  • 00:00:19.000 --> 00:00:26.290
  • 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.020
  • Kerry: The most famous fountain in the world is
  • 00:00:31.210 --> 00:00:33.220
  • probably the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
  • 00:00:33.230 --> 00:00:37.290
  • This baroque fountain attracts tourists from all over the world
  • 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:42.060
  • each year because of its beauty and its legend.
  • 00:00:42.070 --> 00:00:46.230
  • And the legend of the Trevi Fountain says that if you turn
  • 00:00:46.240 --> 00:00:50.110
  • your back to the fountain and take a coin in your right hand,
  • 00:00:50.120 --> 00:00:54.090
  • throw it over your left shoulder and it lands into the fountain,
  • 00:00:54.100 --> 00:00:58.010
  • then it guarantees you a return trip to the Eternal City.
  • 00:00:58.020 --> 00:01:02.250
  • Now, I'm not sure if that works or not,
  • 00:01:02.260 --> 00:01:05.070
  • but I do know what would work.
  • 00:01:05.080 --> 00:01:07.110
  • If you collected all the coins in the fountain,
  • 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:10.100
  • you'd have enough money for a return trip to Rome because the
  • 00:01:10.110 --> 00:01:14.150
  • officials there collect the equivalent of $10.000 in change
  • 00:01:14.160 --> 00:01:19.130
  • every 2 days, which equals $1.2 million every year,
  • 00:01:19.140 --> 00:01:25.220
  • which is given to charity, which is a good thing.
  • 00:01:25.230 --> 00:01:29.000
  • But there's another legend with the Trevi Fountain, and
  • 00:01:29.010 --> 00:01:31.090
  • that is if you take two coins and throw 'em over your left
  • 00:01:31.100 --> 00:01:34.060
  • shoulder, then you're guaranteed to fall in love that year.
  • 00:01:34.070 --> 00:01:37.200
  • And if you take three coins and throw 'em over
  • 00:01:37.210 --> 00:01:40.000
  • your left shoulder, if you're single, you're
  • 00:01:40.010 --> 00:01:42.050
  • guaranteed to get married.
  • 00:01:42.060 --> 00:01:44.020
  • If you're married, you're guaranteed to get divorced.
  • 00:01:44.030 --> 00:01:47.060
  • It's really true.
  • 00:01:47.070 --> 00:01:49.240
  • So, when you see someone throwing three coins over their
  • 00:01:49.250 --> 00:01:52.150
  • shoulder, you just never know what they're meaning by it.
  • 00:01:52.160 --> 00:01:57.020
  • Well, we're starting a new series that
  • 00:01:57.030 --> 00:01:59.280
  • we're calling "Fountains."
  • 00:01:59.290 --> 00:02:01.170
  • As we kick off the summer, we're gonna be talking about quenching
  • 00:02:01.180 --> 00:02:05.070
  • your thirst for God because there's something about
  • 00:02:05.080 --> 00:02:08.100
  • fountains in almost every culture that draws us in,
  • 00:02:08.110 --> 00:02:13.070
  • and it connects us to our deepest wishes and longings,
  • 00:02:13.080 --> 00:02:18.180
  • and that's because we're all searching for God.
  • 00:02:18.190 --> 00:02:23.040
  • You see, our search for meaning, fulfillment,
  • 00:02:23.050 --> 00:02:27.080
  • for love, for joy, for peace is really just a search for God.
  • 00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:31.250
  • Even our sinning is really a misguided search for God.
  • 00:02:31.260 --> 00:02:36.080
  • It's drinking from a polluted pool of sin and selfishness when
  • 00:02:36.090 --> 00:02:43.010
  • our hearts are really longing for that fountain of
  • 00:02:43.020 --> 00:02:48.060
  • life that's found in God alone.
  • 00:02:48.070 --> 00:02:51.240
  • And so, in this series, we're gonna learn what it means to
  • 00:02:51.250 --> 00:02:55.030
  • quench our deepest thirsts.
  • 00:02:55.040 --> 00:02:58.280
  • Almost 100 years ago, G.K. Chesterton wrote: "Every man who
  • 00:02:58.290 --> 00:03:03.050
  • knocks on the door of a brothel is really looking for God."
  • 00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:07.120
  • If he were writing today, he would say, "Every man who
  • 00:03:07.130 --> 00:03:10.150
  • surfs the web for porn is really searching for God."
  • 00:03:10.160 --> 00:03:15.010
  • Or, "Every woman who constantly posts selfies and then keeps
  • 00:03:15.020 --> 00:03:18.280
  • looking back to see how many likes she gets is really looking
  • 00:03:18.290 --> 00:03:24.180
  • for God's approval and acceptance."
  • 00:03:24.190 --> 00:03:28.080
  • Or, "The teenager who parties every weekend and uses alcohol
  • 00:03:28.090 --> 00:03:30.210
  • to drown out the pain is really searching for God
  • 00:03:30.220 --> 00:03:34.290
  • to fill the hole in his heart."
  • 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:37.170
  • Or, "The workaholic who's running on the treadmill of
  • 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:40.190
  • success after success after success is really running after
  • 00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:44.070
  • God and God's ultimate significance.
  • 00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:50.010
  • I want us to open our Bibles to John chapter 7,
  • 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:53.140
  • because here we see Jesus come to Jerusalem to celebrate a
  • 00:03:53.150 --> 00:03:57.080
  • festival called "The Festival of the Tabernacle."
  • 00:03:57.090 --> 00:03:59.290
  • And it was an eight-day festival, and for the first
  • 00:04:00.020 --> 00:04:02.010
  • seven days, the people would live in tents and booths and
  • 00:04:02.020 --> 00:04:05.020
  • temporary places to show how they lived in the wilderness
  • 00:04:05.030 --> 00:04:10.070
  • before God worked the miracle to bring
  • 00:04:10.080 --> 00:04:12.120
  • them to the Promised Land.
  • 00:04:12.130 --> 00:04:14.010
  • And every day, for the first seven days,
  • 00:04:14.020 --> 00:04:15.250
  • the priest would take water out of the Pool of Siloam and then
  • 00:04:15.260 --> 00:04:18.210
  • bring it and pour it onto the altar to remind them of how God
  • 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:21.240
  • had worked a miracle to quench their thirst in the desert.
  • 00:04:21.250 --> 00:04:26.290
  • And so, we see here Jesus on the eighth
  • 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:30.170
  • day of the feast stand up.
  • 00:04:30.180 --> 00:04:33.260
  • Now, it's interesting that it was the eighth day because on
  • 00:04:33.270 --> 00:04:37.280
  • the eighth day, the people wouldn't live in the temporary
  • 00:04:37.290 --> 00:04:40.000
  • places anymore in the tents.
  • 00:04:40.010 --> 00:04:41.120
  • They would go back to their houses to represent that now
  • 00:04:41.130 --> 00:04:43.190
  • they're in the Promised Land.
  • 00:04:43.200 --> 00:04:45.230
  • And on the eighth day, they wouldn't pour water out.
  • 00:04:45.240 --> 00:04:50.010
  • They would pray for water because they're
  • 00:04:50.020 --> 00:04:53.140
  • now in the Promised Land.
  • 00:04:53.150 --> 00:04:56.100
  • And so this was the last day of the big festival.
  • 00:04:56.110 --> 00:04:59.010
  • So would you stand in honor of God's Word?
  • 00:04:59.020 --> 00:05:01.150
  • As we see Jesus stand up on the last day of the
  • 00:05:01.160 --> 00:05:04.060
  • festival, and he says this.
  • 00:05:04.070 --> 00:05:06.140
  • And I want to welcome all you guys who are worshiping with us
  • 00:05:06.150 --> 00:05:08.260
  • through our satellite campuses and our online and broadcast
  • 00:05:08.270 --> 00:05:11.290
  • ministry, wherever you are around the world.
  • 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.130
  • You are welcome. We're part of one church.
  • 00:05:14.140 --> 00:05:17.160
  • And so, I believe with all my heart Jesus wasn't just saying
  • 00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:20.060
  • this to those people at the festival.
  • 00:05:20.070 --> 00:05:23.120
  • He was saying this to you.
  • 00:05:23.130 --> 00:05:25.290
  • He's saying this to you today.
  • 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.210
  • So, listen to his words.
  • 00:05:28.220 --> 00:05:31.120
  • "On the last and greatest day of the festival,
  • 00:05:31.130 --> 00:05:33.230
  • Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,
  • 00:05:33.240 --> 00:05:37.000
  • 'Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
  • 00:05:37.010 --> 00:05:40.110
  • Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,
  • 00:05:40.120 --> 00:05:42.240
  • rivers of living water will flow from within them."
  • 00:05:42.250 --> 00:05:47.060
  • You can be seated.
  • 00:05:47.070 --> 00:05:48.180
  • And I want you to underline the phrase,
  • 00:05:48.190 --> 00:05:49.280
  • "Jesus stood and said in a loud voice."
  • 00:05:49.290 --> 00:05:52.190
  • I love that because it shows me Jesus isn't trying to hide the
  • 00:05:52.200 --> 00:05:59.110
  • fact that he is the Living Water.
  • 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:02.010
  • He's not trying to hide the secret to life.
  • 00:06:02.020 --> 00:06:04.210
  • He's not hard to find.
  • 00:06:04.220 --> 00:06:07.090
  • He wanted everyone to know that he was the one that could quench
  • 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:10.270
  • their deepest thirst, that he was the Fountain of Life,
  • 00:06:10.280 --> 00:06:14.200
  • and he wants you to know that.
  • 00:06:14.210 --> 00:06:16.230
  • Some people think that God is always trying to hide his
  • 00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:19.260
  • secrets, and that God just watches us,
  • 00:06:19.270 --> 00:06:24.070
  • and we go from stagnant pool to cesspool and,
  • 00:06:24.080 --> 00:06:30.090
  • you know, polluted pool, and always trying to have our thirst
  • 00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:34.110
  • quenched, and it never satisfies.
  • 00:06:34.120 --> 00:06:36.200
  • But God says, "Well, you gotta work really hard to find me,
  • 00:06:36.210 --> 00:06:40.070
  • to find the ultimate satisfaction.
  • 00:06:40.080 --> 00:06:42.170
  • If you work really hard and you live perfectly,
  • 00:06:42.180 --> 00:06:46.040
  • then you'll find me."
  • 00:06:46.050 --> 00:06:48.120
  • But that's not the truth at all.
  • 00:06:48.130 --> 00:06:51.000
  • God is calling out to all of us, saying,
  • 00:06:51.010 --> 00:06:53.210
  • "I put deep desires and longings in your heart.
  • 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:56.230
  • I put that thirst in your soul, and I'm the only one that can
  • 00:06:56.240 --> 00:07:00.080
  • quench it, for I am the Fountain of Life."
  • 00:07:00.090 --> 00:07:05.270
  • And so we see that Jesus stands up on the last day of the last
  • 00:07:05.280 --> 00:07:09.290
  • festival he would attend in Jerusalem until
  • 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:13.080
  • the Passover of his death.
  • 00:07:13.090 --> 00:07:15.010
  • And on the last day of the last festival,
  • 00:07:15.020 --> 00:07:17.240
  • at the last moment, the last time most of these people would
  • 00:07:17.250 --> 00:07:22.170
  • hear him speak, what does he do?
  • 00:07:22.180 --> 00:07:25.270
  • He yells out.
  • 00:07:25.280 --> 00:07:27.100
  • He wants them all to know, "Come to me,
  • 00:07:27.110 --> 00:07:30.070
  • the Fountain of Life, and you will never thirst again.
  • 00:07:30.080 --> 00:07:34.090
  • I am the Fountain of Life."
  • 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:36.080
  • So I wanna break this down, and I put in bold the first thing he
  • 00:07:36.090 --> 00:07:40.190
  • said, "Let anyone who is thirsty," this is so crucial.
  • 00:07:40.200 --> 00:07:44.000
  • "Let anyone who is thirsty.
  • 00:07:44.010 --> 00:07:45.170
  • Jesus says, "I am the fountain that can quench your deepest
  • 00:07:45.180 --> 00:07:48.010
  • thirst, and it's for anyone."
  • 00:07:48.020 --> 00:07:50.200
  • So it's for--he doesn't exclude anyone.
  • 00:07:50.210 --> 00:07:55.000
  • You could be any socioeconomic level.
  • 00:07:55.010 --> 00:07:57.030
  • You could be any race, come from any background.
  • 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:00.040
  • He doesn't exclude anyone.
  • 00:08:00.050 --> 00:08:02.100
  • He says, "Anyone."
  • 00:08:02.110 --> 00:08:05.190
  • He didn't say, "It's for all those of you who are moral.
  • 00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:10.150
  • It's for all those of you who aren't stuck in sin."
  • 00:08:10.160 --> 00:08:14.200
  • No, he says, "For anyone."
  • 00:08:14.210 --> 00:08:16.100
  • He was saying, "And it doesn't matter how much you've sinned.
  • 00:08:16.110 --> 00:08:18.170
  • It doesn't matter how moral you've lived.
  • 00:08:18.180 --> 00:08:21.190
  • It doesn't matter--it's for anyone," except he puts one
  • 00:08:21.200 --> 00:08:24.070
  • condition on it, and this is a very important condition:
  • 00:08:24.080 --> 00:08:27.010
  • "Let anyone who is thirsty."
  • 00:08:27.020 --> 00:08:30.270
  • He's saying, "The Living Water's for anyone who is thirsty."
  • 00:08:30.280 --> 00:08:35.150
  • Jesus says, "I am the Fountain that can
  • 00:08:35.160 --> 00:08:37.040
  • quench your deepest thirst."
  • 00:08:37.050 --> 00:08:38.210
  • But the condition is, are you thirsty?
  • 00:08:38.220 --> 00:08:40.110
  • Do you realize how thirsty you are?
  • 00:08:40.120 --> 00:08:42.220
  • He doesn't say, "It's for those who can get their act together.
  • 00:08:42.230 --> 00:08:46.050
  • It's for those who can follow are the do's and don'ts.
  • 00:08:46.060 --> 00:08:48.270
  • It's for those who really live a moral life."
  • 00:08:48.280 --> 00:08:52.120
  • No, he says, "It's for anyone who's thirsty."
  • 00:08:52.130 --> 00:08:53.250
  • So, are you thirsty, and what are you really thirsting for?
  • 00:08:53.260 --> 00:08:58.180
  • You see, I feel like a lot of people have lost
  • 00:08:58.190 --> 00:09:00.230
  • touch with their thirst.
  • 00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:03.080
  • They don't realize that they're thirsty.
  • 00:09:03.090 --> 00:09:07.000
  • They've been playin' around in these polluted pools for so long
  • 00:09:07.010 --> 00:09:11.000
  • that they don't realize how thirsty they really are.
  • 00:09:11.010 --> 00:09:14.160
  • They just know that they're empty.
  • 00:09:14.170 --> 00:09:16.210
  • They just know that they're not satisfied,
  • 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:18.180
  • but they don't even know what their real thirsts are,
  • 00:09:18.190 --> 00:09:23.050
  • what they're really thirsty for.
  • 00:09:23.060 --> 00:09:25.100
  • In Psalm 36:8, it says: "They feast on the abundance of your
  • 00:09:25.110 --> 00:09:29.130
  • house; you give them drink from the river of delights.
  • 00:09:29.140 --> 00:09:32.040
  • For with you is the fountain of life;
  • 00:09:32.050 --> 00:09:33.210
  • in your light we see light."
  • 00:09:33.220 --> 00:09:36.070
  • I love how the psalmist is in touch with his
  • 00:09:36.080 --> 00:09:38.030
  • deepest thirst and desires.
  • 00:09:38.040 --> 00:09:40.100
  • Underline that phrase, "The river of delights."
  • 00:09:40.110 --> 00:09:45.210
  • You see, God wants us to learn how to drink from the river of
  • 00:09:45.220 --> 00:09:49.070
  • his delights, the fountain of life,
  • 00:09:49.080 --> 00:09:51.090
  • to really get our deepest longings fulfilled,
  • 00:09:51.100 --> 00:09:54.140
  • to really get our deepest thirsts quenched.
  • 00:09:54.150 --> 00:09:58.120
  • That's what he wants for us.
  • 00:09:58.130 --> 00:10:00.080
  • You know, when the Bible tells us not to do
  • 00:10:00.090 --> 00:10:01.250
  • something, you know, the "Thou shalt nots."
  • 00:10:01.260 --> 00:10:03.050
  • "Thou shalt not do this. Thou shalt not do that.
  • 00:10:03.060 --> 00:10:05.070
  • Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • 00:10:05.080 --> 00:10:07.240
  • Though shall not steal."
  • 00:10:07.250 --> 00:10:10.220
  • Why does the Bible do that?
  • 00:10:10.230 --> 00:10:13.170
  • Is God trying to make us miserable?
  • 00:10:13.180 --> 00:10:16.020
  • No, it's because God is saying, "You weren't designed for that.
  • 00:10:16.030 --> 00:10:21.150
  • That's not what you're designed for.
  • 00:10:21.160 --> 00:10:22.250
  • You were designed for something so much more.
  • 00:10:22.260 --> 00:10:24.250
  • And so, if you do these things that are called
  • 00:10:24.260 --> 00:10:27.130
  • 'sin,' then you won't be fulfilled, 'cause that's not
  • 00:10:27.140 --> 00:10:30.160
  • why you were designed."
  • 00:10:30.170 --> 00:10:31.260

  • 00:11:40.210 --> 00:11:43.050
  • of Christ into the world.
  • 00:11:43.060 --> 00:11:45.090
  • Kerry: So, what were you designed to thirst for?
  • 00:11:48.060 --> 00:11:51.280
  • And that's what I want us to really get in
  • 00:11:51.290 --> 00:11:53.080
  • tune with in this series.
  • 00:11:53.090 --> 00:11:55.200
  • Look at this C.S. Lewis quote: "Our Lord finds
  • 00:11:55.210 --> 00:11:57.280
  • our desires not too strong, but too weak.
  • 00:11:57.290 --> 00:12:01.060
  • We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex
  • 00:12:01.070 --> 00:12:03.280
  • and ambition, when infinite joy is offered us.
  • 00:12:03.290 --> 00:12:07.130
  • Like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a
  • 00:12:07.140 --> 00:12:10.120
  • slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a
  • 00:12:10.130 --> 00:12:14.180
  • holiday at the sea, we are far too easily pleased."
  • 00:12:14.190 --> 00:12:19.260
  • C.S. Lewis is saying, "To break free from sin,
  • 00:12:19.270 --> 00:12:22.120
  • we think we need to suppress our desires.
  • 00:12:22.130 --> 00:12:24.280
  • We need to douse the flame of our passion.
  • 00:12:24.290 --> 00:12:27.090
  • We need to deny our desires."
  • 00:12:27.100 --> 00:12:31.130
  • But that's not true at all because God invites us to desire
  • 00:12:31.140 --> 00:12:34.260
  • even more deeply, to drink even more deeply.
  • 00:12:34.270 --> 00:12:39.270
  • Instead of trying to deny our desires to overcome sin,
  • 00:12:39.280 --> 00:12:43.230
  • what we have to do is get in touch with our desires so that
  • 00:12:43.240 --> 00:12:48.040
  • we can really meet those desires.
  • 00:12:48.050 --> 00:12:50.280
  • And only God can do that.
  • 00:12:50.290 --> 00:12:53.160
  • We get stuck playing in the mud puddle of instant
  • 00:12:53.170 --> 00:12:55.190
  • gratification instead of swimming in the ocean of passion
  • 00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:58.190
  • and ultimate fulfillment that God offers because we're not in
  • 00:12:58.200 --> 00:13:01.170
  • touch with our deepest thirsts that God placed
  • 00:13:01.180 --> 00:13:04.240
  • there in the first place.
  • 00:13:04.250 --> 00:13:07.100
  • So, what are you really thirsty for?
  • 00:13:07.110 --> 00:13:09.280
  • I put down here, kinda combined all of humankind's thirsts that
  • 00:13:09.290 --> 00:13:15.060
  • God put deep within our souls into a few here.
  • 00:13:15.070 --> 00:13:20.260
  • And I want us to look at this because this series is all
  • 00:13:20.270 --> 00:13:24.180
  • about, how do you drink from the Fountain of Life?
  • 00:13:24.190 --> 00:13:27.260
  • But first, God has to reawaken your deepest longings.
  • 00:13:27.270 --> 00:13:32.290
  • God has to reawaken your thirst because Jesus said,
  • 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:35.160
  • "Come to me, all who are thirsty," anyone who is thirsty.
  • 00:13:35.170 --> 00:13:40.280
  • And some of you aren't in touch with your thirst.
  • 00:13:40.290 --> 00:13:44.240
  • You're playin' in mud puddles when the ocean is just around
  • 00:13:44.250 --> 00:13:48.050
  • the corner, but you just have no clue what
  • 00:13:48.060 --> 00:13:50.190
  • you're really thirsting for.
  • 00:13:50.200 --> 00:13:52.040
  • And you gotta get back in touch with
  • 00:13:52.050 --> 00:13:53.140
  • your God-given divine thirsts.
  • 00:13:53.150 --> 00:13:57.080
  • So, the first is the fountain of attention.
  • 00:13:57.090 --> 00:13:59.010
  • Did you know God placed in everyone's heart
  • 00:13:59.020 --> 00:14:01.030
  • that thirst for attention?
  • 00:14:01.040 --> 00:14:04.030
  • It seems like a bad thing, sounds like
  • 00:14:04.040 --> 00:14:05.200
  • a bad thing, but it's not.
  • 00:14:05.210 --> 00:14:07.190
  • It's just misused.
  • 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:09.110
  • I thirst to be noticed and treated with value rather than
  • 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:12.120
  • being brushed aside or looked past as if I'm invisible.
  • 00:14:12.130 --> 00:14:17.230
  • Have you ever been treated like you're invisible?
  • 00:14:17.240 --> 00:14:19.220
  • You know, you're a party or a gathering and you're talkin' to
  • 00:14:19.230 --> 00:14:21.200
  • someone, but they're looking right through you,
  • 00:14:21.210 --> 00:14:24.030
  • lookin' around you to try to see if there's someone more
  • 00:14:24.040 --> 00:14:25.270
  • important they can talk to.
  • 00:14:25.280 --> 00:14:28.060
  • And they treat you like you're invisible.
  • 00:14:28.070 --> 00:14:29.230
  • We've all been treated that way, and it feels awful.
  • 00:14:29.240 --> 00:14:31.200
  • Why?
  • 00:14:31.210 --> 00:14:33.040
  • Because God put within you a thirst
  • 00:14:33.050 --> 00:14:36.270
  • for the fountain of attention.
  • 00:14:36.280 --> 00:14:39.190
  • In Psalm 139:17, it says: "How precious are your
  • 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:43.010
  • thoughts about me, O God.
  • 00:14:43.020 --> 00:14:44.170
  • They cannot be numbered!"
  • 00:14:44.180 --> 00:14:46.250
  • God is always thinking about you.
  • 00:14:46.260 --> 00:14:49.060
  • You see, he is the fountain of attention.
  • 00:14:49.070 --> 00:14:52.010
  • The God who created the universe with one word that was a big
  • 00:14:52.020 --> 00:14:57.140
  • bang of instant light and power, that the expanding,
  • 00:14:57.150 --> 00:15:02.070
  • infinite universe was created within milliseconds by our God,
  • 00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:07.030
  • is thinkin' about you all the time.
  • 00:15:07.040 --> 00:15:08.260
  • He just can't get his mind off of you.
  • 00:15:08.270 --> 00:15:11.110
  • He's constantly thinkin' about you.
  • 00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:12.260
  • His thoughts are too numerous to count.
  • 00:15:12.270 --> 00:15:15.110
  • You always have his attention.
  • 00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:16.230
  • You're never invisible to God.
  • 00:15:16.240 --> 00:15:19.030
  • He cares about everything about you.
  • 00:15:19.040 --> 00:15:20.260
  • The Bible says that every tear you've ever cried he's
  • 00:15:20.270 --> 00:15:23.150
  • numbered, that he counts the number of hairs on your head,
  • 00:15:23.160 --> 00:15:28.060
  • which doesn't impress me at all.
  • 00:15:28.070 --> 00:15:29.160
  • So let's move on.
  • 00:15:29.170 --> 00:15:31.200
  • But maybe it impresses some of you.
  • 00:15:31.210 --> 00:15:33.220
  • But he cares about every detail.
  • 00:15:33.230 --> 00:15:35.170
  • He cares about every little problem,
  • 00:15:35.180 --> 00:15:37.000
  • every little detail in your life.
  • 00:15:37.010 --> 00:15:39.050
  • He thinks about you all the time.
  • 00:15:39.060 --> 00:15:41.220
  • God is always thinkin' about you, but instead of drinking
  • 00:15:41.230 --> 00:15:43.240
  • from the fountain of God's attention, we drink from the
  • 00:15:43.250 --> 00:15:47.180
  • polluted pool of tryin' to get everyone else's attention,
  • 00:15:47.190 --> 00:15:50.270
  • and that's why people get hooked on social media,
  • 00:15:50.280 --> 00:15:53.020
  • you know, always wonderin' what everyone else is thinking
  • 00:15:53.030 --> 00:15:55.190
  • and wanting to get attention.
  • 00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:56.290
  • And that's why some young women post degrading pictures of
  • 00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:00.070
  • themselves on the Internet, and they turn themselves into an
  • 00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:04.150
  • object to get attention rather than realizing that they're a
  • 00:16:04.160 --> 00:16:10.050
  • beautiful and sacred treasure of God,
  • 00:16:10.060 --> 00:16:12.160
  • who's always paying attention to them.
  • 00:16:12.170 --> 00:16:15.220
  • You see, we swim in this mud puddles,
  • 00:16:15.230 --> 00:16:20.010
  • and we wonder why we're still empty.
  • 00:16:20.020 --> 00:16:22.180
  • Michael John Cusick, in his book "Surfing for God," which I
  • 00:16:22.190 --> 00:16:25.090
  • highly recommend, says: "Every gift from the Designer has a
  • 00:16:25.100 --> 00:16:28.040
  • corresponding gift from the deceiver, a shadow gift, a
  • 00:16:28.050 --> 00:16:30.260
  • counterfeit that never fulfills, and leaves us empty."
  • 00:16:30.270 --> 00:16:34.090
  • And it's so true.
  • 00:16:34.100 --> 00:16:36.060
  • But let's go on to our real longings.
  • 00:16:36.070 --> 00:16:38.140
  • Second is the fountain of acceptance.
  • 00:16:38.150 --> 00:16:40.110
  • God put within your soul the thirst for acceptance.
  • 00:16:40.120 --> 00:16:43.060
  • I thirst to belong, I long to be desired instead of rejected.
  • 00:16:43.070 --> 00:16:46.190
  • That's why one of our greatest fears is the fear of rejection.
  • 00:16:46.200 --> 00:16:48.240
  • That's why we wanna cover up and not show who we're really like,
  • 00:16:48.250 --> 00:16:51.220
  • "Because if you know what I'm really like, you may reject me."
  • 00:16:51.230 --> 00:16:54.170
  • And that's why we try to impress people,
  • 00:16:54.180 --> 00:16:56.200
  • and that's why we wear masks.
  • 00:16:56.210 --> 00:17:00.030
  • Maybe it's a façade of confidence
  • 00:17:00.040 --> 00:17:02.100
  • or a façade of success.
  • 00:17:02.110 --> 00:17:05.140
  • Well, that's why we get so concerned about image rather
  • 00:17:05.150 --> 00:17:07.270
  • than integrity, because we're afraid of rejection.
  • 00:17:07.280 --> 00:17:11.210
  • But see, God put that thirst to be accepted within our soul.
  • 00:17:11.220 --> 00:17:16.000
  • In John 6:37, Jesus said: "'However, those the Father has
  • 00:17:16.010 --> 00:17:19.270
  • given me will come to me, and I will never reject them.'"
  • 00:17:19.280 --> 00:17:22.210
  • Underline that phrase, "I will never reject them."
  • 00:17:22.220 --> 00:17:25.010
  • We long for acceptance. We fear rejection.
  • 00:17:25.020 --> 00:17:27.250
  • And the God of the universe, when we come to him,
  • 00:17:27.260 --> 00:17:29.270
  • the God of the universe, no matter what you've done or where
  • 00:17:29.280 --> 00:17:31.240
  • you've been, he loves you and he accepts you
  • 00:17:31.250 --> 00:17:34.070
  • and he forgives you.
  • 00:17:34.080 --> 00:17:36.010
  • But we're tryin' to fill that God-given thirst for acceptance,
  • 00:17:36.020 --> 00:17:38.270
  • and we're content to swim in the stagnant pool of people
  • 00:17:38.280 --> 00:17:41.230
  • pleasing, tryin' to please people that don't even really
  • 00:17:41.240 --> 00:17:45.000
  • care about us, that just care about what we can do for them,
  • 00:17:45.010 --> 00:17:48.050
  • rather than swim in the ocean of God's
  • 00:17:48.060 --> 00:17:50.220
  • unconditional acceptance and love.
  • 00:17:50.230 --> 00:17:54.080
  • Then there's the fountain of satisfaction.
  • 00:17:54.090 --> 00:17:56.250
  • I thirst for fullness, I long to fill up
  • 00:17:56.260 --> 00:17:59.200
  • the emptiness in my soul.
  • 00:17:59.210 --> 00:18:02.240
  • God placed within your heart a thirst for satisfaction,
  • 00:18:02.250 --> 00:18:05.120
  • and that's why, in John 10:10, Jesus said: "'The thief comes to
  • 00:18:05.130 --> 00:18:07.280
  • steal and kill and destroy; but I have come that they may have
  • 00:18:07.290 --> 00:18:10.200
  • life, and have it to the full.'"
  • 00:18:10.210 --> 00:18:12.240
  • So, Jesus said, "I came as the Fountain of Life so that you can
  • 00:18:12.250 --> 00:18:16.260
  • be totally satisfied, so that you can have the fullness of
  • 00:18:16.270 --> 00:18:20.130
  • life, so you don't have to feel empty.
  • 00:18:20.140 --> 00:18:22.160
  • And yes, you have that emptiness in your soul,
  • 00:18:22.170 --> 00:18:24.180
  • but that emptiness drives you to me,
  • 00:18:24.190 --> 00:18:26.180
  • the only one who can fill it."
  • 00:18:26.190 --> 00:18:28.050
  • Yes, you have that deep thirst.
  • 00:18:28.060 --> 00:18:30.060
  • Get in touch with that so that that thirst takes you past the
  • 00:18:30.070 --> 00:18:33.180
  • mud puddles and into the Fountain of Life.
  • 00:18:33.190 --> 00:18:39.170
  • You see, we long for satisfaction, but we fall
  • 00:18:39.180 --> 00:18:42.180
  • into the polluted waters of pornography and lust
  • 00:18:42.190 --> 00:18:45.240
  • rather than to swim in the ocean of God's passion
  • 00:18:45.250 --> 00:18:49.110
  • and fullness and satisfaction.
  • 00:18:49.120 --> 00:18:52.100
  • Oh, and by the way, there's a lot of nice ways.
  • 00:18:52.110 --> 00:18:55.060
  • We think of lust or pornography and, "Oh, yeah, sin."
  • 00:18:55.070 --> 00:19:00.220
  • But there are a lot of nice ways, you know?
  • 00:19:00.230 --> 00:19:02.110
  • We can use food to try to fill that need for satisfaction.
  • 00:19:02.120 --> 00:19:08.190
  • You know, we can use hobbies.
  • 00:19:08.200 --> 00:19:09.290
  • We can do a lot of things that we've put in place of God as
  • 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:13.050
  • that ultimate thing, things that are okay.
  • 00:19:13.060 --> 00:19:15.080
  • It's just that when we put them in the place of God and put them
  • 00:19:15.090 --> 00:19:18.080
  • first, they become little gods and they
  • 00:19:18.090 --> 00:19:22.230
  • steal away our satisfaction.
  • 00:19:22.240 --> 00:19:26.220
  • And then there's the fountain of security.
  • 00:19:26.230 --> 00:19:29.210
  • I thirst to know that I will be okay,
  • 00:19:29.220 --> 00:19:31.130
  • that my future is certain.
  • 00:19:31.140 --> 00:19:32.230
  • God placed that in all of our hearts.
  • 00:19:32.240 --> 00:19:34.150
  • But that's only from Jesus.
  • 00:19:34.160 --> 00:19:36.050
  • In John 10:28, Jesus said: "'I give them eternal life,
  • 00:19:36.060 --> 00:19:39.110
  • they will never die, and no one can steal them out of my hand.
  • 00:19:39.120 --> 00:19:42.240
  • My Father gave my sheep to me.
  • 00:19:42.250 --> 00:19:45.040
  • He is greater than all and no person can steal my
  • 00:19:45.050 --> 00:19:48.120
  • sheep out of my Father's hand.
  • 00:19:48.130 --> 00:19:49.220
  • The Father and I are one.'"
  • 00:19:49.230 --> 00:19:52.120
  • And so, in Christ, in the Fountain of Life, we can have
  • 00:19:52.130 --> 00:19:55.250
  • eternal security, to know we'll be with him forever in heaven.
  • 00:19:55.260 --> 00:19:59.120
  • And when Christ is first in your life,
  • 00:19:59.130 --> 00:20:01.200
  • then your fears start to dissipate.
  • 00:20:01.210 --> 00:20:05.090
  • Whenever I put anything first in my life other than Christ--
  • 00:20:05.100 --> 00:20:08.120
  • it can even be good things.
  • 00:20:08.130 --> 00:20:09.220
  • It could be another person.
  • 00:20:09.230 --> 00:20:12.040
  • When you put anything, when you put money,
  • 00:20:12.050 --> 00:20:14.160
  • when you put possessions, when you put your retirement,
  • 00:20:14.170 --> 00:20:17.160
  • when you put anything, another person,
  • 00:20:17.170 --> 00:20:20.280
  • a relationship, ahead of Christ, you'll always feel insecure and
  • 00:20:20.290 --> 00:20:24.140
  • fearful because anytime you put anything that can change or be
  • 00:20:24.150 --> 00:20:27.170
  • taken away as the first place in your life that you build your
  • 00:20:27.180 --> 00:20:30.200
  • life upon, you'll always be insecure.
  • 00:20:30.210 --> 00:20:33.110
  • But then there's the fountain of significance.
  • 00:20:33.120 --> 00:20:36.070
  • I thirst for meaning, I long to make a powerful impact.
  • 00:20:36.080 --> 00:20:38.240
  • I long to know that I'm enough, that I have what it takes.
  • 00:20:38.250 --> 00:20:42.140
  • I think, for most women, it's they long
  • 00:20:42.150 --> 00:20:44.180
  • to know they're enough.
  • 00:20:44.190 --> 00:20:46.130
  • For most men, it's, "I long to know I have what it takes,"
  • 00:20:46.140 --> 00:20:50.060
  • because most of us don't think we do.
  • 00:20:50.070 --> 00:20:53.010
  • But we long to know that we do, and we don't want anyone
  • 00:20:53.020 --> 00:20:56.190
  • to find out that we don't.
  • 00:20:56.200 --> 00:21:00.070
  • So, how do we really get power and significance?
  • 00:21:00.080 --> 00:21:03.110
  • Because God placed in our hearts a thirst for power,
  • 00:21:03.120 --> 00:21:06.010
  • to make a powerful impact, for significance.
  • 00:21:06.020 --> 00:21:10.000
  • In 2 Corinthians 4:7, it says: "But we have this treasure in
  • 00:21:10.010 --> 00:21:12.230
  • jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is
  • 00:21:12.240 --> 00:21:15.260
  • from God and not from us."
  • 00:21:15.270 --> 00:21:17.260
  • And so, the way we drink from the fountain of significance
  • 00:21:17.270 --> 00:21:20.260
  • that comes through Christ is we admit our brokenness.
  • 00:21:20.270 --> 00:21:24.080
  • We're jars of clay, broken and cracked.
  • 00:21:24.090 --> 00:21:27.230
  • But the more brokenness we reveal and admit,
  • 00:21:27.240 --> 00:21:31.010
  • the more Christ can shine his power and light through.
  • 00:21:31.020 --> 00:21:36.030
  • And the paradox is, the more we humble ourselves and admit that
  • 00:21:36.040 --> 00:21:42.010
  • we're thirsty, the more we need him,
  • 00:21:42.020 --> 00:21:44.250
  • the more we humble ourselves and admit our brokenness,
  • 00:21:44.260 --> 00:21:47.240
  • the more he fills us up with his power that shines through us.
  • 00:21:47.250 --> 00:21:53.140
  • But when we use success, tryin' to be successful or to have the
  • 00:21:53.150 --> 00:21:58.110
  • image of success, it leaves us empty.
  • 00:21:58.120 --> 00:22:02.010
  • There's nothin' wrong with success.
  • 00:22:02.020 --> 00:22:04.020
  • It just, it'll never satisfy the deepest longings of your heart.
  • 00:22:04.030 --> 00:22:06.170
  • What you need is not success, it's significance to know your
  • 00:22:06.180 --> 00:22:09.250
  • life matters, to feel that significance that comes from
  • 00:22:09.260 --> 00:22:14.220
  • drinking form the fountain of life.
  • 00:22:14.230 --> 00:22:16.170
  • When you admit that you're thirsty, and you admit you're
  • 00:22:16.180 --> 00:22:20.030
  • broken, and you humble yourself before him, then he
  • 00:22:20.040 --> 00:22:23.020
  • begins to bring that healing and his power to bear in your life.
  • 00:22:23.030 --> 00:22:26.180
  • 00:22:26.190 --> 00:22:34.100
  • announcer: Here at Kerry Shook Ministries, we know that

  • as we share an original song from the newly released album.
  • 00:23:07.210 --> 00:23:10.290
  • 00:23:13.270 --> 00:23:23.260
  • 00:23:23.270 --> 00:23:27.250
  • In the early light,
  • 00:23:27.260 --> 00:23:29.180
  • out of creation formed a feeling.
  • 00:23:29.190 --> 00:23:35.140
  • The wonder of this place
  • 00:23:35.150 --> 00:23:37.060
  • inside a sea of grace and healing.
  • 00:23:37.070 --> 00:23:43.020
  • You were there.
  • 00:23:43.030 --> 00:23:44.120
  • You were there in the thick of it.
  • 00:23:44.130 --> 00:23:47.060
  • As I sinned, you came down,
  • 00:23:47.070 --> 00:23:48.260
  • made me innocent.
  • 00:23:48.270 --> 00:23:50.230
  • Now I'm losin' myself in the thrill of it,
  • 00:23:50.240 --> 00:23:54.190
  • whoa, the thrill of your love.
  • 00:23:54.200 --> 00:24:02.230
  • And I could dance with the joy I've found.
  • 00:24:02.240 --> 00:24:06.030
  • In your love, there's not a man
  • 00:24:06.040 --> 00:24:11.030
  • that could drag me down.
  • 00:24:11.040 --> 00:24:14.180
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:24:14.190 --> 00:24:18.040
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:24:18.050 --> 00:24:21.210
  • with your love.
  • 00:24:21.220 --> 00:24:28.170
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:24:28.180 --> 00:24:37.160
  • In the dead of night,
  • 00:24:37.170 --> 00:24:39.120
  • your Son brought down the light of the world.
  • 00:24:39.130 --> 00:24:45.000
  • And neither sin nor fear
  • 00:24:45.010 --> 00:24:46.290
  • could draw me less near to your love.
  • 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:53.020
  • You were there, you were there
  • 00:24:53.030 --> 00:24:54.270
  • in the thick of it.
  • 00:24:54.280 --> 00:24:56.200
  • As I sinned, you came down,
  • 00:24:56.210 --> 00:24:58.160
  • made me innocent.
  • 00:24:58.170 --> 00:25:00.190
  • Now I'm losin' myself in the thrill of it,
  • 00:25:00.200 --> 00:25:04.200
  • whoa, the thrill of your love.
  • 00:25:04.210 --> 00:25:12.140
  • And I could dance with the joy I've found.
  • 00:25:12.150 --> 00:25:16.030
  • In your love, there's not a man
  • 00:25:16.040 --> 00:25:20.200
  • that could drag me down.
  • 00:25:20.210 --> 00:25:24.100
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:24.110 --> 00:25:27.290
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:31.100
  • with your love.
  • 00:25:31.110 --> 00:25:38.080
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:25:38.090 --> 00:25:40.140
  • 00:25:40.150 --> 00:25:50.140
  • 00:25:50.150 --> 00:25:57.070
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:57.080 --> 00:26:00.270
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:26:00.280 --> 00:26:04.240
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:04.250 --> 00:26:08.160
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:26:08.170 --> 00:26:12.140
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:12.150 --> 00:26:16.080
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:26:16.090 --> 00:26:20.060
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:20.070 --> 00:26:24.000
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:26:24.010 --> 00:26:27.130
  • with your love.
  • 00:26:27.140 --> 00:26:31.180
  • And I could dance with the joy I've found
  • 00:26:31.190 --> 00:26:35.050
  • in your love.
  • 00:26:35.060 --> 00:26:39.050
  • There's not a man that could drag me down.
  • 00:26:39.060 --> 00:26:43.180
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:43.190 --> 00:26:47.050
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:26:47.060 --> 00:26:50.170
  • with your love.
  • 00:26:50.180 --> 00:26:57.130
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:26:57.140 --> 00:27:07.020
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:27:07.030 --> 00:27:09.100
  • 00:27:12.020 --> 00:27:22.010
