  • 00:00:19.260 --> 00:00:22.180
  • Veronica: Are you talking to me?
  • 00:00:22.190 --> 00:00:25.090
  • Okay, I can do this.
  • 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:28.250
  • Here's the deal, I need to check on my savings account and I have
  • 00:00:28.260 --> 00:00:32.190
  • a special retirement fund.
  • 00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:34.250
  • Fear: Yes, your retirement fund.
  • 00:00:34.260 --> 00:00:37.090
  • For heaven's sake, you must check
  • 00:00:37.100 --> 00:00:39.230
  • that meager retirement fund.
  • 00:00:39.240 --> 00:00:42.080
  • Veronica: It's happening.
  • 00:00:42.090 --> 00:00:43.220
  • Kimberly: What's happening?
  • 00:00:43.230 --> 00:00:45.120
  • Veronica: It's here, I know it, I know it.
  • 00:00:45.130 --> 00:00:48.150
  • Fear: Hello, Veronica.
  • 00:00:48.160 --> 00:00:51.140
  • Veronica: Ignore him.
  • 00:00:51.150 --> 00:00:52.280
  • I am not afraid.
  • 00:00:52.290 --> 00:00:54.150
  • What's your name?
  • 00:00:54.160 --> 00:00:55.250
  • Kimberly: Kimberly.
  • 00:00:55.260 --> 00:00:57.070
  • Veronica: Kimberly, I would like you to know that
  • 00:00:57.080 --> 00:00:59.000
  • I am not afraid right now.
  • 00:00:59.010 --> 00:01:00.210
  • Kimberly: That's good to know.
  • 00:01:00.220 --> 00:01:02.070
  • Veronica: My name is Veronica Trimble.
  • 00:01:02.080 --> 00:01:04.100
  • Fear: Trimble, Tremble, how appropriate.
  • 00:01:04.110 --> 00:01:09.040
  • Veronica: What do you mean by that?
  • 00:01:09.050 --> 00:01:11.030
  • Fear: Tremble so suits you because you're in a bank and
  • 00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:13.260
  • when you come to the bank to talk money, you become afraid.
  • 00:01:13.270 --> 00:01:18.000
  • Veronica: I am not afraid.
  • 00:01:18.010 --> 00:01:19.230
  • Fear: Yes, you are.
  • 00:01:19.240 --> 00:01:21.090
  • Veronica: No, I'm not.
  • 00:01:21.100 --> 00:01:22.250
  • Kimberly: Ms. Trimble, should I be afraid right now?
  • 00:01:22.260 --> 00:01:25.250
  • Veronica: Do you see anything suspicious over here?
  • 00:01:25.260 --> 00:01:28.050
  • Kimberly: No.
  • 00:01:28.060 --> 00:01:30.110
  • Fear: Isn't this rich?
  • 00:01:30.120 --> 00:01:33.220
  • I'm scaring you and now you're scaring the poor little teller.
  • 00:01:33.230 --> 00:01:38.160
  • Veronica: Am I scaring you?
  • 00:01:38.170 --> 00:01:40.070
  • Kimberly: Kind of.
  • 00:01:40.080 --> 00:01:42.010
  • Fear: Veronica, may I remind you that you are about
  • 00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:45.140
  • three paychecks away from financial collapse?
  • 00:01:45.150 --> 00:01:49.180
  • Veronica: That is not true.
  • 00:01:49.190 --> 00:01:51.140
  • Fear: What would happen if you lost your job?
  • 00:01:51.150 --> 00:01:53.170
  • Veronica: Look, I am telling you to scram.
  • 00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:56.290
  • Fear: But Veronica, your savings is dwindling.
  • 00:01:57.000 --> 00:02:00.070
  • You've lost tons of money in the stock market.
  • 00:02:00.080 --> 00:02:02.220
  • You're upside down on your mortgage and then there is
  • 00:02:02.230 --> 00:02:05.200
  • that situation with the identity theft.
  • 00:02:05.210 --> 00:02:08.230
  • Veronica: Theft? Kimberly: Theft?
  • 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:10.130
  • Veronica: Oh, there was no theft.
  • 00:02:10.140 --> 00:02:12.040
  • male: Is everything okay here?
  • 00:02:12.050 --> 00:02:13.210
  • Kimberly: I don't know. Is everything okay here?
  • 00:02:13.220 --> 00:02:16.060
  • Veronica: I don't know. Is everything okay here?
  • 00:02:16.070 --> 00:02:19.230
  • Fear: I would like to say yes
  • 00:02:19.240 --> 00:02:22.050
  • but because I'm fear, I'll have to say no.
  • 00:02:22.060 --> 00:02:24.230
  • Veronica: You know, I am so sick and tired of you.
  • 00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:27.130
  • May I have a moment please?
  • 00:02:27.140 --> 00:02:30.070
  • Look at what you've done, you've embarrass me in front
  • 00:02:30.080 --> 00:02:32.250
  • of all these nice people.
  • 00:02:32.260 --> 00:02:34.200
  • Fear: This embarrassment doesn't compare to how
  • 00:02:34.210 --> 00:02:37.040
  • humiliated you'll be when you run out of money
  • 00:02:37.050 --> 00:02:39.280
  • and have to go live with your parents.
  • 00:02:39.290 --> 00:02:42.100
  • Veronica: That is it.
  • 00:02:42.110 --> 00:02:46.160
  • Here, this is for you.
  • 00:02:46.170 --> 00:02:49.110
  • Fear: What's this?
  • 00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:50.220
  • It says final notice.
  • 00:02:50.230 --> 00:02:52.140
  • Veronica: That's right, it's the final notice that I'll
  • 00:02:52.150 --> 00:02:54.070
  • no longer be bullied by you.
  • 00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:56.040
  • Fear: That is quite categorically impossible.
  • 00:02:56.050 --> 00:02:59.140
  • I've been scaring you about debt for years.
  • 00:02:59.150 --> 00:03:02.230
  • Veronica: Well, that ends today.
  • 00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:06.190
  • Here, Sign it.
  • 00:03:07.230 --> 00:03:09.120
  • Fear: Sign it?
  • 00:03:09.130 --> 00:03:10.220
  • Veronica: Sign it, God has given me the faith to face you
  • 00:03:10.230 --> 00:03:13.150
  • down and you're going to sign over the title to my heart
  • 00:03:13.160 --> 00:03:16.150
  • and soul right now.
  • 00:03:16.160 --> 00:03:17.250
  • Fear: This is all so very ridiculous.
  • 00:03:17.260 --> 00:03:19.150
  • Veronica: Sign it.
  • 00:03:19.160 --> 00:03:20.250
  • Fear: Okay, I'll sign it.
  • 00:03:20.260 --> 00:03:22.170
  • Here.
  • 00:03:22.180 --> 00:03:24.110
  • Veronica: Look who's out of a job now.
  • 00:03:24.120 --> 00:03:28.140
  • Fear: You haven't seen the last of me yet.
  • 00:03:28.150 --> 00:03:32.010
  • Veronica: Leave me alone.
  • 00:03:32.020 --> 00:03:36.110
  • You know, I think my business here is finished.
  • 00:03:40.210 --> 00:03:43.120
  • Thank you so much.
  • 00:03:43.130 --> 00:03:45.030
  • I tell you I faced down my financial fears
  • 00:03:45.040 --> 00:03:47.060
  • and I feel terrific.
  • 00:03:47.070 --> 00:03:49.080
  • Take care.
  • 00:03:49.090 --> 00:03:50.280
  • Kimberly: Oh, Ms. Trimble, maybe next time you can just
  • 00:03:50.290 --> 00:03:54.000
  • use the ATMs located outside the building.
  • 00:03:54.010 --> 00:03:56.240
  • Veronica: Oh, that's a good idea.
  • 00:03:56.250 --> 00:03:58.200
  • Thank you, bye.
  • 00:03:58.210 --> 00:04:00.280
  • 00:04:01.230 --> 00:04:11.230
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Well, for many of us, just thinking about
  • 00:04:13.110 --> 00:04:15.240
  • finances is enough to raise our pulse and make our palms sweat.
  • 00:04:15.250 --> 00:04:20.060
  • It can happen when we put our trust in money instead of God.
  • 00:04:20.070 --> 00:04:23.290
  • Maybe that's why our currency proclaims "In God We Trust."
  • 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.290
  • We need that reminder.
  • 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:30.100
  • Does our fragile economy leave you insecure?
  • 00:04:30.110 --> 00:04:34.010
  • Well, you're not alone.
  • 00:04:34.020 --> 00:04:35.230
  • David also dealt with insecurity in the Bible, but God spoke
  • 00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:39.040
  • to his heart and he speaks to ours with seven principles
  • 00:04:39.050 --> 00:04:43.070
  • for letting go of things that promise earthly security
  • 00:04:43.080 --> 00:04:46.270
  • and embracing things of eternal value.
  • 00:04:46.280 --> 00:04:50.200
  • So, join me in exploring those principles and dealing with
  • 00:04:50.210 --> 00:04:54.190
  • Debt: The Fear of Financial Collapse, the latest in our
  • 00:04:54.200 --> 00:04:58.180
  • ten-part teaching series, What Are You Afraid Of?

  • Facing Down Your Fears With Faith.
  • 00:05:02.220 --> 00:05:06.000
  • You'll find that when you depend on God's faithfulness,
  • 00:05:06.010 --> 00:05:09.060
  • you will never be disappointed.
  • 00:05:09.070 --> 00:05:11.170
  • It's all next right here on "Turning Point."
  • 00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:15.130
  • male announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:05:16.110 --> 00:05:18.160
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:05:18.170 --> 00:05:21.210
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:05:21.220 --> 00:05:24.120
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:05:24.130 --> 00:05:26.060
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:05:26.070 --> 00:05:29.150
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear,
  • 00:05:29.160 --> 00:05:32.120
  • but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
  • 00:05:32.130 --> 00:05:35.130

  • 00:05:56.210 --> 00:05:58.260
  • 00:06:01.170 --> 00:06:07.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: When we've lost our home, our possession,
  • 00:06:08.120 --> 00:06:11.030
  • our bank account, and our investments, and the very
  • 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:14.000
  • concept of financial security has been swept away and
  • 00:06:14.010 --> 00:06:17.200
  • we have nothing left, or if we find ourselves fearing that
  • 00:06:17.210 --> 00:06:22.150
  • that could happen to us, where do we turn?
  • 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:28.080
  • Does God have anything to say that will give us comfort?
  • 00:06:28.090 --> 00:06:32.180
  • And of course, you know that he does.
  • 00:06:32.190 --> 00:06:35.290
  • And the Bible itself is a book of comfort.
  • 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:38.240
  • The Psalms in our Bible is the go-to book for comfort and
  • 00:06:38.250 --> 00:06:42.170
  • one of my favorite psalms we're going to look at today for a few
  • 00:06:42.180 --> 00:06:45.260
  • moments and that's Psalm 37.
  • 00:06:45.270 --> 00:06:49.010
  • This psalm speaks to our hearts when the fear of financial
  • 00:06:49.020 --> 00:06:54.120
  • calamity is stalking us.
  • 00:06:54.130 --> 00:06:57.090
  • How should we respond?
  • 00:06:57.100 --> 00:06:58.270
  • When we look out at a world and we're doing all the right
  • 00:06:58.280 --> 00:07:01.280
  • things, we're obeying God, we're coming to church, we're raising
  • 00:07:01.290 --> 00:07:05.050
  • our families in a godly way, we're tithing, we're doing all
  • 00:07:05.060 --> 00:07:08.160
  • the things we know we should do, and we're failing,
  • 00:07:08.170 --> 00:07:11.180
  • and the people we know who don't do any of those things,
  • 00:07:11.190 --> 00:07:14.150
  • in fact, do a lot of evil things,
  • 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:15.250
  • they seem to be succeeding.
  • 00:07:15.260 --> 00:07:18.010
  • How can that be right, and why is that fair,
  • 00:07:18.020 --> 00:07:20.110
  • and why does it happen?
  • 00:07:20.120 --> 00:07:23.290
  • I would like to suggest to you that there are two major
  • 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:27.000
  • Scriptures in the Bible that deal with that and it's kind of
  • 00:07:27.010 --> 00:07:29.290
  • easy to remember them.
  • 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:31.270
  • One of them is Psalm 37 and the other is Psalm 73.
  • 00:07:31.280 --> 00:07:38.090
  • I would like to suggest to you that Psalm 37 is an incredible
  • 00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:41.090
  • portion of Scripture for our discussion today because
  • 00:07:41.100 --> 00:07:44.270
  • it is a simple statement of some things Almighty God wants us
  • 00:07:44.280 --> 00:07:49.150
  • to do when we're feeling insecure, not just about life,
  • 00:07:49.160 --> 00:07:53.230
  • but about everything.
  • 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:56.070
  • Sometimes when you read the Psalms, you have to read and
  • 00:07:56.080 --> 00:07:58.130
  • then you develop principles having read it.
  • 00:07:58.140 --> 00:08:01.020
  • Here the principles are just stuck right in the Psalm.
  • 00:08:01.030 --> 00:08:04.020
  • There are seven of them here in the first few verses,
  • 00:08:04.030 --> 00:08:06.250
  • just places where God, through the Psalms, says to us,
  • 00:08:06.260 --> 00:08:10.100
  • "Here's what you should do."
  • 00:08:10.110 --> 00:08:12.160
  • I kind of like that because it's always helpful when you know
  • 00:08:12.170 --> 00:08:15.050
  • what you're supposed to do.
  • 00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:16.150
  • And it begins here in the third verse where we're told,
  • 00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:20.120
  • "Decide to trust in the Lord."
  • 00:08:20.130 --> 00:08:23.130
  • Chapter 37, verse 3 says, "Trust in the Lord."
  • 00:08:23.140 --> 00:08:29.100
  • I've underlined that in my Bible, "Trust in the Lord."
  • 00:08:29.110 --> 00:08:34.280
  • This is one of the themes of the Psalms to trust in the Lord.
  • 00:08:34.290 --> 00:08:38.290
  • And, you know, that's very important in this discussion
  • 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:40.240
  • because this whole issue of financial stability is an issue
  • 00:08:40.250 --> 00:08:43.180
  • of trust.
  • 00:08:43.190 --> 00:08:45.040
  • We even put things in what we call trusts, and we put our
  • 00:08:45.050 --> 00:08:49.150
  • trust in people to care for those things.
  • 00:08:49.160 --> 00:08:52.150
  • And here the Bible says, if you want to survive the uncertainty
  • 00:08:52.160 --> 00:08:56.190
  • of life as a follower of God, you need to learn to put
  • 00:08:56.200 --> 00:09:01.160
  • your trust in God.
  • 00:09:01.170 --> 00:09:04.110
  • And that's a decision that you make,
  • 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:06.270
  • you decide to trust in the Lord.
  • 00:09:06.280 --> 00:09:11.100
  • This is mentioned three times in Psalm 37.
  • 00:09:11.110 --> 00:09:15.010
  • Now, everybody has to trust in something.
  • 00:09:15.020 --> 00:09:19.140
  • If you put all your trust in your resources,
  • 00:09:19.150 --> 00:09:23.040
  • you're probably gonna find disappointment along the way.
  • 00:09:23.050 --> 00:09:26.170
  • If you put all of your trust in what you've been able to amass
  • 00:09:26.180 --> 00:09:29.110
  • out of your work on this earth, you're never gonna feel a sense
  • 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:33.070
  • of great security because if you put it in the bank,
  • 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:35.230
  • what if the bank fails?
  • 00:09:35.240 --> 00:09:37.160
  • If you invest it in the stock market,
  • 00:09:37.170 --> 00:09:39.070
  • what if it goes upside down?
  • 00:09:39.080 --> 00:09:41.080
  • If you get it converted to gold and silver and put it in your
  • 00:09:41.090 --> 00:09:43.280
  • safe at home, what if somebody breaks in and steals it?
  • 00:09:43.290 --> 00:09:47.230
  • Where can you find something to put your trust
  • 00:09:47.240 --> 00:09:50.050
  • in that will not fail you?
  • 00:09:50.060 --> 00:09:52.000
  • The psalmist says, trust in God.
  • 00:09:52.010 --> 00:09:56.060
  • And let me just suggest to you that this is not emotional.
  • 00:09:56.070 --> 00:09:59.210
  • This is not some feeling that you have.
  • 00:09:59.220 --> 00:10:02.200
  • When you trust in God, you make a decision to do that.
  • 00:10:02.210 --> 00:10:06.190
  • I've been very convinced of that more and more of late,
  • 00:10:06.200 --> 00:10:09.100
  • even when it comes to the matter salvation.
  • 00:10:09.110 --> 00:10:11.150
  • How does a person become a Christian?
  • 00:10:11.160 --> 00:10:13.270
  • That person decides to put their trust in God?
  • 00:10:13.280 --> 00:10:17.130
  • Does that mean they have all of the answers to all the questions
  • 00:10:17.140 --> 00:10:20.020
  • they might ever have about being a Christian?
  • 00:10:20.030 --> 00:10:22.010
  • Absolutely not, but there comes a time when they have enough
  • 00:10:22.020 --> 00:10:24.260
  • answers that they say, "I am gonna put my trust in God,"
  • 00:10:24.270 --> 00:10:28.100
  • and they make the decision to do it.
  • 00:10:28.110 --> 00:10:30.050
  • It's a choice.
  • 00:10:30.060 --> 00:10:31.150
  • And when, as Christians, we're dealing with the uncertainties
  • 00:10:31.160 --> 00:10:34.030
  • of life, we have to make that same choice, don't we?
  • 00:10:34.040 --> 00:10:37.160
  • What about what's going on in this country?
  • 00:10:37.170 --> 00:10:40.020
  • Where are we going financially?
  • 00:10:40.030 --> 00:10:42.130
  • Are the government officials getting us in so much debt that
  • 00:10:42.140 --> 00:10:46.050
  • it's all gonna come down on us like a house of cards?
  • 00:10:46.060 --> 00:10:48.260
  • Is inflation gonna go crazy? I don't know.
  • 00:10:48.270 --> 00:10:51.110
  • I don't put my trust in any of those things.
  • 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:52.290
  • I put my trust in God, and I know that God will not fail me.
  • 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:58.200
  • Beginning at the very beginning of this is a choice
  • 00:10:58.210 --> 00:11:02.000
  • that a person makes to put their trust in God.
  • 00:11:02.010 --> 00:11:05.080
  • If you look down in your Bibles at verse 25, here's an affirming
  • 00:11:05.090 --> 00:11:08.270
  • verse, "I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen
  • 00:11:08.280 --> 00:11:14.000
  • the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread."
  • 00:11:14.010 --> 00:11:19.180
  • Paul said in the New Testament, "My God shall supply all your
  • 00:11:19.190 --> 00:11:23.180
  • need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
  • 00:11:23.190 --> 00:11:27.270
  • I'm here to tell you today, God is trustworthy.
  • 00:11:27.280 --> 00:11:30.040
  • You can put your trust in him.
  • 00:11:30.050 --> 00:11:32.030
  • He will help you in every situation.
  • 00:11:32.040 --> 00:11:34.250
  • 2 Corinthians 9:8 says, "God is able to make all grace abound
  • 00:11:34.260 --> 00:11:39.150
  • toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all
  • 00:11:39.160 --> 00:11:43.240
  • things, will have an abundance for every good work."
  • 00:11:43.250 --> 00:11:47.020
  • Go through the Bible and you will find promise after promise
  • 00:11:47.030 --> 00:11:50.060
  • that just simply underscores this truth that when you put
  • 00:11:50.070 --> 00:11:53.200
  • your trust in God, you have found the one place where you
  • 00:11:53.210 --> 00:11:58.070
  • will not be discouraged or disappointed.
  • 00:11:58.080 --> 00:12:01.110
  • And then the next part of the verse gives us our next
  • 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:03.290
  • instruction, "Trust in the Lord and do good.
  • 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:09.130
  • Trust in the Lord and do good."
  • 00:12:09.140 --> 00:12:12.190
  • That's kind of interesting, isn't it?
  • 00:12:12.200 --> 00:12:14.290
  • Put your trust in the Lord and then do good.
  • 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:19.010
  • And if you want to know what that means, there's a commentary
  • 00:12:19.020 --> 00:12:21.280
  • on that in 1 Timothy chapter 6, verses 17 through 19.
  • 00:12:21.290 --> 00:12:26.100
  • Let me read this passage.
  • 00:12:26.110 --> 00:12:28.120
  • "Command those who are rich in this present age not to be
  • 00:12:28.130 --> 00:12:33.060
  • haughty, or to trust in uncertain riches but to trust in
  • 00:12:33.070 --> 00:12:38.070
  • the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.
  • 00:12:41.020 --> 00:12:46.080
  • And let them do good, that they be rich in good works,
  • 00:12:46.090 --> 00:12:51.260
  • ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves
  • 00:12:51.270 --> 00:12:55.130
  • a good foundation for the time to come."
  • 00:12:55.140 --> 00:12:57.230
  • It's almost as if the psalmist says when you're in a situation
  • 00:12:57.240 --> 00:13:00.250
  • where you don't know what to do, first put your trust in God and
  • 00:13:00.260 --> 00:13:03.250
  • then instead of sitting around and wondering how things are
  • 00:13:03.260 --> 00:13:06.050
  • gonna be for you, look around for somebody to help and do some
  • 00:13:06.060 --> 00:13:09.290
  • good things with what you have.
  • 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:12.120
  • What an incredible way to deal with life as we face it today.
  • 00:13:12.130 --> 00:13:17.020
  • Trust and do good.
  • 00:13:17.030 --> 00:13:20.090
  • All of us are into the trusting part, but what about
  • 00:13:20.100 --> 00:13:22.130
  • the do good part?
  • 00:13:22.140 --> 00:13:24.000
  • What about taking what God has given us?
  • 00:13:24.010 --> 00:13:26.070
  • How many of you know that no matter how bad things are for
  • 00:13:26.080 --> 00:13:28.270
  • you, somebody you know is doing worse than you are?
  • 00:13:28.280 --> 00:13:34.010
  • That's the second instruction.
  • 00:13:34.020 --> 00:13:35.220
  • Here's the third one, dwell on the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:13:35.230 --> 00:13:39.170
  • Notice the last phrase in verse 3, three principles in one
  • 00:13:39.180 --> 00:13:42.260
  • little verse, "And feed on his faithfulness."
  • 00:13:42.270 --> 00:13:48.190
  • The Bible says when you're trusting in the Lord, you
  • 00:13:48.200 --> 00:13:51.040
  • fill up your mind and your heart with the realization that he
  • 00:13:51.050 --> 00:13:54.130
  • is a faithful God, and he is worthy of your trust.
  • 00:13:54.140 --> 00:13:57.290
  • Feed on that, he is faithful.
  • 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.270
  • The early verses of Psalm 37 draw our attention to
  • 00:14:01.280 --> 00:14:05.040
  • the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:14:05.050 --> 00:14:07.060
  • But I'm gonna do what you should never do
  • 00:14:07.070 --> 00:14:08.170
  • when you're reading a novel.
  • 00:14:08.180 --> 00:14:09.270
  • I'm gonna take you clear to the end of the chapter and notice
  • 00:14:09.280 --> 00:14:12.200
  • what it says in verse 40 where the word "trust" appears again.
  • 00:14:12.210 --> 00:14:15.220
  • "And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;
  • 00:14:15.230 --> 00:14:19.090
  • He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them,
  • 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:22.190
  • Because they trust in Him."
  • 00:14:22.200 --> 00:14:25.180
  • When you trust in God and you do good, and then you fill
  • 00:14:25.190 --> 00:14:30.080
  • your life and your mind up with truth of his faithfulness,
  • 00:14:30.090 --> 00:14:33.020
  • which is like memorizing verses and putting truth into your
  • 00:14:33.030 --> 00:14:36.200
  • spiritual computer, you develop a kind of Teflon spiritual
  • 00:14:36.210 --> 00:14:42.000
  • personality that bad things just roll off of you.
  • 00:14:42.010 --> 00:14:48.150
  • You say, "Well, my 401 has become a 101, but God
  • 00:14:48.160 --> 00:14:55.110
  • is still on his throne and he's always been faithful to me,
  • 00:14:55.120 --> 00:14:59.190
  • and I know he's worthy of my trust."
  • 00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:01.120
  • How do you know that?
  • 00:15:01.130 --> 00:15:02.220
  • Well, let me just share with you what I've learned
  • 00:15:02.230 --> 00:15:04.020
  • from the Bible.
  • 00:15:04.030 --> 00:15:05.120
  • The Bible says that when I am faithless, he's still faithful.
  • 00:15:05.130 --> 00:15:09.230
  • His faithfulness is not troubled by what I do,
  • 00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:13.130
  • or what happens in the world.
  • 00:15:13.140 --> 00:15:15.060
  • He is worthy of our trust.
  • 00:15:15.070 --> 00:15:18.090
  • And how many of you know, you cannot really know that until
  • 00:15:18.100 --> 00:15:21.070
  • you go through some difficult things in your life?
  • 00:15:21.080 --> 00:15:23.220
  • Because when things are good, you probably think it's you.
  • 00:15:23.230 --> 00:15:27.060
  • When things are going well, you probably think how smart you
  • 00:15:27.070 --> 00:15:29.230
  • are, where you've put--but soon as some of that is threatened,
  • 00:15:29.240 --> 00:15:33.230
  • you become aware of your vulnerability.
  • 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:36.160
  • The Bible says to decide to trust in the Lord when you're
  • 00:15:36.170 --> 00:15:39.280
  • going through uncertain times, to do the things that honor the
  • 00:15:39.290 --> 00:15:43.200
  • Lord with your life, even though things are kind of upside down,
  • 00:15:43.210 --> 00:15:48.140
  • to dwell on the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:15:48.150 --> 00:15:50.100
  • And here's one of my favorite ones in the text,
  • 00:15:50.110 --> 00:15:52.260
  • "Delight yourself in the Lord."
  • 00:15:52.270 --> 00:15:56.200
  • Verse 4, "Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give
  • 00:15:56.210 --> 00:16:02.090
  • you the desires of your heart."
  • 00:16:02.100 --> 00:16:06.120
  • Even when our circumstances hold nothing that seems delightful
  • 00:16:06.130 --> 00:16:11.290
  • to us, we can always find our delight in the Lord.
  • 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:17.120
  • We could be facing loss and oppression,
  • 00:16:17.130 --> 00:16:20.260
  • but these things do not define us.
  • 00:16:20.270 --> 00:16:24.110
  • We should never let the challenges we face in our life
  • 00:16:24.120 --> 00:16:27.170
  • define who we are.
  • 00:16:27.180 --> 00:16:29.010
  • We are not the difficulties we face.
  • 00:16:29.020 --> 00:16:30.270
  • We are who we are because of our relationship with Almighty God.
  • 00:16:30.280 --> 00:16:34.230
  • Now, the interesting thing about this verse is that there's
  • 00:16:34.240 --> 00:16:37.140
  • a promise attached to it ad often it's misunderstood,
  • 00:16:37.150 --> 00:16:40.240
  • and I want to try to explain it the best I can today.
  • 00:16:40.250 --> 00:16:43.110
  • The Bible says, "Delight yourself also in the Lord,
  • 00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:46.160
  • And He will give you the desires of your heart."
  • 00:16:46.170 --> 00:16:51.090
  • Years ago, I was reading a book on the will of God
  • 00:16:51.100 --> 00:16:53.160
  • and the writer of the book
  • 00:16:53.170 --> 00:16:54.260
  • said the simplest way he knew to explain
  • 00:16:54.270 --> 00:16:56.280
  • how to get the will of God in your life was to fall in love
  • 00:16:56.290 --> 00:17:00.190
  • with God, and then do whatever you wanted to do.
  • 00:17:00.200 --> 00:17:03.170
  • I thought that was pretty simplistic, but maybe he's
  • 00:17:03.180 --> 00:17:05.200
  • not too far from the truth.
  • 00:17:05.210 --> 00:17:08.020
  • This passage of Scripture doesn't say that when you
  • 00:17:08.030 --> 00:17:10.140
  • delight in the Lord, you can ask him for anything you want,
  • 00:17:10.150 --> 00:17:13.190
  • he'll just give it to you, no matter how frivolous
  • 00:17:13.200 --> 00:17:15.200
  • it may seem.
  • 00:17:15.210 --> 00:17:17.000
  • "Lord, I'm delighting in you today.
  • 00:17:17.010 --> 00:17:18.100
  • I'd sure like to have a new Corvette."
  • 00:17:18.110 --> 00:17:21.080
  • No, that's not what it means.
  • 00:17:21.090 --> 00:17:23.040
  • Some teachers teach that, but that's not what it means.
  • 00:17:23.050 --> 00:17:26.200
  • Here, listen to this, the Bible says if you delight in the Lord,
  • 00:17:26.210 --> 00:17:32.210
  • if you delight in him, if you truly have all of your delight
  • 00:17:32.220 --> 00:17:36.020
  • in him, you will never ask anything from him
  • 00:17:36.030 --> 00:17:38.190
  • that does not coincide with who he is.
  • 00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:42.200
  • In your delighting in the Lord, you define the things that you
  • 00:17:42.210 --> 00:17:46.020
  • need and that you want.
  • 00:17:46.030 --> 00:17:47.230
  • It becomes the context in which you ask so that if you're truly
  • 00:17:47.240 --> 00:17:51.260
  • delighting in the Lord, you can ask him for what you want
  • 00:17:51.270 --> 00:17:55.050
  • and he will give you the desires of your heart.
  • 00:17:55.060 --> 00:17:59.100
  • And so, the Bible tells us that there's some things we can do
  • 00:17:59.110 --> 00:18:02.180
  • during times that are uncertain.
  • 00:18:02.190 --> 00:18:04.250
  • We can trust in the Lord.
  • 00:18:04.260 --> 00:18:06.080
  • We can do the things that honor the Lord.
  • 00:18:06.090 --> 00:18:08.260
  • We can dwell on the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:18:08.270 --> 00:18:10.200
  • We can delight ourselves in the Lord.
  • 00:18:10.210 --> 00:18:12.020
  • And then it says, "Dedicate your life to the Lord."
  • 00:18:12.030 --> 00:18:14.260
  • It says here in verse 5, "Commit your way to the Lord,
  • 00:18:14.270 --> 00:18:19.130
  • trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass."
  • 00:18:19.140 --> 00:18:22.040
  • That means you come to the place where you say,
  • 00:18:22.050 --> 00:18:24.040
  • "Lord, here is my life.
  • 00:18:24.050 --> 00:18:26.160
  • I have no idea what's ahead.
  • 00:18:26.170 --> 00:18:28.240
  • I don't know what you have in store for me where
  • 00:18:28.250 --> 00:18:30.280
  • this is all going, but I'm dedicating this to you.
  • 00:18:30.290 --> 00:18:33.280
  • I'm signing the paper at the bottom of the page,
  • 00:18:33.290 --> 00:18:36.190
  • and you just fill in whatever you want.
  • 00:18:36.200 --> 00:18:38.250
  • And that's who I am. That's where I'm going.
  • 00:18:38.260 --> 00:18:41.100
  • My life is yours.
  • 00:18:41.110 --> 00:18:42.200
  • Lord God, we're in this together.
  • 00:18:42.210 --> 00:18:45.030
  • I dedicate my life to you."
  • 00:18:45.040 --> 00:18:47.130
  • As we look back over our lives, sometimes we have to admit that
  • 00:18:47.140 --> 00:18:51.080
  • the things we thought were negative were just ways that God
  • 00:18:51.090 --> 00:18:55.090
  • was getting ready to do something really positive,
  • 00:18:55.100 --> 00:18:59.200
  • and we see him at work.
  • 00:18:59.210 --> 00:19:01.270
  • So, we decided to trust in the Lord.
  • 00:19:01.280 --> 00:19:04.200
  • We do things that honor the Lord.
  • 00:19:04.210 --> 00:19:06.090
  • We dwell in the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:19:06.100 --> 00:19:08.010
  • We're not even out of the third verse yet.
  • 00:19:08.020 --> 00:19:10.050
  • We delight ourselves in the Lord, verse 4.
  • 00:19:10.060 --> 00:19:12.070
  • We dedicate our life to the Lord, verse five.
  • 00:19:12.080 --> 00:19:15.060
  • And here's what I love,
  • 00:19:15.070 --> 00:19:16.270
  • "Download your worry to the Lord."
  • 00:19:16.280 --> 00:19:19.050
  • Just do it, download it.
  • 00:19:19.060 --> 00:19:21.170
  • Verse 7, "Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
  • 00:19:21.180 --> 00:19:26.220
  • Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass."
  • 00:19:26.230 --> 00:19:31.200
  • The Bible says, "Don't get yourself caught up in worrying
  • 00:19:31.210 --> 00:19:36.030
  • about what's going on with other people."
  • 00:19:36.040 --> 00:19:39.050
  • I mentioned earlier that one of the things we do sometimes as
  • 00:19:39.060 --> 00:19:41.210
  • Christians is we kind of look around and say, "Lord God,
  • 00:19:41.220 --> 00:19:44.130
  • I'm serving you.
  • 00:19:44.140 --> 00:19:46.070
  • I'm honoring you with my life.
  • 00:19:46.080 --> 00:19:48.100
  • I'm doing everything I know to do to be an obedient Christian,
  • 00:19:48.110 --> 00:19:51.270
  • why am I having a hard time and all these people that don't even
  • 00:19:51.280 --> 00:19:55.040
  • know how to say your name without cursing,
  • 00:19:55.050 --> 00:19:57.170
  • they seem to be doing well?"
  • 00:19:57.180 --> 00:20:00.080
  • And the Bible says, "Fret not, fret not."
  • 00:20:00.090 --> 00:20:02.270
  • The word fret's a very interesting word.
  • 00:20:02.280 --> 00:20:08.190
  • It has two different meanings.
  • 00:20:08.200 --> 00:20:10.010
  • One meaning is the word "fret" means to gnaw at, like a rat
  • 00:20:10.020 --> 00:20:14.200
  • gnawing at a rope or something.
  • 00:20:14.210 --> 00:20:16.270
  • And the other meaning is to have a kind of like
  • 00:20:16.280 --> 00:20:19.110
  • an explosive burst of flame.
  • 00:20:19.120 --> 00:20:23.290
  • And that's what worry is like, it's like something gnawing
  • 00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:26.050
  • at you on the inside.
  • 00:20:26.060 --> 00:20:27.150
  • It's like something burning on the inside.
  • 00:20:27.160 --> 00:20:29.130
  • So, the Lord Jesus says, when you look out at how life seems
  • 00:20:29.140 --> 00:20:31.230
  • to be laying out in front of you, don't fret, kill the rat,
  • 00:20:31.240 --> 00:20:35.060
  • put out the fire. Get on with your life, amen?
  • 00:20:35.070 --> 00:20:39.140
  • Because if you worry about it, it's not gonna change one thing,
  • 00:20:39.150 --> 00:20:43.050
  • not gonna change one thing except you.
  • 00:20:43.060 --> 00:20:46.080
  • It's gonna ruin you.
  • 00:20:46.090 --> 00:20:48.070
  • Here's the last one of the seven and we're finished.
  • 00:20:48.080 --> 00:20:51.200
  • Let me give them to you again.
  • 00:20:51.210 --> 00:20:53.000
  • Decide to trust in the Lord.
  • 00:20:53.010 --> 00:20:54.100
  • Do the things that are unto the Lord.
  • 00:20:54.110 --> 00:20:55.200
  • Dwell on the faithfulness of the Lord.
  • 00:20:55.210 --> 00:20:57.010
  • Delight yourself in the Lord.
  • 00:20:57.020 --> 00:20:58.120
  • Dedicate your life to the Lord.
  • 00:20:58.130 --> 00:21:00.110
  • Download your worry to the Lord.
  • 00:21:00.120 --> 00:21:01.280
  • And finally, discipline yourself to wait on the Lord.
  • 00:21:01.290 --> 00:21:06.010
  • And I wish that weren't in the Bible.
  • 00:21:06.020 --> 00:21:09.140
  • I don't like waiting.
  • 00:21:09.150 --> 00:21:11.000
  • I'm built more for speed than for comfort, and waiting is not
  • 00:21:11.010 --> 00:21:13.220
  • my favorite thing.
  • 00:21:13.230 --> 00:21:15.230
  • Wait on the Lord, what does that mean?
  • 00:21:16.210 --> 00:21:20.070
  • It means God is at work, but he works on his timetable,
  • 00:21:20.080 --> 00:21:24.240
  • and feels no obligation to coincide his timetable
  • 00:21:24.250 --> 00:21:28.030
  • with yours or mine.
  • 00:21:28.040 --> 00:21:31.020
  • We may say, "God, would you please resolve this?"
  • 00:21:31.030 --> 00:21:33.060
  • And he says, "Yes."
  • 00:21:33.070 --> 00:21:35.080
  • "Would you please resolve this now?"
  • 00:21:35.090 --> 00:21:38.280
  • And he says, "Wait," and we don't like to wait.
  • 00:21:38.290 --> 00:21:43.200
  • In the waiting, we learn.
  • 00:21:43.210 --> 00:21:45.130
  • In the waiting, we grow.
  • 00:21:45.140 --> 00:21:47.130
  • Waiting is what happens between the promise and the fulfillment.
  • 00:21:47.140 --> 00:21:51.000
  • Waiting builds our faith.
  • 00:21:51.010 --> 00:21:53.020
  • Waiting reminds us that God does not live on our schedule,
  • 00:21:53.030 --> 00:21:56.210
  • we live on his.
  • 00:21:56.220 --> 00:21:59.180
  • And if we will learn to wait, we will see God do
  • 00:21:59.190 --> 00:22:03.160
  • some great things.
  • 00:22:03.170 --> 00:22:05.070
  • One of the joys of being a bit older is to look back over your
  • 00:22:05.080 --> 00:22:09.080
  • shoulder and see how God resolved things that I wondered
  • 00:22:09.090 --> 00:22:15.050
  • how they would ever get resolved.
  • 00:22:15.060 --> 00:22:17.200
  • God was at work the entire time, I just didn't see it,
  • 00:22:17.210 --> 00:22:23.090
  • and I was left to wait.
  • 00:22:23.100 --> 00:22:27.050
  • So, if you are facing uncertainty, or if you know
  • 00:22:27.060 --> 00:22:30.170
  • people that are, I commend to you the 37th Psalm.
  • 00:22:30.180 --> 00:22:34.180
  • And you don't have to go past the seventh first if you don't
  • 00:22:34.190 --> 00:22:37.000
  • want to because in this Psalm are these crisp instructions.
  • 00:22:37.010 --> 00:22:42.010
  • I've underlined all of the instructions in my Bible.
  • 00:22:42.020 --> 00:22:46.040
  • The Word of God tells us to trust in the Lord, to do good,
  • 00:22:46.050 --> 00:22:49.120
  • to feed on his faithfulness, to delight in the Lord, to commit
  • 00:22:49.130 --> 00:22:52.080
  • our way to the Lord, to wait on the Lord and when we do that,
  • 00:22:52.090 --> 00:22:58.270
  • we discover the Lord's in charge, and we can trust him.
  • 00:22:58.280 --> 00:23:04.170
  • And we will be strong in the midst of it all.
  • 00:23:04.180 --> 00:23:07.270
  • And that's a resource you only have if you know God
  • 00:23:07.280 --> 00:23:11.000
  • through Jesus Christ.
  • 00:23:11.010 --> 00:23:13.000
  • In fact, let me just suggest to you as we close this message
  • 00:23:13.010 --> 00:23:15.240
  • today, that if you haven't ever put your trust in God, here's
  • 00:23:15.250 --> 00:23:20.120
  • what you should do, you should decide to do it today,
  • 00:23:20.130 --> 00:23:23.250
  • just decide to do it.
  • 00:23:23.260 --> 00:23:25.180
  • You don't have to make anything mystical out of it.
  • 00:23:25.190 --> 00:23:28.050
  • What I've told you about God is true.
  • 00:23:28.060 --> 00:23:29.290
  • Do you want him in your life?
  • 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.150
  • Here's how it happens, you accept what the Word of God
  • 00:23:32.160 --> 00:23:35.290
  • says about you as a person.
  • 00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:38.040
  • I had to accept it about me.
  • 00:23:38.050 --> 00:23:39.140
  • It's true of all of us. You know what it is?
  • 00:23:39.150 --> 00:23:41.050
  • We're all sinners. Guess what.
  • 00:23:41.060 --> 00:23:43.120
  • We're all sinners and the Bible says that when we acknowledge
  • 00:23:43.130 --> 00:23:47.030
  • that we're sinners, we come to God and we say, "Almighty God,
  • 00:23:47.040 --> 00:23:51.160
  • will you forgive me of my sin?"
  • 00:23:51.170 --> 00:23:53.010
  • And God says, "Yes, I will do that through what my Son Jesus
  • 00:23:53.020 --> 00:23:55.250
  • did for you on the cross.
  • 00:23:55.260 --> 00:23:57.090
  • He died on the cross and paid the penalty for your sin.
  • 00:23:57.100 --> 00:24:00.120
  • If you will trust him, and put your faith in him and what he
  • 00:24:00.130 --> 00:24:03.040
  • did for you on the cross, you can become a member of
  • 00:24:03.050 --> 00:24:05.220
  • my forever family."
  • 00:24:05.230 --> 00:24:07.230
  • And you say, "Well, I've never done that."
  • 00:24:07.240 --> 00:24:09.080
  • Well, why don't you do it?
  • 00:24:09.090 --> 00:24:11.030
  • Why don't you decide to do it?
  • 00:24:11.040 --> 00:24:12.160
  • Why don't you decide today, "I've had enough of this life
  • 00:24:12.170 --> 00:24:15.160
  • depending on myself and everybody else.
  • 00:24:15.170 --> 00:24:17.270
  • I want to get in on the God thing.
  • 00:24:17.280 --> 00:24:20.080
  • I have decided to put my trust in him."
  • 00:24:20.090 --> 00:24:22.200
  • We used to sing a song when I was growing up that
  • 00:24:22.210 --> 00:24:24.180
  • goes like this, "I have decided to follow Jesus."
  • 00:24:24.190 --> 00:24:28.210
  • I want you to decide that today, Make that decision, and just
  • 00:24:28.220 --> 00:24:33.190
  • tell God, "I have decided to put my trust in you and in
  • 00:24:33.200 --> 00:24:38.020
  • Jesus Christ," and he will hear you,
  • 00:24:38.030 --> 00:24:41.060
  • and acknowledge you, and you will become a Christian.
  • 00:24:41.070 --> 00:24:46.070
  • "And then all these things that I've promised from Psalm 37
  • 00:24:46.080 --> 00:24:50.100
  • will come into play in your life."
  • 00:24:50.110 --> 00:24:52.260
  • Why would you not want to do that?
  • 00:24:52.270 --> 00:24:55.010
  • You're just one decision away from being involved
  • 00:24:55.020 --> 00:24:59.130
  • in the blessing of God?
  • 00:24:59.140 --> 00:25:01.160
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's program
  • 00:25:02.190 --> 00:25:05.150
  • right after this.
  • 00:25:05.160 --> 00:25:07.110
  • announcer: Living in today's world can be perilous.
  • 00:25:08.240 --> 00:25:11.070
  • Worry, anxiety, and fear seem to be a part of daily life.
  • 00:25:11.080 --> 00:25:14.200
  • From who or what are we really safe?
  • 00:25:14.210 --> 00:25:17.180
  • Ever feel that way?
  • 00:25:17.190 --> 00:25:19.100
  • Satan wants to hold you captive to your fears.
  • 00:25:19.110 --> 00:25:22.160
  • However, God has not given us the spirit of fear,
  • 00:25:22.170 --> 00:25:25.110
  • but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

  • here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:25:55.260 --> 00:25:58.010
  • Dr. Jeremiah: If your security, your hope is tied to
  • 00:25:58.170 --> 00:26:01.220
  • your financial well-being well, we've seen exactly
  • 00:26:01.230 --> 00:26:06.010
  • how fleeting that can be.
  • 00:26:06.020 --> 00:26:07.120
  • I mean, it can lead to brokenness and ruin
  • 00:26:07.130 --> 00:26:09.170
  • on every level.
  • 00:26:09.180 --> 00:26:11.000
  • Wealth alone isn't the foundation of a satisfying life
  • 00:26:11.010 --> 00:26:14.230
  • and never has been.
  • 00:26:14.240 --> 00:26:17.020
  • True riches come from knowing the God from whom
  • 00:26:17.030 --> 00:26:20.040
  • all blessings flow.
  • 00:26:20.050 --> 00:26:22.080
  • And it's my hope and prayer that you have a personal growing
  • 00:26:22.090 --> 00:26:25.200
  • relationship with that God, the only source
  • 00:26:25.210 --> 00:26:30.100
  • of real eternal security and hope.
  • 00:26:30.110 --> 00:26:32.170
  • Whether you're a new believer or you want to take your
  • 00:26:32.180 --> 00:26:35.030
  • relationship with God to a deeper level, there are
  • 00:26:35.040 --> 00:26:38.280
  • two helpful resources that I'd like to send you at no cost.

  • And the second is our monthly devotional magazine,
  • 00:26:46.170 --> 00:26:50.000
  • "Turning Points."

  • 00:26:51.170 --> 00:26:54.230
  • "Turning Point."
  • 00:26:54.240 --> 00:26:56.040
  • announcer: Next time on "Turning Point."
  • 00:26:58.110 --> 00:27:00.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: God never asks us to do something
  • 00:27:00.230 --> 00:27:03.100
  • and then abandons us to fail.
