  • [Music]
  • 00:00:11.230 --> 00:00:19.030
  • Hebrews, chapter 1, verses 6 through 9: 6) And
  • 00:00:19.040 --> 00:00:22.060
  • again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he
  • 00:00:22.070 --> 00:00:25.060
  • says, "Let all God's angels worship him." 7) Of
  • 00:00:25.070 --> 00:00:31.170
  • the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, and his
  • 00:00:31.180 --> 00:00:35.070
  • ministers (again, angels) a flame of fire." 8) But of the
  • 00:00:35.080 --> 00:00:40.040
  • Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the
  • 00:00:40.050 --> 00:00:44.100
  • scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. 9) You
  • 00:00:44.110 --> 00:00:48.180
  • have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God,
  • 00:00:48.190 --> 00:00:51.220
  • your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness (more than
  • 00:00:51.230 --> 00:00:55.190
  • your companions or) beyond your companions." That's speaking of
  • 00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:59.140
  • Christ who was full of joy. The "oil of gladness" means leaping
  • 00:00:59.150 --> 00:01:03.260
  • for joy. Jesus was full of life and joy. Never think that Jesus
  • 00:01:03.270 --> 00:01:10.020
  • was a pale, sanctimonious recluse. He was a Man among men,
  • 00:01:10.030 --> 00:01:14.180
  • the Son of God, the Savior of the world. And the focus always
  • 00:01:14.190 --> 00:01:19.050
  • is upon Him. "Of You, O God, Your throne is forever." I want
  • 00:01:19.060 --> 00:01:23.070
  • to remind you that angels exist, as we exist, to exalt our God,
  • 00:01:23.080 --> 00:01:28.230
  • to worship our God. For any of us it's not about us. Angels...
  • 00:01:28.240 --> 00:01:33.180
  • these are not about us. They're always about Him! Now I've been
  • 00:01:33.190 --> 00:01:39.010
  • telling you for a number of years that there is an unseen,
  • 00:01:39.020 --> 00:01:42.030
  • invisible world all around us. The physical world... the
  • 00:01:42.040 --> 00:01:46.090
  • tangible world is temporal and is passing away. Sometimes we
  • 00:01:46.100 --> 00:01:51.290
  • look at what we have around us and we say this is the real
  • 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:55.010
  • world. And when we talk about spiritual things, you know, "Oh,
  • 00:01:55.020 --> 00:01:58.120
  • tell me something real. Don't tell me something spiritual!"
  • 00:01:58.130 --> 00:02:01.270
  • Well, the spiritual world... the unseen, invisible world is more
  • 00:02:01.280 --> 00:02:05.200
  • real than what we see. And the unseen world dramatically,
  • 00:02:05.210 --> 00:02:10.160
  • dynamically influences the seen world. And all around us is a
  • 00:02:10.170 --> 00:02:16.140
  • realm... a supernatural dimension, the kingdom of God.
  • 00:02:16.150 --> 00:02:24.030
  • And in this realm... in this environment... this spiritual
  • 00:02:24.040 --> 00:02:27.220
  • environment there are angels, there are demon spirits who are
  • 00:02:27.230 --> 00:02:32.290
  • fallen angels, and certainly there is Satan, but above all
  • 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:38.210
  • and over all is God Himself who governs the universe. You might
  • 00:02:38.220 --> 00:02:43.190
  • ask the question... I even asked it when I was asked to write
  • 00:02:43.200 --> 00:02:46.280
  • this book by my publisher, why would I write a book about
  • 00:02:46.290 --> 00:02:50.280
  • angels? Why would I study angels? It may seem like a kind
  • 00:02:50.290 --> 00:02:55.020
  • of fringe topic and there's a lot of craziness and bazaar
  • 00:02:55.030 --> 00:02:58.190
  • things said about the supernatural and angels and all
  • 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:02.170
  • the rest. But what I wanted to do was to study what does the
  • 00:03:02.180 --> 00:03:07.200
  • Bible say? And while I resisted initially in doing this study
  • 00:03:07.210 --> 00:03:12.160
  • and preparing this book, I came to absolutely love it. I found
  • 00:03:12.170 --> 00:03:16.280
  • that there are nearly 300 references in the Bible to
  • 00:03:16.290 --> 00:03:20.220
  • angels. Last night I just... I had a list in my study of all
  • 00:03:20.230 --> 00:03:24.140
  • the angel references in the Scriptures, both Old Testament
  • 00:03:24.150 --> 00:03:27.120
  • and New Testament. And I just began to review them. It took me
  • 00:03:27.130 --> 00:03:31.050
  • well over an hour to review the angel announcements and
  • 00:03:31.060 --> 00:03:37.130
  • appearances and activity that we see throughout the Bible from
  • 00:03:37.140 --> 00:03:42.090
  • Genesis to Revelation. So this is not a fringe subject. It is a
  • 00:03:42.100 --> 00:03:46.200
  • faith subject and this unseen world is very, very real. But
  • 00:03:46.210 --> 00:03:52.270
  • the reason we do it is because when we understand the mission
  • 00:03:52.280 --> 00:03:56.240
  • of angels, we understand better God's... (listen to this) God's
  • 00:03:56.250 --> 00:04:02.230
  • sovereign control of the universe and of our lives. When
  • 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:09.290
  • we study angels and who they really are and what they do and
  • 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:12.290
  • why it matters, we... we grow in our depth and understanding of
  • 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:19.100
  • who God is; His greatness, His majesty, His glory! Because
  • 00:04:19.110 --> 00:04:28.060
  • angels are worshipers, angels are witnesses and angels are
  • 00:04:28.070 --> 00:04:33.290
  • warriors... mighty warriors; weapons in the hands of Mighty
  • 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:39.000
  • God. Now if you want a theological definition of
  • 00:04:39.010 --> 00:04:43.240
  • angels, and for all the theological types, which should
  • 00:04:43.250 --> 00:04:47.260
  • include all of us... we all should study theology, that's
  • 00:04:47.270 --> 00:04:51.150
  • the Bible. But there's a great theologian by the name of John
  • 00:04:51.160 --> 00:04:55.200
  • Calvin of yesteryear and here's what Calvin said if you want a
  • 00:04:55.210 --> 00:04:59.160
  • theological definition of angels and who they are. "The angels
  • 00:04:59.170 --> 00:05:05.140
  • are dispensers and administrators of divine
  • 00:05:05.150 --> 00:05:08.280
  • blessing toward us. They regard our safety, undertake our
  • 00:05:08.290 --> 00:05:10.160
  • defense, direct our ways and exercise a constant... (here's a
  • 00:05:10.170 --> 00:05:15.030
  • word)... solicitude that no evil befall us." Angels. Who are
  • 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:23.260
  • they? What do they do? Are they here right now? Well, I'm going
  • 00:05:23.270 --> 00:05:30.080
  • to take a couple of weeks to draw from this study that I did
  • 00:05:30.090 --> 00:05:34.180
  • in the angel book some of the lessons that we all need to
  • 00:05:34.190 --> 00:05:38.170
  • learn. Just the basic truths, if you will, regarding these
  • 00:05:38.180 --> 00:05:42.080
  • angels. I said they are worshipers, they are witnesses,
  • 00:05:42.090 --> 00:05:44.280
  • they are warriors. Let's look at angels as worshipers. The angels
  • 00:05:44.290 --> 00:05:51.050
  • ... "Let all of God's angels worship Him." Hebrews 1:6.
  • 00:05:51.060 --> 00:05:58.250
  • 24/7/365, from eternity past, eternity present and eternity
  • 00:05:58.260 --> 00:06:05.140
  • future the angels are exalting Christ, extolling the greatness
  • 00:06:05.150 --> 00:06:09.140
  • and the glory of God. We all need to remember that angels are
  • 00:06:09.150 --> 00:06:14.190
  • created beings; created by God. Colossians 1:16 tells us of the
  • 00:06:14.200 --> 00:06:21.260
  • creation. "For by Him all things were created in heaven and on
  • 00:06:21.270 --> 00:06:26.000
  • earth, visible and invisible, (and of course the angels would
  • 00:06:26.010 --> 00:06:30.040
  • be included in the invisible realm), whether thrones or
  • 00:06:30.050 --> 00:06:33.090
  • dominions or rulers or authority, all things were
  • 00:06:33.100 --> 00:06:36.200
  • created through Him and for Him." So angels were not born;
  • 00:06:36.210 --> 00:06:43.220
  • neither do they die. In that sense the angels are immortal.
  • 00:06:43.230 --> 00:06:50.070
  • And their purpose first and foremost is to offer endless and
  • 00:06:50.080 --> 00:06:56.120
  • eternal praise to God. "Let all the angels worship Him." The
  • 00:06:56.130 --> 00:07:04.240
  • angels this very moment are celebrating around the throne of
  • 00:07:04.250 --> 00:07:08.130
  • God. Where do angels live? Well, they interact in the earth but
  • 00:07:08.140 --> 00:07:12.280
  • their primary home... their home base is the throne of God, the
  • 00:07:12.290 --> 00:07:19.230
  • heaven of the heavens. They are immortal. They were created in
  • 00:07:19.240 --> 00:07:25.270
  • eternity past. Job 38, verse 4-7 gives us a hint as to when they
  • 00:07:25.280 --> 00:07:32.080
  • were created. Job is arguing with God about his own
  • 00:07:32.090 --> 00:07:36.040
  • circumstances and his pride is showing. And so God calls him
  • 00:07:36.050 --> 00:07:41.050
  • out in Job 38, verses 4 and 7: 4)"Where were you (God asked)
  • 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:47.000
  • when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have
  • 00:07:47.010 --> 00:07:50.210
  • understanding and 5) who determined its measurements?
  • 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:53.290
  • Surely you know! (insert sarcasm there) Or who stretched the line
  • 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:59.290
  • upon it, 6) or what the... when were... what were the bases sunk
  • 00:08:00.020 --> 00:08:03.140
  • or who laid its cornerstone 7)... when the morning stars...
  • 00:08:03.150 --> 00:08:08.110
  • (that's an angel reference) 7) when the morning star... (not
  • 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:11.210
  • physical stars, but the stars of heaven, these angelic beings)
  • 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:15.140
  • sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy." "Sons
  • 00:08:15.150 --> 00:08:20.280
  • of God"... angel reference. And this, of course speaks of an
  • 00:08:20.290 --> 00:08:26.150
  • angel choir... angelic hosts of praise worshipers, offering
  • 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:33.210
  • their praise and glory to God. And therefore they remind us of
  • 00:08:33.220 --> 00:08:41.170
  • our need to worship God. I'm inspired by these angels and
  • 00:08:41.180 --> 00:08:48.150
  • motivated to sing with the angels in adoration and in
  • 00:08:48.160 --> 00:08:54.140
  • celebration of our God. Did you know the New Testament tells us
  • 00:08:54.150 --> 00:08:57.100
  • that angels observe us in our worship? I wonder what they
  • 00:08:57.110 --> 00:09:01.080
  • observe when they observe you and your worship? They must be
  • 00:09:01.090 --> 00:09:05.220
  • amazed at some of us because they know we know the truth
  • 00:09:05.230 --> 00:09:10.040
  • about Jesus Christ. And yet we offer no exuberant praise or
  • 00:09:10.050 --> 00:09:14.040
  • elevated praise to Him. When we praise God we are preparing for
  • 00:09:14.050 --> 00:09:18.200
  • heaven. And one day we will join the angel chorus and the angel
  • 00:09:18.210 --> 00:09:23.130
  • band in celebrating our God and His glory forever! We get a
  • 00:09:23.140 --> 00:09:28.130
  • glimpse of this glory in Isaiah chapter 6 which is a key passage
  • 00:09:28.140 --> 00:09:32.120
  • about angels in the Bible, and there's an entire chapter on
  • 00:09:32.130 --> 00:09:36.230
  • this one in the book. But this is when Isaiah the prophet is
  • 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:41.190
  • broken hearted because King Uzziah, the great king of Israel
  • 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:44.080
  • has died, and that was a time of uncertainty for Israel. They
  • 00:09:44.090 --> 00:09:49.010
  • didn't know the future of their country. Much like our own
  • 00:09:49.020 --> 00:09:51.290
  • country right now, there was an absence of leadership and... and
  • 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.270
  • the king had died. And yet the King of heaven lives. And Isaiah
  • 00:09:55.280 --> 00:10:01.150
  • went to the temple to seek answers and solutions to the
  • 00:10:01.160 --> 00:10:05.270
  • problems of his time, and when he was there he was given a
  • 00:10:05.280 --> 00:10:10.240
  • vision of the glory of God. And in verse 1 we read this: (put it
  • 00:10:10.250 --> 00:10:15.030
  • up there) 1) In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord,
  • 00:10:15.040 --> 00:10:17.030
  • high and lifted up; sitting on a throne, and the train of his
  • 00:10:17.040 --> 00:10:21.230
  • robe filled the temple. 2) And above him stood the seraphim Now
  • 00:10:21.240 --> 00:10:28.250
  • the seraphim are an angelic rank. Angels are ranked and
  • 00:10:28.260 --> 00:10:32.190
  • organized. 2)... Each had six wings... Here's a reference to
  • 00:10:32.200 --> 00:10:36.050
  • angel wings. We're not certain if the wings are symbolic or
  • 00:10:36.060 --> 00:10:41.140
  • actual wings, but in this case the wings are representative.
  • 00:10:41.150 --> 00:10:46.240
  • 2)... With two he covered his face, and with two he covered
  • 00:10:46.250 --> 00:10:49.250
  • his feet, and with two he flew. And thus the reference to angels
  • 00:10:49.260 --> 00:10:54.150
  • flying. And they are crying out, according to the Scripture,
  • 00:10:54.160 --> 00:10:58.260
  • [Isaiah 6:3]: 3... "Holy, holy, holy is (the Lord God
  • 00:10:58.270 --> 00:11:04.040
  • Almighty!)... the Lord of hosts; and "the whole earth is full of
  • 00:11:04.050 --> 00:11:07.080
  • His glory!" And so we see behind the scenes, beyond the earth
  • 00:11:07.090 --> 00:11:16.150
  • these angel beings worshiping God and declaring His glory.
  • 00:11:16.160 --> 00:11:24.120
  • Again, when we do that we also hear the brush of angel wings.
  • 00:11:24.130 --> 00:11:29.270
  • The angels are immortal. The angels are innumerable...
  • 00:11:29.280 --> 00:11:35.130
  • innumerable. How many angels exist? We don't really know.
  • 00:11:35.140 --> 00:11:40.250
  • What we do know is, according to Daniel 7:10 that: "A stream of
  • 00:11:40.260 --> 00:11:47.060
  • fire issued and came out from before Him; and thousand
  • 00:11:47.070 --> 00:11:50.220
  • thousands served Him (that's the angels), and ten thousand times
  • 00:11:50.230 --> 00:11:55.120
  • ten thousand stood before Him; and the court sat in judgment,
  • 00:11:55.130 --> 00:11:58.230
  • and the books were opened." Thousands upon thousands and
  • 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:03.160
  • tens of thousands upon tens of thousands! Millions of angels...
  • 00:12:03.170 --> 00:12:10.280
  • millions of angels! This reference would be like saying
  • 00:12:10.290 --> 00:12:17.120
  • if someone asked you, "How many stars?" You would just say, "Oh
  • 00:12:17.130 --> 00:12:20.020
  • I don't know... billions!" The reference here is an innumerable
  • 00:12:20.030 --> 00:12:25.040
  • host in the heavens and on the earth of these angel beings.
  • 00:12:25.050 --> 00:12:31.180
  • They... they are glorious beings! Beautiful, magnificent,
  • 00:12:31.190 --> 00:12:38.290
  • bright and shining in one instance as the sun. The angels
  • 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:42.210
  • are not only innumerable, they're inspirational. As I said
  • 00:12:42.220 --> 00:12:45.260
  • we are prompted to praise our God because we're inspired by
  • 00:12:45.270 --> 00:12:48.290
  • the angels. And again, I just want to say the book, while it's
  • 00:12:49.000 --> 00:12:53.140
  • about angels, it's ultimately about our God! The nearness of
  • 00:12:53.150 --> 00:12:57.180
  • God, the presence of God, and that angels elevate us to
  • 00:12:57.190 --> 00:13:02.110
  • experience Him in a deeper way. The angels are invisible. Rarely
  • 00:13:02.120 --> 00:13:11.010
  • do we see angels. We see them in the Bible from time to time.
  • 00:13:11.020 --> 00:13:16.070
  • They manifest themselves in a physical presence. I was asked
  • 00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:20.140
  • between services are they male or are they female? And the
  • 00:13:20.150 --> 00:13:24.010
  • answer is unknown. From time to time they represented ... are
  • 00:13:24.020 --> 00:13:29.050
  • represented in the Scripture as male warriors. But they have no
  • 00:13:29.060 --> 00:13:35.260
  • physical properties but may manifest themselves... Here's
  • 00:13:35.270 --> 00:13:39.020
  • the thing. Angels choose to be invisible. They choose to be
  • 00:13:39.030 --> 00:13:42.140
  • backstage, if you will, pointing to center stage of Christ. They
  • 00:13:42.150 --> 00:13:48.140
  • are, as Billy Graham called them, secret agents, and they do
  • 00:13:48.150 --> 00:13:51.140
  • their job very well. They work undercover. They work behind the
  • 00:13:51.150 --> 00:13:55.150
  • scenes. What they do you don't typically see. I believe in
  • 00:13:55.160 --> 00:14:01.140
  • angels. I've never personally seen an angel that I know of,
  • 00:14:01.150 --> 00:14:08.180
  • though the writer of Hebrews says when we show hospitality to
  • 00:14:08.190 --> 00:14:11.190
  • strangers we may minister to angels unaware. In other words,
  • 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:18.180
  • it could be an angel and you're serving God by serving this one,
  • 00:14:18.190 --> 00:14:22.250
  • a stranger in your life. But I do... having said that I've
  • 00:14:22.260 --> 00:14:29.100
  • never seen an angel... I do know that I have experienced divine
  • 00:14:29.110 --> 00:14:33.020
  • activity in my life, the supernatural presence of God in
  • 00:14:33.030 --> 00:14:36.210
  • my life, and I have sensed God's protection, I have sensed God's
  • 00:14:36.220 --> 00:14:41.270
  • presence in my life in very real ways, and at times I've sensed
  • 00:14:41.280 --> 00:14:46.140
  • angel presence. These angels
  • 00:14:46.150 --> 00:14:50.120
  • are also invincible. They are immortal, they are innumerable,
  • 00:14:50.130 --> 00:14:56.210
  • they are inspirational, they are invisible, they are invincible!
  • 00:14:56.220 --> 00:15:01.240
  • By that I mean powerful. Second Thessalonians 1:7: "And to grant
  • 00:15:01.250 --> 00:15:08.130
  • relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us when the Lord
  • 00:15:08.140 --> 00:15:11.210
  • Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels!" So when
  • 00:15:11.220 --> 00:15:19.140
  • you think of angels, don't think of a soft, sentimental, new age,
  • 00:15:19.150 --> 00:15:24.070
  • wispy figure that floats through the air, a little butterfly, a
  • 00:15:24.080 --> 00:15:30.090
  • little cuddly cherub, or a Disney princess, or your fairy
  • 00:15:30.100 --> 00:15:38.000
  • god mother. None of the above. Angels are powerful spirit
  • 00:15:38.010 --> 00:15:45.110
  • beings. They are mighty and strong. We see them
  • 00:15:45.120 --> 00:15:50.180
  • in the Bible holding back wind, and moving oceans.
  • 00:15:50.190 --> 00:15:58.240
  • We... we see angels judging the world. God uses angels to
  • 00:15:58.250 --> 00:16:04.000
  • execute judgment. We saw that especially in the book of
  • 00:16:04.010 --> 00:16:07.210
  • Revelation in the pouring out of wrath during the Tribulation,
  • 00:16:07.220 --> 00:16:12.050
  • and these angel judges wreaking havoc upon an unbelieving world.
  • 00:16:12.060 --> 00:16:20.030
  • It happened in the Old Testament when only two angels walked into
  • 00:16:20.040 --> 00:16:24.050
  • Sodom and Gomorrah and brought the judgment of God. They tore
  • 00:16:24.060 --> 00:16:30.070
  • the town down and burned it up, just two powerful angels. Just
  • 00:16:30.080 --> 00:16:36.080
  • one angel executing judgment at the gate of Eden, east of Eden
  • 00:16:36.090 --> 00:16:40.030
  • when the man and the woman sinned against God and they were
  • 00:16:40.040 --> 00:16:43.100
  • cast out in judgment from the Garden, and God posted an angel
  • 00:16:43.110 --> 00:16:48.070
  • east of Eden. When Jesus came out of the grave it was an angel
  • 00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:51.120
  • who... who rolled the stone away... just one, rolled that
  • 00:16:51.130 --> 00:16:55.180
  • massive stone away. But even bigger than that at the end of
  • 00:16:55.190 --> 00:16:59.250
  • time when Satan is put into the pit... the bottomless pit, God
  • 00:16:59.260 --> 00:17:05.180
  • sent one angel with a key and a chain. Think about that. All the
  • 00:17:05.190 --> 00:17:12.250
  • havoc and hell that Satan in his mighty furor has unleashed upon
  • 00:17:12.260 --> 00:17:17.220
  • the earth, but when it comes time to put him away... to put
  • 00:17:17.230 --> 00:17:20.210
  • him in the pit, God just sends one angel, and boop! You're in.
  • 00:17:20.220 --> 00:17:25.060
  • Doesn't sound like a cuddly cherub to me. We love to think
  • 00:17:25.070 --> 00:17:28.270
  • of angels comforting us, and they do, but remember, it is
  • 00:17:28.280 --> 00:17:32.110
  • their strength that comforts us. It is... it is their power like
  • 00:17:32.120 --> 00:17:37.000
  • soldiers in a heavenly army. The angels are awesome because our
  • 00:17:37.010 --> 00:17:45.170
  • God is awesome. The angels are mighty but they are not
  • 00:17:45.180 --> 00:17:50.050
  • almighty. They do the work of God. The angels are also
  • 00:17:50.060 --> 00:17:55.130
  • intelligent. They have minds, emotions, and wills, and we see
  • 00:17:55.140 --> 00:18:01.200
  • that. They have various names. We're given two of the names in
  • 00:18:01.210 --> 00:18:04.230
  • Scripture. Michael and Gabriel are two of the angels... high
  • 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:08.130
  • ranking angels' names. Most of them are unnamed and unsung,
  • 00:18:08.140 --> 00:18:14.000
  • again in keeping with their invisible nature to stay behind
  • 00:18:14.010 --> 00:18:18.030
  • the scenes. Angels know it's not their name that matters, but
  • 00:18:18.040 --> 00:18:21.000
  • there's one name that matters: it's the name of our God! But
  • 00:18:21.010 --> 00:18:25.280
  • they are intelligent beings. They're not like storm troopers
  • 00:18:25.290 --> 00:18:29.200
  • in Star Wars, just animated warriors. They're glorious
  • 00:18:29.210 --> 00:18:36.180
  • beings who are beautiful and bright and they are ministering
  • 00:18:36.190 --> 00:18:39.140
  • spirits. If an angel manifested himself before us today, we
  • 00:18:39.150 --> 00:18:47.230
  • would be tempted to worship that angel. John, the beloved, the
  • 00:18:47.240 --> 00:18:52.280
  • great disciple, on the isle of Patmos was given this vision of
  • 00:18:52.290 --> 00:18:57.040
  • heaven and he saw a mighty angel and in the book of Revelation,
  • 00:18:57.050 --> 00:19:01.030
  • chapter 22, it was said that when he saw the angel he fell
  • 00:19:01.040 --> 00:19:05.250
  • down before the angel to worship and the angel said, "Get up!
  • 00:19:05.260 --> 00:19:09.120
  • Don't do that! Worship only God!" So any idea you may have
  • 00:19:09.130 --> 00:19:18.180
  • heard to elevate angels into a kind of demigod or semi-god or
  • 00:19:18.190 --> 00:19:24.150
  • god with a little "g", there's no such thing as worshiping
  • 00:19:24.160 --> 00:19:28.100
  • angels. One of the problems that New Testament
  • 00:19:28.110 --> 00:19:31.130
  • Christians had... the book of Colossians was written to offset
  • 00:19:31.140 --> 00:19:35.050
  • it in many ways... was the worship of angels in a... in a
  • 00:19:35.060 --> 00:19:38.170
  • form of new ageism that was taking place in the first
  • 00:19:38.180 --> 00:19:41.200
  • century... Gnosticism. So the worship of angels has always
  • 00:19:41.210 --> 00:19:46.120
  • been around but it's clear in the Scripture that we are never
  • 00:19:46.130 --> 00:19:49.110
  • to worship angels, as angels are around to point us to God.
  • 00:19:49.120 --> 00:19:55.230
  • Angels are worshipers. In the final moments let me say that
  • 00:19:55.240 --> 00:20:02.040
  • angels are witnesses. Angelos is the word for angel in the Bible;
  • 00:20:02.050 --> 00:20:07.010
  • it means messenger, one sent to deliver a message. And we see
  • 00:20:07.020 --> 00:20:14.130
  • that so often, whether it is a message introducing the Law.
  • 00:20:14.140 --> 00:20:19.020
  • Angels were present when Moses was given the Law... the Ten
  • 00:20:19.030 --> 00:20:23.130
  • Commandments, at heavenly announcements such as the birth
  • 00:20:23.140 --> 00:20:27.260
  • of Christ. I mentioned judgment; they're sent with messages of
  • 00:20:27.270 --> 00:20:31.130
  • judgment or a message of protection-that God is with you.
  • 00:20:31.140 --> 00:20:35.160
  • We often see angels carrying these messages especially in the
  • 00:20:35.170 --> 00:20:39.190
  • life of Jesus. Jesus spoke more about angels than anybody else
  • 00:20:39.200 --> 00:20:46.020
  • in the Bible. And when you read the Gospel, angels show up...
  • 00:20:46.030 --> 00:20:50.140
  • you hear their wings fluttering on almost every turn of the
  • 00:20:50.150 --> 00:20:53.240
  • page. Whether it was the angel announcing the birth, the
  • 00:20:53.250 --> 00:20:58.210
  • conception of Jesus to Mary, giving Mary the name Jesus
  • 00:20:58.220 --> 00:21:05.270
  • [Matthew 1:21, Luke 1:31] "for He will save His people from
  • 00:21:05.280 --> 00:21:08.220
  • their sin." Or speaking to Joseph in a dream as to the
  • 00:21:08.230 --> 00:21:12.290
  • origin of who Jesus is. Or, of course, outside in the fields of
  • 00:21:13.000 --> 00:21:16.290
  • Bethlehem when the angelic chorus shouted, [Luke 2:11]
  • 00:21:17.000 --> 00:21:19.210
  • "Unto you is born this day a Savior who is Christ the Lord!"
  • 00:21:19.220 --> 00:21:24.240
  • That beautiful and glorious appearing of angels outside of
  • 00:21:24.250 --> 00:21:28.040
  • Bethlehem at the birth of Christ. Or angels speaking to
  • 00:21:28.050 --> 00:21:33.000
  • Joseph, again in a dream, and telling him to take Mary and the
  • 00:21:33.010 --> 00:21:37.030
  • Child and flee to Egypt for safety because of Herod's
  • 00:21:37.040 --> 00:21:40.100
  • rampage to kill the Jewish boys under the age of two. So an
  • 00:21:40.110 --> 00:21:45.010
  • angel came to protect Jesus and to preserve that family, and an
  • 00:21:45.020 --> 00:21:49.120
  • angel came and told Joseph when it was time to come back. Or
  • 00:21:49.130 --> 00:21:52.170
  • when Jesus at the outset of His ministry, after His baptism,
  • 00:21:52.180 --> 00:21:57.050
  • goes into the wilderness and he tempted there for forty days,
  • 00:21:57.060 --> 00:22:02.110
  • and struggles with Satan and all those temptations! And He
  • 00:22:02.120 --> 00:22:07.000
  • overcomes it. And at the end, exhausted from this battle,
  • 00:22:07.010 --> 00:22:12.240
  • angels come and minister to Jesus and prepare Him for His
  • 00:22:12.250 --> 00:22:22.100
  • ministry that would be public for the next three days... three
  • 00:22:22.110 --> 00:22:25.160
  • years. Then throughout His ministry His words... He spoke
  • 00:22:25.170 --> 00:22:29.140
  • of the angels and told stories about angel beings through and
  • 00:22:29.150 --> 00:22:34.040
  • through. When it came to the end in the Garden of Gethsemane when
  • 00:22:34.050 --> 00:22:37.110
  • He's pouring out drops of blood in the Garden, getting ready for
  • 00:22:37.120 --> 00:22:40.140
  • the cross, going to the cross, surrendering to the will of the
  • 00:22:40.150 --> 00:22:44.120
  • Father, He's broken and before He's taken away into captivity,
  • 00:22:44.130 --> 00:22:52.120
  • angels come and minister to Jesus in the Garden of
  • 00:22:52.130 --> 00:22:56.120
  • Gethsemane. Jesus said that He could call for any... at any
  • 00:22:56.130 --> 00:23:03.030
  • time for a legion of angels... even seventy thousand angels,
  • 00:23:03.040 --> 00:23:09.170
  • and they would come and deliver Him. But you know what happened
  • 00:23:09.180 --> 00:23:15.150
  • at the cross where He could have spoken and in a word called the
  • 00:23:15.160 --> 00:23:21.060
  • angel armies to deliver Him. He bled and He died and He went the
  • 00:23:21.070 --> 00:23:24.270
  • distance, paid the price for our sins on the cross. Angels must
  • 00:23:24.280 --> 00:23:30.290
  • have been amazed as they stood and watched. If they have
  • 00:23:31.000 --> 00:23:36.040
  • emotions and the Bible says they do, they must have poured tears
  • 00:23:36.050 --> 00:23:40.050
  • as they saw the precious Son of God. Their swords were drawn and
  • 00:23:40.060 --> 00:23:43.060
  • ready to go, but they never got the commission because Jesus had
  • 00:23:43.070 --> 00:23:47.190
  • another mission and that was you and me. And then as I mentioned,
  • 00:23:47.200 --> 00:23:52.240
  • when the stone was rolled away, it was an angel that rolled the
  • 00:23:52.250 --> 00:23:55.260
  • stone away in the garden tomb, and it was an angel sitting on
  • 00:23:55.270 --> 00:23:58.240
  • that stone that said to... to the women who arrived at the
  • 00:23:58.250 --> 00:24:02.260
  • tomb, [Matthew 28:6] "He's not here! He is risen!" And then an
  • 00:24:02.270 --> 00:24:05.270
  • angel again, appearing with Jesus as He is ascending into
  • 00:24:05.280 --> 00:24:09.180
  • heaven after His resurrection... forty days later. It was an
  • 00:24:09.190 --> 00:24:13.130
  • angel ascending with Him who said to those disciples and to
  • 00:24:13.140 --> 00:24:16.150
  • all of us, [Acts 1:11] "Don't stand gazing into heaven. This
  • 00:24:16.160 --> 00:24:20.010
  • same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven will so
  • 00:24:20.020 --> 00:24:23.000
  • come in the same way that you've seen Him go!" So He goes into
  • 00:24:23.010 --> 00:24:27.180
  • heaven with an angel, and He's coming back as we read earlier
  • 00:24:27.190 --> 00:24:30.250
  • in 1 Thessalonians with the holy angel, with a shout of God, with
  • 00:24:30.260 --> 00:24:35.030
  • the voice of the archangel and the trumpet of God, Jesus is
  • 00:24:35.040 --> 00:24:39.030
  • coming again! And the angels are coming with Him... with Him! And
  • 00:24:39.040 --> 00:24:44.010
  • with... Throughout eternity in the new heavens and the new
  • 00:24:44.020 --> 00:24:47.010
  • earth the angels are present to glorify Him. So... so get this:
  • 00:24:47.020 --> 00:24:50.170
  • angels existed before creation. They were made by the hand of
  • 00:24:50.180 --> 00:24:54.200
  • God before time began. They have existed throughout all of time,
  • 00:24:54.210 --> 00:24:59.200
  • and they will exist after time as know it. And we will live
  • 00:24:59.210 --> 00:25:04.120
  • with the angels in the worship of the Lord our God forever and
  • 00:25:04.130 --> 00:25:08.110
  • ever! They are witnesses of these things and messengers of
  • 00:25:08.120 --> 00:25:16.210
  • hope.
  • 00:25:16.220 --> 00:25:19.100
  • [Music]
  • 00:25:19.110 --> 00:25:25.010
  • It was an angel who announced Christ's birth to the shepherds.
  • 00:25:25.020 --> 00:25:27.230
  • Angels ministered to Jesus when he was tempted and angels were
  • 00:25:27.240 --> 00:25:31.030
  • there when he rose victoriously from the grave. And the very
  • 00:25:31.040 --> 00:25:35.000
  • same angelic presence that was with Jesus on earth is closer to
  • 00:25:35.010 --> 00:25:39.140
  • you today than you might imagine. In my book, "Angels", I
  • 00:25:39.150 --> 00:25:43.030
  • show you how to see past the thin veil that separates our
  • 00:25:43.040 --> 00:25:46.210
  • reality from the angelic world and to discern the divine
  • 00:25:46.220 --> 00:25:51.230
  • activity that is deciding our life's journey today. Angels
  • 00:25:51.240 --> 00:25:56.060
  • exist and I believe that angels are all around us today. They
  • 00:25:56.070 --> 00:26:00.150
  • are worshippers of God and they are servants, ministers to God's
  • 00:26:00.160 --> 00:26:04.160
  • children. Angels are working behind the scenes in the drama
  • 00:26:04.170 --> 00:26:07.210
  • of life as God's messengers. They are warriors and servants
  • 00:26:07.220 --> 00:26:12.090
  • of God to execute His will and it's important that you
  • 00:26:12.100 --> 00:26:15.090
  • understand the purpose of angels in your life so that you won't
  • 00:26:15.100 --> 00:26:19.020
  • be confused by some of the myths and movies and television shows
  • 00:26:19.030 --> 00:26:22.120
  • and book that are more fictional than fact. It's important to
  • 00:26:22.130 --> 00:26:26.090
  • know what the Bible says about angels so that you can really
  • 00:26:26.100 --> 00:26:29.140
  • give an answer to your family and to your friends as to the

  • for giving so generously to help proclaim the gospel of Jesus
  • 00:26:49.220 --> 00:26:52.140
  • Christ, the word of God around the world.
  • 00:26:52.150 --> 00:26:57.230
  • In Isaish chapter 6, the prophet offers the most extensive and
  • 00:26:57.240 --> 00:27:01.280
  • exhilirating look at angelic beings of any passage in all
  • 00:27:01.290 --> 00:27:05.170
  • of the scripture.
  • 00:27:05.180 --> 00:27:07.010
  • In Isaiah's vision we see the Lord
  • 00:27:07.020 --> 00:27:09.010
  • high and lifted up in all of his glory and majesty with angels
  • 00:27:09.020 --> 00:27:13.150
  • all around, actively worshipping God around the throne. Now it's
  • 00:27:13.160 --> 00:27:18.190
  • incredible to hear these angels worshipping God and they cried,
  • 00:27:18.200 --> 00:27:22.190
  • "Holy, Holy, Holy," in response to the one that they adore and
  • 00:27:22.200 --> 00:27:27.270
  • yes, we adore. Interesting they didn't cry, "faithful, faithful,
  • 00:27:27.280 --> 00:27:32.280
  • faithful," despite the fact that God is undeniably faithful,
  • 00:27:32.290 --> 00:27:35.170
  • always faithful. Nor did they say, "merciful, merciful,
  • 00:27:35.180 --> 00:27:39.160
  • merciful," even though that is true of our God. They didn't
  • 00:27:39.170 --> 00:27:43.020
  • say, "righteous, righteous," or "just, just," or even, "loving,
  • 00:27:43.030 --> 00:27:46.290
  • loving loving," though God loves you and cares deeply about you.
  • 00:27:47.000 --> 00:27:51.140
  • All of these adjectives could describe our God but in
  • 00:27:51.150 --> 00:27:55.160
  • selecting one word the angels cried out "holy, holy, holy,"
  • 00:27:55.170 --> 00:28:01.020
  • they marked the importance of the holiness of God by repeating
  • 00:28:01.030 --> 00:28:04.220
  • it again and again and again, holy, holy, holy is the Lord of
  • 00:28:04.230 --> 00:28:09.280
  • hosts." This is the God whom the angels revealved to us from this
  • 00:28:09.290 --> 00:28:14.040
  • prophet's heavenly vantage point. This is the God we
  • 00:28:14.050 --> 00:28:18.200
  • praise, this is the one we worship and adore and proclaim
  • 00:28:18.210 --> 00:28:23.170
  • 'till the whole world hears.
  • 00:28:23.180 --> 00:28:24.180
