  • Brian Houston: I love talking to fascinating people.
  • 00:00:03.110 --> 00:00:04.100
  • And today, I get to speak to DeVon Franklin,
  • 00:00:04.110 --> 00:00:06.270
  • award-winning producer, bestselling author,
  • 00:00:06.280 --> 00:00:10.030
  • renowned preacher, motivational speaker.
  • 00:00:10.040 --> 00:00:13.160
  • We're talking about his journey to faith.
  • 00:00:13.170 --> 00:00:16.190
  • DeVon Franklin: And so, I go to the bathroom.
  • 00:00:16.200 --> 00:00:17.290
  • I go in the stall, and me and God have it out.
  • 00:00:18.000 --> 00:00:20.150
  • So I said, "Lord, right now, in the name of Jesus,
  • 00:00:20.160 --> 00:00:22.180
  • I'm standing on your Word.
  • 00:00:22.190 --> 00:00:24.040
  • Move on this job today if you are who you say you are."
  • 00:00:24.050 --> 00:00:27.140
  • Brian: We talk about race relations
  • 00:00:27.150 --> 00:00:28.240
  • in the United States of America.
  • 00:00:28.250 --> 00:00:30.180
  • DeVon: I'm tired of the same racial issues that we have
  • 00:00:30.190 --> 00:00:33.260
  • in America being reflected in the church,
  • 00:00:33.270 --> 00:00:36.050
  • and I think that it's time that, as a church,
  • 00:00:36.060 --> 00:00:38.220
  • we do what God says.
  • 00:00:38.230 --> 00:00:40.080
  • Brian: We're talking about navigating Hollywood
  • 00:00:40.090 --> 00:00:42.010
  • and temptation.
  • 00:00:42.020 --> 00:00:43.140
  • DeVon: For me, the road to becoming successful in Hollywood
  • 00:00:43.150 --> 00:00:46.190
  • is certainly filled with temptation,
  • 00:00:46.200 --> 00:00:47.290
  • but not because it's Hollywood.
  • 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:49.220
  • It's because that's my desire.
  • 00:00:49.230 --> 00:00:51.290
  • Brian: I'm Brian Houston, let's talk.
  • 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.100
  • 00:00:54.150 --> 00:01:04.170
  • 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:14.200
  • Brian: Well, on this show, I get to talk to some great
  • 00:01:17.200 --> 00:01:19.200
  • people, and I love finding out about people.
  • 00:01:19.210 --> 00:01:22.040
  • So today, I'm excited 'cause I've got with me here
  • 00:01:22.050 --> 00:01:24.030
  • DeVon Franklin.
  • 00:01:24.040 --> 00:01:26.050
  • And I'm looking forward to having a big chat to you
  • 00:01:26.060 --> 00:01:28.120
  • about life and all you do, so welcome.
  • 00:01:28.130 --> 00:01:31.070
  • DeVon: No, thank you, thanks for havin' me.
  • 00:01:31.080 --> 00:01:32.170
  • So glad to be here.
  • 00:01:32.180 --> 00:01:34.070
  • Brian: All right, so, award-winning movie producer,
  • 00:01:34.080 --> 00:01:38.230
  • bestselling author, phenomenal preacher,
  • 00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:43.000
  • motivational speaker, are you sure there's only one of you?
  • 00:01:43.010 --> 00:01:46.080
  • DeVon: Yes, I'm sure, but sometimes it feels like
  • 00:01:46.090 --> 00:01:49.110
  • there are more.
  • 00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:50.230
  • You know, you know how it is.
  • 00:01:50.240 --> 00:01:52.030
  • You know, God has you doin' so many different things.
  • 00:01:52.040 --> 00:01:53.280
  • I'm just like, "All right, Lord, I wanna use every gift
  • 00:01:53.290 --> 00:01:55.260
  • you gave me.
  • 00:01:55.270 --> 00:01:57.060
  • I wanna put it use."
  • 00:01:57.070 --> 00:01:58.160
  • So that's my attempt to try and do that.
  • 00:01:58.170 --> 00:02:00.230
  • Brian: Well, obviously, you're doing it well.
  • 00:02:00.240 --> 00:02:03.120
  • DeVon: Thank you, thank you.
  • 00:02:03.130 --> 00:02:04.220
  • Brian: But those worlds that you have,
  • 00:02:04.230 --> 00:02:06.020
  • like the side of you that loves to speak and to preach,
  • 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:08.130
  • and to build people's lives, and then to be in Hollywood,
  • 00:02:08.140 --> 00:02:12.000
  • do the two conflict, or do they work beautifully together?
  • 00:02:12.010 --> 00:02:15.060
  • DeVon: They work great together because when you look
  • 00:02:15.070 --> 00:02:17.220
  • at a movie or look at a television show,
  • 00:02:17.230 --> 00:02:20.160
  • the result and the impact of that show is fundamentally
  • 00:02:20.170 --> 00:02:24.050
  • based upon, is somebody being touched by it?
  • 00:02:24.060 --> 00:02:27.270
  • The speaking side, it's the same thing.
  • 00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:29.110
  • I mean, you know.
  • 00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:30.210
  • It's like, you know, when you're in front of an audience and
  • 00:02:30.220 --> 00:02:32.020
  • you're there, you're trying to impact them in a positive way
  • 00:02:32.030 --> 00:02:35.070
  • so they leave doing something different they otherwise
  • 00:02:35.080 --> 00:02:37.120
  • may not have.
  • 00:02:37.130 --> 00:02:38.230
  • So, at the end of the day, for me,
  • 00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:40.170
  • all the different things that I do is still knit together
  • 00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:43.140
  • by the desire to impact people in a positive way.
  • 00:02:43.150 --> 00:02:45.280
  • But the thing that really helps make it work is clarity of
  • 00:02:45.290 --> 00:02:48.260
  • vision and saying--it's not like I'm over here doing one thing
  • 00:02:48.270 --> 00:02:51.260
  • and over here doing another thing.
  • 00:02:51.270 --> 00:02:53.140
  • It's the same wheel, just different spokes.
  • 00:02:53.150 --> 00:02:56.020
  • And that core is empowerment, motivation, inspiration,
  • 00:02:56.030 --> 00:03:00.290
  • faith, hope.
  • 00:03:01.000 --> 00:03:02.120
  • And anything that does not align with that, we don't do it.
  • 00:03:02.130 --> 00:03:05.170
  • Brian: Sure, you come across as super confident.
  • 00:03:05.180 --> 00:03:07.250
  • Have you always been confident?
  • 00:03:07.260 --> 00:03:09.180
  • DeVon: Mm, that's actually a result of being a middle child.
  • 00:03:09.190 --> 00:03:12.120
  • [laughing]
  • 00:03:12.130 --> 00:03:13.220
  • Brian: Really? Me too, by the way.
  • 00:03:13.230 --> 00:03:15.020
  • DeVon: Oh, is that right?
  • 00:03:15.030 --> 00:03:16.120
  • Yeah, we got a support group after this, okay?
  • 00:03:16.130 --> 00:03:17.220
  • Because, you know, growing up as a middle child,
  • 00:03:17.230 --> 00:03:19.070
  • you know, I felt like I was always fighting for my place and
  • 00:03:19.080 --> 00:03:21.230
  • fighting for validation and trying to figure out where
  • 00:03:21.240 --> 00:03:24.120
  • I fit.
  • 00:03:24.130 --> 00:03:25.220
  • So, my confidence when I was younger,
  • 00:03:25.230 --> 00:03:28.050
  • I didn't have a lot of confidence necessarily.
  • 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:30.170
  • I had a temper, to be honest with you.
  • 00:03:30.180 --> 00:03:32.090
  • You know, I was, you know, very frustrated and
  • 00:03:32.100 --> 00:03:34.060
  • didn't really like how things were goin'.
  • 00:03:34.070 --> 00:03:36.180
  • When I was 9 years old, my father passed away of a heart
  • 00:03:36.190 --> 00:03:39.180
  • attack when he was 36 years old.
  • 00:03:39.190 --> 00:03:41.150
  • He had been an alcoholic for the majority of his life,
  • 00:03:41.160 --> 00:03:44.150
  • at least, the life that I got to share with him.
  • 00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:46.230
  • And so, I had a lot of anger.
  • 00:03:46.240 --> 00:03:48.170
  • And it wasn't until, you know, my teenage years when
  • 00:03:48.180 --> 00:03:51.140
  • I really had a chance to process some of that.
  • 00:03:51.150 --> 00:03:53.160
  • And what I really wanted to do was,
  • 00:03:53.170 --> 00:03:56.070
  • like, okay, how do I find my place and prove to myself
  • 00:03:56.080 --> 00:04:00.100
  • that I'm worth something?
  • 00:04:00.110 --> 00:04:02.220
  • And as I've gotten older, you know,
  • 00:04:02.230 --> 00:04:04.220
  • you realize that there's nothing external that can fill
  • 00:04:04.230 --> 00:04:08.160
  • whatever hole is inside.
  • 00:04:08.170 --> 00:04:11.080
  • And so, I'm out here tryin' to get achievement to validate.
  • 00:04:11.090 --> 00:04:15.170
  • It doesn't work that way.
  • 00:04:15.180 --> 00:04:17.030
  • And what I had to realize is that I gotta find validation
  • 00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:19.120
  • within.
  • 00:04:19.130 --> 00:04:20.230
  • And if I don't do that, then I'm always gonna be empty.
  • 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:23.140
  • And so as I began to put myself through a process to try and
  • 00:04:23.150 --> 00:04:25.260
  • heal those wounds from the past and just know that I'm okay,
  • 00:04:25.270 --> 00:04:28.180
  • so much of the success that I've had has come out of
  • 00:04:28.190 --> 00:04:32.040
  • that process, not just pursuing success in and of itself.
  • 00:04:32.050 --> 00:04:36.120
  • Brian: Right, so let's go back to your childhood.
  • 00:04:36.130 --> 00:04:38.080
  • You grew up whereabouts in--?
  • 00:04:38.090 --> 00:04:40.080
  • DeVon: I grew up in Northern California.
  • 00:04:40.090 --> 00:04:41.230
  • Brian: Northern California, huh?
  • 00:04:41.240 --> 00:04:43.060
  • DeVon: Yes, when I first grew up,
  • 00:04:43.070 --> 00:04:45.150
  • we grew up in the suburbs.
  • 00:04:45.160 --> 00:04:46.250
  • And so my father, at the time, was a manager at UPS,
  • 00:04:46.260 --> 00:04:49.190
  • and, you know, we basically had the American dream,
  • 00:04:49.200 --> 00:04:52.110
  • you know, the house, we had the car.
  • 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:54.290
  • Brian: So, he did good at UPS?
  • 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:56.090
  • DeVon: He did good. Here was the downside.
  • 00:04:56.100 --> 00:04:59.110
  • He was so successful at UPS, one of the things that he felt that
  • 00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:02.100
  • he needed to do because drinking was a part of this social
  • 00:05:02.110 --> 00:05:05.220
  • structure, whereas my father, his father was an alcoholic.
  • 00:05:05.230 --> 00:05:11.010
  • So, as he began to find success at UPS and he would go out
  • 00:05:11.020 --> 00:05:14.070
  • after work and began to drink, the thing that was in him
  • 00:05:14.080 --> 00:05:17.110
  • from his dad got active.
  • 00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:20.030
  • And so he began to drink and drink and drink more,
  • 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:23.040
  • so much so, not only did he lose his job,
  • 00:05:23.050 --> 00:05:25.040
  • but we ended up losin' the house.
  • 00:05:25.050 --> 00:05:26.190
  • So we had to move from the suburbs into the city.
  • 00:05:26.200 --> 00:05:29.080
  • And we ended up living with my grandparents,
  • 00:05:29.090 --> 00:05:31.150
  • and there was not enough room in my grandparents' house,
  • 00:05:31.160 --> 00:05:34.120
  • so they ended up sleeping in the motor home that they had
  • 00:05:34.130 --> 00:05:37.060
  • in the driveway.
  • 00:05:37.070 --> 00:05:38.160
  • And me, my mother, and my brothers all slept in one bed
  • 00:05:38.170 --> 00:05:41.240
  • in their bedroom.
  • 00:05:41.250 --> 00:05:43.130
  • And so that was the majority of our upbringing.
  • 00:05:43.140 --> 00:05:45.280
  • And then finally, you know, my mother was able to make
  • 00:05:45.290 --> 00:05:47.210
  • enough money, and she ended up moving us into an apartment,
  • 00:05:47.220 --> 00:05:50.090
  • two-bedroom apartment.
  • 00:05:50.100 --> 00:05:51.190
  • So my upbringing was definitely informed by the economics
  • 00:05:51.200 --> 00:05:55.020
  • and the tragedy of losin' my dad.
  • 00:05:55.030 --> 00:05:58.030
  • Brian: Yeah, so he lost his job.
  • 00:05:58.040 --> 00:05:59.190
  • You lost your house. And then you lost your dad.
  • 00:05:59.200 --> 00:06:01.280
  • So did you grow up with a big sense of loss?
  • 00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:04.170
  • DeVon: Definitely, I mean, I was so,
  • 00:06:04.180 --> 00:06:06.110
  • you know, shaken up about his loss,
  • 00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:09.240
  • losing him, that I didn't even wanna go to the funeral.
  • 00:06:09.250 --> 00:06:12.210
  • And so I definitely felt, you know, that sense of loss.
  • 00:06:12.220 --> 00:06:15.120
  • Even now, it's great to have success,
  • 00:06:15.130 --> 00:06:18.070
  • and things are goin' really well, but I think,
  • 00:06:18.080 --> 00:06:19.270
  • "Oh, man, what would my dad say?"
  • 00:06:19.280 --> 00:06:21.270
  • You know, "What would he think if he comes in my office
  • 00:06:21.280 --> 00:06:23.230
  • and he sees, 'Franklin Entertainment,'
  • 00:06:23.240 --> 00:06:25.110
  • you know, on the door?
  • 00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:26.210
  • How would that make him feel?
  • 00:06:26.220 --> 00:06:28.070
  • You know, would he be proud of me?
  • 00:06:28.080 --> 00:06:29.250
  • Would he think that I've done a good job?"
  • 00:06:29.260 --> 00:06:31.190
  • 'Cause that's all we want. We just wanna know--
  • 00:06:31.200 --> 00:06:33.040
  • Brian: I have a feeling the answer would be,
  • 00:06:33.050 --> 00:06:34.140
  • "Yes," by the way.
  • 00:06:34.150 --> 00:06:35.240
  • DeVon: I hope so.
  • 00:06:35.250 --> 00:06:37.040
  • Thank you for that. Thank you, I appreciate that.
  • 00:06:37.050 --> 00:06:38.240
  • Brian: So, where'd the God part come into it?
  • 00:06:38.250 --> 00:06:40.140
  • DeVon: You know, as a kid, we were--I mean,
  • 00:06:40.150 --> 00:06:42.250
  • my mother kept us in church from as long as I can remember.
  • 00:06:42.260 --> 00:06:46.260
  • So, you know, as a kid, you just go to church.
  • 00:06:46.270 --> 00:06:48.120
  • You know, it's like, "Okay, cool, this is what you do."
  • 00:06:48.130 --> 00:06:50.130
  • And it really wasn't until my early teens when I began
  • 00:06:50.140 --> 00:06:54.020
  • to develop a personal relationship with God.
  • 00:06:54.030 --> 00:06:57.100
  • Brian: Was there a catalyst in that?
  • 00:06:57.110 --> 00:06:59.170
  • DeVon: You know what?
  • 00:06:59.180 --> 00:07:00.290
  • The catalyst was the same year that my father died,
  • 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:04.150
  • my uncle, who was a minister in the Adventist faith,
  • 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:08.030
  • started an independent ministry.
  • 00:07:08.040 --> 00:07:10.050
  • And so, being a part of that ministry was a turning point.
  • 00:07:10.060 --> 00:07:13.160
  • And for me, I was one of those kids that I really believed.
  • 00:07:13.170 --> 00:07:17.170
  • Like, you know, I was like, "Okay, well,
  • 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:19.090
  • if the Bible says this, then that's not what
  • 00:07:19.100 --> 00:07:21.020
  • we're gonna--we're gonna do what it says."
  • 00:07:21.030 --> 00:07:23.000
  • "Oh, DeVon, you're bein' too, you know, strict."
  • 00:07:23.010 --> 00:07:25.040
  • They would call me an L7.
  • 00:07:25.050 --> 00:07:26.140
  • You know, they called me a square.
  • 00:07:26.150 --> 00:07:27.240
  • I'm like, "You know what? I'll be square.
  • 00:07:27.250 --> 00:07:29.040
  • But if this is what God says, that's what I'm gonna do."
  • 00:07:29.050 --> 00:07:31.140
  • And as I got older, as much as I believed in the Word,
  • 00:07:31.150 --> 00:07:35.080
  • I also still had a desire to go to Hollywood.
  • 00:07:35.090 --> 00:07:38.000
  • Watching films like "Rocky," you know,
  • 00:07:38.010 --> 00:07:40.050
  • which is my favorite franchise, okay?
  • 00:07:40.060 --> 00:07:43.020
  • I mean, seriously.
  • 00:07:43.030 --> 00:07:44.120
  • Brian: I get inspired just thinking about it.
  • 00:07:44.130 --> 00:07:45.220
  • DeVon: Right?
  • 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:47.020
  • Exactly, and so, like, films like that,
  • 00:07:47.030 --> 00:07:48.120
  • films like, "The Color Purple," films like,
  • 00:07:48.130 --> 00:07:49.220
  • "Back to the Future," inspired me.
  • 00:07:49.230 --> 00:07:51.070
  • So even though I was in church, I still was like,
  • 00:07:51.080 --> 00:07:54.140
  • "Wait, how do I become a part of this system that can produce
  • 00:07:54.150 --> 00:07:58.090
  • such an impact in your life?"
  • 00:07:58.100 --> 00:08:01.010
  • And when I would share that with people in the church,
  • 00:08:01.020 --> 00:08:03.160
  • they were like, "No, you can't do that.
  • 00:08:03.170 --> 00:08:05.220
  • That's Sodom and Gomorrah. That's the devil's playground."
  • 00:08:05.230 --> 00:08:07.290
  • But I'm like, "Wait a minute.
  • 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:09.090
  • You're teachin' me every weekend,
  • 00:08:09.100 --> 00:08:11.260
  • 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.'
  • 00:08:11.270 --> 00:08:13.240
  • You're teachin' me I'm supposed to,
  • 00:08:13.250 --> 00:08:15.050
  • 'Walk by faith, not by sight.'
  • 00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:16.190
  • So, you're teaching me that what the Bible says works,
  • 00:08:16.200 --> 00:08:19.160
  • but then, when it comes to living,
  • 00:08:19.170 --> 00:08:21.040
  • you're teaching me fear."
  • 00:08:21.050 --> 00:08:22.260
  • I said, "You gotta tell me what works.
  • 00:08:22.270 --> 00:08:24.120
  • It's either faith or fear, and I'm gonna believe the Word.
  • 00:08:24.130 --> 00:08:27.120
  • And I ask you to pray for me 'cause I have to go where
  • 00:08:27.130 --> 00:08:29.280
  • God is calling me.
  • 00:08:29.290 --> 00:08:31.130
  • But what I don't wanna do is to alter my life based upon
  • 00:08:31.140 --> 00:08:34.250
  • your direction.
  • 00:08:34.260 --> 00:08:36.050
  • Because if I please you and I don't please God,
  • 00:08:36.060 --> 00:08:38.270
  • how can I live with that?"
  • 00:08:38.280 --> 00:08:40.070
  • And that was really the motivation to,
  • 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:42.190
  • you know, go to Hollywood.
  • 00:08:42.200 --> 00:08:43.290
  • And I knew I wanted to be in Hollywood.
  • 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:45.090
  • We're talkin' from like 5 and 6 years old.
  • 00:08:45.100 --> 00:08:47.240
  • I mean, I had tunnel vision.
  • 00:08:47.250 --> 00:08:49.260
  • It was all about trying to make it in this system.
  • 00:08:49.270 --> 00:08:52.200
  • Yet, it was also, "Can I do it the way God is calling me?"
  • 00:08:52.210 --> 00:08:56.110
  • There was never something in my spirit that said,
  • 00:08:56.120 --> 00:08:58.010
  • "Oh, I just want Hollywood just for Hollywood's sake."
  • 00:08:58.020 --> 00:09:00.080
  • I really knew that I wanted to be a part of it because
  • 00:09:00.090 --> 00:09:02.290
  • I wanted to make change.
  • 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:04.240
  • Because if movies and television could make the impact they had
  • 00:09:04.250 --> 00:09:07.210
  • on me as a kid who lost his dad at 9 years old and gave me hope,
  • 00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:11.230
  • if they could do that for me, then I believed they could do
  • 00:09:11.240 --> 00:09:13.280
  • that for others, and I wanted to be a part of that.
  • 00:09:13.290 --> 00:09:16.140
  • Brian: Coming up next:
  • 00:09:17.220 --> 00:09:20.010
  • DeVon: When Jesus returns and we stand before God,
  • 00:09:20.020 --> 00:09:23.010
  • is he gonna say, "Were you Democrat or Republican?"
  • 00:09:23.020 --> 00:09:26.060
  • No, he's gonna say, "What did you do to the least of these?"
  • 00:09:26.070 --> 00:09:29.120
  • Brian: So, what was your first early break?
  • 00:09:39.250 --> 00:09:42.260
  • DeVon: Yeah, you know, my first early break, it was early.
  • 00:09:42.270 --> 00:09:46.240
  • I was 18 years old. I went to USC.
  • 00:09:46.250 --> 00:09:49.270
  • Now, USC is home of the world's best film school.
  • 00:09:49.280 --> 00:09:54.030
  • Brian: I thought you were gonna say,
  • 00:09:54.040 --> 00:09:55.130
  • "The world's best football team," for a second there.
  • 00:09:55.140 --> 00:09:58.010
  • DeVon: Well, that's debatable.
  • 00:09:58.020 --> 00:09:59.160
  • No one debates that they have the best film school.
  • 00:09:59.170 --> 00:10:02.060
  • [laughing] So, but I got rejected from the film school
  • 00:10:02.070 --> 00:10:04.280
  • as an undergrad.
  • 00:10:04.290 --> 00:10:06.130
  • But I got accepted general admission to USC.
  • 00:10:06.140 --> 00:10:08.230
  • So I went and visited the campus and I said,
  • 00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:10.090
  • "You know--"
  • 00:10:10.100 --> 00:10:11.190
  • I just felt God was telling me this was the place to go.
  • 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:14.050
  • And I knew I needed to get an internship.
  • 00:10:14.060 --> 00:10:16.160
  • So at 18 years old, I met with that screenwriter.
  • 00:10:16.170 --> 00:10:19.180
  • He said, "You should go get an internship at the management
  • 00:10:19.190 --> 00:10:22.090
  • company that manages Will Smith."
  • 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:24.050
  • I said, "Okay."
  • 00:10:24.060 --> 00:10:25.150
  • So I put in my resume.
  • 00:10:25.160 --> 00:10:26.250
  • They called me in for an interview.
  • 00:10:26.260 --> 00:10:28.050
  • And I go in that first semester of freshman year,
  • 00:10:28.060 --> 00:10:30.160
  • and I sit down, and so she asks me a question.
  • 00:10:30.170 --> 00:10:33.090
  • She said, "Why do you wanna be in entertainment?"
  • 00:10:33.100 --> 00:10:36.050
  • And I said, "I wanna make change."
  • 00:10:36.060 --> 00:10:37.150
  • She said, "You wanna make money?"
  • 00:10:37.160 --> 00:10:38.250
  • I said, "Well, yeah, money's fine,"
  • 00:10:38.260 --> 00:10:40.080
  • I said, "but I'm not talkin' about money.
  • 00:10:40.090 --> 00:10:41.180
  • I'm talkin' about changin' the world."
  • 00:10:41.190 --> 00:10:43.030
  • So I told her, I said, "I believe I can be a part
  • 00:10:43.040 --> 00:10:44.170
  • of entertainment, that I can actually help change
  • 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:46.010
  • people's lives."
  • 00:10:46.020 --> 00:10:47.120
  • And that changed the tone of the interview.
  • 00:10:47.130 --> 00:10:50.070
  • Now, one other thing, as the interview was goin' great,
  • 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:51.290
  • at the end of the interview, she said,
  • 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.190
  • "Is there anything else you want me to know?"
  • 00:10:53.200 --> 00:10:55.230
  • Now, in my mind, I could hear God saying,
  • 00:10:55.240 --> 00:10:58.040
  • "Tell her about the Sabbath."
  • 00:10:58.050 --> 00:10:59.230
  • And I'm sayin', "God, no, I'm not gonna tell her
  • 00:10:59.240 --> 00:11:02.050
  • about the Sabbath.
  • 00:11:02.060 --> 00:11:03.150
  • I'll tell her after I get the internship."
  • 00:11:03.160 --> 00:11:05.090
  • He's like, "Tell her about the Sabbath."
  • 00:11:05.100 --> 00:11:07.140
  • So, I said, "Yeah, there is somethin' I want you to know.
  • 00:11:07.150 --> 00:11:10.280
  • I observe the Sabbath from Friday night sundown
  • 00:11:10.290 --> 00:11:13.160
  • to Saturday night sundown.
  • 00:11:13.170 --> 00:11:15.100
  • If taking this internship would require me to work
  • 00:11:15.110 --> 00:11:17.200
  • on the Sabbath, I won't take it."
  • 00:11:17.210 --> 00:11:20.270
  • And she was like really taken aback, quiet.
  • 00:11:20.280 --> 00:11:22.270
  • And then she said after a moment,
  • 00:11:22.280 --> 00:11:24.290
  • she said, "You know what, DeVon?
  • 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:26.090
  • Don't worry about that. We can work around it."
  • 00:11:26.100 --> 00:11:28.190
  • And so what that told me was, at the very beginning of my career,
  • 00:11:28.200 --> 00:11:33.160
  • that if I just was clear about who I was and what I believed,
  • 00:11:33.170 --> 00:11:37.100
  • that the right doors would open.
  • 00:11:37.110 --> 00:11:39.110
  • Because I think so many times, we have a fear of,
  • 00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:42.050
  • "If I own who I am, am I gonna be limited?"
  • 00:11:42.060 --> 00:11:45.020
  • But my experience has been the exact opposite.
  • 00:11:45.030 --> 00:11:47.200
  • The more I own who I am, the more I own what God has
  • 00:11:47.210 --> 00:11:50.100
  • called me to do, the more that success happens.
  • 00:11:50.110 --> 00:11:52.220
  • So I started that internship, you know,
  • 00:11:52.230 --> 00:11:54.180
  • and the internship was not glamorous at all.
  • 00:11:54.190 --> 00:11:57.060
  • We're talkin' about gettin' coffee.
  • 00:11:57.070 --> 00:11:58.250
  • We're talkin' about gettin' lunch.
  • 00:11:58.260 --> 00:12:00.080
  • And it was unpaid. It was not sexy at all.
  • 00:12:00.090 --> 00:12:03.090
  • But what I realized was that the same thing I learned in
  • 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:05.270
  • the church about service and about serving the community,
  • 00:12:05.280 --> 00:12:09.130
  • if I applied that to Hollywood, that would be a path to success.
  • 00:12:09.140 --> 00:12:13.030
  • So I just started serving people, that's it.
  • 00:12:13.040 --> 00:12:14.210
  • "What do you need? Oh, you need Starbucks?
  • 00:12:14.220 --> 00:12:16.010
  • I know what your order is."
  • 00:12:16.020 --> 00:12:17.110
  • So that was how I got my foot in the door.
  • 00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:20.030
  • And those years of working for Will and learning and
  • 00:12:20.040 --> 00:12:24.130
  • apprenticing, that really has laid the foundation
  • 00:12:24.140 --> 00:12:27.230
  • that I still stand upon now.
  • 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:29.140
  • After I had the 4 years of internship and the 2 years
  • 00:12:29.150 --> 00:12:32.090
  • as the assistant for his producing partner, I quit.
  • 00:12:32.100 --> 00:12:35.290
  • They had promised me a promotion with a year's time to become
  • 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:38.010
  • a junior executive.
  • 00:12:38.020 --> 00:12:39.130
  • Unfortunately, it didn't happen.
  • 00:12:39.140 --> 00:12:41.060
  • For months, I was depressed, angry, frustrated, mad,
  • 00:12:41.070 --> 00:12:45.060
  • didn't see where God was.
  • 00:12:45.070 --> 00:12:46.170
  • One day, I go into my cubicle, I turn on the computer,
  • 00:12:46.180 --> 00:12:49.170
  • and I say, "You know what?
  • 00:12:49.180 --> 00:12:50.270
  • I can't do this anymore."
  • 00:12:50.280 --> 00:12:52.070
  • And so I go to the bathroom, I go in the stall,
  • 00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:54.220
  • and me and God have it out.
  • 00:12:54.230 --> 00:12:56.060
  • I said, "Lord, you said anything I asked for
  • 00:12:56.070 --> 00:12:57.230
  • in the name of Jesus, you would do.
  • 00:12:57.240 --> 00:12:59.120
  • You said that if I knocked, that you would answer."
  • 00:12:59.130 --> 00:13:01.130
  • So I said, "Lord, right now, in the name of Jesus,
  • 00:13:01.140 --> 00:13:03.150
  • I'm standing on your Word.
  • 00:13:03.160 --> 00:13:04.280
  • Move on this job today if you are who you say you are."
  • 00:13:04.290 --> 00:13:08.230
  • Left the bathroom, went in, back to my cubicle.
  • 00:13:08.240 --> 00:13:11.230
  • Later on that night, my boss calls me into his office.
  • 00:13:11.240 --> 00:13:14.150
  • He says, "DeVon, Will and I, we love you.
  • 00:13:14.160 --> 00:13:16.240
  • We wish we could promote you, but we can't.
  • 00:13:16.250 --> 00:13:18.270
  • So we wanna help you find a new job."
  • 00:13:18.280 --> 00:13:20.220
  • So at one part of my mind, it was like,
  • 00:13:20.230 --> 00:13:22.150
  • "Wait, God heard me."
  • 00:13:22.160 --> 00:13:24.010
  • But on the other side, I'm like, "Wait,
  • 00:13:24.020 --> 00:13:25.130
  • they want to help me find a new job?
  • 00:13:25.140 --> 00:13:27.060
  • That's not a good thing.
  • 00:13:27.070 --> 00:13:28.230
  • So my job's not mine much longer."
  • 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:31.060
  • And this idea that here I was, mourning a job at the end
  • 00:13:31.070 --> 00:13:34.100
  • of one chapter, and I had to have enough faith to turn
  • 00:13:34.110 --> 00:13:36.290
  • to the next page for the new chapter.
  • 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:39.110
  • That was on a Friday night.
  • 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:40.210
  • On the following Monday, I went in and I quit,
  • 00:13:40.220 --> 00:13:43.000
  • put in my 2-week notice.
  • 00:13:43.010 --> 00:13:44.100
  • They said, "What are you doin'?"
  • 00:13:44.110 --> 00:13:45.200
  • You know, "You don't have a job?"
  • 00:13:45.210 --> 00:13:47.000
  • I said, "No."
  • 00:13:47.010 --> 00:13:48.100
  • They said, "Well, why are you leaving?"
  • 00:13:48.110 --> 00:13:49.200
  • I said, "'Cause I can't tell you faith works if I'm afraid
  • 00:13:49.210 --> 00:13:51.000
  • to try."
  • 00:13:51.010 --> 00:13:52.100
  • So, they said, "Okay, well, fill out the paperwork."
  • 00:13:52.110 --> 00:13:54.050
  • Two weeks came and went, I left, unemployed, no job.
  • 00:13:54.060 --> 00:13:59.040
  • People thought I was crazy, committed career suicide.
  • 00:13:59.050 --> 00:14:02.030
  • That was on a Friday that I left.
  • 00:14:02.040 --> 00:14:03.230
  • Monday, first day of unemployment,
  • 00:14:03.240 --> 00:14:05.190
  • by the end of the day, another production company had called me
  • 00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:08.090
  • and offered me the equivalent same executive position that
  • 00:14:08.100 --> 00:14:12.170
  • I was supposed to get with Will.
  • 00:14:12.180 --> 00:14:14.150
  • I took that job.
  • 00:14:14.160 --> 00:14:15.250
  • I was there for a year and a half.
  • 00:14:15.260 --> 00:14:17.050
  • I left that job to go to MGM.
  • 00:14:17.060 --> 00:14:18.270
  • Six months into being at MGM, they started sellin'
  • 00:14:18.280 --> 00:14:20.260
  • the company.
  • 00:14:20.270 --> 00:14:22.060
  • I was one of two executives that made the cut to go from MGM
  • 00:14:22.070 --> 00:14:25.170
  • to Sony.
  • 00:14:25.180 --> 00:14:27.100
  • Do you know who funds Will Smith's company?
  • 00:14:27.110 --> 00:14:29.120
  • Sony.
  • 00:14:29.130 --> 00:14:30.270
  • And so, when I got there, I became the former intern
  • 00:14:30.280 --> 00:14:33.200
  • and assistant that quit and committed career suicide to,
  • 00:14:33.210 --> 00:14:37.000
  • at that time, the executive that ended up working on the majority
  • 00:14:37.010 --> 00:14:40.230
  • of their projects.
  • 00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:42.130
  • Brian: All right, let me ask you a question.
  • 00:14:42.140 --> 00:14:43.240
  • African American man in Hollywood.
  • 00:14:43.250 --> 00:14:46.070
  • Has it made it easier? Has it made it harder?
  • 00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:49.020
  • Or has it been a non-issue?
  • 00:14:49.030 --> 00:14:51.010
  • DeVon: Oh, it's definitely been an issue.
  • 00:14:51.020 --> 00:14:53.050
  • It's both, because Hollywood, you know,
  • 00:14:53.060 --> 00:14:55.250
  • and especially in the power system,
  • 00:14:55.260 --> 00:14:57.130
  • in the executive ranks, you know,
  • 00:14:57.140 --> 00:14:58.250
  • there is an underrepresentation of people of color.
  • 00:14:58.260 --> 00:15:00.170
  • And when you're trying to program,
  • 00:15:00.180 --> 00:15:02.250
  • you know, movies for all audiences,
  • 00:15:02.260 --> 00:15:04.280
  • and you don't have that representation at the table,
  • 00:15:04.290 --> 00:15:07.000
  • it is a deficiency in most studios.
  • 00:15:07.010 --> 00:15:09.100
  • So me being of color was an asset.
  • 00:15:09.110 --> 00:15:11.270
  • Now, on the negative side, you know, being of color,
  • 00:15:11.280 --> 00:15:14.220
  • I mean, I have experienced tremendous amounts of racism.
  • 00:15:14.230 --> 00:15:18.050
  • I mean, there are times, you know, I've been in meetings,
  • 00:15:18.060 --> 00:15:20.010
  • and people would refer to me as, "The rapper."
  • 00:15:20.020 --> 00:15:22.040
  • There are certain people that they would only bring me,
  • 00:15:22.050 --> 00:15:25.060
  • you know, black projects, you know, or projects
  • 00:15:25.070 --> 00:15:28.100
  • featuring African Americans.
  • 00:15:28.110 --> 00:15:30.020
  • And I'm like, "Okay, that's fine,
  • 00:15:30.030 --> 00:15:31.270
  • but I have other interests too.
  • 00:15:31.280 --> 00:15:33.290
  • So what about, you know, treating me as an executive
  • 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:36.150
  • that can work on all kinds of movies, and not limiting me
  • 00:15:36.160 --> 00:15:40.010
  • just by the color of my skin?"
  • 00:15:40.020 --> 00:15:42.060
  • But the thing that has mattered the most is not allowing
  • 00:15:42.070 --> 00:15:46.070
  • my skin color and not allowing my ethnicity to make me
  • 00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:50.000
  • feel less than.
  • 00:15:50.010 --> 00:15:51.100
  • I recognize the challenge, but I'm not going to let that be
  • 00:15:51.110 --> 00:15:54.230
  • the final story.
  • 00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:56.030
  • Brian: What about America in general?
  • 00:15:56.040 --> 00:15:57.130
  • Like, I'm Australian, obviously, so I'm a foreigner.
  • 00:15:57.140 --> 00:15:59.280
  • But, you know, the last year or two,
  • 00:15:59.290 --> 00:16:02.160
  • clearly race has come way back onto the forefront
  • 00:16:02.170 --> 00:16:05.240
  • of people's minds in America.
  • 00:16:05.250 --> 00:16:07.240
  • So what's your take on that?
  • 00:16:07.250 --> 00:16:09.190
  • Will it end up being a good thing, do you think?
  • 00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:12.080
  • DeVon: You know, in terms of where we were as a country
  • 00:16:12.090 --> 00:16:15.070
  • as it related to issues of race,
  • 00:16:15.080 --> 00:16:16.230
  • it felt like there had been progress.
  • 00:16:16.240 --> 00:16:18.110
  • Certainly, you know, in recent time,
  • 00:16:18.120 --> 00:16:20.290
  • the feeling is that that progress,
  • 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:23.130
  • maybe it was not as far as we thought.
  • 00:16:23.140 --> 00:16:25.140
  • God gives us the freedom of choice,
  • 00:16:25.150 --> 00:16:27.240
  • and he also gives us the opportunity to live according
  • 00:16:27.250 --> 00:16:30.170
  • to our calling.
  • 00:16:30.180 --> 00:16:31.270
  • We need to live in a country that allows us to do
  • 00:16:31.280 --> 00:16:33.110
  • the same thing, and that comes through acceptance,
  • 00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:36.050
  • that comes through love, and that comes through
  • 00:16:36.060 --> 00:16:37.200
  • partnership and fighting for our rights collectively.
  • 00:16:37.210 --> 00:16:41.190
  • So, my hope is that, as much negativity as there is right now
  • 00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:44.270
  • in America, specifically related to this issue of race,
  • 00:16:44.280 --> 00:16:48.250
  • my hope is that this will birth a new movement that can help
  • 00:16:48.260 --> 00:16:51.210
  • produce healing.
  • 00:16:51.220 --> 00:16:53.010
  • And my hope and prayer is that it starts with the church.
  • 00:16:53.020 --> 00:16:56.280
  • Brian: I was looking to ask you that very thing.
  • 00:16:56.290 --> 00:16:58.080
  • DeVon: [laughing] I mean, your mind,
  • 00:16:58.090 --> 00:16:59.280
  • I got it, you know?
  • 00:16:59.290 --> 00:17:01.100
  • It's like I'm tired of the same racial issues that we have
  • 00:17:01.110 --> 00:17:04.250
  • in America being reflected in the church.
  • 00:17:04.260 --> 00:17:07.150
  • And I think that it's time that, as a church,
  • 00:17:07.160 --> 00:17:10.090
  • we do what God says, one church, one faith,
  • 00:17:10.100 --> 00:17:14.080
  • one baptism, one body, and not allow the political system
  • 00:17:14.090 --> 00:17:18.290
  • to divide us as a body of believers.
  • 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:22.190
  • And that's what I see happening, and I think that's the thing
  • 00:17:22.200 --> 00:17:25.000
  • that I personally want to help work against.
  • 00:17:25.010 --> 00:17:28.070
  • Because the church still has tremendous influence,
  • 00:17:28.080 --> 00:17:30.200
  • you know, in America, and can be very helpful to end racism.
  • 00:17:30.210 --> 00:17:35.120
  • And too often, we allow the politics to back us into
  • 00:17:35.130 --> 00:17:39.120
  • a corner when, at the end of the day,
  • 00:17:39.130 --> 00:17:41.180
  • when Jesus returns and we stand before God,
  • 00:17:41.190 --> 00:17:44.160
  • is he gonna say, "Were you Democrat or Republican?"
  • 00:17:44.170 --> 00:17:47.290
  • No, he's gonna say, "What did you do to the least of these?"
  • 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:51.150
  • And if we say, "Well, you know, we voted for this,
  • 00:17:51.160 --> 00:17:54.140
  • or we voted for that," he's gonna say,
  • 00:17:54.150 --> 00:17:55.250
  • "No, no, what you did to the least of these,
  • 00:17:55.260 --> 00:17:57.270
  • you did unto me."
  • 00:17:57.280 --> 00:17:59.130
  • And that, to me, is a thing I want us as believers
  • 00:17:59.140 --> 00:18:02.220
  • to remember.
  • 00:18:02.230 --> 00:18:04.030
  • That's what matters.
  • 00:18:04.040 --> 00:18:05.190
  • Brian: Coming up after the break:
  • 00:18:06.060 --> 00:18:08.080
  • DeVon: What are we trying to draw people to,
  • 00:18:08.090 --> 00:18:10.090
  • and who are we drawing them to?
  • 00:18:10.100 --> 00:18:11.260
  • He was always the one that reached across the aisle.
  • 00:18:11.270 --> 00:18:15.010
  • He was always the one that operated in love and acceptance,
  • 00:18:15.020 --> 00:18:18.250
  • never judgment, never condemnation.
  • 00:18:18.260 --> 00:18:21.260
  • Brian: As an outsider again, like,
  • 00:18:32.290 --> 00:18:34.240
  • it's just intriguing for me to see where does this go?
  • 00:18:34.250 --> 00:18:38.060
  • You know, where does healing come from?
  • 00:18:38.070 --> 00:18:40.060
  • Because you're right.
  • 00:18:40.070 --> 00:18:41.160
  • Like, politically, but then in areas far beyond politics,
  • 00:18:41.170 --> 00:18:44.130
  • it's like the middle's almost disappeared.
  • 00:18:44.140 --> 00:18:46.230
  • It's like you're either here or you're here,
  • 00:18:46.240 --> 00:18:48.190
  • and we don't like each other, you know, so.
  • 00:18:48.200 --> 00:18:50.290
  • DeVon: You know, when you look at the life of Christ,
  • 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:52.140
  • what did he do?
  • 00:18:52.150 --> 00:18:53.240
  • You know, he sat with people that he may not have agreed
  • 00:18:53.250 --> 00:18:55.280
  • with, but that wasn't important.
  • 00:18:55.290 --> 00:18:57.120
  • What he wanted to do was make a connection,
  • 00:18:57.130 --> 00:18:59.070
  • to let you know, "It's not important I don't agree
  • 00:18:59.080 --> 00:19:00.270
  • with you.
  • 00:19:00.280 --> 00:19:02.070
  • I want you to know I still love you.
  • 00:19:02.080 --> 00:19:03.170
  • I want you to know it's still important for us to have
  • 00:19:03.180 --> 00:19:04.270
  • common ground, for us to be able to talk together,
  • 00:19:04.280 --> 00:19:07.060
  • for us to be able to commune together,
  • 00:19:07.070 --> 00:19:09.040
  • to be civil to one another."
  • 00:19:09.050 --> 00:19:11.120
  • And without that, how else would people ever want to know
  • 00:19:11.130 --> 00:19:14.220
  • more about who he was?
  • 00:19:14.230 --> 00:19:16.180
  • And to me, that's the thing that I,
  • 00:19:16.190 --> 00:19:18.110
  • you know, get excited about and also get worried about,
  • 00:19:18.120 --> 00:19:20.280
  • is that, what are we trying to draw people to,
  • 00:19:20.290 --> 00:19:23.200
  • and who are we drawing them to?
  • 00:19:23.210 --> 00:19:25.210
  • And as believers, you know, if we say we follow Christ,
  • 00:19:25.220 --> 00:19:28.190
  • what does that mean?
  • 00:19:28.200 --> 00:19:30.130
  • That means we have to look at the Man that we follow and say,
  • 00:19:30.140 --> 00:19:33.180
  • "Okay, well, what did he do, and how should that inform
  • 00:19:33.190 --> 00:19:36.090
  • what we do?"
  • 00:19:36.100 --> 00:19:37.210
  • And he was always the one that reached across the aisle.
  • 00:19:37.220 --> 00:19:40.290
  • He was always the one that operated in love and acceptance,
  • 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:45.100
  • never judgment, never condemnation.
  • 00:19:45.110 --> 00:19:47.180
  • The very people he condemned were the people that were,
  • 00:19:47.190 --> 00:19:49.020
  • you know, basically perpetuating the system.
  • 00:19:49.030 --> 00:19:52.180
  • You know, he did not condemn the people he was trying to reach.
  • 00:19:52.190 --> 00:19:55.170
  • So I really want us, as a body of believers,
  • 00:19:55.180 --> 00:19:58.110
  • to really get back to that and to begin to say,
  • 00:19:58.120 --> 00:20:01.040
  • "You know what?
  • 00:20:01.050 --> 00:20:02.140
  • We got too caught up in this political thing.
  • 00:20:02.150 --> 00:20:04.120
  • Doesn't matter, let's start reaching out.
  • 00:20:04.130 --> 00:20:06.290
  • Let's start pushing forward, you know,
  • 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:08.260
  • policy that will align with our values,
  • 00:20:08.270 --> 00:20:12.290
  • which is helping the poor, helping those that cannot
  • 00:20:13.000 --> 00:20:15.240
  • help themselves."
  • 00:20:15.250 --> 00:20:17.140
  • To me, that is going to be the issue that God is
  • 00:20:17.150 --> 00:20:22.000
  • gonna hold us accountable for.
  • 00:20:22.010 --> 00:20:23.250
  • Brian: All right, so, you're a good-looking dude.
  • 00:20:23.260 --> 00:20:26.230
  • DeVon: Oh, thank you.
  • 00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:28.180
  • Brian: In Hollywood, everything's there,
  • 00:20:28.190 --> 00:20:31.110
  • everything's available to you.
  • 00:20:31.120 --> 00:20:34.210
  • And you somehow walk a line as a Christian,
  • 00:20:34.220 --> 00:20:36.290
  • not only as a Christian, but keeping standards that people
  • 00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:40.070
  • think in Hollywood don't even exist.
  • 00:20:40.080 --> 00:20:42.150
  • How did you do that?
  • 00:20:42.160 --> 00:20:44.230
  • DeVon: You know, it's a good question.
  • 00:20:44.240 --> 00:20:47.070
  • You can only be tempted by what you want.
  • 00:20:47.080 --> 00:20:50.090
  • So, this may sound weird, I don't believe that the
  • 00:20:50.100 --> 00:20:54.140
  • temptations in Hollywood are any greater than temptations
  • 00:20:54.150 --> 00:20:58.030
  • in any career.
  • 00:20:58.040 --> 00:20:59.240
  • So, for me, the road to becoming successful in Hollywood
  • 00:20:59.250 --> 00:21:03.120
  • is certainly filled with temptation,
  • 00:21:03.130 --> 00:21:04.230
  • but not because it's Hollywood.
  • 00:21:04.240 --> 00:21:06.180
  • It's because that's my desire.
  • 00:21:06.190 --> 00:21:08.100
  • So, based upon my desire, the enemy is a master manipulator
  • 00:21:08.110 --> 00:21:12.260
  • of desire and intent.
  • 00:21:12.270 --> 00:21:14.210
  • So, for me, what I had to do--and a lot of this came
  • 00:21:14.220 --> 00:21:17.050
  • from not only just reading the Word but also,
  • 00:21:17.060 --> 00:21:19.050
  • you know, spending time with guys like Will and understanding
  • 00:21:19.060 --> 00:21:21.160
  • what really works in the business.
  • 00:21:21.170 --> 00:21:23.060
  • Was like, "Okay, what is my intention?
  • 00:21:23.070 --> 00:21:26.060
  • What is my focus? And what is my goal?"
  • 00:21:26.070 --> 00:21:28.230
  • So if my goal ultimately is to be successful in Hollywood,
  • 00:21:28.240 --> 00:21:31.190
  • what'd success look like?
  • 00:21:31.200 --> 00:21:32.290
  • For me, success looked like having my own company.
  • 00:21:33.000 --> 00:21:35.140
  • So, okay, so if that's my goal, the way that I've been able to,
  • 00:21:35.150 --> 00:21:39.060
  • you know, walk the line, so to speak,
  • 00:21:39.070 --> 00:21:41.270
  • is to keep focused on that, but understand,
  • 00:21:41.280 --> 00:21:44.150
  • the only way I'm gonna get it is through honoring him.
  • 00:21:44.160 --> 00:21:49.120
  • And honoring him is not just a spiritual construct.
  • 00:21:49.130 --> 00:21:53.000
  • It's a practical one. How do I honor him?
  • 00:21:53.010 --> 00:21:55.060
  • "Study to show yourself approved."
  • 00:21:55.070 --> 00:21:56.170
  • So many times, we use that as just a biblical reference.
  • 00:21:56.180 --> 00:21:59.160
  • It's also talkin' about the systems that we're in.
  • 00:21:59.170 --> 00:22:01.250
  • Look at Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
  • 00:22:01.260 --> 00:22:03.260
  • They had to study Babylon.
  • 00:22:03.270 --> 00:22:05.170
  • They had to study how it worked so that they could use
  • 00:22:05.180 --> 00:22:07.220
  • that system for God's glory.
  • 00:22:07.230 --> 00:22:10.120
  • And I do believe that it's not just about me.
  • 00:22:10.130 --> 00:22:13.190
  • It's not about DeVon.
  • 00:22:13.200 --> 00:22:15.020
  • It's about, you know, what is God trying to do through
  • 00:22:15.030 --> 00:22:17.280
  • the opportunities he's brought me?
  • 00:22:17.290 --> 00:22:20.060
  • And understanding that sense of collective responsibility
  • 00:22:20.070 --> 00:22:23.150
  • has also helped.
  • 00:22:23.160 --> 00:22:25.020
  • Because when you step out there, or I step out there and say,
  • 00:22:25.030 --> 00:22:28.250
  • "I'm a Christian, I have faith," even people who may not share
  • 00:22:28.260 --> 00:22:32.180
  • that have an expectation of what that's gonna look like.
  • 00:22:32.190 --> 00:22:35.160
  • Not only do I have to live what I'm saying,
  • 00:22:35.170 --> 00:22:38.010
  • I also have to recognize that I may be the only representation
  • 00:22:38.020 --> 00:22:41.130
  • of Christ to somebody, and that responsibility is what has
  • 00:22:41.140 --> 00:22:45.240
  • also kept me focused on walking that line.
  • 00:22:45.250 --> 00:22:50.030
  • Brian: We're gonna run out of time,
  • 00:22:50.040 --> 00:22:51.130
  • so I've gotta ask you about your wife.
  • 00:22:51.140 --> 00:22:54.070
  • We haven't talked about your wife yet, so.
  • 00:22:54.080 --> 00:22:56.140
  • DeVon: Yes, you know, my wife,
  • 00:22:56.150 --> 00:22:57.240
  • Meagan, she's amazing, and we've been married
  • 00:22:57.250 --> 00:23:01.110
  • almost for 5 years now.
  • 00:23:01.120 --> 00:23:03.160
  • We met years ago when I was an executive for Sony.
  • 00:23:03.170 --> 00:23:07.150
  • And then when I was there, I also did a film called
  • 00:23:07.160 --> 00:23:09.240
  • "Jumping the Broom" that she was one of the stars of.
  • 00:23:09.250 --> 00:23:12.060
  • And on that film, we got, you know, our friendship
  • 00:23:12.070 --> 00:23:14.130
  • really got started, and we ended up
  • 00:23:14.140 --> 00:23:16.090
  • getting married about a year,
  • 00:23:16.100 --> 00:23:18.230
  • about 2 years since the movie had wrapped.
  • 00:23:18.240 --> 00:23:21.010
  • And we wrote a book last year called,
  • 00:23:21.020 --> 00:23:22.220
  • "The Wait," and it's all about how you find the love
  • 00:23:22.230 --> 00:23:25.000
  • of your life and the life you love based upon celibacy.
  • 00:23:25.010 --> 00:23:28.150
  • And her and I, you know, were celibate until marriage.
  • 00:23:28.160 --> 00:23:30.240
  • And we wrote a book to kinda help people understand
  • 00:23:30.250 --> 00:23:32.280
  • why it's important to wait, what happens when you wait,
  • 00:23:32.290 --> 00:23:35.200
  • and how the benefit is not just in your personal life,
  • 00:23:35.210 --> 00:23:38.180
  • but it permeates every other area of your life.
  • 00:23:38.190 --> 00:23:41.150
  • Because God honors a sacrifice.
  • 00:23:41.160 --> 00:23:43.030
  • And what greater sacrifice when you decide,
  • 00:23:43.040 --> 00:23:45.190
  • "We were not going to cross that line until we are married"?
  • 00:23:45.200 --> 00:23:50.240
  • And it's been great.
  • 00:23:50.250 --> 00:23:52.070
  • I mean, you know, to be able to--for her to have her career
  • 00:23:52.080 --> 00:23:54.140
  • as an actress and, you know, my career as a producer,
  • 00:23:54.150 --> 00:23:57.130
  • and all the other things that I do,
  • 00:23:57.140 --> 00:23:59.190
  • and to come together and write this book has been awesome.
  • 00:23:59.200 --> 00:24:02.100
  • And people all around the world have been finding the message
  • 00:24:02.110 --> 00:24:05.080
  • and it's been changing lives, and so,
  • 00:24:05.090 --> 00:24:07.040
  • that's great, to be able to walk this thing out with her.
  • 00:24:07.050 --> 00:24:10.040
  • Brian: Yeah, well, it's a tremendous testimony,
  • 00:24:10.050 --> 00:24:12.190
  • that's for sure.
  • 00:24:12.200 --> 00:24:13.290
  • It's a great story, and hopefully,
  • 00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:15.090
  • it'll help a lot of young people.
  • 00:24:15.100 --> 00:24:16.250
  • DeVon: I hope so.
  • 00:24:16.260 --> 00:24:18.050
  • Brian: Yeah, so, what do you think of heaven?
  • 00:24:18.060 --> 00:24:19.150
  • DeVon: Oh, my goodness.
  • 00:24:19.160 --> 00:24:20.250
  • What do I think? I can't wait to get there.
  • 00:24:20.260 --> 00:24:22.050
  • And most of my films have been about heaven.
  • 00:24:22.060 --> 00:24:23.150
  • Brian: Exactly.
  • 00:24:23.160 --> 00:24:25.190
  • Devon: And I love stories that can give us a glimpse
  • 00:24:25.200 --> 00:24:30.230
  • into what is and what is to come.
  • 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:33.240
  • And I think that if we can get the reality of heaven
  • 00:24:33.250 --> 00:24:38.270
  • into our life now, we're gonna live better.
  • 00:24:38.280 --> 00:24:42.080
  • We're gonna live with less stress.
  • 00:24:42.090 --> 00:24:43.290
  • We're gonna live with more optimism.
  • 00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:45.090
  • We're gonna live with more peace.
  • 00:24:45.100 --> 00:24:46.210
  • Because we understand that all that we see
  • 00:24:46.220 --> 00:24:48.010
  • is not all that there is.
  • 00:24:48.020 --> 00:24:50.130
  • And this doesn't even do heaven justice.
  • 00:24:50.140 --> 00:24:53.230
  • It's nothin' compared to what we're gonna see in heaven,
  • 00:24:53.240 --> 00:24:56.180
  • yeah.
  • 00:24:56.190 --> 00:24:57.290
  • Brian: All right, so, DeVon, your time on earth is coming
  • 00:24:58.000 --> 00:25:01.080
  • to an end.
  • 00:25:01.090 --> 00:25:02.180
  • Not soon, by the way, but your time on earth
  • 00:25:02.190 --> 00:25:04.200
  • is coming to an end.
  • 00:25:04.210 --> 00:25:06.040
  • And obviously, one day, you'll be in heaven and there'll be
  • 00:25:06.050 --> 00:25:11.100
  • something written on a tombstone somewhere.
  • 00:25:11.110 --> 00:25:13.130
  • What would you like it to say?
  • 00:25:13.140 --> 00:25:15.050
  • DeVon: You know, at the end of the day,
  • 00:25:15.060 --> 00:25:17.250
  • God is real, Jesus saves, and faith works.
  • 00:25:17.260 --> 00:25:22.050
  • Brian: Well, that all fits on there.
  • 00:25:22.060 --> 00:25:23.210
  • DeVon: It all fits on there.
  • 00:25:23.220 --> 00:25:25.110
  • And if I have lived a life that has embodied those three things,
  • 00:25:25.120 --> 00:25:31.180
  • "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
  • 00:25:31.190 --> 00:25:33.130
  • Brian: That's amazing, well, look,
  • 00:25:33.140 --> 00:25:34.230
  • I could talk to you forever because--
  • 00:25:34.240 --> 00:25:36.130
  • DeVon: Likewise.
  • 00:25:36.140 --> 00:25:37.230
  • Brian: You're interesting, and you're exciting,
  • 00:25:37.240 --> 00:25:39.030
  • and you love to talk, so you're not hard to interview.
  • 00:25:39.040 --> 00:25:41.120
  • But hey, I wish you all the best for the days to come,
  • 00:25:41.130 --> 00:25:43.240
  • and I know God's got great things ahead for you as well.
  • 00:25:43.250 --> 00:25:46.180
  • So be blessed, and thanks for coming on.
  • 00:25:46.190 --> 00:25:48.190
  • DeVon: Thanks for having me, honor and a pleasure.
  • 00:25:48.200 --> 00:25:50.200
