  • male announcer: Welcome to The Encouraging Word.
  • 00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:36.030
  • God has an encouraging Word for you and me today
  • 00:00:36.040 --> 00:00:38.200
  • through the Bible-based preaching of Dr. Don Wilton
  • 00:00:38.210 --> 00:00:41.000
  • about The People of Ephesus.
  • 00:00:41.010 --> 00:00:42.270
  • Dr. Don Wilton: Watch what I'm about to say to you as we
  • 00:00:44.030 --> 00:00:47.060
  • journey with Paul on--we're about to begin his third
  • 00:00:47.070 --> 00:00:53.210
  • missionary journey, that's what I'm focusing on is this
  • 00:00:53.220 --> 00:01:01.000
  • incredible man that God used as he went from town to town, from
  • 00:01:01.010 --> 00:01:05.010
  • city to city because God told him to do that,
  • 00:01:05.020 --> 00:01:09.050
  • and what a difference he made.
  • 00:01:09.060 --> 00:01:11.110
  • And it's amazing as we study this.
  • 00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:14.230
  • Each city presents a unique circumstance, just a unique
  • 00:01:14.240 --> 00:01:22.070
  • circumstance.
  • 00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:24.040
  • And today, I've entitled my message--I mean, is this not
  • 00:01:24.050 --> 00:01:29.090
  • brilliant; this is the most brilliant title you've ever
  • 00:01:29.100 --> 00:01:32.030
  • heard - "The People of Ephesus."
  • 00:01:32.040 --> 00:01:36.200
  • I mean, I came up with that all by myself, "The People of
  • 00:01:36.210 --> 00:01:40.230
  • Ephesus."
  • 00:01:40.240 --> 00:01:42.200
  • Listen, don't you just love your own city, your town?
  • 00:01:42.210 --> 00:01:48.120
  • You know everywhere I go I meet--and I'll say,
  • 00:01:48.130 --> 00:01:50.140
  • "Where you from?"
  • 00:01:50.150 --> 00:01:52.030
  • "Well, you know, I grew up in such and such a town, in such
  • 00:01:52.040 --> 00:01:57.060
  • and such a state, and that's where I'm from."
  • 00:01:57.070 --> 00:02:02.050
  • Or people will describe where they're from.
  • 00:02:02.060 --> 00:02:04.190
  • The place you're from actually is very important.
  • 00:02:04.200 --> 00:02:10.270
  • And you know towns and cities, like churches, are all unique.
  • 00:02:10.280 --> 00:02:19.180
  • You know one town, one city is not necessarily the same as the
  • 00:02:19.190 --> 00:02:25.130
  • next one.
  • 00:02:25.140 --> 00:02:27.210
  • I tried to teach young preachers and pastors, just understand one
  • 00:02:27.220 --> 00:02:35.040
  • thing, no congregation is the same; every congregation has a
  • 00:02:35.050 --> 00:02:40.280
  • character.
  • 00:02:40.290 --> 00:02:43.130
  • And you know as a pastor, as a pastor, it's very important for
  • 00:02:43.140 --> 00:02:49.220
  • me and for us as leaders to understand the vibe of our
  • 00:02:49.230 --> 00:02:54.290
  • congregation.
  • 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:58.020
  • Go and talk to our educators; every class is different, and
  • 00:02:58.030 --> 00:03:06.160
  • it's made up of people.
  • 00:03:06.170 --> 00:03:10.190
  • It's not like, well, we're just going to do this in the same
  • 00:03:10.200 --> 00:03:13.070
  • way.
  • 00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:14.170
  • You tap into, if I may use the word, the personality of the
  • 00:03:14.180 --> 00:03:20.000
  • people who reside there.
  • 00:03:20.010 --> 00:03:24.180
  • And you don't change the message.
  • 00:03:24.190 --> 00:03:27.100
  • This gospel cannot change.
  • 00:03:27.110 --> 00:03:33.050
  • But you make the application of that gospel in accordance with
  • 00:03:33.060 --> 00:03:37.110
  • the personality, the character.
  • 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:40.150
  • All of us who are parents, you deal with your children coming
  • 00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:43.210
  • from the same mom and dad, but you deal with each one of them
  • 00:03:43.220 --> 00:03:48.160
  • in accord with the people that they are.
  • 00:03:48.170 --> 00:03:53.230
  • I wish I could tell you that we treated--we love them the same,
  • 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:59.250
  • equally, but we approach them, we treated them, even
  • 00:03:59.260 --> 00:04:05.010
  • disciplined them differently.
  • 00:04:05.020 --> 00:04:10.010
  • My two sons, who are not grown with their own families,
  • 00:04:10.020 --> 00:04:15.030
  • they're only 18 months apart.
  • 00:04:15.040 --> 00:04:18.140
  • And they're like this, Rob and Greg, they're the best friends
  • 00:04:18.150 --> 00:04:22.000
  • in the world.
  • 00:04:22.010 --> 00:04:23.100
  • They were almost like twins in some way,
  • 00:04:23.110 --> 00:04:26.170
  • but they're 18 months apart.
  • 00:04:26.180 --> 00:04:28.070
  • But I'm telling you they--both of them are incredible
  • 00:04:28.080 --> 00:04:31.160
  • preachers, ministers of the gospel today, but they are
  • 00:04:31.170 --> 00:04:35.030
  • different personalities.
  • 00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:37.150
  • You with me on that?
  • 00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:39.270
  • When my two sons were growing up, I could just say something
  • 00:04:39.280 --> 00:04:45.040
  • to Rob, my oldest son, "Son, you don't do that.
  • 00:04:45.050 --> 00:04:48.100
  • That's jolly naughty of you."
  • 00:04:48.110 --> 00:04:50.290
  • And it would be like I'd punished him in the worst
  • 00:04:51.000 --> 00:04:53.270
  • possible way.
  • 00:04:53.280 --> 00:04:56.120
  • I mean it was like everything.
  • 00:04:56.130 --> 00:04:58.220
  • Now Greg, I'd say to him, "Son, you just are naughty.
  • 00:04:58.230 --> 00:05:04.200
  • You don't--I'm just going to tell you, you do that again."
  • 00:05:04.210 --> 00:05:07.240
  • And he'd stand there and look at me and say, "What's that in your
  • 00:05:07.250 --> 00:05:10.080
  • nose, daddy?"
  • 00:05:10.090 --> 00:05:14.250
  • It's like he never heard a thing.
  • 00:05:14.260 --> 00:05:18.190
  • I had to literally send Greg to Cyprus and ban him to an island
  • 00:05:18.200 --> 00:05:24.140
  • in the Mediterranean for six weeks just to get his attention.
  • 00:05:24.150 --> 00:05:31.100
  • Now I'm not going to go to my daughter now, because she had me
  • 00:05:31.110 --> 00:05:34.000
  • wrapped around her finger.
  • 00:05:34.010 --> 00:05:35.200
  • Daddy's and daughters are entirely--she was allowed to do
  • 00:05:35.210 --> 00:05:39.090
  • anything she wanted, and her brothers still remind me.
  • 00:05:39.100 --> 00:05:44.010
  • So here's Ephesus.
  • 00:05:44.020 --> 00:05:45.280
  • I want you to just take a look here.
  • 00:05:45.290 --> 00:05:48.240
  • So in the last stage of his second journey, which we didn't
  • 00:05:48.250 --> 00:05:55.120
  • deal a lot with, he actually stopped in Ephesus, okay.
  • 00:05:55.130 --> 00:06:00.240
  • This is the last stage here.
  • 00:06:00.250 --> 00:06:03.230
  • Now he's coming back to Ephesus.
  • 00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:10.210
  • He's coming back there.
  • 00:06:10.220 --> 00:06:12.010
  • He's now about to spend some serious time, and I'm going to
  • 00:06:12.020 --> 00:06:14.150
  • be unpacking this over the next two weeks.
  • 00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:20.090
  • And this place here called Ephesus, right there, is a very
  • 00:06:20.100 --> 00:06:25.130
  • interesting place.
  • 00:06:25.140 --> 00:06:28.090
  • Probably--let me tell you a couple of things about it.
  • 00:06:28.100 --> 00:06:32.200
  • First of all, very prominent in the Bible, isn't it?
  • 00:06:32.210 --> 00:06:36.200
  • You know Paul wrote his letter to these people, it's called
  • 00:06:36.210 --> 00:06:40.150
  • Ephesians; the letter to Ephesians, the Ephesian people.
  • 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:45.160
  • What else would you think about with Ephesus?
  • 00:06:45.170 --> 00:06:48.020
  • Do you know in the book of Revelation chapter 2, verse 1,
  • 00:06:48.030 --> 00:06:51.290
  • it's the first of the seven churches, in the seven churches
  • 00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:56.280
  • of Asia Minor?
  • 00:06:56.290 --> 00:06:58.140
  • The church at Ephesus became the leading church,
  • 00:06:58.150 --> 00:07:02.180
  • Christian church.
  • 00:07:02.190 --> 00:07:05.080
  • It was very strategic.
  • 00:07:05.090 --> 00:07:07.100
  • You can see it.
  • 00:07:07.110 --> 00:07:08.200
  • Here's the Aegean Sea, right.
  • 00:07:08.210 --> 00:07:11.180
  • It's a beautiful sea with all these islands here.
  • 00:07:11.190 --> 00:07:14.260
  • And Ephesus was right on the edge of the Aegean Sea.
  • 00:07:14.270 --> 00:07:19.270
  • It was situated between Smyrna on the north coast--north of it,
  • 00:07:19.280 --> 00:07:25.190
  • and Miletus on the southern coast which are very strategic.
  • 00:07:25.200 --> 00:07:31.130
  • And during the time of the Romans, Ephesus essentially was
  • 00:07:31.140 --> 00:07:35.080
  • a Greek colony.
  • 00:07:35.090 --> 00:07:38.100
  • Very important you hear that.
  • 00:07:38.110 --> 00:07:39.220
  • It was a Greek colony.
  • 00:07:39.230 --> 00:07:42.180
  • So it brought into the streets of Ephesus an incredibly strong
  • 00:07:42.190 --> 00:07:49.160
  • Roman influence.
  • 00:07:49.170 --> 00:07:51.190
  • In fact, Augustus Caesar, who was a very prominent Caesar, one
  • 00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:56.220
  • that we know of most of all, Augustus Caesar introduced a
  • 00:07:56.230 --> 00:08:02.070
  • whole series of reforms that impacted and were carried out in
  • 00:08:02.080 --> 00:08:07.260
  • Ephesus through the Romans that were occupying, and turned
  • 00:08:07.270 --> 00:08:12.080
  • Ephesus into a very prosperous city.
  • 00:08:12.090 --> 00:08:17.010
  • They even had a port there.
  • 00:08:17.020 --> 00:08:19.110
  • Now, when you go to Ephesus today, the port now sits like
  • 00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:23.030
  • six miles inland because things have dried up and the topography
  • 00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:28.130
  • has changed somewhat and the movements and some of the
  • 00:08:28.140 --> 00:08:32.060
  • earthquakes have altered the location of the port.
  • 00:08:32.070 --> 00:08:35.110
  • So it sits like six miles inland.
  • 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:38.020
  • But it's very strategic.
  • 00:08:38.030 --> 00:08:39.240
  • Some of the most famous people we ever know.
  • 00:08:39.250 --> 00:08:42.240
  • Have you ever wondered what happened after Jesus on the
  • 00:08:42.250 --> 00:08:47.040
  • cross looked at John and said to him, "John, behold your mother,
  • 00:08:47.050 --> 00:08:54.100
  • Mary"?
  • 00:08:54.110 --> 00:08:57.090
  • Remember when Jesus said that to John?
  • 00:08:57.100 --> 00:08:59.010
  • "John, behold."
  • 00:08:59.020 --> 00:09:00.210
  • "John, I'm about to die.
  • 00:09:00.220 --> 00:09:03.140
  • You are my brother and there is your mother.
  • 00:09:03.150 --> 00:09:05.210
  • Take care of your mother."
  • 00:09:05.220 --> 00:09:07.290
  • So what did John do with his mother?
  • 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:10.230
  • He took her to Ephesus.
  • 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:14.030
  • And her grave--Mary, the mother of Jesus, died in Ephesus.
  • 00:09:14.040 --> 00:09:22.010
  • John himself, we know, had the experience on the island
  • 00:09:22.020 --> 00:09:27.000
  • of Patmos.
  • 00:09:27.010 --> 00:09:28.230
  • This is where he received the revelation, the book of
  • 00:09:28.240 --> 00:09:32.080
  • Revelation: on the island of Patmos.
  • 00:09:32.090 --> 00:09:38.080
  • I want you to see how close Patmos is to Ephesus.
  • 00:09:38.090 --> 00:09:47.060
  • This was in John's backyard.
  • 00:09:47.070 --> 00:09:50.010
  • And John ended up writing a lot of the book of Revelation
  • 00:09:50.020 --> 00:09:59.010
  • in Ephesus.
  • 00:09:59.020 --> 00:10:01.230
  • We don't--the manuscripts--if you would just give me five
  • 00:10:01.240 --> 00:10:06.140
  • hours every Sunday I could explain some of this to you
  • 00:10:06.150 --> 00:10:13.100
  • because you've got to go back into the early manuscripts, many
  • 00:10:13.110 --> 00:10:16.100
  • of which I've had the privilege of studying because I did Greek
  • 00:10:16.110 --> 00:10:22.060
  • New Testament at an advanced level and many of you have not
  • 00:10:22.070 --> 00:10:26.120
  • had that opportunity.
  • 00:10:26.130 --> 00:10:28.250
  • So in textual criticism of the Greek New Testament, which is
  • 00:10:28.260 --> 00:10:35.100
  • also one of my majors, Textual Criticism of the Greek New
  • 00:10:35.110 --> 00:10:39.170
  • Testament, you go back into the original documents, this is how
  • 00:10:39.180 --> 00:10:43.180
  • you connect all these little pieces together so to speak.
  • 00:10:43.190 --> 00:10:50.210
  • And so right here you not only have Paul, we're going to talk
  • 00:10:50.220 --> 00:10:55.220
  • about Paul a lot.
  • 00:10:55.230 --> 00:10:57.140
  • You've got the influence of John; the influence of the
  • 00:10:57.150 --> 00:10:59.260
  • Doctrine of Last Things; you've got the death of Mary, the
  • 00:10:59.270 --> 00:11:04.010
  • mother of Jesus; you've got this incredible port city, and this
  • 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:09.090
  • place became quite a cosmopolitan meeting place
  • 00:11:09.100 --> 00:11:15.000
  • of culture.
  • 00:11:15.010 --> 00:11:16.140
  • So it became highly cultural.
  • 00:11:16.150 --> 00:11:19.160
  • You were somebody if you came from Ephesus
  • 00:11:19.170 --> 00:11:22.260
  • back in the day, right.
  • 00:11:22.270 --> 00:11:26.050
  • And it was a good place to live, a good place to be.
  • 00:11:26.060 --> 00:11:31.220
  • And it was a valued place, it was highly thought out place.
  • 00:11:31.230 --> 00:11:37.050
  • So when you go to Ephesus today, you'll even see the big Library
  • 00:11:37.060 --> 00:11:41.220
  • of Celsus there.
  • 00:11:41.230 --> 00:11:44.250
  • In fact, it's very--the ruins are very prominent.
  • 00:11:44.260 --> 00:11:47.260
  • And then you walk down from the Library of Celsus and you run
  • 00:11:47.270 --> 00:11:51.170
  • into one of the most magnificent amphitheaters ever.
  • 00:11:51.180 --> 00:11:56.000
  • And this amphitheater seats about 2.500 people, and it's
  • 00:11:56.010 --> 00:12:00.160
  • very intact today.
  • 00:12:00.170 --> 00:12:02.140
  • And next week I'm going to talk about that because when Paul
  • 00:12:02.150 --> 00:12:06.020
  • began to clash with everything that was going on in the city,
  • 00:12:06.030 --> 00:12:09.200
  • they dragged him right there to the amphitheater.
  • 00:12:09.210 --> 00:12:14.100
  • Why to the amphitheater?
  • 00:12:14.110 --> 00:12:15.270
  • Because that's where all the people could get together and
  • 00:12:15.280 --> 00:12:18.230
  • really give it out, put it on Paul because he was telling them
  • 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:25.010
  • about Jesus.
  • 00:12:25.020 --> 00:12:26.220
  • And then of course, and I'll explain this a little bit more
  • 00:12:26.230 --> 00:12:30.030
  • later on, probably one of the most prominent things here is
  • 00:12:30.040 --> 00:12:35.140
  • the temple of Artemis, A-R-T-E-M-I-S,
  • 00:12:35.150 --> 00:12:42.240
  • the Temple of Artemis, very prominent.
  • 00:12:42.250 --> 00:12:47.210
  • In fact, the ruins still stand there today.
  • 00:12:47.220 --> 00:12:51.140
  • And if you want to know who the goddess of Artemis was,
  • 00:12:51.150 --> 00:12:55.270
  • the Romans called her the goddess Diana.
  • 00:12:55.280 --> 00:13:00.150
  • Let me tell you this goddess, she was the goddess of
  • 00:13:00.160 --> 00:13:06.030
  • fertility, child birth.
  • 00:13:06.040 --> 00:13:11.010
  • And there were several other things, wildlife, hunting of all
  • 00:13:11.020 --> 00:13:14.210
  • things, which was very prominent back in those days.
  • 00:13:14.220 --> 00:13:19.200
  • This goddess, she was the goddess of chastity.
  • 00:13:19.210 --> 00:13:28.170
  • So you got fertility, chastity, child birth.
  • 00:13:28.180 --> 00:13:31.240
  • I want you to just think of all of these things.
  • 00:13:31.250 --> 00:13:35.060
  • So a cult grew up around the goddess called Diana or Artemis.
  • 00:13:35.070 --> 00:13:44.010
  • They erected a temple and the cult began to dictate the
  • 00:13:44.020 --> 00:13:49.170
  • religious fervor of the city.
  • 00:13:49.180 --> 00:13:54.040
  • People followed the cult goddess.
  • 00:13:54.050 --> 00:13:58.230
  • And into this comes Paul.
  • 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:03.230
  • I want you to just thing about that.
  • 00:14:03.240 --> 00:14:05.190
  • So think about your own city right now.
  • 00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:12.120
  • So I want to read to you just a few excerpts.
  • 00:14:12.130 --> 00:14:15.020
  • Can I do that?
  • 00:14:15.030 --> 00:14:16.200
  • I'm going to read to you just a few excerpts because it's quite
  • 00:14:16.210 --> 00:14:19.140
  • a long story.
  • 00:14:19.150 --> 00:14:21.230
  • Acts chapter 18.
  • 00:14:21.240 --> 00:14:24.150
  • Let's start with verse 24, "Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of
  • 00:14:24.160 --> 00:14:29.220
  • Alexandria, came to Ephesus.
  • 00:14:29.230 --> 00:14:33.270
  • He was an eloquent man, competent in the scriptures.
  • 00:14:33.280 --> 00:14:37.140
  • He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, been fervent in
  • 00:14:37.150 --> 00:14:40.000
  • spirit and he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning
  • 00:14:40.010 --> 00:14:43.220
  • of about Jesus," now watch this little note here, "even though
  • 00:14:43.230 --> 00:14:48.100
  • he only knew the baptism of John."
  • 00:14:48.110 --> 00:14:56.240
  • Very important, all right.
  • 00:14:56.250 --> 00:14:58.090
  • Let's go to chapter 19.
  • 00:14:58.100 --> 00:15:00.150
  • This is in Ephesus.
  • 00:15:00.160 --> 00:15:02.220
  • "And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul
  • 00:15:02.230 --> 00:15:05.190
  • passed through the country and came to Ephesus.
  • 00:15:05.200 --> 00:15:10.160
  • There he found some disciples.
  • 00:15:10.170 --> 00:15:12.080
  • And he said to them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit
  • 00:15:12.090 --> 00:15:15.140
  • when you believed?'
  • 00:15:15.150 --> 00:15:19.130
  • And they said, 'No, we have not even heard that
  • 00:15:19.140 --> 00:15:22.140
  • there is a Holy Spirit.'
  • 00:15:22.150 --> 00:15:25.180
  • And then he said to them, 'Into what then were you baptized?'
  • 00:15:25.190 --> 00:15:31.230
  • And they said, 'Into John's baptism.'"
  • 00:15:31.240 --> 00:15:39.280
  • Before I read the next page I'm just going to ask a question,
  • 00:15:39.290 --> 00:15:42.190
  • is there anyone here who would suggest
  • 00:15:42.200 --> 00:15:44.120
  • that John could save anybody?
  • 00:15:44.130 --> 00:15:49.290
  • All right. Let's go down to verse 8.
  • 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:51.280
  • This is all happening in Ephesus.
  • 00:15:51.290 --> 00:15:56.000
  • "And he entered the synagogue and for three months he spoke
  • 00:15:56.010 --> 00:15:59.190
  • boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
  • 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:08.160
  • But when some became stubborn and continued in their unbelief,
  • 00:16:08.170 --> 00:16:14.150
  • speaking evil of the Way of the Lord before the congregation, he
  • 00:16:14.160 --> 00:16:18.170
  • withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning
  • 00:16:18.180 --> 00:16:22.100
  • daily in the hall of Tyrannus," who by the way was
  • 00:16:22.110 --> 00:16:27.020
  • a great teacher.
  • 00:16:27.030 --> 00:16:28.280
  • The word "Tyrannus" is the derivative of the word "tyrant."
  • 00:16:28.290 --> 00:16:33.250
  • And some historians--why am I telling you this?
  • 00:16:33.260 --> 00:16:36.240
  • I don't know.
  • 00:16:36.250 --> 00:16:38.100
  • I'm just telling you little tidbits of information here--but
  • 00:16:38.110 --> 00:16:40.200
  • some historians the word derivative is tyrant, they
  • 00:16:40.210 --> 00:16:45.090
  • believe that he was so astute, he was so learned, he was so
  • 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:49.210
  • highly held that students referred to him
  • 00:16:49.220 --> 00:16:53.120
  • as the educated tyrant.
  • 00:16:53.130 --> 00:16:57.170
  • Man, you get in front of Tyrannus, boy, he's a tyrant,
  • 00:16:57.180 --> 00:17:00.230
  • he'll put so much education on you, you won't even begin to
  • 00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:04.070
  • think anymore.
  • 00:17:04.080 --> 00:17:06.270
  • You'll get an overload.
  • 00:17:06.280 --> 00:17:08.260
  • All right. Let's go down to verse 11.
  • 00:17:08.270 --> 00:17:11.170
  • "And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul,
  • 00:17:11.180 --> 00:17:16.190
  • so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that he touched, that
  • 00:17:16.200 --> 00:17:20.100
  • touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their
  • 00:17:20.110 --> 00:17:23.130
  • diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them."
  • 00:17:23.140 --> 00:17:27.290
  • Now, go down to verse 20.
  • 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:30.210
  • "So the Word of the Lord continued to increase
  • 00:17:30.220 --> 00:17:35.070
  • and prevail mightily."
  • 00:17:35.080 --> 00:17:40.280
  • So the people of Ephesus, as we try to get an understanding as a
  • 00:17:40.290 --> 00:17:48.220
  • people as to what exactly is it that God is trying to teach us,
  • 00:17:48.230 --> 00:17:56.250
  • what about these people?
  • 00:17:56.260 --> 00:17:58.150
  • What about Ephesus?
  • 00:17:58.160 --> 00:18:01.000
  • And I'm going to make this statement again, in order to
  • 00:18:01.010 --> 00:18:05.220
  • effectively reach anybody for Christ, make it your business to
  • 00:18:05.230 --> 00:18:13.120
  • know who they are.
  • 00:18:13.130 --> 00:18:22.190
  • You want to reach your city for Christ, become well versed in
  • 00:18:22.200 --> 00:18:30.090
  • the cultural, social, political, societal make-up of the people
  • 00:18:30.100 --> 00:18:38.280
  • into which you are bringing the gospel.
  • 00:18:41.270 --> 00:18:47.110
  • Dr. Billy Graham told me frequently over 25 years
  • 00:18:47.120 --> 00:18:52.250
  • he would tell me so often about crusades in parts
  • 00:18:52.260 --> 00:18:59.150
  • all over the world.
  • 00:18:59.160 --> 00:19:02.070
  • Do you know that with the Billy Graham crusades and now with
  • 00:19:02.080 --> 00:19:04.290
  • Franklin and Will preaching all over the country and what God is
  • 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.150
  • doing, Mr. Graham would look at me and he'd say to me, "Don, you
  • 00:19:09.160 --> 00:19:14.160
  • know, we would go into a city, sometimes two years
  • 00:19:14.170 --> 00:19:19.190
  • before the crusade began."
  • 00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:22.290
  • They would have advanced teams going in.
  • 00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:26.010
  • And those advanced teams would go and live among the people,
  • 00:19:26.020 --> 00:19:31.190
  • and they would prepare.
  • 00:19:31.200 --> 00:19:33.250
  • Why?
  • 00:19:33.260 --> 00:19:35.190
  • The number one reason was to understand the city into which
  • 00:19:35.200 --> 00:19:40.290
  • he was bringing the gospel.
  • 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:43.050
  • Mr. Graham would spend literally days, days if not months getting
  • 00:19:43.060 --> 00:19:50.010
  • reports and studying and preparing his heart whether he
  • 00:19:50.020 --> 00:19:53.160
  • was in England or whether he was in India, or whether he was in
  • 00:19:53.170 --> 00:19:56.200
  • Africa or Asia or the United States, he would spend countless
  • 00:19:56.210 --> 00:20:04.130
  • amounts of time understanding the people and the culture and
  • 00:20:04.140 --> 00:20:08.270
  • the make-up and the politics into which he was bringing this
  • 00:20:08.280 --> 00:20:14.210
  • message, which is unalterable, unchanging.
  • 00:20:14.220 --> 00:20:24.100
  • So what can you say about the people of Ephesus?
  • 00:20:24.110 --> 00:20:28.090
  • I'm going to just touch on this.
  • 00:20:28.100 --> 00:20:31.210
  • Number of things among these people.
  • 00:20:31.220 --> 00:20:34.070
  • Well, first of all some of them were taught passionately when
  • 00:20:34.080 --> 00:20:38.230
  • Paul arrived there.
  • 00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:40.150
  • There was passionate teaching going on.
  • 00:20:40.160 --> 00:20:44.250
  • Apollos.
  • 00:20:44.260 --> 00:20:46.160
  • Apollos was there and he was just one of many.
  • 00:20:46.170 --> 00:20:49.210
  • And he was teaching the Word of God passionately.
  • 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:52.010
  • So there was the presence of the gospel even though the Bible
  • 00:20:52.020 --> 00:20:57.260
  • tells us that he was doing it not with the full,
  • 00:20:57.270 --> 00:21:02.070
  • complete understanding of the gospel, because it hadn't
  • 00:21:02.080 --> 00:21:05.000
  • reached him yet.
  • 00:21:05.010 --> 00:21:07.190
  • It was still--Jesus was still fresh, okay.
  • 00:21:07.200 --> 00:21:13.240
  • We're looking here--the word back then they didn't have the
  • 00:21:13.250 --> 00:21:17.130
  • means, they didn't have the printed scriptures, right.
  • 00:21:17.140 --> 00:21:25.110
  • A little while later we're going to find out that's why God, who
  • 00:21:25.120 --> 00:21:28.220
  • always loves people, even used people like Paul as the means of
  • 00:21:28.230 --> 00:21:37.240
  • printed scripture to show people about even healing.
  • 00:21:37.250 --> 00:21:45.000
  • They didn't have the means that we are so accustomed to.
  • 00:21:45.010 --> 00:21:50.210
  • So some taught passionately.
  • 00:21:50.220 --> 00:21:54.000
  • But some also believed sincerely but they didn't know.
  • 00:21:54.010 --> 00:22:01.230
  • Bible tells us in chapter 19, one of the first things Paul did
  • 00:22:01.240 --> 00:22:07.230
  • in the context of these people was say to them, "Have you
  • 00:22:07.240 --> 00:22:13.150
  • received the Holy Spirit?"
  • 00:22:13.160 --> 00:22:17.290
  • They kind of--he asked them the most important question you
  • 00:22:18.000 --> 00:22:21.130
  • could ever ask because he understood what was going on.
  • 00:22:21.140 --> 00:22:28.110
  • But they were very sincere in what they believed through John
  • 00:22:28.120 --> 00:22:35.190
  • the Baptist.
  • 00:22:35.200 --> 00:22:40.200
  • You can go to any city in the United States of America and
  • 00:22:40.210 --> 00:22:44.090
  • you're going to find some--a lot of very religiously
  • 00:22:44.100 --> 00:22:48.240
  • sincere people.
  • 00:22:48.250 --> 00:22:56.280
  • So I've got friends all over the country that have great depth of
  • 00:22:56.290 --> 00:23:04.010
  • religious sincerity but they don't know Jesus.
  • 00:23:04.020 --> 00:23:13.060
  • You can believe deeply in your heart that your church into
  • 00:23:13.070 --> 00:23:22.090
  • which you are born is the means by which you have salvation.
  • 00:23:22.100 --> 00:23:27.200
  • But the Bible doesn't say that the church
  • 00:23:27.210 --> 00:23:29.240
  • can give you salvation.
  • 00:23:29.250 --> 00:23:32.100
  • But you can be some of the most wonderful, sincere people
  • 00:23:32.110 --> 00:23:37.230
  • I've ever met in my life really believe that their church, you
  • 00:23:37.240 --> 00:23:41.260
  • belong to the church and you're going to heaven.
  • 00:23:41.270 --> 00:23:45.120
  • And they're very sincere about it.
  • 00:23:45.130 --> 00:23:49.270
  • I've got friends who are very sincere about doing works.
  • 00:23:49.280 --> 00:23:56.200
  • Your works can--I mean, some of the most unbelievably sincere
  • 00:23:56.210 --> 00:24:01.280
  • people in the world believe genuinely, they genuinely
  • 00:24:01.290 --> 00:24:05.200
  • believe because they go on a mission trip or they give their
  • 00:24:05.210 --> 00:24:09.160
  • money or they do things or they pray certain prayers
  • 00:24:09.170 --> 00:24:15.260
  • and they are as sincere, and I respect them.
  • 00:24:15.270 --> 00:24:20.290
  • Paul came in there and said, "Listen, have you been baptized
  • 00:24:21.000 --> 00:24:23.230
  • in the Holy Spirit?"
  • 00:24:23.240 --> 00:24:25.140
  • And who is--and they said, "Well, John."
  • 00:24:25.150 --> 00:24:27.110
  • They were very sincere.
  • 00:24:27.120 --> 00:24:29.040
  • Paul didn't get up there and say, "Now, give me a break.
  • 00:24:29.050 --> 00:24:33.250
  • You know that only Jesus can save you."
  • 00:24:33.260 --> 00:24:37.130
  • Listen you could be so sincere that you deeply respect the Pope
  • 00:24:37.140 --> 00:24:44.260
  • and you absolutely believe that the Pope is the man and he is
  • 00:24:44.270 --> 00:24:50.160
  • absolutely what he says, what he does and you believe and you can
  • 00:24:50.170 --> 00:24:55.160
  • be as sincere as you can possibly be, but the Pope cannot
  • 00:24:55.170 --> 00:25:02.060
  • give you salvation.
  • 00:25:02.070 --> 00:25:05.200
  • That's what happened here.
  • 00:25:05.210 --> 00:25:08.030
  • And our world today is full of religious sincerity, but do you
  • 00:25:08.040 --> 00:25:13.040
  • know Jesus?
  • 00:25:13.050 --> 00:25:16.020
  • I present to you Jesus.
  • 00:25:16.030 --> 00:25:20.010
  • announcer: You know that's the exciting thing about Jesus
  • 00:25:20.020 --> 00:25:21.220
  • Christ, is he is all inclusive.
  • 00:25:21.230 --> 00:25:24.230
  • He's ready to receive you.
  • 00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:26.110
  • But it's not about your sincerity.
  • 00:25:26.120 --> 00:25:28.070
  • You could be sincerely wrong about some of the things that
  • 00:25:28.080 --> 00:25:30.200
  • are going on in life or your own life.
  • 00:25:30.210 --> 00:25:32.280
  • But when you just come to Jesus with honesty and say,
  • 00:25:32.290 --> 00:25:35.110
  • "God, I realize that I messed up," God can change you
  • 00:25:35.120 --> 00:25:39.000
  • from the inside out.
  • 00:25:39.010 --> 00:25:40.240
  • Would you like to pray along with me?
  • 00:25:40.250 --> 00:25:42.110
  • Would you like to give your heart to Jesus right now?
  • 00:25:42.120 --> 00:25:44.150

  • messed up.
  • 00:25:47.220 --> 00:25:49.120
  • Oh, Jesus, I pray that you would help me now turn and move in the
  • 00:25:49.130 --> 00:25:53.160
  • other direction.
  • 00:25:53.170 --> 00:25:54.280
  • God, I confess with my mouth that you are Jesus Christ the
  • 00:25:54.290 --> 00:25:57.240
  • Lord of the universe.
  • 00:25:57.250 --> 00:25:59.110
  • I know you died for my sins, and I accept you as savior and Lord.
  • 00:25:59.120 --> 00:26:03.180
  • In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
  • 00:26:03.190 --> 00:26:06.000

  • 00:26:06.010 --> 00:26:08.040

  • 00:26:24.200 --> 00:26:28.220
  • know that you belong to Jesus."
  • 00:26:28.230 --> 00:26:32.050
