  • Amen!
  • 00:02:01.140 --> 00:02:09.040
  • Bobby Schuller: This is the day the Lord has made.
  • 00:02:10.110 --> 00:02:12.060
  • We will rejoice and be glad in it.
  • 00:02:12.070 --> 00:02:15.220
  • Good morning.
  • 00:02:15.230 --> 00:02:18.010
  • Hannah Schuller: Welcome, church family and visitors.
  • 00:02:18.020 --> 00:02:20.060
  • It is always a joy to be with you, and we do not believe it's
  • 00:02:20.070 --> 00:02:24.210
  • an accident that you are here right now or tuned in with us.
  • 00:02:24.220 --> 00:02:29.010
  • God wants to speak to you today.
  • 00:02:29.020 --> 00:02:31.280
  • Thank you again for being here.
  • 00:02:31.290 --> 00:02:33.260
  • You are so loved.
  • 00:02:33.270 --> 00:02:35.240
  • Bobby: Yeah, we really are so glad everyone is here.
  • 00:02:35.250 --> 00:02:37.180
  • We believe everyone is here for a reason.
  • 00:02:37.190 --> 00:02:40.070
  • God's going to do something good in your life today, amen?
  • 00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.020
  • And let's begin with a word of prayer.
  • 00:02:44.030 --> 00:02:46.210
  • Father, we thank you that this is your house, your place,
  • 00:02:46.220 --> 00:02:50.140
  • and we are here to worship you.
  • 00:02:50.150 --> 00:02:52.100
  • Everything we're doing, God, it's for you.
  • 00:02:52.110 --> 00:02:54.060
  • We pray, Father, that this would--your name would be
  • 00:02:54.070 --> 00:02:56.200
  • honored, your name would be praised, and I also pray that
  • 00:02:56.210 --> 00:02:58.240
  • every single person under the sound of my voice would leave
  • 00:02:58.250 --> 00:03:02.030
  • here full of joy, full of life, encouraged.
  • 00:03:02.040 --> 00:03:05.230
  • And Father, we thank you.
  • 00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:07.030
  • It's in Jesus's name we pray, amen?
  • 00:03:07.040 --> 00:03:09.130
  • Hannah: Amen.
  • 00:03:09.140 --> 00:03:10.230
  • Turn around and shake the hand of the person next to you
  • 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:12.220
  • and say, "God loves you and so do I."
  • 00:03:12.230 --> 00:03:15.080

  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:09:58.070 --> 00:10:06.030
  • Luke Lezon: So many of us would admit that our lives
  • 00:10:08.150 --> 00:10:10.060
  • aren't perfect, but here we are trying to present
  • 00:10:10.070 --> 00:10:12.090
  • our lives as perfect.
  • 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:14.180
  • announcer: Luke Lezon is a pastor and author from Atlanta,
  • 00:10:14.190 --> 00:10:17.220
  • Georgia, and a leader of The Alternative.
  • 00:10:17.230 --> 00:10:21.040
  • A few years ago, Luke dealt with some inexplicable health issues
  • 00:10:21.050 --> 00:10:25.030
  • which spiraled him into what seemed like a messy life.
  • 00:10:25.040 --> 00:10:28.210
  • His new book, "Your Mess Matters," looks at how our messy
  • 00:10:28.220 --> 00:10:32.090
  • lives are God's way of molding us for something even greater.
  • 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:36.160
  • Luke: It's going to change your life.
  • 00:10:36.170 --> 00:10:38.070
  • This book is all about Jesus and him alone.
  • 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:40.250
  • announcer: Please welcome Luke Lezon.
  • 00:10:40.260 --> 00:10:43.260
  • Bobby: Luke, hi.
  • 00:10:43.270 --> 00:10:45.190
  • Luke: So good to be here. Thank you for having me.
  • 00:10:45.200 --> 00:10:47.120
  • Yeah.
  • 00:10:47.130 --> 00:10:49.250
  • Bobby: So you and your wife, you guys planted this church,
  • 00:10:49.260 --> 00:10:52.150
  • The Alternative, which was an amazing, pretty awesome
  • 00:10:52.160 --> 00:10:55.180
  • move of God in Atlanta.
  • 00:10:55.190 --> 00:10:57.140
  • Why do we start there?
  • 00:10:57.150 --> 00:10:59.000
  • Tell us a little bit about that church.
  • 00:10:59.010 --> 00:11:00.160
  • Luke: You know, it was awesome, Bobby.
  • 00:11:00.170 --> 00:11:02.020
  • We just felt a need in our community to see young people
  • 00:11:02.030 --> 00:11:04.130
  • come to know Christ in a way that was authentic and not
  • 00:11:04.140 --> 00:11:08.070
  • something that we had really seen in our community.
  • 00:11:08.080 --> 00:11:11.030
  • We wanted to unite churches that were there so that everyone knew
  • 00:11:11.040 --> 00:11:14.170
  • we were playing on the same team, and we just saw God do
  • 00:11:14.180 --> 00:11:17.140
  • incredible things.
  • 00:11:17.150 --> 00:11:19.130
  • So many people were coming in from all over the country,
  • 00:11:19.140 --> 00:11:21.200
  • different countries, and it was just incredible to see
  • 00:11:21.210 --> 00:11:24.000
  • what God did.
  • 00:11:24.010 --> 00:11:25.190
  • Bobby: How did people from different countries hear about
  • 00:11:25.200 --> 00:11:27.140
  • what was happening at your church in Atlanta?
  • 00:11:27.150 --> 00:11:28.270
  • Luke: Well, you know, us millennials,
  • 00:11:28.280 --> 00:11:30.160
  • we like social media.
  • 00:11:30.170 --> 00:11:32.120
  • So yeah, I don't know if you guys have heard of that.
  • 00:11:32.130 --> 00:11:34.070
  • It's crazy.
  • 00:11:34.080 --> 00:11:35.270
  • So the kids are on their phones these days and they're on there
  • 00:11:35.280 --> 00:11:40.190
  • unfortunately almost more than they are interacting
  • 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:42.280
  • with actual human beings.
  • 00:11:42.290 --> 00:11:44.250
  • And so they were seeing what was happening there and that drew
  • 00:11:44.260 --> 00:11:47.250
  • them to Atlanta, and that's where they found interaction
  • 00:11:47.260 --> 00:11:51.210
  • with other people that were going through the same things
  • 00:11:51.220 --> 00:11:53.220
  • they were going through and really found Christ.
  • 00:11:53.230 --> 00:11:56.100
  • And so we rejoice because of that.
  • 00:11:56.110 --> 00:11:58.060
  • Bobby: That's awesome.
  • 00:11:58.070 --> 00:12:00.030
  • So you guys are having this great breakthrough.
  • 00:12:00.040 --> 00:12:02.010
  • You're in your 20s leading this church and just thrilled about,
  • 00:12:02.020 --> 00:12:05.220
  • you know, the move of God, and then you had this bizarre
  • 00:12:05.230 --> 00:12:09.100
  • illness that really messed you up pretty bad.
  • 00:12:09.110 --> 00:12:12.110
  • Luke: Yeah, it was crazy.
  • 00:12:12.120 --> 00:12:13.240
  • You know, the doctors--we started to notice that I was
  • 00:12:13.250 --> 00:12:16.100
  • losing weight and I was thinking, "Wow,
  • 00:12:16.110 --> 00:12:18.090
  • I'm getting really in shape."
  • 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:20.030
  • And my--I was like, "This is amazing, isn't it?
  • 00:12:20.040 --> 00:12:22.220
  • Isn't it, honey?"
  • 00:12:22.230 --> 00:12:24.130
  • And then I just kept losing it and I was like,
  • 00:12:24.140 --> 00:12:26.150
  • "This is not normal."
  • 00:12:26.160 --> 00:12:28.050
  • And so we went to a doctor, found out that I had all these
  • 00:12:28.060 --> 00:12:30.170
  • different infections in my body.
  • 00:12:30.180 --> 00:12:32.180
  • I ended up losing 50 pounds that I didn't really have
  • 00:12:32.190 --> 00:12:34.250
  • to lose at the time.
  • 00:12:34.260 --> 00:12:36.200
  • And so by the absolute grace of God through doctors and--
  • 00:12:36.210 --> 00:12:40.080
  • Bobby: It was a parasite you caught in the Middle East,
  • 00:12:40.090 --> 00:12:42.020
  • right?
  • 00:12:42.030 --> 00:12:43.200
  • Luke: Yeah, yeah, it was a parasite.
  • 00:12:43.210 --> 00:12:45.070
  • We think I got it while I was over in Israel
  • 00:12:45.080 --> 00:12:46.240
  • in the Holy Land of all places.
  • 00:12:46.250 --> 00:12:48.040
  • I'm like, "Why, God?"
  • 00:12:48.050 --> 00:12:49.230
  • And so I contracted it there and it was a parasite, and then a
  • 00:12:49.240 --> 00:12:52.240
  • couple different infections that stemmed from the parasite.
  • 00:12:52.250 --> 00:12:56.060
  • And thank God, though, I got healed.
  • 00:12:56.070 --> 00:12:58.040
  • Bobby: But it was pretty dangerous there too.
  • 00:12:58.050 --> 00:12:59.260
  • Like your life was in danger, right?
  • 00:12:59.270 --> 00:13:01.220
  • I mean, you were really in a lot of pain?
  • 00:13:01.230 --> 00:13:03.180
  • Luke: Yeah.
  • 00:13:03.190 --> 00:13:05.060
  • Initially, I went to the doctor and I'm--you know, I'm trying
  • 00:13:05.070 --> 00:13:07.190
  • to make sure things are not worst case scenario.
  • 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:09.200
  • So I said to them, I was like, "This isn't cancer, right?"
  • 00:13:09.210 --> 00:13:12.280
  • And they were like, "Well, we don't know.
  • 00:13:12.290 --> 00:13:14.290
  • We'll find--it's kind of, you know."
  • 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:16.250
  • I was like, "What do you mean it's kind of you know.
  • 00:13:16.260 --> 00:13:18.240
  • Like, I mean, I might have cancer?"
  • 00:13:18.250 --> 00:13:20.180
  • And they were like, "Your white blood cell count is high.
  • 00:13:20.190 --> 00:13:23.090
  • You're losing a lot of weight.
  • 00:13:23.100 --> 00:13:25.010
  • We'll wait and see."
  • 00:13:25.020 --> 00:13:26.250
  • And so as a 20 something who thought the world was something
  • 00:13:26.260 --> 00:13:30.030
  • that I could just mold into what I wanted it to be, which I know
  • 00:13:30.040 --> 00:13:32.190
  • you never struggled with as a young 20 something,
  • 00:13:32.200 --> 00:13:35.190
  • but I was just like, "This is crazy.
  • 00:13:35.200 --> 00:13:39.110
  • What--like, what do I do?"
  • 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:41.190
  • And that's where God was really teaching me, "This is going
  • 00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:43.250
  • to--I'm taking you into a deeper level of trust and faith in me,
  • 00:13:43.260 --> 00:13:47.140
  • not just when everything's going okay, but when things
  • 00:13:47.150 --> 00:13:49.150
  • aren't going okay."
  • 00:13:49.160 --> 00:13:51.040
  • Bobby: So your book is really kind of about that story,
  • 00:13:51.050 --> 00:13:52.260
  • "Your Mess Matters."
  • 00:13:52.270 --> 00:13:54.180
  • And I mean, you guys--I think about all the changes
  • 00:13:54.190 --> 00:13:56.170
  • you went through.
  • 00:13:56.180 --> 00:13:58.080
  • As a young man, not only did you go through this horrible
  • 00:13:58.090 --> 00:14:01.070
  • experience, you know, life-threatening painful
  • 00:14:01.080 --> 00:14:04.000
  • disease, but you lost your-- you didn't lose your church,
  • 00:14:04.010 --> 00:14:07.050
  • but you couldn't be-- couldn't pastor anymore.
  • 00:14:07.060 --> 00:14:10.010
  • I don't know what happened to your income, but I'm sure it
  • 00:14:10.020 --> 00:14:12.120
  • couldn't be good and just, you know, struggles and just medical
  • 00:14:12.130 --> 00:14:15.140
  • bills and all the stuff.
  • 00:14:15.150 --> 00:14:17.060
  • I mean, that's an incredible amount of stress.
  • 00:14:17.070 --> 00:14:19.230
  • And I think you would say you actually grew as a person and
  • 00:14:19.240 --> 00:14:23.160
  • learned more through this mess than you did when everything was
  • 00:14:23.170 --> 00:14:26.210
  • going great in your church.
  • 00:14:26.220 --> 00:14:28.170
  • Luke: Definitely. And I think it's interesting.
  • 00:14:28.180 --> 00:14:30.190
  • You know, I'm just like in those 6 months where I just felt like,
  • 00:14:30.200 --> 00:14:33.170
  • you know, "God, what is the point of this?"
  • 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:35.240
  • I think, you know, it's easy to look back on things and see what
  • 00:14:35.250 --> 00:14:38.220
  • they were for; but I can easily look back now and say those
  • 00:14:38.230 --> 00:14:41.290
  • 6 months that felt so painful at the time, they're going to help
  • 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:44.280
  • me for the rest of my life to trust God in a deeper way and to
  • 00:14:44.290 --> 00:14:48.250
  • really recognize that your mess does matter to God.
  • 00:14:48.260 --> 00:14:51.210
  • That he's not just allowing things to happen because he
  • 00:14:51.220 --> 00:14:54.150
  • thinks it's just going to be fun to watch, but he's actually
  • 00:14:54.160 --> 00:14:57.000
  • working in the middle of the messiness of life.
  • 00:14:57.010 --> 00:14:59.280
  • And I've really grown to have compassion for other people
  • 00:14:59.290 --> 00:15:02.200
  • and the things they're going through as well as a result
  • 00:15:02.210 --> 00:15:04.220
  • of what I went through.
  • 00:15:04.230 --> 00:15:06.110
  • Bobby: Yeah, it's amazing.
  • 00:15:06.120 --> 00:15:07.240
  • I love this--the message of this book.
  • 00:15:07.250 --> 00:15:09.100
  • There's a thing in there you talk about like Japanese pottery
  • 00:15:09.110 --> 00:15:11.170
  • or something.
  • 00:15:11.180 --> 00:15:13.010
  • Tell us about that.
  • 00:15:13.020 --> 00:15:14.170
  • Luke: Yeah, so I talked about the Japanese art
  • 00:15:14.180 --> 00:15:16.000
  • of kintsugi in there.
  • 00:15:16.010 --> 00:15:17.150
  • And kintsugi is really interesting because they talk
  • 00:15:17.160 --> 00:15:20.160
  • about how after a piece of pottery breaks; rather than just
  • 00:15:20.170 --> 00:15:24.090
  • throwing it away, they get like a lacquer mixed with gold or
  • 00:15:24.100 --> 00:15:27.180
  • silver and they repair the pottery with that lacquer.
  • 00:15:27.190 --> 00:15:30.290
  • And they say through that pottery, through that repair,
  • 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:34.120
  • that it's actually more beautiful after it's been
  • 00:15:34.130 --> 00:15:36.140
  • repaired by the gold and silver lacquer than it was when
  • 00:15:36.150 --> 00:15:39.100
  • it was a whole piece of pottery previously.
  • 00:15:39.110 --> 00:15:41.170
  • And so it just reminded me a lot that
  • 00:15:41.180 --> 00:15:44.000
  • that's what Christ does for us, that in our brokenness,
  • 00:15:44.010 --> 00:15:47.030
  • in our mess, he sealed us with
  • 00:15:47.040 --> 00:15:49.020
  • his blood and through that we're able to see some just
  • 00:15:49.030 --> 00:15:51.200
  • unbelievable moves of God.
  • 00:15:51.210 --> 00:15:54.040
  • And I feel like people need to realize you're more beautiful
  • 00:15:54.050 --> 00:15:56.290
  • after you come to Christ in your brokenness than you
  • 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.090
  • were feeling whole without him.
  • 00:15:59.100 --> 00:16:01.080
  • Bobby: Amen.
  • 00:16:01.090 --> 00:16:02.250
  • It's a powerful message, Luke, and we appreciate it.
  • 00:16:02.260 --> 00:16:04.180
  • The book is called "Your Mess Matters,"
  • 00:16:04.190 --> 00:16:06.180
  • trusting the God who creates from dust and redeems by blood.
  • 00:16:06.190 --> 00:16:10.200
  • Luke Lezon, thank you so, so much for your message.
  • 00:16:10.210 --> 00:16:13.110
  • You mean the world to us, and so thankful for your ministry.
  • 00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:16.150
  • Luke: Thank you. Thank you.
  • 00:16:16.160 --> 00:16:19.110
  • Hannah: Hi, friends.
  • 00:16:21.140 --> 00:16:22.230
  • We're so happy to have you join us in worship today.
  • 00:16:22.240 --> 00:16:25.210
  • You are the beloved of God, and we love you.
  • 00:16:25.220 --> 00:16:29.110
  • Bobby: As the end of the year approaches,
  • 00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:31.010
  • and we gather with friends and family
  • 00:16:31.020 --> 00:16:32.260
  • to remember and express the gift of gratitude,
  • 00:16:32.270 --> 00:16:35.180
  • we can choose to embrace God's goodness, regardless
  • 00:16:35.190 --> 00:16:38.240
  • of challenging circumstances or difficult times.
  • 00:16:38.250 --> 00:16:42.060
  • Hannah: Psalm 107 says: "Give thanks to the Lord
  • 00:16:42.070 --> 00:16:45.140
  • for he is good.
  • 00:16:45.150 --> 00:16:47.090
  • His love endures forever."
  • 00:16:47.100 --> 00:16:50.010
  • Because of who God is, we can grow
  • 00:16:50.020 --> 00:16:52.290
  • through every season knowing that everything will work out
  • 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:57.000
  • according to his good plan and purpose.
  • 00:16:57.010 --> 00:16:59.170
  • Bobby: That's right.
  • 00:16:59.180 --> 00:17:01.000
  • As the "Hour of Power" enters its 50th year
  • 00:17:01.010 --> 00:17:03.010
  • of broadcasting the good news of Jesus,
  • 00:17:03.020 --> 00:17:05.170
  • our legacy is a testimony to his unfading faithfulness
  • 00:17:05.180 --> 00:17:09.100
  • through times of trial and triumph.
  • 00:17:09.110 --> 00:17:11.170
  • And your continued support makes it all possible.
  • 00:17:11.180 --> 00:17:14.010
  • As a thank you for your friendship,
  • 00:17:14.020 --> 00:17:15.280
  • we'd love to send you

  • for even greater growth.
  • 00:18:21.040 --> 00:18:23.220
  • Bobby: This year has been challenging for "Hour of Power,"
  • 00:18:23.230 --> 00:18:25.290
  • but because of your willingness to come alongside us,
  • 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:28.240
  • we are walking by faith into our 50th year of ministry.
  • 00:18:28.250 --> 00:18:32.130
  • Your generous financial gift will ensure that our legacy
  • 00:18:32.140 --> 00:18:35.060
  • continues to unfold for another 50 years so new generations
  • 00:18:35.070 --> 00:18:39.000
  • can know Jesus Christ as their Savior.
  • 00:18:39.010 --> 00:18:41.070
  • Thank you, and remember as always,
  • 00:18:41.080 --> 00:18:43.080
  • God loves you and so do we.
  • 00:18:43.090 --> 00:18:45.090
  • 00:18:47.040 --> 00:18:57.030
  • 00:18:57.040 --> 00:19:01.290
  • I keep fighting voices in my mind
  • 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:05.160
  • saying I'm not enough
  • 00:19:05.170 --> 00:19:10.080
  • every single lie that tells me
  • 00:19:14.180 --> 00:19:17.240
  • I will never measure up
  • 00:19:17.250 --> 00:19:23.270
  • Am I more than just the sum
  • 00:19:27.260 --> 00:19:30.140
  • of every high and every low?
  • 00:19:30.150 --> 00:19:36.250
  • Remind me once again just who I am
  • 00:19:40.070 --> 00:19:44.200
  • 'cause I need to know
  • 00:19:44.210 --> 00:19:50.020
  • You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:19:51.280 --> 00:19:58.030
  • And you say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:19:58.040 --> 00:20:04.200
  • And you say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:20:04.210 --> 00:20:11.060
  • And when I don't belong, oh you say I am yours
  • 00:20:11.070 --> 00:20:18.070
  • And I believe, oh I believe
  • 00:20:18.080 --> 00:20:24.150
  • what you say of me
  • 00:20:24.160 --> 00:20:28.050
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:20:28.060 --> 00:20:31.280
  • The only thing that matters now
  • 00:20:31.290 --> 00:20:35.060
  • is everything you think of me
  • 00:20:35.070 --> 00:20:41.270
  • In you I find my worth, in you I find my identity
  • 00:20:45.010 --> 00:20:52.290
  • And you say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:20:56.240 --> 00:21:02.270
  • And you say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:21:02.280 --> 00:21:09.200
  • And you say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:21:09.210 --> 00:21:16.020
  • And when I don't belong, oh you say I am yours
  • 00:21:16.030 --> 00:21:23.030
  • And I believe, oh I believe
  • 00:21:23.040 --> 00:21:29.110
  • what you say of me
  • 00:21:29.120 --> 00:21:32.250
  • Yes, I believe
  • 00:21:32.260 --> 00:21:37.160
  • And taking all I have
  • 00:21:40.150 --> 00:21:42.190
  • and now I'm laying it at your feet
  • 00:21:42.200 --> 00:21:49.080
  • You have every failure, God
  • 00:21:53.120 --> 00:21:56.190
  • and you have every victory
  • 00:21:56.200 --> 00:22:02.010
  • And you say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:22:04.280 --> 00:22:11.040
  • And you say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:22:11.050 --> 00:22:17.220
  • And you say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:22:17.230 --> 00:22:24.080
  • And when I don't belong, oh you say I am yours
  • 00:22:24.090 --> 00:22:31.070
  • And I believe, oh I believe
  • 00:22:31.080 --> 00:22:37.130
  • what you say of me
  • 00:22:37.140 --> 00:22:41.020
  • Yes, I believe
  • 00:22:41.030 --> 00:22:44.070
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:22:44.080 --> 00:22:47.130
  • Yes, I believe what you say of me
  • 00:22:47.140 --> 00:22:53.290
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:57.280
  • 00:22:57.290 --> 00:23:07.280
  • 00:23:07.290 --> 00:23:15.180
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:23:15.190 --> 00:23:24.030
  • Hannah: In preparation for the message, Genesis 12 and 21.
  • 00:23:24.040 --> 00:23:30.220
  • "The Lord had said to Abraham, 'Go from your country,
  • 00:23:30.230 --> 00:23:35.200
  • your people, and your father's household
  • 00:23:35.210 --> 00:23:38.100
  • to the land I will show you.
  • 00:23:38.110 --> 00:23:41.100
  • I will make you into a great nation,
  • 00:23:41.110 --> 00:23:45.010
  • and I will bless you.
  • 00:23:45.020 --> 00:23:47.240
  • I will make your name great and you will be a blessing.
  • 00:23:47.250 --> 00:23:53.040
  • I will bless those who bless you and whoever curses you I will
  • 00:23:53.050 --> 00:23:57.140
  • curse, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.'"
  • 00:23:57.150 --> 00:24:04.140
  • "Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba and there he called
  • 00:24:04.150 --> 00:24:10.030
  • on the name of the Lord, the eternal God."
  • 00:24:10.040 --> 00:24:14.290
  • Church family, may we have the eyes and hearts to use
  • 00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:19.120
  • our blessings to bless future generations, amen?
  • 00:24:19.130 --> 00:24:25.130
  • 00:24:26.230 --> 00:24:34.270
  • Worthy of every song we could ever sing
  • 00:24:34.280 --> 00:24:41.090
  • Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
  • 00:24:41.100 --> 00:24:47.270
  • Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
  • 00:24:47.280 --> 00:24:52.060
  • We live for you
  • 00:24:52.070 --> 00:24:56.130
  • Jesus, the name above every other name
  • 00:25:01.140 --> 00:25:08.040
  • Jesus, the only one who could ever save
  • 00:25:08.050 --> 00:25:14.230
  • Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
  • 00:25:14.240 --> 00:25:18.290
  • We live for you
  • 00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:21.250
  • Oh, we live for you
  • 00:25:21.260 --> 00:25:26.170
  • Holy, there is no one like you
  • 00:25:26.180 --> 00:25:31.190
  • there is none beside you
  • 00:25:31.200 --> 00:25:35.010
  • Open up my eyes in wonder
  • 00:25:35.020 --> 00:25:39.240
  • Show me who you are and fill me with your heart
  • 00:25:39.250 --> 00:25:46.100
  • and lead me in your love to those around me
  • 00:25:46.110 --> 00:25:53.270
  • Jesus, the name above every other name
  • 00:26:01.150 --> 00:26:08.010
  • Jesus, the only one who could ever save
  • 00:26:08.020 --> 00:26:14.210
  • You're worthy of every breath
  • 00:26:14.220 --> 00:26:16.290
  • we could ever breathe
  • 00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:18.280
  • We live for you
  • 00:26:18.290 --> 00:26:21.240
  • Oh, we live for you
  • 00:26:21.250 --> 00:26:26.210
  • Holy, there is no one like you
  • 00:26:26.220 --> 00:26:31.190
  • there is none beside you
  • 00:26:31.200 --> 00:26:34.250
  • Open up my eyes in wonder
  • 00:26:34.260 --> 00:26:39.240
  • Show me who you are and fill me with your heart
  • 00:26:39.250 --> 00:26:46.050
  • and lead me in your love to those around me
  • 00:26:46.060 --> 00:26:53.110
  • 00:26:53.120 --> 00:27:00.040
  • And I will build my life upon your love
  • 00:27:00.050 --> 00:27:07.090
  • It is a firm foundation
  • 00:27:07.100 --> 00:27:13.080
  • I will put my trust in you alone
  • 00:27:13.090 --> 00:27:20.230
  • and I will not be shaken
  • 00:27:20.240 --> 00:27:26.240
  • Holy, there is no one like you
  • 00:27:26.250 --> 00:27:31.290
  • there is none beside you
  • 00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:34.240
  • Open up my eyes in wonder
  • 00:27:34.250 --> 00:27:39.220
  • Show me who you are and fill me with your heart
  • 00:27:39.230 --> 00:27:46.020
  • and lead me in your love to those around me
  • 00:27:46.030 --> 00:27:54.100
  • 00:27:54.110 --> 00:28:03.130
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:28:04.210 --> 00:28:13.180
  • Bobby: Thank you for watching today.
  • 00:28:13.190 --> 00:28:15.020
  • We appreciate you so much.
  • 00:28:15.030 --> 00:28:17.030
  • If you're ever in LA or Orange County,
  • 00:28:17.040 --> 00:28:19.220
  • come on down to Shepherd's Grove.
  • 00:28:19.230 --> 00:28:21.070
  • We'd love to meet you.
  • 00:28:21.080 --> 00:28:22.170
  • We will make you feel right at home.
  • 00:28:22.180 --> 00:28:25.220
  • Friends, would you hold your hands out like this
  • 00:28:25.230 --> 00:28:27.090
  • as a way of receiving?
  • 00:28:27.100 --> 00:28:29.030
  • Let's say this creed together.
  • 00:28:29.040 --> 00:28:31.090
  • I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:28:31.100 --> 00:28:35.290
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:38.230
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:43.100
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:28:43.110 --> 00:28:47.200
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:28:47.210 --> 00:28:49.220
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world.
  • 00:28:49.230 --> 00:28:55.020
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:28:55.030 --> 00:28:56.200
  • If you have your Bibles, we're going to be reading through
  • 00:28:56.210 --> 00:28:58.240
  • extensively Numbers chapter 6.
  • 00:28:58.250 --> 00:29:02.070
  • Nothing like a number of sermon to get people excited, but
  • 00:29:02.080 --> 00:29:06.190
  • that'll be in about 15 minutes or so but just so it's ready.
  • 00:29:06.200 --> 00:29:11.020
  • Today we are finishing a series on stewardship.
  • 00:29:11.030 --> 00:29:16.060
  • Stewardship is a fancy way of saying money.
  • 00:29:16.070 --> 00:29:19.170
  • It is a time when it is scheduled for Presbyterians.
  • 00:29:19.180 --> 00:29:22.120
  • In fact, I didn't know this, but I'm glad I'm in compliance.
  • 00:29:22.130 --> 00:29:26.260
  • But yeah, in the fall, Presbyterian churches take this
  • 00:29:26.270 --> 00:29:29.160
  • time to talk about giving to charity, to the church, giving
  • 00:29:29.170 --> 00:29:33.070
  • to your neighbor, and the value of being a generous person.
  • 00:29:33.080 --> 00:29:37.050
  • And so today we're going to talk about the importance of your
  • 00:29:37.060 --> 00:29:39.110
  • legacy, of how we give to think in terms of blessing generations
  • 00:29:39.120 --> 00:29:44.090
  • whom you may never meet, and ways in which you're giving can
  • 00:29:44.100 --> 00:29:48.080
  • make a difference for the gospel that maybe you'll even meet
  • 00:29:48.090 --> 00:29:51.280
  • some people in heaven who were touched
  • 00:29:51.290 --> 00:29:54.170
  • because of some act you made.
  • 00:29:54.180 --> 00:29:57.070
  • And I've seen this as a pastor working with charities, working
  • 00:29:57.080 --> 00:30:00.150
  • with the homeless, obviously working with the church.
  • 00:30:00.160 --> 00:30:02.290
  • You get to see the ways that the generosity of people has just
  • 00:30:03.000 --> 00:30:07.180
  • like a cascading effect like a wave on the lives of others.
  • 00:30:07.190 --> 00:30:11.250
  • Very often they never even know the huge impacts that they had.
  • 00:30:11.260 --> 00:30:15.210
  • In fact, so much of raising money is about making people
  • 00:30:15.220 --> 00:30:18.200
  • aware that, "Look, your gift makes a difference
  • 00:30:18.210 --> 00:30:21.190
  • in the lives of real people.
  • 00:30:21.200 --> 00:30:23.250
  • And if it's not there, those people don't get reached."
  • 00:30:23.260 --> 00:30:26.240
  • I remember when Hannah and I wanted to plant a church.
  • 00:30:26.250 --> 00:30:29.240
  • And our little church plant of young people,
  • 00:30:29.250 --> 00:30:32.100
  • we barely had enough to do what we needed to do.
  • 00:30:32.110 --> 00:30:34.290
  • And so Hannah and I said, "All right, we need to just find
  • 00:30:35.000 --> 00:30:37.210
  • people that don't go to our church to support us."
  • 00:30:37.220 --> 00:30:40.150
  • And so we reached out and we had a list, I remember, of 88 people
  • 00:30:40.160 --> 00:30:45.010
  • who would give about $20 to $50 a month, and that was enough
  • 00:30:45.020 --> 00:30:49.040
  • for me to put food on the table for Hannah and me
  • 00:30:49.050 --> 00:30:52.190
  • and our soon to be daughter.
  • 00:30:52.200 --> 00:30:55.010
  • Hannah was pregnant at the time, and these people
  • 00:30:55.020 --> 00:30:57.220
  • just faithfully gave to us.
  • 00:30:57.230 --> 00:31:00.030
  • In fact, some of those people are still here.
  • 00:31:00.040 --> 00:31:01.270
  • The Calmayas were giving.
  • 00:31:01.280 --> 00:31:03.240
  • I think Russ and Hollie Bailey.
  • 00:31:03.250 --> 00:31:05.240
  • I don't know if they're here today, but they gave us
  • 00:31:05.250 --> 00:31:07.190
  • our very first gift.
  • 00:31:07.200 --> 00:31:09.170
  • I think it was $50.
  • 00:31:09.180 --> 00:31:11.140
  • And took that $50 down to Wells Fargo and deposited into our
  • 00:31:11.150 --> 00:31:14.000
  • little ministry account, and that was enough for us
  • 00:31:14.010 --> 00:31:15.260
  • to get some milk and bread.
  • 00:31:15.270 --> 00:31:17.290
  • And if people hadn't gotten behind this young couple who
  • 00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:20.100
  • wanted to plant a church, we probably wouldn't have
  • 00:31:20.110 --> 00:31:22.150
  • been able to stay in ministry.
  • 00:31:22.160 --> 00:31:24.110
  • I'd be doing something else.
  • 00:31:24.120 --> 00:31:26.080
  • And so those 88 people bridged the gap for me to be here
  • 00:31:26.090 --> 00:31:29.010
  • leading this church, for Hannah and I to do what we're doing.
  • 00:31:29.020 --> 00:31:32.050
  • And I think a lot of those people have no idea that if they
  • 00:31:32.060 --> 00:31:35.200
  • had not been a part of the small team that has supported us
  • 00:31:35.210 --> 00:31:38.180
  • that this wouldn't be what it is, at least in the way it is.
  • 00:31:38.190 --> 00:31:42.170
  • And I think about this time speaking of this ministry the
  • 00:31:42.180 --> 00:31:45.270
  • way it is, when I first came here as a volunteer, just
  • 00:31:45.280 --> 00:31:49.260
  • speaking, I had no control but things were not good.
  • 00:31:49.270 --> 00:31:53.150
  • And there was a season where it was--we knew that this day
  • 00:31:53.160 --> 00:31:56.150
  • would come and was like, "Okay, we're out of money.
  • 00:31:56.160 --> 00:31:58.160
  • We can't pay our bills anymore.
  • 00:31:58.170 --> 00:32:00.220
  • We have to close the door.
  • 00:32:00.230 --> 00:32:02.200
  • We need this amount of money and it's just not there.
  • 00:32:02.210 --> 00:32:04.140
  • So we have to close."
  • 00:32:04.150 --> 00:32:06.210
  • And I remember the next day, there was a lady who
  • 00:32:06.220 --> 00:32:09.020
  • had left 10% of her estates.
  • 00:32:09.030 --> 00:32:11.050
  • It was like the sale of her house as tithe.
  • 00:32:11.060 --> 00:32:13.280
  • You know, she's like, "I'm going to tithe my estate
  • 00:32:13.290 --> 00:32:16.090
  • to my church."
  • 00:32:16.100 --> 00:32:18.110
  • It came in the day we needed it, and it was just enough to pay
  • 00:32:18.120 --> 00:32:21.260
  • our bills to get us through those weeks
  • 00:32:21.270 --> 00:32:23.250
  • and that was the--probably the lowest point of the ministry.
  • 00:32:23.260 --> 00:32:26.040
  • And I think about this all the time, that this lady who passed
  • 00:32:26.050 --> 00:32:28.140
  • away has no idea that that little act of generosity and
  • 00:32:28.150 --> 00:32:34.040
  • obedience literally bridged the gap for us
  • 00:32:34.050 --> 00:32:36.160
  • to reach millions of people.
  • 00:32:36.170 --> 00:32:39.060
  • It's just amazing.
  • 00:32:39.070 --> 00:32:41.090
  • I can't wait to get to heaven and just give her a big hug
  • 00:32:41.100 --> 00:32:43.120
  • and say, "Thank you for keeping, you know, a ministry
  • 00:32:43.130 --> 00:32:46.290
  • that's been alive for 40 years.
  • 00:32:47.000 --> 00:32:49.050
  • Thanks for getting it to 50 years next year."
  • 00:32:49.060 --> 00:32:52.140
  • And it's because of people like this just--
  • 00:32:52.150 --> 00:32:55.110
  • they just have no idea.
  • 00:32:55.120 --> 00:32:57.140
  • And I have to remember in my own giving--
  • 00:32:57.150 --> 00:32:59.170
  • we need to remember in our own giving,
  • 00:32:59.180 --> 00:33:01.190
  • we just very often have no idea what God's plan
  • 00:33:01.200 --> 00:33:04.050
  • is for that generosity, but to keep in our minds that I'm
  • 00:33:04.060 --> 00:33:08.200
  • going to give in such a way that my giving will cascade like a
  • 00:33:08.210 --> 00:33:13.240
  • wave or that it will have an impact on generations to come.
  • 00:33:13.250 --> 00:33:19.230
  • We love young people here and we want to reach young people.
  • 00:33:19.240 --> 00:33:24.150
  • And we want teenagers and college students to be here, but
  • 00:33:24.160 --> 00:33:27.020
  • we don't have to have them come to our church to reach them.
  • 00:33:27.030 --> 00:33:31.110
  • You are around, presumably, young college students
  • 00:33:31.120 --> 00:33:35.170
  • and young people all the time.
  • 00:33:35.180 --> 00:33:37.290
  • Generosity and leadership and mentoring, it's one of the best
  • 00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:40.290
  • ways you can impact people.
  • 00:33:41.000 --> 00:33:44.200
  • And in fact, that's, I think, what makes--
  • 00:33:44.210 --> 00:33:47.010
  • a big part of what makes Christians Christians
  • 00:33:47.020 --> 00:33:49.000
  • is that we don't think about ourselves.
  • 00:33:49.010 --> 00:33:51.140
  • We think about who's coming after us.
  • 00:33:51.150 --> 00:33:53.160
  • In fact, that's what discipleship
  • 00:33:53.170 --> 00:33:55.240
  • in a Jewish context really is.
  • 00:33:55.250 --> 00:33:58.090
  • It's an older rabbi taking often teenage or young college
  • 00:33:58.100 --> 00:34:02.220
  • student-age--students under his wing to teach them what it means
  • 00:34:02.230 --> 00:34:08.150
  • to live and work out the Torah and to even train to be rabbi.
  • 00:34:08.160 --> 00:34:13.050
  • So discipleship, this central word--
  • 00:34:13.060 --> 00:34:16.040
  • I mean, to be a Christian means to be a disciple.
  • 00:34:16.050 --> 00:34:18.180
  • You can't separate the two.
  • 00:34:18.190 --> 00:34:20.290
  • Discipleship literally means training the next generation,
  • 00:34:21.000 --> 00:34:24.280
  • training discipline, and that gets me to this Jewish thing.
  • 00:34:24.290 --> 00:34:28.230
  • I feel like Jews are probably one of the earliest people
  • 00:34:28.240 --> 00:34:33.030
  • groups to truly, truly care for children; to call children
  • 00:34:33.040 --> 00:34:37.070
  • people, to treat them like people, to invest in them,
  • 00:34:37.080 --> 00:34:41.070
  • to think in terms of not just my children but my grandchildren
  • 00:34:41.080 --> 00:34:44.170
  • and my great grandchildren.
  • 00:34:44.180 --> 00:34:46.290
  • And not just my own personal posterity, but my nation's
  • 00:34:47.000 --> 00:34:49.170
  • posterity, my nation's children, my nation's grandchildren.
  • 00:34:49.180 --> 00:34:53.110
  • And one of the--kind of it's almost invisible in the text,
  • 00:34:53.120 --> 00:34:56.010
  • but one of my favorite is a story about Abraham planting
  • 00:34:56.020 --> 00:34:59.160
  • a tamarisk tree.
  • 00:34:59.170 --> 00:35:02.040
  • Now, before we get too much into this, the Jewish people
  • 00:35:02.050 --> 00:35:04.240
  • are a desert people.
  • 00:35:04.250 --> 00:35:07.130
  • It's funny 'cause I was looking over my notes last night
  • 00:35:07.140 --> 00:35:09.230
  • and sometimes I add an extra S.
  • 00:35:09.240 --> 00:35:12.000
  • And so I looked at Hannah, I was like, "I spelt--misspelt desert
  • 00:35:12.010 --> 00:35:15.230
  • wrong through my whole sermon.
  • 00:35:15.240 --> 00:35:17.240
  • It says dessert.
  • 00:35:17.250 --> 00:35:20.060
  • It says Israel are a dessert people."
  • 00:35:20.070 --> 00:35:23.210
  • She goes, "Those are my kind of people."
  • 00:35:23.220 --> 00:35:29.110
  • They're a desert people.
  • 00:35:29.120 --> 00:35:31.220
  • And when you are a people in a current culture that's formed
  • 00:35:31.230 --> 00:35:35.050
  • in the desert, there are a lot of things that happen to you.
  • 00:35:35.060 --> 00:35:37.130
  • You're stronger, your relationships are more
  • 00:35:37.140 --> 00:35:40.180
  • important, and most importantly because of survival,
  • 00:35:40.190 --> 00:35:44.000
  • what I believe is that almost every culture that's born
  • 00:35:44.010 --> 00:35:46.220
  • out of the desert is a hospitality culture.
  • 00:35:46.230 --> 00:35:49.190
  • You need to help each other or nobody lives in the desert.
  • 00:35:49.200 --> 00:35:54.160
  • It's interesting.
  • 00:35:54.170 --> 00:35:56.170
  • There are lots of things we don't understand about the
  • 00:35:56.180 --> 00:35:58.180
  • desert, even those of us who are from California,
  • 00:35:58.190 --> 00:36:00.230
  • mostly because we have air conditioning.
  • 00:36:00.240 --> 00:36:03.180
  • But what do you think, for example, is the number one
  • 00:36:03.190 --> 00:36:05.200
  • killer in the desert?
  • 00:36:05.210 --> 00:36:08.020
  • What do you think is?
  • 00:36:08.030 --> 00:36:10.010
  • Just shout it out.
  • 00:36:10.020 --> 00:36:12.000
  • You're going to hear water.
  • 00:36:12.010 --> 00:36:14.010
  • You're going to hear shade, food, violence.
  • 00:36:14.020 --> 00:36:16.030
  • None of those are the right answer.
  • 00:36:16.040 --> 00:36:18.060
  • If you were to get Bedouin to come up here and ask him in
  • 00:36:18.070 --> 00:36:21.060
  • Arabic what's the number one killer in the desert,
  • 00:36:21.070 --> 00:36:24.040
  • he will tell you by far, like 10 to 1, it's flooding.
  • 00:36:24.050 --> 00:36:28.070
  • Flooding.
  • 00:36:28.080 --> 00:36:30.140
  • Flooding? Yeah, flooding.
  • 00:36:30.150 --> 00:36:32.250
  • In the desert, there are these things all over called wadis
  • 00:36:32.260 --> 00:36:36.050
  • that are basically death traps.
  • 00:36:36.060 --> 00:36:38.230
  • They are dry riverbeds that very often are alluring because they
  • 00:36:38.240 --> 00:36:44.080
  • will have, you know, some shrubbery growing out of them
  • 00:36:44.090 --> 00:36:46.230
  • or you might see a puddle of water for your sheep
  • 00:36:46.240 --> 00:36:50.010
  • or your goats or even you if you're thirsty enough.
  • 00:36:50.020 --> 00:36:53.090
  • And very often the surface because of the heat will form
  • 00:36:53.100 --> 00:36:57.040
  • like a clay, but underneath there's mud and so it's easy
  • 00:36:57.050 --> 00:37:00.180
  • for your foot to go through.
  • 00:37:00.190 --> 00:37:03.040
  • Quicksand is oftentimes in wadis and so it's easy to get stuck.
  • 00:37:03.050 --> 00:37:07.120
  • So Psalms 40, for example, says,
  • 00:37:07.130 --> 00:37:10.000
  • "You pulled me out of the miry clay."
  • 00:37:10.010 --> 00:37:12.170
  • That's what he's talking about.
  • 00:37:12.180 --> 00:37:14.210
  • He's talking about these wadis that become this clay.
  • 00:37:14.220 --> 00:37:17.010
  • And what happens is even though there's almost no rain
  • 00:37:17.020 --> 00:37:19.130
  • in the desert, there will be rain hundreds of miles away
  • 00:37:19.140 --> 00:37:22.250
  • in some nearby mountain.
  • 00:37:22.260 --> 00:37:25.080
  • All of that rain, all the streams and things will
  • 00:37:25.090 --> 00:37:27.230
  • aggregate and form a flash flood.
  • 00:37:27.240 --> 00:37:30.000
  • So you can actually see YouTube videos.
  • 00:37:30.010 --> 00:37:32.030
  • This happens all the time in Utah for example.
  • 00:37:32.040 --> 00:37:33.280
  • You can actually see this phenomenon where everything is
  • 00:37:33.290 --> 00:37:35.280
  • peace and quiet and then all of a sudden like a fire hose 15 to
  • 00:37:35.290 --> 00:37:39.200
  • 20 feet high of water waves with trees and branches and all sorts
  • 00:37:39.210 --> 00:37:44.230
  • of danger rocks and stuff comes just sweeping through.
  • 00:37:44.240 --> 00:37:49.080
  • And so it's very easy if your cattle goes down to graze
  • 00:37:49.090 --> 00:37:52.040
  • on a wadi or if you get stuck, you just get nailed
  • 00:37:52.050 --> 00:37:55.070
  • and carried away because it's so alluring in a hot place.
  • 00:37:55.080 --> 00:37:59.130
  • Bet you didn't know that, did you?
  • 00:37:59.140 --> 00:38:02.010
  • That's why when Jesus says, "He who hears these words
  • 00:38:02.020 --> 00:38:04.190
  • of mine and doesn't put them into practice is like
  • 00:38:04.200 --> 00:38:07.180
  • a person who built his or her house on a wadi."
  • 00:38:07.190 --> 00:38:14.180
  • The rains came down, streams rose,
  • 00:38:14.190 --> 00:38:19.230
  • and it came down the great crash.
  • 00:38:19.240 --> 00:38:22.120
  • You just picture this gigantic wave just sweeping over
  • 00:38:22.130 --> 00:38:28.140
  • this foolish person's house, right?
  • 00:38:28.150 --> 00:38:31.110
  • Another thing that you learn in the desert
  • 00:38:31.120 --> 00:38:33.280
  • is the value of shade.
  • 00:38:33.290 --> 00:38:35.280
  • I remember when we went to Israel and we would have people
  • 00:38:35.290 --> 00:38:38.070
  • from America and they think, "Oh, it's hot outside.
  • 00:38:38.080 --> 00:38:40.150
  • I'm going to put on like a tank top and shorts and flip flops."
  • 00:38:40.160 --> 00:38:43.010
  • And they would just get burned to a crisp, you know,
  • 00:38:43.020 --> 00:38:45.200
  • even with the sunscreen and everything and the next day
  • 00:38:45.210 --> 00:38:47.270
  • you'd see them with towels over their shoulders
  • 00:38:47.280 --> 00:38:50.190
  • and with long-sleeved thin stuff because the sun is so intense.
  • 00:38:50.200 --> 00:38:55.240
  • And of course we all know that in the desert
  • 00:38:55.250 --> 00:38:58.020
  • water is a great treasure.
  • 00:38:58.030 --> 00:39:00.240
  • And that gets me to the story of Abraham planting a tree
  • 00:39:00.250 --> 00:39:03.090
  • or planting a grove probably.
  • 00:39:03.100 --> 00:39:05.250
  • Abraham, of course, is God's chosen man to begin the Jewish
  • 00:39:05.260 --> 00:39:09.260
  • people, to form a people of promise, people who will be
  • 00:39:09.270 --> 00:39:14.070
  • a blessing to the whole world.
  • 00:39:14.080 --> 00:39:16.260
  • It's hard to understand the murder, chaos, and danger
  • 00:39:16.270 --> 00:39:20.070
  • of the world into which Abraham was planted.
  • 00:39:20.080 --> 00:39:24.020
  • A world of child sacrifice, a world of war and empire,
  • 00:39:24.030 --> 00:39:28.200
  • torture, murder, sickness.
  • 00:39:28.210 --> 00:39:32.010
  • God chose a man named Abraham to have a family who would be
  • 00:39:32.020 --> 00:39:36.150
  • dedicated to creating a society that's against those things,
  • 00:39:36.160 --> 00:39:41.100
  • a society that cares for the weak, that loves the stranger,
  • 00:39:41.110 --> 00:39:44.270
  • that honors the dignity of children and women,
  • 00:39:44.280 --> 00:39:48.060
  • and this group formed--
  • 00:39:48.070 --> 00:39:51.090
  • through Torah and the Ten Commandments,
  • 00:39:51.100 --> 00:39:53.200
  • this group formed through covenant with Abraham,
  • 00:39:53.210 --> 00:39:56.240
  • and it was in this world that Abraham was promised
  • 00:39:56.250 --> 00:39:59.170
  • by God in a moment where God was reaffirming
  • 00:39:59.180 --> 00:40:02.140
  • his covenant with Abraham and said,
  • 00:40:02.150 --> 00:40:04.200
  • "Abraham, I'm going to give you this great posterity."
  • 00:40:04.210 --> 00:40:07.150
  • And Abraham says, "When? When are you going to do this?
  • 00:40:07.160 --> 00:40:12.210
  • I'm 90 years old."
  • 00:40:12.220 --> 00:40:18.080
  • God takes Abraham outside.
  • 00:40:18.090 --> 00:40:20.040
  • It's nighttime and they're standing, of course,
  • 00:40:20.050 --> 00:40:22.130
  • in the desert.
  • 00:40:22.140 --> 00:40:24.100
  • I don't know if you've ever been in the desert at night
  • 00:40:24.110 --> 00:40:26.140
  • and seeing the stars.
  • 00:40:26.150 --> 00:40:28.150
  • It's incredible.
  • 00:40:28.160 --> 00:40:30.090
  • I say that one of the best places to see the stars in the
  • 00:40:30.100 --> 00:40:33.080
  • whole world is just a few hours' drive from here, Death Valley.
  • 00:40:33.090 --> 00:40:36.290
  • Apparently the stars are incredible.
  • 00:40:37.000 --> 00:40:39.030
  • You can see the Milky Way.
  • 00:40:39.040 --> 00:40:41.060
  • God points up to the sky and says,
  • 00:40:41.070 --> 00:40:43.030
  • "Abraham, your children will outnumber all of the stars
  • 00:40:43.040 --> 00:40:45.150
  • in the sky, and you will be blessed
  • 00:40:45.160 --> 00:40:48.020
  • and they will be a blessing to the whole world."
  • 00:40:48.030 --> 00:40:51.080
  • That seems to get Abraham to calm down a little bit.
  • 00:40:51.090 --> 00:40:54.280
  • It's still 10 years after that, Abraham at the ripe age of 100
  • 00:40:54.290 --> 00:41:01.080
  • has a son, Isaac.
  • 00:41:01.090 --> 00:41:03.200
  • Isaac has just been born, and there's this conflict between
  • 00:41:03.210 --> 00:41:08.060
  • Abraham and a local king named Abimelech, a Philistine,
  • 00:41:08.070 --> 00:41:12.090
  • and they're going back and forth.
  • 00:41:12.100 --> 00:41:14.200
  • And Abimelech says to Abraham, "I can see that you
  • 00:41:14.210 --> 00:41:19.170
  • and your people--"
  • 00:41:19.180 --> 00:41:21.250
  • So even though he just has this baby, he's got money and cattle.
  • 00:41:21.260 --> 00:41:24.070
  • God's just blessed him abundantly.
  • 00:41:24.080 --> 00:41:26.140
  • He's probably has some soldiers, and it's--
  • 00:41:26.150 --> 00:41:28.130
  • so it's kind of a big group.
  • 00:41:28.140 --> 00:41:30.160
  • He says, "I can see that you are blessed."
  • 00:41:30.170 --> 00:41:33.000
  • And then he says to Abraham, "I want to make a deal with you;
  • 00:41:33.010 --> 00:41:37.120
  • that your great, great, great, great, great children and my
  • 00:41:37.130 --> 00:41:40.110
  • great, great, great, great grandchildren will treat each
  • 00:41:40.120 --> 00:41:43.070
  • other kindly, that they'll be good to one another."
  • 00:41:43.080 --> 00:41:47.170
  • And so they actually come to that agreement,
  • 00:41:47.180 --> 00:41:49.200
  • that they'll be good to one another.
  • 00:41:49.210 --> 00:41:51.260
  • And then Abraham brings something up.
  • 00:41:51.270 --> 00:41:53.160
  • He says, "All right, Abimelech, I want you to know something.
  • 00:41:53.170 --> 00:41:55.250
  • My men dug a well not far from here
  • 00:41:55.260 --> 00:41:59.260
  • and your men seized that well."
  • 00:41:59.270 --> 00:42:02.210
  • Remember a well in the desert is ultra-treasure.
  • 00:42:02.220 --> 00:42:05.290
  • It's so valuable, right?
  • 00:42:06.000 --> 00:42:08.070
  • And he says, "They seized my well."
  • 00:42:08.080 --> 00:42:09.260
  • And Abimelech says, "I don't know about that."
  • 00:42:09.270 --> 00:42:11.200
  • He says, "Well, they did."
  • 00:42:11.210 --> 00:42:13.000
  • He says, "I don't know." "They did it."
  • 00:42:13.010 --> 00:42:14.210
  • It was back and forth, you know.
  • 00:42:14.220 --> 00:42:16.180
  • Abraham says, "I'll give you seven ewe lambs
  • 00:42:16.190 --> 00:42:18.120
  • if you give me that spot of land."
  • 00:42:18.130 --> 00:42:20.230
  • They strike a deal, and that becomes the first sort of owned
  • 00:42:20.240 --> 00:42:24.200
  • property by Abraham in the new Promised Land
  • 00:42:24.210 --> 00:42:28.170
  • in a place called Beersheba.
  • 00:42:28.180 --> 00:42:31.000
  • Beersheba means seven wells after the seven ewe lambs
  • 00:42:31.010 --> 00:42:33.160
  • that were traded for it.
  • 00:42:33.170 --> 00:42:35.190
  • And he has a well, a thing of water, and it says that he
  • 00:42:35.200 --> 00:42:38.120
  • plants either a singular or-- I'd like to think a grove,
  • 00:42:38.130 --> 00:42:41.120
  • a grove of tamarisk trees.
  • 00:42:41.130 --> 00:42:44.000
  • Now because we're not desert people, most of us have
  • 00:42:44.010 --> 00:42:46.160
  • no idea what a tamarisk is.
  • 00:42:46.170 --> 00:42:49.160
  • Tamarisk is an amazing tree.
  • 00:42:49.170 --> 00:42:52.130
  • It can get about 50 feet tall.
  • 00:42:52.140 --> 00:42:55.050
  • And it has this great quality that when it's fully grown,
  • 00:42:55.060 --> 00:42:58.100
  • it gets salt on the branches.
  • 00:42:58.110 --> 00:43:00.200
  • And so in the morning, it gathers water from the air.
  • 00:43:00.210 --> 00:43:03.140
  • It soaks it up like a sponge so that in midday
  • 00:43:03.150 --> 00:43:06.150
  • it begins to drip.
  • 00:43:06.160 --> 00:43:09.040
  • So that if you stand under it in a hot day, you'll have kind
  • 00:43:09.050 --> 00:43:12.010
  • of like dripping cool water.
  • 00:43:12.020 --> 00:43:14.140
  • If you've ever been around a fountain, for example, the air
  • 00:43:14.150 --> 00:43:16.180
  • around the fountain's always like 10 degrees cooler on a hot
  • 00:43:16.190 --> 00:43:19.090
  • day because all the water soaks up the heat from the air,
  • 00:43:19.100 --> 00:43:22.140
  • and that's sort of what happens with this tree.
  • 00:43:22.150 --> 00:43:24.280
  • It soaks up the hot air so as you--not only are you under
  • 00:43:24.290 --> 00:43:27.150
  • its shade, it's almost like natural air conditioning.
  • 00:43:27.160 --> 00:43:30.260
  • There's this stuff in the branches, this white foam
  • 00:43:30.270 --> 00:43:33.140
  • that you can also eat.
  • 00:43:33.150 --> 00:43:35.080
  • It's kind of like a honey dew.
  • 00:43:35.090 --> 00:43:37.170
  • It's a sap that comes from the tamarisk.
  • 00:43:37.180 --> 00:43:39.070
  • It's nourishing. It has calories.
  • 00:43:39.080 --> 00:43:41.050
  • It's just a wonderful gift, and he planted a grove
  • 00:43:41.060 --> 00:43:43.040
  • of these trees.
  • 00:43:43.050 --> 00:43:45.050
  • And then I read the most amazing thing about the tamarisk.
  • 00:43:45.060 --> 00:43:47.240
  • It's one of the best desert trees
  • 00:43:47.250 --> 00:43:50.010
  • because the roots go very, very deep.
  • 00:43:50.020 --> 00:43:52.090
  • It can survive in very saltine climates, but because of that
  • 00:43:52.100 --> 00:43:56.110
  • it grows incredibly slow, about an inch a year.
  • 00:43:56.120 --> 00:44:00.280
  • You're talking about a 50-foot tree.
  • 00:44:00.290 --> 00:44:02.270
  • I read somewhere that--and this really struck me.
  • 00:44:02.280 --> 00:44:06.080
  • It takes 400 years for a tamarisk tree to grow
  • 00:44:06.090 --> 00:44:12.170
  • to its full height.
  • 00:44:12.180 --> 00:44:14.290
  • Abraham planted this little tamarisk tree when
  • 00:44:15.000 --> 00:44:18.010
  • he was 100 years old.
  • 00:44:18.020 --> 00:44:22.050
  • I don't know if you remember, but we talked last summer about
  • 00:44:22.060 --> 00:44:24.240
  • this Greek proverb that says, "A society becomes great
  • 00:44:24.250 --> 00:44:28.100
  • when its elders plant trees under whose shade
  • 00:44:28.110 --> 00:44:31.250
  • they know they will never sit."
  • 00:44:31.260 --> 00:44:34.140
  • Abraham is literally doing that.
  • 00:44:34.150 --> 00:44:37.230
  • He is literally planting a tree for the promise of his children,
  • 00:44:37.240 --> 00:44:43.160
  • that someday they will return to this place and they will have
  • 00:44:43.170 --> 00:44:47.180
  • a whole grove of tamarisk trees with cool air and a well
  • 00:44:47.190 --> 00:44:53.280
  • for them and their cattle to drink from.
  • 00:44:53.290 --> 00:44:57.010
  • You think about 400 years, it's almost exactly how much time it
  • 00:44:57.020 --> 00:45:00.270
  • would be between when Abraham does this and when his posterity
  • 00:45:00.280 --> 00:45:05.120
  • returns to the Promised Land from Egypt.
  • 00:45:05.130 --> 00:45:09.220
  • Isn't that amazing?
  • 00:45:09.230 --> 00:45:12.030
  • I just think about the power.
  • 00:45:12.040 --> 00:45:14.200
  • Abraham never got to meet that posterity.
  • 00:45:14.210 --> 00:45:18.010
  • He never got to meet those great, great, great, great,
  • 00:45:18.020 --> 00:45:20.110
  • great grandchildren who came, but I can tell you
  • 00:45:20.120 --> 00:45:23.050
  • they remembered him.
  • 00:45:23.060 --> 00:45:26.270
  • Gosh, were they thankful for him, weren't they?
  • 00:45:26.280 --> 00:45:29.270
  • And I think when we get to heaven, there will be this
  • 00:45:29.280 --> 00:45:32.220
  • experience where there will be a remembering,
  • 00:45:32.230 --> 00:45:35.230
  • a sort of hugging moment when we get to see those
  • 00:45:35.240 --> 00:45:39.010
  • who touched our lives or those who impacted us
  • 00:45:39.020 --> 00:45:41.270
  • whom we never got to meet.
  • 00:45:41.280 --> 00:45:44.130
  • That's why I think that desert people they think
  • 00:45:44.140 --> 00:45:47.110
  • in these terms.
  • 00:45:47.120 --> 00:45:49.070
  • They think 20, 30, 40 generations away.
  • 00:45:49.080 --> 00:45:52.180
  • They think about how can we create a society that plants
  • 00:45:52.190 --> 00:45:56.220
  • trees for the next generation?
  • 00:45:56.230 --> 00:45:58.270
  • Because when you're in a desert, you need each other.
  • 00:45:58.280 --> 00:46:01.200
  • You can't be selfish in a desert.
  • 00:46:01.210 --> 00:46:04.160
  • You're always going to be in a pickle.
  • 00:46:04.170 --> 00:46:07.060
  • And in a desert place very often if you see someone,
  • 00:46:07.070 --> 00:46:10.070
  • they're going to help you.
  • 00:46:10.080 --> 00:46:12.240
  • That's why the desert people are some of the most hospitable,
  • 00:46:12.250 --> 00:46:15.150
  • kind, welcoming people you will ever meet.
  • 00:46:15.160 --> 00:46:19.010
  • Even though they are vicious soldiers, they are really good
  • 00:46:19.020 --> 00:46:22.130
  • when it comes to welcoming a stranger or welcoming
  • 00:46:22.140 --> 00:46:25.090
  • someone who's in trouble or hospitality.
  • 00:46:25.100 --> 00:46:28.130
  • It's always been true.
  • 00:46:28.140 --> 00:46:30.090
  • I assume it always will be true.
  • 00:46:30.100 --> 00:46:32.050
  • Maybe air conditioning will change it.
  • 00:46:32.060 --> 00:46:34.000
  • I don't know.
  • 00:46:34.010 --> 00:46:35.280
  • But the Bible and the Jewish people are birthed
  • 00:46:35.290 --> 00:46:37.210
  • out of the desert.
  • 00:46:37.220 --> 00:46:39.110
  • They are desert people.
  • 00:46:39.120 --> 00:46:41.030
  • In fact--I know I already said this, but in the Bible,
  • 00:46:41.040 --> 00:46:43.080
  • Egypt is called Pharaoh's land.
  • 00:46:43.090 --> 00:46:45.180
  • Egypt is, you know, this lush, beautiful place.
  • 00:46:45.190 --> 00:46:48.180
  • The part of Israel that's green, that has all the water
  • 00:46:48.190 --> 00:46:51.170
  • and farmland, that's called Israel's land; but the desert
  • 00:46:51.180 --> 00:46:55.280
  • is called God's land.
  • 00:46:55.290 --> 00:47:00.060
  • Something about the authors of the Scripture that the desert
  • 00:47:00.070 --> 00:47:03.040
  • is although dangerous and brutal, it's also beautiful.
  • 00:47:03.050 --> 00:47:06.140
  • It does something good for the soul.
  • 00:47:06.150 --> 00:47:09.030
  • I think one of the things that really does is generosity.
  • 00:47:09.040 --> 00:47:12.020
  • I'll just finish with this last story.
  • 00:47:12.030 --> 00:47:14.130
  • Numbers chapter 6.
  • 00:47:14.140 --> 00:47:17.020
  • We're going to land the plane with Numbers, guys.
  • 00:47:17.030 --> 00:47:19.080
  • It's how we're going to do it, just getting people
  • 00:47:19.090 --> 00:47:21.130
  • excited about Mosaic Law.
  • 00:47:21.140 --> 00:47:23.150
  • Numbers chapter 6, the Nazarite vow, okay?
  • 00:47:23.160 --> 00:47:27.200
  • The Nazarites-- we'll just read it.
  • 00:47:27.210 --> 00:47:31.290
  • There's this vow for Nazarites where they can make
  • 00:47:32.000 --> 00:47:34.270
  • a commitment for God.
  • 00:47:34.280 --> 00:47:36.210
  • We don't know how long it is.
  • 00:47:36.220 --> 00:47:38.080
  • Some texts say 30 days, some texts say 30 years,
  • 00:47:38.090 --> 00:47:41.060
  • a full life, a part of a life.
  • 00:47:41.070 --> 00:47:43.050
  • It seems to be just up to the person.
  • 00:47:43.060 --> 00:47:45.280
  • When or why a man or woman would do a Nazarite vow
  • 00:47:45.290 --> 00:47:49.050
  • we don't know.
  • 00:47:49.060 --> 00:47:50.150
  • Some kind of commitment to God, but this is what it looks like.
  • 00:47:50.160 --> 00:47:53.170
  • "The Lord said to Moses, 'Speak to the Israelites and say
  • 00:47:53.180 --> 00:47:56.050
  • to them, 'If a man or a woman wants to make a special vow,
  • 00:47:56.060 --> 00:47:59.100
  • a vow of dedication to the Lord as a Nazarite,
  • 00:47:59.110 --> 00:48:02.040
  • they must abstain from wine
  • 00:48:02.050 --> 00:48:04.130
  • and other fermented drink and must not drink vinegar.'"
  • 00:48:04.140 --> 00:48:06.260
  • I don't know why you do that.
  • 00:48:06.270 --> 00:48:09.000
  • "Made from wine or other fermented drink.
  • 00:48:09.010 --> 00:48:11.180
  • They must not drink grape juice even or eat grapes or raisins
  • 00:48:11.190 --> 00:48:15.040
  • as long as they remain under the Nazarite vow.
  • 00:48:15.050 --> 00:48:17.200
  • They must not eat anything that comes from the grapevine,
  • 00:48:17.210 --> 00:48:20.120
  • not even the seeds or the skins."
  • 00:48:20.130 --> 00:48:22.220
  • Okay, so the first thing for a Nazarite, no wine.
  • 00:48:22.230 --> 00:48:27.050
  • And this is a big deal that for desert people,
  • 00:48:27.060 --> 00:48:29.120
  • there's more wine often than there is water.
  • 00:48:29.130 --> 00:48:32.260
  • Wine doesn't--you know, doesn't have dysentery in it,
  • 00:48:32.270 --> 00:48:35.190
  • it's safe.
  • 00:48:35.200 --> 00:48:37.220
  • All these celebrations-- you think about this
  • 00:48:37.230 --> 00:48:39.150
  • poor Nazarite kid.
  • 00:48:39.160 --> 00:48:41.060
  • You know, he's like-- somebody offers him wine
  • 00:48:41.070 --> 00:48:42.250
  • or like cave water.
  • 00:48:42.260 --> 00:48:44.200
  • "I will have a cave water.
  • 00:48:44.210 --> 00:48:46.130
  • Thanks," you know.
  • 00:48:46.140 --> 00:48:48.110
  • The next thing says that, "During the entire period
  • 00:48:48.120 --> 00:48:50.130
  • of the Nazarite vow, no razor may be used on their head.
  • 00:48:50.140 --> 00:48:53.000
  • They must be holy until the period of the end of their
  • 00:48:53.010 --> 00:48:55.200
  • dedication to the Lord when it is over, and they must let
  • 00:48:55.210 --> 00:48:59.070
  • their hair grow long."
  • 00:48:59.080 --> 00:49:02.000
  • So not only do the Nazarites not drink wine for this dedication,
  • 00:49:02.010 --> 00:49:05.180
  • they have to let all their hair and their beard
  • 00:49:05.190 --> 00:49:07.160
  • and everything grow long.
  • 00:49:07.170 --> 00:49:09.080
  • Sometimes it was a long vow.
  • 00:49:09.090 --> 00:49:10.280
  • They would twist their hair or do things like that.
  • 00:49:10.290 --> 00:49:13.220
  • And finally it says, "Throughout the period of their dedication
  • 00:49:13.230 --> 00:49:16.170
  • to the Lord, the Nazarite must not go near a dead body.
  • 00:49:16.180 --> 00:49:20.060
  • Even if their own father or mother or brother or sister
  • 00:49:20.070 --> 00:49:22.270
  • dies, they must not make themselves ceremonially unclean
  • 00:49:22.280 --> 00:49:26.100
  • on account of them."
  • 00:49:26.110 --> 00:49:28.090
  • Now, that seems weird, too, doesn't it?
  • 00:49:28.100 --> 00:49:30.040
  • Because in those days, you kind of live with everybody.
  • 00:49:30.050 --> 00:49:32.050
  • You live with your siblings and family.
  • 00:49:32.060 --> 00:49:34.190
  • In the ancient world, you know, as a person, you're going
  • 00:49:34.200 --> 00:49:37.080
  • to see your mother, your sisters giving birth.
  • 00:49:37.090 --> 00:49:42.040
  • You're going to see your grandparents and parents die.
  • 00:49:42.050 --> 00:49:44.250
  • You're going to be with them.
  • 00:49:44.260 --> 00:49:46.200
  • People die in the home.
  • 00:49:46.210 --> 00:49:48.090
  • There's not hospitals and morgues in the way
  • 00:49:48.100 --> 00:49:50.000
  • that we have them today.
  • 00:49:50.010 --> 00:49:51.190
  • So you're constantly around this life cycle, and death is
  • 00:49:51.200 --> 00:49:54.000
  • a normal part of a person's life.
  • 00:49:54.010 --> 00:49:57.070
  • So as--if you're a Nazarite, you have to go through this long
  • 00:49:57.080 --> 00:50:00.060
  • difficult period where you're really isolated.
  • 00:50:00.070 --> 00:50:02.210
  • You're not really partaking in parties, can't cut your hair so
  • 00:50:02.220 --> 00:50:06.180
  • you kind of look like a reggae guy or like a homeless guy.
  • 00:50:06.190 --> 00:50:11.020
  • No girl wants to kiss you.
  • 00:50:11.030 --> 00:50:16.210
  • And of course you can't touch dead bodies.
  • 00:50:16.220 --> 00:50:18.170
  • And this vow becomes this thing they do, and we know different
  • 00:50:18.180 --> 00:50:22.080
  • people who did the Nazarite vow.
  • 00:50:22.090 --> 00:50:24.030
  • Samuel did the Nazarite vow.
  • 00:50:24.040 --> 00:50:26.150
  • John the Baptist probably did.
  • 00:50:26.160 --> 00:50:28.190
  • Actually, Samson breaks all three of these things
  • 00:50:28.200 --> 00:50:31.100
  • in the Nazarite vow, which is part of his punishment.
  • 00:50:31.110 --> 00:50:33.280
  • He kills a lion with his bare hands.
  • 00:50:33.290 --> 00:50:36.070
  • That's him touching a dead body because they had
  • 00:50:36.080 --> 00:50:38.240
  • to be effectively vegetarians.
  • 00:50:38.250 --> 00:50:42.000
  • He went to drinking parties, and then of course Delilah
  • 00:50:42.010 --> 00:50:44.230
  • cuts his hair.
  • 00:50:44.240 --> 00:50:47.020
  • You're like, "Where are you going with this?
  • 00:50:47.030 --> 00:50:48.250
  • What does this have to do with anything?"
  • 00:50:48.260 --> 00:50:50.050
  • I'll tell you. Glad you asked.
  • 00:50:50.060 --> 00:50:52.060
  • At the end of the Nazarite vow, there are these things
  • 00:50:52.070 --> 00:50:56.290
  • that the person doing the vow has to come up with.
  • 00:50:57.000 --> 00:51:00.140
  • This is what it says.
  • 00:51:00.150 --> 00:51:02.100
  • "Now this is the law of the Nazarite.
  • 00:51:02.110 --> 00:51:04.010
  • When the period of their dedication is over, they're
  • 00:51:04.020 --> 00:51:05.250
  • to be brought to the entrance, to the tent of meeting.
  • 00:51:05.260 --> 00:51:09.240
  • There they are to present their offerings to the Lord."
  • 00:51:09.250 --> 00:51:12.140
  • Okay, so they have to come up with all these things to bring.
  • 00:51:12.150 --> 00:51:15.010
  • "A year-old lamb without defect for the burnt offering,
  • 00:51:15.020 --> 00:51:20.200
  • a year-old ewe lamb without defect for a sin offering,
  • 00:51:20.210 --> 00:51:24.000
  • a ram without defect for a fellowship offering together
  • 00:51:24.010 --> 00:51:27.200
  • with their grain offerings and a drink offering
  • 00:51:27.210 --> 00:51:30.070
  • and a basket of bread made with the finest flour without yeast,
  • 00:51:30.080 --> 00:51:33.200
  • thick loaves with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves
  • 00:51:33.210 --> 00:51:37.000
  • brushed with olive oil," and a partridge in a pear tree.
  • 00:51:37.010 --> 00:51:43.030
  • This list--if you are in the ancient world and you saw this
  • 00:51:44.140 --> 00:51:47.130
  • list, you would see that this is like saying you need to bring,
  • 00:51:47.140 --> 00:51:51.220
  • you know, 800 pounds of filet minon,
  • 00:51:51.230 --> 00:51:55.120
  • 19, you know-- 190 pounds of lobster,
  • 00:51:55.130 --> 00:51:59.110
  • a basket of Rolexes and your Ferrari and you can--
  • 00:51:59.120 --> 00:52:03.240
  • it's very, very expensive that almost no normal person
  • 00:52:03.250 --> 00:52:07.160
  • could come up with this sum probably in a lifetime
  • 00:52:07.170 --> 00:52:10.250
  • by themselves.
  • 00:52:10.260 --> 00:52:12.270
  • Most of the people doing the Nazarite vow--
  • 00:52:12.280 --> 00:52:14.200
  • the young men and young women who were
  • 00:52:14.210 --> 00:52:16.200
  • doing this very often prolonged their Nazarite vow
  • 00:52:16.210 --> 00:52:18.220
  • until they could get enough people in the community
  • 00:52:18.230 --> 00:52:21.180
  • to believe and participate in what they were
  • 00:52:21.190 --> 00:52:24.160
  • doing through generosity.
  • 00:52:24.170 --> 00:52:26.230
  • In other words, no Nazarite comes up with this on their own.
  • 00:52:26.240 --> 00:52:32.030
  • There is someone either a wealthy person or a group of
  • 00:52:32.040 --> 00:52:35.090
  • people or people in the village or their synagogue
  • 00:52:35.100 --> 00:52:39.120
  • that comes around them and says,
  • 00:52:39.130 --> 00:52:41.100
  • "We believe in this vow that you're doing.
  • 00:52:41.110 --> 00:52:43.090
  • We're going to come up with this expensive thing with you,
  • 00:52:43.100 --> 00:52:45.050
  • then we're going to go with you to the temple."
  • 00:52:45.060 --> 00:52:47.040
  • And then when they present this offering, the priest shaves the
  • 00:52:47.050 --> 00:52:50.220
  • person's head and they take this locks of hair that are a symbol
  • 00:52:50.230 --> 00:52:55.130
  • of the amount of time and sacrifice that they've put in
  • 00:52:55.140 --> 00:52:58.050
  • to dedicate themselves to God and it's burned on the altar,
  • 00:52:58.060 --> 00:53:02.140
  • and it smells amazing.
  • 00:53:02.150 --> 00:53:07.020
  • But in real life when we think of burnt hair,
  • 00:53:07.030 --> 00:53:09.100
  • that's a gross smell.
  • 00:53:09.110 --> 00:53:11.050
  • But for them, it was like there is a young person that is doing
  • 00:53:11.060 --> 00:53:13.190
  • this Nazarite vow, but the only way he can do it is if an older
  • 00:53:13.200 --> 00:53:17.240
  • community of people who have means are able to support him
  • 00:53:17.250 --> 00:53:21.110
  • in this act of sacrifice.
  • 00:53:21.120 --> 00:53:24.190
  • And this leads me to Acts chapter 21.
  • 00:53:24.200 --> 00:53:27.130
  • Paul, an orthodox rabbi, coming to Jerusalem.
  • 00:53:27.140 --> 00:53:31.200
  • It's been said that he's anti-Jewish and that--
  • 00:53:31.210 --> 00:53:33.290
  • and he just says, "I studied under Gamaliel.
  • 00:53:34.000 --> 00:53:36.060
  • I'm a rabbi.
  • 00:53:36.070 --> 00:53:37.280
  • I know the law, I've lived the law, and I obey the law."
  • 00:53:37.290 --> 00:53:40.270
  • And then what he does is this amazing thing.
  • 00:53:40.280 --> 00:53:43.110
  • He finds four young men who have been doing the Nazarite vow
  • 00:53:43.120 --> 00:53:48.170
  • maybe for years and they can't come up with the money
  • 00:53:48.180 --> 00:53:52.040
  • for the offering.
  • 00:53:52.050 --> 00:53:54.100
  • So he gathers the church together,
  • 00:53:54.110 --> 00:53:56.100
  • and they pool all their resources together.
  • 00:53:56.110 --> 00:53:58.220
  • Then Paul himself goes to through the Nazarite vow with
  • 00:53:58.230 --> 00:54:01.150
  • these boys for several days, goes with them to the temple,
  • 00:54:01.160 --> 00:54:04.220
  • they all have their heads shaved, and they provide the
  • 00:54:04.230 --> 00:54:07.200
  • money that they need for them to finish the offering
  • 00:54:07.210 --> 00:54:10.080
  • and then they celebrate together.
  • 00:54:10.090 --> 00:54:12.210
  • Isn't that wonderful?
  • 00:54:12.220 --> 00:54:14.200
  • And when I think about this story, I think about the way
  • 00:54:14.210 --> 00:54:17.090
  • to be able to have the eyes to see the need.
  • 00:54:17.100 --> 00:54:24.010
  • You wonder what those four boys what they felt when Paul did
  • 00:54:24.020 --> 00:54:29.170
  • that with them and provided what they needed, the profound
  • 00:54:29.180 --> 00:54:33.090
  • impact, the message it said to a city with, you know,
  • 00:54:33.100 --> 00:54:37.050
  • half a million Jews in it
  • 00:54:37.060 --> 00:54:39.070
  • and the heart of Judaism when the church says,
  • 00:54:39.080 --> 00:54:41.220
  • "We are going to give to these boys and make sure they can
  • 00:54:41.230 --> 00:54:44.170
  • fulfill this amazing vow to God.
  • 00:54:44.180 --> 00:54:46.260
  • We are on their side and we're on your side."
  • 00:54:46.270 --> 00:54:49.240
  • And it's in this way that giving is such a blessing
  • 00:54:49.250 --> 00:54:53.120
  • to the next generation.
  • 00:54:53.130 --> 00:54:56.250
  • So I want to encourage you today that in your giving that, one,
  • 00:54:56.260 --> 00:55:00.050
  • you would have eyes to see and to understand that you
  • 00:55:00.060 --> 00:55:03.020
  • may not always see the impact of a gift.
  • 00:55:03.030 --> 00:55:07.060
  • But when you give to a church, when you give to charities, when
  • 00:55:07.070 --> 00:55:11.040
  • you give to things you care about, when you support college
  • 00:55:11.050 --> 00:55:13.260
  • students or young people who are trying to--when you get behind
  • 00:55:13.270 --> 00:55:17.040
  • people in that way, you make such, such a big impact
  • 00:55:17.050 --> 00:55:21.130
  • and it means so, so much.
  • 00:55:21.140 --> 00:55:24.030
  • And so, Lord, we come to you and we ask in Jesus's name
  • 00:55:24.040 --> 00:55:26.290
  • that you would give us eyes to see.
  • 00:55:27.000 --> 00:55:29.040
  • As we finish this series on giving, we pray, Lord,
  • 00:55:29.050 --> 00:55:32.190
  • most of all that we would have wisdom and eyes to see
  • 00:55:32.200 --> 00:55:35.020
  • and a willingness to be generous.
  • 00:55:35.030 --> 00:55:37.090
  • Some of us are saying, "I have nothing to give."
  • 00:55:37.100 --> 00:55:39.120
  • Lord, I believe we all have ways that we can give: our time,
  • 00:55:39.130 --> 00:55:41.210
  • our wisdom, our work.
  • 00:55:41.220 --> 00:55:44.080
  • Lord, we just pray, God, you would help us to learn that our
  • 00:55:44.090 --> 00:55:47.170
  • giving is a way of saying, "God, we love you and, God,
  • 00:55:47.180 --> 00:55:51.000
  • we believe in this next generation."
  • 00:55:51.010 --> 00:55:53.060
  • And so, Father, I pray for that in Jesus's name.
  • 00:55:53.070 --> 00:55:55.040
  • We love you, and it's his name we pray, amen?
  • 00:55:55.050 --> 00:55:58.250
  • 00:55:58.260 --> 00:56:05.110
  • Hallelujah. Hallelujah
  • 00:56:05.120 --> 00:56:09.130
  • Hallelujah. Hallelujah
  • 00:56:09.160 --> 00:56:11.210
  • Hallelujah
  • 00:56:11.220 --> 00:56:14.200
  • King of kings and Lord of lords
  • 00:56:14.210 --> 00:56:19.020
  • King of kings and Lord of lords
  • 00:56:19.050 --> 00:56:23.110
  • and he shall reign forever and ever
  • 00:56:23.120 --> 00:56:30.120
  • Forever and ever
  • 00:56:30.130 --> 00:56:33.000
  • Forever and ever
  • 00:56:33.030 --> 00:56:35.000
  • Hallelujah. Hallelujah
  • 00:56:35.010 --> 00:56:37.070
  • Hallelujah. Hallelujah
  • 00:56:37.100 --> 00:56:40.240
  • Hallelujah
  • 00:56:40.250 --> 00:56:50.250
  • Bobby: And now the Lord bless you and keep you.
  • 00:56:52.210 --> 00:56:55.070
  • The Lord make his face to shine upon you
  • 00:56:55.080 --> 00:56:57.190
  • and be gracious unto you.
  • 00:56:57.200 --> 00:56:59.210
  • The Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you
  • 00:56:59.220 --> 00:57:02.290
  • his peace in the name of the Father and of the Son
  • 00:57:03.000 --> 00:57:05.150
  • and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
