  • 00:00:10.080 --> 00:00:21.090
  • We're in a series of messages called DESTINY. It's
  • 00:00:21.100 --> 00:00:24.100
  • the story of Joseph. One of the great stories of the Bible. One
  • 00:00:24.110 --> 00:00:29.140
  • of the favorite personalities in all of the Scripture. Maybe you
  • 00:00:29.150 --> 00:00:32.280
  • know him as Joseph and his Technicolor dream coat. He was
  • 00:00:32.290 --> 00:00:37.080
  • given this magnificent mosaic coat that he wore symbolizing
  • 00:00:37.090 --> 00:00:41.030
  • the favor of his father upon his life. God gave this man, even
  • 00:00:41.040 --> 00:00:47.180
  • when he was seventeen years of age... just a teenager like many
  • 00:00:47.190 --> 00:00:51.020
  • of these students here today, God placed some dreams in his
  • 00:00:51.030 --> 00:00:55.130
  • heart. And the story of Joseph is the story of every believer
  • 00:00:55.140 --> 00:01:00.160
  • because all of us have amazing potential for an extraordinary
  • 00:01:00.170 --> 00:01:05.070
  • life. And to discover our God-honoring dreams, the dreams
  • 00:01:05.080 --> 00:01:12.230
  • that God gives us that shape our lives and size our lives. I know
  • 00:01:12.240 --> 00:01:18.160
  • this... and here's this sermon in a sentence. I tell preachers,
  • 00:01:18.170 --> 00:01:23.040
  • "If you can't put your sermon in a sentence, you don't have a
  • 00:01:23.050 --> 00:01:28.090
  • sermon yet." But here's the message in a sentence: What your
  • 00:01:28.100 --> 00:01:30.240
  • life becomes is built upon the dreams that you dream and the
  • 00:01:30.250 --> 00:01:34.020
  • decisions that you make from this day forward. I'm going to
  • 00:01:34.030 --> 00:01:40.250
  • say it again: What your life becomes is built upon the dreams
  • 00:01:40.260 --> 00:01:44.120
  • that you dream and the decisions that that you make from this day
  • 00:01:44.130 --> 00:01:49.220
  • forward. Take your Bibles and turn with me to Genesis, chapter
  • 00:01:49.230 --> 00:01:53.160
  • 37... Genesis, chapter 37. When I've had the opportunity over
  • 00:01:53.170 --> 00:01:59.070
  • the years to ask some successful people what is the secret of
  • 00:01:59.080 --> 00:02:04.280
  • your success, inevitably at the outset, they use words like
  • 00:02:04.290 --> 00:02:10.210
  • vision and mission and purpose and dreams. And God has planted
  • 00:02:10.220 --> 00:02:21.110
  • the seeds of success in all of us. Joseph is described in the
  • 00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:25.130
  • book of Genesis, chapter 39, verse 2 as a successful man.
  • 00:02:25.140 --> 00:02:29.190
  • Why? Because God gave him success. It was obvious even to
  • 00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:34.230
  • pagans that the Lord's hand was upon him; that there was an
  • 00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:38.080
  • extraordinary spirit about him. The dreams that we possess are
  • 00:02:38.090 --> 00:02:43.150
  • not mere pipe dreams or day dreams... superficial dreams,
  • 00:02:43.160 --> 00:02:47.150
  • but... spiritual dreams... supernatural dreams. Not Disney
  • 00:02:47.160 --> 00:02:53.080
  • dreams. You know Cinderella said, "A dream is a wish that
  • 00:02:53.090 --> 00:02:58.190
  • your heart makes." Very nice, but that's not a God given
  • 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:06.090
  • dream. The kind of dream that we discover here in Genesis chapter
  • 00:03:06.100 --> 00:03:11.200
  • 37. 5) Now Joseph had a dream (verse 5), and when he told it
  • 00:03:11.210 --> 00:03:15.230
  • to his brothers they hated him even more. Then again down in
  • 00:03:15.240 --> 00:03:21.070
  • verse 9: 9) Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his
  • 00:03:21.080 --> 00:03:24.000
  • brothers and he said, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream. You
  • 00:03:24.010 --> 00:03:29.190
  • will recall that these dreams concerned Joseph's rise to power
  • 00:03:29.200 --> 00:03:33.130
  • and position; that ultimately his own family... his father and
  • 00:03:33.140 --> 00:03:38.030
  • his brothers would bow down to him. Joseph was given a glimpse
  • 00:03:38.040 --> 00:03:45.150
  • of his own future. And while he couldn't have understood it at
  • 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:50.170
  • this point, he realized that God was doing something...
  • 00:03:50.180 --> 00:03:54.120
  • implanting something in his heart that was absolutely life
  • 00:03:54.130 --> 00:03:58.080
  • changing. Ultimately it was not about Joseph and his rise to
  • 00:03:58.090 --> 00:04:03.140
  • power; it was about God saving a family and God saving a nation.
  • 00:04:03.150 --> 00:04:10.120
  • Dreams that honor God aren't about our egos or our own
  • 00:04:10.130 --> 00:04:16.070
  • ambitions. Dreams that God gives us concern the things that He
  • 00:04:16.080 --> 00:04:22.230
  • cares about. And this is the kind of dream that God gave
  • 00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:27.160
  • Joseph. Later his father, when he heard about the dream... in
  • 00:04:27.170 --> 00:04:32.120
  • verse 10... said: 10) What is this dream that you have
  • 00:04:32.130 --> 00:04:37.250
  • dreamed?" And while that question was in the form of a
  • 00:04:37.260 --> 00:04:43.020
  • rebuke, it's actually a question that all of us should ask and
  • 00:04:43.030 --> 00:04:47.070
  • answer. It...It's the question that I want to ask you today.
  • 00:04:47.080 --> 00:04:53.230
  • What is this dream that you have dreamed? What is the dream that
  • 00:04:53.240 --> 00:05:02.050
  • keeps you awake? What is the dream that drives you forward?
  • 00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:07.090
  • What is the dream? And for some who have dreamed, it's time to
  • 00:05:07.100 --> 00:05:11.050
  • dream again. At mid-life perhaps you've given up on any
  • 00:05:11.060 --> 00:05:16.110
  • possibility or any potential of fulfilling the dreams that have
  • 00:05:16.120 --> 00:05:20.120
  • been in your heart a long time. And maybe you've given up on
  • 00:05:20.130 --> 00:05:23.200
  • your dream for your marriage or given up on your dream for your
  • 00:05:23.210 --> 00:05:27.230
  • children. Whatever your dream is, you can dream it again.
  • 00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:32.110
  • Think about your dream. Is it a dream for... for a long and
  • 00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:36.190
  • healthy life? Or is it a dream for ah... a... a godly marriage
  • 00:05:36.200 --> 00:05:40.240
  • with great children that honor Christ? Is your dream... ah...
  • 00:05:40.250 --> 00:05:44.280
  • ah... a dream of a career that glorifies God? Ah... is your
  • 00:05:44.290 --> 00:05:49.000
  • dream of a ministry in which you give back to the work of Christ
  • 00:05:49.010 --> 00:05:53.000
  • and His church? I... I... Is your dream a ministry of
  • 00:05:53.010 --> 00:05:56.130
  • service? Whatever your dream is, you can find and fulfill the
  • 00:05:56.140 --> 00:06:00.170
  • purpose for which God has made you. And, again, I say, the
  • 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:07.090
  • dreams that you dream and the decisions that you make from
  • 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:11.080
  • this day forward will determine your destiny. If you're not
  • 00:06:11.090 --> 00:06:14.180
  • dreaming, you're dying! And frankly some are no longer
  • 00:06:14.190 --> 00:06:19.280
  • dreaming. You have lowered your expectations in life. When I
  • 00:06:19.290 --> 00:06:24.280
  • first heard Zig Ziglar speak twenty years ago, I remember him
  • 00:06:24.290 --> 00:06:28.240
  • telling a couple of stories: one about an insect, the other about
  • 00:06:28.250 --> 00:06:32.030
  • an elephant. He said that you could take a jar... a small
  • 00:06:32.040 --> 00:06:35.250
  • container, take the lid off of it, put fleas in there and those
  • 00:06:35.260 --> 00:06:39.230
  • fleas would jump out of the jar. They'll jump, jump, jump right
  • 00:06:39.240 --> 00:06:42.120
  • out of the jar. But then you take a lid and put that lid over
  • 00:06:42.130 --> 00:06:48.230
  • the container and those fleas will jump, jump, jump... keep
  • 00:06:48.240 --> 00:06:52.050
  • trying to jump, but once they realize in their little flea
  • 00:06:52.060 --> 00:06:54.280
  • brains that there's a lid on, they settle in on the bottom of
  • 00:06:54.290 --> 00:07:00.260
  • the glass or the container. And even when you take the lid off,
  • 00:07:00.270 --> 00:07:05.000
  • according to Mr. Ziglar, those fleas will just sit there... lay
  • 00:07:05.010 --> 00:07:09.010
  • there until they die because now they have been programmed that a
  • 00:07:09.020 --> 00:07:16.140
  • lid is on their lives and all they can do is sit there and
  • 00:07:16.150 --> 00:07:20.170
  • die. Well, you say, "Well, that's a stupid flea." What
  • 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:23.210
  • about an elephant? Zig tells of circus elephants... You know how
  • 00:07:23.220 --> 00:07:29.240
  • they're trained. You seen these massive elephants with a chain
  • 00:07:29.250 --> 00:07:33.080
  • around their neck or a rope, and they're attached to a pole in
  • 00:07:33.090 --> 00:07:37.140
  • the middle ah... of the arena. And these elephants just walk
  • 00:07:37.150 --> 00:07:42.220
  • around, you know, that pole, just like this, all day long.
  • 00:07:42.230 --> 00:07:46.240
  • They just take a little tap, they're walking around, just
  • 00:07:46.250 --> 00:07:49.170
  • like that. Well, how do you ever get an elephant to do that? You
  • 00:07:49.180 --> 00:07:52.020
  • start when they're little. You get a little baby elephant, you
  • 00:07:52.030 --> 00:07:54.170
  • put a baby elephant... you put a chain around his neck, and train
  • 00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:58.250
  • him to walk around that pole with that chain. And even though
  • 00:07:58.260 --> 00:08:02.070
  • he gets bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and so massive
  • 00:08:02.080 --> 00:08:04.220
  • that it's obvious he could pull that pole right out of the
  • 00:08:04.230 --> 00:08:07.080
  • ground and the chain with it, he doesn't do it. Why? Because he
  • 00:08:07.090 --> 00:08:10.140
  • is programmed now to just walk around in circles. He was made
  • 00:08:10.150 --> 00:08:15.250
  • for the wild but he's now programmed. You know I think a
  • 00:08:15.260 --> 00:08:21.070
  • lot of people start out with a lot of dreams in their lives,
  • 00:08:21.080 --> 00:08:25.120
  • maybe as children you have some dreams about your future. I
  • 00:08:25.130 --> 00:08:30.000
  • think God puts dreams in our lives very early in our
  • 00:08:30.010 --> 00:08:34.000
  • experience in life. I know He did for me. You know I... I...
  • 00:08:34.010 --> 00:08:40.010
  • dreamed of being a baseball player and figured out I wasn't
  • 00:08:40.020 --> 00:08:42.160
  • good enough to do that. I went back to an earlier dream that
  • 00:08:42.170 --> 00:08:47.080
  • God gave me about being a preacher, a pastor. I believe
  • 00:08:47.090 --> 00:08:49.250
  • God put that in my heart when I was just a small boy. And... And
  • 00:08:49.260 --> 00:08:54.160
  • I believe many of us, God gave us some dreams. But we get
  • 00:08:54.170 --> 00:08:59.060
  • programmed. Our dreams get dumbed down. Even if sometimes
  • 00:08:59.070 --> 00:09:04.110
  • in the... in the education systems of... of our day...
  • 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:07.080
  • we... we... we just kind of train people for mediocrity, we
  • 00:09:07.090 --> 00:09:10.280
  • train people for the mundane, but we help them somehow lose
  • 00:09:10.290 --> 00:09:15.000
  • their dreams. One of the things that I pray will happen when...
  • 00:09:15.010 --> 00:09:18.170
  • when kids and students come to Prestonwood is that they will
  • 00:09:18.180 --> 00:09:22.060
  • see and know the great dream and plans that God has for their
  • 00:09:22.070 --> 00:09:26.060
  • lives. If you want to discover your God given dream, first,
  • 00:09:26.070 --> 00:09:31.170
  • understand your uniqueness... the uniqueness of you.
  • 00:09:31.180 --> 00:09:35.080
  • Just as Joseph was favored by his father and given this coat
  • 00:09:35.090 --> 00:09:39.010
  • of many colors, we have been favored by our Father, and we
  • 00:09:39.020 --> 00:09:42.220
  • therefore, stand in the righteousness of Christ... the
  • 00:09:42.230 --> 00:09:45.120
  • cloak of righteousness. And ... and we have been called and
  • 00:09:45.130 --> 00:09:49.210
  • created for this purpose that I've been talking about. And the
  • 00:09:49.220 --> 00:09:52.270
  • Spirit of God lives in us and you are a gifted child. The
  • 00:09:52.280 --> 00:09:56.290
  • Spirit of God has gifted you with spiritual abilities in
  • 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:00.240
  • order to do things for His glory. And you have ah... this
  • 00:10:00.250 --> 00:10:05.150
  • amazing uniqueness.
  • 00:10:05.160 --> 00:10:07.110
  • [Music]
  • 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:16.200
  • As a child of God you are one of a kind, a divine master potter's
  • 00:10:16.210 --> 00:10:22.050
  • original. Before you were born God knew you and formed you even
  • 00:10:22.060 --> 00:10:27.130
  • in your mother's womb and he created you specifically,
  • 00:10:27.140 --> 00:10:31.090
  • personally and purposely with a divine destiny, I like that
  • 00:10:31.100 --> 00:10:36.170
  • word, DESTINY because God has a plan for every life and it's
  • 00:10:36.180 --> 00:10:41.000
  • perfect for you and it's purpose for you is perfect. And that's
  • 00:10:41.010 --> 00:10:45.100
  • why I want to help you discover the plan and purposes of God in
  • 00:10:45.110 --> 00:10:48.180
  • your life by sending you my CD series DESTINY. In this
  • 00:10:48.190 --> 00:10:52.260
  • 10-message series you will be equipped to fulfill God's plan
  • 00:10:52.270 --> 00:10:56.220
  • and purpose for your life. It's based on the amazing and
  • 00:10:56.230 --> 00:11:01.060
  • wonderful story of Joseph. The wisdom we gain from Joseph's
  • 00:11:01.070 --> 00:11:05.020
  • life can help us discover our God-given dream and stand
  • 00:11:05.030 --> 00:11:09.230
  • against temptation and turn our disappointments and adversities
  • 00:11:09.240 --> 00:11:14.000
  • into opportunities to make choices that impact our destiny
  • 00:11:14.010 --> 00:11:17.270
  • to find success and so much more. I love this story of
  • 00:11:17.280 --> 00:11:22.120
  • Joseph and this message series. So, this empowering resource is
  • 00:11:22.130 --> 00:11:26.110
  • our way to say thank you for your gift today to help us get
  • 00:11:26.120 --> 00:11:30.170
  • the gospel, the word of God, the testimony of Jesus to more and
  • 00:11:30.180 --> 00:11:34.080
  • more people through PowerPoint. So, call the number on the
  • 00:11:34.090 --> 00:11:37.220
  • screen or visit us online at JackGraham.org to donate to our
  • 00:11:37.230 --> 00:11:41.000
  • ministry and receive DESTINY today.
  • 00:11:41.010 --> 00:11:47.100
  • Discover your God given
  • 00:11:47.110 --> 00:11:50.030
  • dream! Joe was called a dreamer. And that's because he had these
  • 00:11:50.040 --> 00:12:02.080
  • dreams that were inexplicable and unexplainable. Psalm 34:7
  • 00:12:02.090 --> 00:12:11.010
  • says, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the
  • 00:12:11.020 --> 00:12:16.080
  • desires of your heart." And if you seek God and ask Him, He
  • 00:12:16.090 --> 00:12:26.020
  • will give you a dream... again, for your life, for your family,
  • 00:12:26.030 --> 00:12:31.180
  • for your career, for your ministry, for your well being.
  • 00:12:31.190 --> 00:12:37.060
  • What is your dream? We're not talking here about schemes. A
  • 00:12:37.070 --> 00:12:40.040
  • lot of people have schemes rather than dreams. Have you
  • 00:12:40.050 --> 00:12:45.010
  • noticed that? For example, Jacob was a schemer; Jacob was
  • 00:12:45.020 --> 00:12:49.220
  • Joseph's father. He wasn't a dreamer; he was a schemer. In
  • 00:12:49.230 --> 00:12:55.120
  • fact, his very name Jacob means the cheat or the conniver. I
  • 00:12:55.130 --> 00:13:01.160
  • thought that was pretty cool. I figured out that Jack's name was
  • 00:13:01.170 --> 00:13:04.290
  • a derivative Jacob and I didn't think it was so great.
  • 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:07.090
  • [laughter] But it... it was Jacob who was the conniver and
  • 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:13.020
  • he was constantly trying to manipulate the will of God for
  • 00:13:13.030 --> 00:13:16.210
  • his life. Running from his family, running for his life,
  • 00:13:16.220 --> 00:13:21.080
  • even running from God and every time he tried to run from God,
  • 00:13:21.090 --> 00:13:24.150
  • God chased him down. Have you experienced that? You... you're
  • 00:13:24.160 --> 00:13:27.290
  • trying to live your life in your own way, even running from God,
  • 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:31.240
  • but God chases you down. He chased Jacob down ultimately and
  • 00:13:31.250 --> 00:13:36.080
  • broke him, spiritually as well as physically. And ultimately
  • 00:13:36.090 --> 00:13:41.120
  • Jacob it's said worshipped God leaning on His staff. He learned
  • 00:13:41.130 --> 00:13:45.240
  • how to lean on God. But Jacob spent most of his life, you
  • 00:13:45.250 --> 00:13:51.280
  • know, like a lot of people do, you know, what's the latest get
  • 00:13:51.290 --> 00:13:53.230
  • rich quick scheme? What's the later... latest easy way to
  • 00:13:53.240 --> 00:13:57.140
  • success? And... and how can my life be comfortable? Or running
  • 00:13:57.150 --> 00:14:01.180
  • from God and God's purpose for your life. That's scheming your
  • 00:14:01.190 --> 00:14:05.010
  • way through life. But Joseph is a dreamer. There was a different
  • 00:14:05.020 --> 00:14:12.190
  • spirit in him. This is why he became a successful man... when
  • 00:14:12.200 --> 00:14:21.160
  • your dreams see the invisible and attempt the impossible! I
  • 00:14:21.170 --> 00:14:26.250
  • like what ah... Leroy Eims, a wonderful Christian leader said
  • 00:14:26.260 --> 00:14:30.130
  • about this. He said: "A leader is one who sees more than others
  • 00:14:30.140 --> 00:14:35.090
  • see. He sees farther than others see, and he sees before others
  • 00:14:35.100 --> 00:14:42.250
  • do." Good quote. When I was a young man I wrote in my Bible
  • 00:14:42.260 --> 00:14:50.240
  • these words: "You never test the resources of God until you
  • 00:14:50.250 --> 00:14:59.170
  • attempt the impossible." F. B. Meyer. What I wrote in my Bible
  • 00:14:59.180 --> 00:15:07.120
  • so long ago is now written in my heart. To test God and trust God
  • 00:15:07.130 --> 00:15:14.020
  • with the dreams that He places in our hearts; the desires in
  • 00:15:14.030 --> 00:15:18.040
  • our hearts. And we're told that if we do delight ourselves in
  • 00:15:18.050 --> 00:15:21.120
  • God and trust in God, then He will give us and plant in us the
  • 00:15:21.130 --> 00:15:27.200
  • ideas... the dreams. Remember a dream is the mental picture...
  • 00:15:27.210 --> 00:15:30.150
  • God's picture of your life. Ultimately it's to be like
  • 00:15:30.160 --> 00:15:33.250
  • Christ... to be formed into the image of Christ. Along the way
  • 00:15:33.260 --> 00:15:38.110
  • God gives us this dream. Now it's important to have goals.
  • 00:15:38.120 --> 00:15:41.050
  • It's important to have strategies, but before any of
  • 00:15:41.060 --> 00:15:45.080
  • this can be fulfilled, you must have a dream. Dream... dream a
  • 00:15:45.090 --> 00:15:53.290
  • big dream, because you have a great God who can do more than
  • 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:58.180
  • you can possibly imagine in your life. God's dream
  • 00:15:58.190 --> 00:16:03.000
  • is bigger and better than your own dreams. And remember this,
  • 00:16:03.010 --> 00:16:10.240
  • God's dreams are the things that God cares about. If God's going
  • 00:16:10.250 --> 00:16:17.230
  • to put a dream in your heart, mine as a believer, it's going
  • 00:16:17.240 --> 00:16:21.210
  • to be a dream concerning something He really cares about.
  • 00:16:21.220 --> 00:16:28.220
  • Not about my ego or my ambition or my achievement, but about
  • 00:16:28.230 --> 00:16:33.150
  • advancing the work of God on earth. That's why I say we are
  • 00:16:33.160 --> 00:16:41.260
  • created for Him and by Him, made with a mission. So when you look
  • 00:16:41.270 --> 00:16:49.130
  • around and wonder what is my dream, a dream can be healing a
  • 00:16:49.140 --> 00:16:52.240
  • hurt. A dream can be lifting a life. A dream would be about
  • 00:16:52.250 --> 00:17:01.240
  • answering a question or solving some problem. A dream is about
  • 00:17:01.250 --> 00:17:07.090
  • helping others achieve their dreams. Ah... we're here today
  • 00:17:07.100 --> 00:17:14.090
  • because some people dreamed a great dream regarding this
  • 00:17:14.100 --> 00:17:19.050
  • church and we're sharing in the dreams of others who dreamed
  • 00:17:19.060 --> 00:17:24.260
  • dreams that were given by God. Ultimately it's because Jesus
  • 00:17:24.270 --> 00:17:31.190
  • had a desire to build our church and His church on earth. And we
  • 00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:36.290
  • get to be a part of that dream. There is a part we play, you
  • 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:41.230
  • know, in dreaming these great dreams. And in Ephesians 2,
  • 00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:48.260
  • verses 8 and 9 we're told, "For by grace are you saved through
  • 00:17:48.270 --> 00:17:53.080
  • faith..." All right... listen up... Gospel message coming.
  • 00:17:53.090 --> 00:17:58.290
  • "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of
  • 00:17:59.000 --> 00:18:02.150
  • yourself: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest anyone should
  • 00:18:02.160 --> 00:18:07.220
  • boast." Salvation is not me doing my best; it's God doing
  • 00:18:07.230 --> 00:18:14.020
  • His best. What He did for us at the cross; He died, He rose
  • 00:18:14.030 --> 00:18:17.170
  • again, and then He by grace... His favor offers us salvation
  • 00:18:17.180 --> 00:18:21.280
  • and we respond by faith. In a moment I'm going to give an
  • 00:18:21.290 --> 00:18:27.020
  • invitation and invite you to respond to the Lord Jesus
  • 00:18:27.030 --> 00:18:30.030
  • Christ. But verse 10 then tells us our part. Verse 10 says, "For
  • 00:18:30.040 --> 00:18:35.050
  • we are His workmanship, created in Jesus Christ unto good
  • 00:18:35.060 --> 00:18:41.000
  • works." God is shaping us; God is sizing us. God is molding and
  • 00:18:41.010 --> 00:18:48.020
  • making our dreams, our lives, and we are a part of it because
  • 00:18:48.030 --> 00:18:53.080
  • we are created "unto good works." So when God gives you a
  • 00:18:53.090 --> 00:18:59.100
  • dream, it's a matter of just sitting around and waiting for
  • 00:18:59.110 --> 00:19:02.030
  • something to happen. No, it is investing your life and... and
  • 00:19:02.040 --> 00:19:07.170
  • letting God fill you and use you. Never stop dreaming. Paul
  • 00:19:07.180 --> 00:19:13.090
  • didn't. The greatest Christian who ever lived in my view, the
  • 00:19:13.100 --> 00:19:19.000
  • Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:14, "I press on towards the
  • 00:19:19.010 --> 00:19:23.180
  • mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ!"
  • 00:19:23.190 --> 00:19:28.010
  • I know I haven't arrived! I know I'm not there yet! That is why I
  • 00:19:28.020 --> 00:19:33.000
  • press on! Press on in your spiritual walk, in your
  • 00:19:33.010 --> 00:19:36.260
  • families, in your careers, in your relationship, in your
  • 00:19:36.270 --> 00:19:39.110
  • ministry! Don't be satisfied by being satisfied. Don't be
  • 00:19:39.120 --> 00:19:43.270
  • satisfied with a... with an average Christian life! Don't be
  • 00:19:43.280 --> 00:19:47.040
  • satisfied with an average marriage. Don't be satisfied
  • 00:19:47.050 --> 00:19:50.180
  • with a... with a... with an average ah... ah... child or an
  • 00:19:50.190 --> 00:19:55.040
  • average parenting experience! Don't be satisfied with... with
  • 00:19:55.050 --> 00:19:58.130
  • mediocrity in any area of your life! You are unique before God;
  • 00:19:58.140 --> 00:20:04.020
  • called and favored by the Father! And God gives you a
  • 00:20:04.030 --> 00:20:07.280
  • dream as surely as He gives Joseph a dream! There's one
  • 00:20:07.290 --> 00:20:12.150
  • final thing: anticipate adversity. Now we're going to
  • 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:18.050
  • talk a lot about this in coming weeks and Joseph's experience
  • 00:20:18.060 --> 00:20:21.050
  • because he was on a collision course with destiny. And he
  • 00:20:21.060 --> 00:20:25.210
  • faced... he faced extreme emergencies of faith along the
  • 00:20:25.220 --> 00:20:29.260
  • way. Truly a remarkable story that God... God gave him these
  • 00:20:29.270 --> 00:20:40.150
  • dreams, and these dreams gave him a lot of headaches because
  • 00:20:40.160 --> 00:20:45.270
  • God was shaping him and shaping his dreams. If you read the
  • 00:20:45.280 --> 00:20:50.220
  • story here in the thirty-seventh chapter, Joseph... it's obvious
  • 00:20:50.230 --> 00:20:55.090
  • he's young, he's immature, he's walking around in his brand new
  • 00:20:55.100 --> 00:20:59.070
  • jacket. He's sort of in the face of his brothers. There's a lot
  • 00:20:59.080 --> 00:21:04.280
  • of arrogance here God had to deal with in his life, and
  • 00:21:04.290 --> 00:21:11.250
  • brought him to humility and brought him to a place where He
  • 00:21:11.260 --> 00:21:15.080
  • could really use him. You can't even begin to live the dream God
  • 00:21:15.090 --> 00:21:17.160
  • has for you until you stop caring only about yourself. And
  • 00:21:17.170 --> 00:21:22.100
  • Joseph had a lot of self in this until God shaped the dream. But
  • 00:21:22.110 --> 00:21:30.070
  • opposition comes... adversity comes when we have great dreams.
  • 00:21:30.080 --> 00:21:33.270
  • Comes in many forms: loneliness, opposition. You know it was said
  • 00:21:33.280 --> 00:21:38.130
  • of Walt Disney that when Disney presented an idea to his board
  • 00:21:38.140 --> 00:21:44.200
  • or to his... his creative ah... team that unless he found
  • 00:21:44.210 --> 00:21:49.250
  • opposition to his idea he would not go forward. He'd scrap the
  • 00:21:49.260 --> 00:21:53.220
  • whole thing unless there was some kind of opposition because
  • 00:21:53.230 --> 00:21:59.020
  • he figured his dream was too small and his idea was too
  • 00:21:59.030 --> 00:22:01.050
  • unimaginative. Always we will find ah... those who want to
  • 00:22:01.060 --> 00:22:06.280
  • destroy our dreams! Fatigue! You give up. You get tired and you
  • 00:22:06.290 --> 00:22:14.070
  • quit. But I guess criticism is one of the areas which we find
  • 00:22:14.080 --> 00:22:20.070
  • ourselves giving up the most. These brothers sharply
  • 00:22:20.080 --> 00:22:26.040
  • criticized Joseph. His own father didn't affirm him on his
  • 00:22:26.050 --> 00:22:33.080
  • dream. And he could have easily given up. Ultimately people
  • 00:22:33.090 --> 00:22:36.020
  • forgot him in prison, people tempted him and tested him in
  • 00:22:36.030 --> 00:22:38.080
  • all kinds of ways, all this... all of this crisis and collision
  • 00:22:38.090 --> 00:22:41.220
  • in his life. But he kept dreaming. And when you have
  • 00:22:41.230 --> 00:22:47.160
  • adversity in your life, know that that's God shaping you. He
  • 00:22:47.170 --> 00:22:52.240
  • hasn't given up on the dream of your life, He hasn't quit on
  • 00:22:52.250 --> 00:22:56.030
  • you. He's working on you, for [Romans 8:28] "we know that all
  • 00:22:56.040 --> 00:22:59.240
  • things are working together for the good of them that love the
  • 00:22:59.250 --> 00:23:03.120
  • Lord, and are called according to His purpose." In Joseph's
  • 00:23:03.130 --> 00:23:05.190
  • story is the 8-28, Romans 8:28 of the Scriptures! That God is
  • 00:23:05.200 --> 00:23:11.080
  • doing all of this behind the scenes. But sometimes criticism
  • 00:23:11.090 --> 00:23:15.040
  • can hurt. I heard about a couple walking into a... ah... a pet
  • 00:23:15.050 --> 00:23:20.100
  • store. [They] Walked in the pet store and there was a parrot
  • 00:23:20.110 --> 00:23:23.140
  • sitting there on his perch and when the couple walked by, the
  • 00:23:23.150 --> 00:23:26.210
  • parrot said, "Hey, you!" Man looked around. He said, "Me?"
  • 00:23:26.220 --> 00:23:32.200
  • [He] Said, "Yeah, you!" He said, "What?" [The] Parrot said,
  • 00:23:32.210 --> 00:23:38.080
  • "You're stupid and your wife's ugly!" [laughter] "What did you
  • 00:23:38.090 --> 00:23:42.250
  • say?" "Yeah, you're stupid and your wife's ugly!" Well his
  • 00:23:42.260 --> 00:23:48.090
  • wife's in tears. He's extremely angry! He walks into the manager
  • 00:23:48.100 --> 00:23:52.260
  • of the pet store, and said, "You know what your parrot just said
  • 00:23:52.270 --> 00:23:56.050
  • to me out there... that dirty bird said to me!" He said,
  • 00:23:56.060 --> 00:24:00.210
  • "What?" "He said that I was stupid and my wife was ugly!"
  • 00:24:00.220 --> 00:24:04.080
  • The manager said, "I can't believe he's doing that again!"
  • 00:24:04.090 --> 00:24:08.060
  • He goes out there, he grabs the parrot by the neck, he shakes
  • 00:24:08.070 --> 00:24:11.190
  • his tail feathers real good, slaps him around a little bit
  • 00:24:11.200 --> 00:24:14.120
  • and says, "If you ever say anything like that to one of our
  • 00:24:14.130 --> 00:24:17.080
  • customers again, that'll be the last thing you ever say!" And he
  • 00:24:17.090 --> 00:24:20.220
  • put him back on his perch. Well, the couple was satisfied that
  • 00:24:20.230 --> 00:24:24.290
  • the bird was duly disciplined, so they... they leave the store.
  • 00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:28.220
  • And as the man and woman are walking out the store, the bird
  • 00:24:28.230 --> 00:24:31.180
  • sitting there, said, "Hey you!" [The] Man turns and says,
  • 00:24:31.190 --> 00:24:39.110
  • "What?" "Yooou know." [extended laughter] You know our problem
  • 00:24:39.120 --> 00:24:49.130
  • "What?" "Yooou know." [extended laughter] You know our problem
  • 00:24:49.130 --> 00:24:56.020
  • so often we're listening to parrots just repeating what
  • 00:24:56.030 --> 00:24:59.130
  • others say! An... an... an... and... and all of us can think
  • 00:24:59.140 --> 00:25:03.040
  • about stuff that's been said to us along the way, that in a few
  • 00:25:03.050 --> 00:25:08.040
  • instances have really kept us from fulfilling God's best in
  • 00:25:08.050 --> 00:25:12.040
  • our lives. Sort of like that preacher... he was visiting
  • 00:25:12.050 --> 00:25:15.030
  • country churches, preaching from here and there and everywhere.
  • 00:25:15.040 --> 00:25:17.170
  • And he was at this particular church, and he thought he gave a
  • 00:25:17.180 --> 00:25:20.060
  • good message. And ah... he's standing there shaking people's
  • 00:25:20.070 --> 00:25:23.200
  • hands as they're leaving, and people being complimentary. But
  • 00:25:23.210 --> 00:25:26.150
  • there's this one guy walks by and he says, "That was the worst
  • 00:25:26.160 --> 00:25:30.000
  • sermon I ever heard!" Ah... Well, he took that and said,
  • 00:25:30.010 --> 00:25:32.280
  • "Well, I appreciate that." The man went on, shakes some more
  • 00:25:32.290 --> 00:25:35.200
  • hands. Same guy gets in line again... comes back through.
  • 00:25:35.210 --> 00:25:38.120
  • [laughter] He said, "Not only was it long, it was boring!" And
  • 00:25:38.130 --> 00:25:44.290
  • he said, "Well,..." The guy gets in line again. He comes back
  • 00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:48.190
  • through! He says, "People's..." No, he said, "Nobody wants you
  • 00:25:48.200 --> 00:25:52.230
  • back again." Man, this guy's just crushed. And one of the
  • 00:25:52.240 --> 00:25:57.100
  • deacons of the church walked up to him and said, "Friend, don't
  • 00:25:57.110 --> 00:26:00.290
  • pay any attention to that guy. That guy's really... he's not
  • 00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:04.280
  • right. He just walks around repeating what everybody else is
  • 00:26:04.290 --> 00:26:07.220
  • saying." [extended laughter]
  • 00:26:07.230 --> 00:26:14.070
  • Well, there are the dream makers and there are the dream takers!
  • 00:26:14.080 --> 00:26:22.210
  • Don't let anybody take your
  • 00:26:22.220 --> 00:26:24.120
  • dream from you; "Remember Your word to Your servant in which
  • 00:26:24.130 --> 00:26:28.250
  • You made me hope." Sometimes when you have a dream from God,
  • 00:26:28.260 --> 00:26:33.240
  • you need to go back to the promise that God has given you.
  • 00:26:33.250 --> 00:26:39.140
  • In spite of the circumstances, crisis, adversity, you go back
  • 00:26:39.150 --> 00:26:43.120
  • and say, "Lord, remember Your word that You have given to Your
  • 00:26:43.130 --> 00:26:48.260
  • servants." And this is our hope, and this is our strength, and
  • 00:26:48.270 --> 00:26:57.170
  • this is our dream, that He will fill this house... this house...
  • 00:26:57.180 --> 00:27:01.020
  • you and me, for we are the temple of God, and this house...
  • 00:27:01.030 --> 00:27:05.070
  • His church... with his glory, and in the latter days they will
  • 00:27:05.080 --> 00:27:11.050
  • be greater than in the former days. The best is yet. So don't
  • 00:27:11.060 --> 00:27:18.140
  • die with your dreams still in you. Don't stand before God with
  • 00:27:18.150 --> 00:27:23.230
  • regrets for what your life might have been... could have been.
  • 00:27:23.240 --> 00:27:28.030
  • What you may have done for God or for your family or your
  • 00:27:28.040 --> 00:27:31.020
  • children. Keep dreaming! Keeping stretching your faith! Keep
  • 00:27:31.030 --> 00:27:37.180
  • expecting great things from God and your life will turn out far
  • 00:27:37.190 --> 00:27:42.240
  • more incredible than you ever dreamed possible!
  • 00:27:42.250 --> 00:27:47.250
  • [Music]
  • 00:27:47.260 --> 00:27:56.000
  • God has a plan
  • 00:27:56.010 --> 00:27:57.100
  • for your life, it is a perfect plan, it is his will for your
  • 00:27:57.110 --> 00:27:59.280
  • life. The question is, will you trust Him and enjoy the ride or
  • 00:27:59.290 --> 00:28:05.240
  • resist Him and live in fear? When you say... really from your
  • 00:28:05.250 --> 00:28:12.020
  • heart... as the old hymn says, "have thine own way Lord, have
  • 00:28:12.030 --> 00:28:14.200
  • thine own way." You will discover His way is full of joy
  • 00:28:14.210 --> 00:28:18.020
  • and peace, more joy and peace than you could have possibly
  • 00:28:18.030 --> 00:28:21.130
  • imagined.
  • 00:28:21.140 --> 00:28:22.140
