  • and today you'll find it in the Bible-based preaching

  • of Dr. Don Wilton, right here on "The Encouraging Word."
  • 00:00:37.010 --> 00:00:40.170
  • Dr. Don Wilton: I'm going to ask you today to open
  • 00:00:43.160 --> 00:00:46.130
  • your Bibles to the book of Acts and chapter 13.
  • 00:00:46.140 --> 00:00:52.200
  • The book of Acts and chapter 13.
  • 00:00:52.210 --> 00:00:57.280
  • God's call to go is an amazing thing.
  • 00:00:57.290 --> 00:01:04.130
  • Paul set the bar very high.
  • 00:01:04.140 --> 00:01:08.260
  • This man was a terrible man.
  • 00:01:08.270 --> 00:01:15.000
  • He had to have been.
  • 00:01:15.010 --> 00:01:17.180
  • His behavior was not unlike ISIS.
  • 00:01:17.190 --> 00:01:22.030
  • He was about persecuting Christians.
  • 00:01:22.040 --> 00:01:25.110
  • He relished that. He hated God.
  • 00:01:25.120 --> 00:01:28.200
  • And then he met the Lord Jesus on the Road to Damascus.
  • 00:01:28.210 --> 00:01:32.200
  • When he did, he--his life--whole changed completely and Paul,
  • 00:01:32.210 --> 00:01:38.270
  • who was then known as Saul, said, "Lord, I'll go."
  • 00:01:38.280 --> 00:01:44.010
  • And it wasn't too long after that that God made it very clear
  • 00:01:44.020 --> 00:01:47.160
  • that he wanted him to leave his home in Tarsus
  • 00:01:47.170 --> 00:01:52.110
  • and begin to travel to various places in their known world,
  • 00:01:52.120 --> 00:01:58.290
  • just telling people about the Lord Jesus.
  • 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:03.120
  • And this is exactly what he did.
  • 00:02:03.130 --> 00:02:05.090
  • We're in the middle part of his first journey.
  • 00:02:05.100 --> 00:02:11.270
  • I'm going to show you some things today that are really
  • 00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:14.290
  • marvelous, but I want to read to you first of all.
  • 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:18.210
  • And so, there's a lot to read from.
  • 00:02:18.220 --> 00:02:21.030
  • I'm going to be going to different passages,
  • 00:02:21.040 --> 00:02:24.070
  • so I want you to follow along real closely in the Bible
  • 00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:27.170
  • that you have today.
  • 00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:29.080
  • I'm gonna begin in Acts chapter 13, and verse 13.
  • 00:02:29.090 --> 00:02:35.130
  • "Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos,"
  • 00:02:35.140 --> 00:02:39.170
  • which is on the island of Cyprus,
  • 00:02:39.180 --> 00:02:43.040
  • "and came to Perga in Pamphylia."
  • 00:02:43.050 --> 00:02:45.180
  • That's where John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
  • 00:02:45.190 --> 00:02:50.000
  • "But they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia.
  • 00:02:50.010 --> 00:02:55.260
  • And on the Sabbath day, they went into the synagogue
  • 00:02:55.270 --> 00:02:58.270
  • and they sat down.
  • 00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:01.010
  • And after reading from the law and the prophets, the rulers of
  • 00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:04.270
  • the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, 'If you have any
  • 00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:09.030
  • word of encouragement for the people, say it.'
  • 00:03:09.040 --> 00:03:14.160
  • So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand, he said:
  • 00:03:14.170 --> 00:03:22.100
  • 'Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen up.'"
  • 00:03:22.110 --> 00:03:27.230
  • And by the way, we now have one of the longest recorded
  • 00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:31.260
  • sermons in the Bible.
  • 00:03:31.270 --> 00:03:34.050
  • So, I want you to move all the way over to verse 38,
  • 00:03:34.060 --> 00:03:38.120
  • 'cause if I read it we'll be here the same time next week.
  • 00:03:38.130 --> 00:03:42.280
  • Verse 38, this is what Paul said.
  • 00:03:42.290 --> 00:03:46.020
  • "Let it be known to you therefore,
  • 00:03:46.030 --> 00:03:48.090
  • that through this man," the Lord Jesus, "forgiveness of sins is
  • 00:03:48.100 --> 00:03:53.000
  • proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed
  • 00:03:53.010 --> 00:03:58.130
  • from everything from which you could not be freed
  • 00:03:58.140 --> 00:04:06.010
  • by the law of Moses."
  • 00:04:06.020 --> 00:04:08.010
  • Go down to verse 44.
  • 00:04:08.020 --> 00:04:11.260
  • "The next Sabbath the whole city gathered
  • 00:04:11.270 --> 00:04:15.140
  • to hear the Word of the Lord.
  • 00:04:15.150 --> 00:04:17.220
  • But when the Jews saw the crowds,
  • 00:04:17.230 --> 00:04:19.180
  • they were filled with jealousy and they began to contradict
  • 00:04:19.190 --> 00:04:23.090
  • what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.
  • 00:04:23.100 --> 00:04:27.130
  • And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying,
  • 00:04:27.140 --> 00:04:30.030
  • 'It was necessary that the Word of God must
  • 00:04:30.040 --> 00:04:32.140
  • be spoken to you Jews first.
  • 00:04:32.150 --> 00:04:35.200
  • Since you now thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy
  • 00:04:35.210 --> 00:04:41.050
  • of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
  • 00:04:41.060 --> 00:04:45.190
  • For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, "I have made you
  • 00:04:45.200 --> 00:04:48.160
  • a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation
  • 00:04:48.170 --> 00:04:52.250
  • to the ends of the earth."'
  • 00:04:52.260 --> 00:04:56.030
  • And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing
  • 00:04:56.040 --> 00:04:59.280
  • and glorifying the Word of the Lord, and as many
  • 00:04:59.290 --> 00:05:03.090
  • as were appointed to eternal life believed.
  • 00:05:03.100 --> 00:05:06.110
  • And the Word of the Lord was spreading
  • 00:05:06.120 --> 00:05:08.010
  • throughout the whole region.
  • 00:05:08.020 --> 00:05:10.070
  • But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing
  • 00:05:10.080 --> 00:05:15.040
  • and the leading men of the city, and they stirred up persecution
  • 00:05:15.050 --> 00:05:20.120
  • against Paul and Barnabas,
  • 00:05:20.130 --> 00:05:22.130
  • and drove them out of their district.
  • 00:05:22.140 --> 00:05:26.220
  • But they shook off the dust from their feet against them
  • 00:05:26.230 --> 00:05:32.010
  • and went on to the town or the city of Iconium.
  • 00:05:32.020 --> 00:05:36.010
  • And the disciples were filled with joy in the Holy Spirit."
  • 00:05:36.020 --> 00:05:38.280
  • Now, chapter 14, "At Iconium they entered together into the
  • 00:05:38.290 --> 00:05:44.220
  • Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that
  • 00:05:44.230 --> 00:05:47.130
  • a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
  • 00:05:47.140 --> 00:05:51.060
  • But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles
  • 00:05:51.070 --> 00:05:55.270
  • and poisoned their minds against Paul and Barnabas.
  • 00:05:55.280 --> 00:06:01.130
  • So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly
  • 00:06:01.140 --> 00:06:05.100
  • for the Lord, who bore witness to the Word of his grace,
  • 00:06:05.110 --> 00:06:08.140
  • granting signs and wonders by their hands.
  • 00:06:08.150 --> 00:06:11.220
  • But the people of the city were divided; some sided
  • 00:06:11.230 --> 00:06:17.170
  • with the Jews and some sided with the apostles."
  • 00:06:17.180 --> 00:06:21.090
  • Go down to verse 8.
  • 00:06:21.100 --> 00:06:23.030
  • So, they move on to the town of Lystra.
  • 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:26.270
  • "Now at Lystra there was a man sitting
  • 00:06:26.280 --> 00:06:29.170
  • who could not use his feet.
  • 00:06:29.180 --> 00:06:32.040
  • He was crippled from birth and had never walked.
  • 00:06:32.050 --> 00:06:35.150
  • He listened to Paul speaking.
  • 00:06:35.160 --> 00:06:37.200
  • And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith
  • 00:06:37.210 --> 00:06:40.150
  • to be made well, he said in a loud voice,
  • 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:43.080
  • 'Stand upright on your feet.'
  • 00:06:43.090 --> 00:06:45.270
  • And so he sprang up and he began walking."
  • 00:06:45.280 --> 00:06:50.190
  • All right, let's go to verse 19, because he's now going to leave
  • 00:06:50.200 --> 00:06:54.240
  • Lystra and he's going to go to Derbe.
  • 00:06:54.250 --> 00:06:57.120
  • I'm going to show you in a minute.
  • 00:06:57.130 --> 00:06:59.090
  • "But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium," to Lystra,
  • 00:06:59.100 --> 00:07:06.110
  • "having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul
  • 00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:10.120
  • and they dragged him out of the city,
  • 00:07:10.130 --> 00:07:13.200
  • supposing that he was dead.
  • 00:07:13.210 --> 00:07:17.030
  • But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up, entered
  • 00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:20.080
  • the city, and on the next day he went with Barnabas to Derbe.
  • 00:07:20.090 --> 00:07:27.080
  • And when they had preached the gospel to that city and had made
  • 00:07:27.090 --> 00:07:31.130
  • many disciples," they did a u-turn and, "they returned to
  • 00:07:31.140 --> 00:07:37.050
  • Lystra and to Iconium and then to Pisidia in Antioch,
  • 00:07:37.060 --> 00:07:41.270
  • strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to
  • 00:07:41.280 --> 00:07:45.100
  • continue in the faith, and saying that through many
  • 00:07:45.110 --> 00:07:48.060
  • tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
  • 00:07:48.070 --> 00:07:50.210
  • And when they had appointed leaders for them in every
  • 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:53.070
  • church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord
  • 00:07:53.080 --> 00:07:56.030
  • in whom they had believed.
  • 00:07:56.040 --> 00:07:57.250
  • And so they passed through Pisidia down into Pamphylia."
  • 00:07:57.260 --> 00:08:03.010
  • Verse 25, "When they had spoken the word in Pergia--Perga,
  • 00:08:03.020 --> 00:08:09.030
  • they went down to Attalia," which was a port city right
  • 00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:14.050
  • on the Mediterranean Sea.
  • 00:08:14.060 --> 00:08:17.080
  • "And from there they sailed back to Antioch," in Syria,
  • 00:08:17.090 --> 00:08:22.100
  • "where they had been commended to the grace of God
  • 00:08:22.110 --> 00:08:24.190
  • for the work that they had fulfilled.
  • 00:08:24.200 --> 00:08:27.090
  • And so when they arrived, they gathered the church together,
  • 00:08:27.100 --> 00:08:30.050
  • they declared all that the Lord had done for them," and to the
  • 00:08:30.060 --> 00:08:35.290
  • Gentiles, and told them how that the Lord had opened a door
  • 00:08:36.000 --> 00:08:42.180
  • of faith so that they could share the love of Christ.
  • 00:08:42.190 --> 00:08:47.120
  • This is an amazing thing.
  • 00:08:47.130 --> 00:08:49.070
  • I want you to look over here with me.
  • 00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:53.180
  • So, here we have really the map of this extraordinary journey.
  • 00:08:53.190 --> 00:09:03.010
  • So, they came into this region here, stopping off in Perga,
  • 00:09:03.020 --> 00:09:08.040
  • and went straight up to Pisidia in Antioch.
  • 00:09:08.050 --> 00:09:13.180
  • Interesting place, Pisidia in Antioch.
  • 00:09:13.190 --> 00:09:16.170
  • You might say, "Well, what is there of that place right now?"
  • 00:09:16.180 --> 00:09:20.070
  • In about 300 A.D., it was destroyed by the Arabs
  • 00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:25.020
  • as a city, but it's a very interesting place here
  • 00:09:25.030 --> 00:09:29.190
  • and it was a very formidable place.
  • 00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:31.220
  • Very much part of the Roman colonial zone
  • 00:09:31.230 --> 00:09:37.160
  • and it was a very prominent area there.
  • 00:09:37.170 --> 00:09:40.080
  • But the thing about Pisidia in Antioch was that there was a
  • 00:09:40.090 --> 00:09:46.290
  • very large Jewish population and they had a big synagogue there.
  • 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:51.030
  • So, Paul made a beeline and he went into the synagogue,
  • 00:09:51.040 --> 00:09:54.210
  • and he began to talk about Jesus.
  • 00:09:54.220 --> 00:09:58.140
  • And he preached one of the most incredible messages.
  • 00:09:58.150 --> 00:10:03.120
  • And really, his message focused in on five major things.
  • 00:10:03.130 --> 00:10:09.240
  • Number one, he told everybody that God is for all people.
  • 00:10:09.250 --> 00:10:16.240
  • God is the God of all people.
  • 00:10:16.250 --> 00:10:19.130
  • Secondly, that God is the God of the prophets.
  • 00:10:19.140 --> 00:10:24.030
  • So, you read about Samuel, for example.
  • 00:10:24.040 --> 00:10:26.130
  • So, here's what Paul was saying.
  • 00:10:26.140 --> 00:10:28.150
  • He's saying, "Listen," to the Jews.
  • 00:10:28.160 --> 00:10:30.240
  • You don't have an exclusive corner on God.
  • 00:10:30.250 --> 00:10:33.270
  • God's for everybody.
  • 00:10:33.280 --> 00:10:36.280
  • He's not a Black God or a White God.
  • 00:10:36.290 --> 00:10:39.280
  • He's not a Chinese God. He's not a African God.
  • 00:10:39.290 --> 00:10:44.170
  • He's not an American God. He's for all of us.
  • 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:51.190
  • He died for all of us and he's the God of the prophets.
  • 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:55.180
  • Now, they all identified with the prophets.
  • 00:10:55.190 --> 00:10:57.270
  • So if you take, like, Samuel, you're not even saying,
  • 00:10:57.280 --> 00:11:00.220
  • "Listen up," when the prophets speak.
  • 00:11:00.230 --> 00:11:03.170
  • Don't pah-poo prophets of God.
  • 00:11:03.180 --> 00:11:07.050
  • He's the God of the prophets, but he's also--listen to this.
  • 00:11:07.060 --> 00:11:10.290
  • He's also very, very much the God
  • 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:13.070
  • and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:13.080 --> 00:11:16.070
  • Right here in Antioch, he took this same God
  • 00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:20.020
  • that he's talking about in a Jewish synagogue.
  • 00:11:20.030 --> 00:11:23.230
  • He's the God and Father of our Lord Jesus.
  • 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:25.280
  • He's the one.
  • 00:11:25.290 --> 00:11:28.220
  • That's how you identify God.
  • 00:11:28.230 --> 00:11:31.120
  • Ever had anybody ask you, "Well, who exactly is God?"
  • 00:11:31.130 --> 00:11:35.100
  • Well, God is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:35.110 --> 00:11:39.150
  • Right, he's not just any God and he's certainly not god
  • 00:11:39.160 --> 00:11:42.170
  • with a small G.
  • 00:11:42.180 --> 00:11:44.110
  • We're gonna come back to that in just a little while, okay?
  • 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:47.200
  • But then he went on and he said he's the God of salvation.
  • 00:11:47.210 --> 00:11:51.240
  • He's the one who brings salvation.
  • 00:11:51.250 --> 00:11:54.210
  • And if he brings salvation, number five,
  • 00:11:54.220 --> 00:11:56.270
  • he's the God of forgiveness and he's the God of all hope.
  • 00:11:56.280 --> 00:12:01.270
  • All right, let's go back to the map here.
  • 00:12:01.280 --> 00:12:03.190
  • Quick, chop chop, back to the map.
  • 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:06.070
  • All right, so there it is, Pisidia in Antioch.
  • 00:12:06.080 --> 00:12:09.060
  • He establishes this, and of course many of the people,
  • 00:12:09.070 --> 00:12:12.230
  • the Jewish people there, throw up their arms.
  • 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:15.110
  • They are--they're pretty miffed about this so they leave
  • 00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:19.160
  • and they go to Iconium.
  • 00:12:19.170 --> 00:12:21.060
  • Now, distance-wise, that's about 60 miles,
  • 00:12:21.070 --> 00:12:27.000
  • which is a long way back in those days, all right?
  • 00:12:27.010 --> 00:12:29.200
  • Didn't get in his Jaguar there and take a quick trip.
  • 00:12:29.210 --> 00:12:34.110
  • That's 60 miles.
  • 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:36.010
  • The thing about this here, this was very much in the market
  • 00:12:36.020 --> 00:12:40.170
  • route of Asia, so the road here back
  • 00:12:40.180 --> 00:12:43.220
  • in Paul's time was excellent.
  • 00:12:43.230 --> 00:12:47.100
  • It's reputedly one of the better highways
  • 00:12:47.110 --> 00:12:50.070
  • that the Romans had built.
  • 00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:51.290
  • So, he and Barnabas basically flee out of here.
  • 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:55.110
  • They get to Iconium.
  • 00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:57.030
  • They're not in Iconium all that long
  • 00:12:57.040 --> 00:12:59.070
  • because they just get thrown out of Iconium.
  • 00:12:59.080 --> 00:13:02.090
  • So, three things happened in Lystra.
  • 00:13:02.100 --> 00:13:05.270
  • You ready?
  • 00:13:05.280 --> 00:13:07.190
  • Number one, a great healing takes place.
  • 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:11.150
  • Number two, they are hailed as gods.
  • 00:13:11.160 --> 00:13:19.290
  • The gods have arrived.
  • 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:22.270
  • In fact, they considered Barnabas to be Zeus.
  • 00:13:22.280 --> 00:13:28.090
  • Why, I don't know.
  • 00:13:28.100 --> 00:13:29.260
  • Boom! Said, "Man, you must be Zeus."
  • 00:13:29.270 --> 00:13:33.060
  • And they considered Paul to be Hermes.
  • 00:13:33.070 --> 00:13:36.230
  • He was this great god who was the emissary,
  • 00:13:36.240 --> 00:13:39.240
  • the representative, the messenger of the gods,
  • 00:13:39.250 --> 00:13:44.120
  • who was the one who was assigned to draw boundaries.
  • 00:13:44.130 --> 00:13:48.110
  • So, here they heal in the name of the Lord Jesus, the whole
  • 00:13:48.120 --> 00:13:50.280
  • town goes ballistic and says, "Zeus and Hermes
  • 00:13:50.290 --> 00:13:54.210
  • have come to visit us."
  • 00:13:54.220 --> 00:13:57.190
  • And what happens in the third place?
  • 00:13:57.200 --> 00:13:59.130
  • As a result of them saying, "Hold on a minute.
  • 00:13:59.140 --> 00:14:03.140
  • Don't call us gods, 'cause we're not.
  • 00:14:03.150 --> 00:14:05.200
  • Don't worship us, because we're not.
  • 00:14:05.210 --> 00:14:07.150
  • You need to worship Jesus immediately."
  • 00:14:07.160 --> 00:14:10.110
  • They begin to get harassed, hounded, beaten up, thrown out.
  • 00:14:10.120 --> 00:14:18.150
  • In fact, it gets so bad--back to the map, boom, just like that.
  • 00:14:18.160 --> 00:14:23.270
  • It gets so bad here in Lystra, they send out the horses.
  • 00:14:23.280 --> 00:14:28.020
  • They said, "Come on, everybody.
  • 00:14:28.030 --> 00:14:29.270
  • We gotta get these guys."
  • 00:14:29.280 --> 00:14:31.180
  • So, they get reinforcements coming from Pisidia in Antioch,
  • 00:14:31.190 --> 00:14:35.120
  • and also from Iconium, and they all descend on Lystra.
  • 00:14:35.130 --> 00:14:39.120
  • They bring in all the troops and they hound
  • 00:14:39.130 --> 00:14:42.160
  • these guys out of town.
  • 00:14:42.170 --> 00:14:44.110
  • So, they leave there and they go down here to Derbe,
  • 00:14:44.120 --> 00:14:46.250
  • or to Darby as they would stay in Great England.
  • 00:14:46.260 --> 00:14:50.180
  • Down here they'd go to Derbe.
  • 00:14:50.190 --> 00:14:53.110
  • And right there in Derbe, which by the way
  • 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:56.170
  • is about 60 miles again.
  • 00:14:56.180 --> 00:14:59.020
  • You've got an approximate 60 mile journey here.
  • 00:14:59.030 --> 00:15:02.170
  • Three things happen in Derbe.
  • 00:15:02.180 --> 00:15:04.170
  • First of all, God says, "You've gone far enough.
  • 00:15:04.180 --> 00:15:08.150
  • It's time to turn around. By the way, God does that.
  • 00:15:08.160 --> 00:15:13.150
  • Did you know that?
  • 00:15:13.160 --> 00:15:15.060
  • When you serve the Lord, God doesn't necessarily say
  • 00:15:15.070 --> 00:15:20.100
  • you're gonna do that all your life.
  • 00:15:20.110 --> 00:15:24.110
  • When you go on a journey, it doesn't mean to say
  • 00:15:24.120 --> 00:15:26.260
  • you're never gonna stop traveling.
  • 00:15:26.270 --> 00:15:30.250
  • Right here in Derbe, God gave them word that's where they
  • 00:15:30.260 --> 00:15:35.020
  • turned around, so that's the first thing that happened.
  • 00:15:35.030 --> 00:15:38.250
  • Secondly, they went back again to Lystra and to Iconium,
  • 00:15:38.260 --> 00:15:43.240
  • and then back up to Antioch, Pisidia in Antioch.
  • 00:15:43.250 --> 00:15:48.030
  • And while they did, they kept appointing leaders.
  • 00:15:48.040 --> 00:15:52.220
  • By the way, in--as a believer today, everything you do needs
  • 00:15:52.230 --> 00:15:58.000
  • to be punctuated by appointing other people to step in
  • 00:15:58.010 --> 00:16:03.050
  • and to carry on the work.
  • 00:16:03.060 --> 00:16:06.250
  • It's called mentoring, raising up leaders.
  • 00:16:06.260 --> 00:16:10.030
  • One of the things I'm so grateful for in our church
  • 00:16:10.040 --> 00:16:16.100
  • is the incredible emphasis that we and so many others
  • 00:16:16.110 --> 00:16:20.290
  • like us place on the next generation.
  • 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:24.010
  • We couldn't be engaged in a more important work.
  • 00:16:24.020 --> 00:16:28.020
  • Raise up. Raise up leaders.
  • 00:16:28.030 --> 00:16:30.040
  • Raise up young leaders. Appoint leaders.
  • 00:16:30.050 --> 00:16:32.210
  • Get people to keep doing the work.
  • 00:16:32.220 --> 00:16:35.070
  • You take a church like this just filled with spiritual leaders.
  • 00:16:35.080 --> 00:16:39.170
  • That's what they did.
  • 00:16:39.180 --> 00:16:41.050
  • And then the third thing they did, when they did a u-turn
  • 00:16:41.060 --> 00:16:43.280
  • here, going back to Lystra, and Iconium, and Antioch,
  • 00:16:43.290 --> 00:16:48.120
  • was they prayed and fasted.
  • 00:16:48.130 --> 00:16:50.040
  • It punctuated everything they did.
  • 00:16:50.050 --> 00:16:52.090
  • So, now they turn around from Derbe.
  • 00:16:52.100 --> 00:16:56.070
  • They go back to Lystra. They go back to Iconium.
  • 00:16:56.080 --> 00:16:59.090
  • They go back to Antioch. They travel through Pamphylia.
  • 00:16:59.100 --> 00:17:03.010
  • They go to Attalia, get on board a ship, and vroom,
  • 00:17:03.020 --> 00:17:07.240
  • all the way back to Antioch in Syria.
  • 00:17:07.250 --> 00:17:12.050
  • "Hello, everybody. We're back.
  • 00:17:12.060 --> 00:17:15.000
  • We've come back. We're here.
  • 00:17:15.010 --> 00:17:17.100
  • Get out the good food.
  • 00:17:17.110 --> 00:17:18.270
  • Peanut butter sandwiches, whatever it is, but we're back.
  • 00:17:18.280 --> 00:17:21.150
  • We've come back. We're here.
  • 00:17:21.160 --> 00:17:22.270
  • We wanna let you know."
  • 00:17:22.280 --> 00:17:24.210
  • And when they got back, they did three things.
  • 00:17:24.220 --> 00:17:26.100
  • Number one, they gathered the church together.
  • 00:17:26.110 --> 00:17:30.010
  • That's the first thing they did.
  • 00:17:30.020 --> 00:17:32.060
  • Number two, they reported all the things that God had done.
  • 00:17:32.070 --> 00:17:37.180
  • They shared the blessings.
  • 00:17:37.190 --> 00:17:40.210
  • And number three, they got geared up to go again.
  • 00:17:40.220 --> 00:17:46.200
  • I'm telling you, it's a beautiful picture.
  • 00:17:46.210 --> 00:17:49.230
  • All right, so let's just take a look at this one more time.
  • 00:17:49.240 --> 00:17:53.040
  • This is where it began, Antioch in Syria.
  • 00:17:53.050 --> 00:17:56.090
  • They come all the way here to Cyprus.
  • 00:17:56.100 --> 00:17:59.040
  • They go from Cyprus, up here to Antioch Pisidia, down to
  • 00:17:59.050 --> 00:18:03.240
  • Iconium, Lystra, Derbe.
  • 00:18:03.250 --> 00:18:06.070
  • God says that's enough.
  • 00:18:06.080 --> 00:18:07.260
  • They retrace their steps all the way back here through Pamphylia,
  • 00:18:07.270 --> 00:18:11.090
  • to Attalia, catch a ship all the way back to their home church.
  • 00:18:11.100 --> 00:18:18.200
  • And there it is they gather those amazing people.
  • 00:18:18.210 --> 00:18:23.110
  • Those are the people who supported the budget.
  • 00:18:23.120 --> 00:18:27.220
  • Those are the people who prayed.
  • 00:18:27.230 --> 00:18:30.140
  • Those are the people who sent out.
  • 00:18:30.150 --> 00:18:32.050
  • Those are the people who were fasting for them.
  • 00:18:32.060 --> 00:18:35.230
  • Those are the people.
  • 00:18:35.240 --> 00:18:37.210
  • It's an amazing thing.
  • 00:18:37.220 --> 00:18:39.140
  • So, what can we say about the call of God to go?
  • 00:18:39.150 --> 00:18:48.130
  • How can you bring something like this together?
  • 00:18:48.140 --> 00:18:52.020
  • Well, I'm going to just share with you five things that are
  • 00:18:52.030 --> 00:18:55.060
  • involved in the call of God to go,
  • 00:18:55.070 --> 00:18:57.030
  • based upon what God is showing us through this man's life.
  • 00:18:57.040 --> 00:19:04.020
  • It involves, first of all, sticking.
  • 00:19:04.030 --> 00:19:08.220
  • Sticking. Sticking what?
  • 00:19:08.230 --> 00:19:12.100
  • Sticking to the truth.
  • 00:19:12.110 --> 00:19:18.090
  • One thing I think we've discovered already is that they
  • 00:19:18.100 --> 00:19:23.020
  • set out from Antioch, they went through a lot of things,
  • 00:19:23.030 --> 00:19:26.220
  • didn't they?
  • 00:19:26.230 --> 00:19:29.070
  • Endured a lot of things.
  • 00:19:29.080 --> 00:19:31.120
  • Traveled a long mile.
  • 00:19:31.130 --> 00:19:33.250
  • One can just imagine all the different impulses, and input,
  • 00:19:33.260 --> 00:19:38.030
  • and the ups and the downs, and the disappointments,
  • 00:19:38.040 --> 00:19:41.170
  • and the joys, and the sorrows, but they stuck to the truth.
  • 00:19:41.180 --> 00:19:45.220
  • They didn't swerve.
  • 00:19:45.230 --> 00:19:47.110
  • They didn't take a detour.
  • 00:19:47.120 --> 00:19:49.060
  • So, there it is.
  • 00:19:49.070 --> 00:19:51.270
  • The call of God to go involves sticking to the truth.
  • 00:19:51.280 --> 00:20:02.130
  • It's very difficult when you're born and raised in something
  • 00:20:02.140 --> 00:20:06.190
  • and then God says, "Now, wait a minute.
  • 00:20:06.200 --> 00:20:10.250
  • Jesus is the one."
  • 00:20:10.260 --> 00:20:13.180
  • You can't add someone else or something else.
  • 00:20:13.190 --> 00:20:17.020
  • You can't even add the church.
  • 00:20:17.030 --> 00:20:19.120
  • It's Jesus.
  • 00:20:19.130 --> 00:20:21.000
  • Sticking, that's the first thing.
  • 00:20:21.010 --> 00:20:22.240
  • Number two, anticipating.
  • 00:20:22.250 --> 00:20:26.090
  • The call of God to go involves anticipating.
  • 00:20:26.100 --> 00:20:31.080
  • Anticipating what? You name it.
  • 00:20:31.090 --> 00:20:37.030
  • How 'bout anticipating opposition?
  • 00:20:37.040 --> 00:20:42.220
  • You know already, and we just on the first journey, it seems to
  • 00:20:42.230 --> 00:20:46.160
  • me these people took two steps and opposition appeared.
  • 00:20:46.170 --> 00:20:55.200
  • Anticipate.
  • 00:21:00.280 --> 00:21:05.240
  • Part of studying God's Word is to allow us to be properly
  • 00:21:05.250 --> 00:21:11.050
  • prepared so that we can anticipate the world
  • 00:21:11.060 --> 00:21:17.070
  • in which we live, the environment.
  • 00:21:17.080 --> 00:21:23.120
  • You know, I'm very privileged, like many,
  • 00:21:23.130 --> 00:21:25.230
  • to help people who are getting married.
  • 00:21:25.240 --> 00:21:32.060
  • It's a very happy time.
  • 00:21:32.070 --> 00:21:34.180
  • We've got some beautiful weddings coming up this summer.
  • 00:21:34.190 --> 00:21:38.270
  • It's a beautiful time.
  • 00:21:38.280 --> 00:21:40.210
  • Do you know, one of our responsibilities as fathers, as
  • 00:21:40.220 --> 00:21:44.000
  • mothers, let alone as pastors or counselors, is not just to look
  • 00:21:44.010 --> 00:21:49.260
  • at a young couple who are not paying attention
  • 00:21:49.270 --> 00:21:52.080
  • 'cause they're looking at each other all the time and to say,
  • 00:21:52.090 --> 00:21:55.250
  • "You know, life is just wonderful.
  • 00:21:55.260 --> 00:21:59.060
  • You just go and, man, just forget it, man.
  • 00:21:59.070 --> 00:22:02.160
  • You're getting married next Saturday and I'm gonna tell you
  • 00:22:02.170 --> 00:22:05.100
  • just go out there and just--oh, it's just wonderful."
  • 00:22:05.110 --> 00:22:09.050
  • And some of you are looking at me saying, "Mmm hmm."
  • 00:22:09.060 --> 00:22:14.000
  • Reality is they need also to be fortified
  • 00:22:14.010 --> 00:22:18.090
  • and taught to anticipate, right?
  • 00:22:18.100 --> 00:22:22.180
  • So, anticipating.
  • 00:22:22.190 --> 00:22:24.010
  • Number three, raising.
  • 00:22:24.020 --> 00:22:26.260
  • Sticking, anticipating, raising is the third operative.
  • 00:22:26.270 --> 00:22:31.290
  • Because we find repeatedly, and we'll continue to find this
  • 00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:35.000
  • right throughout these journeys, it was almost like Paul and
  • 00:22:35.010 --> 00:22:41.100
  • Barnabas just had to be about the business of raising up
  • 00:22:41.110 --> 00:22:45.180
  • elders, and leaders, and spiritual men and women who were
  • 00:22:45.190 --> 00:22:50.130
  • going to be able to stand firm and continue to do the work.
  • 00:22:50.140 --> 00:22:59.170
  • We are passionate about that.
  • 00:22:59.180 --> 00:23:04.100
  • There ought to be hardly ever, if ever, a time that the church
  • 00:23:04.110 --> 00:23:11.250
  • should ever do anything or say anything without saying,
  • 00:23:11.260 --> 00:23:18.060
  • "Does this have tomorrow's generation in mind?"
  • 00:23:18.070 --> 00:23:26.260
  • Are we about that business?
  • 00:23:26.270 --> 00:23:29.060
  • Are we raising up, do we celebrate spiritual leadership?
  • 00:23:29.070 --> 00:23:32.260
  • I celebrate with you. I celebrate your leadership.
  • 00:23:32.270 --> 00:23:37.200
  • Thanking God for you.
  • 00:23:37.210 --> 00:23:39.150
  • Sticking, anticipating, raising.
  • 00:23:39.160 --> 00:23:42.260
  • The third--the fourth one is praying and fasting.
  • 00:23:42.270 --> 00:23:47.170
  • Every time they stopped, they seemingly went into times
  • 00:23:47.180 --> 00:23:51.240
  • of prayer and fasting.
  • 00:23:51.250 --> 00:23:55.180
  • Their talking with the Lord was so important.
  • 00:23:55.190 --> 00:24:01.000
  • You know, Paul--you know, you look at what happened
  • 00:24:01.010 --> 00:24:05.090
  • in the call of God to go, this remarkable thing that he did
  • 00:24:05.100 --> 00:24:11.070
  • honoring the Lord, this servant of the Lord, sticking to the
  • 00:24:11.080 --> 00:24:14.260
  • truth, anticipating the world that he was stepping into,
  • 00:24:14.270 --> 00:24:21.050
  • raising up leaders, praying, fasting.
  • 00:24:21.060 --> 00:24:25.190
  • There was one more thing, thanking.
  • 00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:29.120
  • Thanking, thanking.
  • 00:24:29.130 --> 00:24:33.140
  • It's like everywhere he went, he was always sure
  • 00:24:33.150 --> 00:24:35.140
  • to say thank you to the Lord.
  • 00:24:35.150 --> 00:24:40.200
  • You know, when he got back to his home church and his home
  • 00:24:40.210 --> 00:24:44.220
  • environment in Antioch of Syria, what'd he do?
  • 00:24:44.230 --> 00:24:49.160
  • He brought this incredible group of people together,
  • 00:24:49.170 --> 00:24:52.270
  • and he shared blessings, and he began to gear up
  • 00:24:52.280 --> 00:24:56.050
  • for what was next, and all of it was in an attitude and
  • 00:24:56.060 --> 00:25:02.030
  • an aura of just thankfulness.
  • 00:25:02.040 --> 00:25:04.040
  • Lord, thank you for letting me go.
  • 00:25:04.050 --> 00:25:06.130
  • Thank you for what you've done. Thank you for your blessings.
  • 00:25:06.140 --> 00:25:09.140
  • Thank you for your promises.
  • 00:25:09.150 --> 00:25:12.170
  • 00:25:12.180 --> 00:25:16.200
  • male: So much to be thankful for, and I know Dr. Don would
  • 00:25:16.210 --> 00:25:18.270
  • remind us that the most important thing to have
  • 00:25:18.280 --> 00:25:21.030
  • gratitude for is the fact that Jesus went to the cross for us.
  • 00:25:21.040 --> 00:25:24.240
  • Today, are you ready to give your heart to Jesus Christ?
  • 00:25:24.250 --> 00:25:27.250
  • Are you ready to surrender to him completely and totally?
  • 00:25:27.260 --> 00:25:30.280
  • You can just start with a simple prayer like this.
  • 00:25:30.290 --> 00:25:33.020
  • Lord God, I realize I've messed up.
  • 00:25:33.030 --> 00:25:35.170
  • We've all messed up.
  • 00:25:35.180 --> 00:25:37.040
  • But I also realize you went to the Cross of Calvary for me,
  • 00:25:37.050 --> 00:25:40.070
  • to save me from my sins.
  • 00:25:40.080 --> 00:25:42.030
  • Change me from the inside out.
  • 00:25:42.040 --> 00:25:43.170
  • In Jesus's name I pray, amen.
  • 00:25:43.180 --> 00:25:45.240
  • If God has begun a work in you, it's not about the right words
  • 00:25:45.250 --> 00:25:48.130
  • to say, it's about the attitude of the heart.
  • 00:25:48.140 --> 00:25:50.110
  • Let us walk alongside you, put resources in your hands.
  • 00:25:50.120 --> 00:25:53.130
  • So, give us call.
  • 00:25:53.140 --> 00:25:54.250
  • That number on your screen, jot it down, store it in your cell.
  • 00:25:54.260 --> 00:25:57.180
  • Twenty-four hours a day, we'd love to pray with you
  • 00:25:57.190 --> 00:25:59.210
  • and for you, and give you great resources
  • 00:25:59.220 --> 00:26:01.150
  • that'll help you grow in Christ.
  • 00:26:01.160 --> 00:26:03.230
  • Just know we're grateful to be the encouraging Word of God
  • 00:26:03.240 --> 00:26:06.190
  • in your life.
  • 00:26:06.200 --> 00:26:08.190
  • Don: Hello, my dear friends.
  • 00:26:08.200 --> 00:26:10.120
  • I want to speak to you personally today
  • 00:26:10.130 --> 00:26:13.070
  • from my heart to yours.
  • 00:26:13.080 --> 00:26:15.170
  • I don't think there is ever a better or more important time
  • 00:26:15.180 --> 00:26:19.240
  • for us to respond to our world by standing up
  • 00:26:19.250 --> 00:26:24.000
  • for righteousness.
  • 00:26:24.010 --> 00:26:25.200
  • We're living today in a day and age in the crossfire of multiple
  • 00:26:25.210 --> 00:26:30.140
  • cross currents, that you and I know full well
  • 00:26:30.150 --> 00:26:33.150
  • are challenging the very fabric of our faith.
  • 00:26:33.160 --> 00:26:38.010
  • We must stand strong in our convictions.
  • 00:26:38.020 --> 00:26:41.170
  • "The Encouraging Word" broadcast ministry is doing just that, and
  • 00:26:41.180 --> 00:26:45.200
  • we are supported by viewers and listeners just like you.
  • 00:26:45.210 --> 00:26:49.160
  • We wanna make a difference in our world for Christ.
  • 00:26:49.170 --> 00:26:53.130
  • So please, call the number on your screen and request my
  • 00:26:53.140 --> 00:26:57.090
  • life-changing message, "Standing Strong in the Cross Currents."

  • Your financial support enables us to continue
  • 00:27:08.210 --> 00:27:12.130
  • to share God's truth with our searching world.

  • 00:27:16.140 --> 00:27:26.000
