  • -John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written. I'm John Bradshaw.
  • 00:00:19.250 --> 00:00:22.090
  • Thanks for joining me.
  • 00:00:22.100 --> 00:00:23.220
  • We're continuing our ongoing series,
  • 00:00:23.230 --> 00:00:25.210
  • Great Chapters of the Bible,
  • 00:00:25.220 --> 00:00:27.280
  • and we're looking at a chapter that qualifies as great
  • 00:00:27.290 --> 00:00:30.140
  • by any number of measures.
  • 00:00:30.150 --> 00:00:32.060
  • It's the longest chapter in the Bible,
  • 00:00:32.070 --> 00:00:33.240
  • 176 verses, almost 2.500 words,
  • 00:00:33.250 --> 00:00:38.080
  • much longer than that next longest chapter in the Bible
  • 00:00:38.090 --> 00:00:40.290
  • which is First Kings 8.
  • 00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:43.030
  • None of the verses are longer than about 21 words though.
  • 00:00:43.040 --> 00:00:45.230
  • But Psalm 119 is a fascinating homage to God
  • 00:00:45.240 --> 00:00:50.210
  • and it speaks from beginning to end of the life-changing power
  • 00:00:50.220 --> 00:00:55.000
  • of the Word of God.
  • 00:00:55.010 --> 00:00:56.180
  • Now, there are a couple of things that are really
  • 00:00:56.190 --> 00:00:58.050
  • fascinating about this psalm.
  • 00:00:58.060 --> 00:01:00.130
  • Of the 176 verses, only one does not contain some explicit
  • 00:01:00.140 --> 00:01:06.160
  • reference to the word of God,
  • 00:01:06.170 --> 00:01:08.100
  • or God's revelation to the human family.
  • 00:01:08.110 --> 00:01:10.230
  • Now, you could argue that there are another couple,
  • 00:01:10.240 --> 00:01:13.160
  • but they reference God's faithfulness and mercy.
  • 00:01:13.170 --> 00:01:16.150
  • So, verse 122 seems to stand alone.
  • 00:01:16.160 --> 00:01:20.120
  • Here it is.
  • 00:01:20.130 --> 00:01:21.160
  • Be surety for your servant for good;
  • 00:01:21.170 --> 00:01:24.140
  • do not let the proud oppress me.
  • 00:01:24.150 --> 00:01:27.100
  • Every other one of the remaining 175 verses
  • 00:01:27.110 --> 00:01:30.240
  • references God's word,
  • 00:01:30.250 --> 00:01:32.060
  • whether it's a reference to Scripture
  • 00:01:32.070 --> 00:01:34.110
  • or to God's testimonies or His law
  • 00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:36.050
  • or statutes or precepts or judgments.
  • 00:01:36.060 --> 00:01:39.080
  • And this chapter is written in an interesting way.
  • 00:01:39.090 --> 00:01:42.180
  • Psalm 119 is written in 22 paragraphs
  • 00:01:42.190 --> 00:01:46.280
  • or stanzas of eight verses each.
  • 00:01:46.290 --> 00:01:50.150
  • Every one of those verses in each section
  • 00:01:50.160 --> 00:01:52.250
  • starts with the same Hebrew letter.
  • 00:01:52.260 --> 00:01:55.260
  • The psalm was written so that the first eight verses
  • 00:01:55.270 --> 00:01:58.030
  • all start with the Hebrew letter, aleph,
  • 00:01:58.040 --> 00:02:00.110
  • the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
  • 00:02:00.120 --> 00:02:02.210
  • Next set of eight verses start with the second letter
  • 00:02:02.220 --> 00:02:05.050
  • of the Hebrew alphabet, beth.
  • 00:02:05.060 --> 00:02:07.130
  • Third group of eight starts with gimel,
  • 00:02:07.140 --> 00:02:09.060
  • then daleth, he, waw,
  • 00:02:09.070 --> 00:02:10.060
  • and so on all the way through the 22 letters
  • 00:02:10.070 --> 00:02:13.100
  • of the Hebrew alphabet.
  • 00:02:13.110 --> 00:02:15.030
  • That's how we end up with 176 verses.
  • 00:02:15.040 --> 00:02:18.240
  • And these verses all follow a certain theme,
  • 00:02:18.250 --> 00:02:21.280
  • a theme the writer establishes
  • 00:02:21.290 --> 00:02:23.170
  • at the very beginning of the psalm.
  • 00:02:23.180 --> 00:02:25.130
  • Now this is verse one.
  • 00:02:25.140 --> 00:02:27.150
  • Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
  • 00:02:27.160 --> 00:02:29.160
  • who walk in the law of the Lord!
  • 00:02:29.170 --> 00:02:32.290
  • Now that verse sets the tone for the entire psalm.
  • 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:36.280
  • Those who are obedient to God are blessed.
  • 00:02:36.290 --> 00:02:39.180
  • That's really another way of saying that those
  • 00:02:39.190 --> 00:02:41.060
  • who are led by the Spirit of God are blessed.
  • 00:02:41.070 --> 00:02:43.270
  • Incidentally, that word blessed is the same word
  • 00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:47.090
  • which begins the Book of Psalms entirely,
  • 00:02:47.100 --> 00:02:49.180
  • when it says in Psalm 1, verse 1,
  • 00:02:49.190 --> 00:02:52.020
  • Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel
  • 00:02:52.030 --> 00:02:55.020
  • of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners,
  • 00:02:55.030 --> 00:02:58.150
  • nor sits in the seat of the scornful,
  • 00:02:58.160 --> 00:03:00.290
  • which is much the same thought really.
  • 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:03.070
  • It's a theme that carries right through the Book of Psalms.
  • 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:06.040
  • Faithfulness to God and the life-changing power,
  • 00:03:06.050 --> 00:03:09.020
  • the transforming power, of God's Word.
  • 00:03:09.030 --> 00:03:12.260
  • So look at Psalm 119 and verse 1 again.
  • 00:03:12.270 --> 00:03:16.290
  • Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
  • 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:19.130
  • who walk in the law of the Lord.
  • 00:03:19.140 --> 00:03:21.150
  • Blessed or bless-ed are the complete,
  • 00:03:21.160 --> 00:03:24.080
  • those who are without blemish,
  • 00:03:24.090 --> 00:03:25.190
  • the upright, those without spot.
  • 00:03:25.200 --> 00:03:28.110
  • Now that's clearly God's plan for His children,
  • 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:31.060
  • that they are recovered from the power of sin.
  • 00:03:31.070 --> 00:03:34.030
  • And what's written here really reflects the words of Jesus.
  • 00:03:34.040 --> 00:03:37.210
  • Jesus said,
  • 00:03:37.220 --> 00:03:38.280
  • If you love Me, keep my commandments in John 14:15.
  • 00:03:38.290 --> 00:03:42.250
  • Revelation 22:14 says,
  • 00:03:42.260 --> 00:03:45.000
  • Blessed are those who do His commandments,
  • 00:03:45.010 --> 00:03:47.120
  • that they may have the right to the tree of life,
  • 00:03:47.130 --> 00:03:50.010
  • and may enter through the gates into the city.
  • 00:03:50.020 --> 00:03:52.240
  • John wrote in First John 5, verse 3,
  • 00:03:52.250 --> 00:03:55.210
  • For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.
  • 00:03:55.220 --> 00:04:00.040
  • And His commandments are not grievous.
  • 00:04:00.050 --> 00:04:03.150
  • The writer of Psalm 119 understood something,
  • 00:04:03.160 --> 00:04:06.290
  • not just from a theological perspective,
  • 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.210
  • but from his own bitter experience.
  • 00:04:09.220 --> 00:04:12.050
  • Sin does damage.
  • 00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:14.140
  • As Isaiah the prophet said, it separates a person from God.
  • 00:04:14.150 --> 00:04:17.100
  • He said that in Isaiah 59, verse 2.
  • 00:04:17.110 --> 00:04:19.280
  • Jesus came into the world to save us from the penalty of sin.
  • 00:04:19.290 --> 00:04:24.210
  • But not only from its penalty, also from its power.
  • 00:04:24.220 --> 00:04:28.170
  • And also from its presence.
  • 00:04:28.180 --> 00:04:32.050
  • Here's where many people are selling themselves short
  • 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:35.040
  • and selling God short.
  • 00:04:35.050 --> 00:04:37.040
  • Christianity, faith in God,
  • 00:04:37.050 --> 00:04:39.210
  • isn't just a matter of acknowledging God as God,
  • 00:04:39.220 --> 00:04:42.270
  • acknowledging Jesus as Savior,
  • 00:04:42.280 --> 00:04:45.030
  • and then going on with the old life
  • 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:46.190
  • as though God hasn't impacted your life.
  • 00:04:46.200 --> 00:04:49.240
  • Faith in God is about God taking away your old sinful heart
  • 00:04:49.250 --> 00:04:53.260
  • and placing within you a new heart
  • 00:04:53.270 --> 00:04:56.280
  • that beats in harmony with the heart of God.
  • 00:04:56.290 --> 00:04:59.260
  • God makes you new.
  • 00:04:59.270 --> 00:05:02.120
  • And after He does that, He wants to keep you,
  • 00:05:02.130 --> 00:05:04.130
  • to sustain you, to live in you,
  • 00:05:04.140 --> 00:05:07.060
  • so that your life is lived for God's glory.
  • 00:05:07.070 --> 00:05:10.270
  • When God saves you, He puts you on a whole new path.
  • 00:05:10.280 --> 00:05:15.060
  • Now the question is, of course,
  • 00:05:15.070 --> 00:05:17.000
  • how in the world are we to stay on that path?
  • 00:05:17.010 --> 00:05:21.030
  • How can sinful people live new lives?
  • 00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:23.230
  • Psalm 119 answers that question in verse one.
  • 00:05:23.240 --> 00:05:26.220
  • We are to walk in the law of the Lord.
  • 00:05:26.230 --> 00:05:29.160
  • Look what the same writer wrote in Psalm 19,
  • 00:05:29.170 --> 00:05:32.140
  • starting in verse 7.
  • 00:05:32.150 --> 00:05:34.180
  • Psalm 19 and verse 7.
  • 00:05:34.190 --> 00:05:38.030
  • The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul;
  • 00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:41.290
  • the testimony of the Lord is sure,
  • 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:44.130
  • making wise the simple; the statues of the Lord are right,
  • 00:05:44.140 --> 00:05:48.290
  • rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure,
  • 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:52.170
  • enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean,
  • 00:05:52.180 --> 00:05:56.100
  • enduring forever;
  • 00:05:56.110 --> 00:05:57.190
  • the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
  • 00:05:57.200 --> 00:06:02.030
  • It's been said that Psalm 119 is an elaboration
  • 00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:05.110
  • of that passage from Psalm 19.
  • 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:07.200
  • Psalm 19 was written by David,
  • 00:06:07.210 --> 00:06:09.280
  • and although it isn't otherwise made clear,
  • 00:06:09.290 --> 00:06:12.130
  • thematically and linguistically,
  • 00:06:12.140 --> 00:06:14.250
  • it seems that Psalm 119 was written by David as well.
  • 00:06:14.260 --> 00:06:18.020
  • And then back in Psalm 19, he says in verses 10 and 11,
  • 00:06:18.030 --> 00:06:21.260
  • More to be desired are they than gold,
  • 00:06:21.270 --> 00:06:24.150
  • yea, than much fine gold;
  • 00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:27.010
  • sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
  • 00:06:27.020 --> 00:06:31.000
  • Moreover by them Your servant is warned,
  • 00:06:31.010 --> 00:06:33.230
  • and in keeping them there is great reward.
  • 00:06:33.240 --> 00:06:37.160
  • Of course, if David wrote this,
  • 00:06:37.170 --> 00:06:39.050
  • he knew that there's not a person alive
  • 00:06:39.060 --> 00:06:41.110
  • who can save themselves
  • 00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:42.190
  • or somehow muster up the strength to live godly lives.
  • 00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:46.230
  • He's talking about a profound reliance upon the word of God,
  • 00:06:46.240 --> 00:06:51.170
  • and this side of the cross we're able to say,
  • 00:06:51.180 --> 00:06:54.050
  • and upon Jesus the Word made flesh.
  • 00:06:54.060 --> 00:06:57.170
  • There is power in the Word of God.
  • 00:06:57.180 --> 00:07:00.070
  • Paul called the Gospel,
  • 00:07:00.080 --> 00:07:01.160
  • the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes
  • 00:07:01.170 --> 00:07:05.140
  • in Romans 1, verse 16.
  • 00:07:05.150 --> 00:07:07.110
  • And this is reiterated in Psalm 119.
  • 00:07:07.120 --> 00:07:10.090
  • Look at verse 9.
  • 00:07:10.100 --> 00:07:13.040
  • How can a young man cleanse his way?
  • 00:07:13.050 --> 00:07:15.290
  • By taking heed according to Your word.
  • 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:20.030
  • Now, isn't that a profound thought?
  • 00:07:20.040 --> 00:07:22.200
  • And a helpful thought?
  • 00:07:22.210 --> 00:07:24.060
  • If you're looking to live a life of integrity,
  • 00:07:24.070 --> 00:07:26.000
  • a life that honors God,
  • 00:07:26.010 --> 00:07:28.120
  • if you're looking for God to bring out the best in you,
  • 00:07:28.130 --> 00:07:31.060
  • then this is for you.
  • 00:07:31.070 --> 00:07:32.220
  • How can a person cleanse his or her way?
  • 00:07:32.230 --> 00:07:35.160
  • By listening to, by taking note of,
  • 00:07:35.170 --> 00:07:38.210
  • the word of God.
  • 00:07:38.220 --> 00:07:40.220
  • And verse 11 pretty much repeats the thought.
  • 00:07:40.230 --> 00:07:44.030
  • Your word I have hidden in my heart,
  • 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:47.050
  • that I might not sin against You.
  • 00:07:47.060 --> 00:07:50.100
  • So how are we to live without falling into sin?
  • 00:07:50.110 --> 00:07:52.160
  • Only one way, by taking heed to God's Word,
  • 00:07:52.170 --> 00:07:55.270
  • by letting God's Word have its way in our lives.
  • 00:07:55.280 --> 00:07:59.130
  • By making decisions based on the Word of God.
  • 00:07:59.140 --> 00:08:02.090
  • By consulting the Bible and letting the Bible be your guide.
  • 00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:08.000
  • It's too easy today to ignore the Word of God.
  • 00:08:08.010 --> 00:08:10.160
  • Too many distractions today that make it easy
  • 00:08:10.170 --> 00:08:12.120
  • to take your cue from other places.
  • 00:08:12.130 --> 00:08:14.160
  • In this world, you're either going to acknowledge
  • 00:08:14.170 --> 00:08:16.090
  • God's Word as your guide, or, well, something else.
  • 00:08:16.100 --> 00:08:21.000
  • And there's nothing else that brings into your life
  • 00:08:21.010 --> 00:08:23.190
  • the transforming power of God.
  • 00:08:23.200 --> 00:08:25.190
  • Let me suggest something.
  • 00:08:25.200 --> 00:08:27.030
  • If you're not taking time with God's Word,
  • 00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:29.020
  • start doing so right away.
  • 00:08:29.030 --> 00:08:31.290
  • Take time every day.
  • 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.040
  • Every morning read a passage of the Bible.
  • 00:08:34.050 --> 00:08:36.100
  • Let God's Word speak to you.
  • 00:08:36.110 --> 00:08:38.120
  • Let God's Word fill you, cleanse your mind with God's principles.
  • 00:08:38.130 --> 00:08:43.090
  • Have His Word on the tip of your tongue.
  • 00:08:43.100 --> 00:08:45.050
  • Take your Bible with you.
  • 00:08:45.060 --> 00:08:46.220
  • Read it when you get a few moments during the day.
  • 00:08:46.230 --> 00:08:49.070
  • Memorize Bible verses that you know will be helpful to you.
  • 00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:52.180
  • Isaiah wrote that God will keep in perfect peace
  • 00:08:52.190 --> 00:08:56.140
  • the person whose mind has stayed on God.
  • 00:08:56.150 --> 00:08:58.270
  • Depending on the research you read,
  • 00:08:58.280 --> 00:09:00.100
  • it seems that most Americans never
  • 00:09:00.110 --> 00:09:02.240
  • or very rarely read the Bible.
  • 00:09:02.250 --> 00:09:07.210
  • And that could explain a lot.
  • 00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:09.240
  • How's it working out for you?
  • 00:09:09.250 --> 00:09:11.280
  • If you'll take time in the word of God,
  • 00:09:11.290 --> 00:09:13.110
  • if you'll read the Bible regularly,
  • 00:09:13.120 --> 00:09:16.120
  • systematically, you'll find the peace and the power
  • 00:09:16.130 --> 00:09:20.090
  • and the presence of God in your life in an amazing way.
  • 00:09:20.100 --> 00:09:25.120
  • In a moment, in Psalm 119,
  • 00:09:25.130 --> 00:09:28.080
  • does the Bible writer exaggerate to make his point?
  • 00:09:28.090 --> 00:09:32.040
  • (Music begins) I'll be right back.
  • 00:09:32.050 --> 00:09:33.170
  • (Music increases and ends)
  • 00:09:33.180 --> 00:09:41.210
  • -John Bradshaw: There are hundreds, even thousands,
  • 00:09:42.280 --> 00:09:44.170
  • of promises in the Bible (Music)

  • (Music)
  • 00:10:13.110 --> 00:10:18.030
  • -Man: What does the Bible say about astrology?
  • 00:10:18.040 --> 00:10:20.160
  • -Man: Why do bad things happen to good people?
  • 00:10:25.010 --> 00:10:27.090
  • -Child: What color is Jesus?
  • 00:10:33.170 --> 00:10:36.000
  • -John Bradshaw: If you have a question,
  • 00:10:36.010 --> 00:10:37.050
  • we'd love to find an answer for you from the Bible.
  • 00:10:37.060 --> 00:10:39.290
  • Line Upon Line from It Is Written TV.
  • 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:42.290
  • -John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me on It Is Written.
  • 00:10:43.230 --> 00:10:46.200
  • We're looking at Psalm 119 in our ongoing series,
  • 00:10:46.210 --> 00:10:50.180
  • Great Chapters of the Bible.
  • 00:10:50.190 --> 00:10:52.220
  • It's the longest chapter in Scripture at 176 verses,
  • 00:10:52.230 --> 00:10:56.120
  • almost two-and-a-half thousand words.
  • 00:10:56.130 --> 00:10:59.110
  • It's been said that the great missionary David Livingston
  • 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:01.210
  • memorized the entire psalm,
  • 00:11:01.220 --> 00:11:03.270
  • a chapter that would take you around 15 minutes to recite
  • 00:11:03.280 --> 00:11:06.270
  • or to read out loud.
  • 00:11:06.280 --> 00:11:08.270
  • Again and again, Psalm 119 speaks about God's word,
  • 00:11:08.280 --> 00:11:13.030
  • His commandments, His statutes, His law.
  • 00:11:13.040 --> 00:11:16.160
  • This is the Bible writer recommending the Bible
  • 00:11:16.170 --> 00:11:19.020
  • as the source of strength for believers,
  • 00:11:19.030 --> 00:11:22.030
  • as the means of receiving not only powerful holy living,
  • 00:11:22.040 --> 00:11:26.070
  • but also hope in this world and in the world to come.
  • 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:29.180
  • Notice what it says starting in verse 14
  • 00:11:29.190 --> 00:11:33.110
  • and think about the words used.
  • 00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:36.160
  • I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
  • 00:11:36.170 --> 00:11:39.240
  • as much as in all riches.
  • 00:11:39.250 --> 00:11:42.120
  • I will meditate on Your precepts,
  • 00:11:42.130 --> 00:11:44.210
  • and contemplate Your ways.
  • 00:11:44.220 --> 00:11:46.250
  • I will delight myself in Your statues;
  • 00:11:46.260 --> 00:11:49.280
  • I will not forget Your word.
  • 00:11:49.290 --> 00:11:52.150
  • I've rejoiced in Your testimonies
  • 00:11:52.160 --> 00:11:54.280
  • as much as in all riches?
  • 00:11:54.290 --> 00:11:58.060
  • Now, David was a wealthy man.
  • 00:11:58.070 --> 00:11:59.260
  • Here he says that God's Word meant more to him
  • 00:11:59.270 --> 00:12:02.100
  • than all the wealth he could accumulate.
  • 00:12:02.110 --> 00:12:05.040
  • So, let's ask an honest question here.
  • 00:12:05.050 --> 00:12:07.030
  • Is this just hyperbole?
  • 00:12:07.040 --> 00:12:09.060
  • Is David simply exaggerating to make a point?
  • 00:12:09.070 --> 00:12:12.260
  • No, he's not.
  • 00:12:12.270 --> 00:12:14.070
  • For him, God's Word was the most precious commodity he knew of.
  • 00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:19.050
  • For those who live in parts of the world where the Bible
  • 00:12:19.060 --> 00:12:21.000
  • is freely available and you can live your faith in freedom,
  • 00:12:21.010 --> 00:12:24.040
  • it might be less easy or less common
  • 00:12:24.050 --> 00:12:27.150
  • to feel that way about the Bible.
  • 00:12:27.160 --> 00:12:30.000
  • But David was deadly serious about this.
  • 00:12:30.010 --> 00:12:33.090
  • And what did he do with the Word of God?
  • 00:12:33.100 --> 00:12:36.010
  • Well, he meditated on it.
  • 00:12:36.020 --> 00:12:38.110
  • He contemplated it.
  • 00:12:38.120 --> 00:12:40.040
  • He thought about it.
  • 00:12:40.050 --> 00:12:41.130
  • He chewed it over in his mind.
  • 00:12:41.140 --> 00:12:43.230
  • He was determined not to forget it.
  • 00:12:43.240 --> 00:12:47.060
  • You know, this modern world
  • 00:12:47.070 --> 00:12:48.060
  • where our minds seem to be always occupied.
  • 00:12:48.070 --> 00:12:50.180
  • We're checking social media or, or email.
  • 00:12:50.190 --> 00:12:53.200
  • People drive along listening to the radio
  • 00:12:53.210 --> 00:12:56.010
  • or to music they brought with them.
  • 00:12:56.020 --> 00:12:58.150
  • Life is full of flashing lights and distractions.
  • 00:12:58.160 --> 00:13:01.240
  • It's not nearly as easy as it used to be
  • 00:13:01.250 --> 00:13:03.180
  • to simply think about God's Word.
  • 00:13:03.190 --> 00:13:06.040
  • Less people do it.
  • 00:13:06.050 --> 00:13:07.150
  • To let God's Word wash over your mind
  • 00:13:07.160 --> 00:13:09.290
  • and influence your daily life.
  • 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:12.120
  • Modern life conspires against faith.
  • 00:13:12.130 --> 00:13:16.000
  • I've been told by people a thousand times,
  • 00:13:16.010 --> 00:13:18.080
  • I'm just too busy.
  • 00:13:18.090 --> 00:13:19.130
  • I just don't have time.
  • 00:13:19.140 --> 00:13:21.200
  • Who do you think worked it out that way?
  • 00:13:21.210 --> 00:13:24.030
  • The devil does not want you to read the Bible,
  • 00:13:24.040 --> 00:13:26.250
  • and he's figured out a thousand ways
  • 00:13:26.260 --> 00:13:28.110
  • to keep you from getting into it.
  • 00:13:28.120 --> 00:13:30.070
  • But David, he meditated on God's Word.
  • 00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:34.000
  • Now don't get this confused with Eastern religious practices.
  • 00:13:34.010 --> 00:13:37.050
  • Meditating on the Bible has nothing to do
  • 00:13:37.060 --> 00:13:39.170
  • with emptying your mind or repeating a mantra.
  • 00:13:39.180 --> 00:13:42.260
  • It's about focusing on the Word of God.
  • 00:13:42.270 --> 00:13:45.100
  • Thinking about Scripture.
  • 00:13:45.110 --> 00:13:46.280
  • Letting it sink into your mind.
  • 00:13:46.290 --> 00:13:48.260
  • Ask yourself, when did you last really focus on God's Word?
  • 00:13:48.270 --> 00:13:54.250
  • Thinking about what God is actually saying to you
  • 00:13:54.260 --> 00:13:57.210
  • through the Bible?
  • 00:13:57.220 --> 00:13:58.280
  • Considering what a verse really says and wondering with God
  • 00:13:58.290 --> 00:14:01.250
  • about how that verse or passage should be applied to your life?
  • 00:14:01.260 --> 00:14:05.220
  • That's the meditation being written about.
  • 00:14:05.230 --> 00:14:08.050
  • That is healthy and it's helpful.
  • 00:14:08.060 --> 00:14:11.150
  • Now it says in verse 24, Psalm 119, verse 24.
  • 00:14:11.160 --> 00:14:15.240
  • Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.
  • 00:14:15.250 --> 00:14:20.180
  • Now see how practical that is?
  • 00:14:20.190 --> 00:14:22.110
  • The word of God is to guide you.
  • 00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:23.220
  • It advises you.
  • 00:14:23.230 --> 00:14:25.180
  • You make your decisions for life
  • 00:14:25.190 --> 00:14:28.060
  • on the basis of what God suggests.
  • 00:14:28.070 --> 00:14:31.110
  • God wants you and me to be just like that.
  • 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:33.120
  • When it's decision time, it's Bible time.
  • 00:14:33.130 --> 00:14:36.000
  • What does God have to say about this decision in your life?
  • 00:14:36.010 --> 00:14:39.000
  • You'll know if you take the time to read and pray.
  • 00:14:39.010 --> 00:14:43.010
  • Now, look at this passage.
  • 00:14:43.020 --> 00:14:44.170
  • It is powerful.
  • 00:14:44.180 --> 00:14:46.010
  • We start in verse 34.
  • 00:14:46.020 --> 00:14:48.250
  • Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;
  • 00:14:48.260 --> 00:14:52.150
  • indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
  • 00:14:52.160 --> 00:14:55.100
  • Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
  • 00:14:55.110 --> 00:14:57.280
  • for I delight in it.
  • 00:14:57.290 --> 00:14:59.230
  • Incline my heart to Your testimonies,
  • 00:14:59.240 --> 00:15:02.120
  • and not to covetousness.
  • 00:15:02.130 --> 00:15:04.240
  • You see what the writer is saying here?
  • 00:15:04.250 --> 00:15:06.190
  • I will keep your law, that's my will, my purpose.
  • 00:15:06.200 --> 00:15:09.280
  • But, God, make me walk in the right way,
  • 00:15:09.290 --> 00:15:13.160
  • bend my heart in Your direction.
  • 00:15:13.170 --> 00:15:16.050
  • David knew what you and I need to know for sure.
  • 00:15:16.060 --> 00:15:18.190
  • Desires to do right in the sight of God are well and good,
  • 00:15:18.200 --> 00:15:22.130
  • but without God taking the reins of your heart,
  • 00:15:22.140 --> 00:15:25.080
  • without God having possession of your will,
  • 00:15:25.090 --> 00:15:28.000
  • if you don't surrender to God and let Him have your will,
  • 00:15:28.010 --> 00:15:30.180
  • those desires to live God's way
  • 00:15:30.190 --> 00:15:32.150
  • are only going to end up in frustration.
  • 00:15:32.160 --> 00:15:37.040
  • Too many people fail spiritually where they might succeed
  • 00:15:37.050 --> 00:15:41.050
  • because they don't surrender their will to God.
  • 00:15:41.060 --> 00:15:43.100
  • If you're not asking and asking and asking God
  • 00:15:43.110 --> 00:15:46.200
  • to take your heart and your will,
  • 00:15:46.210 --> 00:15:48.260
  • it's time to do that right now.
  • 00:15:48.270 --> 00:15:50.090
  • Now, as the twelfth set of eight verses begins in Psalm 119,
  • 00:15:50.100 --> 00:15:55.160
  • you read this in verse 89.
  • 00:15:55.170 --> 00:15:58.190
  • Forever, O Lord, Your Word is settled in heaven.
  • 00:15:58.200 --> 00:16:04.080
  • Now this speaks to the eternal nature of God's word.
  • 00:16:04.090 --> 00:16:06.260
  • Forever.
  • 00:16:06.270 --> 00:16:08.230
  • It's much like what Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 40 in verse 8.
  • 00:16:08.240 --> 00:16:12.220
  • The grass withers, the flower fades,
  • 00:16:12.230 --> 00:16:15.240
  • but the word of our God stands forever.
  • 00:16:15.250 --> 00:16:18.100
  • It's like what Jesus said in Matthew 5 in verse 18.
  • 00:16:18.110 --> 00:16:21.110
  • For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away,
  • 00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:25.100
  • one jot or one tittle will by no means
  • 00:16:25.110 --> 00:16:28.200
  • pass from the law till all is fulfilled.
  • 00:16:28.210 --> 00:16:32.010
  • You don't want to make the mistake of thinking
  • 00:16:32.020 --> 00:16:33.210
  • that somehow God's word or God's law isn't important today.
  • 00:16:33.220 --> 00:16:39.060
  • The psalmist understood what Jesus understood.
  • 00:16:39.070 --> 00:16:42.220
  • God's word lasts forever.
  • 00:16:42.230 --> 00:16:45.120
  • It matters forever.
  • 00:16:45.130 --> 00:16:48.050
  • No matter what the skeptics say or what the critics say,
  • 00:16:48.060 --> 00:16:52.070
  • God's word is as relevant today as it has ever been.
  • 00:16:52.080 --> 00:16:57.160
  • In a moment, perhaps the most (Music begins)
  • 00:16:57.170 --> 00:16:59.250
  • well-known verse in Psalm 119.
  • 00:16:59.260 --> 00:17:03.090
  • I'll be right back.
  • 00:17:03.100 --> 00:17:04.000
  • (Music increases and ends)
  • 00:17:04.010 --> 00:17:11.260

  • 00:18:14.080 --> 00:18:16.040
  • We're continuing our series, Great Chapters of the Bible.
  • 00:18:16.050 --> 00:18:20.080
  • And today we're looking at Psalm 119.
  • 00:18:20.090 --> 00:18:23.000
  • It's a powerful chapter of the Bible.
  • 00:18:23.010 --> 00:18:25.170
  • It's the longest psalm and every verse but one
  • 00:18:25.180 --> 00:18:29.190
  • of its 176 verses speaks in some way to God's Word
  • 00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:34.090
  • or His law or to God's revelation to humanity.
  • 00:18:34.100 --> 00:18:38.010
  • Some quick points from Psalm 119.
  • 00:18:38.020 --> 00:18:40.060
  • This is verse 97.
  • 00:18:40.070 --> 00:18:42.070
  • Oh, how I love Your law!
  • 00:18:42.080 --> 00:18:44.080
  • It is my meditation all the day.
  • 00:18:44.090 --> 00:18:47.180
  • And David meditated on God's Word
  • 00:18:47.190 --> 00:18:49.150
  • and here he says, on God's law.
  • 00:18:49.160 --> 00:18:51.230
  • He thought about it.
  • 00:18:51.240 --> 00:18:53.020
  • He let it sink deep into his mind.
  • 00:18:53.030 --> 00:18:56.150
  • In verse 98, he says he has more understanding than his enemies.
  • 00:18:56.160 --> 00:19:01.070
  • In verse 99, more understanding than his teachers.
  • 00:19:01.080 --> 00:19:04.180
  • And in verse 100, more understanding than the ancients.
  • 00:19:04.190 --> 00:19:08.240
  • Why?
  • 00:19:08.250 --> 00:19:10.040
  • Because he keeps God's precepts.
  • 00:19:10.050 --> 00:19:13.150
  • The Bible will open up your mind.
  • 00:19:13.160 --> 00:19:16.110
  • I met a woman recently who couldn't read at all
  • 00:19:16.120 --> 00:19:20.000
  • until she was in her late thirties,
  • 00:19:20.010 --> 00:19:21.190
  • and she learned to read when she got a Bible
  • 00:19:21.200 --> 00:19:25.260
  • and began to read the Bible.
  • 00:19:25.270 --> 00:19:27.260
  • Changed her life.
  • 00:19:27.270 --> 00:19:28.290
  • I could tell you about a young man who never thought
  • 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:31.050
  • it was possible that someone as slow as him
  • 00:19:31.060 --> 00:19:33.230
  • could ever go to medical school.
  • 00:19:33.240 --> 00:19:35.150
  • He wasn't a smart kid.
  • 00:19:35.160 --> 00:19:37.140
  • But Bible study opened up his mind
  • 00:19:37.150 --> 00:19:40.200
  • and expanded his understanding.
  • 00:19:40.210 --> 00:19:42.270
  • There is power in the Word of God.
  • 00:19:42.280 --> 00:19:45.280
  • There's a similar thought expressed in verse 130.
  • 00:19:45.290 --> 00:19:48.150
  • The entrance of Your words gives light;
  • 00:19:48.160 --> 00:19:52.010
  • it gives understanding to the simple.
  • 00:19:52.020 --> 00:19:55.000
  • Now verse 105 is likely the best-known verse in Psalm 119.
  • 00:19:55.010 --> 00:20:00.250
  • It says,
  • 00:20:00.260 --> 00:20:02.040
  • Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
  • 00:20:02.050 --> 00:20:08.140
  • And if you could sum up Psalm 119 in one verse,
  • 00:20:08.150 --> 00:20:12.070
  • this might be the one verse that you'd use.
  • 00:20:12.080 --> 00:20:15.190
  • That's what the Bible ought to be,
  • 00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:16.290
  • your light in a dark world,
  • 00:20:17.000 --> 00:20:18.270
  • that guide you need to guide you in times
  • 00:20:18.280 --> 00:20:21.000
  • when you're not sure which way to go.
  • 00:20:21.010 --> 00:20:23.070
  • A light on your pathway.
  • 00:20:23.080 --> 00:20:26.010
  • Why does God call it that?
  • 00:20:26.020 --> 00:20:27.120
  • A lamp and a light?
  • 00:20:27.130 --> 00:20:29.010
  • The God of heaven is our only hope in this world of sin.
  • 00:20:29.020 --> 00:20:32.180
  • And it is a world of sin.
  • 00:20:32.190 --> 00:20:33.240
  • Just look around.
  • 00:20:33.250 --> 00:20:35.070
  • If you haven't experienced that in your life,
  • 00:20:35.080 --> 00:20:36.260
  • then you've seen it in the life of someone that you care about.
  • 00:20:36.270 --> 00:20:40.010
  • But God's word can guide you.
  • 00:20:40.020 --> 00:20:41.210
  • It can offer you hope.
  • 00:20:41.220 --> 00:20:43.030
  • It'll keep you.
  • 00:20:43.040 --> 00:20:43.230
  • Where do I go with my life?
  • 00:20:43.240 --> 00:20:45.230
  • God's word will tell me.
  • 00:20:45.240 --> 00:20:47.090
  • How can I have a hope in this world?
  • 00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:49.010
  • I find that hope in God's word.
  • 00:20:49.020 --> 00:20:51.030
  • How do I know the right direction to go?
  • 00:20:51.040 --> 00:20:53.020
  • God will lead me through His Word.
  • 00:20:53.030 --> 00:20:56.190
  • And what this means is that God
  • 00:20:56.200 --> 00:20:58.040
  • wants to have a personal relationship with you,
  • 00:20:58.050 --> 00:21:00.150
  • where He speaks to you through Scripture.
  • 00:21:00.160 --> 00:21:03.160
  • He wants you to be acquainted with what the Bible says.
  • 00:21:03.170 --> 00:21:06.140
  • Not merely doctrinally, as important as that is,
  • 00:21:06.150 --> 00:21:10.010
  • but experientially.
  • 00:21:10.020 --> 00:21:12.200
  • How well do you know God?
  • 00:21:12.210 --> 00:21:15.000
  • A big problem in this world
  • 00:21:15.010 --> 00:21:16.000
  • is that people simply don't know God.
  • 00:21:16.010 --> 00:21:18.090
  • They've heard about Him.
  • 00:21:18.100 --> 00:21:19.240
  • But often it's a very negative report.
  • 00:21:19.250 --> 00:21:22.230
  • Have you taken the time to really get to know God?
  • 00:21:22.240 --> 00:21:24.280
  • Imagine if the answer to that question is no.
  • 00:21:24.290 --> 00:21:28.050
  • In the Book of Job you'll find this encouragement.
  • 00:21:28.060 --> 00:21:30.020
  • It's Job 22:21.
  • 00:21:30.030 --> 00:21:32.020
  • Acquaint yourself with Him and be at peace;
  • 00:21:32.030 --> 00:21:35.120
  • thereby good will come to you.
  • 00:21:35.130 --> 00:21:38.130
  • In other words, get to know God,
  • 00:21:38.140 --> 00:21:41.100
  • and when you do, peace will flood your life.
  • 00:21:41.110 --> 00:21:45.170
  • Verse 136 of Psalm 119 is interesting.
  • 00:21:45.180 --> 00:21:50.150
  • It says, Rivers of water run down from my eyes,
  • 00:21:50.160 --> 00:21:54.290
  • because men do not keep Your law.
  • 00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:57.100
  • What do you think he'd say today?
  • 00:21:57.110 --> 00:22:00.140
  • Now Christians who emphasize grace,
  • 00:22:00.150 --> 00:22:02.180
  • and, honestly, that should be all Christians,
  • 00:22:02.190 --> 00:22:04.190
  • shouldn't get nervous about this emphasis on the law.
  • 00:22:04.200 --> 00:22:07.090
  • No, the Bible writer isn't talking about salvation by law
  • 00:22:07.100 --> 00:22:10.280
  • or salvation by works.
  • 00:22:10.290 --> 00:22:12.160
  • He's talking about the beauty and the power of God's word.
  • 00:22:12.170 --> 00:22:15.280
  • How much he loves it.
  • 00:22:15.290 --> 00:22:17.010
  • And the powerful effect it has on his life.
  • 00:22:17.020 --> 00:22:19.140
  • The psalmist would recognize that God's law
  • 00:22:19.150 --> 00:22:21.110
  • and God's grace are in perfect harmony.
  • 00:22:21.120 --> 00:22:23.250
  • It's not a matter of one or the other,
  • 00:22:23.260 --> 00:22:25.290
  • it's both and, not either or.
  • 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:28.180
  • You can row your boat with just the oar of grace
  • 00:22:28.190 --> 00:22:32.050
  • or with just the oar of obedience,
  • 00:22:32.060 --> 00:22:34.130
  • and in both cases you'll find yourself
  • 00:22:34.140 --> 00:22:37.090
  • going around in circles.
  • 00:22:37.100 --> 00:22:38.140
  • That's what happens when you row with just one oar.
  • 00:22:38.150 --> 00:22:41.140
  • But, but row with both oars, with grace and obedience,
  • 00:22:41.150 --> 00:22:47.120
  • and you'll be led by God in that straight line of faith and love.
  • 00:22:47.130 --> 00:22:52.150
  • Now notice verse 146 with me.
  • 00:22:52.160 --> 00:22:56.030
  • I cry out to You; save me, and I will keep your testimonies.
  • 00:22:56.040 --> 00:23:02.070
  • That's clearly expressed.
  • 00:23:02.080 --> 00:23:03.170
  • You save me and my response to You is that I obey You.
  • 00:23:03.180 --> 00:23:08.000
  • Obedience is the response of the sinner
  • 00:23:08.010 --> 00:23:09.210
  • to the salvation that God grants.
  • 00:23:09.220 --> 00:23:11.250
  • It's not the root of salvation,
  • 00:23:11.260 --> 00:23:13.210
  • but obedience is the fruit of salvation.
  • 00:23:13.220 --> 00:23:16.290
  • But one more verse to look at in Psalm 119,
  • 00:23:17.000 --> 00:23:20.060
  • that great testimony to the transforming power
  • 00:23:20.070 --> 00:23:23.050
  • of the Word of God.
  • 00:23:23.060 --> 00:23:24.120
  • Verse 165.
  • 00:23:24.130 --> 00:23:26.270
  • The writer says, Great peace have those who love Your law,
  • 00:23:26.280 --> 00:23:32.030
  • and nothing causes them to stumble.
  • 00:23:32.040 --> 00:23:35.160
  • If you want peace in your life,
  • 00:23:35.170 --> 00:23:37.220
  • and everyone does, choose to love God's law,
  • 00:23:37.230 --> 00:23:41.160
  • God's word, His testimonies, His precepts,
  • 00:23:41.170 --> 00:23:44.210
  • His judgments, His statutes.
  • 00:23:44.220 --> 00:23:46.270
  • In this psalm,
  • 00:23:46.280 --> 00:23:48.030
  • David isn't simply saying that he respects the Bible,
  • 00:23:48.040 --> 00:23:50.290
  • he's saying he loves the Word of God.
  • 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:53.130
  • And it brings assurance and peace into his life.
  • 00:23:53.140 --> 00:23:57.190
  • Verse 165 is much like the thought
  • 00:23:57.200 --> 00:24:00.080
  • that Isaiah placed into Isaiah 32:17.
  • 00:24:00.090 --> 00:24:03.240
  • The work of righteousness will be peace,
  • 00:24:03.250 --> 00:24:07.010
  • and the effect of righteousness, quiet and assurance forever.
  • 00:24:07.020 --> 00:24:11.110
  • It's like what Paul wrote in Romans 5:1,
  • 00:24:11.120 --> 00:24:14.010
  • Therefore, being justified by faith,
  • 00:24:14.020 --> 00:24:16.270
  • we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:24:16.280 --> 00:24:21.120
  • When you make God's word your guide,
  • 00:24:21.130 --> 00:24:23.220
  • the authority for your life,
  • 00:24:23.230 --> 00:24:25.180
  • when you choose to allow God to have your heart,
  • 00:24:25.190 --> 00:24:28.040
  • that's when you have peace.
  • 00:24:28.050 --> 00:24:29.170
  • Let me ask you.
  • 00:24:29.180 --> 00:24:31.060
  • How's that working out for you?
  • 00:24:31.070 --> 00:24:33.060
  • It's not reasonable to expect real peace in your life
  • 00:24:33.070 --> 00:24:35.190
  • if you're not making time for God and His Word.
  • 00:24:35.200 --> 00:24:38.160
  • This great chapter of the Bible is an encouragement to everyone.
  • 00:24:38.170 --> 00:24:43.090
  • Incorporate the Bible into your life.
  • 00:24:43.100 --> 00:24:45.280
  • Read it.
  • 00:24:45.290 --> 00:24:47.090
  • Dwell on it.
  • 00:24:47.100 --> 00:24:48.180
  • You'll learn to love it, and you'll love its Author.
  • 00:24:48.190 --> 00:24:52.100
  • Our time on this earth is just so short.
  • 00:24:52.110 --> 00:24:54.290
  • People can make time for everything,
  • 00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:56.270
  • social media, and, and, and binge watching television series
  • 00:24:56.280 --> 00:25:00.150
  • and sport and who knows what else.
  • 00:25:00.160 --> 00:25:04.180
  • But is there time in your life for the most important thing?
  • 00:25:04.190 --> 00:25:08.140
  • Hide God's word in your heart.
  • 00:25:08.150 --> 00:25:10.050
  • Let if fortify you, strengthen you.
  • 00:25:10.060 --> 00:25:12.110
  • Let it fill your mind.
  • 00:25:12.120 --> 00:25:13.280
  • Follow where it leads you,
  • 00:25:13.290 --> 00:25:15.280
  • and you'll find that you have the Word made Flesh,
  • 00:25:15.290 --> 00:25:18.000
  • Jesus, present in your life like never before.

  • and preserved it down through the ages.
  • 00:25:59.220 --> 00:26:02.190
  • Give us grace to hide Your Word in our heart,
  • 00:26:02.200 --> 00:26:04.270
  • let Your Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
  • 00:26:04.280 --> 00:26:10.090
  • Let it cleanse our ways.
  • 00:26:10.100 --> 00:26:12.240
  • Let it strengthen us with Your promises and with faith in You.
  • 00:26:12.250 --> 00:26:17.280
  • Grant that it would connect us with heaven
  • 00:26:17.290 --> 00:26:20.190
  • and bring into our lives the very presence of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:26:20.200 --> 00:26:24.180
  • We thank you for Psalm 119,
  • 00:26:24.190 --> 00:26:26.200
  • truly a great chapter of the Bible.
  • 00:26:26.210 --> 00:26:29.080
  • Inspire us to know You more, to know Your Word,
  • 00:26:29.090 --> 00:26:32.140
  • to read it, to live by it.
  • 00:26:32.150 --> 00:26:35.050
  • And then through it, to be ready to meet
  • 00:26:35.060 --> 00:26:37.210
  • Jesus when He comes back to take us home.
  • 00:26:37.220 --> 00:26:40.060
  • We thank You today and we pray in Jesus' name,
  • 00:26:40.070 --> 00:26:43.210
  • Amen.
  • 00:26:43.220 --> 00:26:45.220
  • Thanks so much for joining me.
  • 00:26:45.230 --> 00:26:46.260
  • I'm looking forward to seeing you next time.
  • 00:26:46.270 --> 00:26:48.280
  • Until then, remember,
  • 00:26:48.290 --> 00:26:50.290
  • it is written,
  • 00:26:51.000 --> 00:26:52.180
  • "Man shall not live by bread alone,
  • 00:26:52.190 --> 00:26:55.010
  • but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God."
  • 00:26:55.020 --> 00:26:59.110
  • (Music increases, changes, and ends)
  • 00:26:59.120 --> 00:27:00.140
