  • Dr. David Jeremiah: Revelation, it is known
  • 00:00:03.180 --> 00:00:06.140
  • as a book of mysterious signs and wonders.
  • 00:00:06.150 --> 00:00:11.090
  • But the prophecy contained within speaks of more
  • 00:00:11.100 --> 00:00:13.290
  • than just what is to come in the end of days.
  • 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:19.200
  • Found near the beginning of the book, Revelation contains
  • 00:00:19.210 --> 00:00:22.230
  • a collection of seven letters, dispatches from Jesus, delivered
  • 00:00:22.240 --> 00:00:27.240
  • by Revelation's human author, John.
  • 00:00:27.250 --> 00:00:31.220
  • These letters aren't long.
  • 00:00:31.230 --> 00:00:33.070
  • In fact, they're actually quite brief
  • 00:00:33.080 --> 00:00:35.100
  • and straight to the point.
  • 00:00:35.110 --> 00:00:37.070
  • The recipients?
  • 00:00:37.080 --> 00:00:39.000
  • The early Christian churches.
  • 00:00:39.010 --> 00:00:41.180
  • But while these letters spoke directly to seven churches
  • 00:00:41.190 --> 00:00:44.030
  • of antiquity, they, like the book of Revelation,
  • 00:00:44.040 --> 00:00:47.160
  • are prophetic, prophetic in that by them, Christ's words
  • 00:00:47.170 --> 00:00:51.200
  • speak to all churches through all the ages.
  • 00:00:51.210 --> 00:00:55.240
  • Seven churches, seven letters, seven messages
  • 00:00:55.250 --> 00:01:00.260
  • for today's believers, relevant words of commendation,
  • 00:01:00.270 --> 00:01:04.290
  • tender encouragement, and of warning.
  • 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:08.060
  • So join me as we look into the Bible and discover
  • 00:01:08.070 --> 00:01:11.080
  • Christ's timeless words to his followers
  • 00:01:11.090 --> 00:01:14.200
  • through the seven churches of Revelation.
  • 00:01:14.210 --> 00:01:21.220
  • Dr. Jeremiah: Hello, I'm David Jeremiah.
  • 00:01:21.230 --> 00:01:23.180
  • Welcome to "Turning Point."
  • 00:01:23.190 --> 00:01:26.080
  • Here's something that may surprise you.
  • 00:01:26.090 --> 00:01:29.190
  • When Christ began his ministry, you probably could not have
  • 00:01:29.200 --> 00:01:33.100
  • picked him out of a crowd.
  • 00:01:33.110 --> 00:01:35.290
  • The prophet Isaiah foretold there would be nothing striking
  • 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:38.290
  • about his appearance.
  • 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:40.290
  • But after Jesus ascended to heaven, well, that's
  • 00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:44.150
  • a different story.
  • 00:01:44.160 --> 00:01:46.100
  • When Christ revealed himself to the Apostle John
  • 00:01:46.110 --> 00:01:48.290
  • on the island of Patmos, John knew exactly who he was.
  • 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:53.120
  • He was the Lord of the church, revealed in all of his glory.
  • 00:01:53.130 --> 00:01:58.190
  • The glorified Lord of the church is the subject
  • 00:01:58.200 --> 00:02:02.010
  • of today's message, which I have entitled,
  • 00:02:02.020 --> 00:02:04.250
  • "Christ in the Midst of His Churches."
  • 00:02:04.260 --> 00:02:07.270

  • 00:03:41.010 --> 00:03:50.160
  • Dr. Jeremiah: What does Jesus look like?
  • 00:03:51.050 --> 00:03:54.100
  • I mean, the answer is, of course, "We don't know."
  • 00:03:54.110 --> 00:03:57.170
  • None of us have ever seen him.
  • 00:03:57.180 --> 00:03:59.180
  • We don't know what Jesus actually looked like, but we can
  • 00:03:59.190 --> 00:04:02.240
  • make some assumptions that when he walked upon this earth, he
  • 00:04:02.250 --> 00:04:06.110
  • was probably in his early 30s when he began his ministry,
  • 00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:09.160
  • and he would not have had long hair because the culture
  • 00:04:09.170 --> 00:04:11.190
  • at that time would not have been that way for him.
  • 00:04:11.200 --> 00:04:15.000
  • It's fair to assume that Jesus had a beard.
  • 00:04:15.010 --> 00:04:17.190
  • He spent a lot of time outdoors, so his skin tone would likely be
  • 00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:21.070
  • darker, like an olive color.
  • 00:04:21.080 --> 00:04:23.290
  • It is typical of those in the Mediterranean countries
  • 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.050
  • to have skin like that.
  • 00:04:26.060 --> 00:04:27.130
  • If you've ever been there, you notice that immediately.
  • 00:04:27.140 --> 00:04:30.130
  • Now, here's an interesting thing.
  • 00:04:30.140 --> 00:04:31.240
  • How tall would he have been?
  • 00:04:31.250 --> 00:04:33.060
  • How tall was a 1st-century Jew?
  • 00:04:33.070 --> 00:04:35.150
  • From an analysis of skeletal remains,
  • 00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:37.150
  • archeologists have firmly established
  • 00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:39.170
  • that the average build of a Semite male at the time
  • 00:04:39.180 --> 00:04:42.130
  • of Jesus was 5'1" with an average weight
  • 00:04:42.140 --> 00:04:46.240
  • of about 110 pounds.
  • 00:04:46.250 --> 00:04:49.140
  • The Jewish people at that time were very small.
  • 00:04:49.150 --> 00:04:52.000
  • And Jesus was not a tall man, even though we see that in many
  • 00:04:52.010 --> 00:04:55.110
  • of the movies and pictures.
  • 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:57.270
  • But this picture of him from his time
  • 00:04:57.280 --> 00:04:59.210
  • in the New Testament Scriptures and the picture we are
  • 00:04:59.220 --> 00:05:02.220
  • about to study are not even remotely similar.
  • 00:05:02.230 --> 00:05:05.170
  • I mean, in this lesson, we're gonna see a picture of him
  • 00:05:05.180 --> 00:05:07.120
  • in his glorified body.
  • 00:05:07.130 --> 00:05:09.160
  • The picture that we view in Revelation 1 is not
  • 00:05:09.170 --> 00:05:12.060
  • the lowly Galilean of the Gospels,
  • 00:05:12.070 --> 00:05:14.160
  • but rather this is the glorified risen Christ,
  • 00:05:14.170 --> 00:05:17.260
  • the Almighty God who has eyes like a flame of fire that pierce
  • 00:05:17.270 --> 00:05:21.090
  • and burn.
  • 00:05:21.100 --> 00:05:23.260
  • I want to make, first of all, this point, that the vision
  • 00:05:23.270 --> 00:05:26.110
  • that we are about to see was the vision by John that he saw
  • 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:30.220
  • while he was in exile on the island of Patmos,
  • 00:05:30.230 --> 00:05:34.190
  • "I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation
  • 00:05:34.200 --> 00:05:38.150
  • and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, I was
  • 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:41.290
  • on the island that is called Patmos for the Word of God
  • 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.200
  • and for the testimony of Jesus Christ."
  • 00:05:45.210 --> 00:05:49.010
  • Now, isn't it interesting that this most formidable book
  • 00:05:49.020 --> 00:05:52.160
  • of prophecy was written by John while he was
  • 00:05:52.170 --> 00:05:56.000
  • basically in prison?
  • 00:05:56.010 --> 00:05:57.210
  • He was exiled on an island.
  • 00:05:57.220 --> 00:06:00.080
  • In the book of Revelation, we discover
  • 00:06:00.090 --> 00:06:01.200
  • that the Apostle John enjoyed no immunity from tribulation.
  • 00:06:01.210 --> 00:06:06.170
  • Don't let anybody tell you that great things can't come
  • 00:06:06.180 --> 00:06:09.190
  • from insignificant beginnings.
  • 00:06:09.200 --> 00:06:12.080
  • The insignificant beginning of John was that one day
  • 00:06:12.090 --> 00:06:14.250
  • he was in his fishing boat and Jesus came along and said,
  • 00:06:14.260 --> 00:06:17.220
  • "Follow me."
  • 00:06:17.230 --> 00:06:18.250
  • And John followed him, and he followed him all the way
  • 00:06:18.260 --> 00:06:20.290
  • to the isle of Patmos, where he gave us this book
  • 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:24.000
  • we are about to study.
  • 00:06:24.010 --> 00:06:26.200
  • The Bible says that he was banished to Patmos, a small,
  • 00:06:26.210 --> 00:06:30.180
  • barren, rocky island in the Aegean Sea,
  • 00:06:30.190 --> 00:06:34.030
  • 10 miles long, 6 miles wide, located in about 70 miles south
  • 00:06:34.040 --> 00:06:39.200
  • of Ephesus.
  • 00:06:39.210 --> 00:06:41.090
  • Tacitus, the historian, describes this time of trial
  • 00:06:41.100 --> 00:06:44.140
  • in these words, "The sea was thickly strewn with exiles,
  • 00:06:44.150 --> 00:06:49.020
  • the crags were stained with the blood of victims."
  • 00:06:49.030 --> 00:06:53.070
  • And so because, as we're going to learn, of his testimony
  • 00:06:53.080 --> 00:06:57.050
  • for the Lord, John was sent to this island, where they
  • 00:06:57.060 --> 00:07:00.270
  • intended him to be until his death.
  • 00:07:00.280 --> 00:07:04.030
  • They just wanted to get him out of circulation.
  • 00:07:04.040 --> 00:07:06.120
  • So they banished him to the isle of Patmos.
  • 00:07:06.130 --> 00:07:09.280
  • It was in these dark circumstances
  • 00:07:09.290 --> 00:07:11.240
  • on this island, isolated from loved ones
  • 00:07:11.250 --> 00:07:14.080
  • and all kinds of human fellowship
  • 00:07:14.090 --> 00:07:16.090
  • that John received the most extensive revelation
  • 00:07:16.100 --> 00:07:18.280
  • of future things that's ever been shown
  • 00:07:18.290 --> 00:07:21.030
  • to any man.
  • 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:23.060
  • He was shut out form the world, but he was shut up to God.
  • 00:07:23.070 --> 00:07:26.260
  • The place of his banishment became the place of the vision
  • 00:07:26.270 --> 00:07:29.040
  • of divine glory.
  • 00:07:29.050 --> 00:07:30.140
  • And John's exile from the world gave him power over the world.
  • 00:07:30.150 --> 00:07:35.010
  • He had nothing to lose.
  • 00:07:35.020 --> 00:07:36.160
  • He had nothing left to give.
  • 00:07:36.170 --> 00:07:38.180
  • And so, the Bible says, "He was punished for the Word of God
  • 00:07:38.190 --> 00:07:44.030
  • and the testimony of Jesus Christ."
  • 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:46.180
  • And so, it seemed only logical on the part of those
  • 00:07:46.190 --> 00:07:49.240
  • who wanted to destroy the church that if they could
  • 00:07:49.250 --> 00:07:52.060
  • get rid of the influence of the leader, they could
  • 00:07:52.070 --> 00:07:54.170
  • diminish the influence of the church.
  • 00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:57.070
  • Even though John was the disciple that Jesus loved,
  • 00:07:57.080 --> 00:08:00.190
  • still, he became a particular participant
  • 00:08:00.200 --> 00:08:04.280
  • in tribulation and suffering.
  • 00:08:04.290 --> 00:08:06.290
  • How many of you know that if God loves you, that doesn't mean you
  • 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:08.240
  • won't go through tribulation?
  • 00:08:08.250 --> 00:08:10.090
  • God loves us.
  • 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:11.040
  • He always has. He always will.
  • 00:08:11.050 --> 00:08:12.190
  • But I want to tell you somethin'.
  • 00:08:12.200 --> 00:08:13.260
  • You're gonna have trouble anyway, right?
  • 00:08:13.270 --> 00:08:16.050
  • Only difference is now you know that God's going to help you
  • 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:17.280
  • through it.
  • 00:08:17.290 --> 00:08:19.000
  • But we don't get a pass from tribulation
  • 00:08:19.010 --> 00:08:20.250
  • just because we're Christians.
  • 00:08:20.260 --> 00:08:22.000
  • And I want to tell you somethin'.
  • 00:08:22.010 --> 00:08:23.020
  • You don't get a pass 'cause you're a pastor either.
  • 00:08:23.030 --> 00:08:25.170
  • Tribulation follows us, and the Bible tells us
  • 00:08:25.180 --> 00:08:27.280
  • that's the way it is.
  • 00:08:27.290 --> 00:08:29.010
  • Listen to Romans chapter 5, "Not only that,
  • 00:08:29.020 --> 00:08:31.290
  • but we also glory in tribulation, knowing
  • 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.190
  • that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance,
  • 00:08:34.200 --> 00:08:38.040
  • character; and character, hope.
  • 00:08:38.050 --> 00:08:40.120
  • Now, hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been
  • 00:08:40.130 --> 00:08:44.060
  • poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit he has
  • 00:08:44.070 --> 00:08:47.220
  • given us."
  • 00:08:47.230 --> 00:08:48.280
  • And John 16:33 says it this way, "'In the world you will have
  • 00:08:48.290 --> 00:08:53.260
  • tribulation.'" Say that with me, "'In the world
  • 00:08:53.270 --> 00:08:56.170
  • you will have tribulation.'" But then he says, "'But be
  • 00:08:56.180 --> 00:08:59.170
  • of good cheer, I have overcome the world,'" amen.
  • 00:08:59.180 --> 00:09:03.140
  • So this vision was seen by John while in exile
  • 00:09:03.150 --> 00:09:06.040
  • on the isle of Patmos.
  • 00:09:06.050 --> 00:09:07.200
  • Number two, this vision was received by John
  • 00:09:07.210 --> 00:09:10.230
  • while in the spirit on the Lord's Day.
  • 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:13.080
  • Notice verse 10, he said, "I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day,
  • 00:09:13.090 --> 00:09:17.070
  • and I heard behind me a voice, as of a trumpet."
  • 00:09:17.080 --> 00:09:20.250
  • What happened to John was that his normal bodily condition
  • 00:09:20.260 --> 00:09:23.230
  • of time and space limitation was set aside.
  • 00:09:23.240 --> 00:09:27.090
  • And now he was in the realm of the spirit.
  • 00:09:27.100 --> 00:09:30.090
  • And he was elevated so that he could go places he'd never been
  • 00:09:30.100 --> 00:09:33.090
  • before.
  • 00:09:33.100 --> 00:09:34.140
  • And he could actually move forward in time so that he could
  • 00:09:34.150 --> 00:09:37.220
  • see the Day of the Lord, which is the time
  • 00:09:37.230 --> 00:09:40.180
  • of Jacob's trouble, the tribulation.
  • 00:09:40.190 --> 00:09:42.090
  • He could see all of that before it actually would happen.
  • 00:09:42.100 --> 00:09:45.150
  • Number three, the vision was to be written by John
  • 00:09:45.160 --> 00:09:48.120
  • and sent to the seven churches.
  • 00:09:48.130 --> 00:09:51.000
  • And that's exactly what the Scripture says.
  • 00:09:51.010 --> 00:09:52.260
  • Read with me again, "Saying, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega,
  • 00:09:52.270 --> 00:09:56.130
  • the First and the Last,' and, 'What you see, write it
  • 00:09:56.140 --> 00:09:59.110
  • in a book and send it to the seven churches
  • 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:02.230
  • which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos,
  • 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:06.230
  • to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia,
  • 00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:09.180
  • and to Laodicea.' Then I turned to see the voice
  • 00:10:09.190 --> 00:10:12.250
  • that spoke with me.
  • 00:10:12.260 --> 00:10:13.260
  • And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands."
  • 00:10:13.270 --> 00:10:18.180
  • Now, the Bible says this, "John turns back.
  • 00:10:18.190 --> 00:10:21.080
  • He sees," and here's some of the symbolism
  • 00:10:21.090 --> 00:10:23.230
  • of Revelation, "he sees seven golden lampstands."
  • 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:26.270
  • They appear before him.
  • 00:10:26.280 --> 00:10:27.230
  • And the Bible tells us what they are.
  • 00:10:27.240 --> 00:10:30.060
  • We don't have to wonder.
  • 00:10:30.070 --> 00:10:31.060
  • The Bible tells us, "The seven golden lampstands
  • 00:10:31.070 --> 00:10:33.190
  • represent the seven churches."
  • 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:35.290
  • What seven churches?
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:37.200
  • The seven churches to which he's to address these letters,
  • 00:10:37.210 --> 00:10:40.240
  • each of them very significant.
  • 00:10:40.250 --> 00:10:43.090
  • The Bible says, "In the midst of the lampstands he sees
  • 00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:46.080
  • someone."
  • 00:10:46.090 --> 00:10:47.120
  • And it says, "He sees someone like unto the Son of Man."
  • 00:10:47.130 --> 00:10:50.270
  • These seven lampstands give us a picture.
  • 00:10:50.280 --> 00:10:53.130
  • They're in a circle.
  • 00:10:53.140 --> 00:10:54.140
  • And in the center of the circle is the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:10:54.150 --> 00:10:56.220
  • And the Bible says, "These seven lampstands
  • 00:10:56.230 --> 00:10:58.230
  • which are pictures of the churches,
  • 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:00.150
  • they shine light on Jesus."
  • 00:11:00.160 --> 00:11:02.120
  • How many of you know that every church
  • 00:11:02.130 --> 00:11:03.260
  • that calls itself an evangelical church
  • 00:11:03.270 --> 00:11:05.190
  • has one major role, shine the light on Jesus, amen?
  • 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:10.090
  • When we shine the light on Jesus, everything is right.
  • 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:13.180
  • Please note that the candlestick is not the light,
  • 00:11:13.190 --> 00:11:17.050
  • but the bearer of the light.
  • 00:11:17.060 --> 00:11:19.090
  • There is no inherent light in a candlestick.
  • 00:11:19.100 --> 00:11:21.170
  • If you don't put light in it, it's not gonna have any light.
  • 00:11:21.180 --> 00:11:24.030
  • You light the candle.
  • 00:11:24.040 --> 00:11:26.010
  • It doesn't have any light of its own.
  • 00:11:26.020 --> 00:11:28.070
  • The light is the Lord's, not the church's.
  • 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:30.060
  • And the purpose of the light is to bring glory to the Father
  • 00:11:30.070 --> 00:11:33.160
  • who is in heaven.
  • 00:11:33.170 --> 00:11:34.170
  • We light up Jesus so that the Father
  • 00:11:34.180 --> 00:11:37.240
  • will be glorified.
  • 00:11:37.250 --> 00:11:38.220
  • You say, "Pastor, where did you read that?"
  • 00:11:38.230 --> 00:11:40.100
  • I'm glad you asked me.
  • 00:11:40.110 --> 00:11:41.190
  • Let me show you where I read it.
  • 00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:43.090
  • Matthew 5:16, "'Let your light so shine before men, that they
  • 00:11:43.100 --> 00:11:49.000
  • may see your good works,'" and what's the rest of it?
  • 00:11:49.010 --> 00:11:51.190
  • "Glorify your Father who is in heaven.'"
  • 00:11:51.200 --> 00:11:54.240
  • Or 2 Corinthians 4:6, "For it is the God who commanded light
  • 00:11:54.250 --> 00:11:59.180
  • to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts
  • 00:11:59.190 --> 00:12:03.080
  • to give the light of the knowledge of the glory
  • 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:05.160
  • of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
  • 00:12:05.170 --> 00:12:08.020
  • Now, the writer begins to tell us that number four,
  • 00:12:08.030 --> 00:12:13.070
  • the vision is of the glorified risen Son of God.
  • 00:12:13.080 --> 00:12:17.180
  • He sees, first of all, the churches.
  • 00:12:17.190 --> 00:12:19.290
  • But then, as he looks at the churches, the light
  • 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:22.060
  • shines on what's in the center.
  • 00:12:22.070 --> 00:12:24.060
  • And what's in the center is Jesus.
  • 00:12:24.070 --> 00:12:26.090
  • Notice, first of all, the position of Christ
  • 00:12:26.100 --> 00:12:28.250
  • in the vision, verse 13, "And in the midst
  • 00:12:28.260 --> 00:12:31.250
  • of the seven lampstands one like the Son of Man."
  • 00:12:31.260 --> 00:12:36.210
  • Now, the Bible goes on to give us not just the position
  • 00:12:36.220 --> 00:12:39.100
  • of Christ in the vision, but secondly, the portrait
  • 00:12:39.110 --> 00:12:42.120
  • of Christ in the vision, and he begins with his clothing.
  • 00:12:42.130 --> 00:12:46.140
  • Notice, Revelation 1:13, "I saw one like the Son of Man, clothed
  • 00:12:46.150 --> 00:12:50.120
  • with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest
  • 00:12:50.130 --> 00:12:54.130
  • with a golden band."
  • 00:12:54.140 --> 00:12:56.140
  • He had a long flowing robe.
  • 00:12:56.150 --> 00:12:58.220
  • That spoke of his greatness.
  • 00:12:58.230 --> 00:13:02.090
  • And here's what the Bible says about his head and his hair,
  • 00:13:02.100 --> 00:13:05.000
  • verse 14, "His head and hair were white like wool,
  • 00:13:05.010 --> 00:13:08.210
  • as white as snow."
  • 00:13:08.220 --> 00:13:12.010
  • I want to pause just a moment and say there is glory
  • 00:13:12.020 --> 00:13:14.000
  • in white hair.
  • 00:13:14.010 --> 00:13:17.230
  • White hair is godly.
  • 00:13:17.240 --> 00:13:20.230
  • White hair is like Jesus'.
  • 00:13:20.240 --> 00:13:25.260
  • Don't dye it, keep it.
  • 00:13:25.270 --> 00:13:28.260
  • White hair is good for us.
  • 00:13:28.270 --> 00:13:34.020
  • Now, the white head and the white hair speak
  • 00:13:34.030 --> 00:13:37.110
  • of the eternity or duration of the Lord.
  • 00:13:37.120 --> 00:13:40.060
  • It's a picture, the snowy white hair of his head
  • 00:13:40.070 --> 00:13:42.110
  • is not the white hair of senility,
  • 00:13:42.120 --> 00:13:44.030
  • but the absolute holiness and wisdom that is
  • 00:13:44.040 --> 00:13:47.040
  • the part of a judge.
  • 00:13:47.050 --> 00:13:48.080
  • Do you know, in the old time, when a person was a judge,
  • 00:13:48.090 --> 00:13:50.170
  • they put on a hairpiece that was white.
  • 00:13:50.180 --> 00:13:53.200
  • Why did that do that?
  • 00:13:53.210 --> 00:13:54.200
  • Because it signified the solemnity of the moment,
  • 00:13:54.210 --> 00:13:56.250
  • the seriousness of the moment, and the dignity of the judge.
  • 00:13:56.260 --> 00:14:00.220
  • And then notice, he next describes his eyes,
  • 00:14:00.230 --> 00:14:03.260
  • Revelation 1:14, "And his eyes like a flame of fire."
  • 00:14:03.270 --> 00:14:09.100
  • Now, John had seen Jesus' eyes.
  • 00:14:09.110 --> 00:14:11.200
  • He had seen Jesus' eyes filled with tears.
  • 00:14:11.210 --> 00:14:14.080
  • He saw Jesus' eyes the day Jesus called him from Galilee
  • 00:14:14.090 --> 00:14:17.120
  • to be his disciple.
  • 00:14:17.130 --> 00:14:18.210
  • But now, he sees the eyes of Jesus
  • 00:14:18.220 --> 00:14:21.130
  • in his glorified future role, and the Bible says,
  • 00:14:21.140 --> 00:14:23.230
  • "When he looks and sees the eyes of Jesus, they're like fire."
  • 00:14:23.240 --> 00:14:28.020
  • His eyes penetrate into the deepest depths
  • 00:14:28.030 --> 00:14:30.230
  • of the soul.
  • 00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:31.290
  • They see everything.
  • 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:33.050
  • His x-ray vision and his anger are symbolized by the close-up
  • 00:14:33.060 --> 00:14:37.040
  • of his eyes.
  • 00:14:37.050 --> 00:14:40.070
  • Psalm 11:4 puts it this way, "The Lord is in holy temple,
  • 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:44.100
  • the Lord's throne is in heaven; his eyes behold, his eyelids
  • 00:14:44.110 --> 00:14:49.070
  • test the sons of men."
  • 00:14:49.080 --> 00:14:53.140
  • What that means, men and women, is whatever you are doing
  • 00:14:53.150 --> 00:14:56.250
  • that you think God doesn't know about, forget it.
  • 00:14:56.260 --> 00:14:59.290
  • His eyes see everything.
  • 00:15:00.020 --> 00:15:01.160
  • His eyes pierce right through all the veneer
  • 00:15:01.170 --> 00:15:04.060
  • we put up, all the spin we give to life, all the things we do
  • 00:15:04.070 --> 00:15:07.180
  • to try to think we're hiding from God.
  • 00:15:07.190 --> 00:15:09.060
  • How foolish can we be?
  • 00:15:09.070 --> 00:15:11.010
  • John sees the Lord as he really is.
  • 00:15:11.020 --> 00:15:14.130
  • He sees him with fire in his eyes.
  • 00:15:14.140 --> 00:15:18.130
  • And then the Scripture describes his feet.
  • 00:15:18.140 --> 00:15:21.110
  • Revelation 1:15, "His feet were like brass, as if refined
  • 00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:25.160
  • in a furnace."
  • 00:15:25.170 --> 00:15:27.170
  • Now, brass in the Scripture represents judgment.
  • 00:15:27.180 --> 00:15:30.220
  • The altar in the Jewish tabernacle,
  • 00:15:30.230 --> 00:15:33.070
  • for instance, was made out of brass.
  • 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:35.240
  • And the feet of brass speak of the time when he will put
  • 00:15:35.250 --> 00:15:38.170
  • all of his enemies and every evil power
  • 00:15:38.180 --> 00:15:40.270
  • beneath his feet.
  • 00:15:40.280 --> 00:15:42.180
  • Burnished brass is military brass.
  • 00:15:42.190 --> 00:15:45.090
  • And the foes of Jesus one day will be crushed under the feet
  • 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:49.120
  • of the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:15:49.130 --> 00:15:50.200
  • You're seeing this whole picture of the Lord
  • 00:15:50.210 --> 00:15:53.170
  • in these first few verses.
  • 00:15:53.180 --> 00:15:55.220
  • He goes, number five, to describe his mouth.
  • 00:15:55.230 --> 00:15:59.000
  • And he has a lot to say about that in verses 15 and 16,
  • 00:15:59.010 --> 00:16:02.180
  • "And his voice as the sound of many waters;
  • 00:16:02.190 --> 00:16:05.220
  • and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword."
  • 00:16:05.230 --> 00:16:09.210
  • Notice, first of all, the sound of his voice.
  • 00:16:09.220 --> 00:16:12.130
  • John said that when he saw Jesus in the midst of the lampstands
  • 00:16:12.140 --> 00:16:17.010
  • with his white hair, and his burnished feet,
  • 00:16:17.020 --> 00:16:20.270
  • and his fiery eyes, all of a sudden, he spoke.
  • 00:16:20.280 --> 00:16:24.270
  • And he said, "When he spoke above the boisterous waves,
  • 00:16:24.280 --> 00:16:28.240
  • there was the thunderous voice of the Son of Man."
  • 00:16:28.250 --> 00:16:33.030
  • The Bible says that, "God's majesty in Jesus
  • 00:16:33.040 --> 00:16:35.160
  • is such that when he speaks, it reminded John of the voice
  • 00:16:35.170 --> 00:16:39.120
  • of the sound of many waters," full of majesty, and probably
  • 00:16:39.130 --> 00:16:44.040
  • somewhat frightening.
  • 00:16:44.050 --> 00:16:47.060
  • That was the sound of his voice.
  • 00:16:47.070 --> 00:16:49.030
  • Notice, the sword of his mouth, verse 16, "And out of His mouth
  • 00:16:49.040 --> 00:16:52.130
  • went a sharp two-edged sword."
  • 00:16:52.140 --> 00:16:54.190
  • The instrument of warfare is the two-edged sword
  • 00:16:54.200 --> 00:16:57.090
  • that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
  • 00:16:57.100 --> 00:16:59.160
  • This sword is the Word of God.
  • 00:16:59.170 --> 00:17:02.120
  • The Bible tells us, "The Word of God is living
  • 00:17:02.130 --> 00:17:04.110
  • and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,"
  • 00:17:04.120 --> 00:17:07.160
  • Hebrews 4:12.
  • 00:17:07.170 --> 00:17:08.220
  • And Ephesians 6:17 tells us to, "Take
  • 00:17:08.230 --> 00:17:11.080
  • the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God."
  • 00:17:11.090 --> 00:17:14.150
  • Out of his mouth came the power of the Word of God,
  • 00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:18.140
  • cutting sharply.
  • 00:17:18.150 --> 00:17:22.100
  • And then notice his hands, verse 16, "And he had
  • 00:17:22.110 --> 00:17:27.030
  • in his right hand seven stars."
  • 00:17:27.040 --> 00:17:31.100
  • The Bible says that as he sees Jesus, Jesus is standing
  • 00:17:31.110 --> 00:17:34.150
  • there, and he's got seven stars in his right hand.
  • 00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:37.170
  • And those stars represent the pastors
  • 00:17:37.180 --> 00:17:39.220
  • of the seven churches, which in essence say
  • 00:17:39.230 --> 00:17:41.280
  • that the pastors who serve the seven churches stand
  • 00:17:41.290 --> 00:17:45.200
  • in the authority of Jesus Christ, and he holds
  • 00:17:45.210 --> 00:17:47.280
  • them in his right hand, not only as a symbol of his authority,
  • 00:17:47.290 --> 00:17:51.070
  • but as a symbol of his sovereignty
  • 00:17:51.080 --> 00:17:54.000
  • and his protection.
  • 00:17:54.010 --> 00:17:55.210
  • This picture that John sees?
  • 00:17:55.220 --> 00:17:57.200
  • The seven churches surrounding him, the Son of Man
  • 00:17:57.210 --> 00:18:01.200
  • in the center.
  • 00:18:01.210 --> 00:18:03.040
  • This majestic picture of the Son of Man, his hair,
  • 00:18:03.050 --> 00:18:05.140
  • his feet, his mouth, his eyes.
  • 00:18:05.150 --> 00:18:09.020
  • And in the right hand of the Son of Man
  • 00:18:09.030 --> 00:18:11.200
  • are the seven pastors, the seven stars
  • 00:18:11.210 --> 00:18:17.050
  • of the seven churches.
  • 00:18:17.060 --> 00:18:19.130
  • And then number seven, we read about his face.
  • 00:18:19.140 --> 00:18:22.230
  • "He had in his right hand seven stars,
  • 00:18:22.240 --> 00:18:24.190
  • and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword,
  • 00:18:24.200 --> 00:18:26.290
  • and his face, his countenance was like the sun shining
  • 00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:30.240
  • in its strength."
  • 00:18:30.250 --> 00:18:33.110
  • I would imagine John struggling with the words to describe
  • 00:18:33.120 --> 00:18:36.030
  • this vision that he saw.
  • 00:18:36.040 --> 00:18:38.160
  • Let me tell you, number five, the vision paralyzed John
  • 00:18:38.170 --> 00:18:42.050
  • until he was touched by the Lord.
  • 00:18:42.060 --> 00:18:44.200
  • Notice verse 17, "And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead.
  • 00:18:44.210 --> 00:18:52.270
  • And he laid his right hand on me, saying to me,
  • 00:18:52.280 --> 00:18:54.160
  • 'Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.'"
  • 00:18:54.170 --> 00:18:59.030
  • Even though John had known this Jesus personally,
  • 00:18:59.040 --> 00:19:02.100
  • had laid his head upon his breast, it is not
  • 00:19:02.110 --> 00:19:05.110
  • a surprise that he fell at Jesus' feet as dead.
  • 00:19:05.120 --> 00:19:08.030
  • He was overwhelmed by the majesty
  • 00:19:08.040 --> 00:19:10.150
  • of the glorified Son of Man.
  • 00:19:10.160 --> 00:19:14.200
  • When you see Jesus as he really is in glory,
  • 00:19:14.210 --> 00:19:20.050
  • and I can't even pretend to describe it as I should,
  • 00:19:20.060 --> 00:19:25.070
  • you will be so overwhelmed with his glory and majesty
  • 00:19:25.080 --> 00:19:29.040
  • you will fall on your knees before him and say, "Surely,
  • 00:19:29.050 --> 00:19:32.120
  • this is the Son of God."
  • 00:19:32.130 --> 00:19:35.220
  • And you will worship him.
  • 00:19:35.230 --> 00:19:37.240
  • And the Bible tells us that as he was on his face
  • 00:19:37.250 --> 00:19:41.130
  • before the vision of the glorified Lord,
  • 00:19:41.140 --> 00:19:44.120
  • "Jesus laid his right hand on him, saying to him,
  • 00:19:44.130 --> 00:19:49.100
  • 'Do not be afraid.'" In the midst of John's
  • 00:19:49.110 --> 00:19:53.160
  • paralyzing fear, the Lord touched him with the right hand
  • 00:19:53.170 --> 00:19:56.220
  • and spoke to him with the voice who's sound was as many waters,
  • 00:19:56.230 --> 00:20:01.230
  • and both the touch and the words were used to encourage John.
  • 00:20:01.240 --> 00:20:05.090
  • Immediately following the words, "Fear not," John was given
  • 00:20:05.100 --> 00:20:08.060
  • three reasons why he should not be afraid.
  • 00:20:08.070 --> 00:20:11.140
  • These are good reasons for us.
  • 00:20:11.150 --> 00:20:13.020
  • Number one: "'Fear not for I am the eternal God,'" verse 17.
  • 00:20:13.030 --> 00:20:18.240
  • "John, don't be afraid.
  • 00:20:18.250 --> 00:20:20.160
  • I am the one who is, and who was, and who will be."
  • 00:20:20.170 --> 00:20:25.270
  • "Do not be afraid, I am the First and the Last.
  • 00:20:25.280 --> 00:20:28.120
  • I am First in that no one is before me.
  • 00:20:28.130 --> 00:20:31.060
  • I am Last in that none will follow me.
  • 00:20:31.070 --> 00:20:33.190
  • I am the living one."
  • 00:20:33.200 --> 00:20:35.090
  • His name is not I was, or I will be, his name is I am.
  • 00:20:35.100 --> 00:20:40.280
  • "So, John, don't be afraid.
  • 00:20:40.290 --> 00:20:42.040
  • I'm the eternal one."
  • 00:20:42.050 --> 00:20:43.270
  • And then secondly, "John, don't be afraid because I'm
  • 00:20:43.280 --> 00:20:46.210
  • the resurrected Christ.
  • 00:20:46.220 --> 00:20:48.260
  • I was dead and behold.
  • 00:20:48.270 --> 00:20:50.080
  • I am alive forevermore."
  • 00:20:50.090 --> 00:20:52.100
  • Peter says that, "We have been begotten again
  • 00:20:52.110 --> 00:20:54.080
  • unto a living hope by the resurrection
  • 00:20:54.090 --> 00:20:55.280
  • of Jesus Christ from the dead."
  • 00:20:55.290 --> 00:20:57.160
  • Christ says, "I am dead," historical fact
  • 00:20:57.170 --> 00:21:00.240
  • of his crucifixion.
  • 00:21:00.250 --> 00:21:02.000
  • "I am living," the continuous state
  • 00:21:02.010 --> 00:21:04.030
  • of his endless life.
  • 00:21:04.040 --> 00:21:05.070
  • And, "I was really dead.
  • 00:21:05.080 --> 00:21:06.290
  • I am really living," and that will be an encouragement
  • 00:21:07.000 --> 00:21:09.240
  • to anybody who understand it.
  • 00:21:09.250 --> 00:21:11.270
  • What is the one thing we fear the most?
  • 00:21:11.280 --> 00:21:13.280
  • Death.
  • 00:21:13.290 --> 00:21:15.090
  • And here is this Lord putting his hand upon John on the isle
  • 00:21:15.100 --> 00:21:18.230
  • of Patmos as he sees this incredible vision,
  • 00:21:18.240 --> 00:21:20.280
  • and saying, "John, don't be afraid.
  • 00:21:20.290 --> 00:21:24.030
  • I know this is a fearsome thing you have seen, this vision
  • 00:21:24.040 --> 00:21:27.060
  • that you have been privileged to see.
  • 00:21:27.070 --> 00:21:29.070
  • But don't be afraid.
  • 00:21:29.080 --> 00:21:31.160
  • I am the eternal God.
  • 00:21:31.170 --> 00:21:34.050
  • And I am the one who came back from the grave."
  • 00:21:34.060 --> 00:21:37.130
  • And then, thirdly, "I am the one who has in my power
  • 00:21:37.140 --> 00:21:42.010
  • the keys of death and hell."
  • 00:21:42.020 --> 00:21:45.060
  • "Fear not," he says, "for the power over death
  • 00:21:45.070 --> 00:21:48.100
  • and the grave is in my hand, and I will protect you."
  • 00:21:48.110 --> 00:21:53.280
  • Let us walk away from here full of the glory
  • 00:21:53.290 --> 00:21:56.170
  • of the Lord Jesus, but not full of the fear of him.
  • 00:21:56.180 --> 00:22:00.280
  • We have nothing to fear from the one who loved us
  • 00:22:00.290 --> 00:22:03.250
  • and gave himself for us.
  • 00:22:03.260 --> 00:22:06.040
  • I was reading some months ago the book that Max Lucado wrote
  • 00:22:06.050 --> 00:22:09.160
  • on fear.
  • 00:22:09.170 --> 00:22:11.060
  • And I want to finish with something that he said.
  • 00:22:11.070 --> 00:22:14.090
  • He said, "We fear being sued.
  • 00:22:14.100 --> 00:22:16.040
  • We fear finishing last.
  • 00:22:16.050 --> 00:22:18.120
  • We fear going broke.
  • 00:22:18.130 --> 00:22:19.250
  • We fear the mole on our back, the new kid on the block,
  • 00:22:19.260 --> 00:22:23.010
  • the sound of the clock as it ticks us closer
  • 00:22:23.020 --> 00:22:25.050
  • to the grave.
  • 00:22:25.060 --> 00:22:27.050
  • We sophisticate investment plans, create
  • 00:22:27.060 --> 00:22:29.120
  • elaborate security systems, and legislate stronger military.
  • 00:22:29.130 --> 00:22:34.020
  • Yet we depend on mood-altering drugs
  • 00:22:34.030 --> 00:22:36.070
  • more than any other generation in history.
  • 00:22:36.080 --> 00:22:38.140
  • Moreover, ordinary children today are more fearful
  • 00:22:38.150 --> 00:22:41.170
  • than psychiatric patients were in the 1950s.
  • 00:22:41.180 --> 00:22:46.180
  • Fear herds us into a prison and slams the door.
  • 00:22:46.190 --> 00:22:50.090
  • Wouldn't it be good to walk out?
  • 00:22:50.100 --> 00:22:53.200
  • This is Jesus' desire for you.
  • 00:22:53.210 --> 00:22:55.250
  • His most common command emerges from the, "Fear not," genre.
  • 00:22:55.260 --> 00:22:58.280
  • The Gospels list some 125 Christ-issued
  • 00:22:58.290 --> 00:23:02.110
  • imperatives.
  • 00:23:02.120 --> 00:23:03.140
  • Of these, 21 urge us not to be afraid, or have courage,
  • 00:23:03.150 --> 00:23:07.010
  • or take heart.
  • 00:23:07.020 --> 00:23:08.060
  • The second most common command, to love God and neighbor,
  • 00:23:08.070 --> 00:23:10.270
  • appears on only 8 occasions.
  • 00:23:10.280 --> 00:23:12.190
  • The quantity is an indicator Jesus takes our fears seriously.
  • 00:23:12.200 --> 00:23:18.220
  • The one statement he made more than any other was this:
  • 00:23:18.230 --> 00:23:22.080
  • "Don't be afraid."
  • 00:23:22.090 --> 00:23:25.080
  • Imagine your life untouched by angst.
  • 00:23:25.090 --> 00:23:27.060
  • What if faith, not fear, was your default reaction
  • 00:23:27.070 --> 00:23:29.180
  • to threats?
  • 00:23:29.190 --> 00:23:30.230
  • Envision a day, just one day, absent the dread of failure,
  • 00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:33.240
  • rejection, and calamity.
  • 00:23:33.250 --> 00:23:34.260
  • Can you imagine a life with no fear?
  • 00:23:34.270 --> 00:23:38.100
  • Fear may fill our world, but it doesn't have to fill
  • 00:23:38.110 --> 00:23:41.020
  • your hearts.
  • 00:23:41.030 --> 00:23:43.040
  • It will always knock on your door, just don't invite
  • 00:23:43.050 --> 00:23:45.070
  • it in for dinner.
  • 00:23:45.080 --> 00:23:48.120
  • Let's embolden our heart with a select number of Jesus',
  • 00:23:48.130 --> 00:23:51.010
  • "Do not fear" statements.
  • 00:23:51.020 --> 00:23:52.140
  • The promise of Christ is simple.
  • 00:23:52.150 --> 00:23:54.140
  • We can fear less tomorrow than we can today.
  • 00:23:54.150 --> 00:23:58.240
  • And here in this wonderful passage
  • 00:23:58.250 --> 00:24:00.280
  • is the final word from the Lord to John, who was overwhelmed
  • 00:24:00.290 --> 00:24:04.170
  • by what he saw, "'Fear not, I am the eternal one.
  • 00:24:04.180 --> 00:24:10.150
  • I have overcome the grave, and I hold in my hands death and hell.
  • 00:24:10.160 --> 00:24:16.220
  • And if you know me, if you know me,
  • 00:24:16.230 --> 00:24:20.270
  • you don't have to be afraid.'"

  • in the world and those of the world to come,
  • 00:24:38.150 --> 00:24:41.100
