  • [Music]
  • 00:00:10.280 --> 00:00:21.010
  • Take your Bibles and turn with me now to the
  • 00:00:21.020 --> 00:00:23.110
  • thirty-seventh chapter of the book of Genesis. We are telling
  • 00:00:23.120 --> 00:00:26.250
  • the story of Joseph right out of the Scriptures... this wonderful
  • 00:00:26.260 --> 00:00:31.120
  • man, God said, a successful man. Why? Because the hand of the
  • 00:00:31.130 --> 00:00:36.150
  • Lord was on him and, therefore, God gave him great success. The
  • 00:00:36.160 --> 00:00:43.050
  • secret of his success... the dreams that God placed in his
  • 00:00:43.060 --> 00:00:46.230
  • heart. And in these dreams he fulfilled a destiny... the
  • 00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:53.230
  • destiny that God had given him. The fact is every child of God
  • 00:00:53.240 --> 00:00:59.250
  • favored by the Father, just like you, God is giving you dreams
  • 00:00:59.260 --> 00:01:05.080
  • for your future, for your family, for your ministry, for
  • 00:01:05.090 --> 00:01:09.290
  • your life, for your career. God gives us dreams today and if His
  • 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.190
  • hand is upon us... if we stay under the mighty hand of our God
  • 00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:19.290
  • then we know that those dreams will become our destiny. We have
  • 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.290
  • the uniqueness; just as Joseph was given a coat of many colors,
  • 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:28.240
  • describing his uniqueness and his favor from the father, we
  • 00:01:28.250 --> 00:01:32.130
  • also are favored. And just as that coat was a patchwork kind
  • 00:01:32.140 --> 00:01:38.000
  • of quilt, a mosaic, if you will, it's really a picture of
  • 00:01:38.010 --> 00:01:42.110
  • Joseph's dreams and our dreams and how God weaves and works
  • 00:01:42.120 --> 00:01:46.190
  • together all things to this beautiful, colorful ah... life
  • 00:01:46.200 --> 00:01:51.230
  • that He has given us. And Joseph had this marvelous coat, and he
  • 00:01:51.240 --> 00:01:56.180
  • had these great dreams. And you would suppose it would be clear
  • 00:01:56.190 --> 00:02:01.010
  • sailing. And yet we discover that his dreams nearly died.
  • 00:02:01.020 --> 00:02:09.060
  • They almost died in a pit when he was sold by his brothers and
  • 00:02:09.070 --> 00:02:14.220
  • even before that, left for dead in a pit that seemed to be so
  • 00:02:14.230 --> 00:02:19.270
  • deep that his dreams would not survive. You know the Christian
  • 00:02:19.280 --> 00:02:24.170
  • life is positive; it is hopeful. We live in confidence and in
  • 00:02:24.180 --> 00:02:32.060
  • certainty. And yet it is not without tests, it is not without
  • 00:02:32.070 --> 00:02:38.060
  • trials. And our dreams can face distress and difficulty and
  • 00:02:38.070 --> 00:02:44.280
  • darkness. There will be times in your life that the bottom falls
  • 00:02:44.290 --> 00:02:48.280
  • out and you will wonder why, and ask what happened. Joseph was
  • 00:02:48.290 --> 00:02:55.150
  • this remarkable man and yet... and yet he had a collision
  • 00:02:55.160 --> 00:03:01.020
  • course on his way to his destiny... a crash on his way to
  • 00:03:01.030 --> 00:03:07.000
  • destiny. Verse 23. This is after Joseph went to see his brothers
  • 00:03:07.010 --> 00:03:11.200
  • on an errand for his father. His brothers saw him, hated him;
  • 00:03:11.210 --> 00:03:16.030
  • threw him in a deep well... a cistern where many died. Even in
  • 00:03:16.040 --> 00:03:20.030
  • the ancient world today we're uncovering with archeology these
  • 00:03:20.040 --> 00:03:24.020
  • kinds of cisterns or wells ah... with human remains... skeletons
  • 00:03:24.030 --> 00:03:28.190
  • there. So we know many died. Some were devoured by animals.
  • 00:03:28.200 --> 00:03:32.220
  • His brothers who despised his dreams and hated him... when
  • 00:03:32.230 --> 00:03:37.180
  • they saw the dreamer coming, they said, "Let's throw him in
  • 00:03:37.190 --> 00:03:40.110
  • and kill him." So they took away his coat... stripped him of the
  • 00:03:40.120 --> 00:03:45.150
  • coat of many colors, threw him in ah... to this pit. But then
  • 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:50.040
  • notice what happened in verse 23: 23) So when Joseph came to
  • 00:03:50.050 --> 00:03:53.100
  • his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, and... the robe of
  • 00:03:53.110 --> 00:03:56.070
  • many colors that he wore. 24) And they took him and cast him
  • 00:03:56.080 --> 00:03:59.090
  • into a pit. And the pit was empty and there was no water in
  • 00:03:59.100 --> 00:04:03.010
  • it. 25) And then they sat down to eat. And looking up they saw
  • 00:04:03.020 --> 00:04:07.120
  • a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels
  • 00:04:07.130 --> 00:04:11.180
  • bearing gum, balm, and myrrh, on their way to carry it down to
  • 00:04:11.190 --> 00:04:14.270
  • Egypt. 26) Then Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it
  • 00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:18.250
  • if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27) Come, let
  • 00:04:18.260 --> 00:04:23.130
  • us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon
  • 00:04:23.140 --> 00:04:27.000
  • him, for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers
  • 00:04:27.010 --> 00:04:31.290
  • listened to him. 28) And then Midianite traders passed by. And
  • 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:36.180
  • they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him
  • 00:04:36.190 --> 00:04:41.030
  • to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took
  • 00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:46.150
  • Joseph to Egypt. What a terrible turn... twist of events in
  • 00:04:46.160 --> 00:04:52.210
  • Joseph's life! Left for dead and then sold as a slave! Satan must
  • 00:04:52.220 --> 00:05:04.250
  • have been whispering in Joseph's ears "What about your dreams
  • 00:05:04.260 --> 00:05:09.140
  • now?" "Where's your God now?" "If there is a God, He must not
  • 00:05:09.150 --> 00:05:18.060
  • love you all that much." And yet Joseph persevered; Joseph
  • 00:05:18.070 --> 00:05:25.130
  • pressed on. And he learned some things there in the pit and
  • 00:05:25.140 --> 00:05:30.020
  • beyond the pit that would ultimately put him in the place
  • 00:05:30.030 --> 00:05:34.150
  • that God had planned... the pinnacle of power in Egypt. I
  • 00:05:34.160 --> 00:05:40.080
  • want to give you four lessons learned in the pit, and I
  • 00:05:40.090 --> 00:05:44.280
  • believe that it's so important that we learn these lessons.
  • 00:05:44.290 --> 00:05:48.150
  • Have you ever noticed that we often train people for success
  • 00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:53.030
  • but we rarely train people for failure. That's really backwards
  • 00:05:53.040 --> 00:05:57.240
  • because there's more failure in life than success. And there's a
  • 00:05:57.250 --> 00:06:01.280
  • great deal of failure on the way to success. So I can't answer
  • 00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:07.110
  • many of the questions that we have... the why questions of
  • 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:10.160
  • life, but I can help prepare you from God's word and train you
  • 00:06:10.170 --> 00:06:16.090
  • for the testing times of life which will come to all of us. If
  • 00:06:16.100 --> 00:06:20.120
  • you have a dream, I guarantee you your dream will be
  • 00:06:20.130 --> 00:06:23.110
  • challenged. I see Dr. Cooper here this morning. When ah... he
  • 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:28.230
  • was 37 years of old, I believe yea He was... wanted to be an
  • 00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:33.000
  • astronaut ultimately... I was just re-reading his story. He
  • 00:06:33.010 --> 00:06:36.250
  • wanted to be an astronaut, raised in Oklahoma. Ah... Got
  • 00:06:36.260 --> 00:06:40.130
  • into the Air Force with the intent of being an astronaut,
  • 00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:42.190
  • that was his first dream, but then God gave him another dream
  • 00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:45.150
  • and that was the dream of preventative medicine. And ah...
  • 00:06:45.160 --> 00:06:49.160
  • as a result of that he developed a... a plan for prevention ah...
  • 00:06:49.170 --> 00:06:54.020
  • that primarily at that point in his career included exercise and
  • 00:06:54.030 --> 00:06:57.060
  • getting people moving. And he wrote Aerobics. It was publish
  • 00:06:57.070 --> 00:07:00.240
  • forty years ago. And he became, therefore, the progenitor, the
  • 00:07:00.250 --> 00:07:05.060
  • father of Aerobics. And we've been on the trails exercising. A
  • 00:07:05.070 --> 00:07:09.270
  • man really changed the world in many ways because of a dream God
  • 00:07:09.280 --> 00:07:13.150
  • had for him. But it might surprise you... in the early
  • 00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:16.060
  • days not many people accepted his evaluation and the need for
  • 00:07:16.070 --> 00:07:20.290
  • exercise. I mean we take it for granted today. Most all of us
  • 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:24.040
  • know that you need to get moving if you're going to stay
  • 00:07:24.050 --> 00:07:26.170
  • healthier. And ah... yet in those days the idea was if you
  • 00:07:26.180 --> 00:07:30.050
  • were sick, go to bed. You know, if you had a heart condition
  • 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:33.160
  • don't exercise; you might kill yourself. And so when Dr. Cooper
  • 00:07:33.170 --> 00:07:37.090
  • moved to Dallas he set up a little office and... And the
  • 00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:40.200
  • medical examiners or some board ah... got after him because they
  • 00:07:40.210 --> 00:07:44.110
  • thought, "you're going to kill people putting them on those
  • 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:46.140
  • treadmills and... and testing them like that" and so on. And
  • 00:07:46.150 --> 00:07:50.030
  • others came against him. You know when you have a dream count
  • 00:07:50.040 --> 00:07:53.030
  • on the fact that some who don't share your dream will fight you
  • 00:07:53.040 --> 00:08:00.090
  • and resist you! So what do you do when that happens? Number
  • 00:08:00.100 --> 00:08:05.170
  • one, remember God is in control! Therefore, don't demand to
  • 00:08:05.180 --> 00:08:12.290
  • understand. Even if you could understand, it probably wouldn't
  • 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:18.290
  • help you all that much this side of heaven. Please, don't get the
  • 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:24.160
  • idea that there won't be struggles in life or sufferings
  • 00:08:24.170 --> 00:08:27.090
  • in life. In spite of what we may hear from some pulpits today,
  • 00:08:27.100 --> 00:08:31.220
  • it's not all sweetness and likeness and light. There are
  • 00:08:31.230 --> 00:08:36.240
  • hard challenges in life that we all must face. And when these
  • 00:08:36.250 --> 00:08:41.050
  • things happen... it could be a financial crash, ah... it could
  • 00:08:41.060 --> 00:08:45.050
  • be a marital crisis in your life, ah... a problem with your
  • 00:08:45.060 --> 00:08:49.010
  • children. It could be that ah... you could have a spiritual
  • 00:08:49.020 --> 00:08:52.180
  • crisis going on... ah... crisis of doubt, or identity...
  • 00:08:52.190 --> 00:08:55.210
  • whatever it may be. When you have a crisis it's not time
  • 00:08:55.220 --> 00:08:59.120
  • to... to so much demand to understand, but to trust in the
  • 00:08:59.130 --> 00:09:04.140
  • plans of God for your life. When you have these dreams and they
  • 00:09:04.150 --> 00:09:08.240
  • turn to disasters or your dreams turn to nightmares... Again, I
  • 00:09:08.250 --> 00:09:13.220
  • can't answer your why questions, but I can point you to a God who
  • 00:09:13.230 --> 00:09:18.190
  • is in control always of your life! And just because things
  • 00:09:18.200 --> 00:09:24.010
  • don't make sense now doesn't mean they won't make sense. I'm
  • 00:09:24.020 --> 00:09:28.150
  • certain that when we get to heaven one of the common
  • 00:09:28.160 --> 00:09:30.240
  • expressions we're going to hear in heaven is "Ah-ha! [light
  • 00:09:30.250 --> 00:09:37.040
  • laughter] That's why that happened! That's the reason for
  • 00:09:37.050 --> 00:09:44.100
  • that pain! This is why I experienced that heartache! God
  • 00:09:44.110 --> 00:09:52.150
  • was in control and working in my life all along." Just because
  • 00:09:52.160 --> 00:09:58.170
  • you don't understand doesn't mean you will never understand.
  • 00:09:58.180 --> 00:10:02.140
  • By faith we see, but ultimate we will see by sight... we will
  • 00:10:02.150 --> 00:10:07.110
  • know. The old song says, "We will understand it better by and
  • 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:11.080
  • by." The prophet Isaiah said, chapter 55 of Isaiah [Isaiah
  • 00:10:11.090 --> 00:10:16.260
  • 55:8-9], "For My thoughts are not your thoughts (God
  • 00:10:16.270 --> 00:10:20.250
  • speaking), nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the
  • 00:10:20.260 --> 00:10:23.020
  • heavens are higher than the earth so are My ways higher than
  • 00:10:23.030 --> 00:10:26.110
  • your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." So if you're in
  • 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:31.150
  • a big old pit... anybody here in a big old pit today? You're in
  • 00:10:31.160 --> 00:10:36.090
  • the pits! Remember, God is in control! You should prepare for
  • 00:10:36.100 --> 00:10:44.180
  • crisis and loss and failure in life because life is tough.
  • 00:10:44.190 --> 00:10:49.200
  • Jesus said [John 16:33], "In this world you will have
  • 00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:54.010
  • tribulation. But be of good cheer; I've overcome the world."
  • 00:10:54.020 --> 00:10:56.240
  • So when we face one of these crisis times in life, as all of
  • 00:10:56.250 --> 00:10:59.280
  • us have and will, that's not the time to panic; it's not the time
  • 00:10:59.290 --> 00:11:04.060
  • to despair; it's not the time to freak out and run away! That's
  • 00:11:04.070 --> 00:11:08.080
  • the time that we can rise to the challenge and overcome every
  • 00:11:08.090 --> 00:11:13.130
  • obstacle because we know that God has a plan, that He is in
  • 00:11:13.140 --> 00:11:18.050
  • control of our lives! It is so true. His ways are not our ways.
  • 00:11:18.060 --> 00:11:24.240
  • And one day when we do see clearly what this all about,
  • 00:11:24.250 --> 00:11:28.120
  • we'll thank God even for the times we hurt, the times that we
  • 00:11:28.130 --> 00:11:33.080
  • crashed, the times that we were in those pits. In the meantime
  • 00:11:33.090 --> 00:11:37.270
  • trust God: God knows what He's doing. He is ordering your steps
  • 00:11:37.280 --> 00:11:42.030
  • and orchestrating your life.
  • 00:11:42.040 --> 00:11:44.030
  • [Music]
  • 00:11:44.040 --> 00:11:51.080
  • As a child of God you
  • 00:11:51.090 --> 00:11:54.250
  • are one of a kind, a divine master potter's original. Before
  • 00:11:54.260 --> 00:12:00.130
  • you were born God knew you and formed you even in your mother's
  • 00:12:00.140 --> 00:12:04.120
  • womb and he created you specifically, personally and
  • 00:12:04.130 --> 00:12:09.020
  • purposely with a divine destiny, I like that word, DESTINY
  • 00:12:09.030 --> 00:12:14.180
  • because God has a plan for every life and it's perfect for you
  • 00:12:14.190 --> 00:12:18.150
  • and it's purpose for you is perfect. And that's why I want
  • 00:12:18.160 --> 00:12:22.160
  • to help you discover the plan and purposes of God in your life
  • 00:12:22.170 --> 00:12:26.000
  • by sending you my CD series DESTINY. In this 10-message
  • 00:12:26.010 --> 00:12:30.020
  • series you will be equipped to fulfill God's plan and purpose
  • 00:12:30.030 --> 00:12:34.030
  • for your life. It's based on the amazing and wonderful story of
  • 00:12:34.040 --> 00:12:39.020
  • Joseph. The wisdom we gain from Joseph's life can help us
  • 00:12:39.030 --> 00:12:44.000
  • discover our God-given dream and stand against temptation and
  • 00:12:44.010 --> 00:12:47.270
  • turn our disappointments and adversities into opportunities
  • 00:12:47.280 --> 00:12:51.140
  • to make choices that impact our destiny to find success and so

  • 00:13:16.280 --> 00:13:20.000
  • today.
  • 00:13:20.010 --> 00:13:23.280
  • The second thing is remain faithful no matter the
  • 00:13:23.290 --> 00:13:27.080
  • cost. That's what Joseph did. Notice what happened when
  • 00:13:27.090 --> 00:13:31.080
  • Joseph, sent to Egypt and sold to Egypt as a slave, began
  • 00:13:31.090 --> 00:13:35.050
  • working in Egypt. Chapter 39... look at the first several verses
  • 00:13:35.060 --> 00:13:39.010
  • of chapter 39 in Genesis: 1) Now Joseph had been brought down to
  • 00:13:39.020 --> 00:13:43.190
  • Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the
  • 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.180
  • guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had
  • 00:13:47.190 --> 00:13:50.230
  • brought him down there. 2) And the Lord was with Joseph (love
  • 00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:55.060
  • this... I love this sentence)... the Lord was with Joseph and he
  • 00:13:55.070 --> 00:13:59.130
  • became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian
  • 00:13:59.140 --> 00:14:04.140
  • master. 3) And his master saw that the Lord was with him
  • 00:14:04.150 --> 00:14:08.130
  • (that's a key) and that the Lord caused all that he did to
  • 00:14:08.140 --> 00:14:11.170
  • succeed in his hands. (God's favor in his life). 4) So Joseph
  • 00:14:11.180 --> 00:14:17.100
  • found favor in his sight and attended him, and made him...
  • 00:14:17.110 --> 00:14:20.230
  • and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of
  • 00:14:20.240 --> 00:14:24.190
  • all that he had. (Look at verse) 5) From the time that he made
  • 00:14:24.200 --> 00:14:30.070
  • him overseer in his house and over all that he had the Lord
  • 00:14:30.080 --> 00:14:32.220
  • blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing of
  • 00:14:32.230 --> 00:14:36.040
  • the Lord was over all that he had, in house and his field.
  • 00:14:36.050 --> 00:14:40.150
  • Joseph was large and in charge even though he was a slave. Why?
  • 00:14:40.160 --> 00:14:47.120
  • Because he stayed faithful; rather than giving up and
  • 00:14:47.130 --> 00:14:53.030
  • quitting on his dream, somehow even in the midst... Now
  • 00:14:53.040 --> 00:14:57.100
  • remember, he's just a seventeen year old boy when he's sold as
  • 00:14:57.110 --> 00:15:00.240
  • slave into Egypt. Just a youth! It would have been easy for him
  • 00:15:00.250 --> 00:15:05.280
  • to have given up. But rather than giving up, he somehow got
  • 00:15:05.290 --> 00:15:11.030
  • up in the power of God and he began to work hard. Joseph
  • 00:15:11.040 --> 00:15:16.050
  • couldn't understand, he didn't know why he was there. He could
  • 00:15:16.060 --> 00:15:20.150
  • have had no clue yet as to what God was doing and ultimately God
  • 00:15:20.160 --> 00:15:24.010
  • was going to save His nation Israel and his own family
  • 00:15:24.020 --> 00:15:27.010
  • through him. So what did he do? He just stayed by the stuff. He
  • 00:15:27.020 --> 00:15:31.100
  • kept trusting God, letting God use him, and he was diligent, he
  • 00:15:31.110 --> 00:15:36.280
  • was industrious, he was conscientious, he was obedient,
  • 00:15:36.290 --> 00:15:40.280
  • he was reliable. Put that on your resume! The hand of the
  • 00:15:40.290 --> 00:15:47.120
  • Lord was with him and He made him a successful man. And
  • 00:15:47.130 --> 00:15:50.040
  • everything he touched was transformed. Even this pagan
  • 00:15:50.050 --> 00:15:52.260
  • Potiphar knew that there was something different about this
  • 00:15:52.270 --> 00:15:57.140
  • young man, so he put him in charge of everything. The point
  • 00:15:57.150 --> 00:16:02.000
  • that I'm making is he remained faithful and steadfast and
  • 00:16:02.010 --> 00:16:07.130
  • served the Lord even though his dreams were at this point
  • 00:16:07.140 --> 00:16:12.230
  • diminished. Let me ask you, what kind of servant are you? What
  • 00:16:12.240 --> 00:16:19.070
  • kind of servant of Christ are you? Are you a... a fair-weather
  • 00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:23.130
  • Christian? Some of you, your children got sick and you quit
  • 00:16:23.140 --> 00:16:28.080
  • on God because you couldn't understand what God was doing.
  • 00:16:28.090 --> 00:16:36.200
  • Or maybe someone hurt you, insulted you, abused you, took
  • 00:16:36.210 --> 00:16:41.210
  • advantage of you. And you decided to give up. You stopped
  • 00:16:41.220 --> 00:16:47.130
  • serving the Lord. You lost your job. Your career path took a...
  • 00:16:47.140 --> 00:16:51.110
  • a huge distraction if not a dead-end and you stopped serving
  • 00:16:51.120 --> 00:16:55.080
  • God! You just sort of quit on God because your dreams seemed
  • 00:16:55.090 --> 00:17:05.140
  • to be gone. Years ago I wrote in my Bible as a young man these
  • 00:17:05.150 --> 00:17:10.010
  • words: "You can tell the size of the Christian by what it takes
  • 00:17:10.020 --> 00:17:12.150
  • to stop him... you can tell the size of a Christian by what it
  • 00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:17.070
  • takes to stop him." And Joseph refused to allow circumstances
  • 00:17:17.080 --> 00:17:20.250
  • to keep him from living for the Lord. No one could seemingly be
  • 00:17:20.260 --> 00:17:25.050
  • more mistreated than this man, and yet he was faithful. He
  • 00:17:25.060 --> 00:17:33.010
  • reminds me of Jesus... Jesus who endured the cross and despised
  • 00:17:33.020 --> 00:17:38.180
  • the shame; Jesus whose body was broken for us on the cross. As
  • 00:17:38.190 --> 00:17:45.260
  • He died, every ounce of his being was crying out, "Quit!"
  • 00:17:45.270 --> 00:17:55.250
  • But He didn't quit; He finished the work the Father sent Him to
  • 00:17:55.260 --> 00:17:59.070
  • do. He paid the price in full. Aren't you glad Jesus didn't
  • 00:17:59.080 --> 00:18:03.250
  • quit on you at the cross? He loves you and gave His life for
  • 00:18:03.260 --> 00:18:09.210
  • you, and rose again because in every dark night there is a
  • 00:18:09.220 --> 00:18:15.110
  • resurrection coming for the follower of Jesus. So what are
  • 00:18:15.120 --> 00:18:20.180
  • you supposed to do when life bottoms out and you're in some
  • 00:18:20.190 --> 00:18:23.200
  • pit, or you're... you're out there some place, you don't
  • 00:18:23.210 --> 00:18:26.180
  • understand where or why God has placed you there? You just keep
  • 00:18:26.190 --> 00:18:30.230
  • on praising. You keep on serving. You keep on loving. You
  • 00:18:30.240 --> 00:18:36.090
  • keep on giving. You keep on wit... Some of you, you know,
  • 00:18:36.100 --> 00:18:40.060
  • you... you... your finances are in trouble and what have you
  • 00:18:40.070 --> 00:18:43.040
  • done? You just stopped giving! You quit being faithful to the
  • 00:18:43.050 --> 00:18:46.200
  • Lord. But if you will stay open to what God is doing... if you
  • 00:18:46.210 --> 00:18:49.150
  • will stay obedient to what God is doing in your life... stay
  • 00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:53.100
  • optimistic about His purposes and plans for you... be faithful
  • 00:18:53.110 --> 00:18:57.290
  • to Him! Be faithful even unto death! Job said [Job 13:15],
  • 00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:03.010
  • "God, even if you slay me, yet will I trust in You!" The
  • 00:19:03.020 --> 00:19:11.120
  • Scripture says [1 Corinthians 15:58], "Therefore, my beloved
  • 00:19:11.130 --> 00:19:13.040
  • brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in
  • 00:19:13.050 --> 00:19:18.050
  • the work of the Lord, for as much as you know, your labor is
  • 00:19:18.060 --> 00:19:21.290
  • not in vain in the Lord." So again, I can't answer all your
  • 00:19:22.000 --> 00:19:28.210
  • questions about why and what happened, but I can give you
  • 00:19:28.220 --> 00:19:34.150
  • God's word and counsel regarding what you're to do when you get
  • 00:19:34.160 --> 00:19:38.170
  • in one of these crisis times, one of these crash experiences
  • 00:19:38.180 --> 00:19:42.290
  • in your life, and the first thing you need to do is to
  • 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:45.200
  • remember that God is faithful... remember that! And then remain
  • 00:19:45.210 --> 00:19:49.250
  • faithful in the Lord. Because the fact is people want to know
  • 00:19:49.260 --> 00:19:55.070
  • is your faith real? And if it works in the good times, does it
  • 00:19:55.080 --> 00:19:58.150
  • work in the bad times? This Jesus you talk about that you
  • 00:19:58.160 --> 00:20:04.230
  • say you love... if... if... if He's enough when things are
  • 00:20:04.240 --> 00:20:09.260
  • going really well, is He enough when things are going really,
  • 00:20:09.270 --> 00:20:12.230
  • really bad? The spirit of this man Joseph was such that the
  • 00:20:12.240 --> 00:20:27.080
  • world took notice of him; he was different... he was different
  • 00:20:27.090 --> 00:20:29.100
  • and it was the work of Christ in him. And then the third thing...
  • 00:20:29.110 --> 00:20:31.170
  • is to reject bitterness... reject bitterness. If there's
  • 00:20:31.180 --> 00:20:37.070
  • anyone who could become bitter... angry, and bitterness
  • 00:20:37.080 --> 00:20:41.170
  • is anger turned inward... If there's anyone who could become
  • 00:20:41.180 --> 00:20:44.290
  • resentful, it would have been Joseph. Ah... ah... you know,
  • 00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:49.060
  • his brothers hated him. His own family threw him out... ah...
  • 00:20:49.070 --> 00:20:55.030
  • wanted to kill him, couldn't do it, decided not to kill him but
  • 00:20:55.040 --> 00:20:58.100
  • they robbed him of his coat. But, you know, they took his
  • 00:20:58.110 --> 00:21:02.150
  • coat but they could never steal his character. He still had his
  • 00:21:02.160 --> 00:21:09.280
  • character intact. And he refused resentment. Ultimately when
  • 00:21:09.290 --> 00:21:16.010
  • his... when his despiteful, hateful brothers stood before
  • 00:21:16.020 --> 00:21:19.060
  • him, some thirteen years later, he would forgive them and
  • 00:21:19.070 --> 00:21:24.200
  • provide for them. It's a powerful story, but at this
  • 00:21:24.210 --> 00:21:30.280
  • point let it be said that he rejected resentment; he refused
  • 00:21:30.290 --> 00:21:37.020
  • bitterness in his life. There are so many angry, hostile,
  • 00:21:37.030 --> 00:21:46.040
  • bitter people around us today. Why? Because of so much hurt and
  • 00:21:46.050 --> 00:21:53.000
  • pain in their lives. Hurting people often hurt other people.
  • 00:21:53.010 --> 00:22:00.210
  • People that have experienced heartache in their lives often
  • 00:22:00.220 --> 00:22:03.160
  • become hardened by the beast of bitterness. And you know...
  • 00:22:03.170 --> 00:22:08.290
  • eaten alive by bitterness, I should say. Bitterness is an
  • 00:22:09.000 --> 00:22:15.270
  • acid that will destroy its own container. It will devour you.
  • 00:22:15.280 --> 00:22:23.110
  • But rather than bowing to bitterness we should have a
  • 00:22:23.120 --> 00:22:25.250
  • spirit of... not of revenge or hatred or seething rage, but a
  • 00:22:25.260 --> 00:22:30.060
  • quiet confidence in God. He said [Romans 12:19], "Vengeance is
  • 00:22:30.070 --> 00:22:34.260
  • mine, says the Lord." Let God take care of your hurt, your
  • 00:22:34.270 --> 00:22:41.230
  • pain and those who may abuse you or whatever. Don't allow
  • 00:22:41.240 --> 00:22:46.260
  • bitterness to consume your life. First Peter chapter 2, verse 20
  • 00:22:46.270 --> 00:22:51.010
  • says this: 20) For what credit is it if, when you are beaten
  • 00:22:51.020 --> 00:22:54.050
  • for your thoughts, you take it patiently. ([In] Other words,
  • 00:22:54.060 --> 00:22:57.080
  • you deserve it, you take a beaten... you know, no big deal)
  • 00:22:57.090 --> 00:23:00.090
  • But when you do good and deserve... and suffer for it...
  • 00:23:00.100 --> 00:23:05.220
  • when you do good and suffer for it if you take it patiently
  • 00:23:05.230 --> 00:23:07.260
  • (That is, you endure) this is commendable before God. So if
  • 00:23:07.270 --> 00:23:14.180
  • you are opposed... if you are suffering because of the actions
  • 00:23:14.190 --> 00:23:20.070
  • of another, don't be a victim to your bitterness and your
  • 00:23:20.080 --> 00:23:25.130
  • brokenness in your life! Get over it and get on with your
  • 00:23:25.140 --> 00:23:29.090
  • life. You can begin again in the power of God. Don't bow down to
  • 00:23:29.100 --> 00:23:34.290
  • any bitterness in your life at all. We'll talk about that a
  • 00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:39.040
  • little more in another message. But one final thing, rest in the
  • 00:23:39.050 --> 00:23:45.060
  • providence of God. When I say rest in the providence of God,
  • 00:23:45.070 --> 00:23:48.280
  • remember the providence of God is that God's plan is in action,
  • 00:23:48.290 --> 00:23:53.200
  • that His invisible hand is working in us, and we need to
  • 00:23:53.210 --> 00:23:58.250
  • make sure that we don't push providence; that... that we
  • 00:23:58.260 --> 00:24:05.160
  • don't manipulate in some way the will of God for our life. Like
  • 00:24:05.170 --> 00:24:09.210
  • the little boy who planted radish seeds and kept pulling
  • 00:24:09.220 --> 00:24:12.170
  • them up to see if they were growing or not. [laughter] Many
  • 00:24:12.180 --> 00:24:17.180
  • times we're not willing to wait on God's timing in our lives. We
  • 00:24:17.190 --> 00:24:23.190
  • want to just push through... we want to do something, even if
  • 00:24:23.200 --> 00:24:28.070
  • it's wrong. Isaiah speaks of those who light their own fires
  • 00:24:28.080 --> 00:24:31.230
  • in the darkness and the result is disaster; you need to go
  • 00:24:31.240 --> 00:24:37.180
  • around kindling fires for yourself. Or like Jacob who is
  • 00:24:37.190 --> 00:24:40.140
  • constantly... this is Joseph's father Jacob... constantly
  • 00:24:40.150 --> 00:24:43.250
  • conniving and cheating and working his way, trying to make
  • 00:24:43.260 --> 00:24:46.180
  • the latest deal to get ahead. No! Trust in the providence of
  • 00:24:46.190 --> 00:24:51.190
  • God! Wait and rest in what God has given you! God's given you a
  • 00:24:51.200 --> 00:24:58.080
  • promise in His word, you keep believing it! If God has given
  • 00:24:58.090 --> 00:25:05.020
  • you a dream... Psalm 119, verse 49 says: "Remember, O Lord, Your
  • 00:25:05.030 --> 00:25:11.210
  • word to Your servant; we have hoped in Your word... Remember
  • 00:25:11.220 --> 00:25:17.290
  • Your word, O Lord." You remember the word of God to you. Humble
  • 00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:24.030
  • yourself under the mighty hand of God and in due season He will
  • 00:25:24.040 --> 00:25:29.070
  • exalt you. Joseph was buried in this pit, he was sold as a
  • 00:25:29.080 --> 00:25:33.250
  • slave, he was forgotten in prison, he was seduced... or
  • 00:25:33.260 --> 00:25:41.000
  • attempted to be seduced by his ah... boss's wife and falsely
  • 00:25:41.010 --> 00:25:43.110
  • accused because of it, he was thrown into jail, then back into
  • 00:25:43.120 --> 00:25:49.000
  • jail. Remember, he's just seventeen and it was thirteen
  • 00:25:49.010 --> 00:25:52.290
  • long years between the promise that God gave him and the
  • 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:57.240
  • ultimate fulfillment of that promise! Thirteen long years of
  • 00:25:57.250 --> 00:26:03.250
  • struggling and hurting and striving, and yet believing and
  • 00:26:03.260 --> 00:26:08.020
  • trusting in God! Thirteen years! If you're in a big hole in the
  • 00:26:08.030 --> 00:26:14.030
  • ground... a pit and you don't know what, you don't know why,
  • 00:26:14.040 --> 00:26:17.120
  • you don't know what to do, just say as the man in the Scriptures
  • 00:26:17.130 --> 00:26:22.270
  • says [2 Chronicles 20:12], "Lord, we don't know what to do
  • 00:26:22.280 --> 00:26:25.040
  • but our eyes are on You." Remember... remember, God's in
  • 00:26:25.050 --> 00:26:29.070
  • control! Remain faithful and serve the Lord no matter what,
  • 00:26:29.080 --> 00:26:35.090
  • no matter the cost. Don't you dare bow down to bitterness.
  • 00:26:35.100 --> 00:26:40.190
  • Refuse resentment and bitterness and anger in your life. That
  • 00:26:40.200 --> 00:26:44.110
  • will only destroy you. And then rest in the providence of God,
  • 00:26:44.120 --> 00:26:51.200
  • that He is working in your life, doing all things... [Romans
  • 00:26:51.210 --> 00:26:55.190
  • 8:28] "working all things together for good to those who
  • 00:26:55.200 --> 00:27:00.130
  • love the Lord and are called according to His purpose."
  • 00:27:00.140 --> 00:27:03.010
  • [Music]
  • 00:27:03.020 --> 00:27:10.000
  • I don't think anybody likes speed bumps
  • 00:27:10.010 --> 00:27:11.200
  • when it comes to chasing
  • 00:27:11.210 --> 00:27:13.060
  • the dreams of their lives and as Christians we walk in joyful
  • 00:27:13.070 --> 00:27:17.110
  • hope but that doesn't mean that we won't one day see ourselves
  • 00:27:17.120 --> 00:27:20.040
  • like Joseph, sitting in the bottom of a pit wondering what
  • 00:27:20.050 --> 00:27:23.000
  • happened to the dreams that God put in our hearts. But it's what
  • 00:27:23.010 --> 00:27:28.170
  • you do in that moment, when you're in the pit, when it seems
  • 00:27:28.180 --> 00:27:31.190
  • that everything is against you that you show your commitment to
  • 00:27:31.200 --> 00:27:34.280
  • the Lord to pursue his dreams for your life. Are you going to
  • 00:27:34.290 --> 00:27:38.000
  • give up or are you going to follow him. Are you going to
  • 00:27:38.010 --> 00:27:43.070
  • allow yourself to grow bitter and hard, lash out against God
  • 00:27:43.080 --> 00:27:45.290
  • or will you trust him and be faithful to him and rest in him
  • 00:27:46.000 --> 00:27:50.130
  • no matter what. Only one of those paths leads to life and
  • 00:27:50.140 --> 00:27:55.090
  • only one of those paths keeps your God-given dream alive so
  • 00:27:55.100 --> 00:27:59.200
  • today I want to encourage you to not let yourself and your dream
  • 00:27:59.210 --> 00:28:03.250
  • by the circumstances that are around you. Trust the God who
  • 00:28:03.260 --> 00:28:09.130
  • made you and loves you deeply. Believe him, trust him to bring
  • 00:28:09.140 --> 00:28:14.100
  • your dreams to life even if your dreams have seemingly vanished.
  • 00:28:14.110 --> 00:28:18.280
  • Trust him to resurrect your dreams for his glory and your
  • 00:28:18.290 --> 00:28:22.190
  • greatest good.
  • 00:28:22.200 --> 00:28:23.200
