  • are your arteries have already sustained irreparable damage.
  • 00:00:25.180 --> 00:00:29.030
  • However, taking Fralenox could prevent ongoing plaque build-up.

  • Side effects may include headache, nausea,

  • even heart disease.

  • announcer: Have you recently lost your keys?
  • 00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:42.140
  • Walked into a room only to forget why you're there?
  • 00:00:42.150 --> 00:00:44.250
  • Forgotten a birthday or anniversary of a loved one?
  • 00:00:44.260 --> 00:00:47.160
  • Forgetfulness is just a symptom of getting older, right?
  • 00:00:47.170 --> 00:00:50.140
  • Wrong.
  • 00:00:50.150 --> 00:00:52.080
  • These could be signs of something more serious.
  • 00:00:52.090 --> 00:00:55.040
  • Taking Refclavir can help you reclaim your mind.
  • 00:00:55.050 --> 00:00:58.170
  • If you're forgetful and do nothing more at night than sit
  • 00:00:58.180 --> 00:01:01.100
  • at home alone, eating popcorn in the dark, perhaps it's time to
  • 00:01:01.110 --> 00:01:05.140
  • ask your physician about Refclavir.
  • 00:01:05.150 --> 00:01:07.280
  • Don't take Refclavir if you have plantar fasciitis,

  • postnasal drip, dry elbow, or inflamed tissues of the--
  • 00:01:10.220 --> 00:01:16.010
  • Don: Really?
  • 00:01:16.020 --> 00:01:17.220
  • announcer: Yes, really, Don.
  • 00:01:17.230 --> 00:01:19.200
  • With your family history of cancer you may wanna
  • 00:01:19.210 --> 00:01:22.000
  • stay tuned and listen closely.
  • 00:01:22.010 --> 00:01:23.170
  • Don: Me?
  • 00:01:23.180 --> 00:01:25.080
  • announcer: Yes, you.
  • 00:01:25.090 --> 00:01:26.240
  • Don, who knows how long your parents and Uncle Roger
  • 00:01:26.250 --> 00:01:30.030
  • would have lived if they had taken Aferimine.
  • 00:01:30.040 --> 00:01:33.020
  • Don: Unbelievable.
  • 00:01:33.030 --> 00:01:34.260
  • announcer: But always a possibility.
  • 00:01:34.270 --> 00:01:36.260
  • You feel good today, Don, but who knows what tomorrow brings.
  • 00:01:36.270 --> 00:01:39.260
  • Don: Okay.
  • 00:01:39.270 --> 00:01:41.060
  • announcer: Don't change the channel, Don.
  • 00:01:41.070 --> 00:01:42.220
  • Call your doctor now.
  • 00:01:42.230 --> 00:01:45.010
  • Don: [sighing]
  • 00:01:45.020 --> 00:01:49.210
  • announcer: That breath didn't sound so good, Don.
  • 00:01:49.220 --> 00:01:51.180
  • That could be the early signs of lung disease.
  • 00:01:51.190 --> 00:01:53.290
  • You need to ask your doctor about Brafenol.
  • 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.180
  • Don: Okay, I've had just about enough of this.
  • 00:01:56.190 --> 00:01:59.010
  • announcer: Change the channel but I will just follow you from
  • 00:01:59.020 --> 00:02:00.250
  • station to station.
  • 00:02:00.260 --> 00:02:02.050
  • Don: I'm tired of being hounded by you.
  • 00:02:02.060 --> 00:02:04.010
  • announcer: That's my job.
  • 00:02:04.020 --> 00:02:05.270
  • I'm fear.
  • 00:02:05.280 --> 00:02:07.090
  • Don: And I'm over you.
  • 00:02:07.100 --> 00:02:09.010
  • I can't even watch television without being frightened about
  • 00:02:09.020 --> 00:02:11.110
  • contracting some disease.
  • 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:13.130
  • announcer: It's just not the disease you should fear.
  • 00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:16.080
  • Drug side effects are just as bad as--
  • 00:02:16.090 --> 00:02:18.020
  • Don: Stop!
  • 00:02:18.030 --> 00:02:19.150
  • You've been making me afraid of contracting some disease
  • 00:02:19.160 --> 00:02:21.260
  • for far too long.
  • 00:02:21.270 --> 00:02:23.060
  • I'm sick and tired of it.
  • 00:02:23.070 --> 00:02:24.160
  • announcer: Sick and tired?
  • 00:02:24.170 --> 00:02:25.260
  • Your physician can prescribe something that might cure that.
  • 00:02:25.270 --> 00:02:28.120
  • Don: Funny you should mention a cure.
  • 00:02:28.130 --> 00:02:30.100
  • I thought I might run into you tonight.
  • 00:02:30.110 --> 00:02:33.080
  • Here.
  • 00:02:33.090 --> 00:02:35.190
  • announcer: What's this, a prescription?
  • 00:02:35.200 --> 00:02:37.240
  • Don: Yes.
  • 00:02:37.250 --> 00:02:39.060
  • announcer: Final notice.
  • 00:02:39.070 --> 00:02:40.200
  • What kind of a drug is that?
  • 00:02:40.210 --> 00:02:42.050
  • Don: It stops you from being contagious.
  • 00:02:42.060 --> 00:02:44.130
  • announcer: How does it work?
  • 00:02:44.140 --> 00:02:46.010
  • Don: You can't spread fear to me any longer.
  • 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:48.120
  • I'm not going to be afraid of disease and when the day comes
  • 00:02:48.130 --> 00:02:50.280
  • when I become ill I will courageously put my life
  • 00:02:50.290 --> 00:02:53.220
  • in God's hands.
  • 00:02:53.230 --> 00:02:55.170
  • announcer: But there is no cure for fear.
  • 00:02:55.180 --> 00:02:58.180
  • Don: That's not what the Great Physician tells me.
  • 00:03:00.040 --> 00:03:02.180
  • announcer: But Don,
  • 00:03:02.190 --> 00:03:03.280
  • don't you still get that occasional headache?
  • 00:03:03.290 --> 00:03:05.080
  • Don: I'm changing the channel.
  • 00:03:05.090 --> 00:03:06.180
  • announcer: Wait.
  • 00:03:06.190 --> 00:03:07.280
  • That ingrown hair may be much more than you think.
  • 00:03:07.290 --> 00:03:09.230
  • Don: Enough!
  • 00:03:09.240 --> 00:03:11.030
  • announcer: Don't change the channel.
  • 00:03:11.040 --> 00:03:12.140
  • We've yet to discuss your acid reflux.
  • 00:03:12.150 --> 00:03:14.070
  • Don: Goodbye, fear.
  • 00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:15.180
  • announcer: But wait, Don, listen to me.
  • 00:03:15.190 --> 00:03:17.040
  • Don't change the channel. This is serious.
  • 00:03:17.050 --> 00:03:19.060
  • You should be afraid.
  • 00:03:19.070 --> 00:03:23.020
  • 00:03:28.180 --> 00:03:36.180
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Have you ever thought about the fact that
  • 00:03:37.050 --> 00:03:39.020
  • when we get to heaven we won't be subjected to
  • 00:03:39.030 --> 00:03:42.010
  • prescription drug ads?
  • 00:03:42.020 --> 00:03:43.220
  • We certainly can't escape them here on this earth, can we?
  • 00:03:43.230 --> 00:03:47.020
  • I mean, television, newspapers, websites.
  • 00:03:47.030 --> 00:03:49.220
  • These ads are everywhere, warning us of diseases
  • 00:03:49.230 --> 00:03:53.230
  • that seem to be lurking around every corner.
  • 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:56.200
  • Now, I'm not condemning modern medicine but I am concerned
  • 00:03:56.210 --> 00:03:59.290
  • about an epidemic affecting millions consumed
  • 00:04:00.020 --> 00:04:03.180
  • by the possibility of falling ill: the epidemic of fear.
  • 00:04:03.190 --> 00:04:09.100
  • And the good news is the Great Physician
  • 00:04:09.110 --> 00:04:12.050
  • has prescribed a treatment for fear which we'll discover
  • 00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:16.110
  • as we consider "Disease: The Fear of Serious Illness."
  • 00:04:16.120 --> 00:04:21.020
  • It's all part of our ten-part series, "What Are You Afraid Of?
  • 00:04:21.030 --> 00:04:24.260
  • Facing down Your Fears with Faith."
  • 00:04:24.270 --> 00:04:27.090
  • It's interesting, by taking fear out of our response to sickness,
  • 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:32.050
  • God gives us the best medicine of all:
  • 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:35.010
  • encouragement.
  • 00:04:35.020 --> 00:04:36.110
  • That's coming up today on this edition of "Turning Point."
  • 00:04:36.120 --> 00:04:41.000
  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:04:42.130 --> 00:04:44.240
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:04:44.250 --> 00:04:48.030
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:04:48.040 --> 00:04:50.280
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:04:50.290 --> 00:04:52.160
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:04:52.170 --> 00:04:55.270
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power
  • 00:04:55.280 --> 00:04:59.060
  • and of love and of a sound mind.
  • 00:04:59.070 --> 00:05:01.260
  • That's why "New York Times" bestselling author,
  • 00:05:01.270 --> 00:05:03.280
  • David Jeremiah,
  • 00:05:03.290 --> 00:05:05.080
  • is challenging you to face down your fears with faith.

  • 00:05:22.110 --> 00:05:24.260
  • 00:05:27.280 --> 00:05:34.060
  • Dr. Jeremiah: As I was preparing this message,
  • 00:05:34.280 --> 00:05:37.010
  • I had to take time out to get my semi-annual CT scan
  • 00:05:37.020 --> 00:05:41.150
  • at the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla.
  • 00:05:41.160 --> 00:05:44.030
  • I have made this roundtrip journey now for almost 20 years.
  • 00:05:44.040 --> 00:05:49.040
  • Started in 1994 when I was diagnosed with
  • 00:05:49.050 --> 00:05:52.180
  • non-Hodgkins lymphoma at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
  • 00:05:52.190 --> 00:05:56.240
  • Minnesota, and then I was sent back here
  • 00:05:56.250 --> 00:05:59.020
  • for this local hospital in La Jolla to care for me.
  • 00:05:59.030 --> 00:06:04.140
  • On that first day as I went to the clinic I met oncologist
  • 00:06:04.150 --> 00:06:08.240
  • Dr. Alan Saven and after these many years
  • 00:06:08.250 --> 00:06:12.180
  • he is still the one who examines me twice a year.
  • 00:06:12.190 --> 00:06:16.020
  • It was Dr. Saven, along with Dr. Charles Mason, who presided
  • 00:06:16.030 --> 00:06:20.190
  • over the stem cell transplant which ultimately brought me
  • 00:06:20.200 --> 00:06:24.120
  • healing from this disease and gave me my life back.
  • 00:06:24.130 --> 00:06:28.280
  • I've written about this extensively in a book I authored
  • 00:06:28.290 --> 00:06:32.000
  • back then called "When Your World Falls Apart,"
  • 00:06:32.010 --> 00:06:34.130
  • so I won't go into detail here about that.
  • 00:06:34.140 --> 00:06:37.050
  • But since I'm preaching this series about fear, I thought I
  • 00:06:37.060 --> 00:06:40.270
  • would answer the question that I've been asked hundreds
  • 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:43.010
  • of times over these last two decades.
  • 00:06:43.020 --> 00:06:45.160
  • Here it is.
  • 00:06:45.170 --> 00:06:46.260
  • "Dr. Jeremiah, were you ever afraid
  • 00:06:46.270 --> 00:06:50.010
  • during the time you were dealing with cancer?"
  • 00:06:50.020 --> 00:06:52.100
  • Now, the question itself is kind of amusing to me because it
  • 00:06:52.110 --> 00:06:54.160
  • seems to indicate that if you're a pastor you sort of get a free
  • 00:06:54.170 --> 00:06:57.140
  • pass on stuff, you know?
  • 00:06:57.150 --> 00:06:59.170
  • You know, I actually had people say, "Well, you're a pastor.
  • 00:06:59.180 --> 00:07:02.050
  • How'd you get cancer?"
  • 00:07:02.060 --> 00:07:03.220
  • Well, the problem I have is the problem that we all have.
  • 00:07:03.230 --> 00:07:06.090
  • I suffer from what they call humanity and cancer, along with
  • 00:07:06.100 --> 00:07:11.140
  • other diseases, they're all human diseases, aren't they?
  • 00:07:11.150 --> 00:07:14.120
  • So just because we're Christians,
  • 00:07:14.130 --> 00:07:16.140
  • we don't exit humanity.
  • 00:07:16.150 --> 00:07:18.000
  • We get the same human problems and diseases everyone else gets.
  • 00:07:18.010 --> 00:07:21.250
  • Well, I wanna answer the question,
  • 00:07:21.260 --> 00:07:23.070
  • "Was I ever afraid,"
  • 00:07:23.080 --> 00:07:24.260
  • and I'll do it in a moment but, first, I wanna tell you that you
  • 00:07:24.270 --> 00:07:26.250
  • probably will have a difficult time understanding what
  • 00:07:26.260 --> 00:07:29.060
  • I'm about to say.
  • 00:07:29.070 --> 00:07:31.100
  • It's hard to explain to those who have not experienced cancer
  • 00:07:31.110 --> 00:07:35.290
  • what it's like to have that disease associated
  • 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:39.190
  • with your name.
  • 00:07:39.200 --> 00:07:41.150
  • In fact, you can get inside my skin.
  • 00:07:41.160 --> 00:07:44.150
  • Just stop and think what would you feel right now if somebody
  • 00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:47.060
  • told you you had a disease that could take your life,
  • 00:07:47.070 --> 00:07:49.230
  • what emotions would you be feeling?
  • 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:51.220
  • I had all the same ones.
  • 00:07:51.230 --> 00:07:53.190
  • So disease is ever present with us and the probability is that
  • 00:07:53.200 --> 00:08:00.040
  • you have or will encounter it somewhere along the way.
  • 00:08:00.050 --> 00:08:03.010
  • The probable encounters with disease.
  • 00:08:03.020 --> 00:08:05.250
  • Well, it started back in the Garden.
  • 00:08:05.260 --> 00:08:08.000
  • God created Adam and Eve in a state of perfect health
  • 00:08:08.010 --> 00:08:11.060
  • and their bodies were free from disease.
  • 00:08:11.070 --> 00:08:13.270
  • But then they sinned and the whole order of nature was
  • 00:08:13.280 --> 00:08:17.260
  • convulsed and sickness became a grim reality and death an
  • 00:08:17.270 --> 00:08:21.180
  • unavoidable eventuality.
  • 00:08:21.190 --> 00:08:25.220
  • And at least a portion of our days on this earth, whether we
  • 00:08:25.230 --> 00:08:28.200
  • like it or not, are going to be spent ill or sick or diseased or
  • 00:08:28.210 --> 00:08:32.280
  • injured or wounded or dying.
  • 00:08:32.290 --> 00:08:36.140
  • The loss of health comes on us either suddenly or slowly but on
  • 00:08:36.150 --> 00:08:40.090
  • us all it descends.
  • 00:08:40.100 --> 00:08:43.030
  • One of the things that we shouldn't be surprised at but
  • 00:08:43.040 --> 00:08:45.170
  • because we don't necessarily always read our Bibles the way
  • 00:08:45.180 --> 00:08:48.000
  • we should, we are often surprised to discover how many
  • 00:08:48.010 --> 00:08:51.180
  • of these current kinds of problems that we face are
  • 00:08:51.190 --> 00:08:54.070
  • actually also faced in the people of the Bible.
  • 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:57.270
  • I told you early on that in the Bible there are over 200 people
  • 00:08:57.280 --> 00:09:01.190
  • about whom it is said they were afraid.
  • 00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:03.190
  • Well, you wouldn't believe how many people in the Bible
  • 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:06.080
  • were actually sick.
  • 00:09:06.090 --> 00:09:07.180
  • I went through the Scriptures and I kind of made a little list
  • 00:09:07.190 --> 00:09:09.240
  • of them and I'm going to read this real fast and you won't be
  • 00:09:09.250 --> 00:09:12.000
  • able to write 'em all down, just maybe the names.
  • 00:09:12.010 --> 00:09:14.280
  • But here's just a sampling of the people in the Bible
  • 00:09:14.290 --> 00:09:17.210
  • who were sick.
  • 00:09:17.220 --> 00:09:19.190
  • There's Paul and his thorn in the flesh, and Job who we
  • 00:09:19.200 --> 00:09:22.210
  • already met, sitting in the ash heap.
  • 00:09:22.220 --> 00:09:24.200
  • And there's Lazarus and his terminal illness,
  • 00:09:24.210 --> 00:09:26.290
  • and the woman with the issue of blood, and Naaman
  • 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.110
  • and the disease of leprosy.
  • 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.110
  • And King David with the evil disease that clung to him,
  • 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:34.040
  • and King Asa with his diseased feet.
  • 00:09:34.050 --> 00:09:36.210
  • And King Jehoram and his diseased intestines, and the
  • 00:09:36.220 --> 00:09:39.280
  • people of Galilee who came to Christ
  • 00:09:39.290 --> 00:09:41.260
  • with all kinds of disease.
  • 00:09:41.270 --> 00:09:43.240
  • And Epaphroditus who was sick almost unto death, and Dorcas
  • 00:09:43.250 --> 00:09:47.080
  • who fell sick and died leaving behind a grieving community
  • 00:09:47.090 --> 00:09:51.000
  • of disciples.
  • 00:09:51.010 --> 00:09:52.200
  • I've never heard of a pastor preaching a series of sermons on
  • 00:09:52.210 --> 00:09:55.240
  • the diseased people of the Bible but if he should ever choose to
  • 00:09:55.250 --> 00:09:59.140
  • do so, there would be no lack of material because the Bible has
  • 00:09:59.150 --> 00:10:03.010
  • many, many stories and encounters of people
  • 00:10:03.020 --> 00:10:06.030
  • who were sick.
  • 00:10:06.040 --> 00:10:08.090
  • But the one biblical account that is the poster child for
  • 00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:10.250
  • this message is a man by the name of Hezekiah.
  • 00:10:10.260 --> 00:10:14.230
  • Now, Hezekiah has often been the brunt of some jokes because some
  • 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:17.240
  • people say there's a book in the Bible and the book
  • 00:10:17.250 --> 00:10:20.060
  • is called Hezekiah.
  • 00:10:20.070 --> 00:10:21.160
  • When they want to tell you something and give it biblical
  • 00:10:21.170 --> 00:10:24.030
  • credit they'll say, "It's in Hezekiah 2:3."
  • 00:10:24.040 --> 00:10:26.190
  • Well, let me tell you something.
  • 00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:28.000
  • There is no such book as Hezekiah but there is such
  • 00:10:28.010 --> 00:10:31.040
  • a person and he was one of the kings of Judah.
  • 00:10:31.050 --> 00:10:36.210
  • In fact, he was one of the good kings, maybe one of the great
  • 00:10:36.220 --> 00:10:41.210
  • kings of the Old Testament, who assumed the throne of Judah at
  • 00:10:41.220 --> 00:10:45.150
  • the age of 25 and immediately began to set things back in
  • 00:10:45.160 --> 00:10:49.240
  • order because the nation of Israel had regressed
  • 00:10:49.250 --> 00:10:52.260
  • and had backslidden.
  • 00:10:52.270 --> 00:10:54.060
  • In 2 Chronicles chapter 31 we read: "Then Hezekiah did what
  • 00:10:54.070 --> 00:10:58.240
  • was good and right and true before the Lord his God.
  • 00:10:58.250 --> 00:11:01.280
  • And in every work that he began in the service of the house of
  • 00:11:01.290 --> 00:11:04.250
  • God, and in the law and the commandment, to seek his God,
  • 00:11:04.260 --> 00:11:07.280
  • he did it with all of his heart.
  • 00:11:07.290 --> 00:11:09.180
  • And he prospered."
  • 00:11:09.190 --> 00:11:11.220
  • And the next 10 or 15 years in Judah were among the happiest
  • 00:11:11.230 --> 00:11:15.180
  • years in the history of Judah.
  • 00:11:15.190 --> 00:11:19.060
  • But when Hezekiah turned 39 everything changed.
  • 00:11:19.070 --> 00:11:25.170
  • It says in Isaiah 38, verse 1 that "in those days Hezekiah
  • 00:11:25.180 --> 00:11:30.160
  • was sick and near death.
  • 00:11:30.170 --> 00:11:33.250
  • And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said,
  • 00:11:33.260 --> 00:11:37.050
  • 'Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order,
  • 00:11:37.060 --> 00:11:40.190
  • for you shall die and not live.'"
  • 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:45.010
  • That's like the oncologist coming out after the examination
  • 00:11:45.020 --> 00:11:50.010
  • and saying to you, "You got six months.
  • 00:11:50.020 --> 00:11:55.040
  • Your disease is inoperable.
  • 00:11:55.050 --> 00:11:57.290
  • It's terminal.
  • 00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:59.150
  • There's no hope."
  • 00:11:59.160 --> 00:12:01.190
  • That was the sentence that was given to Hezekiah.
  • 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:03.230
  • Now, Hezekiah is an illustration of what people do when something
  • 00:12:03.240 --> 00:12:10.080
  • like that happens.
  • 00:12:10.090 --> 00:12:11.190
  • We've seen the probable encounters with disease and
  • 00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:14.020
  • we've looked at some primary examples but now I want you to
  • 00:12:14.030 --> 00:12:16.270
  • notice the painful emotions of disease in Hezekiah's response.
  • 00:12:16.280 --> 00:12:22.220
  • What would you do when you first heard that?
  • 00:12:22.230 --> 00:12:24.290
  • Well, you would do exactly what he did if you're a Christian.
  • 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.200
  • He prayed.
  • 00:12:27.210 --> 00:12:29.170
  • It says in Isaiah 38:1-3: "In those days Hezekiah was sick
  • 00:12:29.180 --> 00:12:33.010
  • and near death.
  • 00:12:33.020 --> 00:12:34.110
  • And he turned his face toward the wall, and he prayed to the
  • 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:37.290
  • Lord, and he said, 'Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how
  • 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:41.230
  • I have walked before You in truth with a loyal heart,
  • 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:44.250
  • and have done what is good in Your sight.'
  • 00:12:44.260 --> 00:12:46.260
  • And he wept bitterly."
  • 00:12:46.270 --> 00:12:50.020
  • Though we can't predict how the Lord will answer, we do know--we
  • 00:12:50.030 --> 00:12:53.010
  • do know that tears and prayers are seen and heard by God
  • 00:12:53.020 --> 00:12:59.260
  • when we cry and when we pray.
  • 00:12:59.270 --> 00:13:04.010
  • The prayer was the first emotion and then came the promise.
  • 00:13:04.020 --> 00:13:09.010
  • In Isaiah 38:4 we read: "And the word of the Lord
  • 00:13:09.020 --> 00:13:12.100
  • came to Isaiah, saying, 'Go tell Hezekiah,
  • 00:13:12.110 --> 00:13:17.010
  • Thus says the Lord, the God
  • 00:13:17.020 --> 00:13:18.210
  • of David your father: I have seen your tears; and surely
  • 00:13:18.220 --> 00:13:23.180
  • I will add to your days 15 years.'"
  • 00:13:23.190 --> 00:13:27.090
  • Sometimes we say,
  • 00:13:27.100 --> 00:13:28.270
  • "Well, I've tried everything else and I guess all
  • 00:13:28.280 --> 00:13:31.030
  • that's left is prayer."
  • 00:13:31.040 --> 00:13:32.170
  • And we demote prayer to the bottom of the list when it
  • 00:13:32.180 --> 00:13:35.110
  • should be elevated to the top of the list.
  • 00:13:35.120 --> 00:13:37.180
  • By the way, let's start with prayer.
  • 00:13:37.190 --> 00:13:40.060
  • Let everything else descend from that.
  • 00:13:40.070 --> 00:13:42.230
  • Hezekiah prayed.
  • 00:13:42.240 --> 00:13:44.040
  • Listen to me, and God heard him.
  • 00:13:44.050 --> 00:13:46.290
  • And God answered his prayer and gave him 15 more years.
  • 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:53.030
  • Interesting, though, that God didn't just speak from heaven
  • 00:13:53.040 --> 00:13:57.140
  • and say, "Hezekiah, be healed."
  • 00:13:57.150 --> 00:13:59.150
  • He gave Hezekiah a prescription. You gotta be kidding me.
  • 00:14:01.170 --> 00:14:06.200
  • No, he did.
  • 00:14:06.210 --> 00:14:09.180
  • Why would God do that?
  • 00:14:09.190 --> 00:14:10.280
  • Can't he just heal by saying, "Be healed"?
  • 00:14:10.290 --> 00:14:12.120
  • Absolutely, but also we know that God often works
  • 00:14:12.130 --> 00:14:16.150
  • through means.
  • 00:14:16.160 --> 00:14:18.110
  • Isaiah 38:21: "Let them take a lump of figs, and apply it as a
  • 00:14:18.120 --> 00:14:23.180
  • poultice on the boil, and you shall recover."
  • 00:14:23.190 --> 00:14:27.210
  • Now, that's the first chemotherapy that
  • 00:14:27.220 --> 00:14:30.130
  • I've ever read about in the Bible.
  • 00:14:30.140 --> 00:14:32.230
  • These are called pharmaceutical figs.
  • 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:35.020
  • And this would certainly be an answer to those who have said,
  • 00:14:37.090 --> 00:14:41.020
  • and you've probably heard them, and I have too, "No, no, no, no,
  • 00:14:41.030 --> 00:14:44.070
  • you don't need anything but God.
  • 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:46.010
  • You don't need doctors. You don't need medicine.
  • 00:14:46.020 --> 00:14:48.260
  • Just trust God."
  • 00:14:48.270 --> 00:14:50.060
  • In fact, they've actually--I've heard them say this: "If you
  • 00:14:50.070 --> 00:14:53.030
  • trust in a doctor or if you use medicine it is because of your
  • 00:14:53.040 --> 00:14:56.210
  • lack of faith, that God does not heal that way, that God always
  • 00:14:56.220 --> 00:15:03.000
  • heals without any means."
  • 00:15:03.010 --> 00:15:04.280
  • The only problem with saying that is it's just not true.
  • 00:15:04.290 --> 00:15:09.010
  • God can heal any way he wants.
  • 00:15:09.020 --> 00:15:12.270
  • He can heal with a doctor or without one, by a prescription
  • 00:15:12.280 --> 00:15:17.060
  • or without one.
  • 00:15:17.070 --> 00:15:18.260
  • But in this case, God used a prescription to heal Hezekiah
  • 00:15:18.270 --> 00:15:23.130
  • and I just wanna stop and say I thank God for my doctors.
  • 00:15:23.140 --> 00:15:27.210
  • From the human perspective, I would not be here, apart from
  • 00:15:27.220 --> 00:15:31.220
  • the two men I mentioned earlier in this message.
  • 00:15:31.230 --> 00:15:34.260
  • Was God in that?
  • 00:15:34.270 --> 00:15:36.060
  • Absolutely and I thank God every day for his leading me to them,
  • 00:15:36.070 --> 00:15:41.040
  • for his using them, for his giving them the wisdom and the
  • 00:15:41.050 --> 00:15:44.200
  • knowledge and the education and the wherewithal to deal with
  • 00:15:44.210 --> 00:15:48.020
  • the disease.
  • 00:15:48.030 --> 00:15:49.260
  • And so God used this prescription.
  • 00:15:49.270 --> 00:15:52.230
  • He prescribed something for Hezekiah and when that was
  • 00:15:52.240 --> 00:15:56.220
  • applied, Hezekiah got better.
  • 00:15:56.230 --> 00:16:01.000
  • And then what happened next is what you would expect.
  • 00:16:01.010 --> 00:16:03.010
  • There was a rejoicing, there was a praise party.
  • 00:16:03.020 --> 00:16:06.120
  • This all happened over a period of a few days and so when
  • 00:16:06.130 --> 00:16:09.110
  • Hezekiah realized that he was well and that he was gonna live,
  • 00:16:09.120 --> 00:16:14.000
  • the Bible says that he began to praise God and some of his words
  • 00:16:14.010 --> 00:16:17.240
  • are in Isaiah 38, verses 17 and 20.
  • 00:16:17.250 --> 00:16:20.280
  • He said, "Indeed, it was for my own peace that I had great
  • 00:16:20.290 --> 00:16:23.250
  • bitterness; but You have lovingly delivered my soul
  • 00:16:23.260 --> 00:16:26.280
  • from the pit of corruption.
  • 00:16:26.290 --> 00:16:28.080
  • The Lord was ready to save me; therefore we will sing my songs
  • 00:16:28.090 --> 00:16:31.230
  • with stringed instruments all the days of our life,
  • 00:16:31.240 --> 00:16:34.170
  • in the house of the Lord."
  • 00:16:34.180 --> 00:16:37.010
  • Hezekiah looked back and, in experiencing God's healing,
  • 00:16:37.020 --> 00:16:41.030
  • he testified to the Lord for his goodness.
  • 00:16:41.040 --> 00:16:45.090
  • Our God is a healer and he's able to do above and beyond
  • 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:49.180
  • all that we ask or think.
  • 00:16:49.190 --> 00:16:52.140
  • Often when we pray for healing, we are healed and Hezekiah
  • 00:16:52.150 --> 00:16:58.210
  • was healed.
  • 00:16:58.220 --> 00:17:00.030
  • Now, I wish I could tell you that this is the end of
  • 00:17:00.040 --> 00:17:03.170
  • the story that Hezekiah lived out his life and honored
  • 00:17:03.180 --> 00:17:06.140
  • the Lord with those years
  • 00:17:06.150 --> 00:17:08.180
  • that he was given and that God blessed him
  • 00:17:08.190 --> 00:17:11.050
  • abundantly, and Hezekiah was so grateful to be healed
  • 00:17:11.060 --> 00:17:13.290
  • that he lived every day in obedience to the Lord.
  • 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:17.290
  • But he did not.
  • 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:20.020
  • And there's a problem.
  • 00:17:20.030 --> 00:17:21.190
  • Let me tell you what happened.
  • 00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:23.250
  • The Bible tells us that during his extended 15 years, Hezekiah
  • 00:17:23.260 --> 00:17:29.110
  • made some very bad mistakes.
  • 00:17:29.120 --> 00:17:32.120
  • First thing he did was he allowed the Babylonians to come
  • 00:17:32.130 --> 00:17:35.230
  • into Israel and Hezekiah had become very enamored with his
  • 00:17:35.240 --> 00:17:40.290
  • wealth, with his collection of treasures.
  • 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:43.290
  • So he invited the Babylonians to come and he showed them the
  • 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:47.180
  • treasures of Israel.
  • 00:17:47.190 --> 00:17:50.010
  • Why would he do that?
  • 00:17:50.020 --> 00:17:51.110
  • It was surely nothing more than his arrogant pride, his desire
  • 00:17:51.120 --> 00:17:57.120
  • to be viewed as someone important with all of these
  • 00:17:57.130 --> 00:18:01.180
  • many treasures.
  • 00:18:01.190 --> 00:18:02.280
  • Well, guess what?
  • 00:18:02.290 --> 00:18:05.010
  • The Babylonians came and they invaded the nation and, during
  • 00:18:05.020 --> 00:18:10.190
  • this time, great evil took place in Judah because of the arrogant
  • 00:18:10.200 --> 00:18:16.160
  • pride of Hezekiah.
  • 00:18:16.170 --> 00:18:20.040
  • But that's not the worst.
  • 00:18:20.050 --> 00:18:22.150
  • Up until this time in his life, King Hezekiah had no son.
  • 00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:26.160
  • After his healing by the Lord, he had a son whose name
  • 00:18:26.170 --> 00:18:30.200
  • was Manasseh, and Manasseh, ladies and gentlemen, is
  • 00:18:30.210 --> 00:18:35.030
  • one of the most evil people you will ever meet in the Bible.
  • 00:18:35.040 --> 00:18:39.230
  • He was a despotic man, a wicked cruel man.
  • 00:18:39.240 --> 00:18:46.010
  • I will say this in all candor: Judah would have been better off
  • 00:18:46.020 --> 00:18:51.020
  • if Hezekiah had died because when God gave him his life,
  • 00:18:53.020 --> 00:18:58.020
  • he used the life that was given to him by God to bring ruin
  • 00:19:00.170 --> 00:19:04.270
  • and shame and sin upon his nation through his own actions
  • 00:19:04.280 --> 00:19:10.230
  • and especially through the actions of Manasseh.
  • 00:19:10.240 --> 00:19:14.260
  • There are some things that are worse than disease.
  • 00:19:14.270 --> 00:19:19.260
  • And one of those things happened to Hezekiah.
  • 00:19:19.270 --> 00:19:22.270
  • Now, we've talked about the probable encounters with disease
  • 00:19:22.280 --> 00:19:27.260
  • and the primary examples of disease and the painful emotions
  • 00:19:27.270 --> 00:19:31.110
  • of disease.
  • 00:19:31.120 --> 00:19:32.240
  • So I wanna finish now with some practical encouragements
  • 00:19:32.250 --> 00:19:37.220
  • for disease.
  • 00:19:37.230 --> 00:19:39.040
  • If Hezekiah were here today, here are some of the things
  • 00:19:39.050 --> 00:19:41.210
  • he might say to us.
  • 00:19:41.220 --> 00:19:44.010
  • What we should do if we're battling an illness, if disease
  • 00:19:44.020 --> 00:19:48.030
  • runs in our family, if we're apprehensive about imagined
  • 00:19:48.040 --> 00:19:52.150
  • sickness or future disability, if we are afraid because of
  • 00:19:52.160 --> 00:19:56.210
  • disease or fearful that it might come into our lives or perhaps
  • 00:19:56.220 --> 00:20:00.180
  • it has and we're now really afraid.
  • 00:20:00.190 --> 00:20:03.150
  • Here's what Hezekiah might tell us if he could speak
  • 00:20:03.160 --> 00:20:05.280
  • into our situation.
  • 00:20:05.290 --> 00:20:07.080
  • Number one: Control your mind.
  • 00:20:07.090 --> 00:20:10.180
  • Control your mind.
  • 00:20:10.190 --> 00:20:11.280
  • 2 Timothy 1:7: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear,
  • 00:20:11.290 --> 00:20:16.270
  • but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
  • 00:20:16.280 --> 00:20:22.090
  • You look at people who battle diseases and become victorious
  • 00:20:22.100 --> 00:20:25.230
  • in getting past the deadlines and you will discover that,
  • 00:20:25.240 --> 00:20:29.080
  • for many of them, it wasn't even just the medicine
  • 00:20:29.090 --> 00:20:31.190
  • or the good doctors or the therapy or whatever.
  • 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:34.240
  • It was their own personal attitude,
  • 00:20:34.250 --> 00:20:37.080
  • their own personal fortitude.
  • 00:20:37.090 --> 00:20:39.010
  • And I found a verse of Scripture this week that I had never seen
  • 00:20:39.020 --> 00:20:41.220
  • before, at least in this light.
  • 00:20:41.230 --> 00:20:43.290
  • I wrote it down and I wanna give it to you.
  • 00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:46.110
  • It's Proverbs 18:14 and it says this: "The spirit of a man will
  • 00:20:46.120 --> 00:20:52.070
  • sustain him in his sickness."
  • 00:20:52.080 --> 00:20:55.230
  • Sometimes you begin to feel sorry for yourself.
  • 00:20:55.240 --> 00:20:58.030
  • We say, "Why me? Why now?"
  • 00:20:58.040 --> 00:20:59.250
  • And we become--we become absorbed in self-pity.
  • 00:20:59.260 --> 00:21:03.160
  • We all go through that to some degree.
  • 00:21:03.170 --> 00:21:05.120
  • But we have to get through it to the other side and say,
  • 00:21:05.130 --> 00:21:08.140
  • "This is what God has allowed in my life.
  • 00:21:08.150 --> 00:21:10.180
  • I'm not going to fight it.
  • 00:21:10.190 --> 00:21:11.280
  • I will embrace it and together, God, you and I will go forward
  • 00:21:11.290 --> 00:21:16.000
  • and make what you want out of this in my life."
  • 00:21:16.010 --> 00:21:20.160
  • Control your mind.
  • 00:21:20.170 --> 00:21:21.260
  • Secondly, count your blessings.
  • 00:21:21.270 --> 00:21:24.210
  • You say, "Jeremiah, you've got to be kidding?
  • 00:21:24.220 --> 00:21:26.160
  • I've got cancer.
  • 00:21:26.170 --> 00:21:27.260
  • You want me to count my blessings?"
  • 00:21:27.270 --> 00:21:30.000
  • Well, do you know, the Bible does say,
  • 00:21:30.010 --> 00:21:31.100
  • "In everything, give thanks."
  • 00:21:31.110 --> 00:21:32.270
  • It doesn't say, "For everything," but it says,
  • 00:21:32.280 --> 00:21:34.280
  • "In everything."
  • 00:21:34.290 --> 00:21:36.220
  • So what should you be thankful for?
  • 00:21:36.230 --> 00:21:39.150
  • Though we're sick we can rejoice in the prayers of our friends,
  • 00:21:39.160 --> 00:21:43.130
  • in the note of a loved one, in the medical care of
  • 00:21:43.140 --> 00:21:45.260
  • a conscientious nurse, in the smile of a doctor, in the verse
  • 00:21:45.270 --> 00:21:49.240
  • of a hymn that comes to mind, in the grin of a grandchild.
  • 00:21:49.250 --> 00:21:54.110
  • Training ourselves to spot these blessings like wildflowers in
  • 00:21:54.120 --> 00:21:58.180
  • a forest is the secret to learning to count it all joy.
  • 00:21:58.190 --> 00:22:04.150
  • Not only control your mind and count your blessings,
  • 00:22:04.160 --> 00:22:07.060
  • but continue your work.
  • 00:22:07.070 --> 00:22:09.070
  • Ephesians tells us that "we are God's workmanship, created in
  • 00:22:10.280 --> 00:22:14.270
  • Christ Jesus unto good works except when we are sick."
  • 00:22:14.280 --> 00:22:18.060
  • No, that's not what it says, is it?
  • 00:22:21.270 --> 00:22:24.210
  • It says: "We are his workmanship, created unto Christ
  • 00:22:24.220 --> 00:22:28.270
  • Jesus unto good works."
  • 00:22:28.280 --> 00:22:32.160
  • When we are ill we need to continue the work
  • 00:22:32.170 --> 00:22:36.010
  • that God has given us to do.
  • 00:22:36.020 --> 00:22:37.110
  • You say, "Well, how am I supposed to do that?"
  • 00:22:37.120 --> 00:22:39.050
  • I was absent from the pulpit for a number of weeks.
  • 00:22:39.060 --> 00:22:41.160
  • I couldn't preach.
  • 00:22:41.170 --> 00:22:44.060
  • But I could still do some things that I normally did.
  • 00:22:44.070 --> 00:22:50.220
  • I could read, I could research, I could write.
  • 00:22:50.230 --> 00:22:55.090
  • Figure out how much of it you can do.
  • 00:22:55.100 --> 00:22:57.010
  • Do as much of it as you can because work is a therapy.
  • 00:22:57.020 --> 00:23:00.040
  • Number four, claim your promises.
  • 00:23:03.070 --> 00:23:07.130
  • And there are so many of them.
  • 00:23:07.140 --> 00:23:08.230
  • And I wanna give you one that's very special to me that I've
  • 00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:11.030
  • never shared from a pulpit before 'cause I never
  • 00:23:11.040 --> 00:23:14.050
  • understood it until this week and it's so unique.
  • 00:23:14.060 --> 00:23:16.070
  • It's John 11:4 and the context of the promise is the Lord Jesus
  • 00:23:16.080 --> 00:23:21.240
  • and Lazarus and, remember, Lazarus was sick and they sent
  • 00:23:21.250 --> 00:23:26.020
  • for Jesus and before he could come, Lazarus died.
  • 00:23:26.030 --> 00:23:30.130
  • And in John 11:4, we have these words: "When Jesus heard that,
  • 00:23:30.140 --> 00:23:34.140
  • He said, 'This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory
  • 00:23:34.150 --> 00:23:39.050
  • of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'"
  • 00:23:39.060 --> 00:23:43.190
  • For the Christian, our sickness never ends in death.
  • 00:23:43.200 --> 00:23:47.010
  • It may include death but we all know that's not the end,
  • 00:23:47.020 --> 00:23:53.160
  • that there is life after death.
  • 00:23:53.170 --> 00:23:57.240
  • So it is true to say that God heals everybody.
  • 00:23:57.250 --> 00:24:00.080
  • He heals some of us down here, he heals all of us up there.
  • 00:24:00.090 --> 00:24:03.160
  • And our healing is in the Atonement because what Jesus did
  • 00:24:03.170 --> 00:24:06.110
  • on the cross makes it possible for us to go to heaven and
  • 00:24:06.120 --> 00:24:09.270
  • ultimately find our healing in his person.
  • 00:24:09.280 --> 00:24:13.240
  • So if heaven is the worst thing that can happen to us,
  • 00:24:16.290 --> 00:24:19.250
  • we shouldn't despair, even amid medical emergencies
  • 00:24:19.260 --> 00:24:23.130
  • of the loss of health.
  • 00:24:23.140 --> 00:24:25.140
  • And here's why.
  • 00:24:25.150 --> 00:24:27.120
  • We have a Great Physician whose own tomb is empty.
  • 00:24:27.130 --> 00:24:30.230
  • We have a heavenly home whose doors are open.
  • 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:37.060
  • We have a sympathetic Savior whose arms are outstretched,
  • 00:24:37.070 --> 00:24:42.070
  • reminding us that we don't need to have a spirit of fear
  • 00:24:42.080 --> 00:24:46.220
  • but of power, and of love, and of a strong mind.
  • 00:24:46.230 --> 00:24:51.230
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's program
  • 00:24:55.150 --> 00:24:58.020
  • right after this.
  • 00:24:58.030 --> 00:25:00.100
  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:25:01.250 --> 00:25:04.090
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:25:04.100 --> 00:25:07.130
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:25:07.140 --> 00:25:10.150
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:25:10.160 --> 00:25:12.070
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:25:12.080 --> 00:25:15.170
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power
  • 00:25:15.180 --> 00:25:19.080
  • and of love and of a sound mind.
  • 00:25:19.090 --> 00:25:21.150
  • That's why "New York Times" bestselling author,
  • 00:25:21.160 --> 00:25:23.140

  • announcer: And now with one last word for today's program,
  • 00:25:46.020 --> 00:25:48.280
  • here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:48.290 --> 00:25:51.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: I hope you've been encouraged by today's
  • 00:25:52.010 --> 00:25:53.250
  • message of hope and healing.
  • 00:25:53.260 --> 00:25:55.190
  • While sickness is a reality here in our fallen world, we know
  • 00:25:55.200 --> 00:25:59.180
  • that it will have no place in the eternal home God
  • 00:25:59.190 --> 00:26:03.100
  • is preparing even now for those who believe in him
  • 00:26:03.110 --> 00:26:06.250
  • through his Son Jesus Christ.
  • 00:26:06.260 --> 00:26:09.010
  • Do you know with certainty that you'll be spending your eternity
  • 00:26:09.020 --> 00:26:12.160
  • in heaven, living in a glorified body free from every affliction
  • 00:26:12.170 --> 00:26:16.290
  • and imperfection?
  • 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:18.240
  • I pray that you do and that you're growing daily
  • 00:26:18.250 --> 00:26:22.240
  • in your relationship with Christ.
  • 00:26:22.250 --> 00:26:24.240
  • I'd like to send you two free resources to help you move
  • 00:26:24.250 --> 00:26:27.290
  • forward in your Christian walk.
  • 00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:29.230
  • One is a booklet called "Your Greatest Turning Point,"
  • 00:26:29.240 --> 00:26:32.160
  • and the other is our monthly devotional magazine,
  • 00:26:32.170 --> 00:26:35.140
  • "Turning Points."
  • 00:26:35.150 --> 00:26:37.020
  • I'll gladly send both of these to you today, again, free of
  • 00:26:37.030 --> 00:26:40.020
  • charge, if you'll contact us here at Turning Point.
  • 00:26:40.030 --> 00:26:44.080
  • announcer: Next time on, "Turning Point."
  • 00:26:46.170 --> 00:26:48.210
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The word "fret" means to gnaw at, like a rat
  • 00:26:48.220 --> 00:26:52.290
  • gnawing at a rope or something.
  • 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:54.190
  • And the other meaning is to have a kind of like an explosive
  • 00:26:54.200 --> 00:26:57.220
  • burst of flame and that's what worry is like.
  • 00:26:57.230 --> 00:27:02.240
  • It's like something gnawing at you on the inside.
  • 00:27:02.250 --> 00:27:04.250
  • It's like something burning on the inside and so the Lord Jesus
  • 00:27:04.260 --> 00:27:07.180
  • says, "When you look out at how life seems to be laying out
  • 00:27:07.190 --> 00:27:09.230
  • in front of you, don't fret.
  • 00:27:09.240 --> 00:27:11.230
  • Kill the rat, put out the fire, get on with your life.
  • 00:27:11.240 --> 00:27:14.190
  • announcer: Thank you for being with us today.
  • 00:27:15.260 --> 00:27:18.010
  • Join us next time for Dr. Jeremiah's message,
  • 00:27:18.020 --> 00:27:21.120
  • "Debt: The Fear of Financial Collapse,"
  • 00:27:21.130 --> 00:27:23.160
  • here on "Turning Point."
  • 00:27:23.170 --> 00:27:26.020
