  • 00:00:20.010 --> 00:00:24.080
  • Bobbie Houston: A very big welcome to "Colour Conference:
  • 00:00:24.090 --> 00:00:26.060
  • The Green Room."
  • 00:00:26.070 --> 00:00:27.240
  • In today's episode, I have the immense privilege of sitting
  • 00:00:27.250 --> 00:00:31.130
  • down with the exquisite Roma Downey.
  • 00:00:31.140 --> 00:00:34.050
  • A woman who needs no introduction,
  • 00:00:34.060 --> 00:00:36.100
  • she's an extraordinary actor, producer, wife, and mother.
  • 00:00:36.110 --> 00:00:40.180
  • She talks openly about outworking her faith in the film
  • 00:00:40.190 --> 00:00:43.290
  • and television industry, the responsibility she believes it
  • 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:48.010
  • carries, and what she wished she knew as a younger woman.
  • 00:00:48.020 --> 00:00:52.210
  • I know you're gonna love this conversation as much as I did.
  • 00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:56.150
  • 00:00:56.160 --> 00:01:06.100
  • Bobbie: Well, I'm sitting here with the beautiful
  • 00:01:06.110 --> 00:01:08.080
  • Roma Downey, and she is absolutely gorgeous.
  • 00:01:08.090 --> 00:01:11.290
  • She is wife, mother.
  • 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.110
  • You are, of course, actress, you're producer.
  • 00:01:14.120 --> 00:01:18.010
  • I think you're an advocate of many, many things.
  • 00:01:18.020 --> 00:01:20.230
  • And in my mind, you're absolutely all together lovely.
  • 00:01:20.240 --> 00:01:23.270
  • So, obviously, a lot of people know you.
  • 00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:25.170
  • They know you're Roma.
  • 00:01:25.180 --> 00:01:27.050
  • But for those who don't, I'd love you just to give us a
  • 00:01:27.060 --> 00:01:29.230
  • little insight to who you are.
  • 00:01:29.240 --> 00:01:32.080
  • Tell us a little bit about yourself.
  • 00:01:32.090 --> 00:01:34.000
  • Roma Downey: I grew up in a small city called Derry,
  • 00:01:34.010 --> 00:01:37.230
  • also known as Londonderry, in Northern Ireland.
  • 00:01:37.240 --> 00:01:41.090
  • It was an interesting time to grow up because wasn't that long
  • 00:01:41.100 --> 00:01:46.050
  • ago, we had tremendous conflict in Northern Ireland.
  • 00:01:46.060 --> 00:01:49.220
  • It became known as a period of time in our history
  • 00:01:49.230 --> 00:01:52.010
  • called "The Troubles."
  • 00:01:52.020 --> 00:01:53.290
  • And so, the landscape of my childhood was a little bit
  • 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:56.220
  • different, perhaps, than a normal childhood
  • 00:01:56.230 --> 00:01:59.150
  • because there was an army of occupation, and, you know,
  • 00:01:59.160 --> 00:02:04.040
  • there were shootings, and there was bombings,
  • 00:02:04.050 --> 00:02:06.200
  • and there was a lot of violence, and a lot of tension
  • 00:02:06.210 --> 00:02:10.250
  • in the childhood as a result of the violence.
  • 00:02:10.260 --> 00:02:14.080
  • And yet, in spite of that, you know,
  • 00:02:14.090 --> 00:02:15.280
  • there was great humor and community and love.
  • 00:02:15.290 --> 00:02:22.020
  • You know, there's always beauty in everything.
  • 00:02:22.030 --> 00:02:23.200
  • Bobbie: Always humor, right? The Irish are humorous.
  • 00:02:23.210 --> 00:02:25.130
  • Roma: Great humor and great song and so on.
  • 00:02:25.140 --> 00:02:29.130
  • One extraordinary moment I do remember.
  • 00:02:29.140 --> 00:02:32.080
  • My mother died when I was just 10 years of age,
  • 00:02:32.090 --> 00:02:35.210
  • and that was a really traumatic experience
  • 00:02:35.220 --> 00:02:39.190
  • for a child to lose her parent.
  • 00:02:39.200 --> 00:02:42.050
  • It was a little bit like the lights had been on,
  • 00:02:42.060 --> 00:02:44.270
  • and suddenly, the lights had been turned out.
  • 00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:47.170
  • And a world that was being lived in full color suddenly seemed
  • 00:02:47.180 --> 00:02:51.000
  • like it was in black and white.
  • 00:02:51.010 --> 00:02:53.010
  • But I remember going up with my Auntie Ruby to the cemetery.
  • 00:02:53.020 --> 00:02:56.250
  • And the cemetery in Derry was on a hillside that was often
  • 00:02:56.260 --> 00:03:00.090
  • battered with wind and rain.
  • 00:03:00.100 --> 00:03:02.150
  • It was a wet and windy afternoon,
  • 00:03:02.160 --> 00:03:04.060
  • and I was wearing a red cape
  • 00:03:04.070 --> 00:03:07.250
  • with a fake fur collar I remember.
  • 00:03:07.260 --> 00:03:10.260
  • But this gun battle broke out anyway,
  • 00:03:10.270 --> 00:03:13.150
  • and we ended up ducking down behind tombstones,
  • 00:03:13.160 --> 00:03:17.060
  • and we could smell this burning.
  • 00:03:17.070 --> 00:03:20.060
  • And didn't it turn out there was a singed hole
  • 00:03:20.070 --> 00:03:24.210
  • in the fur of this cape?
  • 00:03:24.220 --> 00:03:27.230
  • So that had come pretty close, you know?
  • 00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:31.130
  • My dad passed away while I was still in university.
  • 00:03:31.140 --> 00:03:35.250
  • And so I find myself in my early 20s without a mom and dad.
  • 00:03:35.260 --> 00:03:40.150
  • And so, suddenly, I was like a girl without a home.
  • 00:03:40.160 --> 00:03:45.060
  • But rather than seeing the limit in the that or the hurt in that,
  • 00:03:45.070 --> 00:03:49.070
  • I thought, "Well, what would I like to do?"
  • 00:03:49.080 --> 00:03:51.100
  • You know, "Where could I go?
  • 00:03:51.110 --> 00:03:53.070
  • Where might my life take me?"
  • 00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:55.200
  • And an opportunity rose to a theater company that I belonged
  • 00:03:55.210 --> 00:04:00.080
  • to to take a plane, come to America.
  • 00:04:00.090 --> 00:04:04.010
  • And we came over and we toured cities in America
  • 00:04:04.020 --> 00:04:08.080
  • that had an Irish influence, like Chicago, and Boston,
  • 00:04:08.090 --> 00:04:11.280
  • Philadelphia, and so on.
  • 00:04:11.290 --> 00:04:13.110
  • We ended up in New York City.
  • 00:04:13.120 --> 00:04:15.090
  • I loved it there, and I loved the theater.
  • 00:04:15.100 --> 00:04:17.270
  • And so, kind of, that's what brought me over.
  • 00:04:17.280 --> 00:04:20.250
  • I'm an American citizen now, but my roots began--
  • 00:04:20.260 --> 00:04:25.200
  • Bobbie: So, tell us about your family.
  • 00:04:25.210 --> 00:04:27.010
  • Roma: So, I have a wonderful husband,
  • 00:04:27.020 --> 00:04:29.140
  • Mark Burnett, and three amazing kids.
  • 00:04:29.150 --> 00:04:32.170
  • My husband and I work together.
  • 00:04:32.180 --> 00:04:34.180
  • We have a production company called Lightworkers that we
  • 00:04:34.190 --> 00:04:40.200
  • designed to create projects that really hold the light of hope,
  • 00:04:40.210 --> 00:04:46.180
  • the light of faith, that shine a light in the darkness.
  • 00:04:46.190 --> 00:04:49.260
  • Our mantra is that it's better to light a candle
  • 00:04:49.270 --> 00:04:52.210
  • than curse the darkness.
  • 00:04:52.220 --> 00:04:54.170
  • And so, we've been able to, with our company,
  • 00:04:54.180 --> 00:04:58.280
  • bring faith-based projects to television and to the big
  • 00:04:58.290 --> 00:05:04.040
  • screen, and we've been having a lot of fun with that.
  • 00:05:04.050 --> 00:05:08.040
  • You know, it really feels that it was a calling on our lives.
  • 00:05:08.050 --> 00:05:12.020
  • And we don't always know the next step.
  • 00:05:12.030 --> 00:05:16.060
  • And I think if I've learned anything as a producer,
  • 00:05:16.070 --> 00:05:19.150
  • you know, if you sat around waiting for the absolute
  • 00:05:19.160 --> 00:05:22.170
  • certainty of anything before you took a move,
  • 00:05:22.180 --> 00:05:26.110
  • nothing would ever happen, you know?
  • 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:28.160
  • You sometimes have to start with the first step
  • 00:05:28.170 --> 00:05:32.120
  • and keep moving forward.
  • 00:05:32.130 --> 00:05:34.180
  • And we work intentionally, Bobbie.
  • 00:05:34.190 --> 00:05:38.180
  • I can't think of anything I've ever done in my life,
  • 00:05:38.190 --> 00:05:41.050
  • big or small, that I didn't pray about first,
  • 00:05:41.060 --> 00:05:46.030
  • praying for guidance, and praying that,
  • 00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:48.210
  • you know, that the way will be shown to us,
  • 00:05:48.220 --> 00:05:50.260
  • And, you know, and--
  • 00:05:50.270 --> 00:05:53.130
  • Bobbie: Because they're big undertakings, aren't they?
  • 00:05:53.140 --> 00:05:54.250
  • They're not small.
  • 00:05:54.260 --> 00:05:56.060
  • Roma: Big undertakings, no, big, scary undertakings
  • 00:05:56.070 --> 00:05:59.120
  • sometimes, you know?
  • 00:05:59.130 --> 00:06:01.040
  • I mean, for many years, I had the very good fortune to play
  • 00:06:01.050 --> 00:06:06.040
  • an angel on American television, and it was called,
  • 00:06:06.050 --> 00:06:09.140
  • "Touched by An Angel."
  • 00:06:09.150 --> 00:06:11.060
  • And it was unusual in American network television because it
  • 00:06:11.070 --> 00:06:15.130
  • took a very simple premise, and that was that there is a God,
  • 00:06:15.140 --> 00:06:18.280
  • and that he loves us,
  • 00:06:18.290 --> 00:06:20.080
  • and that he wants to be a part of our lives.
  • 00:06:20.090 --> 00:06:22.170
  • And the show, remarkably, had a 10-year run in the United States
  • 00:06:22.180 --> 00:06:28.010
  • and had an audience of over 20 million people tuned
  • 00:06:28.020 --> 00:06:31.050
  • in each week.
  • 00:06:31.060 --> 00:06:32.210
  • And so, you know, it's a long time that I've known that people
  • 00:06:32.220 --> 00:06:36.220
  • are hungry in entertainment for a message of hope
  • 00:06:36.230 --> 00:06:42.000
  • within the body of the work.
  • 00:06:42.010 --> 00:06:44.020
  • And yet, Hollywood hasn't often responded to that call.
  • 00:06:44.030 --> 00:06:49.240
  • And so, Mark and I realized, you know,
  • 00:06:49.250 --> 00:06:52.260
  • that there was a tremendous underserved audience and that
  • 00:06:52.270 --> 00:06:57.170
  • maybe, with our, you know, with our combined talents,
  • 00:06:57.180 --> 00:07:04.030
  • our combined heart, and out combined resources,
  • 00:07:04.040 --> 00:07:07.290
  • that we were committed to trying to create content that would
  • 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:13.110
  • fill this need and would glorify God.
  • 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:17.170
  • Bobbie: I wanna ask you some questions about the
  • 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:20.060
  • entertainment industry and the entertainment field or world,
  • 00:07:20.070 --> 00:07:23.030
  • and it's definitely a major field or sphere of society.
  • 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:26.180
  • It's described as one of the seven pillars
  • 00:07:26.190 --> 00:07:29.110
  • or seven mountains in society, right?
  • 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:31.240
  • There's so many gifted and talented people.
  • 00:07:31.250 --> 00:07:34.100
  • There's so many people who have good hearts and good souls and
  • 00:07:34.110 --> 00:07:39.090
  • are seeking to do what is right, but then it's like sometimes
  • 00:07:39.100 --> 00:07:42.030
  • there's this spotlight.
  • 00:07:42.040 --> 00:07:43.200
  • It's, like, almost like the spotlight of heaven goes
  • 00:07:43.210 --> 00:07:46.060
  • on some people or some ministries even.
  • 00:07:46.070 --> 00:07:50.060
  • Roma: Of course, this--in Los Angeles,
  • 00:07:50.070 --> 00:07:52.240
  • you know, anybody that ever had a dream to be
  • 00:07:52.250 --> 00:07:56.220
  • in the entertainment industry, they're coming,
  • 00:07:56.230 --> 00:07:59.080
  • they're pouring in here by the thousands.
  • 00:07:59.090 --> 00:08:01.100
  • You know, you were a big fish in the high school play.
  • 00:08:01.110 --> 00:08:04.030
  • And they're suddenly on a Greyhound bus
  • 00:08:04.040 --> 00:08:05.200
  • to come into this town to be in the movies.
  • 00:08:05.210 --> 00:08:08.160
  • But you can imagine, for every one person that makes it,
  • 00:08:08.170 --> 00:08:11.090
  • there's, you know, thousands that don't.
  • 00:08:11.100 --> 00:08:13.280
  • And so, what sustains you at that time, you know?
  • 00:08:13.290 --> 00:08:18.140
  • I mean, you can't define yourself by what you do,
  • 00:08:18.150 --> 00:08:22.200
  • or else it begs the question,
  • 00:08:22.210 --> 00:08:24.000
  • "Who are you when you're not doing it?"
  • 00:08:24.010 --> 00:08:26.010
  • It has to be more than that.
  • 00:08:26.020 --> 00:08:27.280
  • You know, I had a season in the, you know,
  • 00:08:27.290 --> 00:08:32.020
  • prominently in the limelight, on the red carpet.
  • 00:08:32.030 --> 00:08:34.270
  • You know, "Roma, Roma, this way, this way."
  • 00:08:34.280 --> 00:08:37.170
  • But then, suddenly, you're on the red carpet
  • 00:08:37.180 --> 00:08:39.110
  • and nobody, you know?
  • 00:08:39.120 --> 00:08:40.230
  • The spotlight is on somebody else,
  • 00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:43.050
  • and that's okay.
  • 00:08:43.060 --> 00:08:44.150
  • And it's like if you're living to be in the spotlight,
  • 00:08:44.160 --> 00:08:47.210
  • you know, that's a superficial life, you know?
  • 00:08:47.220 --> 00:08:51.150
  • So, we have, you know, been enjoying the,
  • 00:08:51.160 --> 00:08:56.270
  • sort of, the deeper understanding of how our
  • 00:08:56.280 --> 00:09:01.290
  • influence in the spotlight can keep the spotlight on heaven,
  • 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:08.160
  • to keep the spotlight on the Lord, you know?
  • 00:09:08.170 --> 00:09:11.100
  • And so, how do we do that?
  • 00:09:11.110 --> 00:09:12.220
  • We're doing it through our work in film and in television.
  • 00:09:12.230 --> 00:09:15.260
  • We made "The Bible" series.
  • 00:09:15.270 --> 00:09:17.100
  • We made the movie about Jesus, "Son of God."
  • 00:09:17.110 --> 00:09:20.010
  • We made "AD," which is a series about Acts.
  • 00:09:20.020 --> 00:09:23.110
  • We shot the film "Ben-Hur," which is a story about
  • 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:27.070
  • forgiveness, thank you.
  • 00:09:27.080 --> 00:09:28.200
  • And, you know, and on television,
  • 00:09:28.210 --> 00:09:30.120
  • we have any number of shows that have a much more subliminal,
  • 00:09:30.130 --> 00:09:35.150
  • less obvious message, but are all about good will
  • 00:09:35.160 --> 00:09:39.070
  • and upliftment.
  • 00:09:39.080 --> 00:09:40.180
  • "The Voice," the American TV show, "The Voice,"
  • 00:09:40.190 --> 00:09:43.030
  • which was about encouragement and raising people up.
  • 00:09:43.040 --> 00:09:46.210
  • Bobbie: I think it's actually a totally new day for television.
  • 00:09:46.220 --> 00:09:49.040
  • I think it's a new day for the gospel,
  • 00:09:49.050 --> 00:09:51.160
  • for God to, in some ways, scream his truths to a world that just
  • 00:09:51.170 --> 00:09:57.140
  • needs to hear his good news.
  • 00:09:57.150 --> 00:09:59.110
  • Roma: I think you're right.
  • 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:00.210
  • It's a hurting world, and, you know,
  • 00:10:00.220 --> 00:10:02.170
  • and we in the entertainment industry,
  • 00:10:02.180 --> 00:10:04.230
  • I think, have a responsibility to,
  • 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:07.260
  • you know, to create content that,
  • 00:10:07.270 --> 00:10:11.230
  • you know, that illuminates or that raises peoples up.
  • 00:10:11.240 --> 00:10:15.170
  • Loving Jesus and walking with Jesus has changed my life.
  • 00:10:15.180 --> 00:10:20.180
  • And I know it's the truth.
  • 00:10:20.190 --> 00:10:22.140
  • And so, therefore, in the work that I'm doing,
  • 00:10:22.150 --> 00:10:25.290
  • in the work that we're doing, we have tried either overtly,
  • 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:30.120
  • and in other shows, more discreetly,
  • 00:10:30.130 --> 00:10:34.040
  • we, through that, so that somebody,
  • 00:10:34.050 --> 00:10:36.120
  • somewhere, watching in the, you know,
  • 00:10:36.130 --> 00:10:39.010
  • in the comfort of their own home,
  • 00:10:39.020 --> 00:10:41.050
  • it might reach out through the screen and open their hearts.
  • 00:10:41.060 --> 00:10:44.200
  • Bobbie: Right, but I think it's felt.
  • 00:10:44.210 --> 00:10:46.000
  • And so, you know, congratulations to you on that.
  • 00:10:46.010 --> 00:10:47.210
  • Roma: Really, it was as much that somebody believed that much
  • 00:10:50.070 --> 00:10:53.220
  • in me that it created a confidence,
  • 00:10:53.230 --> 00:10:57.200
  • I guess, or, you know, that I started to believe that I might
  • 00:10:57.210 --> 00:11:01.130
  • be able to fulfill those dreams.
  • 00:11:01.140 --> 00:11:04.080
  • And it put me on a journey that brought me,
  • 00:11:04.090 --> 00:11:07.220
  • you know, to this moment.
  • 00:11:07.230 --> 00:11:09.230
  • Bobbie: We were chatting before, and I said,
  • 00:11:17.250 --> 00:11:19.090
  • "The overarching language of Colour is placing value
  • 00:11:19.100 --> 00:11:23.200
  • upon women or womanhood in order that she can rise up
  • 00:11:23.210 --> 00:11:27.220
  • in her potential, place value upon others."
  • 00:11:27.230 --> 00:11:31.100
  • And for the last 3 years, we've been kept within sub language,
  • 00:11:31.110 --> 00:11:35.040
  • actually, of "Be Found."
  • 00:11:35.050 --> 00:11:37.100
  • So, one year it was "Be found in his words.
  • 00:11:37.110 --> 00:11:40.040
  • Be found in his shadow. Be found in his steps."
  • 00:11:40.050 --> 00:11:42.240
  • Last year, we talked about being found in the mystery of God,
  • 00:11:42.250 --> 00:11:46.150
  • as profound as that is.
  • 00:11:46.160 --> 00:11:48.220
  • And then this year, I really felt in my heart to theme it
  • 00:11:48.230 --> 00:11:52.290
  • around the language of, "Be found in the field,"
  • 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.230
  • as in, the fields of life, calling, you know,
  • 00:11:55.240 --> 00:12:00.040
  • obviously harvest fields.
  • 00:12:00.050 --> 00:12:01.140
  • Because I think the fields surrounding this world
  • 00:12:01.150 --> 00:12:05.030
  • are ripe unto harvest.
  • 00:12:05.040 --> 00:12:07.260
  • So, I often talk about seeds of greatness,
  • 00:12:07.270 --> 00:12:11.050
  • the seeds of greatness within us that are imparted by God.
  • 00:12:11.060 --> 00:12:14.150
  • And so I just wanna ask you a question.
  • 00:12:14.160 --> 00:12:16.070
  • Do you believe that greatness resides within everyone?
  • 00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:19.060
  • Roma: I absolutely do, and I think,
  • 00:12:19.070 --> 00:12:21.100
  • you know, I used to look at people who were doing
  • 00:12:21.110 --> 00:12:23.270
  • extraordinary things when I was a younger person,
  • 00:12:23.280 --> 00:12:28.070
  • and remarkable things, and I always used to think,
  • 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:31.210
  • "People are so brave.
  • 00:12:31.220 --> 00:12:33.080
  • Like, I would never have the courage to do that."
  • 00:12:33.090 --> 00:12:36.000
  • I don't know that I'm brave, but what I have learned is courage
  • 00:12:36.010 --> 00:12:41.130
  • is being afraid but still taking the steps.
  • 00:12:41.140 --> 00:12:44.130
  • And I think that once you understand that,
  • 00:12:44.140 --> 00:12:48.040
  • you know, once you can look around a room and know that
  • 00:12:48.050 --> 00:12:50.230
  • everybody's got those voices of doubt in their head, you know?
  • 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:55.030
  • I think that most people are anxious or nervous or insecure.
  • 00:12:55.040 --> 00:13:00.250
  • Bobbie: I think people need to hear that.
  • 00:13:00.260 --> 00:13:02.230
  • 'Cause I think sometimes people do look at others
  • 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:05.200
  • and they're stepping out in their faith--and
  • 00:13:05.210 --> 00:13:08.100
  • they just think, "Oh, that's easy."
  • 00:13:08.110 --> 00:13:09.230
  • Or, "So that's just so natural for you to do."
  • 00:13:09.240 --> 00:13:11.140
  • But I personally don't think any of us ever graduate from it.
  • 00:13:11.150 --> 00:13:14.150
  • Like, I probably feel less capable,
  • 00:13:14.160 --> 00:13:18.200
  • less--not confident, like, you learn confidence in Christ
  • 00:13:18.210 --> 00:13:21.190
  • because you know with the passage of time,
  • 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:23.290
  • or with longevity, that he never fails.
  • 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:27.080
  • But every new day, every new opportunity, every new horizon,
  • 00:13:27.090 --> 00:13:30.260
  • it's like you've still got to step out in faith.
  • 00:13:30.270 --> 00:13:33.200
  • You've still got to exercise it, right?
  • 00:13:33.210 --> 00:13:35.000
  • Roma: I think if somebody had told me as a young woman,
  • 00:13:35.010 --> 00:13:37.180
  • you know, that everybody has these,
  • 00:13:37.190 --> 00:13:40.040
  • you know, these self-doubts, and that even the most confident
  • 00:13:40.050 --> 00:13:44.180
  • person, if you were able to pull back the curtain to look at
  • 00:13:44.190 --> 00:13:48.030
  • their thoughts inside their head,
  • 00:13:48.040 --> 00:13:50.270
  • you know that people are riddled with different fears and so on.
  • 00:13:50.280 --> 00:13:55.210
  • And, you know, but that you move forward.
  • 00:13:55.220 --> 00:13:58.250
  • I think it might inspire more people to get off the couch
  • 00:13:58.260 --> 00:14:02.110
  • and try something and not wait, you know?
  • 00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:06.200
  • I have, you know, with my own kids,
  • 00:14:06.210 --> 00:14:09.260
  • I see them sometimes.
  • 00:14:09.270 --> 00:14:11.090
  • They think, "Well, when I get it,
  • 00:14:11.100 --> 00:14:12.290
  • you know, when it's ready, then I will.
  • 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:15.170
  • When it's all perfect, when I can get all my ducks in a row,
  • 00:14:15.180 --> 00:14:20.140
  • then I'll--" You know, it's like,
  • 00:14:20.150 --> 00:14:22.070
  • "But that may never be.
  • 00:14:22.080 --> 00:14:24.000
  • You might never get off the couch, you know?"
  • 00:14:24.010 --> 00:14:26.190
  • And it's to step up because you will draw people to you
  • 00:14:26.200 --> 00:14:30.230
  • if you're bold enough to step out.
  • 00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:33.230
  • Bobbie: Yeah, I think there's a different environment
  • 00:14:33.240 --> 00:14:36.180
  • today for young people.
  • 00:14:36.190 --> 00:14:37.280
  • I think, like, my generation, I don't recall having people
  • 00:14:37.290 --> 00:14:41.050
  • around me, encouraging me to dream or to aspire or to even
  • 00:14:41.060 --> 00:14:48.030
  • contemplate that there might be measure within.
  • 00:14:48.040 --> 00:14:50.270
  • You take the analogy of seed and soil and harvest,
  • 00:14:50.280 --> 00:14:53.280
  • it's, like, one sows, another waters,
  • 00:14:53.290 --> 00:14:56.240
  • God gives the increase.
  • 00:14:56.250 --> 00:14:58.050
  • So, I think the people who water that greatness within us,
  • 00:14:58.060 --> 00:15:01.080
  • the people we have around our lives,
  • 00:15:01.090 --> 00:15:03.130
  • you know, I think those people are important.
  • 00:15:03.140 --> 00:15:04.290
  • I think it's important for, you know,
  • 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:06.150
  • our, who's listening to us today to realize,
  • 00:15:06.160 --> 00:15:08.280
  • "We've got to position ourselves
  • 00:15:08.290 --> 00:15:10.080
  • where people can water our lives."
  • 00:15:10.090 --> 00:15:12.040
  • Roma: Yes, that's right.
  • 00:15:12.050 --> 00:15:13.270
  • We absolutely do have to do that,
  • 00:15:13.280 --> 00:15:16.020
  • and we have to position ourselves also
  • 00:15:16.030 --> 00:15:18.200
  • to be the waterers, you know?
  • 00:15:18.210 --> 00:15:21.050
  • I had the good fortune when I was a young woman in college,
  • 00:15:21.060 --> 00:15:27.210
  • I got accepted to go to drama school,
  • 00:15:27.220 --> 00:15:30.290
  • which was a dream of mine.
  • 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:32.240
  • I loved theater and I loved the arts,
  • 00:15:32.250 --> 00:15:36.260
  • and, you know, even though I wasn't able to get a grant to go
  • 00:15:36.270 --> 00:15:46.130
  • to the school, you know, my heart had been set
  • 00:15:46.140 --> 00:15:48.280
  • on this schooling.
  • 00:15:48.290 --> 00:15:50.110
  • And these people in the community that I was working in,
  • 00:15:50.120 --> 00:15:56.060
  • three people, three angels came together and offered
  • 00:15:56.070 --> 00:16:02.120
  • to put the money up for me to go to this school.
  • 00:16:02.130 --> 00:16:06.100
  • And, you know, they came and they spoke to me
  • 00:16:06.110 --> 00:16:09.080
  • and to my father to offer this kindness.
  • 00:16:09.090 --> 00:16:13.010
  • And my father said, "Well, we wouldn't be able to repay that,
  • 00:16:13.020 --> 00:16:16.290
  • and so we couldn't accept that."
  • 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:19.070
  • And they said, "Oh, no, we're not loaning you this.
  • 00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:25.030
  • We want to gift this to you, and we see it as an investment in
  • 00:16:25.040 --> 00:16:30.220
  • you, investment in your daughter," they said to my dad.
  • 00:16:30.230 --> 00:16:34.000
  • "And with a condition that she, at some point in her life,
  • 00:16:34.010 --> 00:16:39.100
  • will return that kindness to somebody else."
  • 00:16:39.110 --> 00:16:42.120
  • And so that they watered big time.
  • 00:16:42.130 --> 00:16:45.090
  • And by stepping up into believing in me,
  • 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:48.110
  • really, it was as much that somebody believed
  • 00:16:48.120 --> 00:16:51.120
  • that much in me that it created a confidence, I guess,
  • 00:16:51.130 --> 00:16:57.100
  • or, you know, that I started to believe that I might be able to
  • 00:16:57.110 --> 00:17:01.210
  • fulfill those dreams.
  • 00:17:01.220 --> 00:17:03.120
  • And it put me on a journey that brought me,
  • 00:17:03.130 --> 00:17:06.240
  • you know, to this moment, to this place in my life where
  • 00:17:06.250 --> 00:17:10.040
  • I'm also able to use, you know, the gifts that I've been given,
  • 00:17:10.050 --> 00:17:14.170
  • and the life that I've had to, in turn,
  • 00:17:14.180 --> 00:17:19.150
  • try to inspire other people.
  • 00:17:19.160 --> 00:17:21.290
  • Bobbie: That really is the essence of the Colour message
  • 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:23.240
  • because, for me, the God whisper that set in motion my response
  • 00:17:23.250 --> 00:17:29.000
  • and obedience to this movement of women and what it's become
  • 00:17:29.010 --> 00:17:33.190
  • was because I thought it was from heaven.
  • 00:17:33.200 --> 00:17:35.160
  • Heaven that said, "Tell them, tell them two things.
  • 00:17:35.170 --> 00:17:37.270
  • Tell them, number one, that there's a God in heaven who
  • 00:17:37.280 --> 00:17:40.020
  • believes in them 'cause people need to hear that.
  • 00:17:40.030 --> 00:17:42.150
  • And second, that they're not alone,
  • 00:17:42.160 --> 00:17:44.020
  • that there's a company of others who believe in them also."
  • 00:17:44.030 --> 00:17:47.010
  • And I think that has been the power of testimony
  • 00:17:47.020 --> 00:17:49.290
  • of the greater Sisterhood.
  • 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:51.100
  • Because, again, God works through people.
  • 00:17:51.110 --> 00:17:54.130
  • And so, you know, there may very well be someone listening right
  • 00:17:54.140 --> 00:17:57.040
  • now and, you know, the Spirit of God has been prompting them to
  • 00:17:57.050 --> 00:18:00.110
  • make an investment into another life,
  • 00:18:00.120 --> 00:18:03.030
  • into a young life, into someone else,
  • 00:18:03.040 --> 00:18:05.010
  • and give them that step up or give them that encouragement,
  • 00:18:05.020 --> 00:18:09.050
  • just like someone did to you.
  • 00:18:09.060 --> 00:18:10.170
  • Because look at the fruit of your life.
  • 00:18:10.180 --> 00:18:12.110
  • Roma: No, I know, amazing.
  • 00:18:12.120 --> 00:18:13.210
  • Bobbie: The fruit of your life is--
  • 00:18:13.220 --> 00:18:15.010
  • Roma: You never know what moment it is
  • 00:18:15.020 --> 00:18:17.280
  • that what you say or what you've done,
  • 00:18:17.290 --> 00:18:20.230
  • you've no idea the impact that might make in somebody's life,
  • 00:18:20.240 --> 00:18:24.220
  • you know?
  • 00:18:24.230 --> 00:18:26.020
  • You and I have rather public lives.
  • 00:18:26.030 --> 00:18:28.280
  • And the bold steps that we've taken through our work,
  • 00:18:28.290 --> 00:18:33.120
  • empowered by God, and inspired by God,
  • 00:18:33.130 --> 00:18:37.020
  • have been big things.
  • 00:18:37.030 --> 00:18:39.020
  • But, you know, it can be little things done with big love.
  • 00:18:39.030 --> 00:18:44.090
  • Roma: You know, I can't pretend that if I get a bad
  • 00:18:47.180 --> 00:18:49.230
  • review or a film isn't well received,
  • 00:18:49.240 --> 00:18:52.130
  • or somebody isn't--that it doesn't hurt.
  • 00:18:52.140 --> 00:18:55.080
  • While the temptation might be to lie on the couch eating bonbons,
  • 00:18:55.090 --> 00:19:00.130
  • you know, for the next 10 years, you gotta get yourself,
  • 00:19:00.140 --> 00:19:04.280
  • you know, up, you gotta dust yourself down,
  • 00:19:04.290 --> 00:19:08.020
  • and you gotta keep moving forward.
  • 00:19:08.030 --> 00:19:10.100
  • Bobbie: Colour Conference is a conference hosted by
  • 00:19:19.000 --> 00:19:21.120
  • Hillsong Church in a number of major cities around the world.
  • 00:19:21.130 --> 00:19:25.110
  • But it is so much more than a mere weekend
  • 00:19:25.120 --> 00:19:28.050
  • or getaway with girlfriends.
  • 00:19:28.060 --> 00:19:30.010
  • It has become a global movement of change.
  • 00:19:30.020 --> 00:19:33.100
  • Everyday women, united in friendship and cause,
  • 00:19:33.110 --> 00:19:36.100
  • with a vision to see women empowered to believe
  • 00:19:36.110 --> 00:19:39.010
  • in the potential that not only lies within themselves,
  • 00:19:39.020 --> 00:19:42.090
  • but in others also.
  • 00:19:42.100 --> 00:19:43.270
  • We're 21 years into this Colour journey,
  • 00:19:43.280 --> 00:19:46.060
  • and have seen this diverse and fabulous host of girls bring
  • 00:19:46.070 --> 00:19:49.200
  • solution and help to multitudes in need,
  • 00:19:49.210 --> 00:19:52.200
  • whether on a local or global front.
  • 00:19:52.210 --> 00:19:55.150
  • My heart is that all women of all ages and all backgrounds
  • 00:19:55.160 --> 00:20:00.020
  • will feel encouraged and believed in because the feminine
  • 00:20:00.030 --> 00:20:03.160
  • heart, unlocked, watered, and flourishing,
  • 00:20:03.170 --> 00:20:06.270
  • is a formidable and beautiful force,
  • 00:20:06.280 --> 00:20:09.180
  • a force that this broken and lost world
  • 00:20:09.190 --> 00:20:12.060
  • desperately needs to see.
  • 00:20:12.070 --> 00:20:14.020
  • 00:20:14.030 --> 00:20:19.160
  • Roma: As a young child, my dad used to say
  • 00:20:19.170 --> 00:20:23.150
  • that we had to get up off the couch and go do something
  • 00:20:23.160 --> 00:20:26.140
  • for somebody else, you know?
  • 00:20:26.150 --> 00:20:28.080
  • So, from the time we were very young,
  • 00:20:28.090 --> 00:20:30.090
  • I think that we had an awareness that love was a verb and that,
  • 00:20:30.100 --> 00:20:38.220
  • you know, that, "Don't just say it,
  • 00:20:38.230 --> 00:20:41.060
  • you know, do something."
  • 00:20:41.070 --> 00:20:43.030
  • It's like, "Take an action."
  • 00:20:43.040 --> 00:20:44.200
  • Bobbie: So, when you're facing,
  • 00:20:44.210 --> 00:20:47.020
  • you know, the challenge, or the wall,
  • 00:20:47.030 --> 00:20:49.030
  • or whatever, where do you first go for that sense of resolve?
  • 00:20:49.040 --> 00:20:52.060
  • What do you remind yourself constantly?
  • 00:20:52.070 --> 00:20:54.140
  • Roma: I'm always reminded to pray.
  • 00:20:54.150 --> 00:20:56.140
  • It's my, you know, and so, a prayer has just been
  • 00:20:56.150 --> 00:21:01.100
  • a great strengthener for me.
  • 00:21:01.110 --> 00:21:03.180
  • And prayer, within community, you know,
  • 00:21:03.190 --> 00:21:06.120
  • I just call, I reach out and ask,
  • 00:21:06.130 --> 00:21:09.180
  • you know, that our community with pray with us
  • 00:21:09.190 --> 00:21:13.110
  • on certain things.
  • 00:21:13.120 --> 00:21:14.280
  • Because what we're doing is so public and judged.
  • 00:21:14.290 --> 00:21:19.250
  • You know, there's such judgment.
  • 00:21:19.260 --> 00:21:21.100
  • The judgment comes in in the form of ratings,
  • 00:21:21.110 --> 00:21:24.030
  • or in the form of box office, or in the form of reviews.
  • 00:21:24.040 --> 00:21:27.200
  • So the feedback in what I do is instantaneous.
  • 00:21:27.210 --> 00:21:31.090
  • And, you know, I can't pretend that if I get a bad review,
  • 00:21:31.100 --> 00:21:35.120
  • or if our film isn't well received,
  • 00:21:35.130 --> 00:21:38.020
  • or somebody isn't--that it doesn't hurt, that I'm not,
  • 00:21:38.030 --> 00:21:41.030
  • you know, locked in the bathroom,
  • 00:21:41.040 --> 00:21:43.280
  • you know, having a wee cry or, you know,
  • 00:21:43.290 --> 00:21:47.110
  • doing all the things that we do.
  • 00:21:47.120 --> 00:21:49.020
  • Of course you do.
  • 00:21:49.030 --> 00:21:50.120
  • But the difference is that you don't--you know,
  • 00:21:50.130 --> 00:21:52.110
  • while the temptation might be to lie on the couch eating bonbons,
  • 00:21:52.120 --> 00:21:57.160
  • you know, for the next 10 years, you gotta get yourself,
  • 00:21:57.170 --> 00:22:02.040
  • you know, up, you gotta dust yourself down,
  • 00:22:02.050 --> 00:22:05.060
  • and you gotta keep moving forward.
  • 00:22:05.070 --> 00:22:07.010
  • Years ago, when I was on "Touched by An Angel," I was in
  • 00:22:07.020 --> 00:22:10.150
  • a shop, and a woman came up to me,
  • 00:22:10.160 --> 00:22:13.090
  • and she had very fresh scars on her wrist where,
  • 00:22:13.100 --> 00:22:17.010
  • clearly, she had tried to take her own life.
  • 00:22:17.020 --> 00:22:19.230
  • And she said she was so angry with God,
  • 00:22:19.240 --> 00:22:21.240
  • she felt so abandoned and alone, and she was very lonely.
  • 00:22:21.250 --> 00:22:27.020
  • And in her isolation, she decided to take her own life.
  • 00:22:27.030 --> 00:22:30.290
  • And the door was open to the bedroom,
  • 00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:33.050
  • and the television was on.
  • 00:22:33.060 --> 00:22:35.280
  • And the television came on, coincidentally,
  • 00:22:35.290 --> 00:22:38.280
  • to a scene where the angel was saying exactly,
  • 00:22:38.290 --> 00:22:44.100
  • "You are not alone.
  • 00:22:44.110 --> 00:22:46.170
  • Don't you know that you've never been alone?
  • 00:22:46.180 --> 00:22:49.260
  • Because God is with you, and loves you,
  • 00:22:49.270 --> 00:22:53.030
  • and he's always been with you."
  • 00:22:53.040 --> 00:22:54.200
  • And she said she just, like, looked up.
  • 00:22:54.210 --> 00:22:57.240
  • She felt it pierce her darkness.
  • 00:22:57.250 --> 00:23:00.020
  • She grabbed a towel, and she called for an ambulance.
  • 00:23:00.030 --> 00:23:04.210
  • And she then was able to reach out to get the help that she
  • 00:23:04.220 --> 00:23:08.250
  • needed, and she ended up giving her life to Jesus.
  • 00:23:08.260 --> 00:23:13.110
  • Now, that's one person from one show,
  • 00:23:13.120 --> 00:23:16.150
  • and I know that there were many more like that.
  • 00:23:16.160 --> 00:23:20.040
  • And I would take those stories back to my crew 'cause,
  • 00:23:20.050 --> 00:23:23.170
  • you know, I had the privilege of being the angel messenger.
  • 00:23:23.180 --> 00:23:28.070
  • But there were hundreds of people who worked,
  • 00:23:28.080 --> 00:23:30.140
  • the lightning, the camera guys, you know,
  • 00:23:30.150 --> 00:23:33.120
  • everybody that works.
  • 00:23:33.130 --> 00:23:34.230
  • And I would come back 'cause everybody's working long days,
  • 00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:37.180
  • and I would share these stories to say,
  • 00:23:37.190 --> 00:23:39.270
  • "You know, we're puttin' in long hours,
  • 00:23:39.280 --> 00:23:41.200
  • but we're doing God's work here, you know.
  • 00:23:41.210 --> 00:23:44.110
  • We may never know the people.
  • 00:23:44.120 --> 00:23:45.290
  • This is one story, but we may never know whose lives
  • 00:23:46.000 --> 00:23:48.290
  • are being changed."
  • 00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:50.090
  • So, those are the moments, Bobbie, for me,
  • 00:23:50.100 --> 00:23:52.030
  • that encourage me when the reviews aren't good,
  • 00:23:52.040 --> 00:23:55.140
  • or when somebody, in their cynicism,
  • 00:23:55.150 --> 00:23:58.240
  • thinks that what we're doing is redundant or,
  • 00:23:58.250 --> 00:24:02.020
  • you know, has a negative opinion about it.
  • 00:24:02.030 --> 00:24:04.130
  • Because I know that, you know, that God will use this work
  • 00:24:04.140 --> 00:24:08.230
  • to reach the lost.
  • 00:24:08.240 --> 00:24:10.100
  • Bobbie: And that's what is lovely about the days in which
  • 00:24:10.110 --> 00:24:12.110
  • we are living, because we are realizing it's not--influence is
  • 00:24:12.120 --> 00:24:16.280
  • not only the domain of, for want of a better word,
  • 00:24:16.290 --> 00:24:20.130
  • the rich or the famous or the privileged.
  • 00:24:20.140 --> 00:24:22.110
  • Actually, it belongs to everyone.
  • 00:24:22.120 --> 00:24:24.140
  • And I think this movement of Sisterhood on the earth today,
  • 00:24:24.150 --> 00:24:28.030
  • it is about the everyday girls.
  • 00:24:28.040 --> 00:24:29.260
  • And for me, I can manage that.
  • 00:24:29.270 --> 00:24:31.100
  • I can walk with that because I don't perceive myself as
  • 00:24:31.110 --> 00:24:35.160
  • anything but an everyday girl.
  • 00:24:35.170 --> 00:24:37.110
  • I think neither do you when it's all peeled back.
  • 00:24:37.120 --> 00:24:39.220
  • So, what can the girls, the Sisterhood,
  • 00:24:39.230 --> 00:24:42.090
  • how can the girls pray for you?
  • 00:24:42.100 --> 00:24:45.010
  • Roma: Well, I would appreciate if the sisters could
  • 00:24:45.020 --> 00:24:49.070
  • pray for, you know, the ministry that is our work with Light TV
  • 00:24:49.080 --> 00:24:54.240
  • and Lightworkers, that we will continue to create hope-filled
  • 00:24:54.250 --> 00:24:59.260
  • and inspiring content, that our team would be strengthened and
  • 00:24:59.270 --> 00:25:06.080
  • inspired with creativity in new ways to reach people,
  • 00:25:06.090 --> 00:25:11.170
  • to reach through the darkness and to remind people that
  • 00:25:11.180 --> 00:25:14.180
  • they're not alone, that God loves them.
  • 00:25:14.190 --> 00:25:16.160
  • Bobbie: Well, I'm sure thousands of them will commit to do that.
  • 00:25:16.170 --> 00:25:19.120
  • Thank you so much, gorgeous.
  • 00:25:19.130 --> 00:25:21.100
  • Roma: Thank you so much, thank you.
  • 00:25:21.110 --> 00:25:23.110
  • Bobbie: Next week in the green room,
  • 00:25:25.140 --> 00:25:27.040
  • we have Lina Nielsen.
  • 00:25:27.050 --> 00:25:29.120
  • She and her husband, Andreas, are the lead pastors
  • 00:25:29.130 --> 00:25:32.020
  • of Hillsong Church Sweden.
  • 00:25:32.030 --> 00:25:33.270
  • She chats to Sarah and Niyah about growing up with missionary
  • 00:25:33.280 --> 00:25:37.110
  • parents, finding her feet as a pastor in a very secular
  • 00:25:37.120 --> 00:25:41.130
  • European city, and learning to trust God with the challenges
  • 00:25:41.140 --> 00:25:45.020
  • of a critically sick little girl.
  • 00:25:45.030 --> 00:25:47.270
  • I know you're gonna love this beautiful,
  • 00:25:47.280 --> 00:25:49.230
  • soft-spoken, and yet strong young woman.
  • 00:25:49.240 --> 00:25:53.160
  • 00:25:53.170 --> 00:25:59.020
