  • 00:00:20.170 --> 00:00:30.170
  • male announcer: We can all use some encouragement,
  • 00:00:33.000 --> 00:00:35.080
  • and today you'll find it in the Bible-based preaching
  • 00:00:35.090 --> 00:00:37.040
  • of Dr. Don Wilton right here on, "The Encouraging Word."
  • 00:00:37.050 --> 00:00:40.200
  • Dr. Don Wilton: Take a look over here at the map
  • 00:00:41.120 --> 00:00:43.100
  • with me today.
  • 00:00:43.110 --> 00:00:45.150
  • This is very important, and I want to spend just
  • 00:00:45.160 --> 00:00:51.230
  • a few moments telling you some fantastic things about Paul.
  • 00:00:51.240 --> 00:00:58.220
  • Our subject today is entitled "Willing Servanthood,"
  • 00:00:58.230 --> 00:01:07.120
  • "Willing Servanthood."
  • 00:01:07.130 --> 00:01:10.170
  • I want you to just think about that.
  • 00:01:10.180 --> 00:01:13.100
  • I'm looking upon so many servants of the Lord.
  • 00:01:13.110 --> 00:01:17.110
  • A servant is someone who serves, serves the one who sends them,
  • 00:01:17.120 --> 00:01:26.100
  • does everything for the person for whom they work,
  • 00:01:26.110 --> 00:01:30.170
  • under whose employ they operate.
  • 00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:36.060
  • So, here is the Apostle Paul, and God speaks to him
  • 00:01:36.070 --> 00:01:41.240
  • and to those that were with him.
  • 00:01:41.250 --> 00:01:43.220
  • And we find him right here in this town,
  • 00:01:43.230 --> 00:01:47.120
  • this city called Troas right there.
  • 00:01:47.130 --> 00:01:50.190
  • By the way, to orient you, Troy, the ancient city of Troy
  • 00:01:50.200 --> 00:01:56.070
  • was not too far.
  • 00:01:56.080 --> 00:01:57.210
  • The reason those dots are there is that Troy as a town,
  • 00:01:57.220 --> 00:02:02.060
  • as a city, as a place no longer exists,
  • 00:02:02.070 --> 00:02:06.170
  • but that's where Troy is.
  • 00:02:06.180 --> 00:02:09.020
  • Some of you are familiar with that with some
  • 00:02:09.030 --> 00:02:11.140
  • of the great battles that took place.
  • 00:02:11.150 --> 00:02:13.190
  • But they get here to Troy in the province of Mysia,
  • 00:02:13.200 --> 00:02:18.080
  • and of course, we remember that Paul and Barnabas decided that
  • 00:02:18.090 --> 00:02:25.050
  • they wanted to go up here into Bithynia and the Holy Spirit
  • 00:02:25.060 --> 00:02:28.070
  • said, "No, I don't want you to go there."
  • 00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:30.180
  • And they heard, they saw a vision from Macedonia.
  • 00:02:30.190 --> 00:02:36.260
  • This is the province here in Greece, saying,
  • 00:02:36.270 --> 00:02:40.240
  • "Come over here.
  • 00:02:40.250 --> 00:02:42.100
  • God was speaking to them, and this is the point at which
  • 00:02:42.110 --> 00:02:46.140
  • servanthood becomes such a reality because God said
  • 00:02:46.150 --> 00:02:52.090
  • to these people, "I want you to come to Macedonia,"
  • 00:02:52.100 --> 00:02:57.280
  • and they said, "Yes, Lord, we will go and serve you."
  • 00:02:57.290 --> 00:03:02.230
  • So here they are right on the edge of the Aegean Sea,
  • 00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:06.070
  • and they get on a ship, and that journey from Troas to Neapolis
  • 00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:13.020
  • is a very arduous part of the journey.
  • 00:03:13.030 --> 00:03:16.200
  • We're gonna discover on his third missionary journey,
  • 00:03:16.210 --> 00:03:20.050
  • when they were coming back, we will see that,
  • 00:03:20.060 --> 00:03:22.220
  • some weeks later, that that journey took them
  • 00:03:22.230 --> 00:03:25.000
  • five days coming back.
  • 00:03:25.010 --> 00:03:28.180
  • On this trip, when they left Troas,
  • 00:03:28.190 --> 00:03:32.030
  • they pulled in to this place here called Samothrace,
  • 00:03:32.040 --> 00:03:39.250
  • Samothrace, all right?
  • 00:03:39.260 --> 00:03:42.290
  • In the Greek, it's just got a "K" there.
  • 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:45.200
  • It looks like Samothrack.
  • 00:03:45.210 --> 00:03:49.050
  • That's how you really pronounce it,
  • 00:03:49.060 --> 00:03:50.290
  • "Samothrack," but I'm gonna say it in American,
  • 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:54.000
  • Samothrace, all right?
  • 00:03:54.010 --> 00:03:57.060
  • There it is right there, and that there is a little island.
  • 00:03:57.070 --> 00:04:01.110
  • So, they leave Troas.
  • 00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:03.100
  • They go to Samothrace, which is under Macedonian rule.
  • 00:04:03.110 --> 00:04:08.130
  • And the they get on the ship and they land here
  • 00:04:08.140 --> 00:04:11.100
  • at the port city of Neapolis.
  • 00:04:11.110 --> 00:04:14.090
  • Not a lot about Neapolis.
  • 00:04:14.100 --> 00:04:16.080
  • It really was the port city to the gateway to Macedonia,
  • 00:04:16.090 --> 00:04:19.280
  • and that part of modern-day Greece,
  • 00:04:19.290 --> 00:04:24.060
  • northern Turkey.
  • 00:04:24.070 --> 00:04:26.200
  • And this area here in Neapolis, over the decades and centuries,
  • 00:04:26.210 --> 00:04:33.160
  • got wracked by one war after another.
  • 00:04:33.170 --> 00:04:37.090
  • Anybody who ever won any war wanted to control Neapolis
  • 00:04:37.100 --> 00:04:42.000
  • because it was very strategic on the upper peninsula of Macedonia
  • 00:04:42.010 --> 00:04:46.260
  • here leading into greater Asia.
  • 00:04:46.270 --> 00:04:49.160
  • So, they land here in Neapolis, and they take about the 10-mile
  • 00:04:49.170 --> 00:04:54.040
  • journey, 8 to 10-mile journey, to the town of Philippi.
  • 00:04:54.050 --> 00:05:00.290
  • Now, we know a lot about Philippi.
  • 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:04.170
  • For example, we know that Luke, who wrote not only the Gospel
  • 00:05:04.180 --> 00:05:11.180
  • of Luke but the book of Acts, Philippi was his home town.
  • 00:05:11.190 --> 00:05:17.240
  • And Luke was with Paul.
  • 00:05:17.250 --> 00:05:19.230
  • We know that 'cause in Acts chapter 16,
  • 00:05:19.240 --> 00:05:23.280
  • we find the little royal "we."
  • 00:05:23.290 --> 00:05:26.120
  • "We went from here to there to there."
  • 00:05:26.130 --> 00:05:28.170
  • This is Luke writing, and Luke includes himself.
  • 00:05:28.180 --> 00:05:32.120
  • So, when you see the subject of "we," he's including himself
  • 00:05:32.130 --> 00:05:36.150
  • as the author, the writer.
  • 00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:38.120
  • So we know that Luke here was going back to Philippi.
  • 00:05:38.130 --> 00:05:41.090
  • Just one more thing that I want to tell you about Philippi that
  • 00:05:41.100 --> 00:05:44.230
  • I think is very important for us to know.
  • 00:05:44.240 --> 00:05:47.240
  • Mostly Roman people, the Jews were in a minority.
  • 00:05:47.250 --> 00:05:55.190
  • But out of the general population,
  • 00:05:55.200 --> 00:05:58.210
  • there was a very small group of very,
  • 00:05:58.220 --> 00:06:01.260
  • very powerful Roman men who controlled the city.
  • 00:06:01.270 --> 00:06:11.270
  • In fact, the Pharisees often prayed prayers that went
  • 00:06:12.200 --> 00:06:16.170
  • like this: "I thank God that I'm not a Gentile,
  • 00:06:16.180 --> 00:06:22.240
  • and I thank God that I'm not a slave,
  • 00:06:22.250 --> 00:06:26.070
  • and I certainly thank God that I'm not a woman."
  • 00:06:26.080 --> 00:06:30.210
  • That's how they prayed.
  • 00:06:30.220 --> 00:06:33.000
  • Paul rejected that because Paul believed that,
  • 00:06:33.010 --> 00:06:37.030
  • "there is neither Jew nor Greek, neither bond nor free,
  • 00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:41.270
  • neither male nor female because we are all one
  • 00:06:41.280 --> 00:06:45.290
  • in and through the Lord Jesus Christ."
  • 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:48.270
  • And so what happens here at Philippi is very critical
  • 00:06:48.280 --> 00:06:52.190
  • on this trip.
  • 00:06:52.200 --> 00:06:54.090
  • Let me read it to you.
  • 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:56.090
  • I want you to take your Bibles and turn with me
  • 00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:58.170
  • to Acts chapter 16, Acts chapter 16.
  • 00:06:58.180 --> 00:07:06.290
  • I'm gonna begin reading at verse 11.
  • 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.120
  • And just follow along because it's gonna make a little more
  • 00:07:10.130 --> 00:07:13.110
  • sense to you now that I've taken you on a little bit
  • 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.240
  • of a journey.
  • 00:07:15.250 --> 00:07:17.190
  • "So, setting sail from Troas, we," there's the we,
  • 00:07:17.200 --> 00:07:21.020
  • "made a direct voyage to Samothrace,
  • 00:07:21.030 --> 00:07:25.110
  • and the following day to Neapolis,
  • 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:29.140
  • and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city
  • 00:07:29.150 --> 00:07:33.110
  • of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony.
  • 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:38.260
  • We remained there in this city some days.
  • 00:07:38.270 --> 00:07:41.190
  • On the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to
  • 00:07:41.200 --> 00:07:45.190
  • the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer,
  • 00:07:45.200 --> 00:07:49.130
  • and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together.
  • 00:07:49.140 --> 00:07:55.070
  • One who heard us was a woman named Lydia,
  • 00:07:55.080 --> 00:07:59.110
  • she came from Thyatira," Revelation,
  • 00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:03.250
  • makers of purple and the church at Thyatira,
  • 00:08:03.260 --> 00:08:10.140
  • "a seller of purple goods, who was also a worshiper of God.
  • 00:08:10.150 --> 00:08:15.070
  • The Lord opened her heart to pay attention
  • 00:08:15.080 --> 00:08:17.070
  • to what was said by Paul.
  • 00:08:17.080 --> 00:08:19.040
  • And after she was baptized, and her household as well,
  • 00:08:19.050 --> 00:08:22.020
  • she urged us, saying, 'If you have judged me
  • 00:08:22.030 --> 00:08:25.020
  • to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.'
  • 00:08:25.030 --> 00:08:28.250
  • And she prevailed upon us.
  • 00:08:28.260 --> 00:08:31.190
  • As we were going to the place of prayer,
  • 00:08:31.200 --> 00:08:34.030
  • we were also met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination
  • 00:08:34.040 --> 00:08:38.260
  • and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling."
  • 00:08:38.270 --> 00:08:44.130
  • She was a fortune teller, which is contradictory
  • 00:08:44.140 --> 00:08:48.070
  • to the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:08:48.080 --> 00:08:52.180
  • Don't get involved in fortune-telling.
  • 00:08:52.190 --> 00:08:58.240
  • "She followed Paul and us, crying out,
  • 00:08:58.250 --> 00:09:04.080
  • 'These men are servants of the Most High God,
  • 00:09:04.090 --> 00:09:08.230
  • who proclaim to you the way of salvation.'
  • 00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:12.110
  • And this she kept doing for many days.
  • 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:14.240
  • Paul, having become greatly annoyed,
  • 00:09:14.250 --> 00:09:17.170
  • turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you
  • 00:09:17.180 --> 00:09:19.200
  • in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.'
  • 00:09:19.210 --> 00:09:23.120
  • And it came out that very hour.
  • 00:09:23.130 --> 00:09:26.090
  • But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone,
  • 00:09:26.100 --> 00:09:29.260
  • they seized Paul and Silas, dragged them
  • 00:09:29.270 --> 00:09:32.270
  • into the marketplace before the rulers.
  • 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:35.100
  • And when they had brought them to the magistrates,
  • 00:09:35.110 --> 00:09:37.170
  • they said, 'These men are Jews, and they are
  • 00:09:37.180 --> 00:09:39.250
  • disturbing our city.
  • 00:09:39.260 --> 00:09:42.000
  • They advocate customs that are not lawful for us Romans
  • 00:09:42.010 --> 00:09:44.220
  • to accept or practice.'
  • 00:09:44.230 --> 00:09:47.130
  • The crowd joined in attacking them,
  • 00:09:47.140 --> 00:09:50.030
  • and the magistrates tore the garments off them
  • 00:09:50.040 --> 00:09:52.160
  • and gave them over to be beaten with rods.
  • 00:09:52.170 --> 00:09:55.290
  • And when they'd inflicted many blows upon them,
  • 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.180
  • they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer
  • 00:09:58.190 --> 00:10:01.050
  • to keep them safely.
  • 00:10:01.060 --> 00:10:03.000
  • Having received this order, he put them into
  • 00:10:03.010 --> 00:10:05.030
  • the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
  • 00:10:05.040 --> 00:10:09.280
  • About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns
  • 00:10:09.290 --> 00:10:12.260
  • to God, and the prisoners were listening to them,
  • 00:10:12.270 --> 00:10:15.230
  • suddenly there was a great earthquake,
  • 00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:17.280
  • so the foundations of the prison were shaken.
  • 00:10:17.290 --> 00:10:20.130
  • And immediately all the doors were opened,
  • 00:10:20.140 --> 00:10:23.200
  • and everyone's bonds were unfastened.
  • 00:10:23.210 --> 00:10:26.040
  • When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open,
  • 00:10:26.050 --> 00:10:29.290
  • he drew his sword, was about to kill himself,
  • 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:32.030
  • supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
  • 00:10:32.040 --> 00:10:35.150
  • But Paul cried with a loud voice,
  • 00:10:35.160 --> 00:10:37.120
  • 'Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.'
  • 00:10:37.130 --> 00:10:41.120
  • And the jailer called for lights, rushed in,
  • 00:10:41.130 --> 00:10:44.000
  • and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas.
  • 00:10:44.010 --> 00:10:48.130
  • Then he brought them out and said,
  • 00:10:48.140 --> 00:10:49.260
  • 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
  • 00:10:49.270 --> 00:10:53.210
  • They said, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, you will be saved,
  • 00:10:53.220 --> 00:10:56.220
  • you and your household.'
  • 00:10:56.230 --> 00:10:58.240
  • And they spoke the Word of the Lord to him
  • 00:10:58.250 --> 00:11:00.200
  • and to all who were in his house.
  • 00:11:00.210 --> 00:11:03.050
  • And he took them the same hour of the night,
  • 00:11:03.060 --> 00:11:05.150
  • washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once,
  • 00:11:05.160 --> 00:11:09.000
  • he and all his family.
  • 00:11:09.010 --> 00:11:11.190
  • Then he brought them into the house,
  • 00:11:11.200 --> 00:11:13.100
  • set food before them.
  • 00:11:13.110 --> 00:11:14.200
  • And he rejoiced along with his entire household
  • 00:11:14.210 --> 00:11:16.270
  • that he had believed in God.
  • 00:11:16.280 --> 00:11:19.140
  • But when it was day, the magistrates sent the police,
  • 00:11:19.150 --> 00:11:21.290
  • saying, 'Let those men go.'
  • 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:24.290
  • And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying,
  • 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:27.060
  • 'The magistrates have sent to let you go.
  • 00:11:27.070 --> 00:11:30.240
  • Therefore come out now and go in peace.'
  • 00:11:30.250 --> 00:11:33.020
  • But Paul said to them, 'They've beaten us publicly,
  • 00:11:33.030 --> 00:11:36.040
  • uncondemned, men who are Roman citizens, and have thrown us
  • 00:11:36.050 --> 00:11:40.190
  • into prison; do they now throw us out secretly?
  • 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:43.160
  • No!
  • 00:11:43.170 --> 00:11:45.210
  • Let them come out themselves and take us out.'
  • 00:11:45.220 --> 00:11:49.110
  • The police reported these words to the magistrates,
  • 00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:52.090
  • and they were afraid when they heard that
  • 00:11:52.100 --> 00:11:55.150
  • they were Roman citizens.
  • 00:11:55.160 --> 00:11:57.150
  • So they came, apologized to them.
  • 00:11:57.160 --> 00:12:00.140
  • And they took them out and asked them to leave the city.
  • 00:12:00.150 --> 00:12:03.170
  • So when they went out of the prison,
  • 00:12:03.180 --> 00:12:06.050
  • they went back to visit Lydia.
  • 00:12:06.060 --> 00:12:09.200
  • And when they had seen all the church folks,
  • 00:12:09.210 --> 00:12:13.160
  • the brothers and the sisters, they encouraged them
  • 00:12:13.170 --> 00:12:19.210
  • and they went on their way."
  • 00:12:19.220 --> 00:12:22.140
  • May the Lord write this Word on our hearts.
  • 00:12:22.150 --> 00:12:24.200
  • What a journey.
  • 00:12:24.210 --> 00:12:26.130
  • Let's take a look at this map.
  • 00:12:26.140 --> 00:12:28.050
  • Here they are, Troas.
  • 00:12:28.060 --> 00:12:30.080
  • They hear God telling them, "Are you willing to be my servants?"
  • 00:12:30.090 --> 00:12:34.260
  • They were already--remember, they've taken this long trip
  • 00:12:34.270 --> 00:12:36.280
  • here all the way from Antioch.
  • 00:12:36.290 --> 00:12:39.160
  • They stop in Samothrace.
  • 00:12:39.170 --> 00:12:41.130
  • They go to the port city of Neapolis.
  • 00:12:41.140 --> 00:12:43.050
  • Now they're in Philippi, and extraordinary things happen.
  • 00:12:43.060 --> 00:12:50.010
  • A couple of thoughts here about their willingness.
  • 00:12:50.020 --> 00:12:52.120
  • Number one, it seems to me they were willing to move on
  • 00:12:52.130 --> 00:12:57.000
  • or to stay long.
  • 00:12:57.010 --> 00:13:02.120
  • Their willing servants hearts open before the Lord is
  • 00:13:02.130 --> 00:13:11.000
  • replete with one-night stops, seven-day stops, two-year stops.
  • 00:13:11.010 --> 00:13:20.010
  • That's what servants do.
  • 00:13:20.020 --> 00:13:23.260
  • Servants never tell God where or how long.
  • 00:13:23.270 --> 00:13:32.290
  • Number two, they were willing to find the right place to pray.
  • 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:40.290
  • Isn't it amazing that Paul and Barnabas and Luke
  • 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:47.040
  • and the team arrived in Philippi and of utmost important was
  • 00:13:47.050 --> 00:13:52.230
  • to find the right place to pray?
  • 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:58.140
  • It seems like they were on a mission in the mission,
  • 00:13:58.150 --> 00:14:05.130
  • and they were gonna do whatever it took.
  • 00:14:05.140 --> 00:14:08.060
  • Paul understood the value of getting alongside people.
  • 00:14:08.070 --> 00:14:12.180
  • They were going to bless them and build them up,
  • 00:14:12.190 --> 00:14:15.110
  • partners in prayer.
  • 00:14:15.120 --> 00:14:19.080
  • There wasn't a synagogue, and so they went to the outside
  • 00:14:19.090 --> 00:14:22.280
  • of the city, and there they were.
  • 00:14:22.290 --> 00:14:26.250
  • And what did they do when they got there?
  • 00:14:26.260 --> 00:14:28.180
  • Number one, they went there.
  • 00:14:28.190 --> 00:14:32.190
  • Sometimes you and I can talk about it until
  • 00:14:32.200 --> 00:14:37.110
  • the cows come home.
  • 00:14:37.120 --> 00:14:40.050
  • But until we go there, we're not gonna do it.
  • 00:14:40.060 --> 00:14:46.040
  • They went there.
  • 00:14:46.050 --> 00:14:47.240
  • Number two, they sat down there.
  • 00:14:47.250 --> 00:14:49.270
  • You can also show up to pray and never sit down
  • 00:14:49.280 --> 00:14:55.030
  • and actually do it.
  • 00:14:55.040 --> 00:15:00.280
  • And third, they were blessed there.
  • 00:15:00.290 --> 00:15:04.200
  • I love that passage, what took place here
  • 00:15:04.210 --> 00:15:07.270
  • in verse 13 and following.
  • 00:15:07.280 --> 00:15:09.280
  • It's just a beautiful picture there, running into Lydia,
  • 00:15:09.290 --> 00:15:17.260
  • and what happened, and how she followed Jesus,
  • 00:15:17.270 --> 00:15:22.060
  • and believer's baptism, and how others were affected
  • 00:15:22.070 --> 00:15:25.010
  • by this, were also came to know Christ, what took place.
  • 00:15:25.020 --> 00:15:33.010
  • They were willing, these servants.
  • 00:15:33.020 --> 00:15:35.020
  • They were willing to move on or to stay long.
  • 00:15:35.030 --> 00:15:38.060
  • They were willing to find the right place to pray.
  • 00:15:38.070 --> 00:15:43.100
  • But third, they were willing to encounter opposition.
  • 00:15:43.110 --> 00:15:47.210
  • You know, that's a remarkably complex and difficult kind
  • 00:15:47.220 --> 00:15:52.030
  • of thing to talk about really.
  • 00:15:52.040 --> 00:15:58.030
  • What can you say about opposition?
  • 00:15:58.040 --> 00:16:04.080
  • Do you know it's very possible that there's someone listening
  • 00:16:04.090 --> 00:16:09.160
  • to me right now that is in opposition to the gospel?
  • 00:16:09.170 --> 00:16:19.170
  • Do you know that there are people that walk
  • 00:16:20.250 --> 00:16:23.040
  • the same streets that you do that can even masquerade,
  • 00:16:23.050 --> 00:16:31.140
  • can look like, but they're actually not?
  • 00:16:31.150 --> 00:16:38.280
  • That's what happened here.
  • 00:16:38.290 --> 00:16:42.160
  • There are two things that I think are noteworthy
  • 00:16:42.170 --> 00:16:45.080
  • about what took place with this slave girl,
  • 00:16:45.090 --> 00:16:51.000
  • two things I want to say about this opposition.
  • 00:16:51.010 --> 00:16:54.020
  • This opposition followed them.
  • 00:16:54.030 --> 00:16:57.200
  • It's what verse 17 and the others say:
  • 00:16:57.210 --> 00:17:00.260
  • "She followed Paul and us."
  • 00:17:00.270 --> 00:17:07.250
  • When you serve the Lord, expect opposition to follow you.
  • 00:17:07.260 --> 00:17:15.150
  • It happens.
  • 00:17:15.160 --> 00:17:19.010
  • It'll follow you to your home.
  • 00:17:19.020 --> 00:17:21.190
  • Opposition will follow you into your office.
  • 00:17:21.200 --> 00:17:25.270
  • It'll follow you on that mission trip.
  • 00:17:25.280 --> 00:17:30.010
  • You won't only meet opposition, but opposition
  • 00:17:30.020 --> 00:17:32.070
  • will follow you there.
  • 00:17:32.080 --> 00:17:34.180
  • Opposition will accompany you.
  • 00:17:34.190 --> 00:17:40.150
  • The Bible is very clear about this,
  • 00:17:40.160 --> 00:17:46.200
  • and I'm not preaching a message here on spiritual warfare,
  • 00:17:46.210 --> 00:17:50.150
  • but I want to encourage you today because I know
  • 00:17:50.160 --> 00:17:54.040
  • that some of you are being followed by opposition.
  • 00:17:54.050 --> 00:18:00.250
  • This opposition not only followed them,
  • 00:18:00.260 --> 00:18:03.010
  • but this opposition hounded them.
  • 00:18:03.020 --> 00:18:09.000
  • That's exactly what happened here in this passage.
  • 00:18:09.010 --> 00:18:13.040
  • The Bible tells us clearly, "She followed them, she cried out."
  • 00:18:13.050 --> 00:18:17.000
  • She got into their ear.
  • 00:18:17.010 --> 00:18:19.290
  • She tried to penetrate their brain.
  • 00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.150
  • She made a lot of noise.
  • 00:18:24.160 --> 00:18:28.070
  • She flew her flag.
  • 00:18:28.080 --> 00:18:31.190
  • She irritated, she spoke up, she agitated.
  • 00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:38.080
  • One can come up with so many different things,
  • 00:18:38.090 --> 00:18:42.140
  • but these servants of the Lord, what were they doing?
  • 00:18:42.150 --> 00:18:44.290
  • They were just there to tell people about the love of God,
  • 00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:48.280
  • to tell them that "God loves you.
  • 00:18:48.290 --> 00:18:51.090
  • Jesus died for you."
  • 00:18:51.100 --> 00:18:54.020
  • To speak about the joy of knowing him and of having
  • 00:18:54.030 --> 00:18:57.270
  • your name written in the Lamb's book of life.
  • 00:18:57.280 --> 00:19:02.020
  • Paul was replete with this great,
  • 00:19:02.030 --> 00:19:04.290
  • wonderful message, but it seems to me that as they journeyed
  • 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:12.180
  • that they were willing to encounter opposition.
  • 00:19:12.190 --> 00:19:20.050
  • It's part of being a servant of the Lord.
  • 00:19:20.060 --> 00:19:25.100
  • And I want to encourage you today because I believe that
  • 00:19:25.110 --> 00:19:30.290
  • there are some of you that are carrying an uncommon load
  • 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:40.020
  • of spiritual opposition.
  • 00:19:40.030 --> 00:19:44.160
  • This willing servanthood is, you know,
  • 00:19:44.170 --> 00:19:48.210
  • when you talk about being a servant of the Lord,
  • 00:19:48.220 --> 00:19:52.010
  • it's not just this beautiful little package where you say,
  • 00:19:52.020 --> 00:19:55.030
  • "You know what?
  • 00:19:55.040 --> 00:19:56.270
  • I'll serve the Lord."
  • 00:19:56.280 --> 00:19:58.170
  • And Jesus comes along and wraps you up with a ribbon around
  • 00:19:58.180 --> 00:20:00.130
  • and says, "Well, just have a lovely time."
  • 00:20:00.140 --> 00:20:05.190
  • It's jolly hard work.
  • 00:20:05.200 --> 00:20:10.110
  • "But greater is he that is in you than the one
  • 00:20:10.120 --> 00:20:14.150
  • that's in the world."
  • 00:20:14.160 --> 00:20:16.150
  • So what about these men?
  • 00:20:16.160 --> 00:20:18.200
  • They were willing to move on or to stay long.
  • 00:20:18.210 --> 00:20:21.250
  • They were willing to find the right place to pray.
  • 00:20:21.260 --> 00:20:24.120
  • Look at the blessings God gave to them through Lydia.
  • 00:20:24.130 --> 00:20:27.230
  • Oh, and to boot, by the way, they got invited into a home.
  • 00:20:27.240 --> 00:20:33.080
  • I can only imagine the cup of tea and the scones,
  • 00:20:33.090 --> 00:20:36.190
  • the clotted cream, and the strawberry jam.
  • 00:20:36.200 --> 00:20:39.040
  • I mean, they must have had it there in Greece.
  • 00:20:39.050 --> 00:20:42.250
  • And by the way, this is a beautiful place.
  • 00:20:42.260 --> 00:20:46.270
  • We haven't even--yeah, we've got so much to talk about.
  • 00:20:46.280 --> 00:20:50.210
  • There's Athens down there.
  • 00:20:50.220 --> 00:20:52.210
  • By the way, this peninsula here is just magnificent.
  • 00:20:52.220 --> 00:20:58.030
  • We could talk about that peninsula there, rugged.
  • 00:20:58.040 --> 00:21:01.140
  • This coastline is magnificent.
  • 00:21:01.150 --> 00:21:03.160
  • There's Patmos, the island of Patmos where the book
  • 00:21:03.170 --> 00:21:06.270
  • of Revelation, the vision was given to John later on.
  • 00:21:06.280 --> 00:21:11.050
  • I better not get stuck taking you on another journey here.
  • 00:21:11.060 --> 00:21:15.160
  • I'm convinced, I'm convinced when Lydia said,
  • 00:21:15.170 --> 00:21:18.220
  • "Come on home," she made those boys a jolly good cup of tea,
  • 00:21:18.230 --> 00:21:24.170
  • big old fluffy Greek scones with clotted cream imported
  • 00:21:24.180 --> 00:21:30.220
  • from England with a blob of strawberry jam.
  • 00:21:30.230 --> 00:21:34.180
  • And they just loved it.
  • 00:21:34.190 --> 00:21:36.030
  • They loved it so much, they went back there again.
  • 00:21:36.040 --> 00:21:38.010
  • Did you notice that?
  • 00:21:38.020 --> 00:21:39.150
  • That's why men go back.
  • 00:21:39.160 --> 00:21:42.090
  • They went back.
  • 00:21:42.100 --> 00:21:44.080
  • What about these servants?
  • 00:21:44.090 --> 00:21:47.080
  • They were willing to stand their ground, you know?
  • 00:21:47.090 --> 00:21:51.170
  • They were willing to stand their ground.
  • 00:21:51.180 --> 00:21:53.160
  • When you get into verse 19, these men realized
  • 00:21:53.170 --> 00:21:58.260
  • what had happened, and they didn't capitulate.
  • 00:21:58.270 --> 00:22:02.010
  • They stood firm.
  • 00:22:02.020 --> 00:22:04.190
  • They stood up for the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:22:04.200 --> 00:22:07.110
  • They never altered.
  • 00:22:07.120 --> 00:22:10.110
  • There are several things about their willingness to stand
  • 00:22:10.120 --> 00:22:13.290
  • their ground in the light of this opposition.
  • 00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:17.150
  • Consider what happened.
  • 00:22:17.160 --> 00:22:21.030
  • They were demeaned.
  • 00:22:21.040 --> 00:22:24.020
  • You say, "Well, how were they demeaned?"
  • 00:22:24.030 --> 00:22:25.250
  • Well, verse 22 says that they got the whole community
  • 00:22:25.260 --> 00:22:28.030
  • to come out there and join the slave girl and bemoan the fact
  • 00:22:28.040 --> 00:22:33.090
  • that their industry had been threatened.
  • 00:22:33.100 --> 00:22:36.030
  • I mean, they were demeaned in the public eye.
  • 00:22:36.040 --> 00:22:38.270
  • "Oh, look at these Christians."
  • 00:22:38.280 --> 00:22:42.070
  • They were flogged.
  • 00:22:42.080 --> 00:22:44.090
  • That's a nice how do you do.
  • 00:22:44.100 --> 00:22:46.090
  • Bible says, "They were taken, they were beaten severely,
  • 00:22:46.100 --> 00:22:49.060
  • and ultimately they were imprisoned," thrown into prison.
  • 00:22:49.070 --> 00:22:53.140
  • Just think about that.
  • 00:22:53.150 --> 00:22:55.120
  • But they stood their ground.
  • 00:22:55.130 --> 00:22:57.160
  • They were willing to stand their ground,
  • 00:22:57.170 --> 00:22:59.100
  • but they were willing to be God's servants.
  • 00:22:59.110 --> 00:23:03.160
  • They were willing to be God's servants.
  • 00:23:03.170 --> 00:23:06.290
  • How do we know they were God's servants?
  • 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:09.020
  • Well, they prayed and they sang.
  • 00:23:09.030 --> 00:23:13.060
  • You know, one of the greatest things that we can do is to pray
  • 00:23:13.070 --> 00:23:16.160
  • and to sing hymns and choruses together that worship Jesus.
  • 00:23:16.170 --> 00:23:22.020
  • That's what they did right here in verse 25.
  • 00:23:22.030 --> 00:23:25.100
  • They prayed and sang, but they took it further than that.
  • 00:23:25.110 --> 00:23:28.110
  • They watched and they waited.
  • 00:23:28.120 --> 00:23:30.090
  • I think there was an incredible anticipation that God
  • 00:23:30.100 --> 00:23:35.210
  • was on his throne.
  • 00:23:35.220 --> 00:23:37.290
  • Now, just get this.
  • 00:23:38.000 --> 00:23:39.290
  • This prison was not a little place with a television set
  • 00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:42.130
  • with 53 channels on it.
  • 00:23:42.140 --> 00:23:47.170
  • I don't think they had air conditioning.
  • 00:23:47.180 --> 00:23:50.290
  • I'm not even sure they had any lights.
  • 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:55.250
  • This was a really tough place.
  • 00:23:55.260 --> 00:23:58.170
  • The Bible says they were willing as servants to be
  • 00:23:58.180 --> 00:24:02.030
  • God's servants.
  • 00:24:02.040 --> 00:24:03.290
  • They prayed, they sang, they watched, they waited,
  • 00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:07.290
  • they witnessed, they preached.
  • 00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:10.080
  • I mean, this is the whole deal, and they went back
  • 00:24:10.090 --> 00:24:14.200
  • and encouraged.
  • 00:24:14.210 --> 00:24:16.090
  • They witnessed, they preached, and God moved,
  • 00:24:16.100 --> 00:24:18.210
  • and they were set free by yet another miracle,
  • 00:24:18.220 --> 00:24:22.180
  • and a miracle is something that only God can do.
  • 00:24:22.190 --> 00:24:25.030
  • And having done that, they went back to the people that meant
  • 00:24:25.040 --> 00:24:28.060
  • so much, and everyone was encouraged as a result.
  • 00:24:28.070 --> 00:24:33.080
  • This is like an epic package deal of what it looks like to be
  • 00:24:33.090 --> 00:24:37.020
  • a willing servant of the Lord.
  • 00:24:37.030 --> 00:24:40.080
  • It's what we should pray for.
  • 00:24:40.090 --> 00:24:43.050
  • And, you know, I think life is a great teachers,
  • 00:24:43.060 --> 00:24:45.140
  • don't you think, when we look back in a rearview mirror.
  • 00:24:45.150 --> 00:24:50.220
  • You say, "You know, I could have done a little more of this
  • 00:24:50.230 --> 00:24:53.010
  • and a little less of that."
  • 00:24:53.020 --> 00:24:55.070
  • And as we grow in the grace and knowledge
  • 00:24:55.080 --> 00:24:57.290
  • of the Lord Jesus Christ, God affirms things.
  • 00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:01.080
  • And I want you to be affirmed in your heart as a servant
  • 00:25:01.090 --> 00:25:04.020
  • of the Lord, but I want to ask you this.
  • 00:25:04.030 --> 00:25:06.220
  • Do you know Jesus?
  • 00:25:06.230 --> 00:25:09.060
  • Can't do this without Jesus living in your heart.
  • 00:25:09.070 --> 00:25:12.220
  • Brett Dillard: Indeed, great things are taking place
  • 00:25:15.030 --> 00:25:16.240
  • as God is moving.
  • 00:25:16.250 --> 00:25:18.130
  • If God is moving in your heart, I pray you'd be willing
  • 00:25:18.140 --> 00:25:20.240
  • to share that with someone.
  • 00:25:20.250 --> 00:25:22.130
  • Maybe God has changed your life from the inside out.
  • 00:25:22.140 --> 00:25:24.110
  • Let us be one of those that you let you know.
  • 00:25:24.120 --> 00:25:26.120
  • Give us a call at that 866-899-WORD number.
  • 00:25:26.130 --> 00:25:29.140
  • It will connect you not just right now,
  • 00:25:29.150 --> 00:25:31.030
  • but 24 hours a day with someone who'd love to pray with you.
  • 00:25:31.040 --> 00:25:34.020
  • Matter of fact, right now I wanna pray,
  • 00:25:34.030 --> 00:25:35.210
  • Lord, for those that, right now, understand that
  • 00:25:35.220 --> 00:25:37.190
  • they've been playing, like I did in my own life,
  • 00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:40.130
  • playing church, playing religion.
  • 00:25:40.140 --> 00:25:42.060
  • And now they have come to you, Jesus,
  • 00:25:42.070 --> 00:25:44.040
  • as Savior and Lord.
  • 00:25:44.050 --> 00:25:45.250
  • I pray you would help us to grow closer to you every day,
  • 00:25:45.260 --> 00:25:48.030
  • in Jesus's name I pray, amen.
  • 00:25:48.040 --> 00:25:50.180
  • You know, we have some great resources that'll help you grow
  • 00:25:50.190 --> 00:25:52.190
  • in that walk, maybe help answer some questions about
  • 00:25:52.200 --> 00:25:55.050
  • what God's doing in your own life.
  • 00:25:55.060 --> 00:25:56.280
  • Let us pray with you.
  • 00:25:56.290 --> 00:25:58.080
  • The 866-899-WORD number will connect you with us right now,
  • 00:25:58.090 --> 00:26:02.000
  • and we'd love to talk.
  • 00:26:02.010 --> 00:26:03.100
  • You can also meet us online at TheEncouragingWord.org.
  • 00:26:03.110 --> 00:26:06.180
  • Till next time, take care.
  • 00:26:06.190 --> 00:26:08.190
  • Dr. Wilton: Hello, my friends.
  • 00:26:10.020 --> 00:26:11.190
  • I want to speak to you personally today
  • 00:26:11.200 --> 00:26:14.030
  • from my heart to yours.
  • 00:26:14.040 --> 00:26:16.010
  • I don't think there is ever a better or more important time
  • 00:26:16.020 --> 00:26:20.050
  • for us to respond to our world by standing up
  • 00:26:20.060 --> 00:26:23.270
  • for righteousness.
  • 00:26:23.280 --> 00:26:25.210
  • Now, with this in mind, I would like to invite you
  • 00:26:25.220 --> 00:26:29.030
  • to become an encourager ministry partner.
  • 00:26:29.040 --> 00:26:32.170
  • You see, together, we can impact lives,
  • 00:26:32.180 --> 00:26:36.040
  • both now and for all time and all eternity.
  • 00:26:36.050 --> 00:26:39.260
  • "The Encouraging Word" is
  • 00:26:39.270 --> 00:26:41.220
  • a viewer-and-listener-supported ministry.
  • 00:26:41.230 --> 00:26:44.260
  • And to know that you are standing with me financially
  • 00:26:44.270 --> 00:26:48.140
  • enables me to move forward with confidence to do
  • 00:26:48.150 --> 00:26:52.170
  • the work God has called me to do.
  • 00:26:52.180 --> 00:26:55.030
  • So, please call the number on your screen and just simply say,
  • 00:26:55.040 --> 00:26:58.250
  • "I want to become an encourager."
  • 00:26:58.260 --> 00:27:02.090
  • Thank you so much for helping me.
  • 00:27:02.100 --> 00:27:04.280
  • announcer: It's been a great day with the teaching
  • 00:27:08.260 --> 00:27:10.090
  • of Dr. Don Wilton, but it doesn't have to stop now.
  • 00:27:10.100 --> 00:27:12.060
  • You can stay connected online at TheEncouragingWord.org.
  • 00:27:12.070 --> 00:27:16.110
  • Let's get connected this week.
  • 00:27:16.120 --> 00:27:18.040
  • 00:27:18.050 --> 00:27:28.050
