  • I want to just look at this, and this is a huge subject here.

  • I'm just asking God to allow me to say to you

  • what we need to hear today.

  • And if you think about the children of Israel, and we

  • know their story, there are really kind of four ingredients.

  • The first one is their rescue from the land of bondage and

  • how that God rescued them as a people.

  • Secondly, their encounter with God.

  • I mean, it's just replete, their entire journey

  • is one encounter with God after another.

  • Third, their repeated sin and idolatry.

  • Now, these were the children of God.

  • And right throughout the Scriptures, when you study

  • the children of God, yes, they were rescued,

  • they repeatedly encountered God and then they

  • repeatedly went and sinned against God.

  • And that brought them back to the fourth element

  • of the children of Israel in general terms,

  • and that's the word "redemption."

  • God constantly and continually redeemed them by

  • Now, it's very significant here because when

  • we get to this stage in Exodus chapter 33 if we were to study

  • the preceding chapters, and without going into a whole lot

  • of details, you will just be reminded that Moses went up

  • Mount Sinai and encountered the Lord and the Ten Commandments,

  • and then he came back down the mountain.

  • And what were God's people doing?

  • They had fallen back into sin, into idolatry.

  • And God was not pleased, not one bit.

  • And into the middle of this, something extraordinary happened

  • because God told Moses to put up a little tent.

  • And it was called the meeting tent or the tent of meeting.

  • And by the way, it wasn't like a big circus tent or something,

  • it was a--especially back in their day,

  • it was probably a pretty small tent, you know?

  • But it was a tent, and God told Moses to do that.

  • Now, this is before the tabernacle,

  • which was before the temple.

  • So, you've got four phases here of the meeting place of God.

  • You've got the tent of meeting, which was this little tent

  • And then God moved on and we find the tabernacle.

  • So, Moses goes up the mountain and he leaves the people of God.

  • the golden calf, and they are worshipping the pagan

  • And so, God gave to Moses essentially four instructions.

  • And what I want to do with you today is I want to just briefly

  • a brief application in each one of our lives.

  • But I want you to see what God said to Moses and

  • to the children of Israel in their day and age.

  • But you're going to find that God's going to speak to us.

  • And what I'm doing right now is I'm praying for you

  • Here the four instructions are.

  • First, God made it abundantly clear to Moses and the people

  • that they needed to leave where they were.

  • Chapter 33 and verse 1, for example, "Depart, get up, move."

  • Now remember, predicated upon the fact that God said to Moses,

  • But he predicated what he said to his children on the fact

  • that they would be willing to change their position.

  • So, I'm going to say to you we're not talking

  • God doesn't always do that.

  • Now, in my case, maybe in your case, in many people's case,

  • We moved thousands of miles.

  • And I believe today that we had to do that

  • But where you--what perhaps God was trying to say is you cannot

  • The third thing that God made very clear to Moses

  • and the children of Israel was that they

  • needed to take off their ornaments.

  • You know, when you get into this text, if you go

  • For a single moment I should go up, if you want me

  • to go up among you, I would consume you.

  • So, just for starters, take off the ornaments

  • Now, what was he talking about?

  • The ornaments of their paganism, the ornaments of their idolatry.

  • That's what he told them. Stop looking like the world.

  • There's so many that we can think of,

  • but let me share with you just a few.

  • I think what God is telling me and us to take off, America,

  • is the ornaments of self-righteousness.

  • The ornaments of self-absorption.

  • We're so absorbed in ourselves.

  • At what point are we going to become a group of believers

  • And then of course the big one, you know, he's talking about

  • alter your position and don't carry on associating.

  • Leave the sinfulness of people and the sinful people who are

  • So, leave the--alter your position, leave those people,

  • And there are--there are three all-encompassing statements

  • really made about the tent of meeting.

  • First of all, what he was saying in verse 7 is,

  • Because what God is saying there is that every

  • single one of us are invited to come to the tent of meeting

  • and make our requests known to God.

  • It's a place of petition, "Lord please, would you--"

  • This is a good time to do that. It's something very unique.

  • So, the first is this invitation for all people to come to the

  • tent of meeting to inquire, make petitions of the Lord.

  • Remember in 2 Corinthians, Paul even spoke about this tent,

  • he spoke about the tent of our body.

  • And he said, "Listen, because Christ has come, even though

  • the old tent," in Corinthians talking about the body,

  • which holds together the Spirit of the living God.

  • Going back into the Old Testament, this actual tent,

  • which then became the tabernacle, which then became

  • the temple, which then was translated through the

  • finished work of Christ into the fact that I am the tent of God,

  • There where Moses is meeting, God is doing something.

  • Now, anticipate means have a heart of expectation.

  • So, that's what they did. They just opened their eyes.
