  • It's one of the reasons people look at horoscopes today is
  • 00:00:12.180 --> 00:00:15.150
  • to find out what the future holds.
  • 00:00:15.160 --> 00:00:19.210
  • So, what's next?
  • 00:00:19.220 --> 00:00:21.170
  • Well, I would ask what's next for you.
  • 00:00:22.070 --> 00:00:26.090
  • The book of Revelation predicts the future.
  • 00:00:26.100 --> 00:00:31.150
  • The more you read it, you'll discover God's plan
  • 00:00:31.160 --> 00:00:33.280
  • for your future.
  • 00:00:33.290 --> 00:00:36.270
  • This is the only book of the Bible that has such a direct
  • 00:00:36.280 --> 00:00:40.070
  • and unique promise of blessing to those who read it,
  • 00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:44.050
  • hear it, and do it.
  • 00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:47.130
  • This is God's eventual unfolding revelation for how it will
  • 00:00:47.140 --> 00:00:51.080
  • all end.
  • 00:00:51.090 --> 00:00:52.200
  • Some of you desperately need this book.
  • 00:00:52.210 --> 00:00:56.060
  • Skip: Jesus Christ, your Savior, is coming back.
  • 00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:01.160
  • And even Jesus promised his disciples,
  • 00:01:01.170 --> 00:01:03.290
  • "I am going away to prepare a place for you.
  • 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:06.110
  • And if I go, I will come again and receive you to myself,
  • 00:01:06.120 --> 00:01:11.130
  • that where I am, there you may be also."
  • 00:01:11.140 --> 00:01:13.190
  • So, you can take heart as you look forward to the coming
  • 00:01:14.110 --> 00:01:17.210
  • of the Lord.
  • 00:01:17.220 --> 00:01:19.030
  • Boy, it's been exciting to be here in Israel,
  • 00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:20.280
  • and especially in the city of Jerusalem.
  • 00:01:20.290 --> 00:01:23.070
  • I get amped up just to walk around the streets of Jerusalem,
  • 00:01:23.080 --> 00:01:26.170
  • and hear the buzz, and see the sights,
  • 00:01:26.180 --> 00:01:29.180
  • and think of all the Scriptures that speak about
  • 00:01:29.190 --> 00:01:32.240
  • this incredible place.
  • 00:01:32.250 --> 00:01:35.030
  • But the question is for you, are you ready?
  • 00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:38.130
  • You've heard these things.
  • 00:01:38.140 --> 00:01:40.000
  • Some of you have heard these things all your life,
  • 00:01:40.010 --> 00:01:42.030
  • you've grown up in church, but you haven't received Christ yet.
  • 00:01:42.040 --> 00:01:45.100
  • You haven't asked him to be your Lord, your Master.
  • 00:01:45.110 --> 00:01:48.210
  • But you have that choice right now to place your faith in
  • 00:01:48.220 --> 00:01:52.040
  • Jesus Christ, who came to this place and died for your sins,
  • 00:01:52.050 --> 00:01:57.270
  • and rose bodily from the grave, and ascended into glory,
  • 00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:02.090
  • and one day is coming back.
  • 00:02:02.100 --> 00:02:03.280
  • Will you be ready for him?
  • 00:02:03.290 --> 00:02:05.150
  • Skip: Do you ever think about your own death?
  • 00:02:06.270 --> 00:02:09.150
  • If you say no, you're not alone.
  • 00:02:09.160 --> 00:02:11.020
  • Most Americans don't think much about their own death.
  • 00:02:11.030 --> 00:02:14.060
  • In fact, a CBS poll revealed that most Americans spend
  • 00:02:14.070 --> 00:02:19.260
  • very little, if any time at all, thinking about their own death.
  • 00:02:19.270 --> 00:02:27.100
  • In that poll, 3 out of 4 Americans believe in either
  • 00:02:27.110 --> 00:02:34.000
  • heaven or in hell, that's 75%, 66% believe in both heaven
  • 00:02:34.010 --> 00:02:42.080
  • and hell.
  • 00:02:42.090 --> 00:02:44.210
  • What's most fascinating to me is that of those who say they
  • 00:02:44.220 --> 00:02:48.250
  • believe in heaven and hell, 82% expect that they will end up
  • 00:02:48.260 --> 00:02:53.280
  • in heaven at the end of their lives, whereas only 2%
  • 00:02:53.290 --> 00:02:58.080
  • actually state they believe they would end up in hell.
  • 00:02:58.090 --> 00:03:05.100
  • It is a difficult thing to think about.
  • 00:03:05.110 --> 00:03:07.140
  • It's not an easy or palatable subject to talk about.
  • 00:03:07.150 --> 00:03:11.130
  • "Death, why should I do that? I'm too busy living my life."
  • 00:03:11.140 --> 00:03:15.230
  • However, there is a growing trend of people gathering
  • 00:03:15.240 --> 00:03:20.040
  • together to face that inevitable topic of their own death.
  • 00:03:20.050 --> 00:03:26.000
  • And I think it's a good thing to talk about,
  • 00:03:26.010 --> 00:03:27.250
  • I think it's a good thing to think about because when we ask
  • 00:03:27.260 --> 00:03:30.160
  • the question what's next, that might be the answer
  • 00:03:30.170 --> 00:03:37.010
  • for some of us, because we don't know
  • 00:03:37.020 --> 00:03:39.040
  • when or where death could happen.
  • 00:03:39.050 --> 00:03:44.210
  • Well, Revelation chapter 20 is what I call life boiled down
  • 00:03:44.220 --> 00:03:49.110
  • its irreducible minimum.
  • 00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:51.210
  • It's the smallest common denominator.
  • 00:03:51.220 --> 00:03:54.130
  • It's a set of experiences that are common to everyone.
  • 00:03:54.140 --> 00:03:59.040
  • When life is stripped down to its bare essentials,
  • 00:03:59.050 --> 00:04:02.270
  • when everything else is taken away,
  • 00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:04.220
  • every other experience, this is what you have left.
  • 00:04:04.230 --> 00:04:09.080
  • We all live, we all die, we will all be raised to be evaluated.
  • 00:04:09.090 --> 00:04:16.020
  • That's life boiled down to its basic components.
  • 00:04:16.030 --> 00:04:19.150
  • Physical life, followed by death,
  • 00:04:19.160 --> 00:04:23.000
  • followed by a resurrection.
  • 00:04:23.010 --> 00:04:27.060
  • Now, it might help for you to understand that when the Bible
  • 00:04:27.070 --> 00:04:30.020
  • uses the term "life," there are one of three words that it uses.
  • 00:04:30.030 --> 00:04:37.150
  • See, we only have one word to describe it,
  • 00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:39.250
  • so it's translated when we read it in the Bible life.
  • 00:04:39.260 --> 00:04:43.170
  • But in the Greek language in the New Testament,
  • 00:04:43.180 --> 00:04:45.150
  • there are three different words.
  • 00:04:45.160 --> 00:04:47.020
  • Listen to them all.
  • 00:04:47.030 --> 00:04:48.120
  • Number one is the word "bios," or if you want it pronounce it
  • 00:04:48.130 --> 00:04:51.040
  • bios because it's where we get the term "biology."
  • 00:04:51.050 --> 00:04:57.010
  • And that term "bios" is a word that references biological,
  • 00:04:57.020 --> 00:05:02.200
  • physical life.
  • 00:05:02.210 --> 00:05:04.200
  • It is life focused on the externals, which is,
  • 00:05:04.210 --> 00:05:09.140
  • by the way, where more people, most people spend
  • 00:05:09.150 --> 00:05:13.030
  • their attention,
  • 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:14.140
  • their energy, and their money.
  • 00:05:14.150 --> 00:05:16.180
  • How do I look?
  • 00:05:16.190 --> 00:05:19.030
  • A poll asked a group of people, "If you could change one thing
  • 00:05:19.040 --> 00:05:22.290
  • about your life, what would it be?"
  • 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.260
  • The most common answer, my appearance.
  • 00:05:25.270 --> 00:05:30.100
  • We want to change the way we look,
  • 00:05:30.110 --> 00:05:32.250
  • body weight, hair style, the way our face has a certain feature,
  • 00:05:32.260 --> 00:05:38.140
  • or whatever it might be.
  • 00:05:38.150 --> 00:05:40.020
  • It's appearance.
  • 00:05:40.030 --> 00:05:41.190
  • There are some people that live their lives like that.
  • 00:05:41.200 --> 00:05:43.180
  • They go round, and round, and round going through all
  • 00:05:43.190 --> 00:05:45.230
  • the same routines, not really giving thought to much else.
  • 00:05:45.240 --> 00:05:51.130
  • That's the word "bios", life, biologically external life.
  • 00:05:51.140 --> 00:05:58.030
  • But there's a second word used to describe life in the Bible.
  • 00:05:58.040 --> 00:06:02.170
  • It's the term "psuche".
  • 00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:04.270
  • Psuche is where we get our word "psychiatry" or "psychology."
  • 00:06:04.280 --> 00:06:10.190
  • This is the inner life.
  • 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:12.250
  • This refers to the personality, it's what we think.
  • 00:06:12.260 --> 00:06:16.250
  • And Jesus used this term when he said,
  • 00:06:16.260 --> 00:06:19.000
  • "If you want to save your life, you must lose your life,
  • 00:06:19.010 --> 00:06:24.280
  • you must surrender your life."
  • 00:06:24.290 --> 00:06:28.040
  • So you see, you can be alive physically,
  • 00:06:28.050 --> 00:06:32.140
  • but tormented mentally.
  • 00:06:32.150 --> 00:06:35.100
  • You go through all the routines, you had a nice meal,
  • 00:06:35.110 --> 00:06:37.270
  • everything's good today, but there's no real peace of mind.
  • 00:06:37.280 --> 00:06:42.140
  • Now, listen to the third term, and that's important because
  • 00:06:42.150 --> 00:06:45.120
  • it's a term that is mentioned here in the text.
  • 00:06:45.130 --> 00:06:49.200
  • It is not the term "bios," it is not the term "psyche," it is
  • 00:06:49.210 --> 00:06:52.160
  • the term "zoe" for life, zoe.
  • 00:06:52.170 --> 00:06:57.130
  • Zoe is a theological term.
  • 00:06:57.140 --> 00:07:00.260
  • Zoe is a term that shifts the focus off of the earthbound
  • 00:07:00.270 --> 00:07:05.140
  • and on to the eternal.
  • 00:07:05.150 --> 00:07:07.180
  • And by the way, the Bible uses that term 143 times
  • 00:07:07.190 --> 00:07:12.190
  • in the New Testament.
  • 00:07:12.200 --> 00:07:14.190
  • When you think of life, when it says eternal life
  • 00:07:14.200 --> 00:07:19.080
  • or everlasting life, it is the word "zoe."
  • 00:07:19.090 --> 00:07:22.140
  • By the way, it doesn't just mean to live on and on and
  • 00:07:22.150 --> 00:07:24.140
  • on in the future.
  • 00:07:24.150 --> 00:07:26.050
  • It's rather a quality of life that we enjoy now
  • 00:07:26.060 --> 00:07:32.110
  • and into the future.
  • 00:07:32.120 --> 00:07:33.290
  • Jesus said, "Whoever believes in me,
  • 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:37.000
  • hears my words, and believes the one who sent me,
  • 00:07:37.010 --> 00:07:39.240
  • has," present tense, "has everlasting life."
  • 00:07:39.250 --> 00:07:47.000
  • Now, look at verse 15, "Anyone found not written
  • 00:07:47.010 --> 00:07:50.000
  • in the book of life."
  • 00:07:50.010 --> 00:07:53.010
  • You see that term "life?"
  • 00:07:53.020 --> 00:07:54.110
  • That's the word "zoe," not bios, not pysche,
  • 00:07:54.120 --> 00:07:58.020
  • but zoe, the book of life.
  • 00:07:58.030 --> 00:08:03.120
  • How does this kind of life happen?
  • 00:08:03.130 --> 00:08:06.260
  • Jesus told Nicodemus new life happens by a new birth.
  • 00:08:06.270 --> 00:08:14.110
  • Jesus said you have to be born again, right?
  • 00:08:14.120 --> 00:08:18.060
  • Now, I've had so many people say,
  • 00:08:18.070 --> 00:08:19.160
  • "Well, you know, I am a Christian,
  • 00:08:19.170 --> 00:08:22.010
  • but I'm not one of those born again ones."
  • 00:08:22.020 --> 00:08:28.040
  • "Is there any other kind?"
  • 00:08:28.050 --> 00:08:31.280
  • "Oh yes, you know, there's many denominations,
  • 00:08:31.290 --> 00:08:34.070
  • but then there's the born again kind."
  • 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:36.140
  • No, do you know that no one is in heaven nor ever will be in
  • 00:08:36.150 --> 00:08:41.210
  • heaven who's not born again?
  • 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:44.090
  • That's what Jesus said, "Unless you are born again,
  • 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:46.120
  • you will never see the kingdom of God."
  • 00:08:46.130 --> 00:08:52.020
  • So, it's not a brand of Christian belief,
  • 00:08:52.030 --> 00:08:55.060
  • it is Christian belief.
  • 00:08:55.070 --> 00:08:57.210
  • And new birth is what leads to this new life, this zoe.
  • 00:08:57.220 --> 00:09:01.230
  • So, here's the question I have to ask you.
  • 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:03.200
  • I know you're all alive, but what kind of life do you have?
  • 00:09:03.210 --> 00:09:09.130
  • What are you enjoying?
  • 00:09:09.140 --> 00:09:10.280
  • I know you have biological life, I can see that,
  • 00:09:10.290 --> 00:09:15.050
  • but what about mental life?
  • 00:09:15.060 --> 00:09:18.050
  • What's going on on the inside? Do you have peace of mind?
  • 00:09:18.060 --> 00:09:20.290
  • And more than that, do you have the spiritual component of life?
  • 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:23.250
  • Are you a processionary caterpillar,
  • 00:09:23.260 --> 00:09:25.260
  • going round and round, up and down?
  • 00:09:25.270 --> 00:09:28.070
  • Go to work, go home, breathe, eat, nice meal,
  • 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:30.070
  • happy time, and I just keep it going?
  • 00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:35.100
  • Or is there something else, another component?
  • 00:09:35.110 --> 00:09:38.180
  • Everyone lives.
  • 00:09:38.190 --> 00:09:40.080
  • Second basic truth, everyone dies.
  • 00:09:40.090 --> 00:09:43.120
  • I know I'm sounding elementary again,
  • 00:09:43.130 --> 00:09:45.060
  • but remember that poll that I quoted at the beginning,
  • 00:09:45.070 --> 00:09:48.280
  • most Americans don't think about their own death?
  • 00:09:48.290 --> 00:09:53.090
  • So, let's think about it. Let's look at it.
  • 00:09:53.100 --> 00:09:57.050
  • Even though most Americans don't want to talk about it,
  • 00:09:57.060 --> 00:09:59.140
  • the Bible talks about it 394 times.
  • 00:09:59.150 --> 00:10:04.180
  • In fact, the seminal passage, you'll be familiar with it,
  • 00:10:04.190 --> 00:10:08.020
  • Ecclesiastes chapter 3, "To everything there is a season,
  • 00:10:08.030 --> 00:10:11.190
  • a time for every purpose under heaven,
  • 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:14.000
  • a time to be born, and a time to die."
  • 00:10:14.010 --> 00:10:18.030
  • And it's been well said over and over and over again,
  • 00:10:18.040 --> 00:10:20.210
  • even by me, that the statistics on death are quite remarkable.
  • 00:10:20.220 --> 00:10:25.140
  • Every one out of one die. Some people actually deny death.
  • 00:10:25.150 --> 00:10:33.170
  • I know that sounds bizarre, but I was looking
  • 00:10:33.180 --> 00:10:35.170
  • on television at a special.
  • 00:10:35.180 --> 00:10:38.080
  • It was called "Eternal Life," subtitled
  • 00:10:38.090 --> 00:10:42.150
  • "The Battle Against Aging."
  • 00:10:42.160 --> 00:10:46.060
  • I smile at that because has anybody ever won that battle?
  • 00:10:46.070 --> 00:10:51.150
  • So, what does it all mean to us?
  • 00:10:51.160 --> 00:10:53.040
  • In the very least, it should mean we should be prepared,
  • 00:10:53.050 --> 00:10:56.130
  • we should get ready.
  • 00:10:56.140 --> 00:10:58.250
  • Somebody will say, "Well, why should I get prepared?
  • 00:10:58.260 --> 00:11:01.050
  • Because once you die, it's all over."
  • 00:11:01.060 --> 00:11:05.210
  • Oh no, it's not.
  • 00:11:05.220 --> 00:11:08.050
  • That's the fallacy that the Bible corrects.
  • 00:11:08.060 --> 00:11:11.250
  • It's not over.
  • 00:11:11.260 --> 00:11:13.170
  • When a person dies, the body decays,
  • 00:11:13.180 --> 00:11:15.240
  • but the soul continues to live on in a conscious state.
  • 00:11:15.250 --> 00:11:19.260
  • One day, that soul will be reunited to that physical body
  • 00:11:19.270 --> 00:11:24.170
  • that will be renewed, restored with new capabilities
  • 00:11:24.180 --> 00:11:29.030
  • like Jesus' own body.
  • 00:11:29.040 --> 00:11:31.180
  • Listen to the words of Jesus, "The hour is coming," he said,
  • 00:11:31.190 --> 00:11:37.070
  • "in which all who are in the graves will hear his voice and
  • 00:11:37.080 --> 00:11:40.100
  • come forth, those who have done good to the resurrection
  • 00:11:40.110 --> 00:11:46.000
  • of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection
  • 00:11:46.010 --> 00:11:48.240
  • of condemnation."
  • 00:11:48.250 --> 00:11:51.110
  • So, according to Jesus in that passage,
  • 00:11:51.120 --> 00:11:53.290
  • there would be two resurrections.
  • 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:55.230
  • Resurrection of life, that's one category.
  • 00:11:55.240 --> 00:11:57.210
  • Resurrection of condemnation, that's the second category.
  • 00:11:57.220 --> 00:12:00.220
  • Both resurrections are seen in the passage here
  • 00:12:00.230 --> 00:12:03.110
  • in Revelation 20.
  • 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:05.230
  • All I can tell you is that this is the most serious,
  • 00:12:05.240 --> 00:12:07.220
  • most sobering scene in all of Scripture to me,
  • 00:12:07.230 --> 00:12:10.020
  • in my opinion.
  • 00:12:10.030 --> 00:12:12.000
  • It is a court room scene, but it is unlike
  • 00:12:12.010 --> 00:12:13.270
  • any earthly court room scene.
  • 00:12:13.280 --> 00:12:16.070
  • There will be no debate about guilt in this court room scene.
  • 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:20.150
  • There is a verdict and no defense.
  • 00:12:20.160 --> 00:12:22.040
  • There is a judge, but no jury.
  • 00:12:22.050 --> 00:12:24.020
  • There is a sentence without any appeal as the rest of the dead
  • 00:12:24.030 --> 00:12:29.160
  • get raised up into their physical restored bodies
  • 00:12:29.170 --> 00:12:35.210
  • to live forever, but in judgment.
  • 00:12:35.220 --> 00:12:38.220
  • And Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in the Bible.
  • 00:12:38.230 --> 00:12:43.090
  • There are only two religions in the world, did you know that?
  • 00:12:43.100 --> 00:12:45.280
  • Only two.
  • 00:12:45.290 --> 00:12:47.110
  • In the first category, the religion of human achievement,
  • 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:50.080
  • you can put all the world religions into that category.
  • 00:12:50.090 --> 00:12:55.010
  • 'Cause that is salvation by our works,
  • 00:12:55.020 --> 00:12:59.040
  • of which no one can ever get to heaven.
  • 00:12:59.050 --> 00:13:02.020
  • The second is the religion of divine accomplishment,
  • 00:13:02.030 --> 00:13:06.020
  • and that is salvation by his work on the cross.
  • 00:13:06.030 --> 00:13:10.180
  • You see, Jesus said, "Whoever believes in me will pass
  • 00:13:10.190 --> 00:13:19.020
  • from death into life, will not face condemnation or judgment,
  • 00:13:19.030 --> 00:13:22.120
  • but pass from death into life."
  • 00:13:22.130 --> 00:13:24.270
  • Believers are saved because they are believers,
  • 00:13:24.280 --> 00:13:29.190
  • they believe what God said is true.
  • 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:32.220
  • They believe that Jesus' death on the cross was enough
  • 00:13:32.230 --> 00:13:35.260
  • for them.
  • 00:13:35.270 --> 00:13:37.060
  • It's his work, not my works.
  • 00:13:37.070 --> 00:13:40.070
  • The reason Jesus came is to keep you out of there.
  • 00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:45.140
  • You're thinking, "Why would God--how could a God of love--"
  • 00:13:45.150 --> 00:13:47.240
  • Listen, that God of love sent the Perfect One to take
  • 00:13:47.250 --> 00:13:51.160
  • your place in punishment so that he could give you the free gift
  • 00:13:51.170 --> 00:13:57.090
  • of heaven and everlasting life.
  • 00:13:57.100 --> 00:14:01.240
  • He did that for you.
  • 00:14:01.250 --> 00:14:07.240
  • But you know, every gift has to be taken, doesn't it?
  • 00:14:07.250 --> 00:14:10.180
  • Has to be opened up.
  • 00:14:10.190 --> 00:14:12.050
  • "As many has received him," the Bible says,
  • 00:14:12.060 --> 00:14:15.100
  • "he gave them the power to become children of God,
  • 00:14:15.110 --> 00:14:18.010
  • to those who believe in his name."
  • 00:14:18.020 --> 00:14:21.270
  • announcer: Only two religions in the world?
  • 00:14:22.050 --> 00:14:24.080
  • Were you surprised to hear Skip say that?
  • 00:14:24.090 --> 00:14:26.110
  • It is true.
  • 00:14:26.120 --> 00:14:27.210
  • So, what are you relying on, your good life or the work
  • 00:14:27.220 --> 00:14:30.180
  • of Jesus on the cross?
  • 00:14:30.190 --> 00:14:33.110
  • The choice is obvious, and the time to make a decision is now.
  • 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:37.260
  • In our next segment, Skip will correct some common myths about
  • 00:14:37.270 --> 00:14:41.000
  • life after death in the message "Surprising Facts About
  • 00:14:41.010 --> 00:14:44.140
  • Your Eternal Home," all coming up on the
  • 00:14:44.150 --> 00:14:47.110
  • "What's Next?" special.
  • 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:49.070
  • Skip: I've heard people say that when you die,
  • 00:14:58.120 --> 00:14:59.290
  • you turn into an angel, or a relative who dies before you
  • 00:15:00.020 --> 00:15:04.090
  • will become your guardian angel, or that heaven is really boring
  • 00:15:04.100 --> 00:15:11.060
  • 'cause you sit on a cloud all day and play a harp.
  • 00:15:11.070 --> 00:15:16.000
  • That church--or heaven is like one long,
  • 00:15:16.010 --> 00:15:19.180
  • boring church service.
  • 00:15:19.190 --> 00:15:22.260
  • No thank you.
  • 00:15:22.270 --> 00:15:25.150
  • Or the common belief some people have that you first have to go
  • 00:15:25.160 --> 00:15:28.180
  • to a place to pay for your sins and have them burned away before
  • 00:15:28.190 --> 00:15:32.210
  • you are admitted into heaven.
  • 00:15:32.220 --> 00:15:36.040
  • One of the things I know you believe in is that the only
  • 00:15:36.050 --> 00:15:40.150
  • authoritative source that we have for life after death
  • 00:15:40.160 --> 00:15:44.190
  • comes from the Bible.
  • 00:15:44.200 --> 00:15:46.280
  • And the Bible speaks about heaven about 500 times.
  • 00:15:46.290 --> 00:15:51.190
  • I want to show you some things that may surprise you
  • 00:15:51.200 --> 00:15:54.070
  • about your eternal home today.
  • 00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:57.080
  • Now, by the time we get to chapter 21,
  • 00:15:57.090 --> 00:16:00.220
  • we are dealing with the final phase of eternity,
  • 00:16:00.230 --> 00:16:07.140
  • what theologians referred to as the eternal state,
  • 00:16:07.150 --> 00:16:11.230
  • the eternal state for believers.
  • 00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:14.200
  • Let's read the first eight verses and we'll start there.
  • 00:16:14.210 --> 00:16:19.150
  • "Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth,
  • 00:16:19.160 --> 00:16:23.080
  • for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away.
  • 00:16:23.090 --> 00:16:29.110
  • Also, there was no more sea.
  • 00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:32.010
  • Then I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
  • 00:16:32.020 --> 00:16:35.150
  • coming down out of heaven from God,
  • 00:16:35.160 --> 00:16:38.000
  • prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
  • 00:16:38.010 --> 00:16:41.290
  • And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying,
  • 00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:45.050
  • 'Behold the Tabernacle of God is with men,
  • 00:16:45.060 --> 00:16:48.120
  • and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people.'"
  • 00:16:48.130 --> 00:16:53.280
  • Let me throw out a few surprising facts
  • 00:16:53.290 --> 00:16:56.030
  • about your eternal home.
  • 00:16:56.040 --> 00:16:57.260
  • Fact number one, it will require destruction.
  • 00:16:57.270 --> 00:17:02.190
  • Most people would never think about that when
  • 00:17:02.200 --> 00:17:05.040
  • they think of heaven.
  • 00:17:05.050 --> 00:17:07.280
  • But it will require destruction.
  • 00:17:07.290 --> 00:17:09.280
  • Look at verse 1, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth,
  • 00:17:09.290 --> 00:17:12.140
  • for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away."
  • 00:17:12.150 --> 00:17:19.190
  • We saw that in the previous chapter.
  • 00:17:19.200 --> 00:17:21.210
  • Heaven and earth fled away from God.
  • 00:17:21.220 --> 00:17:26.260
  • The Prophet Isaiah says, "Thus says the Lord,
  • 00:17:26.270 --> 00:17:30.030
  • 'I will make a new heavens and a new earth
  • 00:17:30.040 --> 00:17:33.010
  • which will last forever.'"
  • 00:17:33.020 --> 00:17:36.230
  • This one will not, the next one will last forever.
  • 00:17:36.240 --> 00:17:42.060
  • 2 Peter chapter 3, he agrees with that,
  • 00:17:42.070 --> 00:17:46.000
  • "We according to his promise look for a new heaven
  • 00:17:46.010 --> 00:17:50.040
  • and a new earth in which dwell righteousness."
  • 00:17:50.050 --> 00:17:53.290
  • So, this is a new earth, new heavens and new earth,
  • 00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:56.190
  • new universe, new physical planet with dimension
  • 00:17:56.200 --> 00:17:59.260
  • and substance.
  • 00:17:59.270 --> 00:18:01.280
  • So, two surprising things, it's going to require destruction,
  • 00:18:01.290 --> 00:18:04.110
  • it'll be a fresh design.
  • 00:18:04.120 --> 00:18:06.140
  • Here's the third surprising fact,
  • 00:18:06.150 --> 00:18:08.170
  • and I shun to say this, but I will say it because I'm a Bible
  • 00:18:08.180 --> 00:18:12.070
  • teacher and I can't make up what I want heaven to be like.
  • 00:18:12.080 --> 00:18:16.110
  • I can't say it's one big long golf course in the sky.
  • 00:18:16.120 --> 00:18:20.030
  • I have to say what the Bible says and here's
  • 00:18:20.040 --> 00:18:21.260
  • the third surprising fact, it won't have an ocean.
  • 00:18:21.270 --> 00:18:26.210
  • It's no longer going to be water-based.
  • 00:18:26.220 --> 00:18:28.140
  • It's going to have a different climate altogether.
  • 00:18:28.150 --> 00:18:30.210
  • The world we live in now is a watery planet.
  • 00:18:30.220 --> 00:18:33.140
  • In fact, it's the only place in the universe that we know
  • 00:18:33.150 --> 00:18:36.120
  • of that has the ability to sustain human life,
  • 00:18:36.130 --> 00:18:40.240
  • animal life, and plant life.
  • 00:18:40.250 --> 00:18:43.180
  • Three quarters of the earth is water.
  • 00:18:43.190 --> 00:18:47.020
  • Here's the fourth surprising fact about your eternal home,
  • 00:18:47.030 --> 00:18:50.080
  • it's going to have a capital city.
  • 00:18:50.090 --> 00:18:53.010
  • verse 2, "Then I, John, saw the holy city,
  • 00:18:53.020 --> 00:18:56.200
  • new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
  • 00:18:56.210 --> 00:19:00.150
  • prepared as a bride adorned for her bridegroom.
  • 00:19:00.160 --> 00:19:04.040
  • Then I heard a loud voice from heaven saying,
  • 00:19:04.050 --> 00:19:06.150
  • 'Behold the Tabernacle of God is with men,
  • 00:19:06.160 --> 00:19:09.260
  • and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people,
  • 00:19:09.270 --> 00:19:13.000
  • and God himself will be with them and be their God.'"
  • 00:19:13.010 --> 00:19:18.060
  • The fifth surprising fact about your eternal home,
  • 00:19:18.070 --> 00:19:21.230
  • it will feel unfamiliar.
  • 00:19:21.240 --> 00:19:26.170
  • Now, before I read the text, let me make a statement
  • 00:19:26.180 --> 00:19:29.110
  • that I believe to be true.
  • 00:19:29.120 --> 00:19:31.270
  • Everything so far I have said to you describing your eternal home
  • 00:19:31.280 --> 00:19:36.020
  • sounds really weird, admit it.
  • 00:19:36.030 --> 00:19:40.240
  • To the average ears, everything I have mentioned in this sermon
  • 00:19:40.250 --> 00:19:43.130
  • sounds so outlandish.
  • 00:19:43.140 --> 00:19:46.090
  • It sounds weird because, yes, we can read the Scriptures,
  • 00:19:46.100 --> 00:19:50.080
  • and we can try to visualize the description,
  • 00:19:50.090 --> 00:19:52.280
  • but it's hard to get our minds around this.
  • 00:19:52.290 --> 00:19:57.260
  • It's so different than anything we've ever known.
  • 00:19:57.270 --> 00:20:01.020
  • C.S. Lewis said, "Our ability to imagine what eternity
  • 00:20:01.030 --> 00:20:03.290
  • will be like is like two infants in a womb
  • 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:07.240
  • talking about what they
  • 00:20:07.250 --> 00:20:09.090
  • will be doing once they're born and are 25 years old."
  • 00:20:09.100 --> 00:20:14.060
  • That was helpful to me.
  • 00:20:14.070 --> 00:20:15.160
  • It's like, "Yeah, what you do think you'll be doing
  • 00:20:15.170 --> 00:20:16.260
  • when you're 20?"
  • 00:20:16.270 --> 00:20:18.060
  • It's impossible.
  • 00:20:18.070 --> 00:20:20.120
  • So, that is why, every time we give a Bible study about heaven,
  • 00:20:20.130 --> 00:20:23.080
  • you walk away disappointed.
  • 00:20:23.090 --> 00:20:26.130
  • Honestly, you do 'cause you'd love it if I'd show slides.
  • 00:20:26.140 --> 00:20:31.190
  • But I can't. We look through a glass darkly.
  • 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:33.210
  • We have words and visual descriptions,
  • 00:20:33.220 --> 00:20:36.120
  • and we get a little bit of a hint,
  • 00:20:36.130 --> 00:20:37.250
  • but it's like, "Ah, it's so different.
  • 00:20:37.260 --> 00:20:40.130
  • It's unfamiliar."
  • 00:20:40.140 --> 00:20:42.200
  • This is one of the reasons when the future is described,
  • 00:20:42.210 --> 00:20:46.160
  • it is described in negatives, as if to say it's not at all
  • 00:20:46.170 --> 00:20:52.150
  • what you have experienced so far in life.
  • 00:20:52.160 --> 00:20:55.260
  • For example, notice what it says, verse 4,
  • 00:20:56.100 --> 00:21:00.030
  • "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
  • 00:21:00.040 --> 00:21:03.140
  • There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying,"
  • 00:21:03.150 --> 00:21:09.130
  • those are all negatives.
  • 00:21:09.140 --> 00:21:11.150
  • "There shall be no more pain," that's a negative,
  • 00:21:11.160 --> 00:21:15.010
  • "for the former things have passed away."
  • 00:21:15.020 --> 00:21:18.200
  • And he who sat on the throne said,
  • 00:21:18.210 --> 00:21:20.040
  • "Behold, I make all things new."
  • 00:21:20.050 --> 00:21:22.070
  • You'll never go to a funeral again,
  • 00:21:22.080 --> 00:21:23.220
  • you'll never visit a cemetery.
  • 00:21:23.230 --> 00:21:26.100
  • And you know why? 'Cause you'll never age.
  • 00:21:26.110 --> 00:21:30.150
  • You see, if there's no death, then there are no conditions
  • 00:21:30.160 --> 00:21:33.030
  • that bring death.
  • 00:21:33.040 --> 00:21:34.150
  • No disease, no hospitals, no doctors.
  • 00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:39.140
  • This is the sixth surprising fact about your eternal home,
  • 00:21:39.150 --> 00:21:43.120
  • not everyone will be there.
  • 00:21:43.130 --> 00:21:46.250
  • Now, you've heard me say this on so many occasions,
  • 00:21:46.260 --> 00:21:49.090
  • you're going to look for people, say,
  • 00:21:49.100 --> 00:21:50.240
  • "Well, where's she?
  • 00:21:50.250 --> 00:21:52.040
  • I surely thought she'd be in heaven."
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:53.220
  • She's not here.
  • 00:21:53.230 --> 00:21:55.120
  • But then you're going to see other people and go,
  • 00:21:55.130 --> 00:21:56.250
  • "How did you get here?"
  • 00:21:56.260 --> 00:21:59.080
  • And they're going to say, "That's what I was about to say
  • 00:21:59.090 --> 00:22:00.280
  • to you."
  • 00:22:00.290 --> 00:22:04.250
  • Not everyone is there, it's a city of only believers.
  • 00:22:04.260 --> 00:22:08.030
  • Verse 7, "He who overcomes shall inherit all things,
  • 00:22:08.040 --> 00:22:10.190
  • and I will be his God, and he will be my son."
  • 00:22:10.200 --> 00:22:15.160
  • You know what heaven's going to be?
  • 00:22:15.170 --> 00:22:18.080
  • It's going to be God continually blowing your mind
  • 00:22:18.090 --> 00:22:24.060
  • with his power, his majesty, his glory, and his love.
  • 00:22:24.070 --> 00:22:29.250
  • How do I know that?
  • 00:22:29.260 --> 00:22:31.220
  • 'Cause Paul said in Ephesians 2 that in the ages to come,
  • 00:22:31.230 --> 00:22:36.010
  • what is that?
  • 00:22:36.020 --> 00:22:37.110
  • That's eternity.
  • 00:22:37.120 --> 00:22:38.210
  • That in the ages to come, he might show the exceeding riches
  • 00:22:38.220 --> 00:22:43.060
  • of his grace and his kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
  • 00:22:43.070 --> 00:22:47.250
  • In other words, it's going to take God all of eternity to show
  • 00:22:47.260 --> 00:22:51.270
  • you the fullness of who he is and how much he loves you.
  • 00:22:51.280 --> 00:22:57.160
  • That's what heaven's going to be like.
  • 00:22:57.170 --> 00:22:59.260
  • I hope you go there.
  • 00:22:59.270 --> 00:23:02.140
  • Father, thank you for a little glimpse.
  • 00:23:02.150 --> 00:23:08.150
  • For us to think about it, it's really impossible to get our
  • 00:23:08.160 --> 00:23:11.000
  • heads around an experience we've never had or a place
  • 00:23:11.010 --> 00:23:14.290
  • we've never been.
  • 00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:16.250
  • But it's a place where you are, and it's why we want
  • 00:23:16.260 --> 00:23:19.140
  • to go there.
  • 00:23:19.150 --> 00:23:20.270
  • Because we want community with you,
  • 00:23:20.280 --> 00:23:23.020
  • and the thought that we'll be with you and see you
  • 00:23:23.030 --> 00:23:25.080
  • in everlasting glory.
  • 00:23:25.090 --> 00:23:28.050
  • Father, I pray for those who don't have a
  • 00:23:28.060 --> 00:23:29.290
  • personal relationship with you, they don't know you.
  • 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:33.080
  • Lord, I pray that the words of Scripture,
  • 00:23:33.090 --> 00:23:36.040
  • combined with the work of your Holy Spirit in their hearts,
  • 00:23:36.050 --> 00:23:38.260
  • would be enough to convince them that just living for this world
  • 00:23:38.270 --> 00:23:42.220
  • isn't enough.
  • 00:23:42.230 --> 00:23:46.020
  • I pray they would experience the awesomeness of a new life,
  • 00:23:46.030 --> 00:23:52.060
  • the forgiveness of sin, a new joy, a new peace.
  • 00:23:52.070 --> 00:23:59.130
  • I'm going to ask you to say a prayer right now where you are.
  • 00:23:59.140 --> 00:24:04.190
  • Say to the Lord right now, "Lord, I give you my life.
  • 00:24:04.200 --> 00:24:10.180
  • I give my life to you. I know that I am a sinner, Lord.
  • 00:24:10.190 --> 00:24:16.240
  • I know that, and I'm sorry for it.
  • 00:24:16.250 --> 00:24:20.080
  • And I believe that Jesus died on a cross for me,
  • 00:24:20.090 --> 00:24:23.130
  • shed his blood for my sin, and rose again
  • 00:24:23.140 --> 00:24:26.070
  • from the grave for me.
  • 00:24:26.080 --> 00:24:30.210
  • I turn from my sin, Lord, and I turn to Jesus as my Savior.
  • 00:24:30.220 --> 00:24:40.220
  • I pray that you would fill me with your Holy Spirit.
  • 00:24:41.220 --> 00:24:44.200
  • Help me to live for you in Jesus' name, amen."
  • 00:24:44.210 --> 00:24:49.260
  • announcer: We do hope you'll choose to take advantage
  • 00:24:51.050 --> 00:24:52.290
  • of the offer of eternal life through the forgiveness of Jesus
  • 00:24:53.000 --> 00:24:56.060
  • provided by his death on the cross.
  • 00:24:56.070 --> 00:24:59.060
  • That is the gospel, good news about what can be next for you
  • 00:24:59.070 --> 00:25:03.170
  • and anyone willing to ask for forgiveness.
  • 00:25:03.180 --> 00:25:07.100
  • The grace of God is there for you.
  • 00:25:07.110 --> 00:25:10.010
  • In just a minute, Skip will be back with
  • 00:25:10.020 --> 00:25:11.250
  • some closing words for you.

  • announcer: What in the world is next for us?
  • 00:25:18.200 --> 00:25:20.170

  • 00:26:05.020 --> 00:26:07.010
