  • 00:05:17.030 --> 00:05:25.020
  • Hannah: You may be seated.
  • 00:07:33.140 --> 00:07:35.250
  • In preparation for the message, Daniel 10.
  • 00:07:35.260 --> 00:07:40.080
  • "On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing
  • 00:07:40.090 --> 00:07:44.160
  • on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, I looked up and
  • 00:07:44.170 --> 00:07:49.160
  • there before me was a man dressed in linen,
  • 00:07:49.170 --> 00:07:53.100
  • with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist.
  • 00:07:53.110 --> 00:07:58.210
  • His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes
  • 00:07:58.220 --> 00:08:05.200
  • like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of
  • 00:08:05.210 --> 00:08:11.070
  • burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude.
  • 00:08:11.080 --> 00:08:18.110
  • Then he continued, 'Do not be afraid, Daniel.
  • 00:08:18.120 --> 00:08:24.090
  • Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding
  • 00:08:24.100 --> 00:08:29.210
  • and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard,
  • 00:08:29.220 --> 00:08:35.240
  • and I have come in response to them.
  • 00:08:35.250 --> 00:08:39.080
  • But the prince of the Persian kingdom
  • 00:08:39.090 --> 00:08:41.260
  • resisted me twenty-one days.
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:46.010
  • Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me,
  • 00:08:46.020 --> 00:08:50.280
  • because I was detained there with the king of Persia.
  • 00:08:50.290 --> 00:08:55.150
  • Now I have come to explain to you what will happen
  • 00:08:55.160 --> 00:08:58.060
  • to you and your people in the future,
  • 00:08:58.070 --> 00:09:01.090
  • for the vision concerns a time yet to come."
  • 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:06.170
  • Church family, God is working in your life,
  • 00:09:06.180 --> 00:09:10.090
  • even if you don't understand the timing, amen.
  • 00:09:10.100 --> 00:09:15.060
  • 00:09:16.090 --> 00:09:26.080
  • 00:09:26.090 --> 00:09:31.290
  • I love the Lord
  • 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:39.290
  • He heard my cry
  • 00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:47.170
  • And pitied every groan
  • 00:09:50.270 --> 00:10:00.270
  • So long as I live
  • 00:10:05.040 --> 00:10:13.020
  • And troubles rise
  • 00:10:14.210 --> 00:10:23.170
  • I hasten to, to, to his throne
  • 00:10:24.090 --> 00:10:34.090
  • Oh, I love the Lord
  • 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:51.050
  • I love the Savior because He heard
  • 00:10:52.130 --> 00:11:00.040
  • he heard my cry
  • 00:11:00.070 --> 00:11:07.150
  • And pitied every groan
  • 00:11:07.180 --> 00:11:17.170
  • Every groan
  • 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:22.160
  • Long as I live
  • 00:11:22.190 --> 00:11:31.160
  • And troubles rise
  • 00:11:31.190 --> 00:11:41.130
  • I hasten to, to, to, to
  • 00:11:41.160 --> 00:11:51.150
  • to his throne
  • 00:11:53.050 --> 00:11:58.260
  • I'll hasten
  • 00:11:58.290 --> 00:12:02.220
  • I'm just gonna hold on, hold on
  • 00:12:02.250 --> 00:12:08.220
  • I'll hasten to his throne
  • 00:12:08.250 --> 00:12:16.100
  • I'll hasten to his throne
  • 00:12:18.020 --> 00:12:26.070
  • I'll hasten to his throne
  • 00:12:27.170 --> 00:12:35.290

  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:13:19.200 --> 00:13:28.200
  • Hannah: Bobby and I are so happy
  • 00:13:29.210 --> 00:13:31.190

  • 00:13:33.180 --> 00:13:35.160
  • and inspiration from this program.
  • 00:13:35.170 --> 00:13:37.110
  • Bobby: There's an old saying that goes,
  • 00:13:37.120 --> 00:13:39.000
  • "The only thing to expect is the unexpected."
  • 00:13:39.010 --> 00:13:41.220
  • I always think this is how Mary felt when the Angel Gabriel
  • 00:13:41.230 --> 00:13:44.040
  • appeared and told her she was gonna give birth
  • 00:13:44.050 --> 00:13:46.080
  • to the Son of God.
  • 00:13:46.090 --> 00:13:47.290
  • Although it was really good news,
  • 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:49.180
  • her future took a very different turn.
  • 00:13:49.190 --> 00:13:51.100
  • Hannah: When the direction of your life suddenly changes,
  • 00:13:51.110 --> 00:13:54.200
  • you can count on the fact that you are not alone.
  • 00:13:54.210 --> 00:13:58.190
  • Jesus is with you, and he always finishes
  • 00:13:58.200 --> 00:14:01.200
  • the good work he starts.
  • 00:14:01.210 --> 00:14:03.250
  • No matter how difficult your situation
  • 00:14:03.260 --> 00:14:06.120
  • or how drastically your course shifts,
  • 00:14:06.130 --> 00:14:09.010
  • he is with you.
  • 00:14:09.020 --> 00:14:11.060
  • Bobby: You are his beloved child,
  • 00:14:11.070 --> 00:14:13.050
  • and he has the best in store for your life.
  • 00:14:13.060 --> 00:14:15.220
  • Today as a reminder of the really good news
  • 00:14:15.230 --> 00:14:18.020
  • that Jesus is with you, we'd love to send you
  • 00:14:18.030 --> 00:14:20.220

  • friends and partners.
  • 00:14:32.150 --> 00:14:34.150
  • Just look at this beautiful
  • 00:14:34.160 --> 00:14:36.070
  • and intricately-crafted angel ornament.
  • 00:14:36.080 --> 00:14:38.170
  • When you hang it on your tree or place it in your home,

  • 00:20:38.110 --> 00:20:40.200
  • As ready as I can be
  • 00:20:40.210 --> 00:20:42.200
  • Are you ready for a miracle?

  • 00:25:39.070 --> 00:25:43.010
  • what you're about to hear.
  • 00:25:43.020 --> 00:25:45.000
  • And so, we want to invite you if you're ever in Orange County
  • 00:25:45.010 --> 00:25:47.290
  • or L.A., come down to Shepherd's Grove Presbyterian,
  • 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:51.060
  • worship with us.
  • 00:25:51.070 --> 00:25:52.290
  • We would love to meet you, give you a big hug.
  • 00:25:53.000 --> 00:25:54.170
  • We'll make you feel right at home.
  • 00:25:54.180 --> 00:25:56.220
  • Friends, will you hold your hands out like this is
  • 00:25:56.230 --> 00:25:58.130
  • a way of receiving?
  • 00:25:58.140 --> 00:26:00.090
  • Let's say this creed together.
  • 00:26:00.100 --> 00:26:02.060
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:26:02.070 --> 00:26:06.070
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:26:06.080 --> 00:26:09.090
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:26:09.100 --> 00:26:14.030
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:26:14.040 --> 00:26:18.130
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:26:18.140 --> 00:26:20.210
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:26:20.220 --> 00:26:26.000
  • Thanks, you can be seated.
  • 00:26:26.010 --> 00:26:29.250
  • It was interesting when Russ was talking about waiting for
  • 00:26:29.260 --> 00:26:33.180
  • a medical report, it immediately made me think of a time when
  • 00:26:33.190 --> 00:26:37.030
  • I had been having some blurred vision
  • 00:26:37.040 --> 00:26:39.240
  • and some other strange side effects.
  • 00:26:39.250 --> 00:26:42.220
  • And so, I went to see a doctor, Hannah made me.
  • 00:26:42.230 --> 00:26:45.150
  • Just kidding.
  • 00:26:45.160 --> 00:26:47.180
  • You know, men who are married live longer
  • 00:26:47.190 --> 00:26:49.120
  • because their wives make them go to the doctor.
  • 00:26:49.130 --> 00:26:51.130
  • Anyway, so I went to the doctor, and he put a flash in my eye,
  • 00:26:51.140 --> 00:26:56.180
  • and kind of looked, did a couple things.
  • 00:26:56.190 --> 00:26:58.220
  • He says, "You know, you might have a brain tumor.
  • 00:26:58.230 --> 00:27:00.200
  • I'm gonna have you get an EEG."
  • 00:27:00.210 --> 00:27:02.110
  • What?
  • 00:27:02.120 --> 00:27:04.150
  • So, or CAT scan.
  • 00:27:04.160 --> 00:27:06.140
  • So, I went and got a CAT scan, it cost me $200.
  • 00:27:06.150 --> 00:27:08.270
  • And I was like, when do I find out if I have a brain tumor?
  • 00:27:08.280 --> 00:27:11.000
  • They're like, "Oh, it should be no more than three
  • 00:27:11.010 --> 00:27:12.250
  • or four weeks.
  • 00:27:12.260 --> 00:27:14.200
  • We'll, let you know as soon as we get the data."
  • 00:27:14.210 --> 00:27:16.110
  • Three or four weeks?
  • 00:27:16.120 --> 00:27:18.050
  • And so, I remember waiting three weeks to be like,
  • 00:27:18.060 --> 00:27:21.020
  • do I have a brain tumor?
  • 00:27:21.030 --> 00:27:23.160
  • I was like thinking about who's gonna watch my kids,
  • 00:27:23.170 --> 00:27:26.140
  • you know, if I'm dead.
  • 00:27:26.150 --> 00:27:28.120
  • Anyway, I was fine, nothing, no brain tumor.
  • 00:27:28.130 --> 00:27:31.140
  • But that's a weird-- nothing happened.
  • 00:27:31.150 --> 00:27:33.250
  • I was fine.
  • 00:27:33.260 --> 00:27:35.270
  • Apparently, I need to drink more water.
  • 00:27:35.280 --> 00:27:38.230
  • Anyway, so but I remember that feeling of kind of that
  • 00:27:38.240 --> 00:27:44.000
  • in between, that feeling of waiting.
  • 00:27:44.010 --> 00:27:47.200
  • You know, is God gonna come through for me?
  • 00:27:47.210 --> 00:27:49.230
  • You know, is this medical thing gonna be bad?
  • 00:27:49.240 --> 00:27:51.260
  • And I want to talk about how, especially in our dreaming,
  • 00:27:51.270 --> 00:27:55.160
  • in our goal setting, in our work, in our families,
  • 00:27:55.170 --> 00:28:00.050
  • our relationships, it can be very hard sometimes when we feel
  • 00:28:00.060 --> 00:28:04.090
  • like it's just taking forever for our dreams to come through,
  • 00:28:04.100 --> 00:28:08.240
  • our work or vision to come through.
  • 00:28:08.250 --> 00:28:11.130
  • And I want to say two things today, God's delays are not
  • 00:28:11.140 --> 00:28:13.280
  • God's denials, and God's decrease is not God's demotion.
  • 00:28:13.290 --> 00:28:17.230
  • First, on this first one, very many of us when we're saying
  • 00:28:17.240 --> 00:28:20.080
  • like, "Why is this happening?"
  • 00:28:20.090 --> 00:28:22.040
  • I want to quote two family members, the first is of course,
  • 00:28:22.050 --> 00:28:25.040
  • my dear old Grampa Schuller.
  • 00:28:25.050 --> 00:28:27.060
  • It was one of his famous quotes, he said,
  • 00:28:27.070 --> 00:28:29.140
  • "God's delays are not God's denials."
  • 00:28:29.150 --> 00:28:34.260
  • I have a crusade, by the way.
  • 00:28:34.270 --> 00:28:36.290
  • This quote is very often plagiarized by other pastors,
  • 00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:40.240
  • so I'm on a crusade.
  • 00:28:40.250 --> 00:28:43.230
  • Anyway, so he said God's delays are not God's denials.
  • 00:28:43.240 --> 00:28:47.090
  • And there's a lot of wisdom we can learn from that and many of
  • 00:28:47.100 --> 00:28:49.190
  • the other things he said, but that was really helpful for me
  • 00:28:49.200 --> 00:28:52.120
  • in times in life when I'm in that in between period.
  • 00:28:52.130 --> 00:28:55.080
  • Maybe some of you are there right now,
  • 00:28:55.090 --> 00:28:57.110
  • you feel caught in the in between.
  • 00:28:57.120 --> 00:28:59.140
  • You just like, "How long, Lord, is this gonna wait?"
  • 00:28:59.150 --> 00:29:01.230
  • And then there's another person in my family, Haven.
  • 00:29:01.240 --> 00:29:04.200
  • I remember when a long time ago, not a long time ago, last year,
  • 00:29:04.210 --> 00:29:09.100
  • Haven was feeling discouraged in school.
  • 00:29:09.110 --> 00:29:12.010
  • When she first started school, she loved it but--and I always
  • 00:29:12.020 --> 00:29:15.120
  • drive her to school in the morning, and we started doing
  • 00:29:15.130 --> 00:29:18.010
  • this thing where we would cheer each other on,
  • 00:29:18.020 --> 00:29:20.020
  • encourage each other with these sayings.
  • 00:29:20.030 --> 00:29:22.060
  • And we had this list of things,
  • 00:29:22.070 --> 00:29:24.110
  • and it just sort of grew over time.
  • 00:29:24.120 --> 00:29:26.040
  • So, I would go, "We're gonna be," and she'd go, "positive."
  • 00:29:26.050 --> 00:29:29.030
  • You know that kind of thing.
  • 00:29:29.040 --> 00:29:30.250
  • And I go, "Cause knowledge is power,
  • 00:29:30.260 --> 00:29:32.260
  • 'cause leaders are readers.
  • 00:29:32.270 --> 00:29:35.160
  • If you can dream it, you can do it."
  • 00:29:35.170 --> 00:29:37.220
  • That's Walt Disney, by the way, not Dr. Schuller.
  • 00:29:37.230 --> 00:29:40.240
  • And then we'd go, "Honor Jesus with your life."
  • 00:29:40.250 --> 00:29:46.020
  • We get all excited.
  • 00:29:46.030 --> 00:29:48.030
  • But the last one we always said, and this is one she invented,
  • 00:29:48.040 --> 00:29:50.170
  • I thought it was great.
  • 00:29:50.180 --> 00:29:52.170
  • She says, "If it's great, it's worth the wait."
  • 00:29:52.180 --> 00:29:56.270
  • Classic Schullerism, there it is,
  • 00:29:56.280 --> 00:30:00.010
  • another Schuller with a pithy line.
  • 00:30:00.020 --> 00:30:03.040
  • God's delays are not God's denials.
  • 00:30:03.050 --> 00:30:05.090
  • If it's great, it's worth the wait.
  • 00:30:05.100 --> 00:30:07.160
  • Patience is a godly thing.
  • 00:30:07.170 --> 00:30:09.210
  • It's good to remember that God is not a microwave.
  • 00:30:09.220 --> 00:30:15.160
  • He's not an over-the-counter fast food type of God.
  • 00:30:15.170 --> 00:30:19.150
  • We serve a God who does things slowly, and he does things well,
  • 00:30:19.160 --> 00:30:24.050
  • and he does things in his timing.
  • 00:30:24.060 --> 00:30:26.120
  • And when we feel frustrated, I want you to know
  • 00:30:26.130 --> 00:30:28.240
  • that we never know why a lot of these things happen,
  • 00:30:28.250 --> 00:30:32.010
  • but we can trust that ultimately,
  • 00:30:32.020 --> 00:30:34.110
  • God will get through to us.
  • 00:30:34.120 --> 00:30:36.190
  • We'll look at two stories today that show these principles that
  • 00:30:36.200 --> 00:30:39.210
  • his decrease isn't always bad, and his delay is not always bad.
  • 00:30:39.220 --> 00:30:44.050
  • One of my favorite stories is in the Book of Daniel,
  • 00:30:44.060 --> 00:30:46.180
  • Daniel chapter 10.
  • 00:30:46.190 --> 00:30:48.250
  • I've cited it before but Daniel's an interesting story
  • 00:30:48.260 --> 00:30:51.040
  • because he begins as a young man being carted off from his
  • 00:30:51.050 --> 00:30:54.250
  • hometown in Israel to Babylon where he ends up in the service
  • 00:30:54.260 --> 00:30:59.130
  • of the Babylonian king and over his life becomes more
  • 00:30:59.140 --> 00:31:03.080
  • and more promoted.
  • 00:31:03.090 --> 00:31:05.130
  • If you study the history of Babylon, it's really fascinating
  • 00:31:05.140 --> 00:31:08.250
  • civilization because they had these group of,
  • 00:31:08.260 --> 00:31:11.200
  • this group of-- they're like wizards,
  • 00:31:11.210 --> 00:31:13.230
  • and soothsayers who, on the one hand,
  • 00:31:13.240 --> 00:31:16.030
  • they were real scientists who did actual chemistry.
  • 00:31:16.040 --> 00:31:19.160
  • They did real observable science.
  • 00:31:19.170 --> 00:31:22.000
  • They did engineering, but on the other hand,
  • 00:31:22.010 --> 00:31:24.070
  • they were like pagan sorcerers.
  • 00:31:24.080 --> 00:31:26.170
  • They did magic, and bone readings, and things like that.
  • 00:31:26.180 --> 00:31:31.010
  • And so, there was this kind of an odd group.
  • 00:31:31.020 --> 00:31:34.010
  • And Daniel, as he becomes wiser and wiser doing God's work,
  • 00:31:34.020 --> 00:31:38.100
  • is put in place as an Orthodox godly Jew.
  • 00:31:38.110 --> 00:31:43.240
  • He is put in place over these wizards and sort of leads them.
  • 00:31:43.250 --> 00:31:48.090
  • And so, it really makes the Book of Daniel a fun book to read.
  • 00:31:48.100 --> 00:31:52.170
  • If you're wondering who Daniel is, he's the guy from Daniel in
  • 00:31:52.180 --> 00:31:54.270
  • the lion's den, and his friends are the one from Shadrach,
  • 00:31:54.280 --> 00:31:57.270
  • Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, and his story is
  • 00:31:57.280 --> 00:32:00.290
  • just one that's full of visions, and miracles, and God's power.
  • 00:32:01.000 --> 00:32:07.260
  • Well, eventually, after Babylon is actually conquered by Persia,
  • 00:32:07.270 --> 00:32:13.010
  • poor Daniel's lived through two wars, brutal wars.
  • 00:32:13.020 --> 00:32:17.020
  • Friends have died, homes have been destroyed,
  • 00:32:17.030 --> 00:32:21.120
  • and now he's an old, old man.
  • 00:32:21.130 --> 00:32:23.150
  • He's honored. He's revered.
  • 00:32:23.160 --> 00:32:25.260
  • He's probably wealthy.
  • 00:32:25.270 --> 00:32:27.250
  • He probably has an entourage with him.
  • 00:32:27.260 --> 00:32:30.210
  • And as an old man, he has this vision of the worst war.
  • 00:32:30.220 --> 00:32:34.270
  • It's like a third war, and he doesn't know what this means.
  • 00:32:34.280 --> 00:32:39.060
  • And it terrifies him.
  • 00:32:39.070 --> 00:32:41.150
  • And he cries out to God as he always has,
  • 00:32:41.160 --> 00:32:44.210
  • only this time he hears no answer.
  • 00:32:44.220 --> 00:32:48.120
  • "God, what does this mean?"
  • 00:32:48.130 --> 00:32:50.240
  • No answer, nothing.
  • 00:32:50.250 --> 00:32:54.060
  • And because he doesn't understand what this war is,
  • 00:32:54.070 --> 00:32:56.270
  • and when it's gonna come, and why he was shown to see the war,
  • 00:32:56.280 --> 00:33:00.150
  • he cries out, "God, reveal to me what this is."
  • 00:33:00.160 --> 00:33:03.000
  • Still nothing.
  • 00:33:03.010 --> 00:33:05.000
  • So Daniel, in almost a very Jewish impassioned protest just
  • 00:33:05.010 --> 00:33:10.210
  • begins to fast and mourn, and he covers himself in sackcloth.
  • 00:33:10.220 --> 00:33:15.280
  • And he chooses not to bathe.
  • 00:33:15.290 --> 00:33:18.200
  • That's a way to protest, huh?
  • 00:33:18.210 --> 00:33:20.280
  • Decides not to use any lotions.
  • 00:33:20.290 --> 00:33:23.030
  • And just for 24 days, he goes with no food, just water,
  • 00:33:23.040 --> 00:33:28.230
  • and every day just feeling frustrated, why?
  • 00:33:28.240 --> 00:33:33.030
  • "All this time God has always come through for me,
  • 00:33:33.040 --> 00:33:35.190
  • and now he's not.
  • 00:33:35.200 --> 00:33:37.090
  • Where is God? God, where are you?"
  • 00:33:37.100 --> 00:33:39.110
  • Still nothing.
  • 00:33:39.120 --> 00:33:41.130
  • Finally one day on the 24th day of his fast, he's standing down
  • 00:33:41.140 --> 00:33:46.010
  • by the water with his group of men, servants probably,
  • 00:33:46.020 --> 00:33:51.180
  • and probably students.
  • 00:33:51.190 --> 00:33:54.010
  • And for whatever reason, they're down by the water,
  • 00:33:54.020 --> 00:33:56.170
  • and all of a sudden, an angel appears before Daniel, and
  • 00:33:56.180 --> 00:34:01.190
  • it says his voice sounds like a multitude.
  • 00:34:01.200 --> 00:34:05.050
  • So, imagine a sea of people all speaking at the same time.
  • 00:34:05.060 --> 00:34:09.130
  • That's what the angel's voice sounds like.
  • 00:34:09.140 --> 00:34:11.250
  • And his eyes are full of fire.
  • 00:34:11.260 --> 00:34:14.110
  • And he goes, "Daniel," I guess, you know, looking at Daniel.
  • 00:34:14.120 --> 00:34:19.250
  • And the men with Daniel can't see the angel, but they are
  • 00:34:19.260 --> 00:34:24.100
  • completely overcome with fear and dread.
  • 00:34:24.110 --> 00:34:27.030
  • Some of them fall to the ground in a fetal position,
  • 00:34:27.040 --> 00:34:30.030
  • others flee and run away.
  • 00:34:30.040 --> 00:34:32.240
  • And Daniel, looking at the angel as an old man who hasn't eaten
  • 00:34:32.250 --> 00:34:38.080
  • in 24 days, passes out, just falls on the ground.
  • 00:34:38.090 --> 00:34:43.210
  • And the angel comes and wakes him up says,
  • 00:34:43.220 --> 00:34:46.030
  • "Stand up," you know?
  • 00:34:46.040 --> 00:34:48.050
  • Can see that Daniel's exhausted.
  • 00:34:48.060 --> 00:34:50.100
  • And he almost addresses this hunger thing.
  • 00:34:50.110 --> 00:34:52.040
  • He says, "I know you've been praying to the Lord.
  • 00:34:52.050 --> 00:34:54.140
  • I know you've been fasting.
  • 00:34:54.150 --> 00:34:56.250
  • I know you've been waiting.
  • 00:34:56.260 --> 00:34:58.260
  • I know you're frustrated, but the Lord, on the first day you
  • 00:34:58.270 --> 00:35:03.230
  • prayed to me, sent me to you, except that the Prince of
  • 00:35:03.240 --> 00:35:08.180
  • Persia," which is probably a reference to an arch demon or
  • 00:35:08.190 --> 00:35:12.120
  • something, "stopped me, and the angel and I began to fight.
  • 00:35:12.130 --> 00:35:18.030
  • I was struggling to get through so I could come to you
  • 00:35:18.040 --> 00:35:20.270
  • to relay God's message.
  • 00:35:20.280 --> 00:35:23.020
  • And I wasn't even able to break through until the Angel Michael
  • 00:35:23.030 --> 00:35:27.010
  • came and assisted me, and I've just gotten through
  • 00:35:27.020 --> 00:35:30.210
  • to give you this message."
  • 00:35:30.220 --> 00:35:33.050
  • And he tells him effectively that the vision he had was
  • 00:35:33.060 --> 00:35:36.200
  • actually a prophecy of Greece, Alexander the Great is coming.
  • 00:35:36.210 --> 00:35:40.260
  • That's a different thing altogether.
  • 00:35:40.270 --> 00:35:43.040
  • The main thing we learned is that the spiritual world
  • 00:35:43.050 --> 00:35:46.240
  • is just bizarre.
  • 00:35:46.250 --> 00:35:49.010
  • This is just weird.
  • 00:35:49.020 --> 00:35:51.020
  • I mean, as a reformed guy reading this, you know,
  • 00:35:51.030 --> 00:35:54.040
  • we are the frozen chosen.
  • 00:35:54.050 --> 00:35:56.210
  • We are academics. We've sorted it all out.
  • 00:35:56.220 --> 00:36:00.040
  • And when you read that, some angel couldn't get through
  • 00:36:00.050 --> 00:36:03.040
  • because it was some demon, and then another angel
  • 00:36:03.050 --> 00:36:05.120
  • had to help him.
  • 00:36:05.130 --> 00:36:07.210
  • You just kind of throw your hands in the air and just go,
  • 00:36:07.220 --> 00:36:10.270
  • "I don't know.
  • 00:36:10.280 --> 00:36:12.210
  • I just don't know.
  • 00:36:12.220 --> 00:36:14.110
  • All I know is I can trust the Lord."
  • 00:36:14.120 --> 00:36:16.070
  • It reminds me of actually once when I was sitting in the in
  • 00:36:16.080 --> 00:36:19.290
  • the airport for EL Al to fly to Israel, I was sitting
  • 00:36:20.000 --> 00:36:22.120
  • with two rabbis and I asked them about Calvinism,
  • 00:36:22.130 --> 00:36:25.090
  • which they didn't know who John Calvin was.
  • 00:36:25.100 --> 00:36:27.130
  • But I asked them I was like, "You know, if you take us to
  • 00:36:27.140 --> 00:36:29.190
  • the extreme, like, did God want me to lift this pencil?
  • 00:36:29.200 --> 00:36:31.250
  • And did God want me to sit here with you?
  • 00:36:31.260 --> 00:36:33.250
  • And did God have everything organized and everything planned
  • 00:36:33.260 --> 00:36:35.280
  • like clockwork?"
  • 00:36:35.290 --> 00:36:37.290
  • And these two rabbis with classic fashion,
  • 00:36:38.000 --> 00:36:39.210
  • they look at each other like, "What is he talking about?"
  • 00:36:39.220 --> 00:36:41.280
  • And one of them looks at me, he goes,
  • 00:36:41.290 --> 00:36:44.030
  • "Who can know such a thing?"
  • 00:36:44.040 --> 00:36:48.210
  • As a kid in seminary, that was really helpful for me.
  • 00:36:51.120 --> 00:36:54.070
  • And that was, it really was.
  • 00:36:54.080 --> 00:36:56.050
  • It was like such a Jewish answer, you know,
  • 00:36:56.060 --> 00:36:58.100
  • with the question.
  • 00:36:58.110 --> 00:37:00.170
  • It's like who can know?
  • 00:37:00.180 --> 00:37:02.100
  • What can we know?
  • 00:37:02.110 --> 00:37:04.040
  • We can know that God's delays are not God's denials,
  • 00:37:04.050 --> 00:37:08.050
  • that God has things behind the scenes in work,
  • 00:37:08.060 --> 00:37:11.140
  • at work for your life, that you can trust him.
  • 00:37:11.150 --> 00:37:15.130
  • You don't need to worry. You don't need to be frantic.
  • 00:37:15.140 --> 00:37:18.010
  • You don't need to be scared.
  • 00:37:18.020 --> 00:37:20.040
  • God's got this. He's got it under control.
  • 00:37:20.050 --> 00:37:22.140
  • He's got the whole world in his hands, including your life.
  • 00:37:22.150 --> 00:37:27.040
  • You're gonna be okay.
  • 00:37:27.050 --> 00:37:29.140
  • Now, I just want to say, you know,
  • 00:37:29.150 --> 00:37:32.020
  • God's delays are not God's denials.
  • 00:37:32.030 --> 00:37:34.040
  • And you know, every Sunday if you're here at church,
  • 00:37:34.050 --> 00:37:37.000
  • we gather and we say these two phrases, I don't need to?
  • 00:37:37.010 --> 00:37:42.090
  • And I don't need to?
  • 00:37:42.100 --> 00:37:44.200
  • I don't need to worry. I don't need to hurry.
  • 00:37:44.210 --> 00:37:46.150
  • You know why?
  • 00:37:46.160 --> 00:37:48.250
  • 'Cause God's not hurried. God's not worried.
  • 00:37:48.260 --> 00:37:53.180
  • He's not worried.
  • 00:37:53.190 --> 00:37:56.050
  • He's not worried 'cause he doesn't love you.
  • 00:37:56.060 --> 00:37:58.080
  • He does love you.
  • 00:37:58.090 --> 00:38:00.060
  • He's not worried 'cause he has all the power,
  • 00:38:00.070 --> 00:38:01.200
  • he's got it sorted out.
  • 00:38:01.210 --> 00:38:03.070
  • It'll be fine.
  • 00:38:03.080 --> 00:38:04.270
  • And so in the meantime, enjoy your life.
  • 00:38:04.280 --> 00:38:07.280
  • Don't spend it worrying, and spinning your wheels,
  • 00:38:07.290 --> 00:38:10.160
  • and feeling frustrated, and feeling angry, and bitter,
  • 00:38:10.170 --> 00:38:13.130
  • and jealous, self-pity.
  • 00:38:13.140 --> 00:38:15.260
  • Let it go.
  • 00:38:15.270 --> 00:38:17.220
  • And certainly don't hurry.
  • 00:38:17.230 --> 00:38:19.140
  • Hurry is always a position of weakness.
  • 00:38:19.150 --> 00:38:22.140
  • Think about it, when you're in a hurry,
  • 00:38:22.150 --> 00:38:24.230
  • you can't be compassionate to your neighbor.
  • 00:38:24.240 --> 00:38:26.290
  • When you're when you're in a hurry,
  • 00:38:27.000 --> 00:38:28.220
  • you can't be loving towards your spouse and kids.
  • 00:38:28.230 --> 00:38:31.060
  • You're unaware of the needs of those around you.
  • 00:38:31.070 --> 00:38:34.130
  • If you want to walk with God, you need to walk
  • 00:38:34.140 --> 00:38:37.220
  • at a walking pace.
  • 00:38:37.230 --> 00:38:41.120
  • So, God is not hurried 'cause God is never
  • 00:38:41.130 --> 00:38:43.100
  • in a position of weakness.
  • 00:38:43.110 --> 00:38:45.020
  • God is--it's just how he does, that's how he is.
  • 00:38:45.030 --> 00:38:47.230
  • So, God's delays are not God's denials, amen?
  • 00:38:47.240 --> 00:38:50.270
  • Let that encourage you if you're in that waiting place.
  • 00:38:50.280 --> 00:38:53.090
  • So, God's delays are not God's denials,
  • 00:38:53.100 --> 00:38:55.100
  • and God's decrease is not God's demotion.
  • 00:38:55.110 --> 00:38:59.290
  • Sometimes we think very often, "If I'm losing money or I'm
  • 00:39:00.020 --> 00:39:04.210
  • losing, you know, some maybe relationships in my life that I
  • 00:39:04.220 --> 00:39:08.110
  • don't want to go away, or some something's changing in my life
  • 00:39:08.120 --> 00:39:12.010
  • and I don't like it, we think is this God punishing me?
  • 00:39:12.020 --> 00:39:15.080
  • Is God demoting me?
  • 00:39:15.090 --> 00:39:17.080
  • Am I losing my status in the kingdom of God?"
  • 00:39:17.090 --> 00:39:20.260
  • And I want you to know that none of those things are true,
  • 00:39:20.270 --> 00:39:23.010
  • that God's decrease is not God's demotion.
  • 00:39:23.020 --> 00:39:25.130
  • In fact, very often, for God decrease in your life
  • 00:39:25.140 --> 00:39:30.230
  • will often come before promotion.
  • 00:39:30.240 --> 00:39:34.060
  • And I can name a lot of stories in the Word of God that show
  • 00:39:34.070 --> 00:39:37.160
  • that exact thing, but my favorite is the story of Gideon.
  • 00:39:37.170 --> 00:39:42.210
  • Now, Gideon is a judge in the Book of Judges,
  • 00:39:42.220 --> 00:39:46.060
  • but not a judge like we think today.
  • 00:39:46.070 --> 00:39:48.060
  • When we think of judges, we think of a guy with a white wig
  • 00:39:48.070 --> 00:39:51.040
  • on and a gavel and, you know, he's shouting it, you know,
  • 00:39:51.050 --> 00:39:54.220
  • Mr. Toad's wild ride or something, "Order."
  • 00:39:54.230 --> 00:39:57.260
  • And that's not what a judge is.
  • 00:39:57.270 --> 00:40:00.040
  • A judge is, think of a war chieftain, comes from
  • 00:40:00.050 --> 00:40:04.280
  • the Jewish word for justice, and the justice in this time
  • 00:40:04.290 --> 00:40:08.160
  • is usually in terms of war against evil man.
  • 00:40:08.170 --> 00:40:12.240
  • So, they're chieftains, right?
  • 00:40:12.250 --> 00:40:15.000
  • And there's this guy named Gideon and the Bible says,
  • 00:40:15.010 --> 00:40:17.270
  • listen, this is important, he is the weakest son
  • 00:40:17.280 --> 00:40:22.180
  • of the weakest clan of the weakest tribe of Israel.
  • 00:40:22.190 --> 00:40:28.130
  • He's probably the youngest.
  • 00:40:28.140 --> 00:40:30.140
  • Sounds a bit like David actually.
  • 00:40:30.150 --> 00:40:32.150
  • Weakest son of the weakest clan of the weakest tribe, and he is
  • 00:40:32.160 --> 00:40:35.130
  • the one God is gonna choose to defeat the Midianites.
  • 00:40:35.140 --> 00:40:39.210
  • Now the Midianites are a camelback, think of like
  • 00:40:39.220 --> 00:40:42.160
  • horse rider type raiders, they sort of look like the Hebrews.
  • 00:40:42.170 --> 00:40:46.270
  • They're also descendants of Abraham so racially,
  • 00:40:46.280 --> 00:40:49.080
  • they're very similar.
  • 00:40:49.090 --> 00:40:51.140
  • They're hard to distinguish from Jewish people, and this is gonna
  • 00:40:51.150 --> 00:40:53.190
  • be important in the story.
  • 00:40:53.200 --> 00:40:55.150
  • And you find that these guys are coming into Israel, raiding
  • 00:40:55.160 --> 00:40:57.200
  • farms, pillaging villages, and now for seven years,
  • 00:40:57.210 --> 00:41:01.230
  • God's people have been hiding up in the hills,
  • 00:41:01.240 --> 00:41:06.000
  • and a prophet had revealed to them the reason God
  • 00:41:06.010 --> 00:41:09.020
  • had allowed these camelback riders to come in and invade
  • 00:41:09.030 --> 00:41:12.280
  • is because God's people, who are supposed to be
  • 00:41:12.290 --> 00:41:16.140
  • a foundation of justice, and goodness, and righteousness,
  • 00:41:16.150 --> 00:41:21.260
  • are bowing down to Baal, and Asherah poles, and
  • 00:41:21.270 --> 00:41:25.000
  • even sacrificing children, which is so far outside of what God's
  • 00:41:25.010 --> 00:41:30.040
  • intent was for his new city and his covenant people.
  • 00:41:30.050 --> 00:41:34.070
  • And so, God allows them to be in this sort of
  • 00:41:34.080 --> 00:41:36.210
  • time of persecution.
  • 00:41:36.220 --> 00:41:38.220
  • And he raises up Gideon, and Gideon takes his dad's Asherah
  • 00:41:38.230 --> 00:41:41.130
  • pole and his altar to Baal and uses it for wood on
  • 00:41:41.140 --> 00:41:46.110
  • an altar for Yahweh God.
  • 00:41:46.120 --> 00:41:51.050
  • And these people, they get all upset, you know,
  • 00:41:51.060 --> 00:41:53.050
  • his own people, Jewish people.
  • 00:41:53.060 --> 00:41:54.250
  • "Why would you do this?"
  • 00:41:54.260 --> 00:41:56.170
  • And his father comes and defends him and it turns to this great
  • 00:41:56.180 --> 00:41:59.050
  • story where Gideon, this guy becomes, imagine,
  • 00:41:59.060 --> 00:42:02.010
  • picture William Wallace.
  • 00:42:02.020 --> 00:42:04.240
  • You know, he is going all around, he starts raising up
  • 00:42:04.250 --> 00:42:07.240
  • these tribes, and raising up men to kick out these Midianites
  • 00:42:07.250 --> 00:42:11.090
  • and protect our hometown.
  • 00:42:11.100 --> 00:42:13.230
  • Eventually, he raises an army of 32.000 men
  • 00:42:13.240 --> 00:42:19.100
  • to defend his hometown.
  • 00:42:19.110 --> 00:42:21.220
  • You know, militia army ragtag guys, and they arrived
  • 00:42:21.230 --> 00:42:26.180
  • to the Midianite army.
  • 00:42:26.190 --> 00:42:28.210
  • There's this face off and a river in between.
  • 00:42:28.220 --> 00:42:31.090
  • The Jewish army looks down at the Midianite army and the Bible
  • 00:42:31.100 --> 00:42:34.030
  • says that the Midianite army was so grand that it looked
  • 00:42:34.040 --> 00:42:39.280
  • as though the men were locusts covering the land.
  • 00:42:39.290 --> 00:42:44.130
  • Anybody here lived in the south before?
  • 00:42:44.140 --> 00:42:47.150
  • There's a lot of good things about the South, there is,
  • 00:42:47.160 --> 00:42:49.180
  • the food in particular, hospitality.
  • 00:42:49.190 --> 00:42:52.060
  • But there's one bad thing about the South and that's the bugs.
  • 00:42:52.070 --> 00:42:56.130
  • I remember a friend of mine from Oklahoma sent me a picture
  • 00:42:56.140 --> 00:43:00.180
  • of a gas station pump covered in grasshoppers,
  • 00:43:00.190 --> 00:43:04.200
  • so it's still in the shape of a pump but it was grasshoppers.
  • 00:43:04.210 --> 00:43:09.000
  • You know, it's like somebody to grasshopper paint
  • 00:43:09.010 --> 00:43:11.090
  • and covered this thing.
  • 00:43:11.100 --> 00:43:13.190
  • And this effect happens in the Middle East
  • 00:43:13.200 --> 00:43:15.200
  • where you have grasshoppers just covering everything.
  • 00:43:15.210 --> 00:43:20.050
  • And it said that the amount of their camels,
  • 00:43:20.060 --> 00:43:22.240
  • think of a camel as like a tank in today's standards.
  • 00:43:22.250 --> 00:43:26.070
  • The amount of their camels was outnumbered the sands
  • 00:43:26.080 --> 00:43:30.270
  • in the sea.
  • 00:43:30.280 --> 00:43:33.020
  • We're gonna pick an arbitrary number, 100.000 men,
  • 00:43:33.030 --> 00:43:35.270
  • are down on the opposite side of the river,
  • 00:43:35.280 --> 00:43:38.230
  • and Gideon is facing them with 32.000 men, and God
  • 00:43:38.240 --> 00:43:43.220
  • has promised them that they're gonna win this war.
  • 00:43:43.230 --> 00:43:46.290
  • So, Gideon goes before God and asks for what?
  • 00:43:47.000 --> 00:43:51.250
  • More men.
  • 00:43:51.260 --> 00:43:54.000
  • "I need more men. Lord, it's three to one.
  • 00:43:54.010 --> 00:43:56.150
  • If I'm gonna win this battle, I need more soldiers."
  • 00:43:56.160 --> 00:44:01.290
  • And what does God say?
  • 00:44:02.000 --> 00:44:04.010
  • "No you don't. No, you don't.
  • 00:44:04.020 --> 00:44:07.080
  • In fact, you need less."
  • 00:44:07.090 --> 00:44:12.000
  • So, he tells Gideon, "If you're gonna win this battle,
  • 00:44:12.010 --> 00:44:15.030
  • listen to me.
  • 00:44:15.040 --> 00:44:17.010
  • Go before your men and tell them, any one of you who is
  • 00:44:17.020 --> 00:44:21.110
  • afraid of this battle to fight the Midianites, you may leave
  • 00:44:21.120 --> 00:44:26.020
  • with honor and go hide in the mountain."
  • 00:44:26.030 --> 00:44:29.160
  • He makes this declaration before his army and of the 32.000,
  • 00:44:29.170 --> 00:44:33.240
  • 22.000 leave.
  • 00:44:33.250 --> 00:44:37.250
  • Now he's down to 10.000 and he's like, "God, it's ten to one.
  • 00:44:37.260 --> 00:44:46.120
  • I need more men."
  • 00:44:46.130 --> 00:44:49.000
  • And what does God say?
  • 00:44:49.010 --> 00:44:50.240
  • "No you don't.
  • 00:44:50.250 --> 00:44:52.290
  • Next thing I want you to do, go down to the spring, and I want
  • 00:44:53.000 --> 00:44:57.040
  • you to have all the men drink from the water and some
  • 00:44:57.050 --> 00:45:02.040
  • will drink like true, honorable gentlemen.
  • 00:45:02.050 --> 00:45:06.000
  • And some will drink like dogs.
  • 00:45:06.010 --> 00:45:08.260
  • Choose the dogs."
  • 00:45:08.270 --> 00:45:11.240
  • That's literally what happened.
  • 00:45:11.250 --> 00:45:13.240
  • So, he watches these 10.000 men, they go before the water.
  • 00:45:13.250 --> 00:45:15.250
  • And the way to drink like, gentlemanly as a soldier,
  • 00:45:15.260 --> 00:45:19.080
  • you kneel by the water, you go on one knee,
  • 00:45:19.090 --> 00:45:22.170
  • you never use your left hand for anything, and you scoop
  • 00:45:22.180 --> 00:45:25.010
  • with your right hand like this, and you drink like this.
  • 00:45:25.020 --> 00:45:28.210
  • This is how you drink.
  • 00:45:28.220 --> 00:45:31.010
  • And he said, "But some with their spears and shield at hand
  • 00:45:31.020 --> 00:45:34.250
  • will actually go down like this
  • 00:45:34.260 --> 00:45:38.200
  • and drink out of the water like that."
  • 00:45:38.210 --> 00:45:43.170
  • And he's like, "The guys that drink like that one,
  • 00:45:43.180 --> 00:45:46.160
  • pick those ones."
  • 00:45:46.170 --> 00:45:48.290
  • Now, it was interesting because I actually went to the very
  • 00:45:49.000 --> 00:45:52.160
  • spring in Israel where this story happened.
  • 00:45:52.170 --> 00:45:56.030
  • And the guy who was there was both a rabbi and an
  • 00:45:56.040 --> 00:45:58.260
  • archaeologist and he said, "You know, what we discovered is that
  • 00:45:58.270 --> 00:46:03.000
  • in the ancient days, the veteran like commando style soldiers,
  • 00:46:03.010 --> 00:46:09.050
  • one of the things that really grilled into them is never put
  • 00:46:09.060 --> 00:46:11.290
  • your weapon down when you're in the field.
  • 00:46:12.000 --> 00:46:14.240
  • Unless you absolutely have to, you always hold on
  • 00:46:14.250 --> 00:46:18.100
  • to your weapons."
  • 00:46:18.110 --> 00:46:20.110
  • And the reason they drink out of the water like dogs
  • 00:46:20.120 --> 00:46:23.060
  • is because they were holding a shield in one hand
  • 00:46:23.070 --> 00:46:26.190
  • and a spear in the other.
  • 00:46:26.200 --> 00:46:28.290
  • Even to drink, to do something as petty as drinking from water
  • 00:46:29.000 --> 00:46:32.130
  • to put your shield, and you just never do that,
  • 00:46:32.140 --> 00:46:34.290
  • and that is because if there's a surprise attack,
  • 00:46:35.000 --> 00:46:37.130
  • whoom, you're ready to go.
  • 00:46:37.140 --> 00:46:40.010
  • What was God doing?
  • 00:46:40.020 --> 00:46:42.150
  • Look, the 300 that were left were the real warriors.
  • 00:46:42.160 --> 00:46:48.220
  • He got rid of everyone except for--I mean,
  • 00:46:48.230 --> 00:46:52.110
  • these guys were tough as a coffin nail.
  • 00:46:52.120 --> 00:46:56.090
  • I mean hard as marble, cold as ice.
  • 00:46:56.100 --> 00:47:00.130
  • They were stone cold killers.
  • 00:47:00.140 --> 00:47:03.030
  • That's who was left, men of war, 300 solid men.
  • 00:47:03.040 --> 00:47:11.130
  • And these are the ones that Gideon was supposed
  • 00:47:11.140 --> 00:47:13.190
  • to fight with.
  • 00:47:13.200 --> 00:47:15.290
  • So, they takes these 300 guys, under God's command, breaks them
  • 00:47:16.000 --> 00:47:19.250
  • into three groups, and finds out, now he finds out actually
  • 00:47:19.260 --> 00:47:24.130
  • that there was this dream that this army was having,
  • 00:47:24.140 --> 00:47:28.170
  • that a loaf of barley bread was going to roll into the camp
  • 00:47:28.180 --> 00:47:34.090
  • and knock over all the tents.
  • 00:47:34.100 --> 00:47:36.180
  • The reason the imagery is like is because the Hebrew people
  • 00:47:36.190 --> 00:47:39.040
  • were farmers, and the Midianites were hunter gatherers.
  • 00:47:39.050 --> 00:47:42.020
  • So, the idea of a loaf of bread, they believed that this was some
  • 00:47:42.030 --> 00:47:46.000
  • bad omen that the Hebrew people were gonna come through and win.
  • 00:47:46.010 --> 00:47:50.250
  • And so, there's all this talk and chatter about this dream
  • 00:47:50.260 --> 00:47:54.010
  • that everybody's having about a loaf of bread that's gonna
  • 00:47:54.020 --> 00:47:56.170
  • roll into the camp, which is a funny image to me.
  • 00:47:56.180 --> 00:47:59.180
  • Anyway, Gideon's group of 300 men in the middle of the night,
  • 00:47:59.190 --> 00:48:02.160
  • two in the morning, just at the changing of the watch,
  • 00:48:02.170 --> 00:48:04.240
  • they break up into three groups of 100.
  • 00:48:04.250 --> 00:48:07.220
  • They're carrying pots with torches on the inside,
  • 00:48:07.230 --> 00:48:10.240
  • and they're carrying with them these battle horns that are also
  • 00:48:10.250 --> 00:48:13.250
  • used for worship called a shofar.
  • 00:48:13.260 --> 00:48:16.250
  • And they surround the army in the middle of the night.
  • 00:48:16.260 --> 00:48:19.140
  • And this army of 100.000 people is on pins and needles.
  • 00:48:19.150 --> 00:48:22.040
  • Real quick, how many of you went to a big college, 20.000,
  • 00:48:22.050 --> 00:48:25.050
  • 30.000 people?
  • 00:48:25.060 --> 00:48:27.140
  • Now, if you're ever in a big college of 30.000 people, most
  • 00:48:27.150 --> 00:48:30.180
  • of the people you meet you've never seen in your life.
  • 00:48:30.190 --> 00:48:33.120
  • It's like a little city.
  • 00:48:33.130 --> 00:48:35.150
  • I went to a high school of 2.000 and I saw people every day
  • 00:48:35.160 --> 00:48:38.240
  • I'd never met in my life.
  • 00:48:38.250 --> 00:48:41.030
  • Imagine being in an army of 100.000.
  • 00:48:41.040 --> 00:48:44.020
  • You do not know most of the people in that army.
  • 00:48:44.030 --> 00:48:49.060
  • Aside from the fact that you and the Hebrew people are very
  • 00:48:49.070 --> 00:48:52.200
  • similar looking, this creates a catastrophe for the Midianites.
  • 00:48:52.210 --> 00:48:57.070
  • They surround the army and they begin blowing these horns--
  • 00:48:57.080 --> 00:49:03.200
  • so like that these guys wake up in the middle of the night
  • 00:49:03.210 --> 00:49:07.000
  • surrounded by war cries.
  • 00:49:07.010 --> 00:49:10.090
  • The torches come out of the pots, the pots shatter
  • 00:49:10.100 --> 00:49:12.230
  • on the ground.
  • 00:49:12.240 --> 00:49:14.260
  • Flames erupts surrounding the army and these mean leave
  • 00:49:14.270 --> 00:49:18.220
  • fighting elite guy starts charging in
  • 00:49:18.230 --> 00:49:21.070
  • and just killing like crazy.
  • 00:49:21.080 --> 00:49:23.210
  • And the whole place goes frantic and everybody
  • 00:49:23.220 --> 00:49:26.080
  • starts killing each other.
  • 00:49:26.090 --> 00:49:28.210
  • All of these soldiers begin fighting and killing
  • 00:49:28.220 --> 00:49:30.150
  • and all this stuff.
  • 00:49:30.160 --> 00:49:32.150
  • Most of the army is destroyed and whoever's left runs away.
  • 00:49:32.160 --> 00:49:35.260
  • And as far as it looks, none of the 300 men
  • 00:49:35.270 --> 00:49:38.190
  • that were following Gideon even die.
  • 00:49:38.200 --> 00:49:41.120
  • Isn't that incredible?
  • 00:49:41.130 --> 00:49:43.200
  • And the thing I want you to hear from this is Gideon's way
  • 00:49:43.210 --> 00:49:46.160
  • was the Midianites way.
  • 00:49:46.170 --> 00:49:49.250
  • Again, let me say that again.
  • 00:49:49.260 --> 00:49:51.280
  • Gideon's way was the world's way.
  • 00:49:51.290 --> 00:49:54.090
  • More is better, more soldiers, more soldiers.
  • 00:49:54.100 --> 00:49:57.230
  • I need more.
  • 00:49:57.240 --> 00:50:00.020
  • But the very thing that Gideon wanted from God was
  • 00:50:00.030 --> 00:50:03.080
  • the very thing that led to the destruction of the Midianites.
  • 00:50:03.090 --> 00:50:08.240
  • What they thought was strength in numbers was actually
  • 00:50:08.250 --> 00:50:12.180
  • the thing that destroyed them.
  • 00:50:12.190 --> 00:50:14.270
  • They were bloated, encumbered.
  • 00:50:14.280 --> 00:50:17.160
  • They had hubris.
  • 00:50:17.170 --> 00:50:19.160
  • They were totally disconnected from each other.
  • 00:50:19.170 --> 00:50:23.050
  • What did Gideon have with these 300 men?
  • 00:50:23.060 --> 00:50:25.220
  • Lean, tough guys who all knew each other by name.
  • 00:50:25.230 --> 00:50:30.020
  • They were friends.
  • 00:50:30.030 --> 00:50:31.240
  • They marched together for days.
  • 00:50:31.250 --> 00:50:33.280
  • See, that's the difference.
  • 00:50:33.290 --> 00:50:36.050
  • And that's what we learned so often in Jesus way
  • 00:50:36.060 --> 00:50:38.090
  • is that more is not always better.
  • 00:50:38.100 --> 00:50:42.070
  • God's decrease in your life is not always God's demotion.
  • 00:50:42.080 --> 00:50:47.240
  • Sometimes God is decreasing things in your life
  • 00:50:47.250 --> 00:50:51.030
  • because he wants you to be fit for whatever is about to come.
  • 00:50:51.040 --> 00:50:55.010
  • He wants you to be ready for what's just around the corner.
  • 00:50:55.020 --> 00:50:58.180
  • In fact, I just want to proclaim over your life that even now if
  • 00:50:58.190 --> 00:51:01.250
  • you're experiencing decrease, to get excited
  • 00:51:01.260 --> 00:51:04.290
  • because it means God's about to do something great in your life.
  • 00:51:05.000 --> 00:51:08.140
  • I just believe that for you.
  • 00:51:08.150 --> 00:51:10.280
  • I'll just close with this story.
  • 00:51:10.290 --> 00:51:13.130
  • It's interesting how we, as Americans,
  • 00:51:13.140 --> 00:51:15.170
  • feel so safe when we have more money, more stuff,
  • 00:51:15.180 --> 00:51:18.290
  • more luxuries, and yet all of those things,
  • 00:51:19.000 --> 00:51:23.230
  • God gives and takes away all these things.
  • 00:51:23.240 --> 00:51:26.070
  • And I remember when we first planted our church at the
  • 00:51:26.080 --> 00:51:29.070
  • gathering years ago, we wanted to dedicate our church to God.
  • 00:51:29.080 --> 00:51:33.260
  • And the way we were gonna do that was by giving away all of
  • 00:51:33.270 --> 00:51:37.100
  • our tithes and offerings to the poor the first year that we met,
  • 00:51:37.110 --> 00:51:40.160
  • and we basically decided to put God to the test and see,
  • 00:51:40.170 --> 00:51:43.280
  • "All right, you said if you give 10% of your money,
  • 00:51:43.290 --> 00:51:46.270
  • that you'll open up heaven.
  • 00:51:46.280 --> 00:51:49.020
  • We're gonna give away 100% of our money and see
  • 00:51:49.030 --> 00:51:51.010
  • what you can do with that."
  • 00:51:51.020 --> 00:51:52.230
  • And God really did bless us,
  • 00:51:52.240 --> 00:51:54.150
  • but that's not the point of the story.
  • 00:51:54.160 --> 00:51:56.120
  • Because of that, we created a church that was very geared
  • 00:51:56.130 --> 00:51:58.190
  • towards helping those who are in need.
  • 00:51:58.200 --> 00:52:00.210
  • And one project that we would do is clean houses of hoarders.
  • 00:52:00.220 --> 00:52:03.250
  • There was a guy in our, loosely affiliated with our network,
  • 00:52:03.260 --> 00:52:08.030
  • an older gentleman, his wife had a heart attack and the fire
  • 00:52:08.040 --> 00:52:12.140
  • department came to bring her out of the house.
  • 00:52:12.150 --> 00:52:15.020
  • And when they got there, they couldn't get to her
  • 00:52:15.030 --> 00:52:17.110
  • because the house was so full of trash, old mail, newspapers,
  • 00:52:17.120 --> 00:52:22.120
  • things like that, that they weren't able to get
  • 00:52:22.130 --> 00:52:24.290
  • the gurney to her.
  • 00:52:25.000 --> 00:52:27.000
  • And so, when they finally were able to clear stuff with axes
  • 00:52:27.010 --> 00:52:29.080
  • and things and get her out, they condemned the house
  • 00:52:29.090 --> 00:52:31.180
  • and wouldn't allow our friend back into his home.
  • 00:52:31.190 --> 00:52:34.070
  • So, his group of friends who knew us said,
  • 00:52:34.080 --> 00:52:36.110
  • "Would you help us clean out this house so
  • 00:52:36.120 --> 00:52:38.180
  • so-and-so can move back into their home?"
  • 00:52:38.190 --> 00:52:40.100
  • And man, let me tell you, I wish I'd had a camera.
  • 00:52:40.110 --> 00:52:42.290
  • This was crazy.
  • 00:52:43.000 --> 00:52:44.250
  • We went in, he had kept--you know, I think he grew up
  • 00:52:44.260 --> 00:52:47.290
  • in The Depression, and I totally understand when people
  • 00:52:48.000 --> 00:52:51.280
  • feel this fear about having more.
  • 00:52:51.290 --> 00:52:54.140
  • But he would never throw a mail, or newspapers, or anything,
  • 00:52:54.150 --> 00:52:58.060
  • and it all clustered along the walls all the way
  • 00:52:58.070 --> 00:53:02.030
  • to the ceiling, and through the years and
  • 00:53:02.040 --> 00:53:04.040
  • years that he lived there, it all kind of melded
  • 00:53:04.050 --> 00:53:07.040
  • into each other so that there were like hallways through
  • 00:53:07.050 --> 00:53:10.130
  • trash that you would do to navigate the downstairs.
  • 00:53:10.140 --> 00:53:13.260
  • The whole upstairs was completely overrun.
  • 00:53:13.270 --> 00:53:15.290
  • There was a beehive up there.
  • 00:53:16.000 --> 00:53:18.020
  • They wouldn't even go up anymore so they slept on the couch.
  • 00:53:18.030 --> 00:53:21.060
  • And so, like there's like 15 of us from the church,
  • 00:53:21.070 --> 00:53:23.200
  • we just began cleaning it out.
  • 00:53:23.210 --> 00:53:25.080
  • And I remember like, when you pulled the paper off,
  • 00:53:25.090 --> 00:53:27.150
  • it didn't come off, like papers would shuffle up,
  • 00:53:27.160 --> 00:53:29.290
  • it broke like styrofoam.
  • 00:53:30.000 --> 00:53:32.110
  • It'd just go koof, like this,
  • 00:53:32.120 --> 00:53:34.000
  • and you would just have a cube of whatever.
  • 00:53:34.010 --> 00:53:37.000
  • And it was always like a fortune cookie, you never knew
  • 00:53:37.010 --> 00:53:39.230
  • what you were gonna get when you pulled it out.
  • 00:53:39.240 --> 00:53:41.290
  • Some of them had ant colonies, other had cockroach colonies.
  • 00:53:42.000 --> 00:53:45.120
  • There was a snake nest underneath the sink.
  • 00:53:45.130 --> 00:53:47.210
  • There were raccoons.
  • 00:53:47.220 --> 00:53:49.290
  • And it was just, it was just gross, and it took us forever.
  • 00:53:50.000 --> 00:53:54.070
  • We cleaned it out.
  • 00:53:54.080 --> 00:53:56.010
  • Anything that was remote--no matter how dirty or whatever,
  • 00:53:56.020 --> 00:53:58.140
  • anything was remotely salvageable, we left it there.
  • 00:53:58.150 --> 00:54:00.260
  • We just throw away the trash and then we cleaned up,
  • 00:54:00.270 --> 00:54:02.290
  • repaired, painted everything.
  • 00:54:03.000 --> 00:54:04.260
  • So spent hundreds of hours, thousands of dollars fixing
  • 00:54:04.270 --> 00:54:07.150
  • this guy's house as this gift.
  • 00:54:07.160 --> 00:54:09.160
  • And we thought, wow, he's gonna be so glad.
  • 00:54:09.170 --> 00:54:12.070
  • And when he got back and he looked at his house,
  • 00:54:12.080 --> 00:54:15.170
  • he just went, "No!"
  • 00:54:15.180 --> 00:54:19.230
  • And for me, that was, my heart really went out to the man
  • 00:54:19.240 --> 00:54:23.110
  • because I saw in this friend of ours,
  • 00:54:23.120 --> 00:54:27.070
  • I saw something in myself that, you know,
  • 00:54:27.080 --> 00:54:30.290
  • he was holding what was really dangerous for him,
  • 00:54:31.000 --> 00:54:34.100
  • and could have caused people to get sick
  • 00:54:34.110 --> 00:54:36.130
  • and made his house unlivable,
  • 00:54:36.140 --> 00:54:38.280
  • was something that he held on to.
  • 00:54:38.290 --> 00:54:42.040
  • And I thought, "Lord, in what ways am I holding on to material
  • 00:54:42.050 --> 00:54:47.070
  • things in my life, thinking they're gonna save me or
  • 00:54:47.080 --> 00:54:50.190
  • help me when the test really comes?
  • 00:54:50.200 --> 00:54:54.290
  • In what ways am I encumbered?
  • 00:54:55.000 --> 00:54:57.220
  • And we live in a world where God blesses people,
  • 00:54:57.230 --> 00:55:00.170
  • and God gives and he takes away.
  • 00:55:00.180 --> 00:55:02.250
  • God loves.
  • 00:55:02.260 --> 00:55:04.200
  • I don't think God wants you to be poor or anything like that,
  • 00:55:04.210 --> 00:55:07.070
  • but there are seasons in our life where we experience
  • 00:55:07.080 --> 00:55:10.010
  • decrease, and we think we're under a curse or punishment.
  • 00:55:10.020 --> 00:55:14.060
  • It's just not the case.
  • 00:55:14.070 --> 00:55:15.280
  • It's not what we see in Scripture.
  • 00:55:15.290 --> 00:55:17.190
  • What we see is the opposite is that very often, the way that
  • 00:55:17.200 --> 00:55:20.070
  • God wants to get us where we need to go is through decrease,
  • 00:55:20.080 --> 00:55:23.190
  • is through cleaning out some things in our life.
  • 00:55:23.200 --> 00:55:25.240
  • Maybe you just lost something in your life, or lost some,
  • 00:55:25.250 --> 00:55:28.080
  • you know, something that you treasure,
  • 00:55:28.090 --> 00:55:30.040
  • something that's valuable to you and you think,
  • 00:55:30.050 --> 00:55:31.140
  • "How can I go on?"
  • 00:55:31.150 --> 00:55:32.260
  • I want you to know that you still have great things
  • 00:55:32.270 --> 00:55:35.040
  • ahead of you.
  • 00:55:35.050 --> 00:55:36.210
  • You want another Schullerism?
  • 00:55:36.220 --> 00:55:38.140
  • Don't focus on what you've lost, focus on what you have left.
  • 00:55:38.150 --> 00:55:42.160
  • God has something great in store for you.
  • 00:55:42.170 --> 00:55:44.250
  • I want to promise you that if you continue to live and endure
  • 00:55:44.260 --> 00:55:48.020
  • the space of not knowing, "When I'm gonna get there
  • 00:55:48.030 --> 00:55:51.030
  • or why I'm experiencing decrease?"
  • 00:55:51.040 --> 00:55:53.100
  • When you cross that finish line, you'll look back on this day
  • 00:55:53.110 --> 00:55:55.150
  • and you'll be glad you endured.
  • 00:55:55.160 --> 00:55:58.050
  • And my friend, you will endure.
  • 00:55:58.060 --> 00:56:00.140
  • We believe in you, God believes in you, and we are on your side.
  • 00:56:00.150 --> 00:56:04.050
  • So, we just trust that the Lord who is a loving Father
  • 00:56:04.060 --> 00:56:07.160
  • has our best in mind.
  • 00:56:07.170 --> 00:56:09.130
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:56:09.140 --> 00:56:11.110
  • Lord, we thank you that God's delays are not God's denials,
  • 00:56:11.120 --> 00:56:16.160
  • Lord, that your decrease is not your demotion.
  • 00:56:16.170 --> 00:56:20.080
  • We thank you that your ways are not always our ways
  • 00:56:20.090 --> 00:56:22.180
  • and that we can trust you, God.
  • 00:56:22.190 --> 00:56:24.160
  • I pray, Father, just abundant favor and blessing over those
  • 00:56:24.170 --> 00:56:27.140
  • who are in our life.
  • 00:56:27.150 --> 00:56:29.060
  • I pray for health and financial blessing.
  • 00:56:29.070 --> 00:56:31.020
  • But more than that, help us to be more and more like Jesus
  • 00:56:31.030 --> 00:56:35.030
  • so that when we face sickness, and when we face poverty,
  • 00:56:35.040 --> 00:56:38.150
  • we face loss and difficulty, Lord, that it only makes us
  • 00:56:38.160 --> 00:56:42.000
  • more like you.
  • 00:56:42.010 --> 00:56:43.250
  • It actually helps us to become more joyful, more loving,
  • 00:56:43.260 --> 00:56:46.180
  • more compassionate, more empathetic, stronger.
  • 00:56:46.190 --> 00:56:50.060
  • Lord, I pray for that.
  • 00:56:50.070 --> 00:56:51.160
  • Thank you for your blessing. We love you.
  • 00:56:51.170 --> 00:56:53.020
  • It's in Jesus's name we pray, amen.
  • 00:56:53.030 --> 00:56:55.200
  • 00:56:56.100 --> 00:57:03.010
  • Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:03.020 --> 00:57:05.130
  • Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:05.140 --> 00:57:07.090
  • Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:07.100 --> 00:57:09.210
  • Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:09.220 --> 00:57:12.110
  • King of kings, and Lord of lords
  • 00:57:12.120 --> 00:57:17.010
  • King of kings, and Lord of lords
  • 00:57:17.040 --> 00:57:21.190
  • And He shall reign forever and ever
  • 00:57:21.200 --> 00:57:28.210
  • King of kings and Lord of lords
  • 00:57:28.220 --> 00:57:33.110
  • Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:33.120 --> 00:57:35.130
  • Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:35.160 --> 00:57:37.250
  • Hallelujah!
  • 00:57:39.010 --> 00:57:49.010
  • Bobby: And now the Lord bless you and keep you.
  • 00:57:50.070 --> 00:57:52.000
  • The Lord make his face to shine upon you
  • 00:57:52.010 --> 00:57:54.130
  • and be gracious unto you.
  • 00:57:54.140 --> 00:57:56.060
  • The Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you his peace.
  • 00:57:56.070 --> 00:57:59.210
  • In the name of the Father and of the Son
  • 00:57:59.220 --> 00:58:02.050
  • and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
