  • 00:00:06.120 --> 00:00:08.280
  • Welcome to "Live with Passion," I'm Father Cedric Pisegna.
  • 00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:35.270
  • I'm so glad that you've tuned into the program.
  • 00:00:35.270 --> 00:00:38.050
  • I want you to know that I'm preaching about a series
  • 00:00:38.050 --> 00:00:41.100
  • called What Really Matters, and I wanna talk about something
  • 00:00:41.100 --> 00:00:45.220
  • that really matters, and that's our prayer life.
  • 00:00:45.220 --> 00:00:48.130
  • Let me share with you from the gospel of Luke chapter 22.
  • 00:00:48.130 --> 00:00:51.240
  • "Jesus came out, and went, as was His custom,
  • 00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:55.230
  • "to the Mount of Olives.
  • 00:00:55.230 --> 00:00:57.130
  • "His disciples followed Him there,
  • 00:00:57.130 --> 00:00:59.200
  • "and He came to the place where He usually went,
  • 00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:02.060
  • "and He said, 'Pray that you may not enter into temptation.'
  • 00:01:02.060 --> 00:01:07.050
  • "And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw,
  • 00:01:08.180 --> 00:01:10.050
  • "knelt down, and He prayed, 'Father, if you are willing,
  • 00:01:10.050 --> 00:01:12.150
  • "'remove this cup from me.
  • 00:01:12.150 --> 00:01:14.180
  • "'Nevertheless, not my will, but your will be done.'
  • 00:01:14.180 --> 00:01:18.180
  • "And that moment, there appeared to Him an angel from heaven
  • 00:01:18.180 --> 00:01:23.180
  • "who strengthened him," and I love that story,
  • 00:01:24.230 --> 00:01:27.020
  • because it talks so much about prayer,
  • 00:01:27.020 --> 00:01:28.280
  • and I wanna tell you that your prayer life matters.
  • 00:01:28.280 --> 00:01:32.130
  • It's very important to God.
  • 00:01:32.130 --> 00:01:34.040
  • I remember, I went to visit a young man
  • 00:01:34.040 --> 00:01:37.010
  • in the hospital one time.
  • 00:01:37.010 --> 00:01:38.070
  • He had a drug overdose, and he actually
  • 00:01:38.070 --> 00:01:40.250
  • got infected because of the drugs that he was taking,
  • 00:01:40.250 --> 00:01:44.100
  • and he was in the hospital, and he was hooked up
  • 00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:46.280
  • to all these different tubes
  • 00:01:46.280 --> 00:01:48.210
  • and all these different machines,
  • 00:01:48.210 --> 00:01:50.210
  • machines that were keeping him alive,
  • 00:01:50.210 --> 00:01:52.120
  • they were feeding him and giving him the medication
  • 00:01:52.120 --> 00:01:55.130
  • that he needed, and if anyone were to disconnect him
  • 00:01:55.130 --> 00:01:58.170
  • from any of those machines, he would've died.
  • 00:01:58.170 --> 00:02:02.090
  • So in other words, it was vitally important
  • 00:02:02.090 --> 00:02:04.220
  • for this young man to be connected to those machines.
  • 00:02:04.220 --> 00:02:07.040
  • In the same way, it's vitally important for you
  • 00:02:07.040 --> 00:02:10.210
  • to be connected, connected to God,
  • 00:02:10.210 --> 00:02:13.230
  • connected through prayer.
  • 00:02:13.230 --> 00:02:15.140
  • Jesus said, "Abide in me, and I will abide in you."
  • 00:02:15.140 --> 00:02:19.190
  • In other words, He was saying, "Be connected to me,
  • 00:02:19.190 --> 00:02:23.140
  • "stay on the vine, abide in me, remain in me,"
  • 00:02:23.140 --> 00:02:28.140
  • and that's really, really important.
  • 00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:31.050
  • This prayer is so crucial, and I want you to get that.
  • 00:02:31.050 --> 00:02:34.210
  • Don't disconnect from God.
  • 00:02:34.210 --> 00:02:36.260
  • I know, at times, it can be hard,
  • 00:02:36.260 --> 00:02:38.150
  • but don't disconnect from God.
  • 00:02:38.150 --> 00:02:40.230
  • It's vitally important that you pray
  • 00:02:40.230 --> 00:02:43.030
  • and that you pray always, the Scripture says.
  • 00:02:43.030 --> 00:02:46.180
  • So I wanted to share with you a little bit
  • 00:02:46.180 --> 00:02:48.140
  • about what's hanging above my bed.
  • 00:02:48.140 --> 00:02:51.180
  • There's a lithograph that a friend of mine,
  • 00:02:51.180 --> 00:02:54.120
  • she stitched it for me, and it's that scene of Jesus
  • 00:02:54.120 --> 00:02:58.250
  • in the garden, the Garden of Gethsemane.
  • 00:02:58.250 --> 00:03:01.160
  • Now remember what's going on here,
  • 00:03:01.160 --> 00:03:03.030
  • it's the night before He's about to be crucified,
  • 00:03:03.030 --> 00:03:06.080
  • and Jesus is doing what He always did throughout His life,
  • 00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:09.270
  • He prayed, He reached out to God.
  • 00:03:09.270 --> 00:03:13.250
  • Prayer, of course, is communication to God,
  • 00:03:13.250 --> 00:03:18.070
  • but it's also communion with God.
  • 00:03:18.070 --> 00:03:21.100
  • It's communication and it's communion.
  • 00:03:21.100 --> 00:03:24.220
  • We're not just saying things.
  • 00:03:24.220 --> 00:03:26.090
  • We're trying to develop our personal relationship with God.
  • 00:03:26.090 --> 00:03:29.220
  • So here's Jesus, and the lithograph shows it,
  • 00:03:29.220 --> 00:03:32.020
  • He's kneeling, it's in a dark garden,
  • 00:03:32.020 --> 00:03:34.160
  • and at that moment, an angel comes to strengthen Him,
  • 00:03:34.160 --> 00:03:38.260
  • and I love that, because one of the benefits of prayer
  • 00:03:38.260 --> 00:03:43.040
  • is to be comforted, to be strengthened,
  • 00:03:43.040 --> 00:03:47.290
  • to have this help from God, and that's so crucial.
  • 00:03:47.290 --> 00:03:52.170
  • You may not feel it right when you're praying,
  • 00:03:52.170 --> 00:03:56.120
  • but something supernatural happens when we pray,
  • 00:03:56.120 --> 00:03:59.090
  • and we can't always put our finger on it,
  • 00:03:59.090 --> 00:04:01.180
  • but God is at work in our life.
  • 00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:03.280
  • When we invite God in, God is working in our life
  • 00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:06.180
  • to strengthen, to help, to empower us to do
  • 00:04:06.180 --> 00:04:09.150
  • whatever it is that we need to do.
  • 00:04:09.150 --> 00:04:11.120
  • So I love that portrait, and I put it right above my bed,
  • 00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:14.130
  • to always remind me that in the hard times
  • 00:04:14.130 --> 00:04:17.140
  • of life especially, and in the good times,
  • 00:04:17.140 --> 00:04:20.220
  • but especially, remember,
  • 00:04:20.220 --> 00:04:22.200
  • it was Jesus' most desperate moment,
  • 00:04:22.200 --> 00:04:25.110
  • and He turned to prayer.
  • 00:04:25.110 --> 00:04:26.230
  • Even on the cross, He prayed, "Father, forgive them,
  • 00:04:26.230 --> 00:04:29.090
  • "they don't know what they're doing.
  • 00:04:29.090 --> 00:04:30.240
  • "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
  • 00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:32.250
  • So in the midst of His suffering, and I wanna share with you
  • 00:04:32.250 --> 00:04:35.160
  • in the midst of your suffering, even when it doesn't seem
  • 00:04:35.160 --> 00:04:40.160
  • like God's there, even when you feel desolate,
  • 00:04:41.210 --> 00:04:45.030
  • when you have hard things ahead of you,
  • 00:04:46.140 --> 00:04:48.130
  • when life is difficult, turn to God in prayer.
  • 00:04:49.190 --> 00:04:54.080
  • That's why the Scripture says, "Pray always."
  • 00:04:54.080 --> 00:04:56.060
  • Remember, it's vitally important that you stay connected.
  • 00:04:56.060 --> 00:04:59.240
  • A lot of people wanna live on their own,
  • 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:02.120
  • their own independent strength.
  • 00:05:02.120 --> 00:05:04.220
  • They're self-made people.
  • 00:05:04.220 --> 00:05:06.010
  • You can live that way if you want,
  • 00:05:06.010 --> 00:05:07.120
  • but you won't live successfully, you won't have a life
  • 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:10.030
  • of any significance.
  • 00:05:10.030 --> 00:05:11.280
  • You wanna develop your personal relationship with God.
  • 00:05:11.280 --> 00:05:15.240
  • And the Bible is replete with all these different theologies
  • 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:20.240
  • of Lamentations, for example.
  • 00:05:21.200 --> 00:05:23.120
  • Whenever Israel's going through hard times,
  • 00:05:23.120 --> 00:05:26.220
  • Jeremiah and other prophets are always praying to God
  • 00:05:26.220 --> 00:05:29.260
  • for help, for strength, for wisdom, for understanding,
  • 00:05:29.260 --> 00:05:33.260
  • and it's the same way in your life.
  • 00:05:33.260 --> 00:05:35.030
  • The Scriptures teach us how to pray.
  • 00:05:35.030 --> 00:05:37.110
  • I remember the story about Paul the Apostle,
  • 00:05:37.110 --> 00:05:41.020
  • Paul the Apostle, of course, the great missionary,
  • 00:05:41.020 --> 00:05:43.130
  • the great evangelist, he went throughout the modern world
  • 00:05:43.130 --> 00:05:47.040
  • at that time, and proclaimed the gospel
  • 00:05:47.040 --> 00:05:49.170
  • in places where the gospel had never been proclaimed before.
  • 00:05:49.170 --> 00:05:52.170
  • Well, he went through a multitude of sufferings
  • 00:05:52.170 --> 00:05:56.140
  • because of his witness for Jesus Christ,
  • 00:05:56.140 --> 00:05:59.080
  • and one time, he was in Jerusalem,
  • 00:05:59.080 --> 00:06:01.260
  • and they almost tore him to bits.
  • 00:06:01.260 --> 00:06:04.130
  • He was put in prison, and something beautiful happened.
  • 00:06:04.130 --> 00:06:09.100
  • While he was in prison, as he was praying,
  • 00:06:09.100 --> 00:06:13.090
  • the Lord stood by him and told him,
  • 00:06:14.180 --> 00:06:17.190
  • "Paul, take courage," and I love that verse,
  • 00:06:17.190 --> 00:06:22.050
  • "Take Courage."
  • 00:06:22.050 --> 00:06:23.120
  • That's the same thing Jesus said when He came
  • 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:24.230
  • walking to the apostles on the sea.
  • 00:06:24.230 --> 00:06:27.180
  • It was stormy, it was hard,
  • 00:06:27.180 --> 00:06:29.230
  • it was a tough situation for them.
  • 00:06:29.230 --> 00:06:32.000
  • They thought they were gonna die.
  • 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:33.060
  • He said, "Take courage, it is I."
  • 00:06:33.060 --> 00:06:36.110
  • That's one of the insights that you get in prayer.
  • 00:06:36.110 --> 00:06:39.110
  • You can hear the voice of Jesus saying,
  • 00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:43.020
  • "Take Courage, be strong, you can do whatever it is
  • 00:06:43.020 --> 00:06:48.020
  • "that you need to do, don't give up, I am with you,
  • 00:06:49.140 --> 00:06:54.050
  • "I will help you," and so, it's said that,
  • 00:06:55.100 --> 00:06:58.020
  • that Jesus stood by Paul, and that's one of the things
  • 00:07:00.080 --> 00:07:04.210
  • that we come to realize in prayer,
  • 00:07:04.210 --> 00:07:06.170
  • that we're not alone, that God Almighty is standing by us,
  • 00:07:06.170 --> 00:07:11.150
  • and that's so important, that's exactly how Jesus
  • 00:07:13.090 --> 00:07:15.230
  • was helped, by the way, when that angel came
  • 00:07:15.230 --> 00:07:18.170
  • to strengthen Him, it was the fact
  • 00:07:18.170 --> 00:07:21.010
  • that there was an angel there,
  • 00:07:21.010 --> 00:07:23.270
  • and the fact that God is present, God is in our life,
  • 00:07:23.270 --> 00:07:28.200
  • God is right there with us, is empowering, strengthening.
  • 00:07:28.200 --> 00:07:33.200
  • I can't tell you how many times
  • 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:35.200
  • that I've gone through something
  • 00:07:37.090 --> 00:07:38.230
  • and just the fact that God is there
  • 00:07:38.230 --> 00:07:41.280
  • gives me the courage to take the next step,
  • 00:07:41.280 --> 00:07:44.210
  • and you can, too.
  • 00:07:44.210 --> 00:07:46.040
  • There was a song on the radio, I used to love to hear.
  • 00:07:46.040 --> 00:07:49.020
  • It was by Ben E. King, and it's simply entitled,
  • 00:07:49.020 --> 00:07:52.290
  • "Stand by Me" and it goes like this.
  • 00:07:52.290 --> 00:07:55.190
  • When the night has come, and the land is dark,
  • 00:07:55.190 --> 00:08:00.080
  • and the moon is the only light you'll see,
  • 00:08:00.080 --> 00:08:03.220
  • no, I won't be afraid, no, I won't be afraid
  • 00:08:03.220 --> 00:08:08.220
  • just as long as you stand by me.
  • 00:08:09.180 --> 00:08:12.040
  • Wow.
  • 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:13.190
  • As you're watching the program, I want you to know
  • 00:08:13.190 --> 00:08:16.040
  • that Jesus is standing by you.
  • 00:08:16.040 --> 00:08:19.030
  • Now maybe you're going through a night,
  • 00:08:20.150 --> 00:08:23.070
  • the dark night of the soul, grieving,
  • 00:08:23.070 --> 00:08:27.220
  • some anxiety, physical sufferings, growing older.
  • 00:08:27.220 --> 00:08:32.120
  • We all know what night is, we all go through hardships.
  • 00:08:32.120 --> 00:08:36.020
  • We all have difficulties in our life.
  • 00:08:36.020 --> 00:08:38.000
  • Do you sense that He's standing by you right now,
  • 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:42.020
  • that He's right there with you?
  • 00:08:43.080 --> 00:08:45.150
  • And because He's with you, He's always there
  • 00:08:45.150 --> 00:08:48.110
  • to help you, to strengthen you, to empower you.
  • 00:08:48.110 --> 00:08:52.140
  • You see, Jesus knows what it is
  • 00:08:52.140 --> 00:08:54.140
  • to be in a desperate, hard situation.
  • 00:08:54.140 --> 00:08:58.220
  • He was in that situation in the Garden of Gethsemane.
  • 00:08:58.220 --> 00:09:02.250
  • So He knows what you're going through,
  • 00:09:02.250 --> 00:09:05.150
  • He knows how hard life can be, and just like God
  • 00:09:05.150 --> 00:09:09.090
  • stood by Him, He's standing by you right now.
  • 00:09:09.090 --> 00:09:14.020
  • I was recently in Los Angeles.
  • 00:09:15.260 --> 00:09:18.010
  • We have a retreat center there.
  • 00:09:18.010 --> 00:09:20.010
  • It's called Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows,
  • 00:09:20.010 --> 00:09:23.070
  • Our Mother of Sorrows, and I was there
  • 00:09:23.070 --> 00:09:25.190
  • for a big meeting that our community had.
  • 00:09:25.190 --> 00:09:29.130
  • And so, while I was at the monastery,
  • 00:09:29.130 --> 00:09:31.250
  • somebody, through Facebook, found out that I was there,
  • 00:09:31.250 --> 00:09:34.060
  • that watches my TV program, she wanted to meet with me,
  • 00:09:34.060 --> 00:09:37.130
  • and we set up a meeting at the monastery,
  • 00:09:37.130 --> 00:09:40.010
  • and there she came, and turns out that it was a woman
  • 00:09:40.010 --> 00:09:43.070
  • who had not been to church for many years,
  • 00:09:43.070 --> 00:09:45.250
  • going through a hard time in her life,
  • 00:09:47.010 --> 00:09:48.160
  • she watches my program, she likes the encouragement
  • 00:09:48.160 --> 00:09:51.090
  • that I give, and she wanted to go to confession.
  • 00:09:51.090 --> 00:09:54.210
  • She wanted to get right with God and rejoin the church.
  • 00:09:54.210 --> 00:09:58.100
  • We celebrated a very beautiful confession,
  • 00:09:58.100 --> 00:10:01.210
  • and she is now right with the church, and right with God.
  • 00:10:01.210 --> 00:10:04.240
  • She has come back to the church fully.
  • 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:07.030
  • It was a beautiful confession, and as she left,
  • 00:10:07.030 --> 00:10:10.280
  • she gave me a little picture,
  • 00:10:10.280 --> 00:10:13.280
  • and when I saw it, I had seen it before,
  • 00:10:15.040 --> 00:10:17.280
  • but it's a very moving portrait of Jesus
  • 00:10:17.280 --> 00:10:22.160
  • walking on the water, bent over the water,
  • 00:10:22.160 --> 00:10:25.220
  • with His hand submerged into the water,
  • 00:10:25.220 --> 00:10:28.190
  • and the scene is looking up at Jesus
  • 00:10:28.190 --> 00:10:31.250
  • from underneath the water.
  • 00:10:31.250 --> 00:10:34.010
  • So in other words, it's from somebody like Peter,
  • 00:10:34.010 --> 00:10:37.060
  • who is drowning, or maybe somebody like you,
  • 00:10:37.060 --> 00:10:40.280
  • that feels like you're drowning
  • 00:10:40.280 --> 00:10:43.040
  • at a certain point in your life,
  • 00:10:43.040 --> 00:10:45.080
  • and it's looking up at Jesus from underneath,
  • 00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:49.040
  • and as you look up at Jesus,
  • 00:10:49.040 --> 00:10:51.070
  • you see His hand plunged through the water,
  • 00:10:51.070 --> 00:10:55.020
  • reaching out to you and me, with a smile on His face,
  • 00:10:55.020 --> 00:10:59.150
  • because He's in a dangerous situation.
  • 00:10:59.150 --> 00:11:01.280
  • He's walking on the water, He's in the same situation
  • 00:11:01.280 --> 00:11:04.200
  • that the person that's submerged is,
  • 00:11:04.200 --> 00:11:07.250
  • yet, He's the one that can help us,
  • 00:11:07.250 --> 00:11:10.220
  • His hand plunging through the water,
  • 00:11:10.220 --> 00:11:13.230
  • no matter how deep you are,
  • 00:11:13.230 --> 00:11:15.160
  • and no matter what situation you're in.
  • 00:11:16.210 --> 00:11:18.180
  • All He wants is for you to grab a hold of His hand,
  • 00:11:20.010 --> 00:11:22.280
  • and He will raise you up.
  • 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:25.270
  • It's exactly what He did to Peter,
  • 00:11:25.270 --> 00:11:27.200
  • when he got out of the boat, and Peter, of course,
  • 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:30.040
  • he focused on the waves and the wind and the storm
  • 00:11:30.040 --> 00:11:32.260
  • and the hard and the desperation, and you know,
  • 00:11:32.260 --> 00:11:35.220
  • the stuff of life, and he started to sink.
  • 00:11:35.220 --> 00:11:38.150
  • And we can all sink at times, but that's what prayer is.
  • 00:11:38.150 --> 00:11:43.150
  • Prayer is reaching out to the hand
  • 00:11:44.200 --> 00:11:46.250
  • that's reaching out to you. (chuckling)
  • 00:11:46.250 --> 00:11:49.200
  • And you grab a hold of that hand,
  • 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.150
  • and it strengthens you and lifts you up,
  • 00:11:52.150 --> 00:11:56.280
  • and gives you power, and of course, when I talk
  • 00:11:56.280 --> 00:12:00.040
  • about prayer, we're talking about prayer to God.
  • 00:12:00.040 --> 00:12:02.080
  • It's not just prayer of itself.
  • 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:04.220
  • It's who you're praying to.
  • 00:12:04.220 --> 00:12:06.040
  • God is able to help you.
  • 00:12:06.040 --> 00:12:08.120
  • I'm reminded of the story of Father Jim Willig.
  • 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:11.170
  • Father Jim Willig was a priest in Cincinnati, Ohio,
  • 00:12:11.170 --> 00:12:15.120
  • and in his early 40s, he contracted renal cancer.
  • 00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:20.120
  • He ended up passing away at a young age,
  • 00:12:21.180 --> 00:12:23.040
  • but during his bout, and his struggle
  • 00:12:23.040 --> 00:12:26.190
  • with renal cancer, he wrote a book
  • 00:12:26.190 --> 00:12:28.250
  • called "Lessons from the School of Suffering,"
  • 00:12:28.250 --> 00:12:32.250
  • and in that book, he talks about prayer,
  • 00:12:32.250 --> 00:12:34.260
  • and what a comfort, what strength he gained from prayer,
  • 00:12:34.260 --> 00:12:39.090
  • and his words were, "Prayer was the greatest source
  • 00:12:39.090 --> 00:12:43.000
  • "of strength, and his greatest weakness."
  • 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:46.200
  • And he even said this.
  • 00:12:46.200 --> 00:12:48.010
  • "It gave him great consolation," he said that,
  • 00:12:48.010 --> 00:12:50.160
  • "it gave him more relief than the medicines
  • 00:12:50.160 --> 00:12:53.080
  • "from the doctors that he was taking."
  • 00:12:53.080 --> 00:12:55.170
  • I love that, because prayer is better
  • 00:12:55.170 --> 00:12:58.130
  • for us than medicine is.
  • 00:12:58.130 --> 00:13:00.240
  • It can bring healing and grace.
  • 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:03.130
  • The whole point that I'm trying to make here
  • 00:13:03.130 --> 00:13:05.130
  • is that whatever you may be going through,
  • 00:13:05.130 --> 00:13:07.220
  • a physical suffering, a relationship problem,
  • 00:13:07.220 --> 00:13:11.010
  • a trial, an obstacle of some sort,
  • 00:13:11.010 --> 00:13:13.200
  • when you pray to God, there is new power.
  • 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:18.110
  • There is help, there is strength, and the point of prayer
  • 00:13:18.110 --> 00:13:23.110
  • isn't that we were made to live on our own.
  • 00:13:24.160 --> 00:13:27.170
  • The point of prayer is that we would rely
  • 00:13:27.170 --> 00:13:30.130
  • and depend on and lean upon God, who is our strength.
  • 00:13:30.130 --> 00:13:35.130
  • And the beautiful thing about prayer is you don't have to go
  • 00:13:36.270 --> 00:13:39.080
  • to a church to be able to pray.
  • 00:13:39.080 --> 00:13:40.190
  • You can do it right there in your home,
  • 00:13:40.190 --> 00:13:43.050
  • you can do it outside.
  • 00:13:43.050 --> 00:13:44.200
  • That's one of my favorite places to pray, is out of doors,
  • 00:13:44.200 --> 00:13:47.260
  • or you can do it with other people, if you want.
  • 00:13:47.260 --> 00:13:50.250
  • But the bottom line is is that when you do pray,
  • 00:13:50.250 --> 00:13:53.250
  • God hears you, so I'm inviting you
  • 00:13:53.250 --> 00:13:56.280
  • to lean upon God right now, to trust Him,
  • 00:13:56.280 --> 00:14:00.220
  • to depend upon Him.
  • 00:14:00.220 --> 00:14:02.210
  • I remember, years ago, Jesus appeared to a Polish nun,
  • 00:14:02.210 --> 00:14:07.200
  • Sister Faustina, and told her to paint a portrait
  • 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:12.040
  • of the risen Jesus, and underneath, to paint the words,
  • 00:14:12.040 --> 00:14:16.020
  • "Jesus, I trust in you."
  • 00:14:16.020 --> 00:14:18.100
  • And I love that.
  • 00:14:18.100 --> 00:14:19.230
  • I've seen that in so many churches that I go to preach in,
  • 00:14:19.230 --> 00:14:22.040
  • that beautiful, Divine Mercy, devotion,
  • 00:14:22.040 --> 00:14:25.000
  • "Jesus, I trust in you," and I think that's such a word
  • 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.250
  • for our generation, Jesus inviting us to rely upon Him,
  • 00:14:28.250 --> 00:14:33.040
  • to trust in Him, and oftentimes, I don't understand
  • 00:14:33.040 --> 00:14:35.240
  • what's going on in my life.
  • 00:14:35.240 --> 00:14:37.240
  • There will be hard situations and difficulties with people,
  • 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:41.110
  • uncertain future, physical sufferings,
  • 00:14:41.110 --> 00:14:44.120
  • the different things that happen to everybody,
  • 00:14:44.120 --> 00:14:46.120
  • and what I like to pray is I go into my room,
  • 00:14:46.120 --> 00:14:49.030
  • and I pray, "Jesus, I trust in you.
  • 00:14:49.030 --> 00:14:51.120
  • "I don't understand, but I trust in you."
  • 00:14:51.120 --> 00:14:54.250
  • So trust begs unanswered questions,
  • 00:14:54.250 --> 00:14:58.060
  • and when we come to Jesus in prayer,
  • 00:14:58.060 --> 00:15:00.240
  • really, what we're doing is we're trusting in Him,
  • 00:15:00.240 --> 00:15:04.000
  • and I invite you to do that right now,
  • 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.010
  • to give your heart to the Lord, to trust in Him,
  • 00:15:06.010 --> 00:15:08.270
  • no matter what you're going through.
  • 00:15:08.270 --> 00:15:10.240
  • So I want you to stay connected,
  • 00:15:10.240 --> 00:15:13.170
  • and one of the ways that we can stay connected,
  • 00:15:13.170 --> 00:15:15.200
  • the Bible actually tells us to pray always.
  • 00:15:15.200 --> 00:15:19.160
  • We can't be always praying, but if we're somehow
  • 00:15:19.160 --> 00:15:23.170
  • trying to be aware that Jesus is with us,
  • 00:15:23.170 --> 00:15:26.180
  • even when we go through difficulties,
  • 00:15:26.180 --> 00:15:29.050
  • one of the ways we stay connected is simply by speaking,
  • 00:15:29.050 --> 00:15:33.080
  • speaking words out of our mouth.
  • 00:15:33.080 --> 00:15:35.170
  • Prayer doesn't have to be real long or very verbose
  • 00:15:35.170 --> 00:15:40.060
  • or have all these fancy words or Old English.
  • 00:15:40.060 --> 00:15:44.110
  • Just speak from your heart, little short sayings.
  • 00:15:44.110 --> 00:15:47.160
  • Saint Paul of the Cross, founder of the Passionists,
  • 00:15:47.160 --> 00:15:49.290
  • he called them ejaculations.
  • 00:15:49.290 --> 00:15:51.250
  • You just say things like, "Jesus, I trust in you,
  • 00:15:51.250 --> 00:15:54.190
  • "Jesus, I love you, Jesus, I know that you're with me,
  • 00:15:56.020 --> 00:16:00.070
  • "Jesus, I know that you're risen from the dead,
  • 00:16:01.180 --> 00:16:04.280
  • "Jesus, I know that you go before me,
  • 00:16:04.280 --> 00:16:07.100
  • "Jesus, I know that you are gonna help me,"
  • 00:16:07.100 --> 00:16:09.210
  • and I always like to say the name Jesus.
  • 00:16:09.210 --> 00:16:12.140
  • You know, there's no other name
  • 00:16:12.140 --> 00:16:14.040
  • by which people can be saved.
  • 00:16:14.040 --> 00:16:16.070
  • That comes right from the Scriptures,
  • 00:16:16.070 --> 00:16:17.250
  • from Acts of the Apostles.
  • 00:16:17.250 --> 00:16:19.190
  • The name of Jesus is so important.
  • 00:16:19.190 --> 00:16:22.280
  • That's the name that the angel Gabriel gave
  • 00:16:22.280 --> 00:16:25.240
  • to Joseph and Mary.
  • 00:16:25.240 --> 00:16:27.280
  • The word, the name Jesus means God saves.
  • 00:16:27.280 --> 00:16:32.280
  • And so that name is precious.
  • 00:16:33.240 --> 00:16:35.110
  • People are healed in the name of Jesus.
  • 00:16:35.110 --> 00:16:38.070
  • People come to eternal life in the name of Jesus.
  • 00:16:38.070 --> 00:16:41.270
  • So the name of Jesus is really important.
  • 00:16:41.270 --> 00:16:44.020
  • We don't just tack it on at the end of the prayer,
  • 00:16:44.020 --> 00:16:45.200
  • and say, "In Jesus' name, I pray."
  • 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:47.160
  • Rather, it's that precious, powerful,
  • 00:16:47.160 --> 00:16:51.280
  • I live at a retreat center called Holy Name Retreat Center.
  • 00:16:51.280 --> 00:16:55.280
  • It's a precious, holy, powerful name.
  • 00:16:55.280 --> 00:17:01.000
  • I remember, in the Scriptures, Bartimaeus,
  • 00:17:02.030 --> 00:17:03.150
  • the blind man, one of the only ones who ever
  • 00:17:03.150 --> 00:17:06.030
  • called out the name of Jesus, Bartimaeus cries out,
  • 00:17:06.030 --> 00:17:09.120
  • "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me,"
  • 00:17:09.120 --> 00:17:11.150
  • and Jesus stopped.
  • 00:17:11.150 --> 00:17:13.180
  • See, Jesus responded to His own name.
  • 00:17:13.180 --> 00:17:15.290
  • Another person in the Scriptures that called out
  • 00:17:15.290 --> 00:17:19.180
  • the name of Jesus, remember the thief
  • 00:17:19.180 --> 00:17:21.120
  • that was crucified with Jesus?
  • 00:17:21.120 --> 00:17:23.110
  • He's there on the cross, and he looks at Him,
  • 00:17:24.150 --> 00:17:25.260
  • and he says, "Jesus, remember me
  • 00:17:25.260 --> 00:17:28.110
  • "when you come into your kingdom."
  • 00:17:28.110 --> 00:17:30.100
  • Wow.
  • 00:17:30.100 --> 00:17:31.260
  • And Jesus answered, Jesus answered the prayer
  • 00:17:31.260 --> 00:17:34.120
  • of a thief being executed,
  • 00:17:34.120 --> 00:17:37.080
  • Jesus answered the prayer of a blind man,
  • 00:17:38.120 --> 00:17:41.170
  • when everybody was telling him to shut up.
  • 00:17:41.170 --> 00:17:44.150
  • How much more will Jesus answer your prayer
  • 00:17:44.150 --> 00:17:47.150
  • when you call on Him by name?
  • 00:17:47.150 --> 00:17:50.090
  • So just simply pray throughout the day,
  • 00:17:50.090 --> 00:17:53.220
  • Jesus, I believe in you, Jesus, I love you,
  • 00:17:53.220 --> 00:17:58.220
  • Jesus, you're with me,
  • 00:17:59.140 --> 00:18:01.040
  • Jesus, thank you that you're there for me,
  • 00:18:01.040 --> 00:18:03.190
  • Jesus, I know that you're gonna take me through,
  • 00:18:03.190 --> 00:18:06.100
  • Master, you are glorious.
  • 00:18:06.100 --> 00:18:09.070
  • In the catechism, this is the Catholic catechism,
  • 00:18:09.070 --> 00:18:13.250
  • they talk about prayer in many different ways.
  • 00:18:13.250 --> 00:18:16.280
  • In fact, there's a whole section dedicated
  • 00:18:16.280 --> 00:18:19.030
  • to pray in the Catholic catechism.
  • 00:18:19.030 --> 00:18:21.070
  • And it talks about how prayer is a battle. (chuckling)
  • 00:18:21.070 --> 00:18:24.230
  • Let's talk about that for a minute,
  • 00:18:24.230 --> 00:18:25.290
  • because I want you to understand,
  • 00:18:25.290 --> 00:18:27.140
  • and I think you already know, that it's not easy.
  • 00:18:27.140 --> 00:18:29.080
  • That's why Jesus would always give these parables
  • 00:18:29.080 --> 00:18:32.040
  • about prayer, He'd say, "Be persistent, and keep at it,
  • 00:18:32.040 --> 00:18:36.020
  • "and don't give up, and if an unjust judge
  • 00:18:36.020 --> 00:18:40.020
  • "would answer the prayer of a widow,
  • 00:18:40.020 --> 00:18:42.070
  • "knocking at his door, how much more will your Father,
  • 00:18:42.070 --> 00:18:46.000
  • "who is a just judge, answer your prayer,
  • 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:48.070
  • "as long as you don't give up?"
  • 00:18:48.070 --> 00:18:49.210
  • So Jesus understood that prayer can get hard to do at times,
  • 00:18:49.210 --> 00:18:54.200
  • and there are difficulties, and it doesn't seem
  • 00:18:56.000 --> 00:18:58.040
  • like God's there at times,
  • 00:18:58.040 --> 00:18:59.150
  • but He said to be persistent, and to keep at it.
  • 00:18:59.150 --> 00:19:02.260
  • So the catechism talked about prayer
  • 00:19:02.260 --> 00:19:04.180
  • as being a battle, and it talked about,
  • 00:19:04.180 --> 00:19:06.140
  • there are distractions, there are temptations,
  • 00:19:06.140 --> 00:19:11.010
  • there's dryness.
  • 00:19:11.010 --> 00:19:12.240
  • Sometimes, we don't have the comforting feelings.
  • 00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:16.020
  • We don't always feel like we wanna pray.
  • 00:19:16.020 --> 00:19:18.010
  • It's easier just to sit there and watch TV.
  • 00:19:18.010 --> 00:19:20.150
  • I feel empty, I feel like God's not there.
  • 00:19:20.150 --> 00:19:23.190
  • Well, in the midst of all those feelings and distractions
  • 00:19:23.190 --> 00:19:26.180
  • and temptations, I wanna tell you that God is there.
  • 00:19:26.180 --> 00:19:31.180
  • Prayer is a battle, it can be hard,
  • 00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:35.180
  • but I want you to keep at it.
  • 00:19:35.180 --> 00:19:37.060
  • I wanna tell you the story about Exodus,
  • 00:19:37.060 --> 00:19:40.000
  • the book of Exodus, chapter 17,
  • 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:43.170
  • the Hebrews had just made their long journey
  • 00:19:43.170 --> 00:19:47.220
  • from Egypt into the Promised Land,
  • 00:19:47.220 --> 00:19:50.150
  • but lo and behold, they get to the Promised Land,
  • 00:19:50.150 --> 00:19:54.090
  • and there's all these different tribes there,
  • 00:19:54.090 --> 00:19:56.200
  • coming against them, that didn't want them
  • 00:19:56.200 --> 00:19:59.210
  • to enter their land, and one of the tribes
  • 00:19:59.210 --> 00:20:03.020
  • were the Amalekites, and so, the Hebrews
  • 00:20:03.020 --> 00:20:06.040
  • got into a big battle with the Amalekites,
  • 00:20:06.040 --> 00:20:08.070
  • trying to get into the Promised Land,
  • 00:20:08.070 --> 00:20:10.000
  • and isn't that the way it is in our life,
  • 00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:11.180
  • as we're going on in our journey,
  • 00:20:11.180 --> 00:20:13.070
  • trying to live our destiny, the plan that we believe
  • 00:20:13.070 --> 00:20:16.170
  • that God has for our life, we face the Amalekites,
  • 00:20:16.170 --> 00:20:20.000
  • and who are the Amalekites?
  • 00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:21.150
  • You know, it could be health problems, as I was saying,
  • 00:20:21.150 --> 00:20:24.250
  • or grieving or neighbors.
  • 00:20:24.250 --> 00:20:27.260
  • So they're facing the Amalekites, they get into the battle,
  • 00:20:27.260 --> 00:20:30.000
  • and Moses goes up to the mountaintop,
  • 00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:32.250
  • and he overlooks the battle scene,
  • 00:20:32.250 --> 00:20:35.120
  • he's there with his brother, Aaron,
  • 00:20:35.120 --> 00:20:37.050
  • another man named Hur, and as they're watching the battle,
  • 00:20:37.050 --> 00:20:41.020
  • whenever Moses had his hands raised,
  • 00:20:41.020 --> 00:20:44.120
  • of course you know what that means,
  • 00:20:44.120 --> 00:20:45.250
  • whenever he's praying, the Hebrews were winning the battle,
  • 00:20:45.250 --> 00:20:49.090
  • but Moses got tired and so do we, when we're praying,
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:53.140
  • and the hands would droop down,
  • 00:20:53.140 --> 00:20:55.200
  • and whenever the hands were down,
  • 00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:57.110
  • they would lose the battle.
  • 00:20:57.110 --> 00:20:59.110
  • So what happened was, his brother, Aaron,
  • 00:20:59.110 --> 00:21:03.040
  • took one of the hands, Hur took the other hand,
  • 00:21:03.040 --> 00:21:06.210
  • they held them up, and as they were holding up his hands,
  • 00:21:06.210 --> 00:21:10.220
  • the Hebrews won the battle,
  • 00:21:10.220 --> 00:21:13.150
  • and I love that allusion to prayer
  • 00:21:13.150 --> 00:21:15.060
  • because it tells me that number one,
  • 00:21:15.060 --> 00:21:18.170
  • you can pray alone when you have your hands up
  • 00:21:18.170 --> 00:21:20.270
  • and it'll work, but oftentimes, the support of the community
  • 00:21:20.270 --> 00:21:25.270
  • holding up our hands is very important.
  • 00:21:27.020 --> 00:21:29.210
  • That's one of the reasons why the Scriptures tell us,
  • 00:21:29.210 --> 00:21:31.180
  • don't go off on your own.
  • 00:21:31.180 --> 00:21:34.130
  • Rather, gather together, gather together with others.
  • 00:21:34.130 --> 00:21:38.040
  • To me, when I go to church,
  • 00:21:38.040 --> 00:21:40.010
  • whatever denomination you attend,
  • 00:21:40.010 --> 00:21:41.220
  • the music, the community, the others praying,
  • 00:21:41.220 --> 00:21:46.220
  • it really helps.
  • 00:21:47.110 --> 00:21:48.260
  • If you're not going to church, we miss your presence,
  • 00:21:48.260 --> 00:21:53.260
  • and your presence in the assembly, your participation
  • 00:21:55.080 --> 00:21:58.220
  • helps everybody to pray.
  • 00:21:58.220 --> 00:22:01.050
  • So prayer is a battle, it is hard,
  • 00:22:01.050 --> 00:22:04.040
  • but more than anything else, I wanna tell you,
  • 00:22:04.040 --> 00:22:06.260
  • it's a time of gentleness and tenderness
  • 00:22:06.260 --> 00:22:11.230
  • and intimacy with God.
  • 00:22:12.150 --> 00:22:14.050
  • There's a beautiful story in Mark chapter 8,
  • 00:22:14.050 --> 00:22:17.010
  • Jesus meets a blind man, and He takes him out of the village
  • 00:22:17.010 --> 00:22:22.010
  • to an undisclosed place.
  • 00:22:22.230 --> 00:22:24.060
  • It was at Bethsaida, and get this,
  • 00:22:24.060 --> 00:22:26.190
  • takes him by the hand, picture the scene.
  • 00:22:26.190 --> 00:22:30.050
  • Here's Jesus walking with this blind man,
  • 00:22:30.050 --> 00:22:33.080
  • holding his hand, brings him out of the village,
  • 00:22:33.080 --> 00:22:36.250
  • then He spits on his eyes, touches his eyes,
  • 00:22:36.250 --> 00:22:40.160
  • and He says, "Do you see anything?"
  • 00:22:40.160 --> 00:22:42.190
  • And the blind man said, "Well, I see people,
  • 00:22:42.190 --> 00:22:44.230
  • "but they look like trees."
  • 00:22:44.230 --> 00:22:46.110
  • And then, He touched his eyes again, and he came
  • 00:22:46.110 --> 00:22:48.270
  • to see the people clearly.
  • 00:22:48.270 --> 00:22:50.240
  • What I want you to get is that this is what prayer is.
  • 00:22:50.240 --> 00:22:54.140
  • Jesus holding your hand, and walking with you,
  • 00:22:54.140 --> 00:22:59.140
  • no matter where you are, in this stage of your life,
  • 00:23:00.280 --> 00:23:03.030
  • He's holding your hand and walking with you.
  • 00:23:03.030 --> 00:23:05.250
  • And prayer is a gradual process of awakening.
  • 00:23:05.250 --> 00:23:10.070
  • Blindness, in the Scripture always refers
  • 00:23:10.070 --> 00:23:12.070
  • to something physical, but it always refers
  • 00:23:12.070 --> 00:23:14.050
  • to something spiritual, and so,
  • 00:23:14.050 --> 00:23:16.190
  • prayer is a gradual awakening of intimacy with God,
  • 00:23:16.190 --> 00:23:21.190
  • God walking with us, God close to us, being our friend.
  • 00:23:23.000 --> 00:23:26.200
  • I love what it says in Psalm 139.
  • 00:23:27.240 --> 00:23:30.010
  • Whenever we sit or when we stand, God knows it altogether.
  • 00:23:30.010 --> 00:23:33.020
  • That's how close God is to us.
  • 00:23:33.020 --> 00:23:35.020
  • All the hair on our head is counted by God,
  • 00:23:35.020 --> 00:23:38.000
  • so that means that God is near to us,
  • 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:40.100
  • God is close to us, and then, I love what it says
  • 00:23:40.100 --> 00:23:43.190
  • in Psalm 125, "As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
  • 00:23:43.190 --> 00:23:47.190
  • "so the Lord surrounds His people,"
  • 00:23:47.190 --> 00:23:50.150
  • and so, as we come to a conclusion,
  • 00:23:50.150 --> 00:23:53.000
  • I want you to sense that you can pray deeply,
  • 00:23:53.000 --> 00:23:57.030
  • God hears your prayers, He surrounds you,
  • 00:23:57.030 --> 00:24:00.090
  • He holds your hand, and He wants to give you help,
  • 00:24:00.090 --> 00:24:03.210
  • strength and power.
  • 00:24:03.210 --> 00:24:06.040
  • Don't just live, live with passion.
  • 00:24:06.040 --> 00:24:08.110
  • (inspirational music)
  • 00:24:08.110 --> 00:24:10.170
  • I hope you liked my message about prayer.
  • 00:24:10.170 --> 00:24:12.250
  • Prayer is so vitally important.
  • 00:24:12.250 --> 00:24:14.260
  • It really does connect you with God,
  • 00:24:14.260 --> 00:24:16.260
  • in communication and communion.
  • 00:24:16.260 --> 00:24:20.040
  • I received a letter from a woman in Illinois,
  • 00:24:20.040 --> 00:24:23.230
  • and she said, "Thank you, Father Cedric,
  • 00:24:23.230 --> 00:24:26.090
  • "for your programs.
  • 00:24:26.090 --> 00:24:28.000
  • "Because of your teaching, I have found Jesus again."
  • 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:32.250
  • Oh, that is exactly why I have
  • 00:24:32.250 --> 00:24:36.210
  • "Live with Passion" on television.
  • 00:24:36.210 --> 00:24:38.260
  • I want you to find Jesus again,
  • 00:24:38.260 --> 00:24:41.190
  • and that's exactly what prayer does.
  • 00:24:41.190 --> 00:24:43.160
  • It helps you to grasp His hand,
  • 00:24:43.160 --> 00:24:46.090
  • and He grasps your hand,
  • 00:24:46.090 --> 00:24:48.110
  • and you can have intimacy with Jesus
  • 00:24:48.110 --> 00:24:51.130
  • and I wrote a book called "The Sacred Quest,"
  • 00:24:51.130 --> 00:24:55.170
  • all about prayer, and in this book,
  • 00:24:55.170 --> 00:24:57.290
  • I talk about how Jesus prayed, and I believe
  • 00:24:57.290 --> 00:25:01.190
  • that if you can understand how Jesus prayed,
  • 00:25:01.190 --> 00:25:05.060
  • that you can pray even better in your life.
  • 00:25:05.060 --> 00:25:08.060
  • But the whole goal of prayer isn't just to pray
  • 00:25:08.060 --> 00:25:10.210
  • as Jesus prayed, it's to have communion with the Father,
  • 00:25:10.210 --> 00:25:15.190
  • to have communion with Jesus,
  • 00:25:15.190 --> 00:25:17.220
  • to have communion with the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:25:17.220 --> 00:25:19.080
  • So prayer really does lead
  • 00:25:19.080 --> 00:25:20.200
  • to a personal relationship with God.
  • 00:25:20.200 --> 00:25:24.110
  • So I invite you to order this book on prayer,
  • 00:25:24.110 --> 00:25:26.190
  • and I want you to know that whenever you purchase

  • or that book on prayer, "The Sacred Quest,"
  • 00:25:33.120 --> 00:25:36.190
  • whenever you purchase my resources,
  • 00:25:36.190 --> 00:25:38.080
  • it supports me for staying on television,
  • 00:25:38.080 --> 00:25:41.110
