of God and when we truly know the love
  • 00:14:33.230 --> 00:14:36.200
  • of God we will understand the fear of God.
  • 00:14:36.210 --> 00:14:39.250
  • They are not mutually exclusive, only in our own minds.
  • 00:14:39.260 --> 00:14:43.000
  • Now, when I told you at the front of this message that this
  • 00:14:43.010 --> 00:14:48.050
  • doctrine was kind of overwhelming to me, here's where
  • 00:14:48.060 --> 00:14:52.210
  • I'm going with that.
  • 00:14:52.220 --> 00:14:55.030
  • I just was not aware of how many places in the Bible we are given
  • 00:14:55.040 --> 00:15:00.040
  • promises if we will fear God.
  • 00:15:00.050 --> 00:15:02.220
  • I mean, I can only give you a few and there are many.
  • 00:15:05.090 --> 00:15:09.010
  • These are things the Bible says will be ours if we learn how to
  • 00:15:09.020 --> 00:15:13.090
  • fear God and hold him in esteem, as we are called to do.
  • 00:15:13.100 --> 00:15:18.060
  • First of all, is the promise of provision.
  • 00:15:18.070 --> 00:15:21.120
  • Here's the verse: Psalm 34:9-10: "Oh, fear the Lord,
  • 00:15:21.130 --> 00:15:26.290
  • you His saints!
  • 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:28.090
  • There is no want to those who fear Him.
  • 00:15:28.100 --> 00:15:33.130
  • The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek
  • 00:15:33.140 --> 00:15:37.080
  • the Lord shall not lack any good thing."
  • 00:15:37.090 --> 00:15:40.030
  • The Bible says if you fear God he provides for you.
  • 00:15:40.040 --> 00:15:45.080
  • Number two, the promise of protection: "Behold, the eye of
  • 00:15:45.090 --> 00:15:50.130
  • the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His
  • 00:15:50.140 --> 00:15:56.100
  • mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them
  • 00:15:56.110 --> 00:15:59.100
  • alive in famine."
  • 00:15:59.110 --> 00:16:01.290
  • When you fear God he protects you.
  • 00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:06.120
  • The promise of purity.
  • 00:16:06.130 --> 00:16:08.100
  • Psalm 103, verses 12-13: "As far as the east is from the west,
  • 00:16:08.110 --> 00:16:14.060
  • so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
  • 00:16:14.070 --> 00:16:17.030
  • As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those
  • 00:16:17.040 --> 00:16:23.100
  • who fear Him."
  • 00:16:23.110 --> 00:16:25.210
  • 2 Corinthians 7:1: "Therefore, having these promises, beloved,
  • 00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:29.220
  • let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and
  • 00:16:29.230 --> 00:16:32.280
  • spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."
  • 00:16:32.290 --> 00:16:37.290
  • According to these verses, godly fear is a necessary ingredient
  • 00:16:40.020 --> 00:16:44.010
  • to sanctification.
  • 00:16:44.020 --> 00:16:45.180
  • The fear of God is not only the key to our knowledge of God,
  • 00:16:45.190 --> 00:16:48.160
  • it is essential to our maturity as believers.
  • 00:16:48.170 --> 00:16:51.100
  • If we do not have a healthy awe and fear of God, we cannot grow,
  • 00:16:51.110 --> 00:16:55.100
  • we can never be mature.
  • 00:16:55.110 --> 00:16:57.040
  • We will always be like little children.
  • 00:16:57.050 --> 00:16:58.290
  • But when we understand who he is, it inspires in us a desire
  • 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:05.100
  • to know him more and to love him better and to grow in our
  • 00:17:05.110 --> 00:17:08.240
  • relationship with him.
  • 00:17:08.250 --> 00:17:10.160
  • The promise of provision and protection and purity.
  • 00:17:10.170 --> 00:17:14.020
  • Here's one some of you will like: the promise of prosperity.
  • 00:17:14.030 --> 00:17:18.210
  • Psalm 128:1 through 4.
  • 00:17:18.220 --> 00:17:20.230
  • Once again, watch for the "fear" word.
  • 00:17:20.240 --> 00:17:23.110
  • "Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways.
  • 00:17:23.120 --> 00:17:29.070
  • When you eat the labor of your hands, you will be happy,
  • 00:17:29.080 --> 00:17:32.090
  • and it shall be well with you.
  • 00:17:32.100 --> 00:17:34.070
  • Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in the very heart
  • 00:17:34.080 --> 00:17:37.100
  • of your house, your children like olive plants
  • 00:17:37.110 --> 00:17:40.220
  • all around your table.
  • 00:17:40.230 --> 00:17:42.020
  • Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord."
  • 00:17:42.030 --> 00:17:46.180
  • This teaches us that you can have a God-fearing family.
  • 00:17:48.220 --> 00:17:53.260
  • I grew up in a God-fearing family and you know what?
  • 00:17:53.270 --> 00:17:59.140
  • I learned how to have a God-fearing family.
  • 00:17:59.150 --> 00:18:04.230
  • So my family is a God-fearing family and I'm watching my kids
  • 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:08.260
  • and they're building God-fearing families.
  • 00:18:08.270 --> 00:18:11.280
  • The Bible tells us that when you fear the Lord, he prospers you
  • 00:18:11.290 --> 00:18:16.180
  • and it's not just financial things but he prospers you
  • 00:18:16.190 --> 00:18:20.050
  • in the well being that we all seek for our lives.
  • 00:18:20.060 --> 00:18:22.290
  • Here's the next one and this one I put at the top of the list
  • 00:18:25.100 --> 00:18:29.260
  • but I don't wanna do this just for myself.
  • 00:18:29.270 --> 00:18:32.180
  • This is the promise of prolonged days.
  • 00:18:32.190 --> 00:18:35.190
  • "The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of
  • 00:18:37.290 --> 00:18:41.270
  • the wicked will be shortened."
  • 00:18:41.280 --> 00:18:44.180
  • The Bible says and this is a principle, a general principle
  • 00:18:44.190 --> 00:18:48.070
  • like we find in the Psalms and in the Proverbs, in the long
  • 00:18:48.080 --> 00:18:51.100
  • run, over the long haul, if you fear the Lord, well,
  • 00:18:51.110 --> 00:18:54.130
  • what happens if you fear the Lord?
  • 00:18:54.140 --> 00:18:55.230
  • Well, you don't ruin your body with alcohol and drugs
  • 00:18:55.240 --> 00:18:59.080
  • and promiscuity and all of that
  • 00:18:59.090 --> 00:19:02.090
  • and so you're just gonna live longer.
  • 00:19:02.100 --> 00:19:03.230
  • It also says that God blesses those who fear him.
  • 00:19:03.240 --> 00:19:08.080
  • This is pretty exciting stuff.
  • 00:19:08.090 --> 00:19:11.220
  • Provision, protection, purity, prosperity, prolonged days.
  • 00:19:11.230 --> 00:19:16.150
  • And here's a word some of you have never heard before but
  • 00:19:16.160 --> 00:19:19.070
  • I'm gonna give it to you anyway 'cause it starts with a "P."
  • 00:19:19.080 --> 00:19:21.180
  • Perpetuity.
  • 00:19:24.040 --> 00:19:26.140
  • Do you know what that means?
  • 00:19:26.150 --> 00:19:27.250
  • That means the continuation of something into the generations
  • 00:19:27.260 --> 00:19:30.110
  • that go forward.
  • 00:19:30.120 --> 00:19:31.240
  • Remember I told you that if you have a God-fearing family
  • 00:19:31.250 --> 00:19:34.120
  • you will create God-fearing families going forward?
  • 00:19:34.130 --> 00:19:37.030
  • It's right out of the Scripture.
  • 00:19:37.040 --> 00:19:38.130
  • Listen to this, Deuteronomy 5:29: "Oh, that they had such
  • 00:19:38.140 --> 00:19:42.290
  • a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all
  • 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:48.010
  • My commandments, that it might be well with them and
  • 00:19:48.020 --> 00:19:51.120
  • with their children forever!"
  • 00:19:51.130 --> 00:19:54.260
  • Psalm 103:17: "But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting
  • 00:19:54.270 --> 00:19:58.290
  • to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness
  • 00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:04.280
  • to children's children."
  • 00:20:04.290 --> 00:20:07.250
  • Men and women, when we fear God we create an environment
  • 00:20:07.260 --> 00:20:12.000
  • in which our children grow up so that when they go out of our
  • 00:20:12.010 --> 00:20:16.100
  • home to start their own home, they create families that fear
  • 00:20:16.110 --> 00:20:20.090
  • God who then create other families that fear God.
  • 00:20:20.100 --> 00:20:23.190
  • We can do this if we follow the Word of God and the key is our
  • 00:20:23.200 --> 00:20:29.140
  • attitude toward God himself when we fear him.
  • 00:20:29.150 --> 00:20:33.110
  • Now, these are only samplings that are in the Bible.
  • 00:20:33.120 --> 00:20:36.040
  • If you wanna have some fun this weekend go to your concordance
  • 00:20:36.050 --> 00:20:39.230
  • and look up the fear of the Lord or the fear of God and write out
  • 00:20:39.240 --> 00:20:43.010
  • every verse that you find.
  • 00:20:43.020 --> 00:20:44.110
  • You will be so blessed you won't know what to do with yourself.
  • 00:20:44.120 --> 00:20:47.070
  • And the question then comes as to how do we learn to
  • 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:54.190
  • fear the Lord?
  • 00:20:54.200 --> 00:20:56.070
  • Is fearing the Lord something that you were born with
  • 00:20:56.080 --> 00:20:59.080
  • or do you learn it?
  • 00:20:59.090 --> 00:21:00.250
  • Well, let me suggest to you from the Scriptures that
  • 00:21:00.260 --> 00:21:03.100
  • I have found, this is something we can learn.
  • 00:21:03.110 --> 00:21:05.210
  • In fact, it was taught in the Bible.
  • 00:21:05.220 --> 00:21:09.060
  • When we begin to understand the blessings that can be ours
  • 00:21:09.070 --> 00:21:11.270
  • by fearing God, we will want to begin doing it
  • 00:21:11.280 --> 00:21:15.050
  • and it is possible to learn how to fear God.
  • 00:21:15.060 --> 00:21:17.200
  • The Bible tells us we can do that.
  • 00:21:17.210 --> 00:21:19.130
  • And here are some verses that will help you understand
  • 00:21:19.140 --> 00:21:21.180
  • what I mean.
  • 00:21:21.190 --> 00:21:22.280
  • King David wrote in his Psalms: "Come, you children,
  • 00:21:22.290 --> 00:21:26.030
  • and listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord."
  • 00:21:26.040 --> 00:21:31.220
  • Psalm 86:11 says: "Teach me Your way, O Lord;
  • 00:21:31.230 --> 00:21:35.220
  • I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name."
  • 00:21:35.230 --> 00:21:40.080
  • And Solomon, after he had finished writing the book
  • 00:21:40.090 --> 00:21:43.100
  • of Ecclesiastes and had experimented with all the wisdom
  • 00:21:43.110 --> 00:21:46.000
  • of the world that he could find and kept coming up with
  • 00:21:46.010 --> 00:21:48.140
  • the phrase, "And it's all vanity and it's all vanity and it's not
  • 00:21:48.150 --> 00:21:51.020
  • meaningful," and remember, Solomon was writing the book as
  • 00:21:51.030 --> 00:21:53.190
  • if there were no God, trying to find out meaning in life
  • 00:21:53.200 --> 00:21:57.170
  • without God in the picture.
  • 00:21:57.180 --> 00:21:58.270
  • He gets all the way to the end of it and he comes up
  • 00:21:58.280 --> 00:22:01.100
  • with this summary.
  • 00:22:01.110 --> 00:22:02.200
  • Listen to this, you guys: "Let us hear the conclusion of
  • 00:22:02.210 --> 00:22:06.190
  • the whole matter: fear God and keep His commandments,
  • 00:22:06.200 --> 00:22:13.140
  • for this is man's all."
  • 00:22:13.150 --> 00:22:17.190
  • The last words that a man speaks before his death are often
  • 00:22:17.200 --> 00:22:20.280
  • considered highly significant.
  • 00:22:20.290 --> 00:22:23.000
  • With that in mind, consider the last words of David, the king.
  • 00:22:23.010 --> 00:22:26.280
  • 2 Samuel 23, verse 3: "He who rules over men must be just,
  • 00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:32.040
  • ruling in the fear of God."
  • 00:22:32.050 --> 00:22:37.030
  • And the final words of Joshua: "Now therefore, fear the Lord,
  • 00:22:37.040 --> 00:22:41.280
  • serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods
  • 00:22:41.290 --> 00:22:45.110
  • which your fathers served on the other side of the River
  • 00:22:45.120 --> 00:22:48.110
  • and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!"
  • 00:22:48.120 --> 00:22:52.000
  • Did you ever dream the Bible had this much to say about
  • 00:22:52.010 --> 00:22:56.040
  • fearing God?
  • 00:22:56.050 --> 00:22:57.220
  • Maybe it's the thing we've lost.
  • 00:22:57.230 --> 00:23:00.090
  • Maybe we haven't understood that if God wants to bless us,
  • 00:23:00.100 --> 00:23:04.060
  • we have to learn how to fear God and hold him in reverence
  • 00:23:04.070 --> 00:23:07.080
  • and read his Word so that we can come to know him better.
  • 00:23:07.090 --> 00:23:11.080
  • Yes, it is possible to love God and fear God.
  • 00:23:11.090 --> 00:23:15.250
  • It is possible to know God in this incredible way, the God who
  • 00:23:15.260 --> 00:23:22.240
  • is awesome and the God who loves us so much that he gave his Son
  • 00:23:22.250 --> 00:23:29.290
  • to be our Savior.
  • 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.080
  • You know what, I'm so amazed because I came out of this study
  • 00:23:32.090 --> 00:23:35.060
  • realizing my God is much greater than I even thought.
  • 00:23:35.070 --> 00:23:38.140
  • He's so wonderful, he's so marvelous, this God we serve.
  • 00:23:38.150 --> 00:23:46.210
  • It is the terror of God and our protection in the midst of
  • 00:23:46.220 --> 00:23:52.060
  • it that brings such joy and wonder to our hearts.
  • 00:23:52.070 --> 00:23:56.200
  • We have a fearful God but he's the same God who has wrapped his
  • 00:23:56.210 --> 00:24:01.250
  • arms around us in the middle of life and loved us to himself.
  • 00:24:01.260 --> 00:24:06.230
  • It is the very wonder of who he is that causes us to be
  • 00:24:06.240 --> 00:24:12.010
  • overwhelmed that for such a one as me he would give
  • 00:24:12.020 --> 00:24:17.240
  • himself as he has.
  • 00:24:17.250 --> 00:24:19.280
  • And therefore, I can fear him and I can love him and,
  • 00:24:19.290 --> 00:24:26.170
  • by loving him, I learn to fear him.
  • 00:24:26.180 --> 00:24:29.190
  • And by fearing him, I learn to love him.
  • 00:24:29.200 --> 00:24:33.270
  • And the Bible says that love and fear go together and here's
  • 00:24:33.280 --> 00:24:38.160
  • what I want you to know.
  • 00:24:38.170 --> 00:24:39.280
  • If you get this fear right, it will begin to obliterate all of
  • 00:24:39.290 --> 00:24:46.050
  • the other fears of your life for if you know him and you know
  • 00:24:46.060 --> 00:24:52.140
  • he knows you, what is there to be afraid of?
  • 00:24:52.150 --> 00:24:57.230
  • What is there to be afraid of?
  • 00:24:57.240 --> 00:25:00.030
  • Hallelujah.

  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's program

  • right after this.
  • 00:25:05.020 --> 00:25:06.270
  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:25:08.260 --> 00:25:11.190
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:25:11.200 --> 00:25:14.290
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:17.220
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:25:17.230 --> 00:25:19.100

  • 00:25:19.110 --> 00:25:22.190
