  • Kerry: How many of you guys like to camp?
  • 00:00:30.210 --> 00:00:33.000
  • Raise your hand.
  • 00:00:33.010 --> 00:00:34.220
  • Now, I'm not talking about glamping.
  • 00:00:34.230 --> 00:00:37.160
  • You know, I mean, everybody raised their hand.
  • 00:00:37.170 --> 00:00:39.140
  • I know everybody doesn't really like to camp, and you're
  • 00:00:39.150 --> 00:00:42.050
  • in church, and you just lied.
  • 00:00:42.060 --> 00:00:43.190
  • So, I'm not talking about being in a luxurious cabin
  • 00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:48.170
  • with all the amenities of home.
  • 00:00:48.180 --> 00:00:49.270
  • I'm talking about real camping.
  • 00:00:49.280 --> 00:00:52.280
  • I mean, there is just something amazing about going
  • 00:00:52.290 --> 00:00:55.290
  • with your family and really camping.
  • 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:59.040
  • You get them all away, away from the reach of cell phone
  • 00:00:59.050 --> 00:01:04.050
  • reception and no computers and television, and you're in the
  • 00:01:04.060 --> 00:01:09.080
  • wild beauty of God's creation, and your whole family just gets
  • 00:01:09.090 --> 00:01:14.140
  • reconnected, and you feel totally renewed in your soul,
  • 00:01:14.150 --> 00:01:19.090
  • and you make memories that will last a lifetime.
  • 00:01:19.100 --> 00:01:21.190
  • There is just something amazing about bringing your family
  • 00:01:21.200 --> 00:01:25.020
  • together and really camping, but there's also something awful
  • 00:01:25.030 --> 00:01:32.190
  • about bringing your family together and really camping.
  • 00:01:32.200 --> 00:01:36.280
  • I mean, you get away from the distractions of cell phones and
  • 00:01:36.290 --> 00:01:40.190
  • television and computers, and you're just stuck with each
  • 00:01:40.200 --> 00:01:44.020
  • other and nothing else to do but just to be in small tents,
  • 00:01:44.030 --> 00:01:50.140
  • where all of your personality, annoying personality qualities
  • 00:01:50.150 --> 00:01:55.170
  • are just amplified and character flaws are concentrated, to where
  • 00:01:55.180 --> 00:02:02.110
  • it just starts blazing into a wildfire of conflict at times.
  • 00:02:02.120 --> 00:02:07.010
  • Just makes you wanna go back to the car and slam your head
  • 00:02:07.020 --> 00:02:09.250
  • in the door or jump off of a beautiful scenic ledge
  • 00:02:09.260 --> 00:02:15.110
  • and that's kinda the way it is in a family, isn't it?
  • 00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:18.170
  • That's why we're starting this new series I'm
  • 00:02:18.180 --> 00:02:19.280
  • calling "Family Camp."
  • 00:02:19.290 --> 00:02:21.220
  • It's how to develop true connection with the people
  • 00:02:21.230 --> 00:02:24.070
  • closest to you, because the people closest to you will bring
  • 00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:27.200
  • you the most joy and the most pain in life.
  • 00:02:27.210 --> 00:02:32.050
  • It's the people closest to you, that you love the most that
  • 00:02:32.060 --> 00:02:37.240
  • can hurt you the most, or can bring you the most fulfillment,
  • 00:02:37.250 --> 00:02:44.280
  • and so what we're gonna do over the next several weeks is we're
  • 00:02:44.290 --> 00:02:48.020
  • gonna go to family camp, and we're gonna learn what God's
  • 00:02:48.030 --> 00:02:52.290
  • Word has to say about relationships and building
  • 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:56.160
  • relationships with the people that you love the most.
  • 00:02:56.170 --> 00:03:02.150
  • But you have to understand something right away.
  • 00:03:02.160 --> 00:03:05.220
  • That is, the stages that all families go through.
  • 00:03:05.230 --> 00:03:08.270
  • If you don't understand this, then God won't be able to take
  • 00:03:08.280 --> 00:03:14.080
  • the awesome and the awful, the joy and the pain and weave it
  • 00:03:14.090 --> 00:03:19.200
  • all together to bring you into a deeper relationship with himself
  • 00:03:19.210 --> 00:03:24.280
  • and a closer relationship to the ones you love,
  • 00:03:24.290 --> 00:03:27.260
  • because that's really what family is all about.
  • 00:03:27.270 --> 00:03:30.290
  • And they all go through--
  • 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:32.200
  • Every family goes through these stages.
  • 00:03:32.210 --> 00:03:35.080
  • The first one is what I call the dream stage.
  • 00:03:35.090 --> 00:03:38.250
  • You know, husbands and wives have this dream image
  • 00:03:38.260 --> 00:03:41.040
  • of what their family is going to be like.
  • 00:03:41.050 --> 00:03:43.010
  • Some little girls, when, you know, they're in grade school,
  • 00:03:43.020 --> 00:03:46.150
  • they have a dream image of what their husband
  • 00:03:46.160 --> 00:03:48.170
  • is going to be like.
  • 00:03:48.180 --> 00:03:49.270
  • They even have names for their kids, but most husbands and
  • 00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:52.230
  • wives have this dream image of what their family is going
  • 00:03:52.240 --> 00:03:55.050
  • to be like, and they're gonna be the perfect family.
  • 00:03:55.060 --> 00:03:58.290
  • "We're gonna have the perfect kids."
  • 00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:00.110
  • Or, "We're gonna be the perfect parents.
  • 00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:02.050
  • We're gonna do things right."
  • 00:04:02.060 --> 00:04:05.180
  • Well, that dream stage is not really the dream stage.
  • 00:04:05.190 --> 00:04:08.080
  • It's the denial stage.
  • 00:04:08.090 --> 00:04:11.000
  • That's what it is, 'cause there's no such thing
  • 00:04:11.010 --> 00:04:13.220
  • as a perfect family, and so it's a denial stage.
  • 00:04:13.230 --> 00:04:16.250
  • How do you know if you're in this denial stage?
  • 00:04:16.260 --> 00:04:20.120
  • Well, first you say things like, "We're not gonna make
  • 00:04:20.130 --> 00:04:23.150
  • the same mistakes our parents made.
  • 00:04:23.160 --> 00:04:26.030
  • You know, we're gonna do it totally differently because they
  • 00:04:26.040 --> 00:04:27.190
  • made all these mistakes, and we're gonna do it perfectly."
  • 00:04:27.200 --> 00:04:30.040
  • Or you look at some dysfunctional family,
  • 00:04:30.050 --> 00:04:33.280
  • and you say, "Wow, they're messed up.
  • 00:04:33.290 --> 00:04:37.030
  • I'm glad we're not gonna do it that way.
  • 00:04:37.040 --> 00:04:39.110
  • No wonder their kids are doing that," and you're
  • 00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:43.250
  • kinda judgmental in that denial stage and
  • 00:04:43.260 --> 00:04:46.200
  • that's usually before you have kids.
  • 00:04:46.210 --> 00:04:48.200
  • But in that denial stage you think you're in the dream stage,
  • 00:04:48.210 --> 00:04:54.280
  • but eventually you move to the second stage and
  • 00:04:54.290 --> 00:04:57.060
  • that's dysfunction and, really, all family start out
  • 00:04:57.070 --> 00:05:01.090
  • in the dysfunction stage.
  • 00:05:01.100 --> 00:05:03.230
  • All families are dysfunctional to some degree and
  • 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:07.020
  • the quicker you admit that, the quicker you can put
  • 00:05:07.030 --> 00:05:09.050
  • the fun back in dysfunction.
  • 00:05:09.060 --> 00:05:11.150
  • If you don't really face that dysfunction it turns
  • 00:05:11.160 --> 00:05:14.240
  • into disease and there are four symptoms that
  • 00:05:14.250 --> 00:05:17.000
  • disease is spreading in a family.
  • 00:05:17.010 --> 00:05:19.030
  • First is avoidance.
  • 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:21.020
  • Nobody ever talks about the tough issues.
  • 00:05:21.030 --> 00:05:23.100
  • You know, it's like in your family, if there's avoidance,
  • 00:05:23.110 --> 00:05:25.200
  • it means that they sweep all the problems under the rug
  • 00:05:25.210 --> 00:05:29.220
  • and that they avoid conflict at all costs.
  • 00:05:29.230 --> 00:05:32.170
  • Nobody talks about tough issues.
  • 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:35.140
  • Yeah, everybody knows there's an elephant in the room,
  • 00:05:35.150 --> 00:05:37.260
  • but nobody admits and talks about it.
  • 00:05:37.270 --> 00:05:40.160
  • Everything is pleasant and fine, but beneath the
  • 00:05:40.170 --> 00:05:42.080
  • surface it's not so great.
  • 00:05:42.090 --> 00:05:44.210
  • That's disease.
  • 00:05:44.220 --> 00:05:46.210
  • And then, addictions, when a family member starts to try
  • 00:05:46.220 --> 00:05:50.160
  • to anesthetize their pain or try to cover up
  • 00:05:50.170 --> 00:05:53.200
  • their pain by some addiction.
  • 00:05:53.210 --> 00:05:58.040
  • It makes them feel better in the moment, but then
  • 00:05:58.050 --> 00:06:00.230
  • they get trapped, and it really traps the whole family.
  • 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:03.130
  • And then, attacks.
  • 00:06:03.140 --> 00:06:05.190
  • Arguing is really healthy in a family, where you can argue, and
  • 00:06:05.200 --> 00:06:09.020
  • you can really develop a deeper connection through conflict,
  • 00:06:09.030 --> 00:06:13.190
  • but when you attack each other, constantly attacking each other,
  • 00:06:13.200 --> 00:06:17.040
  • not getting to the deeper issues, that's disease,
  • 00:06:17.050 --> 00:06:20.000
  • and it's devastating.
  • 00:06:20.010 --> 00:06:21.100
  • And then, animosity.
  • 00:06:21.110 --> 00:06:22.220
  • It's when the bitterness builds up, when anger and hurt
  • 00:06:22.230 --> 00:06:26.040
  • is stuffed down, and it happens all the time,
  • 00:06:26.050 --> 00:06:29.210
  • and disease always leads to death.
  • 00:06:29.220 --> 00:06:32.220
  • Usually, in a family the disease has to get so bad
  • 00:06:32.230 --> 00:06:35.180
  • that it brings death to our denial.
  • 00:06:35.190 --> 00:06:38.160
  • The disease eats away at our denial.
  • 00:06:38.170 --> 00:06:41.000
  • It brings death to our denial, where we have to admit
  • 00:06:41.010 --> 00:06:42.280
  • we need God, and we need others.
  • 00:06:42.290 --> 00:06:44.110
  • We can't fix this one on our own.
  • 00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:46.080
  • That we can't control this one.
  • 00:06:46.090 --> 00:06:48.140
  • We have to die to our pride, die to our self,
  • 00:06:48.150 --> 00:06:51.270
  • die to trying to control, die to the dream of perfection.
  • 00:06:51.280 --> 00:06:58.050
  • God so many times allows us to come to the place of death
  • 00:06:58.060 --> 00:07:03.200
  • to denial, when the problem gets so bad we know we can't fix it,
  • 00:07:03.210 --> 00:07:08.260
  • but here is the great news.
  • 00:07:08.270 --> 00:07:10.070
  • If you're in that place right now in your family,
  • 00:07:10.080 --> 00:07:12.290
  • you have to go through death to get to destiny.
  • 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:15.290
  • Isn't that amazing?
  • 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:17.230
  • You have to go through death, death to denial,
  • 00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:20.050
  • to get to reality.
  • 00:07:20.060 --> 00:07:21.150
  • That's why I said, you know, I wanna be so encouraging today,
  • 00:07:21.160 --> 00:07:24.030
  • because it is so encouraging, but you have to face reality,
  • 00:07:24.040 --> 00:07:27.190
  • and then you can move to destiny.
  • 00:07:27.200 --> 00:07:29.290
  • God wants us to move to destiny, so I want us to look at
  • 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.240
  • a passage in John where Jesus raised his friend Lazarus
  • 00:07:32.250 --> 00:07:36.060
  • from the dead, and in this miracle we see how God can
  • 00:07:36.070 --> 00:07:39.170
  • move us to where our denial dies so that we can move
  • 00:07:39.180 --> 00:07:44.210
  • into our destiny in our families.
  • 00:07:44.220 --> 00:07:48.110
  • So, would you open your Bibles to John chapter 11 and
  • 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:50.130
  • would you stand in honor of God's Word?
  • 00:07:50.140 --> 00:07:52.250
  • And just follow along with me.
  • 00:07:52.260 --> 00:07:55.010
  • There is so much in this miracle that relates to what God
  • 00:07:55.020 --> 00:07:59.040
  • wants to do in our lives and families.
  • 00:07:59.050 --> 00:08:01.080
  • "Now a man named Lazarus was sick.
  • 00:08:02.200 --> 00:08:04.210
  • He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
  • 00:08:04.220 --> 00:08:08.040
  • So the sisters sent word to Jesus,
  • 00:08:08.050 --> 00:08:09.280
  • 'Lord, the one you love is sick.'
  • 00:08:09.290 --> 00:08:12.080
  • Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
  • 00:08:12.090 --> 00:08:14.260
  • Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed
  • 00:08:14.270 --> 00:08:16.290
  • where he was two more days.
  • 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:18.210
  • Then he said to his disciples, 'Let us go back to Judea.'
  • 00:08:18.220 --> 00:08:22.050
  • On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been
  • 00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:25.020
  • in the tomb for four days.
  • 00:08:25.030 --> 00:08:27.070
  • ' Lord,' Martha said to Jesus, 'if you had been here,
  • 00:08:27.080 --> 00:08:29.230
  • my brother would not have died.'
  • 00:08:29.240 --> 00:08:31.230
  • And Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:35.110
  • He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.'"
  • 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:39.220
  • You can be seated.
  • 00:08:40.110 --> 00:08:41.200
  • We see that Jesus raises his friend Lazarus from the dead,
  • 00:08:41.210 --> 00:08:45.070
  • and he gives us the principles on how to align with him and his
  • 00:08:45.080 --> 00:08:49.170
  • power so that he can resurrect the dead places in our lives,
  • 00:08:49.180 --> 00:08:53.180
  • in our families, bring us to life, bring our families
  • 00:08:53.190 --> 00:08:57.150
  • to life, bring healing and strength to us.
  • 00:08:57.160 --> 00:09:00.150
  • Now, let's just break it apart. Look at verse 3.
  • 00:09:00.160 --> 00:09:02.220
  • "So the sisters sent word to Jesus,
  • 00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:05.190
  • 'Lord, the one you love is sick.'"
  • 00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:08.010
  • First thing these sisters do, Mary and Martha call
  • 00:09:08.020 --> 00:09:12.070
  • for Jesus when their brother is sick.
  • 00:09:12.080 --> 00:09:15.140
  • I mean, they did the right thing.
  • 00:09:15.150 --> 00:09:16.240
  • They turned to Christ when the disease hit.
  • 00:09:16.250 --> 00:09:19.230
  • They didn't wait and say,
  • 00:09:19.240 --> 00:09:21.050
  • "Uh, it's probably not that big a deal.
  • 00:09:21.060 --> 00:09:23.150
  • We don't need Jesus."
  • 00:09:23.160 --> 00:09:25.090
  • No, right away they called for Christ and some of you have
  • 00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:28.070
  • been trying to fix your problems on your own.
  • 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:30.190
  • You've been trying to control the situation.
  • 00:09:30.200 --> 00:09:32.260
  • You've been trying to keep it hidden and now it's getting
  • 00:09:32.270 --> 00:09:35.280
  • to the place where you realize you can't fix it,
  • 00:09:35.290 --> 00:09:38.050
  • you can't control it, you can't keep it hidden.
  • 00:09:38.060 --> 00:09:40.280
  • And you're in a good place. You need to call on Christ.
  • 00:09:40.290 --> 00:09:43.180
  • female announcer: Still to come with Pastor Kerry Shook.

  • 00:10:57.110 --> 00:10:59.050
  • the light of Christ into the world.
  • 00:10:59.060 --> 00:11:01.200
  • Kerry: And in verse 5 and 6 it says, "Jesus loved Martha
  • 00:11:04.050 --> 00:11:06.100
  • and her sister and Lazarus.
  • 00:11:06.110 --> 00:11:08.050
  • Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where
  • 00:11:08.060 --> 00:11:11.030
  • he was two more days."
  • 00:11:11.040 --> 00:11:13.100
  • Now, that is the most interesting part
  • 00:11:13.110 --> 00:11:15.020
  • of this whole miracle.
  • 00:11:15.030 --> 00:11:17.040
  • Jesus finds out his friend that he loves, Lazarus, is sick, and
  • 00:11:17.050 --> 00:11:21.080
  • he waits two more days before he goes to him, and there will be
  • 00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:25.120
  • times where God will allow you to go through painful delays
  • 00:11:25.130 --> 00:11:31.130
  • in a relationship, in your marriage, in your family,
  • 00:11:31.140 --> 00:11:34.190
  • painful delays where you're praying, you're doing the right
  • 00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:37.080
  • thing, you're calling on God, you're going,
  • 00:11:37.090 --> 00:11:39.010
  • "God, I need you to intervene.
  • 00:11:39.020 --> 00:11:42.060
  • My teenager is struggling. I need you to intervene.
  • 00:11:42.070 --> 00:11:44.240
  • I'm hurting for them. God, I need you."
  • 00:11:44.250 --> 00:11:48.110
  • And it feels like you're hitting a brick wall.
  • 00:11:48.120 --> 00:11:50.170
  • Nothing is changing.
  • 00:11:50.180 --> 00:11:52.050
  • In your marriage, "God, you gotta fix this situation.
  • 00:11:52.060 --> 00:11:55.050
  • You gotta change them.
  • 00:11:55.060 --> 00:11:57.000
  • This hurts," and you're hitting a brick wall.
  • 00:11:57.010 --> 00:12:00.100
  • Nothing is changing, and you see at that point you have a choice.
  • 00:12:00.110 --> 00:12:08.030
  • You can choose to persevere, keep leaning on God, or you can
  • 00:12:08.040 --> 00:12:12.110
  • choose to give up, but when you choose to persevere that's
  • 00:12:12.120 --> 00:12:17.020
  • when God brings breakthrough in your own soul.
  • 00:12:17.030 --> 00:12:20.050
  • When you begin to learn to trust him even when you don't see the
  • 00:12:20.060 --> 00:12:24.100
  • results, that's when God brings you his overwhelming peace.
  • 00:12:24.110 --> 00:12:28.110
  • "God, I choose to trust you. I'm gonna keep trusting you."
  • 00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:32.080
  • You see, it's in those delays, it's in the difficulties
  • 00:12:32.090 --> 00:12:37.240
  • where your family can grow strong and close
  • 00:12:37.250 --> 00:12:41.020
  • as you choose to trust God.
  • 00:12:41.030 --> 00:12:43.050
  • Anyway, it's in those delays and difficulties where God
  • 00:12:43.060 --> 00:12:46.130
  • can grow you close to himself.
  • 00:12:46.140 --> 00:12:49.030
  • As I said, it's our families that bring us the most joy and
  • 00:12:49.040 --> 00:12:51.280
  • the most pain, and it's during the times of pain, maybe
  • 00:12:51.290 --> 00:12:55.250
  • you feel all alone, that you can experience God's power
  • 00:12:55.260 --> 00:13:02.040
  • to fill you up the most.
  • 00:13:02.050 --> 00:13:04.200
  • I want you to look at verse 14 and 15, because Jesus,
  • 00:13:04.210 --> 00:13:07.210
  • after two days of waiting, he said, "Now my friend
  • 00:13:07.220 --> 00:13:10.240
  • Lazarus is asleep, so let's go to him."
  • 00:13:10.250 --> 00:13:13.000
  • And the disciples said, "Wait a minute.
  • 00:13:13.010 --> 00:13:14.170
  • I mean, you know, if he's sleeping that's
  • 00:13:14.180 --> 00:13:16.130
  • a really good thing, Lord.
  • 00:13:16.140 --> 00:13:18.110
  • You know if he's sick he probably needs rest,
  • 00:13:18.120 --> 00:13:20.210
  • so we probably shouldn't bother him.
  • 00:13:20.220 --> 00:13:22.010
  • Just let him sleep."
  • 00:13:22.020 --> 00:13:23.210
  • And Jesus was like, "You guys just don't get it, do you?"
  • 00:13:23.220 --> 00:13:26.060
  • So, in verse 14 and 15, "He told them plainly,
  • 00:13:26.070 --> 00:13:29.250
  • 'Lazarus is dead,'" all right?
  • 00:13:29.260 --> 00:13:31.290
  • "And for your sake I am glad I was not there,
  • 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:34.080
  • so that you may believe.
  • 00:13:34.090 --> 00:13:35.240
  • But let us go to him."
  • 00:13:35.250 --> 00:13:37.150
  • So, Jesus said, "The delay was all part of my
  • 00:13:37.160 --> 00:13:39.160
  • plan to build your faith."
  • 00:13:39.170 --> 00:13:41.120
  • It's one thing to heal a sick man.
  • 00:13:41.130 --> 00:13:42.280
  • It's another thing to raise a dead man, and he said,
  • 00:13:42.290 --> 00:13:45.010
  • "It was all part of my plan to allow this to go from disease
  • 00:13:45.020 --> 00:13:49.230
  • to death so that I could teach you to trust me,
  • 00:13:49.240 --> 00:13:53.250
  • to depend on me no matter what."
  • 00:13:53.260 --> 00:13:57.090
  • And maybe you've experienced your family
  • 00:13:57.100 --> 00:13:59.230
  • going from disease to death.
  • 00:13:59.240 --> 00:14:02.190
  • God allows it.
  • 00:14:02.200 --> 00:14:06.000
  • Part of his plan to build your faith, to prepare
  • 00:14:06.010 --> 00:14:09.120
  • you for something powerful.
  • 00:14:09.130 --> 00:14:14.010
  • He uses it to build your relationship to him,
  • 00:14:14.020 --> 00:14:17.220
  • to get you to totally trust him because it's out of your hands.
  • 00:14:17.230 --> 00:14:20.260
  • It's like, "God, I give up.
  • 00:14:20.270 --> 00:14:23.190
  • You know, I'm so anxious and stressed and worried
  • 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:25.220
  • about this situation in my family, but I can't fix it."
  • 00:14:25.230 --> 00:14:31.180
  • One father told me when he saw his teenage daughter going
  • 00:14:31.190 --> 00:14:35.090
  • through such pain, and he's doing everything he could to
  • 00:14:35.100 --> 00:14:38.140
  • help her get through, but yet nothing was working,
  • 00:14:38.150 --> 00:14:42.000
  • and he said, "I feel like a man whose arms have been cut off.
  • 00:14:42.010 --> 00:14:45.050
  • I just feel helpless.
  • 00:14:45.060 --> 00:14:46.200
  • I've always been able to fix things for my kids,
  • 00:14:46.210 --> 00:14:48.140
  • but I can't fix this one."
  • 00:14:48.150 --> 00:14:52.040
  • And that's right where God wanted him to be, so he could
  • 00:14:52.050 --> 00:14:55.000
  • feel the arms of heavenly Father who could hold him
  • 00:14:55.010 --> 00:14:59.240
  • and his daughter at the same time.
  • 00:14:59.250 --> 00:15:04.000
  • I want you to look at this next verse.
  • 00:15:04.010 --> 00:15:06.090
  • In verse 32 it says, "When Mary arrived and saw Jesus,
  • 00:15:06.100 --> 00:15:09.020
  • she fell at his feet and said, 'Lord, if only you had
  • 00:15:09.030 --> 00:15:11.150
  • been here, my brother would not have died,'"
  • 00:15:11.160 --> 00:15:14.070
  • so she's totally honest with Christ.
  • 00:15:14.080 --> 00:15:16.050
  • She comes up to him, and she says, "I don't get it.
  • 00:15:16.060 --> 00:15:19.140
  • If you had been here like we asked you, if you'd come through
  • 00:15:19.150 --> 00:15:22.190
  • right when we first prayed, then he wouldn't have died,
  • 00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:27.050
  • so what were you doing for all that time that was more
  • 00:15:27.060 --> 00:15:31.040
  • important than my brother who you loved?"
  • 00:15:31.050 --> 00:15:35.050
  • She was saying, "Don't you love us?
  • 00:15:35.060 --> 00:15:36.150
  • Don't you care about us?"
  • 00:15:36.160 --> 00:15:37.250
  • She was like, "If you'd just been here sooner--"
  • 00:15:37.260 --> 00:15:40.000
  • I mean, she's pouring out her heart, her anger,
  • 00:15:40.010 --> 00:15:42.000
  • her frustration, her confusion,
  • 00:15:42.010 --> 00:15:45.090
  • and Jesus doesn't rebuke her, does he?
  • 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:47.240
  • I'm so thankful for that because he wants us to pour out
  • 00:15:47.250 --> 00:15:50.130
  • our heart, our anger, our confusion, and I know there is
  • 00:15:50.140 --> 00:15:55.070
  • probably a teenage girl out there, a teenage boy out there
  • 00:15:55.080 --> 00:16:00.110
  • that's going, "Jesus, why did you let my parents get divorced?
  • 00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:06.080
  • If you'd just been here sooner, if you'd been here sooner
  • 00:16:06.090 --> 00:16:09.260
  • then my family wouldn't have been torn apart."
  • 00:16:09.270 --> 00:16:14.060
  • There is a woman out there who says, "God, why did you allow
  • 00:16:14.070 --> 00:16:18.180
  • my husband to betray my trust and commit adultery?
  • 00:16:18.190 --> 00:16:21.180
  • If you had intervened, if you'd been there sooner--
  • 00:16:21.190 --> 00:16:24.120
  • I was praying. I was trusting you.
  • 00:16:24.130 --> 00:16:26.180
  • I was trying to build a godly marriage.
  • 00:16:26.190 --> 00:16:28.050
  • If you'd been there sooner."
  • 00:16:28.060 --> 00:16:30.170
  • Or, "God, if you would just opened my eyes sooner,
  • 00:16:30.180 --> 00:16:34.190
  • then it wouldn't have happened.
  • 00:16:34.200 --> 00:16:36.170
  • Where were you?"
  • 00:16:36.180 --> 00:16:39.270
  • Or some parent out there is going, "God, if you would have
  • 00:16:39.280 --> 00:16:43.010
  • just intervened and not let my teenager get addicted to drugs.
  • 00:16:43.020 --> 00:16:48.230
  • Where were you?"
  • 00:16:48.240 --> 00:16:51.200
  • I think that's a question we ask God a lot.
  • 00:16:51.210 --> 00:16:54.210
  • "Where were you?
  • 00:16:54.220 --> 00:16:56.020
  • Where were you when this happened?"
  • 00:16:56.030 --> 00:16:58.180
  • And I don't know all the answers to that, but I can tell you
  • 00:16:58.190 --> 00:17:03.110
  • God cares about what you're going through.
  • 00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:05.100
  • I don't know all the reasons why God allows the pain.
  • 00:17:05.110 --> 00:17:07.210
  • I know one of 'em is to teach us to depend on him when we
  • 00:17:07.220 --> 00:17:10.120
  • can't do it, but another thing that I know is that God cares.
  • 00:17:10.130 --> 00:17:17.040
  • Look at the next verse, verse 33.
  • 00:17:17.050 --> 00:17:19.100
  • It says, "When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other
  • 00:17:19.110 --> 00:17:21.280
  • people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him,
  • 00:17:21.290 --> 00:17:25.140
  • and he was deeply troubled.
  • 00:17:25.150 --> 00:17:27.150
  • 'Where have you put him?' he asked them.
  • 00:17:27.160 --> 00:17:29.000
  • They told him, 'Lord, come and see.'
  • 00:17:29.010 --> 00:17:31.110
  • Then Jesus wept."
  • 00:17:31.120 --> 00:17:33.150
  • The God who created it all cries.
  • 00:17:33.160 --> 00:17:35.250
  • It's amazing.
  • 00:17:35.260 --> 00:17:37.160
  • You know, of all the world religions Christianity
  • 00:17:37.170 --> 00:17:40.150
  • is the only religion that shows a God who cries.
  • 00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:45.010
  • I mean, all the other world religions, like Christianity,
  • 00:17:45.020 --> 00:17:48.050
  • show a god who's almighty and all powerful, a god who's holy
  • 00:17:48.060 --> 00:17:52.070
  • and perfect, but none of the others have a God who cries.
  • 00:17:52.080 --> 00:17:58.180
  • We have a God who cries.
  • 00:17:58.190 --> 00:17:59.280
  • The God who created it all cries with us
  • 00:17:59.290 --> 00:18:01.230
  • when our hearts are crushed.
  • 00:18:01.240 --> 00:18:03.170
  • He knows what you're going through, and he cares about
  • 00:18:03.180 --> 00:18:05.220
  • what you're going through, but let's go on.
  • 00:18:05.230 --> 00:18:09.040
  • There's hope. Verse 39.
  • 00:18:09.050 --> 00:18:11.070
  • Jesus said, "'Take away the stone,' he said.
  • 00:18:11.080 --> 00:18:13.270
  • 'But, Lord,' said Martha, the sister of the dead man, 'by this
  • 00:18:13.280 --> 00:18:16.040
  • time there is a bad odor, for he's been dead four days,'"
  • 00:18:16.050 --> 00:18:19.200
  • so she admits how bad the situation is.
  • 00:18:19.210 --> 00:18:21.220
  • She says, "Lord, you need to understand the full truth
  • 00:18:21.230 --> 00:18:24.270
  • to this thing right here.
  • 00:18:24.280 --> 00:18:26.150
  • He's been dead four days.
  • 00:18:26.160 --> 00:18:28.040
  • I mean, it's gonna stink really bad."
  • 00:18:28.050 --> 00:18:31.290
  • I mean, I love that she just admits it.
  • 00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:33.270
  • "This is where we're at, you know?
  • 00:18:33.280 --> 00:18:35.070
  • This is the truth of the matter."
  • 00:18:35.080 --> 00:18:37.050
  • I mean, it's gone from disease to death.
  • 00:18:37.060 --> 00:18:40.280
  • Not just death, but he's been dead four days,
  • 00:18:40.290 --> 00:18:44.130
  • and so it's gonna smell.
  • 00:18:44.140 --> 00:18:47.220
  • I mean, this problem really stinks and some of you, I mean,
  • 00:18:47.230 --> 00:18:52.120
  • you really stink right now, but you don't know it because
  • 00:18:52.130 --> 00:18:56.270
  • your spiritual nose has been desensitized,
  • 00:18:56.280 --> 00:18:59.170
  • but I guarantee your family knows it.
  • 00:18:59.180 --> 00:19:02.020
  • You know, you got an anger problem that you're
  • 00:19:02.030 --> 00:19:03.230
  • not dealing with, and it's devastating.
  • 00:19:03.240 --> 00:19:06.070
  • It stinks.
  • 00:19:06.080 --> 00:19:08.160
  • I mean, you've been in the tomb four days, and it stinks,
  • 00:19:08.170 --> 00:19:11.200
  • and that's where it's at and if you'll face it then God
  • 00:19:11.210 --> 00:19:15.190
  • can bring resurrection to you and your family.
  • 00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:19.190
  • Sometimes you gotta roll the stone over.
  • 00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:20.290
  • Sometimes you gotta open it up a little bit for hope.
  • 00:19:21.000 --> 00:19:23.230
  • Well, in the next passage, verse 43, after Martha and Mary
  • 00:19:23.240 --> 00:19:27.280
  • had a little bit of faith, it says,
  • 00:19:27.290 --> 00:19:29.230
  • "Then Jesus shouted, 'Lazarus, come out!'"
  • 00:19:29.240 --> 00:19:35.060
  • And Jesus shouts that to us today.
  • 00:19:35.070 --> 00:19:38.110
  • Come out of the darkness and step into the light, the light
  • 00:19:38.120 --> 00:19:41.110
  • of truth, and let the light disintegrate your fears
  • 00:19:41.120 --> 00:19:46.230
  • and let the light evaporate the lies.
  • 00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:50.250
  • Let the light shine on it and disinfect it.
  • 00:19:50.260 --> 00:19:55.130
  • Let the light in on it.
  • 00:19:55.140 --> 00:19:59.030
  • Some of you, he's saying to you, "Come out.
  • 00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:01.050
  • Come out of the darkness. I love you.
  • 00:20:01.060 --> 00:20:03.070
  • Come out of death into your destiny.
  • 00:20:03.080 --> 00:20:05.090
  • Take the step of faith and come out."
  • 00:20:05.100 --> 00:20:07.150
  • And here is what happened in verse 44, "The dead man came
  • 00:20:07.160 --> 00:20:10.030
  • out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,
  • 00:20:10.040 --> 00:20:12.270
  • and a cloth around his face.
  • 00:20:12.280 --> 00:20:14.210
  • And Jesus said to them,
  • 00:20:14.220 --> 00:20:16.010
  • 'Take off the grave clothes and let him go.'"
  • 00:20:16.020 --> 00:20:19.050
  • Now, just get the picture here.
  • 00:20:19.060 --> 00:20:21.000
  • This guy that's been in the grave for four days, all of a
  • 00:20:21.010 --> 00:20:24.000
  • sudden he comes walking out of the tomb wrapped like a mummy.
  • 00:20:24.010 --> 00:20:30.110
  • He can barely walk 'cause he's wrapped so tightly, and everyone
  • 00:20:30.120 --> 00:20:35.200
  • just stands there in stunned silence, scared to death,
  • 00:20:35.210 --> 00:20:42.110
  • and Jesus says, "Well, go help him.
  • 00:20:42.120 --> 00:20:44.260
  • Get the grave clothes off."
  • 00:20:44.270 --> 00:20:46.230
  • "Oh, yeah," and they get the grave clothes off of him.
  • 00:20:46.240 --> 00:20:51.060
  • You see, the grave clothes represent all those negative
  • 00:20:51.070 --> 00:20:54.210
  • habit patterns and sinful patterns in our minds, in
  • 00:20:54.220 --> 00:20:58.260
  • our lives that we didn't get overnight and when Christ
  • 00:20:58.270 --> 00:21:02.150
  • resurrects you, when Christ resurrects a marriage, when
  • 00:21:02.160 --> 00:21:06.110
  • Christ resurrects a family, when Christ resurrects your heart
  • 00:21:06.120 --> 00:21:10.200
  • you still have the grave clothes on.
  • 00:21:10.210 --> 00:21:12.260
  • You're alive. He was--Lazarus was alive.
  • 00:21:12.270 --> 00:21:16.060
  • He was totally alive, but he couldn't move.
  • 00:21:16.070 --> 00:21:18.240
  • He was still bound, and then his friends took off the grave
  • 00:21:18.250 --> 00:21:23.200
  • clothes, and so when you come to Christ, he comes into your life,
  • 00:21:23.210 --> 00:21:27.260
  • you're alive, but then you need friends around you.
  • 00:21:27.270 --> 00:21:30.260
  • You need counseling in marriage.
  • 00:21:30.270 --> 00:21:33.250
  • You need accountability so you can move
  • 00:21:33.260 --> 00:21:37.280
  • from dysfunction to destiny.
  • 00:21:37.290 --> 00:21:42.000
  • Look at this passage in verse 25.
  • 00:21:42.010 --> 00:21:46.020
  • This is what it all comes down to.
  • 00:21:46.030 --> 00:21:47.170
  • "Jesus told her, 'I'm the resurrection and the life.
  • 00:21:47.180 --> 00:21:50.030
  • Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.'"
  • 00:21:50.040 --> 00:21:57.090
  • There is no such thing as the perfect marriage
  • 00:21:57.100 --> 00:21:59.290
  • or the perfect family.
  • 00:22:00.020 --> 00:22:02.010
  • It all comes down to choosing to let Christ
  • 00:22:02.020 --> 00:22:05.280
  • bring resurrection and renewal daily in your life.
  • 00:22:05.290 --> 00:22:08.210
  • 00:22:09.040 --> 00:22:16.200
  • announcer: Here at Kerry Shook Ministries we know that putting

  • share an original song from the newly released album.
  • 00:22:50.100 --> 00:22:53.230
  • 00:22:55.150 --> 00:23:05.090
  • 00:23:05.190 --> 00:23:09.060
  • In the early light
  • 00:23:09.280 --> 00:23:11.230
  • out of creation formed a feeling.
  • 00:23:11.240 --> 00:23:14.200
  • The wonder of this place
  • 00:23:17.160 --> 00:23:19.120
  • inside a sea of grace and healing.
  • 00:23:19.130 --> 00:23:22.250
  • You were there,
  • 00:23:25.090 --> 00:23:26.180
  • you were there in the thick of it.
  • 00:23:26.190 --> 00:23:29.070
  • As I sinned you came down
  • 00:23:29.080 --> 00:23:31.040
  • and made me innocent.
  • 00:23:31.050 --> 00:23:33.020
  • Now I'm losing myself
  • 00:23:33.030 --> 00:23:35.010
  • in the thrill of it, whoa-oh.
  • 00:23:35.020 --> 00:23:38.110
  • The thrill of your love,
  • 00:23:40.050 --> 00:23:44.180
  • and I could dance with the joy I've found.
  • 00:23:44.190 --> 00:23:48.150
  • In your love there's not a man
  • 00:23:48.160 --> 00:23:53.100
  • that could drag me down,
  • 00:23:53.110 --> 00:23:56.200
  • 'cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:23:56.210 --> 00:24:00.140
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:24:00.150 --> 00:24:04.010
  • with your love.
  • 00:24:04.020 --> 00:24:06.070
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:24:10.220 --> 00:24:13.040
  • 00:24:13.200 --> 00:24:18.270
  • In the dead of night
  • 00:24:19.190 --> 00:24:21.150
  • your son brought down the light of the world.
  • 00:24:21.160 --> 00:24:24.250
  • And now no sin nor fear
  • 00:24:27.020 --> 00:24:29.020
  • could draw me less near to your love.
  • 00:24:29.030 --> 00:24:32.140
  • You were there,
  • 00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:36.090
  • you were there in the thick of it.
  • 00:24:36.100 --> 00:24:38.260
  • As I sinned you came down
  • 00:24:38.270 --> 00:24:40.240
  • and made me innocent.
  • 00:24:40.250 --> 00:24:42.220
  • Now I'm losing myself
  • 00:24:42.230 --> 00:24:44.210
  • in the thrill of it, whoa-oh.
  • 00:24:44.220 --> 00:24:47.240
  • The thrill of your love,
  • 00:24:49.200 --> 00:24:54.090
  • and I could dance with the joy I've found.
  • 00:24:54.100 --> 00:24:58.000
  • In your love there's not a man
  • 00:24:58.010 --> 00:25:03.030
  • that could drag me down,
  • 00:25:03.040 --> 00:25:06.120
  • 'cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:06.130 --> 00:25:10.030
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:25:10.040 --> 00:25:13.170
  • with your love.
  • 00:25:13.180 --> 00:25:16.030
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:25:20.120 --> 00:25:23.000
  • 00:25:23.150 --> 00:25:33.110
  • 00:25:33.250 --> 00:25:38.100
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:39.110 --> 00:25:43.020
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:25:43.030 --> 00:25:46.270
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:46.280 --> 00:25:50.220
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:25:50.230 --> 00:25:54.190
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:25:54.200 --> 00:25:58.150
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire.
  • 00:25:58.160 --> 00:26:02.120
  • 'Cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:02.130 --> 00:26:06.080
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:26:06.090 --> 00:26:09.190
  • with your love,
  • 00:26:09.200 --> 00:26:13.160
  • and I could dance with the joy I've found.
  • 00:26:13.170 --> 00:26:17.120
  • In your love there's not a man
  • 00:26:17.130 --> 00:26:22.120
  • that could drag me down,
  • 00:26:22.130 --> 00:26:25.230
  • 'cause in your death I found my life.
  • 00:26:25.240 --> 00:26:29.130
  • I'll sing until my world's on fire
  • 00:26:29.140 --> 00:26:32.240
  • with your love.
  • 00:26:32.250 --> 00:26:35.190
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:26:39.200 --> 00:26:42.000
  • 00:26:42.200 --> 00:26:48.110
  • Caught in the thrill of your love.
  • 00:26:49.070 --> 00:26:51.090
  • [congregation cheering]
  • 00:26:52.040 --> 00:26:53.230
  • Chris Shook: We're so glad that you joined us
  • 00:26:54.100 --> 00:26:55.200
  • for the message today and hope that it impacts
  • 00:26:55.210 --> 00:26:57.250
  • your life all week long.
  • 00:26:57.260 --> 00:26:59.260
  • Kerry: And, Chris, I know that there's many out there
  • 00:26:59.270 --> 00:27:02.220
  • who've never received Christ,
  • 00:27:02.230 --> 00:27:04.110
  • and all you have to do is just pray and ask
  • 00:27:04.120 --> 00:27:07.160
  • for his salvation and say, "Jesus Christ, forgive me
  • 00:27:07.170 --> 00:27:10.110
  • of all my sins, come into my life,
  • 00:27:10.120 --> 00:27:12.090
  • be the lord of my life, I accept your free gift of salvation
  • 00:27:12.100 --> 00:27:15.170
  • and heaven one day."
  • 00:27:15.180 --> 00:27:17.200
  • And if you pray that prayer, Christ will come into your life,
  • 00:27:17.210 --> 00:27:20.030
  • and he'll never leave you.
  • 00:27:20.040 --> 00:27:21.140
  • 00:27:22.060 --> 00:27:29.130
