  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Revelation, it is known
  • 00:00:02.250 --> 00:00:06.160
  • as a book of mysterious signs and wonders.
  • 00:00:06.170 --> 00:00:11.110
  • But the prophecy contained within speaks of more
  • 00:00:11.120 --> 00:00:14.010
  • than just what is to come in the end of days.
  • 00:00:14.020 --> 00:00:19.220
  • Found near the beginning of the book, Revelation contains
  • 00:00:19.230 --> 00:00:22.250
  • a collection of seven letters, dispatches from Jesus, delivered
  • 00:00:22.260 --> 00:00:27.260
  • by Revelation's human author, John.
  • 00:00:27.270 --> 00:00:31.240
  • These letters aren't long.
  • 00:00:31.250 --> 00:00:33.090
  • In fact, they're actually quite brief
  • 00:00:33.100 --> 00:00:35.120
  • and straight to the point.
  • 00:00:35.130 --> 00:00:37.090
  • The recipients?
  • 00:00:37.100 --> 00:00:39.020
  • The early Christian churches.
  • 00:00:39.030 --> 00:00:41.200
  • But while these letters spoke directly to seven churches
  • 00:00:41.210 --> 00:00:44.050
  • of antiquity, they, like the book of Revelation,
  • 00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:47.180
  • are prophetic, prophetic in that by them, Christ's words
  • 00:00:47.190 --> 00:00:51.220
  • speak to all churches through all the ages.
  • 00:00:51.230 --> 00:00:55.260
  • Seven churches, seven letters, seven messages
  • 00:00:55.270 --> 00:01:00.280
  • for today's believers, relevant words of commendation,
  • 00:01:00.290 --> 00:01:05.010
  • tender encouragement, and of warning.
  • 00:01:05.020 --> 00:01:08.080
  • So join me as we look into the Bible and discover
  • 00:01:08.090 --> 00:01:11.100
  • Christ's timeless words
  • 00:01:11.110 --> 00:01:13.100
  • to his followers through the seven churches
  • 00:01:13.110 --> 00:01:16.120
  • of Revelation.
  • 00:01:16.130 --> 00:01:18.130
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Hello, I am David Jeremiah, and welcome
  • 00:01:21.270 --> 00:01:24.210
  • to "Turning Point."
  • 00:01:24.220 --> 00:01:26.070
  • We are tempted to look back in history and be amazed
  • 00:01:26.080 --> 00:01:29.240
  • at the wickedness and evil present in ancient cultures,
  • 00:01:29.250 --> 00:01:34.160
  • and we wonder how Christians managed to preserve their faith
  • 00:01:34.170 --> 00:01:37.250
  • in such times.
  • 00:01:37.260 --> 00:01:39.150
  • But what about our world today?
  • 00:01:39.160 --> 00:01:42.260
  • How will future generations assess our society?
  • 00:01:42.270 --> 00:01:46.280
  • And will the church have demonstrated faithfulness
  • 00:01:46.290 --> 00:01:50.000
  • in the midst of rampant secularism?
  • 00:01:50.010 --> 00:01:53.230
  • The ancient city of Pergamos was overrun with pagan,
  • 00:01:53.240 --> 00:01:58.040
  • even demonic influences, and the church in that city
  • 00:01:58.050 --> 00:02:01.220
  • was fighting against corruption and compromise.
  • 00:02:01.230 --> 00:02:05.150
  • Today's message on "Turning Point" is
  • 00:02:05.160 --> 00:02:07.120
  • about the church in Pergamos, and it's entitled
  • 00:02:07.130 --> 00:02:09.240
  • "The Church of Satan's City," the fourth message
  • 00:02:09.250 --> 00:02:13.130
  • in our series on "The Seven Churches
  • 00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:16.050
  • of Revelation."
  • 00:02:16.060 --> 00:02:17.280
  • So please join me as we apply powerful lessons from the past
  • 00:02:17.290 --> 00:02:23.010
  • to the problems of the present on this edition
  • 00:02:23.020 --> 00:02:26.250
  • of "Turning Point."
  • 00:02:26.260 --> 00:02:28.260
  • male announcer: Revelation is a mysterious book full of signs
  • 00:02:29.000 --> 00:02:31.160
  • and symbols, portraying things seen and unseen
  • 00:02:31.170 --> 00:02:34.240
  • in the world and those of the world to come,
  • 00:02:34.250 --> 00:02:37.200
  • especially appearing in numbers of seven.
  • 00:02:37.210 --> 00:02:40.200

  • Contact "Turning Point" today.
  • 00:03:44.040 --> 00:03:46.040
  • 00:03:48.020 --> 00:03:57.170
  • Dr. Jeremiah: The Bible tells us that the destination
  • 00:03:58.120 --> 00:04:00.060
  • of this letter was to a place called Pergamos.
  • 00:04:00.070 --> 00:04:03.160
  • Pergamos describes a sort of union
  • 00:04:03.170 --> 00:04:05.230
  • of pagan cathedral city, a university town,
  • 00:04:05.240 --> 00:04:09.060
  • and a royal residence.
  • 00:04:09.070 --> 00:04:10.230
  • And if you were to follow it on the map, you would discover
  • 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:13.150
  • it is the most northern of the seven cities
  • 00:04:13.160 --> 00:04:16.060
  • that were located some 60 miles from each other.
  • 00:04:16.070 --> 00:04:20.180
  • And when the book of Revelation was written,
  • 00:04:20.190 --> 00:04:22.190
  • Pergamos was the capital of the Roman government
  • 00:04:22.200 --> 00:04:25.090
  • in Asia.
  • 00:04:25.100 --> 00:04:27.170
  • Pergamos was different from all of the other cities
  • 00:04:27.180 --> 00:04:29.200
  • in Asia.
  • 00:04:29.210 --> 00:04:30.200
  • It could not boast of its strategic location,
  • 00:04:30.210 --> 00:04:33.070
  • like Ephesus and Smyrna.
  • 00:04:33.080 --> 00:04:36.080
  • But it was considered the greatest city of Asia,
  • 00:04:36.090 --> 00:04:40.080
  • and it had been the capital city for almost 400 years.
  • 00:04:40.090 --> 00:04:45.000
  • It was built on the top of a dominant hill.
  • 00:04:45.010 --> 00:04:47.230
  • On a clear day, the Mediterranean Sea,
  • 00:04:47.240 --> 00:04:50.070
  • 15 miles away, could be seen from this city.
  • 00:04:50.080 --> 00:04:54.280
  • The Bible tells us in verse 12 that the Lord had something
  • 00:04:54.290 --> 00:04:58.110
  • to say to this city.
  • 00:04:58.120 --> 00:04:59.270
  • The Bible says that the Lord is
  • 00:04:59.280 --> 00:05:02.110
  • described as, "The one who had the sharp two-edged sword."
  • 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:07.010
  • We've run into this phrase a couple of times
  • 00:05:07.020 --> 00:05:08.280
  • in the book of Revelation.
  • 00:05:08.290 --> 00:05:10.120
  • It's the shortest and simplest description
  • 00:05:10.130 --> 00:05:12.190
  • of Christ in all of the letters.
  • 00:05:12.200 --> 00:05:16.110
  • The message to Pergamum comes from he who has
  • 00:05:16.120 --> 00:05:19.130
  • a sharp, two-edged sword.
  • 00:05:19.140 --> 00:05:22.230
  • Here in this letter, the Lord is said to have a sword.
  • 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:26.260
  • And this sword is going to be used to smite the nations
  • 00:05:26.270 --> 00:05:30.150
  • according to Revelation 19.
  • 00:05:30.160 --> 00:05:32.220
  • In Roman times, the sword was a symbol of might.
  • 00:05:32.230 --> 00:05:36.160
  • And interestingly enough, the Roman proconsul in charge,
  • 00:05:36.170 --> 00:05:39.210
  • residing in Pergamos during this time,
  • 00:05:39.220 --> 00:05:42.110
  • had as his symbol the power of the sword.
  • 00:05:42.120 --> 00:05:46.270
  • The mention of the sword to the Christians in Pergamos
  • 00:05:46.280 --> 00:05:49.200
  • would have reminded them that Jesus is Lord
  • 00:05:49.210 --> 00:05:52.240
  • and not the Roman officials.
  • 00:05:52.250 --> 00:05:54.130
  • Jesus has the sword they should be worried about
  • 00:05:54.140 --> 00:05:57.190
  • and not the Roman officials who were banding
  • 00:05:57.200 --> 00:06:00.100
  • about the city.
  • 00:06:00.110 --> 00:06:01.290
  • In verses 13 to 15, the Lord gives a little diagnosis
  • 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:04.240
  • of this church, the same pattern
  • 00:06:04.250 --> 00:06:06.240
  • he follows with every church, and this is what he says.
  • 00:06:06.250 --> 00:06:09.140
  • He begins every one of these letters
  • 00:06:09.150 --> 00:06:11.180
  • with these words, "I know your works."
  • 00:06:11.190 --> 00:06:15.100
  • Let me just pause for a moment and say Jesus said that
  • 00:06:15.110 --> 00:06:17.250
  • of all seven of churches, and he says it of us,
  • 00:06:17.260 --> 00:06:19.260
  • doesn't he?
  • 00:06:19.270 --> 00:06:20.270
  • "I know your works."
  • 00:06:20.280 --> 00:06:22.270
  • The Lord God knows what's going on in our life.
  • 00:06:22.280 --> 00:06:24.250
  • I know we pray and tell him, but we don't tell him
  • 00:06:24.260 --> 00:06:26.230
  • because he doesn't know.
  • 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:28.080
  • We tell him because it's important for us to know
  • 00:06:28.090 --> 00:06:30.200
  • that he knows and that we know.
  • 00:06:30.210 --> 00:06:33.150
  • The Lord Jesus says to the churches,
  • 00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:34.290
  • "I know your works, and where you dwell.
  • 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:38.070
  • I know what's going on in your life."
  • 00:06:38.080 --> 00:06:40.070
  • How encouraging that is to us to know that Almighty God
  • 00:06:40.080 --> 00:06:43.060
  • knows what's happening in our life.
  • 00:06:43.070 --> 00:06:44.280
  • And even in these dire circumstances, he says,
  • 00:06:44.290 --> 00:06:47.130
  • "I know where Satan's throne is.
  • 00:06:47.140 --> 00:06:50.080
  • And you hold fast to my name, and you do not deny my name
  • 00:06:50.090 --> 00:06:53.240
  • even in the days in which Antipas was
  • 00:06:53.250 --> 00:06:56.110
  • my faithful martyr, who was killed among you,
  • 00:06:56.120 --> 00:07:00.230
  • in this city where Satan dwells."
  • 00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:03.290
  • Here is his fourfold diagnosis
  • 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:06.170
  • of this city.
  • 00:07:06.180 --> 00:07:08.250
  • He says, "Where you dwell, where Satan's throne is,
  • 00:07:08.260 --> 00:07:11.250
  • where Satan dwells."
  • 00:07:11.260 --> 00:07:13.000
  • Jesus knew the circumstances of their faith.
  • 00:07:13.010 --> 00:07:17.210
  • The Christians in Pergamos had their permanent address
  • 00:07:17.220 --> 00:07:21.030
  • in the city of Satan.
  • 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:24.250
  • From Pergamos, heathenism, idolatry, and paganism radiated
  • 00:07:24.260 --> 00:07:28.110
  • all over Asia Minor.
  • 00:07:28.120 --> 00:07:30.110
  • From a Christian standpoint, it was one of the worst
  • 00:07:30.120 --> 00:07:32.250
  • of the seven cities.
  • 00:07:32.260 --> 00:07:34.200
  • Notice in your Bible two times it says "Satan's throne"
  • 00:07:34.210 --> 00:07:38.230
  • and "where Satan dwells."
  • 00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:40.110
  • This illustrates the darkness
  • 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:42.150
  • and blackness of this place.
  • 00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:45.210
  • One of the ancient wonders of the world is
  • 00:07:45.220 --> 00:07:49.210
  • the magnificent altar of Zeus.
  • 00:07:49.220 --> 00:07:53.000
  • On a ledge jutting out from the Acropolis
  • 00:07:53.010 --> 00:07:55.280
  • was built the most ornate, the largest,
  • 00:07:55.290 --> 00:07:59.060
  • the most famous altar in all of the world.
  • 00:07:59.070 --> 00:08:02.280
  • It was over 100 feet square, 40 feet high,
  • 00:08:02.290 --> 00:08:05.280
  • and around the base of it, one of the most impressive
  • 00:08:05.290 --> 00:08:08.200
  • pieces of sculpture created by ancient art.
  • 00:08:08.210 --> 00:08:12.260
  • The German government in the last century sent
  • 00:08:12.270 --> 00:08:14.260
  • an expedition to excavate Pergamos, and they found
  • 00:08:14.270 --> 00:08:17.270
  • a large part of that altar in their excavation.
  • 00:08:17.280 --> 00:08:21.090
  • This altar, high on the side of the mountain,
  • 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:24.040
  • looked something like a throne.
  • 00:08:24.050 --> 00:08:26.140
  • And some have thought this is what the Lord Jesus meant
  • 00:08:26.150 --> 00:08:29.150
  • when he talked about the throne of Satan
  • 00:08:29.160 --> 00:08:32.230
  • in the city of Pergamos.
  • 00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:35.040
  • The Lord knew the circumstances of their faith.
  • 00:08:35.050 --> 00:08:37.060
  • They lived in a very difficult place.
  • 00:08:37.070 --> 00:08:39.290
  • And he knew the conviction of their faith.
  • 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:41.260
  • He said, "You hold fast to my name."
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:44.200
  • And even though they were persecuted and threatened,
  • 00:08:44.210 --> 00:08:46.250
  • they held fast to the faith.
  • 00:08:46.260 --> 00:08:48.060
  • It proves to you that no matter where you live,
  • 00:08:48.070 --> 00:08:50.130
  • you can be faithful to God.
  • 00:08:50.140 --> 00:08:51.250
  • Tell you what, if you're going to be a Christian in Pergamos,
  • 00:08:51.260 --> 00:08:53.250
  • you better really mean what you say and say
  • 00:08:53.260 --> 00:08:55.240
  • what you mean because you were going to pay a price for being
  • 00:08:55.250 --> 00:08:58.190
  • a Christian.
  • 00:08:58.200 --> 00:09:00.060
  • Not only that, but he knew the courage of their faith.
  • 00:09:00.070 --> 00:09:02.150
  • Verse 13 says, "And you did not deny my faith even in the days
  • 00:09:02.160 --> 00:09:06.190
  • in which Antipas was my faithful martyr,
  • 00:09:06.200 --> 00:09:10.160
  • who was killed among you."
  • 00:09:10.170 --> 00:09:12.170
  • Now, Antipas is the name of a man, a noble witness
  • 00:09:12.180 --> 00:09:16.190
  • for Christ who sealed his testimony for Jesus Christ
  • 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:20.030
  • with his blood.
  • 00:09:20.040 --> 00:09:21.170
  • Actually, the word "martyr" means witness.
  • 00:09:21.180 --> 00:09:24.180
  • He was a witness for the Lord, he was a martyr for the Lord.
  • 00:09:24.190 --> 00:09:28.130
  • The early Christians, to be a witness meant
  • 00:09:28.140 --> 00:09:30.160
  • eventually being a martyr.
  • 00:09:30.170 --> 00:09:33.250
  • And Antipas is a word which means against all.
  • 00:09:33.260 --> 00:09:37.090
  • This man was a faithful witness unto death, against all.
  • 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:41.090
  • In calling him his faithful witness,
  • 00:09:41.100 --> 00:09:42.270
  • Christ gives to him his own title.
  • 00:09:42.280 --> 00:09:47.060
  • He is a faithful witness.
  • 00:09:47.070 --> 00:09:49.240
  • That is used of Jesus Christ on two occasions
  • 00:09:49.250 --> 00:09:52.120
  • in the book of Revelation.
  • 00:09:52.130 --> 00:09:54.220
  • Jesus knew the circumstances of their faith, that they lived
  • 00:09:54.230 --> 00:09:57.150
  • in a tough city.
  • 00:09:57.160 --> 00:09:59.020
  • He knew the conviction of their faith, that even though
  • 00:09:59.030 --> 00:10:01.000
  • they were surrounded by all kinds of evil,
  • 00:10:01.010 --> 00:10:03.000
  • they stood true to what they believed.
  • 00:10:03.010 --> 00:10:05.050
  • He knew the courage of their faith.
  • 00:10:05.060 --> 00:10:06.200
  • At least one of them had given his life for what he believed.
  • 00:10:06.210 --> 00:10:10.030
  • He knew the compromise of their faith, and this is
  • 00:10:10.040 --> 00:10:12.230
  • where they get into trouble.
  • 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:17.040
  • You know, you're reading along, and you're reading
  • 00:10:17.050 --> 00:10:18.210
  • all these good things, and you hope that the word "but"
  • 00:10:18.220 --> 00:10:21.020
  • doesn't come into the conversation,
  • 00:10:21.030 --> 00:10:23.170
  • the word "nevertheless," or the word "but."
  • 00:10:23.180 --> 00:10:25.200
  • Now, as we learned, the church in Smyrna, there isn't
  • 00:10:25.210 --> 00:10:28.050
  • anything bad said about Smyrna.
  • 00:10:28.060 --> 00:10:30.180
  • There's one other church like that,
  • 00:10:30.190 --> 00:10:31.280
  • the church of Philadelphia.
  • 00:10:31.290 --> 00:10:33.210
  • But in all the other letters, the writer of the letter gives
  • 00:10:33.220 --> 00:10:36.120
  • you all the things that are good about the church, and then slips
  • 00:10:36.130 --> 00:10:39.260
  • in these few things that aren't so good.
  • 00:10:39.270 --> 00:10:42.150
  • You remember Ephesus was a good church,
  • 00:10:42.160 --> 00:10:44.160
  • had a lot going for it, dominant, very dynamic,
  • 00:10:44.170 --> 00:10:47.040
  • but they had left their first love.
  • 00:10:47.050 --> 00:10:50.220
  • Notice what the Lord says about this church.
  • 00:10:50.230 --> 00:10:54.130
  • "But I have a few things against you, because you have
  • 00:10:54.140 --> 00:10:56.150
  • there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam,
  • 00:10:56.160 --> 00:11:00.080
  • who taught Balak to put a stumbling block
  • 00:11:00.090 --> 00:11:02.050
  • before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed
  • 00:11:02.060 --> 00:11:04.270
  • to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.
  • 00:11:04.280 --> 00:11:07.220
  • Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine
  • 00:11:07.230 --> 00:11:10.030
  • of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate."
  • 00:11:10.040 --> 00:11:13.180
  • Now, let's break that down, let's talk about that
  • 00:11:13.190 --> 00:11:15.180
  • for just a moment.
  • 00:11:15.190 --> 00:11:16.210
  • Satan was not able to destroy
  • 00:11:16.220 --> 00:11:20.090
  • the Christians in Pergamos by coming in as a roaring lion.
  • 00:11:20.100 --> 00:11:25.090
  • But he was making inroads as a deceiving serpent.
  • 00:11:25.100 --> 00:11:30.170
  • A group of compromising people had infiltrated
  • 00:11:30.180 --> 00:11:33.130
  • the church fellowship in Pergamos, and Jesus hated
  • 00:11:33.140 --> 00:11:37.100
  • their doctrines and their practices.
  • 00:11:37.110 --> 00:11:40.160
  • He refers to this doctrine as the doctrine of Balaam.
  • 00:11:40.170 --> 00:11:46.110
  • Now, I know some of you know this story, but this is
  • 00:11:46.120 --> 00:11:48.250
  • a great story from the Old Testament,
  • 00:11:48.260 --> 00:11:50.170
  • so let me just tell you the story like we were
  • 00:11:50.180 --> 00:11:52.050
  • just sitting around a fire, and I wanted to tell you
  • 00:11:52.060 --> 00:11:54.220
  • this great Old Testament story.
  • 00:11:54.230 --> 00:11:56.280
  • The Bible says there was a man by the name of Balaam,
  • 00:11:56.290 --> 00:12:00.100
  • who Satan used against the people of God.
  • 00:12:00.110 --> 00:12:04.030
  • Balaam was a prophet, who professed to be able
  • 00:12:04.040 --> 00:12:08.080
  • to influence the gods for or against people
  • 00:12:08.090 --> 00:12:11.250
  • by his incantations and his offerings.
  • 00:12:11.260 --> 00:12:16.040
  • He ran a wholesale business in divine favors,
  • 00:12:16.050 --> 00:12:20.050
  • and he would negotiate with any god
  • 00:12:20.060 --> 00:12:22.050
  • for whatever price.
  • 00:12:22.060 --> 00:12:24.070
  • Balak, who was the king of Moab, promised Balaam a fat fee
  • 00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:29.240
  • if he would come to Moab and curse Israel for him.
  • 00:12:29.250 --> 00:12:36.020
  • Balaam responded, but he soon discovered
  • 00:12:36.030 --> 00:12:38.080
  • that he could not command Jehovah.
  • 00:12:38.090 --> 00:12:40.220
  • Instead, God of Israel took command of him,
  • 00:12:40.230 --> 00:12:43.030
  • and this is kind of humorous.
  • 00:12:43.040 --> 00:12:44.220
  • When he was forbidden by God to go to Moab
  • 00:12:44.230 --> 00:12:47.050
  • on the first invitation, he assumed that God might change
  • 00:12:47.060 --> 00:12:50.060
  • his mind the second time around.
  • 00:12:50.070 --> 00:12:53.000
  • Balak offered him a larger fee, and Balaam thought it profitable
  • 00:12:53.010 --> 00:12:56.190
  • to argue with God if he could make that kind of money.
  • 00:12:56.200 --> 00:13:00.040
  • God allowed him finally to go, but after he got there,
  • 00:13:00.050 --> 00:13:03.160
  • he compelled him to bless Israel instead of curse them,
  • 00:13:03.170 --> 00:13:06.280
  • which didn't make his hirer very happy.
  • 00:13:06.290 --> 00:13:10.180
  • Balak offered him a larger fee.
  • 00:13:10.190 --> 00:13:12.220
  • Frustrated by his failure to meet the terms
  • 00:13:12.230 --> 00:13:15.190
  • of his contract, Balaam said, "I won't do this, but let me
  • 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:19.010
  • show you how you can corrupt the people of God.
  • 00:13:19.020 --> 00:13:22.110
  • What you have to do is use a stumbling block
  • 00:13:22.120 --> 00:13:25.280
  • in the form of enticement.
  • 00:13:25.290 --> 00:13:28.020
  • Get the people of Israel to intermarry with the Moabites.
  • 00:13:28.030 --> 00:13:33.140
  • These adulterous women will seduce them, and take part
  • 00:13:33.150 --> 00:13:38.090
  • of their religion, and marry it with theirs, and cause them
  • 00:13:38.100 --> 00:13:41.270
  • to offer idolatrous sacrifices, and commit fornication."
  • 00:13:41.280 --> 00:13:47.240
  • Thus, Balaam was the prime mover in the fall of Israel.
  • 00:13:47.250 --> 00:13:52.200
  • And if you know the story, you remember that it led
  • 00:13:52.210 --> 00:13:55.050
  • to a plague which caused 24.000 Israelites to die.
  • 00:13:55.060 --> 00:14:01.180
  • The doctrine of Balaam is this, listen carefully: if you can't
  • 00:14:01.190 --> 00:14:06.030
  • curse them, corrupt them.
  • 00:14:06.040 --> 00:14:10.100
  • If you can't curse them, corrupt them.
  • 00:14:10.110 --> 00:14:13.150
  • If somebody says, "What's the doctrine of Balaam?"
  • 00:14:13.160 --> 00:14:15.190
  • What the doctrine of Balaam is if you--if you can't curse them,
  • 00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:18.220
  • just corrupt them.
  • 00:14:18.230 --> 00:14:20.270
  • The sin of Pergamos was the toleration of evil
  • 00:14:20.280 --> 00:14:23.230
  • and the toleration of evil men.
  • 00:14:23.240 --> 00:14:25.210
  • And the error of Balaam is
  • 00:14:25.220 --> 00:14:27.250
  • mentioned in the New Testament in Jude verse 11, "Woe to them!
  • 00:14:27.260 --> 00:14:32.150
  • For they have gone in the way of Cain,
  • 00:14:32.160 --> 00:14:34.240
  • they have run greedily in the error of Balaam
  • 00:14:34.250 --> 00:14:37.080
  • for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah."
  • 00:14:37.090 --> 00:14:41.060
  • And also in 2 Peter 2:15, we read, "They have forsaken
  • 00:14:41.070 --> 00:14:44.200
  • the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam,
  • 00:14:44.210 --> 00:14:48.210
  • the son of Beor, who loved the wages
  • 00:14:48.220 --> 00:14:51.060
  • of unrighteousness."
  • 00:14:51.070 --> 00:14:54.100
  • The error and the way of Balaam are embodied
  • 00:14:54.110 --> 00:14:57.130
  • in the evil practice of using God for personal gain.
  • 00:14:57.140 --> 00:15:02.200
  • The late Donald Grey Barnhouse once wrote, "The very word
  • 00:15:02.210 --> 00:15:05.190
  • 'Pergamos' has in it the same root from which we get
  • 00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:08.200
  • our English word for bigamy and polygamy.
  • 00:15:08.210 --> 00:15:12.100
  • It is the word for marriage.
  • 00:15:12.110 --> 00:15:14.290
  • Pergamos signifies they mixed marriage
  • 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:17.030
  • in the most objectionable sense of the word.
  • 00:15:17.040 --> 00:15:19.250
  • It is a marriage of the organization
  • 00:15:19.260 --> 00:15:22.090
  • of the church of Jesus Christ with the world."
  • 00:15:22.100 --> 00:15:28.180
  • The doctrine of Balaam.
  • 00:15:28.190 --> 00:15:30.110
  • Then he mentions this other very strange thing,
  • 00:15:30.120 --> 00:15:33.070
  • the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.
  • 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:35.240
  • He says, "You people have done a lot of good things,
  • 00:15:35.250 --> 00:15:38.100
  • but you allowed compromise into your church.
  • 00:15:38.110 --> 00:15:41.010
  • You allowed people to come in and cause you to break down
  • 00:15:41.020 --> 00:15:43.220
  • your convictions, and you began to act like the world, and you
  • 00:15:43.230 --> 00:15:46.270
  • brought the world in among you."
  • 00:15:46.280 --> 00:15:48.150
  • And then he says, "You have the doctrine
  • 00:15:48.160 --> 00:15:50.060
  • of the Nicolaitans."
  • 00:15:50.070 --> 00:15:51.090
  • And the word "Nicolaitan" is derived from two words
  • 00:15:51.100 --> 00:15:53.260
  • which means "to conquer the laity."
  • 00:15:53.270 --> 00:15:57.070
  • And once again, most scholars believe that Nicolaitanism is
  • 00:15:57.080 --> 00:16:00.060
  • the subjugation of people in a hierarchy so that some
  • 00:16:00.070 --> 00:16:05.050
  • were lording it over others.
  • 00:16:05.060 --> 00:16:07.000
  • This is where the clergy and the laity came into play.
  • 00:16:07.010 --> 00:16:11.280
  • where some were promoted to places of high influence
  • 00:16:11.290 --> 00:16:15.100
  • and given authority over the laity.
  • 00:16:15.110 --> 00:16:19.010
  • We'll have more to say about that in a moment.
  • 00:16:19.020 --> 00:16:21.060
  • Now, Jesus has something to say
  • 00:16:21.070 --> 00:16:23.120
  • to this church in verse 16.
  • 00:16:23.130 --> 00:16:25.090
  • He said, "If you don't repent of the doctrine of Balaam,
  • 00:16:25.100 --> 00:16:30.080
  • and of allowing the priesthood of the believer
  • 00:16:30.090 --> 00:16:32.290
  • to be compromised in a laity-clergy division,
  • 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:37.010
  • I will come to you quickly and fight against them
  • 00:16:37.020 --> 00:16:39.240
  • with the sword of my mouth."
  • 00:16:39.250 --> 00:16:42.080
  • In the city of Pergamos,
  • 00:16:42.090 --> 00:16:45.000
  • what happened was the church was married with the world.
  • 00:16:45.010 --> 00:16:53.070
  • Now remember, in the letters to the churches,
  • 00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:56.160
  • we have representation of periods of time
  • 00:16:56.170 --> 00:16:59.260
  • in the history of the church.
  • 00:16:59.270 --> 00:17:01.140
  • Remember, the church in Ephesus represents the early church,
  • 00:17:01.150 --> 00:17:04.240
  • the apostles, the church that we read
  • 00:17:04.250 --> 00:17:06.250
  • about in the book of Acts.
  • 00:17:06.260 --> 00:17:08.270
  • And the church in Smyrna was the persecuted church.
  • 00:17:08.280 --> 00:17:11.150
  • Remember, right after the church was born, after the first ages
  • 00:17:11.160 --> 00:17:15.100
  • of the church, the church in history went
  • 00:17:15.110 --> 00:17:18.020
  • through a time of great persecution.
  • 00:17:18.030 --> 00:17:20.000
  • That's the Smyrnian period of the church, when suffering
  • 00:17:20.010 --> 00:17:22.240
  • was incredible.
  • 00:17:22.250 --> 00:17:23.290
  • Remember, it was the persecution that thrust the disciples
  • 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:26.190
  • out of Jerusalem and made it possible for the gospel
  • 00:17:26.200 --> 00:17:30.240
  • to be spread.
  • 00:17:30.250 --> 00:17:32.010
  • Isn't it interesting, the Lord said, "Go into all the world
  • 00:17:32.020 --> 00:17:33.150
  • and preach the gospels," and nobody ever left Jerusalem.
  • 00:17:33.160 --> 00:17:37.010
  • Kind of like us, right?
  • 00:17:37.020 --> 00:17:38.200
  • Sometimes, I think that we haven't done enough to reach
  • 00:17:38.210 --> 00:17:41.010
  • the world for Jesus Christ, so God's just brought the world
  • 00:17:41.020 --> 00:17:43.070
  • around us.
  • 00:17:43.080 --> 00:17:44.070
  • It's like the Lord said, "If you won't go
  • 00:17:44.080 --> 00:17:45.120
  • into all the world, I'll bring all the world to you."
  • 00:17:45.130 --> 00:17:47.200
  • Well, the book of Acts chapter 8, I believe in verse 4,
  • 00:17:47.210 --> 00:17:50.130
  • we're told that they wouldn't go into all the world and preach
  • 00:17:50.140 --> 00:17:52.250
  • the gospel, so the Lord sent persecution, and they were
  • 00:17:52.260 --> 00:17:55.040
  • scattered abroad, everywhere, except the apostles.
  • 00:17:55.050 --> 00:17:58.120
  • And guess what happened?
  • 00:17:58.130 --> 00:17:59.180
  • The Word of God was broadcast throughout all the world.
  • 00:17:59.190 --> 00:18:02.100
  • God sent persecution and the gospel was spread.
  • 00:18:02.110 --> 00:18:06.140
  • Those are the first two periods, the period of apostolic love
  • 00:18:06.150 --> 00:18:10.040
  • and the period of suffering.
  • 00:18:10.050 --> 00:18:12.040
  • But now, we're in this third period.
  • 00:18:12.050 --> 00:18:15.010
  • And this third period is most interesting.
  • 00:18:15.020 --> 00:18:18.080
  • During the Smyrnian period, when the church was suffering,
  • 00:18:18.090 --> 00:18:22.110
  • for 250 years Satan persecuted the church.
  • 00:18:22.120 --> 00:18:27.130
  • How many of you have ever read "Foxe's Book of Martyrs"?
  • 00:18:27.140 --> 00:18:30.200
  • It's not bedtime reading.
  • 00:18:30.210 --> 00:18:32.010
  • I suggest you don't read that before you go to bed.
  • 00:18:32.020 --> 00:18:34.180
  • It is a very disturbing book, not only describing
  • 00:18:34.190 --> 00:18:37.260
  • how Christians suffered for their faith, but the ways
  • 00:18:37.270 --> 00:18:42.090
  • in which that happened.
  • 00:18:42.100 --> 00:18:44.120
  • And people are telling me that in the last 10 years,
  • 00:18:44.130 --> 00:18:46.270
  • more people have suffered for Christ
  • 00:18:46.280 --> 00:18:48.170
  • than during this 250 years, when persecution rained
  • 00:18:48.180 --> 00:18:52.120
  • among Christendom.
  • 00:18:52.130 --> 00:18:55.220
  • Diocletian was the emperor who was reigning
  • 00:18:55.230 --> 00:18:59.180
  • during that time.
  • 00:18:59.190 --> 00:19:01.270
  • He literally tried to stamp out the church by persecuting them.
  • 00:19:01.280 --> 00:19:07.280
  • And then, Constantine came into power.
  • 00:19:07.290 --> 00:19:11.210
  • And for the next many years, Rome ruled the world using
  • 00:19:11.220 --> 00:19:17.050
  • the church as its number one vehicle.
  • 00:19:17.060 --> 00:19:21.210
  • Walter Scott said, "Constantine offered his gold
  • 00:19:21.220 --> 00:19:24.100
  • and patronage to the church, and it eagerly swallowed
  • 00:19:24.110 --> 00:19:27.020
  • the bait, sacrificed its conscience and allegiance
  • 00:19:27.030 --> 00:19:30.170
  • to its Lord, and the church and the world which hither fore
  • 00:19:30.180 --> 00:19:33.280
  • had walked apart were soon locked
  • 00:19:33.290 --> 00:19:36.030
  • in each other's arms, a fatal union."
  • 00:19:36.040 --> 00:19:40.220
  • Paul wrote to the Ephesians, and he warned them
  • 00:19:40.230 --> 00:19:42.250
  • about the savage wolves.
  • 00:19:42.260 --> 00:19:45.150
  • But in the next paragraph, he said something like this,
  • 00:19:45.160 --> 00:19:48.130
  • "After my departure, there will be those who rise
  • 00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:50.210
  • up from among you who will carry you away from the truth."
  • 00:19:50.220 --> 00:19:56.090
  • You know, Satan doesn't really care how he ruins
  • 00:19:56.100 --> 00:19:58.100
  • your life, he doesn't care how he ruins mine.
  • 00:19:58.110 --> 00:20:01.100
  • He doesn't care how he corrupts a church.
  • 00:20:01.110 --> 00:20:03.060
  • He will try anything.
  • 00:20:03.070 --> 00:20:04.060
  • If it doesn't work this way, he'll come
  • 00:20:04.070 --> 00:20:06.040
  • back with another way.
  • 00:20:06.050 --> 00:20:07.190
  • So, what was the Protestant Reformation?
  • 00:20:07.200 --> 00:20:11.000
  • The Protestant Reformation was the pulling back of the church
  • 00:20:11.010 --> 00:20:15.020
  • from its union with the Roman Empire.
  • 00:20:15.030 --> 00:20:18.220
  • It was the pulling away from the government's
  • 00:20:18.230 --> 00:20:22.010
  • influence in the life of the church.
  • 00:20:22.020 --> 00:20:25.230
  • I visited all the places where the Protestant Reformation
  • 00:20:25.240 --> 00:20:28.270
  • took place, and I'll never forget some of the prices
  • 00:20:28.280 --> 00:20:32.140
  • that were paid for men like Martin Luther,
  • 00:20:32.150 --> 00:20:36.110
  • who stood up against the evil of the church
  • 00:20:36.120 --> 00:20:39.120
  • that had been corrupted by the Roman government.
  • 00:20:39.130 --> 00:20:43.150
  • All of that's what happened during this period of time.
  • 00:20:43.160 --> 00:20:47.090
  • The lesson of Pergamos is this, it's the lesson of Balaam.
  • 00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:52.250
  • If you can't curse them, you can corrupt them.
  • 00:20:52.260 --> 00:20:58.180
  • And God knows that in our world today,
  • 00:20:58.190 --> 00:21:01.260
  • in our churches, in our families, in our homes,
  • 00:21:01.270 --> 00:21:05.070
  • Satan is still using that strategy wherever it
  • 00:21:05.080 --> 00:21:08.120
  • can be used.
  • 00:21:08.130 --> 00:21:11.180
  • Years and years ago, I found a statement that was written.
  • 00:21:11.190 --> 00:21:16.020
  • This is apparently a statement that belongs
  • 00:21:16.030 --> 00:21:20.080
  • to G. Campbell Morgan.
  • 00:21:20.090 --> 00:21:22.060
  • And I had forgotten where it was, I couldn't find it
  • 00:21:22.070 --> 00:21:24.220
  • until I was getting ready to preach this message,
  • 00:21:24.230 --> 00:21:27.090
  • and I want to read this statement to you.
  • 00:21:27.100 --> 00:21:28.270
  • This is what it says.
  • 00:21:28.280 --> 00:21:30.030
  • "There is a toleration which is treachery.
  • 00:21:30.040 --> 00:21:34.010
  • There is a peace which issues in paralysis.
  • 00:21:34.020 --> 00:21:38.150
  • There are hours when the church must say no to those who ask
  • 00:21:38.160 --> 00:21:42.100
  • communion with her, and in the doing of her work
  • 00:21:42.110 --> 00:21:45.090
  • upon the basis of compromise.
  • 00:21:45.100 --> 00:21:48.190
  • Such standing aloof may produce ostracism and persecution,
  • 00:21:48.200 --> 00:21:52.290
  • but it will maintain power and influence.
  • 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:56.270
  • If the church of God in the cities of today were
  • 00:21:56.280 --> 00:21:59.170
  • aloof from the maxims of the age, separated
  • 00:21:59.180 --> 00:22:03.110
  • from the materialistic philosophies of the schools,
  • 00:22:03.120 --> 00:22:06.100
  • bearing witness alone to the all-sufficiency of Christ
  • 00:22:06.110 --> 00:22:09.240
  • and the perfection of his salvation,
  • 00:22:09.250 --> 00:22:11.280
  • even though persecuted and ostracized and bruised,
  • 00:22:11.290 --> 00:22:15.220
  • it would be to the church that men would look
  • 00:22:15.230 --> 00:22:18.270
  • in the hour of their heartbreak and sorrow and national need.
  • 00:22:18.280 --> 00:22:23.200
  • The reason why men do not look to the church today is
  • 00:22:23.210 --> 00:22:27.060
  • that she has destroyed her own influence
  • 00:22:27.070 --> 00:22:30.030
  • by compromising with the things of the world."
  • 00:22:30.040 --> 00:22:34.260
  • So the people say today there's so much world in the church
  • 00:22:34.270 --> 00:22:38.000
  • and so much church in the world, you can't tell the difference
  • 00:22:38.010 --> 00:22:40.220
  • between the two.
  • 00:22:40.230 --> 00:22:42.080
  • And I could cite all of the statistics that come
  • 00:22:42.090 --> 00:22:44.270
  • from all of the surveys that say when it comes to how we live,
  • 00:22:44.280 --> 00:22:48.160
  • it's not a whole lot better than how the rest of the world
  • 00:22:48.170 --> 00:22:50.250
  • lives.
  • 00:22:50.260 --> 00:22:52.100
  • And people say, "Why has the church lost its influence?"
  • 00:22:52.110 --> 00:22:56.000
  • We have become so fixated on being relevant that we've
  • 00:22:56.010 --> 00:22:59.020
  • become totally irrelevant.
  • 00:22:59.030 --> 00:23:02.050
  • We've been so fixated on taking our mantra from the media,
  • 00:23:02.060 --> 00:23:06.060
  • and taking our marching orders from the marketplace
  • 00:23:06.070 --> 00:23:10.010
  • instead of from the Word of God, we now have nothing to say
  • 00:23:10.020 --> 00:23:12.220
  • to the world that's different than what they can get
  • 00:23:12.230 --> 00:23:15.150
  • just about anyplace else.
  • 00:23:15.160 --> 00:23:17.090
  • So, when we no longer are the church in the world,
  • 00:23:17.100 --> 00:23:21.200
  • why should we expect the world to ever come and ask
  • 00:23:21.210 --> 00:23:24.030
  • what we think about anything?
  • 00:23:24.040 --> 00:23:28.080
  • And I want to tell you there's time for us to get back.
  • 00:23:28.090 --> 00:23:32.290
  • Maybe this is the time.
  • 00:23:33.000 --> 00:23:34.210
  • Toleration is a word that is being overlooked.
  • 00:23:34.220 --> 00:23:38.180
  • There is a toleration which is treachery, and there is a peace
  • 00:23:38.190 --> 00:23:43.000
  • which is paralysis.
  • 00:23:43.010 --> 00:23:45.160
  • Now, I'm not a rabble-rouser, I'm not a fighter.
  • 00:23:45.170 --> 00:23:48.080
  • I don't like to get in shootouts with other people,
  • 00:23:48.090 --> 00:23:50.290
  • you know that.
  • 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:53.000
  • But ladies and gentlemen, we're walking into a period of time
  • 00:23:53.010 --> 00:23:55.090
  • that's very Pergaminian, where, if we're not careful, we're
  • 00:23:55.100 --> 00:23:59.030
  • going to lose our sense of who we are, and the church
  • 00:23:59.040 --> 00:24:02.190
  • will be just a byword, as it has become already
  • 00:24:02.200 --> 00:24:06.290
  • in so many places.
  • 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:09.170
  • So what do we do about that?
  • 00:24:09.180 --> 00:24:11.100
  • We ask the Lord to make us vigilant, we ask the Lord
  • 00:24:11.110 --> 00:24:13.210
  • to give us courage, we ask the Lord to help us
  • 00:24:13.220 --> 00:24:16.030
  • understand that we can still be the church.
  • 00:24:16.040 --> 00:24:19.130
  • If people want to ridicule us and say that we're intolerant
  • 00:24:19.140 --> 00:24:22.150
  • because we speak the truth, so be it.
  • 00:24:22.160 --> 00:24:25.130
  • But when we speak the truth, we stand in the train
  • 00:24:25.140 --> 00:24:27.160
  • of the Lord God who called us, who himself is the truth.
  • 00:24:27.170 --> 00:24:31.160
  • announcer: Dr. Jeremiah will return to close today's

  • announcer: Revelation is a mysterious book full of signs

  • announcer: And now, with one last word for today's
  • 00:26:00.240 --> 00:26:03.020
  • program, here is Dr. Jeremiah.
  • 00:26:03.030 --> 00:26:05.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: If a church like the one in Pergamos was
  • 00:26:06.150 --> 00:26:08.090
  • tempted with corruption and compromise,
  • 00:26:08.100 --> 00:26:10.220
  • it's because its members were.
  • 00:26:10.230 --> 00:26:13.140
  • So how do individuals insulate themselves
  • 00:26:13.150 --> 00:26:16.140
  • against modern manifestations of immorality?
  • 00:26:16.150 --> 00:26:20.200
  • How can we apply Christ's words to the church in Pergamos?
  • 00:26:20.210 --> 00:26:25.260
  • Well, it begins with being born again into a kingdom
  • 00:26:25.270 --> 00:26:29.160
  • with stronger and more eternal values
  • 00:26:29.170 --> 00:26:32.010
  • than those of this world.
  • 00:26:32.020 --> 00:26:34.200
  • And that new birth happens through faith in Christ.
  • 00:26:34.210 --> 00:26:38.240
  • If you would like to know more about being born again
  • 00:26:38.250 --> 00:26:41.030
  • into God's kingdom, let me send you
  • 00:26:41.040 --> 00:26:43.020

  • announcer: Next time, on "Turning Point."
  • 00:26:58.130 --> 00:27:00.070
  • Dr. Jeremiah: For this reason,
  • 00:27:00.100 --> 00:27:02.140
  • many are sick and some even die.
  • 00:27:02.150 --> 00:27:08.200
  • You know that we don't do a lot with church discipline
  • 00:27:08.210 --> 00:27:11.010
  • in our churches these days, but Almighty God is
  • 00:27:11.020 --> 00:27:13.150
  • still at work in disciplining churches.
  • 00:27:13.160 --> 00:27:16.110
  • announcer: Join us next time for Dr. Jeremiah's message,
  • 00:27:17.200 --> 00:27:20.050
  • "The Adulterous Church"
