  • 00:00:35.050 --> 00:00:36.230
  • and today you'll find it in the Bible-based preaching of Dr. Don
  • 00:00:36.240 --> 00:00:39.200
  • Wilton right here on "The Encouraging Word."
  • 00:00:39.210 --> 00:00:42.240
  • Don Wilton: You know, when you think of moms,
  • 00:00:44.090 --> 00:00:45.180
  • what do you say?
  • 00:00:45.190 --> 00:00:46.280
  • So here's what I did.
  • 00:00:46.290 --> 00:00:48.080
  • What is it about us men and boys that make us, all our lives,
  • 00:00:48.090 --> 00:00:56.220
  • always want to go to mom's house?
  • 00:00:56.230 --> 00:00:59.070
  • Have you noticed that?
  • 00:00:59.080 --> 00:01:00.230
  • It's like men and boys--you know,
  • 00:01:00.240 --> 00:01:04.210
  • it doesn't matter how old the boys get,
  • 00:01:04.220 --> 00:01:08.110
  • it's a sweet thing to go to mom's house.
  • 00:01:08.120 --> 00:01:13.040
  • So I came up with the five best reasons in this survey of mine
  • 00:01:13.050 --> 00:01:22.090
  • as to why men and boys always want to go back to mom's house.
  • 00:01:22.100 --> 00:01:28.210
  • So I'd like to just share these with you.
  • 00:01:28.220 --> 00:01:30.170
  • These are the five best reasons that I could come up.
  • 00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:34.110
  • Number one, because when they go to mother's house,
  • 00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:36.270
  • they always get their favorite food.
  • 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:42.040
  • I mean, it doesn't--I'm telling you now,
  • 00:01:42.050 --> 00:01:44.160
  • when I'm at mom's house, it's what I--that's important to her.
  • 00:01:44.170 --> 00:01:51.020
  • You walk through the door, my mother-in-law,
  • 00:01:51.030 --> 00:01:53.230
  • my own mom, that's why we go back.
  • 00:01:53.240 --> 00:01:56.270
  • I'm just letting some people know you go back to mom's house
  • 00:01:56.280 --> 00:02:00.040
  • because you always get your favorite food.
  • 00:02:00.050 --> 00:02:02.280
  • That's why men and boys do that.
  • 00:02:02.290 --> 00:02:04.210
  • Number two, here's the second reason why men and boys go back
  • 00:02:04.220 --> 00:02:08.080
  • to mother's house, because they know that mother
  • 00:02:08.090 --> 00:02:12.040
  • forgives but she never forgets.
  • 00:02:12.050 --> 00:02:17.070
  • I just want to add that little--
  • 00:02:17.080 --> 00:02:20.040
  • mothers forgive everything.
  • 00:02:20.050 --> 00:02:23.250
  • They do.
  • 00:02:23.260 --> 00:02:25.110
  • And I'm not talking about myself, of course, 'cause I was
  • 00:02:25.120 --> 00:02:28.100
  • such a perfect son as a boy, and mothers forgive.
  • 00:02:28.110 --> 00:02:34.090
  • They have this ability to forgive their sons.
  • 00:02:34.100 --> 00:02:38.280
  • It's just amazing thing, but they never forget.
  • 00:02:38.290 --> 00:02:43.140
  • Now you go back, that's why you go back,
  • 00:02:43.150 --> 00:02:45.200
  • 'cause they don't forget.
  • 00:02:45.210 --> 00:02:47.000
  • All right, number three, this is the third reason why men and
  • 00:02:47.010 --> 00:02:50.200
  • boys go back to mother's house, because they can count on mother
  • 00:02:50.210 --> 00:02:55.110
  • knowing everything before they get there.
  • 00:02:55.120 --> 00:02:59.200
  • You walk into mom's house, there's nothing you can tell her
  • 00:02:59.210 --> 00:03:03.290
  • that's going to take her by surprise.
  • 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.160
  • I mean, mothers, what is it about you?
  • 00:03:06.170 --> 00:03:09.260
  • It's like that all your life, you have these eyes
  • 00:03:09.270 --> 00:03:12.140
  • in the back of your head.
  • 00:03:12.150 --> 00:03:14.090
  • You have a hidden antenna somewhere.
  • 00:03:14.100 --> 00:03:17.080
  • It's just like mothers know,. They just know.
  • 00:03:17.090 --> 00:03:19.200
  • You don't have to explain something.
  • 00:03:19.210 --> 00:03:21.230
  • Just walk in there and they know,
  • 00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:23.270
  • which saves men a lot 'cause men don't like to have to get in
  • 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:27.200
  • there and talk about all this stuff.
  • 00:03:27.210 --> 00:03:29.250
  • Just walk in, she knows.
  • 00:03:29.260 --> 00:03:31.240
  • Get your favorite food and enjoy yourself, all right?
  • 00:03:31.250 --> 00:03:36.100
  • Number four, here's the fourth reason why men and boys go back
  • 00:03:36.110 --> 00:03:40.020
  • is because they are absolutely guaranteed that mother will
  • 00:03:40.030 --> 00:03:43.240
  • always take their side.
  • 00:03:43.250 --> 00:03:49.110
  • And looking around at some of the men and boys, yeah,
  • 00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:51.280
  • you need to go back to mama's house quickly.
  • 00:03:51.290 --> 00:03:55.180
  • I tell you, the whole world can be
  • 00:03:55.190 --> 00:03:57.160
  • against you, but not mom.
  • 00:03:57.170 --> 00:04:00.020
  • It doesn't matter what you've done.
  • 00:04:00.030 --> 00:04:01.120
  • She's going to take your side, right?
  • 00:04:01.130 --> 00:04:03.220
  • Men, would you agree with me?
  • 00:04:03.230 --> 00:04:05.210
  • Mom's always on your team.
  • 00:04:05.220 --> 00:04:07.130
  • Here's the final one I'm just going to give.
  • 00:04:07.140 --> 00:04:09.110
  • Because they go back to mother's house because men and boys know
  • 00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:13.130
  • that they are guaranteed an invitation to come back again.
  • 00:04:13.140 --> 00:04:19.100
  • I mean, it's always. It doesn't matter.
  • 00:04:19.110 --> 00:04:21.220
  • You could--it doesn't matter what you do.
  • 00:04:21.230 --> 00:04:25.260
  • Mom always wants you to come back,
  • 00:04:25.270 --> 00:04:29.130
  • and they have a big hole in their heart when you don't.
  • 00:04:29.140 --> 00:04:33.040
  • Turn with me in your Bibles to the book of Acts and chapter 12.
  • 00:04:33.050 --> 00:04:40.120
  • I want you to take a look at this.
  • 00:04:40.130 --> 00:04:42.110
  • We're going to walk into a mother's house in Acts,
  • 00:04:42.120 --> 00:04:48.290
  • the book of Acts and chapter 12.
  • 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:53.070
  • There was a dire situation that was occurring.
  • 00:04:53.080 --> 00:04:57.120
  • This world was a difficult world.
  • 00:04:57.130 --> 00:05:01.170
  • There were a lot of people out there that hated Christians,
  • 00:05:01.180 --> 00:05:07.170
  • and there were a lot of sons and daughters that were living their
  • 00:05:07.180 --> 00:05:11.060
  • lives and they were dealing with every kind of stress and strain
  • 00:05:11.070 --> 00:05:15.270
  • you can possibly imagine.
  • 00:05:15.280 --> 00:05:18.200
  • It was so bad that some of them were even being
  • 00:05:18.210 --> 00:05:21.290
  • thrown into prison for it.
  • 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:25.200
  • So let me just read this to you.
  • 00:05:25.210 --> 00:05:28.100
  • I'm going to show you something here from God's Word today.
  • 00:05:28.110 --> 00:05:32.090
  • Verse 1 of Acts chapter 12, "About that time,
  • 00:05:32.100 --> 00:05:35.130
  • Herod the king laid violent hands on some
  • 00:05:35.140 --> 00:05:40.070
  • who belonged to the church.
  • 00:05:40.080 --> 00:05:43.160
  • And so he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.
  • 00:05:43.170 --> 00:05:50.010
  • And when he saw that it pleased the Jews,
  • 00:05:50.020 --> 00:05:54.200
  • he proceeded to arrest Peter also.
  • 00:05:54.210 --> 00:05:58.130
  • This was during the days of unleavened bread.
  • 00:05:58.140 --> 00:06:01.130
  • When he had seized him, he put him in prison,
  • 00:06:01.140 --> 00:06:03.290
  • delivering him over to four squadrons of soldiers,
  • 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:10.110
  • delivering him over to four squadrons of soldiers to guard
  • 00:06:10.120 --> 00:06:14.230
  • him, intending that after the Passover he would
  • 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:18.230
  • bring him out to the people.
  • 00:06:18.240 --> 00:06:20.150
  • So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was
  • 00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:25.110
  • made to God by the church.
  • 00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:30.010
  • Now, when Herod was about to bring him out on that very
  • 00:06:30.020 --> 00:06:32.160
  • night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers,
  • 00:06:32.170 --> 00:06:36.190
  • bound with two chains, and sentries before the
  • 00:06:36.200 --> 00:06:39.210
  • door were guarding the prison.
  • 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:41.230
  • Behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him,
  • 00:06:41.240 --> 00:06:44.120
  • and a light shone in the cell.
  • 00:06:44.130 --> 00:06:49.070
  • He struck Peter on the side and woke him up,
  • 00:06:49.080 --> 00:06:52.060
  • saying, 'Get up quickly, Peter.'
  • 00:06:52.070 --> 00:06:55.170
  • And the chains fell off his hands.
  • 00:06:55.180 --> 00:06:57.240
  • The angel said to him, 'Dress yourself.
  • 00:06:57.250 --> 00:07:01.050
  • Put on your sandals.'
  • 00:07:01.060 --> 00:07:02.150
  • And he did so.
  • 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:03.250
  • He said to him, 'Wrap your cloak around you.
  • 00:07:03.260 --> 00:07:06.200
  • Follow me.'
  • 00:07:06.210 --> 00:07:08.010
  • And he went out and followed him.
  • 00:07:08.020 --> 00:07:10.030
  • He did not know that this was being done by the angel was
  • 00:07:10.040 --> 00:07:13.170
  • real, but thought he was seeing a vision.
  • 00:07:13.180 --> 00:07:16.270
  • When they'd passed the first and the second guard,
  • 00:07:16.280 --> 00:07:19.120
  • they came to the iron gate leading into the city.
  • 00:07:19.130 --> 00:07:21.270
  • It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out
  • 00:07:21.280 --> 00:07:25.000
  • and went along the street and immediately the angel left him.
  • 00:07:25.010 --> 00:07:30.040
  • So Peter, when he came to himself, he said, 'Now I'm sure
  • 00:07:30.050 --> 00:07:34.180
  • that the Lord has sent his angels and rescued me from the
  • 00:07:34.190 --> 00:07:38.040
  • hand of Herod and from all the Jewish people and
  • 00:07:38.050 --> 00:07:41.050
  • what they were expecting.'
  • 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:43.120
  • When he realized this, he went to the home of Mary,
  • 00:07:43.130 --> 00:07:52.020
  • the mother of John whose other name was Mark,
  • 00:07:52.030 --> 00:07:56.230
  • where many had gathered together and we're praying.
  • 00:07:56.240 --> 00:08:00.220
  • And when he knocked at the door of the gateway,
  • 00:08:00.230 --> 00:08:04.020
  • a servant girl by the name of Rhoda came to answer.
  • 00:08:04.030 --> 00:08:10.040
  • Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy she
  • 00:08:10.050 --> 00:08:16.000
  • didn't open the gate.
  • 00:08:16.010 --> 00:08:19.170
  • She turned around and she ran in and reported that
  • 00:08:19.180 --> 00:08:22.240
  • Peter was standing at the gate.
  • 00:08:22.250 --> 00:08:25.240
  • They said to her, 'You must be out of your mind,'
  • 00:08:25.250 --> 00:08:27.250
  • but she kept insisting that it was so and they kept
  • 00:08:27.260 --> 00:08:30.100
  • saying, 'No, it's an angel.'
  • 00:08:30.110 --> 00:08:32.140
  • But Peter [knocking] continued knocking.
  • 00:08:32.150 --> 00:08:37.110
  • And when they opened it, they saw him and were amazed.
  • 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:44.190
  • But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described
  • 00:08:44.200 --> 00:08:51.080
  • to them how the Lord had brought him out of prison.
  • 00:08:51.090 --> 00:08:55.040
  • And he said, 'Tell these things to James and to the brothers.'
  • 00:08:55.050 --> 00:08:58.110
  • and then he departed and went to another place."
  • 00:08:58.120 --> 00:09:04.000
  • Just a couple of things I just want to tell you.
  • 00:09:04.010 --> 00:09:06.210
  • This was a treacherous time, and people there really hated people
  • 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:16.100
  • who believed in Jesus, and it went all the way to the top.
  • 00:09:16.110 --> 00:09:22.280
  • Herod, of course, didn't realize that you come against God,
  • 00:09:22.290 --> 00:09:28.180
  • you're going to pay a high consequence,
  • 00:09:28.190 --> 00:09:30.210
  • and he paid for that with his life, and in not a good way.
  • 00:09:30.220 --> 00:09:36.230
  • Herod did.
  • 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:38.140
  • But at this stage, Herod was the cock of the walk.
  • 00:09:38.150 --> 00:09:44.230
  • He was in charge.
  • 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:46.120
  • He was large and he was in charge,
  • 00:09:46.130 --> 00:09:49.140
  • and he was angry and he didn't like it and he wanted to carry
  • 00:09:49.150 --> 00:09:56.000
  • favor with the mob of people out there who, many of whom had
  • 00:09:56.010 --> 00:10:01.270
  • religion, but they certainly had no relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:10:01.280 --> 00:10:08.190
  • So here's Peter, and he is released from prison.
  • 00:10:08.200 --> 00:10:16.200
  • He's not quite sure how to get a handle on this.
  • 00:10:16.210 --> 00:10:20.180
  • He doesn't even know how to figure it out and the first
  • 00:10:20.190 --> 00:10:25.020
  • place he goes to is to a mother's house.
  • 00:10:25.030 --> 00:10:30.280
  • Wonder why he did that.
  • 00:10:30.290 --> 00:10:34.210
  • What would the Bible teach us about that?
  • 00:10:34.220 --> 00:10:38.060
  • He could have gone to a number of places,
  • 00:10:38.070 --> 00:10:41.050
  • but he went to Mary's house, the mother of John Mark.
  • 00:10:41.060 --> 00:10:47.200
  • I think that the Scriptures here throw quite a bit of light, and
  • 00:10:47.210 --> 00:10:53.160
  • there are some things that we can infer based upon
  • 00:10:53.170 --> 00:10:59.080
  • what the Bible tells us about the content of a household,
  • 00:10:59.090 --> 00:11:03.130
  • and I've just shared some of those things
  • 00:11:03.140 --> 00:11:05.170
  • even in relation to her son.
  • 00:11:05.180 --> 00:11:10.270
  • She was a very special mother.
  • 00:11:10.280 --> 00:11:15.020
  • She must have been.
  • 00:11:15.030 --> 00:11:16.120
  • So let me just give you five things that God's Word teaches
  • 00:11:16.130 --> 00:11:23.170
  • us about mother's house.
  • 00:11:23.180 --> 00:11:26.270
  • I think Peter went to this mother's house,
  • 00:11:26.280 --> 00:11:29.180
  • first of all, because she opened up her home.
  • 00:11:29.190 --> 00:11:34.210
  • She was in all likelihood a widow.
  • 00:11:40.190 --> 00:11:45.170
  • In fact, a lot of the theological scholars are adamant
  • 00:11:45.180 --> 00:11:50.190
  • about that; that she was a widow, which means that she
  • 00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:55.270
  • ran her own household.
  • 00:11:55.280 --> 00:12:01.040
  • And yet, she opened up her home.
  • 00:12:01.050 --> 00:12:04.270
  • She--yes, she probably had a gift of hospitality,
  • 00:12:04.280 --> 00:12:12.080
  • and we know that she must have had a lot of wisdom because she
  • 00:12:12.090 --> 00:12:17.180
  • managed her own household and it must have been,
  • 00:12:17.190 --> 00:12:21.170
  • by their standards, a fairly substantial household to
  • 00:12:21.180 --> 00:12:25.180
  • accommodate gatherings like this.
  • 00:12:25.190 --> 00:12:28.250
  • But the thing that's most significant in terms of opening
  • 00:12:28.260 --> 00:12:32.190
  • her home was that it spoke to her inordinate courage.
  • 00:12:32.200 --> 00:12:42.090
  • Folks, do we realize the threat that was out there in the
  • 00:12:42.100 --> 00:12:46.140
  • street, the secret police, people walking around trying
  • 00:12:46.150 --> 00:12:54.120
  • to find someone to report.
  • 00:12:54.130 --> 00:12:56.130
  • This was not very far from the very prison in
  • 00:12:56.140 --> 00:13:00.080
  • which Peter had been thrown.
  • 00:13:00.090 --> 00:13:01.250
  • This was right in the middle of the action, and yet this widow
  • 00:13:01.260 --> 00:13:06.210
  • had so much love in her heart, she was driven by so much
  • 00:13:06.220 --> 00:13:11.200
  • courage that she said, "Come to me."
  • 00:13:11.210 --> 00:13:19.180
  • I think Peter went there because she's the one
  • 00:13:19.190 --> 00:13:22.080
  • who opened her home.
  • 00:13:22.090 --> 00:13:31.010
  • The chips were down.
  • 00:13:31.020 --> 00:13:34.180
  • Let me tell you something about we men.
  • 00:13:34.190 --> 00:13:36.280
  • We men know where to go when the chips are down.
  • 00:13:36.290 --> 00:13:46.230
  • I feel that way in a personal way and we're all identify.
  • 00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:50.070
  • I feel that way with the mother whom I love most in my own life,
  • 00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:56.000
  • and that's my wife Karen.
  • 00:13:56.010 --> 00:14:01.010
  • It doesn't matter where I am or what I'm
  • 00:14:01.020 --> 00:14:05.100
  • doing or what's going on.
  • 00:14:05.110 --> 00:14:07.070
  • When the chips are down in my life,
  • 00:14:07.080 --> 00:14:10.210
  • I want to be with her.
  • 00:14:10.220 --> 00:14:12.020
  • When the chips are down, I want to be with mom because--I think
  • 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:25.170
  • Peter stood out there--and if you'll beg my pardon,
  • 00:14:25.180 --> 00:14:29.010
  • I'm not trying to read something in here,
  • 00:14:29.020 --> 00:14:31.050
  • but I think Peter was in a daze, in a shock.
  • 00:14:31.060 --> 00:14:34.010
  • He was hurting.
  • 00:14:34.020 --> 00:14:35.110
  • He'd probably been whipped and--he knew he was about to be
  • 00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:38.280
  • killed, and all of a sudden, he's out there on the
  • 00:14:38.290 --> 00:14:41.200
  • street and it's dangerous.
  • 00:14:41.210 --> 00:14:45.250
  • Listen, it was so dangerous that the first thing he told those
  • 00:14:45.260 --> 00:14:50.120
  • people when they opened the door was, "Shhh, shhh, shhh.
  • 00:14:50.130 --> 00:14:55.010
  • Be silent.
  • 00:14:55.020 --> 00:14:57.030
  • Stop all this hooping and hollering.
  • 00:14:57.040 --> 00:14:59.080
  • There are people listening. They're going to find out.
  • 00:14:59.090 --> 00:15:02.020
  • I don't want you to get in trouble.
  • 00:15:02.030 --> 00:15:04.060
  • Calm down."
  • 00:15:04.070 --> 00:15:06.160
  • Why did Peter tell them all to calm down?
  • 00:15:06.170 --> 00:15:09.160
  • That's the first thing he did.
  • 00:15:09.170 --> 00:15:15.260
  • I think Peter went to this mother's house because she
  • 00:15:15.270 --> 00:15:19.280
  • believed in the power of prayer.
  • 00:15:19.290 --> 00:15:26.090
  • Bible tells us that she was in there praying.
  • 00:15:26.100 --> 00:15:34.020
  • You know, just a little while ago,
  • 00:15:34.030 --> 00:15:35.120
  • Steve Wise invited you to submit prayer requests.
  • 00:15:35.130 --> 00:15:39.240
  • Write them down.
  • 00:15:39.250 --> 00:15:41.100
  • This past Tuesday, we prayed together.
  • 00:15:41.110 --> 00:15:45.050
  • I got cards from several of you with your names
  • 00:15:45.060 --> 00:15:48.280
  • written on, with people's names.
  • 00:15:48.290 --> 00:15:52.280
  • This mother knew something.
  • 00:15:52.290 --> 00:15:56.230
  • Well, I can tell you something I know about my mother.
  • 00:15:56.240 --> 00:16:02.120
  • She never stopped praying for me.
  • 00:16:02.130 --> 00:16:07.080
  • Part of my testimony--it's a strong part of my testimony.
  • 00:16:07.090 --> 00:16:13.060
  • I really believe my life, even when I came out of the service
  • 00:16:13.070 --> 00:16:19.040
  • and all these things in my head, the things I kept seeing at
  • 00:16:19.050 --> 00:16:27.080
  • night when I slept, the sleeplessness,
  • 00:16:27.090 --> 00:16:33.250
  • the nightmares, they couldn't shake stuff.
  • 00:16:33.260 --> 00:16:41.080
  • Some of you know what I'm talking about.
  • 00:16:41.090 --> 00:16:46.190
  • Just this turmoil.
  • 00:16:46.200 --> 00:16:50.170
  • There were two women that were praying for me: my mother,
  • 00:16:50.180 --> 00:16:58.280
  • my girlfriend who very quickly became my wife and
  • 00:16:58.290 --> 00:17:02.210
  • never stopped praying for me.
  • 00:17:02.220 --> 00:17:06.050
  • I think Peter went to this mother's house 'cause you cannot
  • 00:17:06.060 --> 00:17:13.020
  • go to any better place at which the person whose door
  • 00:17:13.030 --> 00:17:18.260
  • is open leads in prayer.
  • 00:17:18.270 --> 00:17:26.130
  • This mother--you notice something about mothers?
  • 00:17:26.140 --> 00:17:32.110
  • They pray regardless.
  • 00:17:32.120 --> 00:17:38.210
  • I think that Peter went to this mother's house because
  • 00:17:38.220 --> 00:17:43.260
  • she had a mother's heart.
  • 00:17:43.270 --> 00:17:49.250
  • We could spend the next long time talking
  • 00:17:49.260 --> 00:17:53.040
  • about a mother's heart.
  • 00:17:53.050 --> 00:17:56.110
  • I listed some here.
  • 00:17:56.120 --> 00:17:58.020
  • I wrote these things down, what is a mother's heart.
  • 00:17:58.030 --> 00:18:02.140
  • Intuition, discernment,
  • 00:18:02.150 --> 00:18:11.070
  • warm, hospitable, inviting,
  • 00:18:11.080 --> 00:18:20.270
  • inclusive, caring.
  • 00:18:20.280 --> 00:18:30.240
  • I took my 93-year-old mother's hands in mine on Thursday.
  • 00:18:30.250 --> 00:18:40.070
  • I looked down, she's got these little hands.
  • 00:18:40.080 --> 00:18:44.030
  • When I closed my mind and I think of my mother,
  • 00:18:44.040 --> 00:18:48.050
  • I so often see those little hands of hers
  • 00:18:48.060 --> 00:18:51.250
  • with her little wedding ring.
  • 00:18:51.260 --> 00:18:54.160
  • Those hands are etched into my soul spurt.
  • 00:18:54.170 --> 00:19:02.200
  • They're the hands that reached out.
  • 00:19:02.210 --> 00:19:04.210
  • They're the hands that touched.
  • 00:19:04.220 --> 00:19:06.030
  • They're the hands that loved.
  • 00:19:06.040 --> 00:19:07.230
  • They're the hands that picked up.
  • 00:19:07.240 --> 00:19:10.130
  • They're the hands that prayed.
  • 00:19:10.140 --> 00:19:13.290
  • Bless you, mom, for your hands.
  • 00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:17.100
  • It come from your heart.
  • 00:19:17.110 --> 00:19:20.030
  • Your hands are attached somehow.
  • 00:19:20.040 --> 00:19:23.140
  • If we didn't know the difference, we'd
  • 00:19:23.150 --> 00:19:24.240
  • think your hands were your heart.
  • 00:19:24.250 --> 00:19:31.070
  • Caring, that just warm embrace.
  • 00:19:31.080 --> 00:19:35.280
  • You know, why did Peter facing death, running for fear of his
  • 00:19:35.290 --> 00:19:41.110
  • life, looking over his shoulder ran to this mother's house?
  • 00:19:41.120 --> 00:19:49.040
  • Oh, she's the one who opened up her home because she believed in
  • 00:19:49.050 --> 00:19:53.020
  • the power of prayer, because she had a mother's heart,
  • 00:19:53.030 --> 00:19:55.150
  • but I think also because she valued the gathered church.
  • 00:19:55.160 --> 00:20:01.030
  • This mother valued the gathered church.
  • 00:20:01.040 --> 00:20:09.000
  • How many times has your mother begged you to come to church?
  • 00:20:09.010 --> 00:20:12.070
  • What is this?
  • 00:20:16.130 --> 00:20:18.230
  • You know, here's all this going on and this mother says,
  • 00:20:18.240 --> 00:20:22.060
  • "Let's gather together."
  • 00:20:22.070 --> 00:20:27.170
  • This place that God gives to people like you and me,
  • 00:20:27.180 --> 00:20:33.200
  • this New Testament gathering of people where equipping takes
  • 00:20:33.210 --> 00:20:41.120
  • place, strategizing, praying, encouragement.
  • 00:20:41.130 --> 00:20:46.140
  • Aren't you glad you just came to church?
  • 00:20:46.150 --> 00:20:52.220
  • I think Peter went to her house because he understood that, from
  • 00:20:52.230 --> 00:20:58.220
  • her heart, she got it, the value that she had in her heart about
  • 00:20:58.230 --> 00:21:04.270
  • the significance of the gathered church.
  • 00:21:04.280 --> 00:21:09.210
  • She wasn't prepared to go down that road of saying,
  • 00:21:09.220 --> 00:21:13.070
  • "Look, you know, it doesn't matter.
  • 00:21:13.080 --> 00:21:15.020
  • Just do whatever you want to whenever you want to,
  • 00:21:15.030 --> 00:21:17.200
  • and occasionally get with God and you can
  • 00:21:17.210 --> 00:21:20.050
  • meet him anywhere you like."
  • 00:21:20.060 --> 00:21:22.100
  • She understood that this was a God commission instituted by
  • 00:21:22.110 --> 00:21:27.140
  • Jesus Christ that becomes a fundamental necessity
  • 00:21:27.150 --> 00:21:32.160
  • in the human predicament.
  • 00:21:32.170 --> 00:21:35.270
  • God has given to us his church.
  • 00:21:35.280 --> 00:21:38.220
  • But, you know, I think that he went to this mother's house,
  • 00:21:38.230 --> 00:21:44.080
  • last but not least by any means, because
  • 00:21:44.090 --> 00:21:47.220
  • she was a genuine witness.
  • 00:21:47.230 --> 00:21:52.130
  • She was a genuinely-changed lady.
  • 00:21:52.140 --> 00:21:55.220
  • She was charged, fueled by the Spirit of the Living God.
  • 00:21:55.230 --> 00:21:59.280
  • She was committed.
  • 00:21:59.290 --> 00:22:03.230
  • He wanted to be with somebody that was the real deal.
  • 00:22:03.240 --> 00:22:12.210
  • Yeah, I find that when I'm with my mother-in-law,
  • 00:22:12.220 --> 00:22:15.260
  • I'm with someone who's the real deal.
  • 00:22:15.270 --> 00:22:20.020
  • When I'm with my mom, I'm with the real deal.
  • 00:22:20.030 --> 00:22:21.280
  • When I'm with my--I'm with the real deal.
  • 00:22:21.290 --> 00:22:24.190
  • When you go into a mother's house,
  • 00:22:24.200 --> 00:22:26.250
  • you're in the real--it's like everything else--I don't know,
  • 00:22:26.260 --> 00:22:31.270
  • I'm not down on us men, but it's like we build sandcastles
  • 00:22:31.280 --> 00:22:38.080
  • most of the time, and we place such inordinate value on
  • 00:22:38.090 --> 00:22:43.250
  • good things, but that are not necessarily the stuff
  • 00:22:43.260 --> 00:22:52.240
  • that holds together in life.
  • 00:22:52.250 --> 00:22:54.190
  • Our value system battles.
  • 00:22:54.200 --> 00:22:58.210
  • A mother's heart understands the value of just being together,
  • 00:22:58.220 --> 00:23:06.230
  • of real love, of what it means to sit down and enjoy a meal
  • 00:23:06.240 --> 00:23:14.010
  • together, to just stop, to wrap a gift on a birthday,
  • 00:23:14.020 --> 00:23:22.280
  • to say something that means a lot.
  • 00:23:22.290 --> 00:23:25.190
  • And above all, you know, mothers,
  • 00:23:25.200 --> 00:23:32.030
  • they're such genuine witnesses.
  • 00:23:32.040 --> 00:23:35.030
  • They know that at the end of the day, what really matters is that
  • 00:23:35.040 --> 00:23:38.210
  • their sons and daughters know Jesus.
  • 00:23:38.220 --> 00:23:46.190
  • You can build empires and go places and run for office ad
  • 00:23:46.200 --> 00:23:52.060
  • infinitum and pastor wonderful churches,
  • 00:23:52.070 --> 00:23:56.140
  • and you can play the stock market.
  • 00:23:56.150 --> 00:24:01.180
  • You can even become someone who holds high office in the land
  • 00:24:01.190 --> 00:24:07.210
  • and drive a beautiful motor car, and all of these things have
  • 00:24:07.220 --> 00:24:12.080
  • their value and their place, and ought to be celebrated.
  • 00:24:12.090 --> 00:24:18.170
  • But, you know, I think he went to this mother's house because
  • 00:24:18.180 --> 00:24:24.110
  • he knew when he opened that door that the Jesus who sat at her
  • 00:24:24.120 --> 00:24:29.250
  • table was the one that really mattered.
  • 00:24:29.260 --> 00:24:36.190
  • Don: Hello, my dear friends.
  • 00:24:39.150 --> 00:24:41.120
  • I want to speak to you personally today,
  • 00:24:41.130 --> 00:24:44.110
  • from my heart to yours.
  • 00:24:44.120 --> 00:24:46.210
  • I don't think there isn't ever a better or more important time
  • 00:24:46.220 --> 00:24:50.270
  • for us to respond to our world by
  • 00:24:50.280 --> 00:24:54.070
  • standing up for righteousness.
  • 00:24:54.080 --> 00:24:56.270
  • We're living today in a day and age in the crossfire of multiple
  • 00:24:56.280 --> 00:25:01.200
  • cross currents that you and I know full well are challenging
  • 00:25:01.210 --> 00:25:06.080
  • the very fabric of our faith.
  • 00:25:06.090 --> 00:25:09.020
  • We must stand strong in our convictions.
  • 00:25:09.030 --> 00:25:12.160
  • The Encouraging Word broadcast ministry is doing just that,
  • 00:25:12.170 --> 00:25:16.250
  • and we are supported by viewers and listeners just like you who
  • 00:25:16.260 --> 00:25:20.250
  • want to make a difference in our world for Christ.
  • 00:25:20.260 --> 00:25:24.170
  • So please call the number on your screen and request my
