  • 00:00:33.180 --> 00:00:35.270
  • today through the Bible-based preaching of Dr. Don Wilton
  • 00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:39.060
  • and a message, part 2, as a matter of fact,
  • 00:00:39.070 --> 00:00:40.250
  • of a personal testimony.
  • 00:00:40.260 --> 00:00:42.190
  • Dr. Don Wilton: Just going to say this to you
  • 00:00:42.200 --> 00:00:44.170
  • very briefly today.
  • 00:00:44.180 --> 00:00:47.240
  • God takes people, and he uses people like you and me.
  • 00:00:47.250 --> 00:00:57.140
  • I see that in hundreds of lives that I look at today,
  • 00:00:58.130 --> 00:01:04.190
  • people that I know.
  • 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:05.240
  • That I've been so blessed in my own heart and life.
  • 00:01:05.250 --> 00:01:11.040
  • I wanna thank you for the power of your testimony, the way God
  • 00:01:11.050 --> 00:01:16.090
  • has used you, and today in the name of the Lord Jesus I'm
  • 00:01:16.100 --> 00:01:22.000
  • calling us out right there in your business, right there on
  • 00:01:22.010 --> 00:01:29.070
  • your playground, in your home, in your community.
  • 00:01:29.080 --> 00:01:34.250
  • Yes, God does take people like Paul.
  • 00:01:34.260 --> 00:01:38.090
  • He sends them around the world.
  • 00:01:38.100 --> 00:01:40.260
  • The bottom line is that we're obedient to do what God tells us
  • 00:01:40.270 --> 00:01:44.090
  • to do.
  • 00:01:44.100 --> 00:01:45.170
  • Paul set out and went on this incredible--this was his third
  • 00:01:45.180 --> 00:01:48.240
  • journey across the world and while he was right here in
  • 00:01:48.250 --> 00:01:53.230
  • Ephesus God spoke to him, said to him, "Paul, I'm not through
  • 00:01:53.240 --> 00:01:58.200
  • with you yet," in this city here called Ephesus.
  • 00:01:58.210 --> 00:02:02.240
  • In fact, my assignment that I'm giving to you right now is a
  • 00:02:05.020 --> 00:02:09.240
  • very difficult one.
  • 00:02:09.250 --> 00:02:11.140
  • Paul was convinced that God was telling Paul, when he got to
  • 00:02:11.150 --> 00:02:16.050
  • Ephesus, that he was going to send him all the way back to
  • 00:02:16.060 --> 00:02:19.080
  • Jerusalem.
  • 00:02:19.090 --> 00:02:21.090
  • In many ways to the point of origin, but also to the most
  • 00:02:22.230 --> 00:02:27.170
  • difficult place, and Paul was--he knew that if he was to
  • 00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:32.180
  • go back and obey God, that when he got to Jerusalem that he
  • 00:02:32.190 --> 00:02:38.240
  • would face some hardships that he had never faced before.
  • 00:02:38.250 --> 00:02:43.010
  • And we've already encountered many of those hardships, haven't
  • 00:02:43.020 --> 00:02:45.190
  • we?
  • 00:02:45.200 --> 00:02:47.020
  • He talked of imprisonment and flogging and even death, and so
  • 00:02:47.030 --> 00:02:54.120
  • he took one more trip around through Greece, and he came back
  • 00:02:54.130 --> 00:02:59.090
  • through the islands of Assos and Mitylene and Chios and Samos,
  • 00:02:59.100 --> 00:03:04.140
  • and instead of going back to Ephesus he stopped here in
  • 00:03:04.150 --> 00:03:08.070
  • Miletus, this town called Miletus here.
  • 00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:14.130
  • Tell you a couple of things about Miletus.
  • 00:03:14.140 --> 00:03:16.130
  • If you wanna know the distance from Ephesus to Miletus, it's
  • 00:03:16.140 --> 00:03:21.180
  • almost exactly 36 miles, okay?
  • 00:03:21.190 --> 00:03:25.170
  • Thirty-six miles.
  • 00:03:25.180 --> 00:03:26.240
  • That's the distance.
  • 00:03:26.250 --> 00:03:28.180
  • It's important because he invited a whole group of leaders
  • 00:03:28.190 --> 00:03:31.200
  • to make that journey and when he was in Miletus he knew that his
  • 00:03:31.210 --> 00:03:37.040
  • next trip--I mean, just watch with me here.
  • 00:03:37.050 --> 00:03:40.010
  • Here goes his trip.
  • 00:03:40.020 --> 00:03:41.080
  • We're gonna talk about it, and he's gonna stop off in a few
  • 00:03:41.090 --> 00:03:44.100
  • places here, but he's gonna end up in Jerusalem.
  • 00:03:44.110 --> 00:03:47.090
  • And he knows this may be the last time he can say anything,
  • 00:03:47.100 --> 00:03:53.160
  • and so he calls--sends word up here to the leaders, the church
  • 00:03:54.200 --> 00:04:00.130
  • leaders, in Ephesus, and he says, "I need you to come and
  • 00:04:00.140 --> 00:04:04.280
  • visit me."
  • 00:04:04.290 --> 00:04:06.040
  • So, they all get on their donkeys and their horses, they
  • 00:04:06.050 --> 00:04:09.120
  • put on their walking shoes and their Nikes, and they begin to
  • 00:04:09.130 --> 00:04:12.130
  • walk down here to Miletus.
  • 00:04:12.140 --> 00:04:15.030
  • It's 36 miles.
  • 00:04:15.040 --> 00:04:17.200
  • It was like a three-day journey, and they gathered.
  • 00:04:17.210 --> 00:04:20.110
  • Let's read about it again.
  • 00:04:20.120 --> 00:04:24.160
  • I'm in Acts chapter 20 and verse 17.
  • 00:04:24.170 --> 00:04:29.120
  • Acts chapter 20 and verse 17, "Now from Miletus Paul sent to
  • 00:04:29.130 --> 00:04:34.160
  • Ephesus, called the elders of the church to come to him.
  • 00:04:34.170 --> 00:04:37.190
  • And when they came to him, he said to them: 'You yourselves
  • 00:04:37.200 --> 00:04:40.200
  • know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day
  • 00:04:40.210 --> 00:04:46.000
  • that I set foot in Asia, and how that I served the Lord with all
  • 00:04:46.010 --> 00:04:52.010
  • humility and tears and with trials that happened to me
  • 00:04:52.020 --> 00:04:57.050
  • through the plots of the Jews; and yet despite these things how
  • 00:04:57.060 --> 00:05:00.270
  • I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was
  • 00:05:00.280 --> 00:05:06.020
  • profitable, teaching you in public from house to house,
  • 00:05:06.030 --> 00:05:10.180
  • testifying to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of
  • 00:05:10.190 --> 00:05:15.200
  • faith in our Lord Jesus Christ."
  • 00:05:15.210 --> 00:05:18.230
  • And I'm not reading the next sentence.
  • 00:05:18.240 --> 00:05:20.130
  • He says, "And now I'm going to Jerusalem," but I needed to say
  • 00:05:20.140 --> 00:05:24.110
  • this to you.
  • 00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:26.120
  • This is an amazing thing and in our previous study concerning
  • 00:05:28.140 --> 00:05:33.140
  • this powerful testimony Paul began by stating three things
  • 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:42.250
  • that give to us somewhat of a key to understand the power of
  • 00:05:42.260 --> 00:05:47.100
  • his testimony.
  • 00:05:47.110 --> 00:05:48.180
  • First, that he was affirmed by the leaders that knew him, and I
  • 00:05:48.190 --> 00:05:55.030
  • don't want to camp on this again, excepting to say this has
  • 00:05:55.040 --> 00:06:00.110
  • resonated in my own heart.
  • 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:02.120
  • There's no greater, more significant cornerstone of a
  • 00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:11.080
  • personal testimony than when those who know you best are able
  • 00:06:11.090 --> 00:06:16.090
  • to affirm you best.
  • 00:06:21.250 --> 00:06:23.250
  • I use the analogy of parents, and I just want to say again
  • 00:06:26.110 --> 00:06:31.110
  • with all the love in my heart periodically I hear of people my
  • 00:06:34.150 --> 00:06:39.150
  • age who--talking about their parents in their age, say, "You
  • 00:06:42.100 --> 00:06:46.070
  • know, I never heard my daddy tell me that he loved me."
  • 00:06:46.080 --> 00:06:49.060
  • Now, you sitting here listening to me today and you're a father,
  • 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:57.210
  • I hope that's not your case.
  • 00:06:57.220 --> 00:07:03.120
  • You need to stop that.
  • 00:07:03.130 --> 00:07:05.130
  • You are robbing your sons and daughters of an essential, key
  • 00:07:07.080 --> 00:07:13.180
  • component of the development of the power of their testimony.
  • 00:07:13.190 --> 00:07:21.180
  • Don't ever stop doing that and don't listen to people who tell
  • 00:07:25.090 --> 00:07:29.020
  • you, you should never tell other people how much you love and
  • 00:07:29.030 --> 00:07:32.280
  • appreciate them.
  • 00:07:32.290 --> 00:07:36.240
  • Don't buy into that.
  • 00:07:36.250 --> 00:07:38.200
  • It's a lie of the devil.
  • 00:07:38.210 --> 00:07:40.210
  • I've even heard in Christian circles, "Well, you should never
  • 00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:43.190
  • go up to someone and say, 'You know what?
  • 00:07:43.200 --> 00:07:45.020
  • I really--I just affirm you.
  • 00:07:45.030 --> 00:07:48.060
  • Thank God for you.
  • 00:07:48.070 --> 00:07:50.230
  • Man, I've watched you.
  • 00:07:50.240 --> 00:07:51.290
  • You just bless my heart.
  • 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:53.090
  • Thank you for that message you preached.
  • 00:07:53.100 --> 00:07:55.140
  • Thank you for that song you sang.
  • 00:07:55.150 --> 00:07:57.120
  • Thank you for serving at the bridge.
  • 00:07:57.130 --> 00:07:59.260
  • Thank you for blessing other people.
  • 00:07:59.270 --> 00:08:02.080
  • Thank you for being a parent.
  • 00:08:02.090 --> 00:08:04.070
  • Listen, I just love the way you do this.'"
  • 00:08:04.080 --> 00:08:09.110
  • I mean, he began this whole thing with these leaders.
  • 00:08:09.120 --> 00:08:15.000
  • It's what he said.
  • 00:08:15.010 --> 00:08:17.000
  • "You yourselves know."
  • 00:08:17.010 --> 00:08:21.170
  • Secondly, he was faithful over time.
  • 00:08:21.180 --> 00:08:24.010
  • He turned to them, and he said, "Look, my testimony is tested
  • 00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:27.280
  • over time."
  • 00:08:27.290 --> 00:08:29.120
  • Time is an incredible thing, isn't it?
  • 00:08:29.130 --> 00:08:31.290
  • But it's highly significant.
  • 00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:36.070
  • I'm so grateful to the Lord for the many friends and leaders,
  • 00:08:36.080 --> 00:08:42.220
  • wonderful Christian men and women that I know.
  • 00:08:42.230 --> 00:08:46.190
  • You've been like this, seems to me, just all your life.
  • 00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:50.250
  • You just keep on serving the Lord.
  • 00:08:50.260 --> 00:08:54.280
  • Look at Paul.
  • 00:08:54.290 --> 00:08:56.030
  • Paul went through every kind of suffering and pain and
  • 00:08:56.040 --> 00:09:02.210
  • circumstance, and yet he was able to say, "You yourselves
  • 00:09:02.220 --> 00:09:05.150
  • know I've done this. I've kept up with it."
  • 00:09:05.160 --> 00:09:08.200
  • It's jolly hard sometimes.
  • 00:09:08.210 --> 00:09:11.030
  • Maybe today you've got a good reason to not keep up,
  • 00:09:11.040 --> 00:09:17.170
  • to grow weary in well-doing.
  • 00:09:19.030 --> 00:09:22.270
  • I just want to affirm you in your personal testimony.
  • 00:09:22.280 --> 00:09:26.080
  • Just rise up.
  • 00:09:28.130 --> 00:09:30.080
  • Just keep at it.
  • 00:09:30.090 --> 00:09:32.170
  • God will bless you, and he'll use your life to be a blessing
  • 00:09:32.180 --> 00:09:36.270
  • to others sometimes, in many ways, we don't even know.
  • 00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:39.280
  • Number three, he was focused on serving the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:09:39.290 --> 00:09:43.240
  • He made it very clear right there in verse 19, "I serve the
  • 00:09:43.250 --> 00:09:46.270
  • Lord."
  • 00:09:46.280 --> 00:09:47.290
  • That was the issue.
  • 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:51.050
  • The bottom line for Paul was that his life belonged to Jesus.
  • 00:09:51.060 --> 00:09:56.060
  • That's his powerful testimony.
  • 00:09:59.060 --> 00:10:00.230
  • Number four, he was humble in spirit.
  • 00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:06.000
  • You know, that word is right there.
  • 00:10:06.010 --> 00:10:08.100
  • He said, "I serve the Lord with all humility."
  • 00:10:08.110 --> 00:10:12.260
  • I sat at the feet of Dr. Billy Graham for over two decades
  • 00:10:14.020 --> 00:10:21.250
  • and what a privilege we had as a congregation that in the last
  • 00:10:21.260 --> 00:10:27.140
  • ten years of his life he was a member of our church.
  • 00:10:27.150 --> 00:10:32.130
  • People all over the world have asked that question, "How do you
  • 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:39.140
  • explain Dr. Graham?"
  • 00:10:39.150 --> 00:10:44.020
  • God resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
  • 00:10:44.030 --> 00:10:48.100
  • You can never fully comprehend.
  • 00:10:55.280 --> 00:11:00.080
  • I couldn't, and I'm a person who had an extraordinarily close,
  • 00:11:00.090 --> 00:11:06.150
  • personal--I sat with him personally, privately hundreds
  • 00:11:06.160 --> 00:11:14.280
  • of times, ate with him, walked with him, prepared messages with
  • 00:11:14.290 --> 00:11:23.120
  • him, talked to him on the phone, met important people with him,
  • 00:11:23.130 --> 00:11:32.060
  • and it's something you can't really describe, excepting by
  • 00:11:34.180 --> 00:11:42.080
  • the Spirit of God.
  • 00:11:42.090 --> 00:11:43.260
  • That a man so great--the phone that rang with us came from
  • 00:11:43.270 --> 00:11:51.090
  • prime ministers and presidents and the single most famous
  • 00:11:51.100 --> 00:11:56.270
  • people in the world, from athletes and artists and stars
  • 00:11:56.280 --> 00:12:01.110
  • around the world, but he was so humble.
  • 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:05.130
  • It was never him, never, never.
  • 00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:12.050
  • I bear testimony to that.
  • 00:12:12.060 --> 00:12:14.100
  • I'm one of the elders that was called from Ephesus to whom he
  • 00:12:14.110 --> 00:12:17.240
  • said, "You yourself know." I know.
  • 00:12:17.250 --> 00:12:24.280
  • This is what Paul was saying.
  • 00:12:26.220 --> 00:12:29.030
  • It's incomprehensible.
  • 00:12:29.040 --> 00:12:32.110
  • It's humanly impossible.
  • 00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:36.230
  • Humble in spirit.
  • 00:12:36.240 --> 00:12:38.120
  • In its adjectival sense that little word "humble" there is
  • 00:12:38.130 --> 00:12:44.140
  • something--it means to be meek in its adjectival.
  • 00:12:44.150 --> 00:12:49.060
  • If you're going to describe someone who's humble you're
  • 00:12:49.070 --> 00:12:51.210
  • saying that person is meek.
  • 00:12:51.220 --> 00:12:53.030
  • Here is a beautiful aspect of humility.
  • 00:12:53.040 --> 00:12:58.100
  • In its adjectival sense if you say someone is humble, you're
  • 00:12:58.110 --> 00:13:01.230
  • saying they are respectful of everybody else.
  • 00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:07.080
  • They are respectful of everybody else.
  • 00:13:07.090 --> 00:13:11.240
  • That's a essential quality.
  • 00:13:11.250 --> 00:13:15.190
  • The word "submission."
  • 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:17.020
  • It's self-effacing.
  • 00:13:17.030 --> 00:13:19.100
  • It's unassertive.
  • 00:13:19.110 --> 00:13:22.250
  • It's unpresuming.
  • 00:13:22.260 --> 00:13:25.170
  • In its verbal form the word "humility," to be humble, to be
  • 00:13:25.180 --> 00:13:31.250
  • humble in the verbal form, you're describing the act,
  • 00:13:31.260 --> 00:13:36.120
  • action of the word with somebody, like Paul
  • 00:13:36.130 --> 00:13:39.150
  • is saying here.
  • 00:13:39.160 --> 00:13:41.090
  • It literally means that Paul was lower in dignity.
  • 00:13:41.100 --> 00:13:46.130
  • He was lower in importance than anybody else, so coming back to
  • 00:13:46.140 --> 00:13:52.070
  • Dr. Billy Graham would you understand if I told you there
  • 00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:57.260
  • was hardly ever a time that I was with Dr. Billy Graham that
  • 00:13:57.270 --> 00:14:04.080
  • if you were there you would have thought that I was actually the
  • 00:14:04.090 --> 00:14:10.140
  • important person?
  • 00:14:10.150 --> 00:14:13.040
  • Do you realize how silly this is?
  • 00:14:13.050 --> 00:14:19.060
  • And the times that I was with him, that very powerful people
  • 00:14:20.190 --> 00:14:26.190
  • walked in and were there with us, and to that person
  • 00:14:26.200 --> 00:14:34.190
  • who didn't know me, Don Wilton,
  • 00:14:34.200 --> 00:14:43.110
  • they were like, "Who is this
  • 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:48.260
  • incredibly important person with Dr. Billy Graham and I don't
  • 00:14:48.270 --> 00:14:53.040
  • even know his name?"
  • 00:14:53.050 --> 00:14:57.010
  • It's the right upwardness of the backwardness of God's order,
  • 00:14:59.150 --> 00:15:08.100
  • and then he goes on.
  • 00:15:09.010 --> 00:15:10.200
  • Number five, he was compassionate.
  • 00:15:10.210 --> 00:15:13.000
  • That little word there "tears" can also be rendered the word
  • 00:15:13.010 --> 00:15:16.010
  • "compassion."
  • 00:15:16.020 --> 00:15:17.030
  • This is his powerful testimony.
  • 00:15:17.040 --> 00:15:18.290
  • He was compassion and the word "compassionate" there really
  • 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:23.180
  • derives its root from having an overriding sympathy or concern
  • 00:15:23.190 --> 00:15:28.190
  • with the suffering and the misfortune of others.
  • 00:15:31.040 --> 00:15:35.290
  • You know, we talk many times about walking in someone else's
  • 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:39.160
  • shoes.
  • 00:15:39.170 --> 00:15:41.200
  • That's the word that he's using here.
  • 00:15:41.210 --> 00:15:44.270
  • He turns to the Ephesian elders, and he says to them, "You know
  • 00:15:44.280 --> 00:15:49.130
  • that as I serve the Lord I served with humility, and I
  • 00:15:49.140 --> 00:15:53.270
  • served with compassion.
  • 00:15:53.280 --> 00:15:55.150
  • I did everything I could to walk in other people's shoes, which
  • 00:15:55.160 --> 00:16:00.180
  • is not always easy to do."
  • 00:16:04.120 --> 00:16:06.020
  • We battle with these things in our lives.
  • 00:16:06.030 --> 00:16:11.200
  • This is the power of Christ working in him.
  • 00:16:11.210 --> 00:16:18.040
  • Number six, he was strengthened through trials.
  • 00:16:18.050 --> 00:16:21.270
  • He unequivocably says, "You know that I went through a lot of
  • 00:16:21.280 --> 00:16:28.050
  • trials," and he was strengthened by it, which is God's economy.
  • 00:16:28.060 --> 00:16:34.200
  • It's God's way of doing thing.
  • 00:16:34.210 --> 00:16:36.100
  • It's a spiritual irony in many ways.
  • 00:16:36.110 --> 00:16:40.060
  • It always amazes me the number of times I'm around people like
  • 00:16:42.100 --> 00:16:47.000
  • yourselves, and I watch you, and you teach someone like me so
  • 00:16:47.010 --> 00:16:52.030
  • much.
  • 00:16:52.040 --> 00:16:54.110
  • I've watched some of you really suffer,
  • 00:16:54.120 --> 00:17:00.120
  • but you've got such strength in that.
  • 00:17:00.130 --> 00:17:04.070
  • It seems to me, more often than not, you go and visit someone in
  • 00:17:07.060 --> 00:17:14.260
  • hospital or you talk to someone on the telephone, and you see
  • 00:17:14.270 --> 00:17:18.280
  • brothers and sisters going through pain, deep waters, the
  • 00:17:18.290 --> 00:17:27.070
  • difficulties of broken marriages and broken hearts and hurting
  • 00:17:27.080 --> 00:17:32.190
  • hearts and all of these things that take place, and yet
  • 00:17:32.200 --> 00:17:35.200
  • there is such strength that comes back from you.
  • 00:17:35.210 --> 00:17:42.080
  • It's like how can you be so strong in the midst of what
  • 00:17:42.090 --> 00:17:48.010
  • you're going through?
  • 00:17:48.020 --> 00:17:49.250
  • That's what--this is his testimony.
  • 00:17:49.260 --> 00:17:52.120
  • This is what God does.
  • 00:17:52.130 --> 00:17:55.240
  • He goes further there.
  • 00:17:55.250 --> 00:17:57.200
  • In the seventh instance he says part of his powerful testimony
  • 00:17:57.210 --> 00:18:02.070
  • is that he was determined despite the opposition that
  • 00:18:02.080 --> 00:18:07.010
  • he faced.
  • 00:18:07.020 --> 00:18:08.070
  • You know, if you get into verse 19 and 20, in verse 19 lemme
  • 00:18:08.080 --> 00:18:12.190
  • read it to you like the Greek text has it, just a couple of
  • 00:18:12.200 --> 00:18:17.040
  • words here.
  • 00:18:17.050 --> 00:18:18.110
  • This is what he says, "I served the Lord with all humility and
  • 00:18:18.120 --> 00:18:22.050
  • with compassion and despite the trials that happened to me
  • 00:18:22.060 --> 00:18:29.290
  • through the plots of the Jews I still did not shrink
  • 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:38.000
  • from standing firm and being the man of God,
  • 00:18:38.010 --> 00:18:44.250
  • God has called me to be."
  • 00:18:44.260 --> 00:18:47.220
  • He was determined.
  • 00:18:47.230 --> 00:18:49.230
  • We all suffer setbacks.
  • 00:18:53.120 --> 00:18:55.130
  • We all face obstacles when it comes to our Christian faith.
  • 00:18:58.050 --> 00:19:04.130
  • Don't shrink back because of them.
  • 00:19:04.140 --> 00:19:06.140
  • Number eight, he was public in his teaching.
  • 00:19:11.020 --> 00:19:14.080
  • It's part of his testimony.
  • 00:19:14.090 --> 00:19:17.060
  • He tells us right there in verse 20.
  • 00:19:17.070 --> 00:19:20.250
  • He said that "I not only did not shrink back, I didn't give up.
  • 00:19:20.260 --> 00:19:27.090
  • In fact, I remained steadfast.
  • 00:19:27.100 --> 00:19:29.290
  • I kept on keeping on."
  • 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.040
  • And he said, "What I did, I didn't do in private behind
  • 00:19:34.220 --> 00:19:39.040
  • closed doors. I was very public about this."
  • 00:19:39.050 --> 00:19:46.250
  • I think we have to be very careful sometimes and especially
  • 00:19:46.260 --> 00:19:51.220
  • in our beautiful land, don't we?
  • 00:19:51.230 --> 00:19:54.130
  • Always remember this.
  • 00:19:54.140 --> 00:19:55.190
  • Your salvation is very private,
  • 00:19:55.200 --> 00:20:01.190
  • because it's between you and God.
  • 00:20:03.250 --> 00:20:06.060
  • Only God can save you, but your Christianity is totally public.
  • 00:20:06.070 --> 00:20:14.010
  • Your salvation is private.
  • 00:20:14.020 --> 00:20:17.030
  • I can't save you.
  • 00:20:17.040 --> 00:20:18.070
  • Nobody else can.
  • 00:20:18.080 --> 00:20:20.010
  • We can show you how to give your life to Christ.
  • 00:20:20.020 --> 00:20:22.170
  • You gotta do business with God personally.
  • 00:20:22.180 --> 00:20:25.250
  • He loves you personally, individually, but your
  • 00:20:25.260 --> 00:20:29.120
  • Christianity, being a Christian, is very public.
  • 00:20:29.130 --> 00:20:34.040
  • Jesus put it like this.
  • 00:20:34.050 --> 00:20:37.250
  • He said let your light so shine before other people, that others
  • 00:20:37.260 --> 00:20:46.050
  • would see your good works, and as a consequence they would
  • 00:20:46.060 --> 00:20:51.150
  • glorify the Father which is in heaven.
  • 00:20:51.160 --> 00:20:55.240
  • You don't light a lamp and then put something over the top of it
  • 00:20:55.250 --> 00:20:59.130
  • and what Paul was saying here is just very simply he said,
  • 00:21:05.240 --> 00:21:08.220
  • "Listen, I did this publicly."
  • 00:21:08.230 --> 00:21:12.090
  • I don't know if you've met people.
  • 00:21:12.100 --> 00:21:13.280
  • I have from time to time.
  • 00:21:13.290 --> 00:21:15.130
  • I've met people who've said, "You know something?
  • 00:21:15.140 --> 00:21:18.270
  • You gotta understand I'm a very public person, so I keep my
  • 00:21:18.280 --> 00:21:24.100
  • Christianity to myself."
  • 00:21:24.110 --> 00:21:26.280
  • Did you hear that?
  • 00:21:26.290 --> 00:21:28.290
  • Now, one at the same time we have to act with wisdom, don't
  • 00:21:33.020 --> 00:21:36.190
  • we?
  • 00:21:36.200 --> 00:21:38.200
  • Paul was not suggesting that you arrive on your--at your office
  • 00:21:43.240 --> 00:21:48.130
  • on Monday morning brandishing ten Bibles and walk in there
  • 00:21:48.140 --> 00:21:54.110
  • shouting the "Hallelujah" chorus and quoting John 3:16 at the top
  • 00:21:54.120 --> 00:21:58.180
  • of your voice.
  • 00:21:58.190 --> 00:22:00.220
  • See, people always go to extremes.
  • 00:22:00.230 --> 00:22:03.080
  • People will take things, they go way overboard.
  • 00:22:08.200 --> 00:22:11.060
  • You need--you and I need wisdom in the marketplace.
  • 00:22:14.260 --> 00:22:18.050
  • We need wisdom on that college campus.
  • 00:22:18.060 --> 00:22:21.120
  • I need wisdom.
  • 00:22:21.130 --> 00:22:23.130
  • I need wisdom everywhere I go.
  • 00:22:25.220 --> 00:22:27.250
  • God will give you that because his Spirit does that, but your
  • 00:22:30.290 --> 00:22:37.270
  • Christianity cannot be private.
  • 00:22:37.280 --> 00:22:42.000
  • It's not a Sunday-morning thing.
  • 00:22:42.010 --> 00:22:44.010
  • It's an everyday, every-moment experience that you have with
  • 00:22:46.120 --> 00:22:50.200
  • Christ. Let your light so shine.
  • 00:22:50.210 --> 00:22:53.290
  • Number nine, he was impartial in his witness.
  • 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:57.230
  • I love this. He was impartial in his witness.
  • 00:22:57.240 --> 00:23:00.190
  • He said, "I was the same whether to Greeks, to Jews, or to
  • 00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:05.240
  • Gentiles."
  • 00:23:05.250 --> 00:23:11.070
  • Paul had no color in his eyes when he loved people.
  • 00:23:11.080 --> 00:23:17.180
  • He wasn't partial to rich and poor.
  • 00:23:19.040 --> 00:23:26.090
  • Paul was the same person.
  • 00:23:26.100 --> 00:23:28.110
  • He loved all people equally because he saw them through the
  • 00:23:28.120 --> 00:23:31.260
  • eyes of a loving God.
  • 00:23:31.270 --> 00:23:35.120
  • When Jesus went to the cross, he leveled the playing field.
  • 00:23:35.130 --> 00:23:40.050
  • He removed all boundaries.
  • 00:23:40.060 --> 00:23:42.060
  • And then, finally in this powerful testimony, he was
  • 00:23:44.070 --> 00:23:48.250
  • truthful in his message and that's so powerful when he says
  • 00:23:48.260 --> 00:23:53.040
  • this.
  • 00:23:53.050 --> 00:23:54.110
  • Before we get on to the next section of what took place in
  • 00:23:54.120 --> 00:23:57.120
  • Miletus, listen to what this--what he said here.
  • 00:23:57.130 --> 00:23:59.180
  • He said, "I testified to both Jews and Greeks repentance
  • 00:23:59.190 --> 00:24:04.120
  • toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."
  • 00:24:04.130 --> 00:24:08.110
  • Now, why did he do that?
  • 00:24:08.120 --> 00:24:10.190
  • Why did he focus on repenting toward God and putting your
  • 00:24:10.200 --> 00:24:14.120
  • faith in Jesus?
  • 00:24:14.130 --> 00:24:15.170
  • Because he knew that it is only God in and through the Lord
  • 00:24:15.180 --> 00:24:21.250
  • Jesus Christ that can give you forgiveness of sin, that can
  • 00:24:21.260 --> 00:24:26.020
  • give you peace in your heart, that can write your name in
  • 00:24:26.030 --> 00:24:29.210
  • God's book in heaven.
  • 00:24:29.220 --> 00:24:30.240
  • It's the only means by which you can go to heaven.
  • 00:24:30.250 --> 00:24:34.040
  • That's what he does for us.
  • 00:24:34.050 --> 00:24:36.100
  • You know, Paul gathered these people together, and he said,
  • 00:24:36.110 --> 00:24:42.140
  • "I've got something I want to share with you before I go and
  • 00:24:42.150 --> 00:24:45.200
  • give my life to Jesus," and he culminated with the single most
  • 00:24:45.210 --> 00:24:51.210
  • important thing.
  • 00:24:51.220 --> 00:24:54.140
  • He said, "Here it is: that you repent toward God, and you place
  • 00:24:54.150 --> 00:25:00.230
  • your faith in Jesus."
  • 00:25:00.240 --> 00:25:04.010
  • Britt: Wow!
  • 00:25:07.170 --> 00:25:08.210
  • Talk about keeping it simple and direct to the point.
  • 00:25:08.220 --> 00:25:10.220
  • You gotta give your heart to Jesus.
  • 00:25:10.230 --> 00:25:12.200
  • That's what matters more than anything else, not joining our
  • 00:25:12.210 --> 00:25:14.170
  • church, though we'd love to have you join our church.
  • 00:25:14.180 --> 00:25:16.100
  • Not being a part of our ministry.
  • 00:25:16.110 --> 00:25:18.080
  • Whether you're around the world or around the block, that's
  • 00:25:18.090 --> 00:25:20.210
  • wonderful, but give your heart to Jesus.
  • 00:25:20.220 --> 00:25:23.230
  • You can do that right now by a simple prayer.
  • 00:25:23.240 --> 00:25:25.210
  • Matter of fact, I can lead you.
  • 00:25:25.220 --> 00:25:27.050
  • You can repeat right after me, "Lord God, I know that
  • 00:25:27.060 --> 00:25:29.220
  • I'm a sinner.
  • 00:25:29.230 --> 00:25:30.290
  • I know that my sin has separated me from you, but, Jesus, I
  • 00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:33.250
  • believe.
  • 00:25:33.260 --> 00:25:35.030
  • I confess with my mouth that you are the Son of God, and you died
