  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Life moves so fast but is it taking you
  • 00:00:01.140 --> 00:00:06.160
  • where you want to go?
  • 00:00:06.170 --> 00:00:09.130
  • You can spend years searching for something you do not have,
  • 00:00:09.140 --> 00:00:13.050
  • only to end up where you don't want to be.
  • 00:00:13.060 --> 00:00:17.030
  • Exploring what the world has to offer,
  • 00:00:17.040 --> 00:00:20.080
  • we often find nothing.
  • 00:00:20.090 --> 00:00:23.270
  • However, your journey through
  • 00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:25.120
  • the twists and turns of this world
  • 00:00:25.130 --> 00:00:27.010
  • doesn't have to put you on the path
  • 00:00:27.020 --> 00:00:29.010
  • of discouragement and despair.
  • 00:00:29.020 --> 00:00:32.200
  • Let me tell you how to take the journey of your lifetime.
  • 00:00:32.210 --> 00:00:36.180
  • It's an adventure with God as your guide
  • 00:00:36.190 --> 00:00:39.030
  • where you'll discover the peace, the purpose,
  • 00:00:39.040 --> 00:00:41.280
  • and the power you've been seeking.
  • 00:00:41.290 --> 00:00:44.250
  • It's a journey of unimaginable blessing
  • 00:00:44.260 --> 00:00:48.130
  • and here is the amazing part.
  • 00:00:48.140 --> 00:00:50.210
  • With God, you already have
  • 00:00:50.220 --> 00:00:52.190
  • everything you need for life's journey.
  • 00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:55.130
  • Not half of what you need or a whole lot of what you need.
  • 00:00:55.140 --> 00:00:58.250
  • God has given you everything you need.
  • 00:00:58.260 --> 00:01:03.180
  • God never intended for you to stumble your way
  • 00:01:03.190 --> 00:01:06.020
  • through the course of each day
  • 00:01:06.030 --> 00:01:07.190
  • and certainly not journey unprepared into your future.
  • 00:01:07.200 --> 00:01:12.000
  • So where do you wanna go?
  • 00:01:12.010 --> 00:01:14.100
  • It's time to unpack all that God has given you.
  • 00:01:14.110 --> 00:01:18.250
  • Discover how you have been equipped for this journey
  • 00:01:18.260 --> 00:01:22.030
  • and can live with confidence because you, my friend,
  • 00:01:22.040 --> 00:01:25.200
  • have everything you need.
  • 00:01:25.210 --> 00:01:28.180
  • So travel with me across the United States
  • 00:01:28.190 --> 00:01:31.200
  • and join me in New York City,
  • 00:01:31.210 --> 00:01:34.020
  • high above Central Park in The Appel Room
  • 00:01:34.030 --> 00:01:37.040
  • at Jazz at Lincoln Center for my series,
  • 00:01:37.050 --> 00:01:40.150
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:01:40.160 --> 00:01:42.160
  • announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, Bible teacher, author,
  • 00:01:45.010 --> 00:01:47.220
  • and television host, please welcome Sheila Walsh.
  • 00:01:47.230 --> 00:01:51.230
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:01:52.060 --> 00:02:01.240
  • Sheila Walsh: Hello, everybody.
  • 00:02:01.250 --> 00:02:04.110
  • Welcome! So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:04.120 --> 00:02:09.210
  • Beautiful evening. So glad you're here.
  • 00:02:10.020 --> 00:02:12.050
  • I've had the honor of interviewing Dr. Jeremiah
  • 00:02:12.060 --> 00:02:14.220
  • in so many important subjects
  • 00:02:14.230 --> 00:02:17.170
  • but I am particularly excited about this amazing new series.
  • 00:02:17.180 --> 00:02:22.020
  • I believe it will impact how you and I live every single day.
  • 00:02:22.030 --> 00:02:27.260
  • Life is an adventure and you're either ready
  • 00:02:27.270 --> 00:02:31.070
  • to meet the challenge or you're not.
  • 00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:34.070
  • The path ahead might lead you through trying circumstances,
  • 00:02:34.080 --> 00:02:38.010
  • you might face daunting situations
  • 00:02:38.020 --> 00:02:40.180
  • or formidable obstacles.
  • 00:02:40.190 --> 00:02:43.160
  • Let me ask, do you ever feel a little unprepared
  • 00:02:43.170 --> 00:02:47.070
  • for everything that life has to throw at you?
  • 00:02:47.080 --> 00:02:50.060
  • Well, here's the great news.
  • 00:02:50.070 --> 00:02:52.050
  • You might be surprised to know that God has already given you
  • 00:02:52.060 --> 00:02:55.130
  • everything you need to live a godly life,
  • 00:02:55.140 --> 00:02:58.260
  • confident in the promises of God.
  • 00:02:58.270 --> 00:03:01.220
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:01.230 --> 00:03:04.030
  • And the wonderful thing about God
  • 00:03:04.040 --> 00:03:05.270
  • is God not only gives us these promises,
  • 00:03:05.280 --> 00:03:09.000
  • but he keeps every single one.
  • 00:03:09.010 --> 00:03:12.140
  • So it's time for you and I
  • 00:03:12.150 --> 00:03:13.260
  • to unpack all that God has given,
  • 00:03:13.270 --> 00:03:16.150
  • and Dr. Jeremiah is here today to encourage you
  • 00:03:16.160 --> 00:03:19.260
  • to harness the power of eight essentials
  • 00:03:19.270 --> 00:03:23.140
  • that will literally revolutionize your life.
  • 00:03:23.150 --> 00:03:26.160
  • So are you ready to get started?
  • 00:03:26.170 --> 00:03:29.060
  • Okay, please join me in welcoming to the stage
  • 00:03:29.070 --> 00:03:32.170
  • pastor, author, and beloved Bible teacher,
  • 00:03:32.180 --> 00:03:36.150
  • Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:03:36.160 --> 00:03:38.210
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:38.220 --> 00:03:48.170
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:03:48.290 --> 00:03:51.250
  • Sheila: This new series is amazing.
  • 00:03:51.260 --> 00:03:53.230
  • "Everything You Need."
  • 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:55.120
  • That's quite a promise.
  • 00:03:55.130 --> 00:03:57.110
  • Can you explain to us why you called this
  • 00:03:57.120 --> 00:03:59.010
  • particular teaching series, "Everything You Need"?
  • 00:03:59.020 --> 00:04:01.140
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I get most of my cues
  • 00:04:01.150 --> 00:04:03.120
  • from the Scripture and in 2 Peter chapter 1
  • 00:04:03.130 --> 00:04:06.040
  • it actually says right in the Scripture, it says:
  • 00:04:06.050 --> 00:04:09.100
  • "God has given us everything we need for life and godliness."
  • 00:04:09.110 --> 00:04:13.100
  • And I was reading that one day, aware of how many Christians
  • 00:04:13.110 --> 00:04:17.060
  • run around from place to place
  • 00:04:17.070 --> 00:04:19.000
  • trying to figure out how to get what they already have.
  • 00:04:19.010 --> 00:04:22.260
  • We don't need more programs.
  • 00:04:22.270 --> 00:04:25.010
  • We don't need more professionals.
  • 00:04:25.020 --> 00:04:27.130
  • We just need more time in the Word of God because
  • 00:04:27.140 --> 00:04:29.090
  • the Scripture says God has given us everything we need.
  • 00:04:29.100 --> 00:04:33.000
  • Sheila: What was it about this particular passage,
  • 00:04:34.180 --> 00:04:36.250
  • at this particular time?
  • 00:04:36.260 --> 00:04:38.250
  • Do you think we're struggling in the church
  • 00:04:38.260 --> 00:04:40.070
  • for lack of knowledge?
  • 00:04:40.080 --> 00:04:41.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think if there's one word
  • 00:04:41.110 --> 00:04:42.220
  • that describes where everybody is today,
  • 00:04:42.230 --> 00:04:44.150
  • I think it's the word "pressure."
  • 00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:45.280
  • Everybody seems like they're under a lot of pressure.
  • 00:04:45.290 --> 00:04:48.120
  • And I have to be honest with you, Sheila,
  • 00:04:48.130 --> 00:04:50.010
  • I got attracted to this particular passage
  • 00:04:50.020 --> 00:04:52.020
  • because I think it's singularly
  • 00:04:52.030 --> 00:04:53.240
  • one of the most perfect passages of Scripture in the Bible.
  • 00:04:53.250 --> 00:04:58.050
  • First of all, there's a promise at the beginning
  • 00:04:58.060 --> 00:05:00.170
  • and there's a blessing at the end
  • 00:05:00.180 --> 00:05:02.180
  • and in between are all the things you need to do
  • 00:05:02.190 --> 00:05:04.220
  • to get from the promise to the blessing.
  • 00:05:04.230 --> 00:05:06.220
  • And it's right in the text and it's--
  • 00:05:06.230 --> 00:05:08.290
  • it just grabbed me so much
  • 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:10.260
  • I thought I gotta share that passage
  • 00:05:10.270 --> 00:05:12.150
  • because it's so powerful.
  • 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:13.270
  • Sheila: Yeah, you're in for a great adventure.
  • 00:05:13.280 --> 00:05:15.190
  • One of the interesting things,
  • 00:05:15.200 --> 00:05:17.080
  • when Peter writes this letter and he talks about,
  • 00:05:17.090 --> 00:05:19.160
  • "To your faith add this and add that,"
  • 00:05:19.170 --> 00:05:21.270
  • you had an interesting revelation on the Greek meaning
  • 00:05:21.280 --> 00:05:24.260
  • behind the word "add."
  • 00:05:24.270 --> 00:05:26.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the Bible is so special.
  • 00:05:26.180 --> 00:05:28.110
  • You never wanna discount any word.
  • 00:05:28.120 --> 00:05:30.080
  • There's one little word, it's only mentioned
  • 00:05:30.090 --> 00:05:32.110
  • in 2 Peter 1 one time but it's assumed six times.
  • 00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:36.210
  • And it's the little word, "add."
  • 00:05:36.220 --> 00:05:38.180
  • And the Scripture goes something like this:
  • 00:05:38.190 --> 00:05:40.180
  • "When you have the special promises of God
  • 00:05:40.190 --> 00:05:42.200
  • you're to add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:42.210 --> 00:05:46.200
  • and to your virtue knowledge, and to your knowledge,"
  • 00:05:46.210 --> 00:05:49.090
  • and then it goes through all the eight things.
  • 00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:51.010
  • But the word "add" only is in the text one time
  • 00:05:51.020 --> 00:05:54.070
  • but it's assumed in all of the others.
  • 00:05:54.080 --> 00:05:55.290
  • So when he says, "Add to your faith virtue,
  • 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.180
  • and to your virtue knowledge,"
  • 00:05:58.190 --> 00:06:00.150
  • you assume he's saying "add to--"
  • 00:06:00.160 --> 00:06:01.280
  • so the word is assumed.
  • 00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:03.280
  • But the interesting thing about the word,
  • 00:06:03.290 --> 00:06:05.120
  • it's only three letters
  • 00:06:05.130 --> 00:06:06.270
  • and it is an incredibly powerful word.
  • 00:06:06.280 --> 00:06:09.180
  • It is a word that was used
  • 00:06:09.190 --> 00:06:11.210
  • in the days of the Greek theater.
  • 00:06:11.220 --> 00:06:14.010
  • When they would put on a major play,
  • 00:06:14.020 --> 00:06:16.140
  • they would get a sponsor.
  • 00:06:16.150 --> 00:06:18.090
  • He was called a choreogos and that's the word "add",
  • 00:06:18.100 --> 00:06:22.070
  • and it meant he would go out
  • 00:06:22.080 --> 00:06:23.170
  • and he would spend all this money
  • 00:06:23.180 --> 00:06:25.030
  • and get all these people together
  • 00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:26.230
  • to try to substantially make this play
  • 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:29.260
  • better than anybody else could make it,
  • 00:06:29.270 --> 00:06:32.030
  • and that's what the word "add" means.
  • 00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:33.260
  • And so, when Peter says we're to add to our faith virtue,
  • 00:06:33.270 --> 00:06:37.040
  • he's not talking about just, you know, throwing in a thought.
  • 00:06:37.050 --> 00:06:40.000
  • He's saying, "lavishly, completely,
  • 00:06:40.010 --> 00:06:42.290
  • like you were choreographing a play,
  • 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:45.060
  • add to your faith virtue."
  • 00:06:45.070 --> 00:06:46.200
  • In other words, do it seriously.
  • 00:06:46.210 --> 00:06:48.170
  • Don't just give it a second thought.
  • 00:06:48.180 --> 00:06:50.100
  • Do it as seriously as a man would go out
  • 00:06:50.110 --> 00:06:53.020
  • and try to raise money to underwrite a play.
  • 00:06:53.030 --> 00:06:56.130
  • Sheila: That's huge intentionality that would impact
  • 00:06:56.140 --> 00:06:58.210
  • how you live every single day.
  • 00:06:58.220 --> 00:07:00.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And you know what?
  • 00:07:00.060 --> 00:07:01.150
  • I had to ask myself have I ever done anything like that?
  • 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:04.000
  • You know, we had our moments
  • 00:07:04.010 --> 00:07:05.110
  • when we worked harder at the Christian life
  • 00:07:05.120 --> 00:07:06.270
  • but have we ever thrown everything we have at it?
  • 00:07:06.280 --> 00:07:09.020
  • Have we ever said, "Here it is, men.
  • 00:07:09.030 --> 00:07:10.270
  • This is my number one priority.
  • 00:07:10.280 --> 00:07:12.120
  • No matter what, I'm gonna make this happen
  • 00:07:12.130 --> 00:07:14.050
  • by the grace of God."
  • 00:07:14.060 --> 00:07:15.170
  • That's what the word means.
  • 00:07:15.180 --> 00:07:17.060
  • Sheila: And you talk about this great adventure
  • 00:07:17.070 --> 00:07:18.260
  • that begins with promises and ends in blessing.
  • 00:07:18.270 --> 00:07:21.240
  • But I'm wondering what about people who think,
  • 00:07:21.250 --> 00:07:23.220
  • "You know what?
  • 00:07:23.230 --> 00:07:25.020
  • I wish I'd heard this message years ago.
  • 00:07:25.030 --> 00:07:26.150
  • I'm too far beyond the promises of God."
  • 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:28.260
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, the wonderful thing
  • 00:07:28.270 --> 00:07:30.070
  • about all that, Sheila, is that God's promises are eternal.
  • 00:07:30.080 --> 00:07:32.160
  • They never run out.
  • 00:07:32.170 --> 00:07:34.010
  • God miraculously meets us wherever we are
  • 00:07:34.020 --> 00:07:36.200
  • with whatever situation and, you know,
  • 00:07:36.210 --> 00:07:38.090
  • it takes some of us longer to get the message.
  • 00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:40.080
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:07:40.090 --> 00:07:41.210
  • We have to go through more stuff until we hear him speak,
  • 00:07:41.220 --> 00:07:44.010
  • and then ultimately, because of what's going on in our life,
  • 00:07:44.020 --> 00:07:47.250
  • I mean I can't get over how many times as a pastor
  • 00:07:47.260 --> 00:07:50.060
  • I've found that the things that happen to us in our lives
  • 00:07:50.070 --> 00:07:53.200
  • are God's way of getting our attention
  • 00:07:53.210 --> 00:07:56.100
  • so he can help us understand how much he loves us
  • 00:07:56.110 --> 00:07:58.180
  • and what he wants to do to help us.
  • 00:07:58.190 --> 00:08:00.170
  • Sheila: So let's look at the things that Peter said
  • 00:08:00.180 --> 00:08:02.260
  • that we should add to our faith.
  • 00:08:02.270 --> 00:08:04.140
  • I thought it was interesting that the first thing
  • 00:08:04.150 --> 00:08:06.010
  • he talks about is diligence.
  • 00:08:06.020 --> 00:08:09.080
  • Why do you think Peter made that the very first step
  • 00:08:09.090 --> 00:08:11.210
  • in what you call, I love this,
  • 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:13.120
  • a stumble-proof life?
  • 00:08:13.130 --> 00:08:15.090
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I think it's important because
  • 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:17.020
  • it's the thing we usually don't bring to the process.
  • 00:08:17.030 --> 00:08:20.210
  • You know, we hear a message.
  • 00:08:20.220 --> 00:08:22.010
  • We think we should do it but we don't do it diligently.
  • 00:08:22.020 --> 00:08:24.160
  • And the word "diligently" is a very powerful word.
  • 00:08:24.170 --> 00:08:26.230
  • It kind of goes along with the word "add."
  • 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.280
  • It means make this a serious effort on your part
  • 00:08:28.290 --> 00:08:32.260
  • and do it diligently.
  • 00:08:32.270 --> 00:08:35.060
  • Practice it, work on it, don't put it off, don't say,
  • 00:08:35.070 --> 00:08:38.080
  • "I'll get around to it."
  • 00:08:38.090 --> 00:08:39.180
  • Get at it.
  • 00:08:39.190 --> 00:08:40.280
  • Do it and make it your main objective.
  • 00:08:40.290 --> 00:08:42.240
  • Sheila: I'm wondering even for some
  • 00:08:42.250 --> 00:08:44.050
  • who are younger in the faith, they might think, you know,
  • 00:08:44.060 --> 00:08:46.000
  • "That sounds like a lot of hard work."
  • 00:08:46.010 --> 00:08:48.000
  • How do you stay focused on being diligent?
  • 00:08:48.010 --> 00:08:51.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, it is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:51.090 --> 00:08:54.050
  • Most everything that's worthwhile
  • 00:08:54.060 --> 00:08:55.180
  • is a lot of hard work.
  • 00:08:55.190 --> 00:08:56.280
  • Can I get a witness on that, right?
  • 00:08:56.290 --> 00:08:59.130
  • But it is worthwhile hard work and what I found is this,
  • 00:08:59.140 --> 00:09:03.210
  • as you diligently apply yourself to the Scriptures,
  • 00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:07.110
  • God will always give you enough encouragement
  • 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:09.140
  • in the process to keep you going.
  • 00:09:09.150 --> 00:09:11.150
  • But if you don't diligently apply yourself,
  • 00:09:11.160 --> 00:09:13.170
  • you've got nowhere to go.
  • 00:09:13.180 --> 00:09:14.270
  • You're just sort of hanging in nowhere space.
  • 00:09:14.280 --> 00:09:17.070
  • He wants us more than anything else to get serious
  • 00:09:17.080 --> 00:09:19.230
  • about what we say we believe.
  • 00:09:19.240 --> 00:09:21.220
  • Sheila: Stay tuned.
  • 00:09:22.200 --> 00:09:23.290
  • We'll be right back to continue discussing
  • 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.090
  • "Everything You Need,"
  • 00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:26.190
  • the new teaching series by Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:09:26.200 --> 00:09:29.200
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:09:30.040 --> 00:09:35.190
  • announcer: In Dr. Jeremiah's new book,
  • 00:09:37.130 --> 00:09:38.230
  • "Everything You Need," he invites you to consider
  • 00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:40.250
  • how would your life change if you had the energy
  • 00:09:40.260 --> 00:09:43.260
  • to diligently fulfill God's purpose for you,
  • 00:09:43.270 --> 00:09:47.050
  • or the confidence to always do what pleases God,
  • 00:09:47.060 --> 00:09:50.060
  • or had an intimate knowledge of his Word.
  • 00:09:50.070 --> 00:09:52.250
  • What would your faith be like if you replaced a harmful habit
  • 00:09:52.260 --> 00:09:55.130
  • with a positive one, or developed a determination
  • 00:09:55.140 --> 00:09:58.090
  • that could carry you through any difficulty?
  • 00:09:58.100 --> 00:10:00.280
  • Do you wanna see yourself becoming more like Christ,
  • 00:10:00.290 --> 00:10:03.280
  • sharing his kindness and love to those around you?
  • 00:10:03.290 --> 00:10:06.210
  • It may surprise you to know that God has already given you
  • 00:10:06.220 --> 00:10:09.060
  • everything you need to do all this and more.
  • 00:10:09.070 --> 00:10:12.110
  • In "Everything You Need," learn practical ways to unleash
  • 00:10:12.120 --> 00:10:15.200
  • the power of God in your life and cultivate a faith
  • 00:10:15.210 --> 00:10:18.030
  • that will change you and everyone around you.

  • Sheila: Thank you for joining us.
  • 00:10:49.110 --> 00:10:50.180
  • I'm Sheila Walsh, here again to talk with Dr. David Jeremiah
  • 00:10:50.190 --> 00:10:53.200
  • about his new series, "Everything You Need."
  • 00:10:53.210 --> 00:10:57.060
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter talks about
  • 00:10:58.110 --> 00:11:00.100
  • adding to our faith is virtue.
  • 00:11:00.110 --> 00:11:02.110
  • That's not a word we use a lot in our culture anymore.
  • 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:04.210
  • What exactly is virtue?
  • 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:06.030
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me explain why we don't use it
  • 00:11:06.040 --> 00:11:07.130
  • very much 'cause there isn't very much of it in our culture.
  • 00:11:07.140 --> 00:11:09.230
  • Sheila: That's for sure.
  • 00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:11.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, virtue, the best definition of virtue
  • 00:11:11.170 --> 00:11:14.120
  • is moral excellence, doing the right thing.
  • 00:11:14.130 --> 00:11:18.010
  • There is a right and there is a wrong
  • 00:11:18.020 --> 00:11:19.260
  • and the Bible helps us understand.
  • 00:11:19.270 --> 00:11:21.260
  • You know, one of the best illustrations of it
  • 00:11:21.270 --> 00:11:23.180
  • and I talk about this in that chapter
  • 00:11:23.190 --> 00:11:25.110
  • is that when Jesus Christ was on this earth
  • 00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:28.160
  • he was the model of virtue
  • 00:11:28.170 --> 00:11:30.070
  • and the way we can see virtue in his life
  • 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:33.010
  • more than anything else is the Bible says:
  • 00:11:33.020 --> 00:11:35.000
  • "He always did those things that pleased his Father."
  • 00:11:35.010 --> 00:11:38.260
  • That was how he lived his life.
  • 00:11:38.270 --> 00:11:40.150
  • And you know, if you wanna be a virtuous person,
  • 00:11:40.160 --> 00:11:42.200
  • you can get real technical about it.
  • 00:11:42.210 --> 00:11:44.120
  • You can make all kinds of lists but let me just give you the--
  • 00:11:44.130 --> 00:11:47.200
  • what I think is the secret.
  • 00:11:47.210 --> 00:11:49.150
  • Learn how to live your life to please the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:49.160 --> 00:11:53.210
  • Do what pleases him and, you know what?
  • 00:11:53.220 --> 00:11:57.260
  • You don't have to wonder what those things are
  • 00:11:57.270 --> 00:12:01.230
  • 'cause he tells you pretty much in his Scripture
  • 00:12:01.240 --> 00:12:03.210
  • by his life, by his testimony.
  • 00:12:03.220 --> 00:12:06.080
  • As Jesus Christ pleased his Father,
  • 00:12:06.090 --> 00:12:09.030
  • our goal is to please our Christ.
  • 00:12:09.040 --> 00:12:12.180
  • So we're in that same little construct
  • 00:12:12.190 --> 00:12:14.170
  • where if we study the life of Jesus
  • 00:12:14.180 --> 00:12:16.230
  • and we watch how he functioned with his Father,
  • 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.080
  • we learn how to function with him.
  • 00:12:20.090 --> 00:12:23.050
  • Sheila: Peter says to that diligence and virtue,
  • 00:12:23.060 --> 00:12:25.260
  • then we add knowledge.
  • 00:12:25.270 --> 00:12:27.150
  • I think this is an interesting one
  • 00:12:27.160 --> 00:12:28.270
  • because we live in a time where people think technically
  • 00:12:28.280 --> 00:12:31.130
  • we have access to more knowledge
  • 00:12:31.140 --> 00:12:33.090
  • than we ever had.
  • 00:12:33.100 --> 00:12:34.240
  • But what kind of knowledge is Peter actually talking about?
  • 00:12:34.250 --> 00:12:37.100
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, let me just put a point in here
  • 00:12:37.110 --> 00:12:38.250
  • for the importance of knowledge
  • 00:12:38.260 --> 00:12:40.070
  • because there are a lot of people today
  • 00:12:40.080 --> 00:12:41.190
  • who teach that if you really wanna know Jesus Christ
  • 00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:44.040
  • you have to shut your brain off and just let your emotions rule.
  • 00:12:44.050 --> 00:12:47.160
  • That's a bunch of craziness
  • 00:12:47.170 --> 00:12:49.000
  • and I hope that you haven't heard that
  • 00:12:49.010 --> 00:12:50.120
  • and gotten caught up in it
  • 00:12:50.130 --> 00:12:51.220
  • because we can't do anything with what we don't know.
  • 00:12:51.230 --> 00:12:54.280
  • It's important to know some things.
  • 00:12:54.290 --> 00:12:56.240
  • In the Bible we're taught, first of all,
  • 00:12:56.250 --> 00:12:59.080
  • to study the Scripture
  • 00:12:59.090 --> 00:13:00.230
  • and know what the Scripture says.
  • 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:02.150
  • There's some homework involved in that.
  • 00:13:02.160 --> 00:13:04.150
  • It's blessed homework but it's still homework.
  • 00:13:04.160 --> 00:13:06.270
  • You know, the Bible is open to those
  • 00:13:06.280 --> 00:13:09.060
  • who will take it seriously
  • 00:13:09.070 --> 00:13:10.280
  • and then once you study the Scripture
  • 00:13:10.290 --> 00:13:13.100
  • you realize that in studying the Scripture
  • 00:13:13.110 --> 00:13:15.190
  • you're learning about Christ.
  • 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:17.080
  • Somebody once told me we can almost tell
  • 00:13:17.090 --> 00:13:19.050
  • what our relationship with Christ really is
  • 00:13:19.060 --> 00:13:21.160
  • when we examine what our relationship
  • 00:13:21.170 --> 00:13:23.070
  • with the Scripture is.
  • 00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:25.040
  • In other words, we can say, "I love the Lord,"
  • 00:13:25.050 --> 00:13:27.120
  • but if you don't ever read his love letters to you,
  • 00:13:27.130 --> 00:13:29.070
  • how does that work?
  • 00:13:29.080 --> 00:13:30.210
  • So you study the Scripture, you read the Word of God,
  • 00:13:30.220 --> 00:13:34.000
  • you learn what the Word of God says,
  • 00:13:34.010 --> 00:13:35.290
  • and the more you study, the more you know.
  • 00:13:36.000 --> 00:13:38.160
  • The more you know,
  • 00:13:38.170 --> 00:13:39.260
  • the more you realize you don't know.
  • 00:13:39.270 --> 00:13:41.060
  • That's one thing for sure. And the more you want to know.
  • 00:13:41.070 --> 00:13:43.290
  • Sheila: How do you stay motivated to still get excited
  • 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.220
  • to dive in one more time?
  • 00:13:46.230 --> 00:13:48.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, the Bible says that
  • 00:13:48.190 --> 00:13:49.280
  • "God's mercies are new every morning."
  • 00:13:49.290 --> 00:13:52.000
  • Isn't that true?
  • 00:13:52.010 --> 00:13:53.150
  • One of the blessings for me at this stage of my life
  • 00:13:53.160 --> 00:13:56.010
  • is I've taught most of the Scripture
  • 00:13:56.020 --> 00:13:57.290
  • and now when I'm studying a portion of Scripture,
  • 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:00.230
  • God brings to my mind the things that I've studied about,
  • 00:14:00.240 --> 00:14:03.030
  • other portions that have to do with this.
  • 00:14:03.040 --> 00:14:05.280
  • And it's just kind of that wonderful mystery
  • 00:14:05.290 --> 00:14:08.160
  • that goes on in the Scripture.
  • 00:14:08.170 --> 00:14:11.000
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter says
  • 00:14:11.010 --> 00:14:12.140
  • we should add to our faith is self-control.
  • 00:14:12.150 --> 00:14:15.180
  • One of the things I found encouraging
  • 00:14:15.190 --> 00:14:17.070
  • in your teaching in this series is you say
  • 00:14:17.080 --> 00:14:18.240
  • it's really more spirit-control than self-control.
  • 00:14:18.250 --> 00:14:22.020
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Yeah, a lot of times,
  • 00:14:22.030 --> 00:14:23.120
  • we blame our body for the things that go on
  • 00:14:23.130 --> 00:14:26.040
  • and we should, probably.
  • 00:14:26.050 --> 00:14:27.280
  • But most of the problems we have with sin
  • 00:14:27.290 --> 00:14:29.190
  • don't start in our body.
  • 00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:30.290
  • They start in our mind.
  • 00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:32.170
  • What we open up our minds to is what allows us
  • 00:14:32.180 --> 00:14:35.020
  • to go down the road that gets us in trouble.
  • 00:14:35.030 --> 00:14:37.220
  • Let me just say more than ever before
  • 00:14:37.230 --> 00:14:39.230
  • because of the Internet
  • 00:14:39.240 --> 00:14:41.040
  • and because of what used to be entertainment,
  • 00:14:41.050 --> 00:14:43.100
  • I told our people that we just did something in our house
  • 00:14:43.110 --> 00:14:46.020
  • and got a new system that's got, like,
  • 00:14:46.030 --> 00:14:48.020
  • 100 and 150 channels or whatever.
  • 00:14:48.030 --> 00:14:51.040
  • And one night I just sat down
  • 00:14:51.050 --> 00:14:52.230
  • and I clicked through all those channels
  • 00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:54.030
  • and I couldn't find one single thing
  • 00:14:54.040 --> 00:14:55.260
  • that I thought was worth watching.
  • 00:14:55.270 --> 00:14:57.190
  • Out of 150 channels.
  • 00:14:57.200 --> 00:15:00.050
  • Does that say anything about our culture?
  • 00:15:00.060 --> 00:15:02.140
  • I mean, thank God for sports.
  • 00:15:02.150 --> 00:15:04.190
  • Sheila: Amen.
  • 00:15:05.250 --> 00:15:07.040
  • [laughing]
  • 00:15:07.050 --> 00:15:10.000
  • The next thing that Peter addresses is perseverance.
  • 00:15:10.230 --> 00:15:14.190
  • What does it really mean to persevere?
  • 00:15:14.200 --> 00:15:17.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The best way to say that
  • 00:15:17.180 --> 00:15:18.270
  • is perseverance is continuing when you don't want to.
  • 00:15:18.280 --> 00:15:23.140
  • Here's what I've learned. Somebody told me this.
  • 00:15:23.150 --> 00:15:25.150
  • When we think we can't do anymore,
  • 00:15:25.160 --> 00:15:27.270
  • there's still 60% more that we can do.
  • 00:15:27.280 --> 00:15:32.100
  • We have our own little personal limitations
  • 00:15:32.110 --> 00:15:34.280
  • that are comfortable to us.
  • 00:15:34.290 --> 00:15:36.260
  • Perseverance is going beyond where you think you can go.
  • 00:15:36.270 --> 00:15:40.100
  • All of us here, if we're Christians,
  • 00:15:40.110 --> 00:15:42.220
  • we're Christians because somebody persevered.
  • 00:15:42.230 --> 00:15:45.270
  • Somebody preached the gospel when it wasn't easy.
  • 00:15:45.280 --> 00:15:48.190
  • Somebody came to your home
  • 00:15:48.200 --> 00:15:50.010
  • when they'd rather been home watching TV.
  • 00:15:50.020 --> 00:15:51.270
  • Somebody prayed for you.
  • 00:15:51.280 --> 00:15:53.260
  • Perseverance is one of the building blocks
  • 00:15:53.270 --> 00:15:56.000
  • of who we are in Christ.
  • 00:15:56.010 --> 00:15:57.210
  • Aren't you glad that Jesus Christ persevered
  • 00:15:57.220 --> 00:16:00.070
  • all the way to the cross, amen?
  • 00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:02.210
  • Sheila: Amen. I love how you describe it.
  • 00:16:02.220 --> 00:16:05.190
  • In this teaching you actually call it
  • 00:16:05.200 --> 00:16:07.190
  • "relentless determination."
  • 00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:09.250
  • Dr. Jeremiah: That's what it is.
  • 00:16:09.260 --> 00:16:11.080
  • When you're involved in serving the Lord,
  • 00:16:11.090 --> 00:16:14.190
  • the enemy comes along and he whispers in your heart,
  • 00:16:14.200 --> 00:16:17.000
  • "That's enough.
  • 00:16:17.010 --> 00:16:18.100
  • You don't need to do that anymore.
  • 00:16:18.110 --> 00:16:19.200
  • You're finished."
  • 00:16:19.210 --> 00:16:21.000
  • But you don't do that.
  • 00:16:21.010 --> 00:16:22.100
  • Relentlessly, you pursue.
  • 00:16:22.110 --> 00:16:23.250
  • And ask God to give you the grace for today
  • 00:16:23.260 --> 00:16:25.250
  • and when you do that, he will do that.
  • 00:16:25.260 --> 00:16:27.120
  • Sheila: Yeah, that's beautiful.
  • 00:16:27.130 --> 00:16:29.080
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:16:29.090 --> 00:16:32.150
  • Sheila: The next thing that Peter encourages us
  • 00:16:32.160 --> 00:16:34.200
  • to add to our faith is godliness.
  • 00:16:34.210 --> 00:16:36.290
  • And godliness is one of those words
  • 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:38.110
  • that just seems like it's kinda unattainable.
  • 00:16:38.120 --> 00:16:40.200
  • It's very lofty--
  • 00:16:40.210 --> 00:16:42.050
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know what, Sheila,
  • 00:16:42.060 --> 00:16:43.150
  • can I just be honest with you?
  • 00:16:43.160 --> 00:16:44.250
  • When I saw that list, I was pretty excited
  • 00:16:44.260 --> 00:16:46.220
  • about everything that was on that list.
  • 00:16:46.230 --> 00:16:48.150
  • When I saw "godliness," I got, "Oh, no,"
  • 00:16:48.160 --> 00:16:52.110
  • because, you know, that's an intimidating word, isn't it?
  • 00:16:52.120 --> 00:16:54.260
  • Sheila: It is.
  • 00:16:54.270 --> 00:16:56.060
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And it's been used in the wrong way
  • 00:16:56.070 --> 00:16:57.180
  • by a lot of people
  • 00:16:57.190 --> 00:16:58.280
  • and sometimes it can make you feel like,
  • 00:16:58.290 --> 00:17:00.170
  • "Well, I'm not even in this race.
  • 00:17:00.180 --> 00:17:02.040
  • Why am I even-- I don't even--
  • 00:17:02.050 --> 00:17:03.220
  • I don't even belong in a conversation about that."
  • 00:17:03.230 --> 00:17:06.080
  • But let's face it.
  • 00:17:06.090 --> 00:17:07.230
  • When you break that word down, it's simply this.
  • 00:17:07.240 --> 00:17:10.250
  • To be godly is to try to be like God.
  • 00:17:10.260 --> 00:17:14.030
  • That's all it means. To do what God would do.
  • 00:17:14.040 --> 00:17:16.150
  • And it's not like we don't have an illustration
  • 00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:19.040
  • because God in heaven, nobody has seen,
  • 00:17:19.050 --> 00:17:22.140
  • you can't see him and live.
  • 00:17:22.150 --> 00:17:24.110
  • So he sent his Son down here who was God in the flesh
  • 00:17:24.120 --> 00:17:28.180
  • and allowed us to witness his life for 30-some years
  • 00:17:28.190 --> 00:17:32.210
  • and see what it looks like to live godly.
  • 00:17:32.220 --> 00:17:36.020
  • And it's not all the high stuff that we put.
  • 00:17:36.030 --> 00:17:39.180
  • You know what it was?
  • 00:17:39.190 --> 00:17:40.280
  • It was helping a woman who was caught in adultery.
  • 00:17:40.290 --> 00:17:44.140
  • It was helping a father who lost his child.
  • 00:17:44.150 --> 00:17:48.000
  • It was reaching out to people with love and kindness.
  • 00:17:48.010 --> 00:17:51.020
  • When you see the life of Jesus on this earth and what he did,
  • 00:17:51.030 --> 00:17:54.100
  • it's not all this doctrinal stuff we think about.
  • 00:17:54.110 --> 00:17:57.070
  • It's the love and ministry we have with other people.
  • 00:17:57.080 --> 00:17:59.250
  • That's what it means to be godly.
  • 00:17:59.260 --> 00:18:01.290
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:05.180
  • Sheila: I can't think of a time in our culture
  • 00:18:05.190 --> 00:18:07.140
  • or in the church when we've needed this more.
  • 00:18:07.150 --> 00:18:09.220
  • He talks about brotherly kindness.
  • 00:18:09.230 --> 00:18:12.270
  • Why do you think Peter included that in this list?
  • 00:18:12.280 --> 00:18:16.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, because he lived in a time
  • 00:18:16.230 --> 00:18:18.150
  • similar to us.
  • 00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:20.180
  • He lived in a time when people went about
  • 00:18:20.190 --> 00:18:24.180
  • talking about love and not examining
  • 00:18:24.190 --> 00:18:27.130
  • their own lives to see if it was true.
  • 00:18:27.140 --> 00:18:29.230
  • And many of these chapters, you guys,
  • 00:18:29.240 --> 00:18:31.100
  • when we wrote this book,
  • 00:18:31.110 --> 00:18:33.080
  • I would take the quality that's on the list
  • 00:18:33.090 --> 00:18:35.170
  • and then I'd try to find the central passage
  • 00:18:35.180 --> 00:18:37.220
  • in the New Testament that taught that,
  • 00:18:37.230 --> 00:18:39.180
  • and the central passage for that one is in Ephesians chapter 4.
  • 00:18:39.190 --> 00:18:43.250
  • Well, you know this passage. If I say it, you'll remember it.
  • 00:18:43.260 --> 00:18:46.120
  • "Be kind one to another, tenderhearted,
  • 00:18:46.130 --> 00:18:48.280
  • forgiving one another,
  • 00:18:48.290 --> 00:18:50.110
  • even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you."
  • 00:18:50.120 --> 00:18:53.020
  • Isn't it a wonderful passage?
  • 00:18:53.030 --> 00:18:54.200
  • That's what brotherly kindness is.
  • 00:18:54.210 --> 00:18:56.170
  • And if you unlock that passage, there's, like,
  • 00:18:56.180 --> 00:18:58.210
  • four or five points in there that teach you what it means
  • 00:18:58.220 --> 00:19:01.290
  • to be kind and loving to one another,
  • 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:05.130
  • including a whole little section on not being angry.
  • 00:19:05.140 --> 00:19:09.120
  • And if you go back to Ephesians 4,
  • 00:19:09.130 --> 00:19:11.280
  • it's about verse 25 or so, and read that section,
  • 00:19:11.290 --> 00:19:15.040
  • you will have Paul's sermon on brotherly kindness
  • 00:19:15.050 --> 00:19:20.040
  • and what it looks like and it's all real simple.
  • 00:19:20.050 --> 00:19:23.090
  • I mean, it's not rocket science.
  • 00:19:23.100 --> 00:19:25.060
  • It's just the everyday things that we do
  • 00:19:25.070 --> 00:19:27.290
  • that make a difference in who we are.
  • 00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:29.270
  • Sheila: Well, we've come to the conclusion of Peter's list
  • 00:19:29.280 --> 00:19:32.050
  • and we're told to add love to our faith.
  • 00:19:32.060 --> 00:19:34.220
  • And you point out the New Living Translation
  • 00:19:34.230 --> 00:19:36.190
  • describes it as love for everyone.
  • 00:19:36.200 --> 00:19:39.230
  • How do we do that when there's, I mean,
  • 00:19:39.240 --> 00:19:42.250
  • I know there'll be many people out there
  • 00:19:42.260 --> 00:19:44.070
  • who have been seriously hurt by someone.
  • 00:19:44.080 --> 00:19:46.010
  • How do you love when you've been wounded?
  • 00:19:46.020 --> 00:19:48.290
  • Dr. Jeremiah: It's not natural. Sheila: No.
  • 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:50.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: No, but it's supernatural.
  • 00:19:50.170 --> 00:19:53.070
  • You can only love that person through the love of Christ.
  • 00:19:53.080 --> 00:19:56.080
  • And I think the key to us all, for all of us,
  • 00:19:56.090 --> 00:19:58.140
  • is to realize how unlovely we were
  • 00:19:58.150 --> 00:20:02.220
  • when Christ died for us.
  • 00:20:02.230 --> 00:20:04.130
  • The Bible even says it, you know?
  • 00:20:04.140 --> 00:20:06.170
  • The Bible says it in so many different ways.
  • 00:20:06.180 --> 00:20:08.100
  • He died for us when there really
  • 00:20:08.110 --> 00:20:09.220
  • was no reason for him to do that.
  • 00:20:09.230 --> 00:20:11.260
  • And here's what I've been learning in my life, Sheila.
  • 00:20:11.270 --> 00:20:14.210
  • We love others out of the reservoir of God's love for us.
  • 00:20:14.220 --> 00:20:19.240
  • Sheila: That's so true.
  • 00:20:19.250 --> 00:20:22.170
  • Our culture, particularly at the moment
  • 00:20:22.180 --> 00:20:25.170
  • in the days we're living in, seems very polarized,
  • 00:20:25.180 --> 00:20:27.280
  • you know, that we're all one side or another.
  • 00:20:27.290 --> 00:20:30.170
  • How do we practice that love in that atmosphere?
  • 00:20:30.180 --> 00:20:34.110
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, you know, I'm not really sure where to go
  • 00:20:34.120 --> 00:20:37.060
  • with what I know you're talking about.
  • 00:20:37.070 --> 00:20:39.110
  • Today, in our culture, it's not even a matter of love anymore.
  • 00:20:39.120 --> 00:20:42.270
  • It's just--it's a matter of civility, you know?
  • 00:20:42.280 --> 00:20:45.270
  • Love's way down the line.
  • 00:20:45.280 --> 00:20:47.210
  • If we could just even be kind of nice to one another,
  • 00:20:47.220 --> 00:20:49.270
  • that would be good.
  • 00:20:49.280 --> 00:20:51.140
  • Paul wrote to the Romans and he said,
  • 00:20:51.150 --> 00:20:53.030
  • "Don't let the world pour you into its mold."
  • 00:20:53.040 --> 00:20:55.260
  • Don't let the things that are happening in the world
  • 00:20:55.270 --> 00:20:58.120
  • make you different than you know you should be.
  • 00:20:58.130 --> 00:21:01.000
  • You can still be friends with those
  • 00:21:01.010 --> 00:21:02.220
  • who don't agree with you
  • 00:21:02.230 --> 00:21:04.200
  • and we as Christians ought to be the ones
  • 00:21:04.210 --> 00:21:06.250
  • showing the way to do that.
  • 00:21:06.260 --> 00:21:08.140
  • Sheila: Yeah, so when we add these eight characteristics
  • 00:21:08.150 --> 00:21:11.030
  • to our faith,
  • 00:21:11.040 --> 00:21:12.150
  • what are the blessings that we can expect from God?
  • 00:21:12.160 --> 00:21:14.180
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Well, I can't go through all of those.
  • 00:21:14.190 --> 00:21:15.280
  • We don't have time.
  • 00:21:15.290 --> 00:21:17.090
  • But let me just tell you, there's seven of 'em.
  • 00:21:17.100 --> 00:21:18.190
  • Five of them you get now,
  • 00:21:18.200 --> 00:21:20.050
  • two of 'em you've got to wait for.
  • 00:21:20.060 --> 00:21:23.030
  • And I love this last chapter in this book
  • 00:21:23.040 --> 00:21:24.280
  • because it tells us six times in five verses,
  • 00:21:24.290 --> 00:21:28.170
  • it talks about these things.
  • 00:21:28.180 --> 00:21:30.100
  • That little phrase, "these things."
  • 00:21:30.110 --> 00:21:32.030
  • If you do these things and here's one of the statements.
  • 00:21:32.040 --> 00:21:34.220
  • Let me just talk about this one.
  • 00:21:34.230 --> 00:21:37.070
  • This is one of the reasons that I wrote this book
  • 00:21:37.080 --> 00:21:39.230
  • and this is what grabbed me.
  • 00:21:39.240 --> 00:21:41.070
  • And listen, this is right from the Bible.
  • 00:21:41.080 --> 00:21:43.000
  • I'm not making this up.
  • 00:21:43.010 --> 00:21:45.020
  • Peter said, after talking about all these things, he said this:
  • 00:21:45.030 --> 00:21:48.020
  • "If you do these things, you will never stumble."
  • 00:21:48.030 --> 00:21:55.200
  • I thought, "Can that be true?" But then I thought back on 'em.
  • 00:21:55.210 --> 00:21:59.120
  • If you lavishly devote yourself diligently
  • 00:21:59.130 --> 00:22:02.240
  • to the growth of your life in the areas
  • 00:22:02.250 --> 00:22:05.140
  • that he describes in that chapter,
  • 00:22:05.150 --> 00:22:07.100
  • here's what he says.
  • 00:22:07.110 --> 00:22:08.200
  • If you do these things, you will never stumble.
  • 00:22:08.210 --> 00:22:10.260
  • And then he said at the end of 'em, the last one he said,
  • 00:22:10.270 --> 00:22:14.010
  • "You will go into eternity abundantly."
  • 00:22:14.020 --> 00:22:17.070
  • In other words, it doesn't say,
  • 00:22:17.080 --> 00:22:18.280
  • "If you do these things, you'll go to eternity,"
  • 00:22:18.290 --> 00:22:20.190
  • 'cause you can't work your way to heaven.
  • 00:22:20.200 --> 00:22:22.170
  • It's not about going to heaven; it's about how you go to heaven.
  • 00:22:22.180 --> 00:22:25.120
  • And he says, "If you wanna go to heaven,
  • 00:22:25.130 --> 00:22:27.130
  • kind of slipping in the back door,
  • 00:22:27.140 --> 00:22:28.250
  • you can do that.
  • 00:22:28.260 --> 00:22:30.070
  • Or if you wanna go to heaven with your hands up high,
  • 00:22:30.080 --> 00:22:32.150
  • rejoicing that you've had the privilege of honoring the Lord
  • 00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:35.130
  • and living for him during your lifetime,
  • 00:22:35.140 --> 00:22:37.130
  • you can do that."
  • 00:22:37.140 --> 00:22:38.230
  • He says, "If you do these things,
  • 00:22:38.240 --> 00:22:40.070
  • you will have an abundant entrance
  • 00:22:40.080 --> 00:22:42.210
  • into heaven," hallelujah.
  • 00:22:42.220 --> 00:22:44.130
  • Sheila: This is amazing. What a promise, wow.
  • 00:22:44.140 --> 00:22:49.090
  • That chapter has impacted me so much.
  • 00:22:49.100 --> 00:22:52.280
  • I mean, this is Peter who sat at the Lord's feet,
  • 00:22:52.290 --> 00:22:55.190
  • saying to us, "Here's this promise.
  • 00:22:55.200 --> 00:22:57.170
  • You do this and this will happen."
  • 00:22:57.180 --> 00:23:00.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: And he didn't exactly live a perfect life.
  • 00:23:00.090 --> 00:23:01.280
  • Sheila: No.
  • 00:23:01.290 --> 00:23:03.080
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I mean, he had his moments.
  • 00:23:03.090 --> 00:23:04.180
  • He had his trouble.
  • 00:23:04.190 --> 00:23:05.280
  • Until he figured it out and got it right,
  • 00:23:05.290 --> 00:23:07.160
  • and then was honored to be crucified upside down
  • 00:23:07.170 --> 00:23:10.250
  • instead of being crucified right-side up
  • 00:23:10.260 --> 00:23:13.050
  • 'cause he felt he wasn't worthy of the Lord he loved.
  • 00:23:13.060 --> 00:23:16.230
  • Sheila: As we bring this to a conclusion, let me ask you,
  • 00:23:16.240 --> 00:23:19.030
  • how has studying this passage impacted your own life?
  • 00:23:19.040 --> 00:23:22.150
  • Dr. Jeremiah: You know, it's very emotional to me.
  • 00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:25.110
  • It's just another reminder, you know,
  • 00:23:25.120 --> 00:23:27.220
  • of the sufficiency of the Word of God.
  • 00:23:27.230 --> 00:23:30.060
  • As I mentioned at the beginning,
  • 00:23:30.070 --> 00:23:31.200
  • we have so many Christians running hither and yon
  • 00:23:31.210 --> 00:23:34.080
  • trying to find out what's wrong or what's missing or,
  • 00:23:34.090 --> 00:23:37.200
  • "Who can I talk to?
  • 00:23:37.210 --> 00:23:39.050
  • What great preacher can I listen to?
  • 00:23:39.060 --> 00:23:40.250
  • What sermon can I watch on TV? Send me that CD.
  • 00:23:40.260 --> 00:23:43.230
  • I gotta have this worship experience."
  • 00:23:43.240 --> 00:23:46.010
  • And then you read this simple letter
  • 00:23:46.020 --> 00:23:48.140
  • and it says God has given you
  • 00:23:48.150 --> 00:23:51.120
  • everything you need for life in godliness.
  • 00:23:51.130 --> 00:23:54.260
  • Now, the fact that he's given it to us as a gift,
  • 00:23:54.270 --> 00:23:57.260
  • you know, Paul wrote to the Philippians and he said,
  • 00:23:57.270 --> 00:23:59.270
  • "Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling;
  • 00:23:59.280 --> 00:24:02.270
  • for it is God who works in you
  • 00:24:02.280 --> 00:24:05.090
  • both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
  • 00:24:05.100 --> 00:24:07.110
  • In other words, God has worked it in.
  • 00:24:07.120 --> 00:24:10.030
  • Now you work it out.
  • 00:24:10.040 --> 00:24:11.220
  • God's given you this gift, and go do it.
  • 00:24:11.230 --> 00:24:14.130
  • Sheila: Please will you help me thank Dr. David Jeremiah.
  • 00:24:16.040 --> 00:24:19.090
  • [audience applauding]
  • 00:24:19.100 --> 00:24:25.200
  • announcer: Today, Dr. Jeremiah gave us practical steps
  • 00:24:28.160 --> 00:24:31.060

  • for a stumble-proof life.

  • The first step to claiming the promises and blessings
  • 00:25:18.050 --> 00:25:20.210

  • 00:26:32.120 --> 00:26:34.210
  • in our heart, and he wants to fill that with himself
  • 00:26:34.220 --> 00:26:37.100
