  • - Bobby Schuller: Stand with me,
  • 00:00:05.150 --> 00:00:06.240
  • we're going to say our confession together.
  • 00:00:06.250 --> 00:00:09.050
  • Hold your hands out like this as a sign of receiving.
  • 00:00:09.060 --> 00:00:11.270
  • We're going to say it together.
  • 00:00:11.280 --> 00:00:13.290
  • "I am not what I do.
  • 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:15.240
  • I am not what I have.
  • 00:00:15.250 --> 00:00:17.230
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:00:17.240 --> 00:00:20.150
  • I am the beloved of God.
  • 00:00:20.160 --> 00:00:23.010
  • It's who I am.
  • 00:00:23.020 --> 00:00:24.200
  • No one can take it from me.
  • 00:00:24.210 --> 00:00:27.020
  • I don't have to worry, I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:00:27.030 --> 00:00:30.260
  • I can trust my friend Jesus, and share his love with the world."
  • 00:00:30.270 --> 00:00:35.260
  • Thanks, you can be seated.
  • 00:00:35.270 --> 00:00:38.040
  • Today, I'm actually in part going to preach the first sermon
  • 00:00:38.050 --> 00:00:42.200
  • I ever preached when I was 17 years old.
  • 00:00:42.210 --> 00:00:45.120
  • And I used to preach this in little gatherings of my high
  • 00:00:45.130 --> 00:00:48.180
  • school, and later in college, when I was a business major and
  • 00:00:48.190 --> 00:00:52.000
  • had no plan of being a pastor.
  • 00:00:52.010 --> 00:00:53.160
  • This was the sermon I always gave.
  • 00:00:53.170 --> 00:00:55.160
  • And back then, it was called "Saved by Grace Through Faith."
  • 00:00:55.170 --> 00:00:58.100
  • But today, I'm only probably going to get through half of it.
  • 00:00:58.110 --> 00:01:01.120
  • I got through a third of it in the first service, so.
  • 00:01:01.130 --> 00:01:04.020
  • So, I just want to begin with this.
  • 00:01:04.030 --> 00:01:07.200
  • I want to begin by affirming what you already know,
  • 00:01:07.210 --> 00:01:12.040
  • and that is that God is for you.
  • 00:01:12.050 --> 00:01:16.130
  • God is for you.
  • 00:01:16.140 --> 00:01:17.280
  • God is on your side all the way.
  • 00:01:17.290 --> 00:01:22.150
  • You just need to know that, but we're talking right now in a
  • 00:01:22.160 --> 00:01:25.100
  • series of faith called "A Simple Guide to Walking on Water."
  • 00:01:25.110 --> 00:01:29.050
  • And that is what I believe Christians are really called to
  • 00:01:29.060 --> 00:01:32.100
  • do, walking on water type stuff.
  • 00:01:32.110 --> 00:01:35.010
  • I believe that we are meant to be world changers.
  • 00:01:35.020 --> 00:01:40.130
  • I believe the church is the hope for the world.
  • 00:01:40.140 --> 00:01:43.080
  • I believe that most positive change,
  • 00:01:43.090 --> 00:01:45.230
  • like Dr. King, came from the church,
  • 00:01:45.240 --> 00:01:48.090
  • and I believe it will continue to come from the church.
  • 00:01:48.100 --> 00:01:51.100
  • I believe what St. Augustine said,
  • 00:01:51.110 --> 00:01:53.070
  • "There is no saint without a past,
  • 00:01:53.080 --> 00:01:55.020
  • no sinner without a future."
  • 00:01:55.030 --> 00:01:57.070
  • I believe in a God who never, ever gives up on you,
  • 00:01:57.080 --> 00:02:00.220
  • who is 100% on your side, and who has a great life in store
  • 00:02:00.230 --> 00:02:05.140
  • for you.
  • 00:02:05.150 --> 00:02:06.240
  • I believe in this God with all my heart.
  • 00:02:06.250 --> 00:02:09.170
  • You know God is your dad, right, God is your dad?
  • 00:02:09.180 --> 00:02:14.000
  • If you were to ask a parent what they want for their kids,
  • 00:02:14.010 --> 00:02:17.030
  • and let's say you gave them X, Y,
  • 00:02:17.040 --> 00:02:20.010
  • and Z; A, B, and C.
  • 00:02:20.020 --> 00:02:21.240
  • A, your kids can either be successful.
  • 00:02:21.250 --> 00:02:24.160
  • B, they can be very attractive.
  • 00:02:24.170 --> 00:02:28.280
  • Or C, they can be happy.
  • 00:02:28.290 --> 00:02:30.150
  • What would you pick?
  • 00:02:30.160 --> 00:02:32.010
  • Almost every parent would pick happy.
  • 00:02:32.020 --> 00:02:34.190
  • God, who is the epitome of joy and love,
  • 00:02:34.200 --> 00:02:38.110
  • what do you think he would pick for you?
  • 00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:39.210
  • You know, like I wish happy, but he picked attractive,
  • 00:02:39.220 --> 00:02:43.140
  • unfortunately, right?
  • 00:02:43.150 --> 00:02:45.240
  • Unfortunately.
  • 00:02:45.250 --> 00:02:47.280
  • No.
  • 00:02:47.290 --> 00:02:49.090
  • So, you know, I mean, if you were to ask a parent that has a
  • 00:02:49.100 --> 00:02:55.140
  • wayward child, just a--you know, just a rebel of a child,
  • 00:02:55.150 --> 00:02:58.280
  • who's always messing up, what would you want for your wayward,
  • 00:02:58.290 --> 00:03:03.050
  • prodigal child?
  • 00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:04.160
  • Would you want them to be healthy,
  • 00:03:04.170 --> 00:03:05.290
  • or would you want them to be sick?
  • 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:07.090
  • A hundred percent of the time, right?
  • 00:03:07.100 --> 00:03:11.040
  • What evil person would pick for their child to be sick?
  • 00:03:11.050 --> 00:03:16.000
  • God is not making you sick.
  • 00:03:16.010 --> 00:03:18.280
  • God wants you to be happy.
  • 00:03:18.290 --> 00:03:21.050
  • God wants you to have a joy-filled life.
  • 00:03:21.060 --> 00:03:23.270
  • And heaven is amazing, and you'll see when you get there.
  • 00:03:23.280 --> 00:03:28.000
  • But God is not limited to just heaven.
  • 00:03:28.010 --> 00:03:31.080
  • God says--in fact, Jesus teaches us to pray,
  • 00:03:31.090 --> 00:03:34.160
  • "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth
  • 00:03:34.170 --> 00:03:38.140
  • as it is in heaven."
  • 00:03:38.150 --> 00:03:39.240
  • There's no sick people in heaven.
  • 00:03:39.250 --> 00:03:43.050
  • There's no heartbroken people in heaven.
  • 00:03:43.060 --> 00:03:45.150
  • There's no guilty people in heaven, right?
  • 00:03:45.160 --> 00:03:49.160
  • And there's no sin in heaven.
  • 00:03:49.170 --> 00:03:51.140
  • And so, God is at work to undo these things in our life,
  • 00:03:51.150 --> 00:03:55.100
  • through the life and body of Jesus Christ and through the
  • 00:03:55.110 --> 00:03:57.230
  • church, and he's doing it even now.
  • 00:03:57.240 --> 00:03:59.150
  • So, you must learn today that God will be faithful
  • 00:03:59.160 --> 00:04:02.020
  • to his covenant.
  • 00:04:02.030 --> 00:04:03.120
  • He's faithful to you even in spite of our faithlessness and
  • 00:04:03.130 --> 00:04:06.090
  • all the things that make us human.
  • 00:04:06.100 --> 00:04:07.250
  • God's on your side, you have to believe that.
  • 00:04:07.260 --> 00:04:11.020
  • And faith begins and ends right there.
  • 00:04:11.030 --> 00:04:13.040
  • If you lose that, if you lose that, you lose everything.
  • 00:04:13.050 --> 00:04:16.000
  • That's why we affirm that every single week that God loves us in
  • 00:04:16.010 --> 00:04:19.010
  • spite of what we do, and have, and et cetera.
  • 00:04:19.020 --> 00:04:22.040
  • Jesus is the total fulfillment of the law
  • 00:04:22.050 --> 00:04:26.130
  • and the Scriptures in every way.
  • 00:04:26.140 --> 00:04:27.270
  • If your interpretation of Scripture is different than the
  • 00:04:27.280 --> 00:04:31.030
  • behavior of Jesus Christ, you're reading the Bible wrong.
  • 00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:34.220
  • Jesus 100% shows us what the intent of God is in his Word and
  • 00:04:34.230 --> 00:04:39.060
  • in his covenant.
  • 00:04:39.070 --> 00:04:40.250
  • Does Jesus ever make anyone sick?
  • 00:04:40.260 --> 00:04:46.230
  • Right, I've said this a lot, but this--Jesus has lots of people
  • 00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:50.070
  • he's angry with that he confronts,
  • 00:04:50.080 --> 00:04:52.180
  • but does he ever go up to a Pharisee and say,
  • 00:04:52.190 --> 00:04:55.080
  • "All right, in 3 weeks, I will come back,
  • 00:04:55.090 --> 00:04:58.140
  • and I will heal you if your behavior's better," right?
  • 00:04:58.150 --> 00:05:01.100
  • Or in all seriousness, right?
  • 00:05:01.110 --> 00:05:03.060
  • I mean, Jesus does not go around making people sick.
  • 00:05:03.070 --> 00:05:07.010
  • He doesn't go around harming and hurting people.
  • 00:05:07.020 --> 00:05:09.250
  • Jesus just goes around healing everyone with reckless abandon,
  • 00:05:09.260 --> 00:05:14.130
  • like not even thinking about it, just,
  • 00:05:14.140 --> 00:05:16.270
  • "And you're healed, and you're healed," just everywhere he
  • 00:05:16.280 --> 00:05:21.060
  • goes, just an overflow of his very person,
  • 00:05:21.070 --> 00:05:24.240
  • healing, encouraging, lifting up anyone he can.
  • 00:05:24.250 --> 00:05:29.090
  • Live in God's love just as you are,
  • 00:05:29.100 --> 00:05:32.090
  • and he'll take care of the rest.
  • 00:05:32.100 --> 00:05:34.090
  • That's the gospel of grace, that the goodness
  • 00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:38.030
  • is what God does in us.
  • 00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:39.130
  • It's not what we do from trying harder and learning all the
  • 00:05:39.140 --> 00:05:41.040
  • rules.
  • 00:05:41.050 --> 00:05:42.150
  • So, learning is important, knowledge is important,
  • 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:44.260
  • Scripture's important, but in the end,
  • 00:05:44.270 --> 00:05:46.060
  • it's God doing the transformative work
  • 00:05:46.070 --> 00:05:47.260
  • in our hearts.
  • 00:05:47.270 --> 00:05:49.060
  • It's the upside-down kingdom.
  • 00:05:49.070 --> 00:05:50.180
  • It's not, you know, I do really well,
  • 00:05:50.190 --> 00:05:53.260
  • and for good behavior, I get more of God's love and blessing.
  • 00:05:53.270 --> 00:05:56.070
  • No, it's the other way around.
  • 00:05:56.080 --> 00:05:57.270
  • In fact, Jesus unfairly blesses people who don't deserve to be
  • 00:05:57.280 --> 00:06:01.220
  • blessed.
  • 00:06:01.230 --> 00:06:03.130
  • And all of the people who are righteous and holy,
  • 00:06:03.140 --> 00:06:05.170
  • all the religious leaders are like,
  • 00:06:05.180 --> 00:06:06.280
  • "Come on, what the heck?"
  • 00:06:06.290 --> 00:06:10.190
  • Jesus is totally unfair in a good way.
  • 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:14.130
  • He's on your side.
  • 00:06:14.140 --> 00:06:15.250
  • He is for you.
  • 00:06:15.260 --> 00:06:17.170
  • Don't give up.
  • 00:06:17.180 --> 00:06:19.090
  • We live in a broken, fallen world that is at war in the
  • 00:06:19.100 --> 00:06:22.190
  • spiritual realms.
  • 00:06:22.200 --> 00:06:24.210
  • But the faith that we have in Jesus Christ is this.
  • 00:06:24.220 --> 00:06:27.220
  • In the end, it will make sense, and we will see that the good
  • 00:06:27.230 --> 00:06:32.090
  • outweighed the bad.
  • 00:06:32.100 --> 00:06:33.250
  • And we'll believe it, and it'll far outweigh it.
  • 00:06:33.260 --> 00:06:36.110
  • Because God is not--God is not a God of balancing scales.
  • 00:06:36.120 --> 00:06:40.120
  • He is a God of making that scale tip all the way because you're
  • 00:06:40.130 --> 00:06:44.110
  • his favorite.
  • 00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:46.120
  • And that's what the Scriptures say.
  • 00:06:47.260 --> 00:06:50.020
  • You're his favorite.
  • 00:06:50.030 --> 00:06:51.220
  • He's going to look over a lot of the mistakes and stuff that
  • 00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:53.260
  • you're making so that he can bless you.
  • 00:06:53.270 --> 00:06:55.280
  • So, let go of your shame, let go of your guilt,
  • 00:06:55.290 --> 00:06:59.090
  • let go of your worrying, and just be who you are today.
  • 00:06:59.100 --> 00:07:03.100
  • And trust that God loves you enough to make the changes.
  • 00:07:03.110 --> 00:07:05.270
  • God loves you just as you are, but loves you too much to leave
  • 00:07:05.280 --> 00:07:09.020
  • you the way you are.
  • 00:07:09.030 --> 00:07:10.180
  • So, I should probably start my sermon now.
  • 00:07:10.190 --> 00:07:12.190
  • I will do my best.
  • 00:07:15.070 --> 00:07:17.070
  • Okay.
  • 00:07:18.090 --> 00:07:20.090
  • I promise you I won't let you out late,
  • 00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:22.260
  • I never do.
  • 00:07:22.270 --> 00:07:24.270
  • So, Luke chapter 13.
  • 00:07:26.010 --> 00:07:30.130
  • Luke 13.
  • 00:07:30.140 --> 00:07:31.270
  • So, in this story, well, Hannah--or Bryan Hobbolt
  • 00:07:31.280 --> 00:07:35.090
  • already read it.
  • 00:07:35.100 --> 00:07:36.190
  • [speaking in foreign language].
  • 00:07:36.200 --> 00:07:40.040
  • Not yet, someday.
  • 00:07:40.050 --> 00:07:42.130
  • Already, you're already a pastor,
  • 00:07:42.140 --> 00:07:43.240
  • all right.
  • 00:07:43.250 --> 00:07:45.220
  • We were just speaking Dutch, you know,
  • 00:07:45.230 --> 00:07:47.030
  • no big deal.
  • 00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:49.040
  • Luke chapter 13.
  • 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:51.110
  • He read the story, and I want you in your imagination to
  • 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:54.240
  • follow me in this story, okay?
  • 00:07:54.250 --> 00:07:56.050
  • It's 2.000 years ago.
  • 00:07:56.060 --> 00:07:57.150
  • The world is ruled by the Roman Empire.
  • 00:07:57.160 --> 00:08:02.000
  • And picture Israel, you know, a lot like California,
  • 00:08:02.010 --> 00:08:04.090
  • actually.
  • 00:08:04.100 --> 00:08:05.190
  • Very sunny, a little warmer, but the ground is dusty, eh?
  • 00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:09.250
  • The floor is dirt floors.
  • 00:08:09.260 --> 00:08:12.160
  • And you're in a synagogue, it's an adobe synagogue maybe,
  • 00:08:12.170 --> 00:08:17.050
  • maybe made from stone or something like that,
  • 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:19.060
  • probably pretty.
  • 00:08:19.070 --> 00:08:20.270
  • And it's the most impressive building in town.
  • 00:08:20.280 --> 00:08:23.050
  • And you're in a village.
  • 00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:24.150
  • And in this village, everybody knows each other,
  • 00:08:24.160 --> 00:08:26.280
  • and everybody grew up with each other because,
  • 00:08:26.290 --> 00:08:28.150
  • in those days, the average person didn't--never left 14
  • 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:31.200
  • miles from the place of which they were born ever in their
  • 00:08:31.210 --> 00:08:34.040
  • life, that's the furthest they'd go is about 14 miles.
  • 00:08:34.050 --> 00:08:36.080
  • So, everybody knows everybody.
  • 00:08:36.090 --> 00:08:39.140
  • And it's a very religious community,
  • 00:08:39.150 --> 00:08:41.060
  • but it's also a very educated community.
  • 00:08:41.070 --> 00:08:43.040
  • These are people that know Greek,
  • 00:08:43.050 --> 00:08:45.020
  • and philosophy, and arithmetic.
  • 00:08:45.030 --> 00:08:46.290
  • Most of the people in this building speak four languages:
  • 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:51.010
  • Greek, Latin, Aramaic, and Hebrew.
  • 00:08:51.020 --> 00:08:55.220
  • And here they are, they're sitting.
  • 00:08:55.230 --> 00:08:59.050
  • And the highest person in the village or in town is the rabbi.
  • 00:08:59.060 --> 00:09:04.080
  • The rabbi is--he's more important than anyone.
  • 00:09:04.090 --> 00:09:08.030
  • And the rabbi's main house is the synagogue.
  • 00:09:08.040 --> 00:09:11.000
  • And there is this troublemaker named Jesus,
  • 00:09:11.010 --> 00:09:13.280
  • who is a rabbi 100%, and now some people are saying he's a
  • 00:09:13.290 --> 00:09:17.260
  • prophet.
  • 00:09:17.270 --> 00:09:19.060
  • But he looks like these other people,
  • 00:09:19.070 --> 00:09:20.190
  • he doesn't really look and act as much like a rabbi.
  • 00:09:20.200 --> 00:09:24.040
  • They call him a drunkard and a glutton because of all the time
  • 00:09:24.050 --> 00:09:28.210
  • he spends eating and celebrating with people.
  • 00:09:28.220 --> 00:09:32.070
  • They think he is from the devil, I'm talking about religious
  • 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:34.160
  • people, because he heals on the Sabbath
  • 00:09:34.170 --> 00:09:37.110
  • and he does this other stuff.
  • 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:38.210
  • And so, but a lot of the religious leaders have mixed
  • 00:09:38.220 --> 00:09:40.010
  • feelings about him.
  • 00:09:40.020 --> 00:09:41.110
  • They're trying to, like, sort him out.
  • 00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:42.210
  • And I think that Jesus' teachings weren't the thing that
  • 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:46.120
  • were drawing people.
  • 00:09:46.130 --> 00:09:47.220
  • I think it was more that he was healing people.
  • 00:09:47.230 --> 00:09:50.100
  • I mean, imagine if there was some guy that everybody claimed
  • 00:09:50.110 --> 00:09:53.180
  • was just healing them.
  • 00:09:53.190 --> 00:09:54.280
  • And if I was an atheist, I would want to go see that guy,
  • 00:09:54.290 --> 00:09:56.090
  • wouldn't you?
  • 00:09:56.100 --> 00:09:57.190
  • So, he's just drawing everyone to him because of his healing.
  • 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:00.230
  • So, it's like there's this church service.
  • 00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:02.280
  • And this celebrity pastor, like, if it were today,
  • 00:10:02.290 --> 00:10:05.180
  • Jesus stand up and begins to preach.
  • 00:10:05.190 --> 00:10:08.140
  • And it doesn't say in Luke 13 what he's talking about,
  • 00:10:08.150 --> 00:10:13.260
  • but I believe he was talking about the kingdom of God,
  • 00:10:13.270 --> 00:10:16.220
  • that the kingdom of God is coming unto earth,
  • 00:10:16.230 --> 00:10:19.090
  • that it was here, that it was now,
  • 00:10:19.100 --> 00:10:21.280
  • and that God was going to begin to do incredible miracles in
  • 00:10:21.290 --> 00:10:24.260
  • Israel and around the world, that the fulfillment of the
  • 00:10:24.270 --> 00:10:27.140
  • covenant had come to pass in this person,
  • 00:10:27.150 --> 00:10:29.150
  • Jesus Christ.
  • 00:10:29.160 --> 00:10:30.250
  • Whatever it was that he was saying was enough to stir a
  • 00:10:30.260 --> 00:10:33.080
  • woman to stand up.
  • 00:10:33.090 --> 00:10:36.060
  • Now, in the synagogue, typically and not always,
  • 00:10:36.070 --> 00:10:39.010
  • the men and women were broken up,
  • 00:10:39.020 --> 00:10:40.210
  • so you had the men on the inside,
  • 00:10:40.220 --> 00:10:42.010
  • and the women sat on the outside.
  • 00:10:42.020 --> 00:10:44.020
  • They were separated.
  • 00:10:44.030 --> 00:10:45.120
  • It was--and a woman that everybody there knew who had
  • 00:10:45.130 --> 00:10:49.180
  • been bent over like this for 18 years in the middle of Jesus'
  • 00:10:49.190 --> 00:10:54.250
  • sermon, stands up.
  • 00:10:54.260 --> 00:10:58.180
  • She's sitting.
  • 00:10:58.190 --> 00:10:59.290
  • She would have been way in the back, though.
  • 00:11:00.020 --> 00:11:02.010
  • Stands up, and walks through all of these men.
  • 00:11:02.020 --> 00:11:06.160
  • Big cultural taboo, right?
  • 00:11:06.170 --> 00:11:09.010
  • Everybody's getting upset, but Jesus has the floor,
  • 00:11:09.020 --> 00:11:11.090
  • so why isn't he doing anything?
  • 00:11:11.100 --> 00:11:13.040
  • Walks up like this, walks up to Jesus,
  • 00:11:13.050 --> 00:11:16.120
  • and he looks at her, and he says--everybody knows this
  • 00:11:16.130 --> 00:11:22.050
  • woman, everybody.
  • 00:11:22.060 --> 00:11:24.240
  • "You are free."
  • 00:11:24.250 --> 00:11:28.160
  • This woman stands up for the first time like this.
  • 00:11:28.170 --> 00:11:33.170
  • Whoa, right?
  • 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:38.090
  • Amazing.
  • 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:40.050
  • How did the religious people respond to this miracle?
  • 00:11:40.060 --> 00:11:45.100
  • They stand up, they clap, they hoot, they holler.
  • 00:11:45.110 --> 00:11:49.100
  • They celebrate with joy, "Surely the kingdom of God is among us."
  • 00:11:49.110 --> 00:11:54.210
  • A revival breaks out, and amazing things happen, right?
  • 00:11:54.220 --> 00:11:58.270
  • No, no, no, no.
  • 00:11:58.280 --> 00:12:01.050
  • See, this woman with courage, to this very culturally--you know,
  • 00:12:01.060 --> 00:12:06.270
  • it's a shame society.
  • 00:12:06.280 --> 00:12:08.110
  • It would be a much bigger deal than someone doing
  • 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:10.250
  • that here, right?
  • 00:12:10.260 --> 00:12:12.050
  • I mean, it would be, like, a huge deal,
  • 00:12:12.060 --> 00:12:13.250
  • and the fact that Jesus did it.
  • 00:12:13.260 --> 00:12:15.050
  • So, then what happens is the local pastor,
  • 00:12:15.060 --> 00:12:17.170
  • this is the president of the synagogue, stands up.
  • 00:12:17.180 --> 00:12:19.230
  • And so, Jesus is sort of here.
  • 00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:21.030
  • And he sort of stands in front of Jesus with his back to Jesus,
  • 00:12:21.040 --> 00:12:23.200
  • and you can almost see this happening today.
  • 00:12:23.210 --> 00:12:28.130
  • And he goes, "All right, everybody.
  • 00:12:28.140 --> 00:12:31.100
  • All right, everyone, hey.
  • 00:12:31.110 --> 00:12:32.200
  • Look, there's 6 days a week you can come,
  • 00:12:32.210 --> 00:12:36.190
  • and Jesus will heal you.
  • 00:12:36.200 --> 00:12:38.250
  • He was here yesterday.
  • 00:12:38.260 --> 00:12:40.050
  • He's going to be around tomorrow and the next day.
  • 00:12:40.060 --> 00:12:42.040
  • He's told me he'll be here till Thursday.
  • 00:12:42.050 --> 00:12:44.020
  • There's two lunches this week, so please come to Jesus then.
  • 00:12:44.030 --> 00:12:49.270
  • But today is the Sabbath, and it is not right to heal
  • 00:12:49.280 --> 00:12:53.140
  • on the Sabbath.
  • 00:12:53.150 --> 00:12:54.240
  • So, if you have an infirmity, or a prayer request,
  • 00:12:54.250 --> 00:12:57.180
  • or anything like that, Jesus will be happy to meet with you,
  • 00:12:57.190 --> 00:13:00.160
  • but please wait until tomorrow."
  • 00:13:00.170 --> 00:13:02.100
  • All right, he doesn't even have the courage to say it to Jesus.
  • 00:13:02.110 --> 00:13:06.250
  • He says this to everyone else.
  • 00:13:06.260 --> 00:13:09.030
  • And then probably the man sits down,
  • 00:13:09.040 --> 00:13:11.280
  • crosses his legs smugly, and Jesus looks at him and he says,
  • 00:13:11.290 --> 00:13:15.240
  • "You hypocrite!"
  • 00:13:15.250 --> 00:13:19.200
  • He says, "On the Sabbath, you take your ox and your donkey,
  • 00:13:19.210 --> 00:13:24.050
  • and you lead them to water."
  • 00:13:24.060 --> 00:13:25.220
  • By the way, in I'm not sure what document it was,
  • 00:13:25.230 --> 00:13:28.040
  • I think it's the Mishnah, in Jewish tradition even still
  • 00:13:28.050 --> 00:13:31.070
  • today, you're allowed to care for your animals on the Sabbath.
  • 00:13:31.080 --> 00:13:33.190
  • You're allowed to take a donkey to water because,
  • 00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:37.010
  • rightly so in Judaism and in the Scripture,
  • 00:13:37.020 --> 00:13:39.140
  • it teaches Jews and Christians to treat animals with dignity.
  • 00:13:39.150 --> 00:13:43.120
  • So, Jews are very good at this, Christians typically are not.
  • 00:13:43.130 --> 00:13:45.220
  • If you go to Israel, they are really good about caring for
  • 00:13:45.230 --> 00:13:48.040
  • their animals.
  • 00:13:48.050 --> 00:13:49.140
  • In fact, so much of a kosher life is not just about eating,
  • 00:13:49.150 --> 00:13:52.040
  • it's about how you butcher, how to butcher in a humane way.
  • 00:13:52.050 --> 00:13:55.130
  • So, they still eat their animals,
  • 00:13:55.140 --> 00:13:57.030
  • but they do it in a way that is humane.
  • 00:13:57.040 --> 00:13:59.230
  • So, like when we were in Israel, they--one of our tour leaders
  • 00:13:59.240 --> 00:14:03.120
  • was saying this one particular farm,
  • 00:14:03.130 --> 00:14:05.230
  • when they milk their cows, they actually massage their cows
  • 00:14:05.240 --> 00:14:08.050
  • and play classical music.
  • 00:14:08.060 --> 00:14:09.150
  • And he said they give twice as much milk,
  • 00:14:09.160 --> 00:14:11.070
  • and it's better milk, you know.
  • 00:14:11.080 --> 00:14:14.160
  • Anyway, that's not--I digress.
  • 00:14:14.170 --> 00:14:17.120
  • But so, in Jewish law, you're allowed to
  • 00:14:17.130 --> 00:14:20.190
  • take a donkey to water.
  • 00:14:20.200 --> 00:14:21.290
  • But tradition now is saying that it was a grey area,
  • 00:14:22.000 --> 00:14:25.030
  • you can't heal on the Sabbath.
  • 00:14:25.040 --> 00:14:26.130
  • And Jesus says, "You take your donkey to water,
  • 00:14:26.140 --> 00:14:28.230
  • but," he says, "but this daughter of Abraham has to
  • 00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:34.200
  • wait?"
  • 00:14:34.210 --> 00:14:36.180
  • I want you to remember that phrase for a moment,
  • 00:14:36.190 --> 00:14:38.130
  • but I want to pause here just for a second.
  • 00:14:38.140 --> 00:14:41.030
  • This was--Jesus was addressing a systemic issue in the religious
  • 00:14:43.050 --> 00:14:48.040
  • community of his day that was the rules are more important
  • 00:14:48.050 --> 00:14:53.110
  • than people.
  • 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:55.230
  • Tradition is more important than people.
  • 00:14:55.240 --> 00:15:00.230
  • And what people were inferring was that God cared more about
  • 00:15:00.240 --> 00:15:05.150
  • the rules than he did about people.
  • 00:15:05.160 --> 00:15:08.220
  • And that, I believe, is what was driving Jesus crazy.
  • 00:15:08.230 --> 00:15:13.180
  • Not crazy, but angry.
  • 00:15:13.190 --> 00:15:18.200
  • How many of you are still listening to those voices?
  • 00:15:18.210 --> 00:15:22.140
  • And some of you are here today, especially those of you who have
  • 00:15:22.150 --> 00:15:25.230
  • grown up in a church, or maybe you're just coming back to
  • 00:15:25.240 --> 00:15:28.190
  • faith, but you're still confused about faith because of something
  • 00:15:28.200 --> 00:15:33.160
  • some religious leader told you.
  • 00:15:33.170 --> 00:15:36.060
  • That you have this idea in your head that God is not a
  • 00:15:36.070 --> 00:15:39.160
  • rulebreaker.
  • 00:15:39.170 --> 00:15:41.170
  • You have this idea in your head that God cares more about the
  • 00:15:42.090 --> 00:15:46.150
  • consistencies, that every I is dotted,
  • 00:15:46.160 --> 00:15:48.270
  • and every T is crossed, than he does about my soul.
  • 00:15:48.280 --> 00:15:52.080
  • Can I just tell you that God's your dad in a good way?
  • 00:15:52.090 --> 00:15:56.000
  • Maybe you didn't have a loving dad
  • 00:15:56.010 --> 00:15:57.100
  • and you don't know what that's like.
  • 00:15:57.110 --> 00:15:58.200
  • But can I just tell you, as a dad,
  • 00:15:58.210 --> 00:16:01.200
  • how overflowing with joy and love I am for my kids?
  • 00:16:01.210 --> 00:16:06.280
  • Can I say God is proud of you?
  • 00:16:06.290 --> 00:16:08.230
  • God is proud of you.
  • 00:16:08.240 --> 00:16:11.120
  • A handful of you, and I feel like the Lord put this on my
  • 00:16:11.130 --> 00:16:13.130
  • heart, just responded with, "God's not proud of me,
  • 00:16:13.140 --> 00:16:16.280
  • not after what I've done."
  • 00:16:16.290 --> 00:16:18.270
  • Can I tell you something?
  • 00:16:18.280 --> 00:16:20.240
  • I am so proud of my children.
  • 00:16:20.250 --> 00:16:23.050
  • I have a 4-year-old and a 6-year-old.
  • 00:16:23.060 --> 00:16:24.220
  • I am so proud of them.
  • 00:16:24.230 --> 00:16:26.090
  • They haven't done anything.
  • 00:16:26.100 --> 00:16:28.180
  • Like really, they haven't done anything.
  • 00:16:28.190 --> 00:16:30.190
  • My wife tells me Haven's drawing some pictures.
  • 00:16:32.160 --> 00:16:34.140
  • Can I just tell you I am not--I am not proud of my daughter
  • 00:16:34.150 --> 00:16:39.030
  • because she drew some pictures.
  • 00:16:39.040 --> 00:16:41.140
  • But I will say all those pictures are on my wall because
  • 00:16:41.150 --> 00:16:44.130
  • they represent how proud I am of my daughter.
  • 00:16:44.140 --> 00:16:48.130
  • If she messed up a drawing, I wouldn't love her less,
  • 00:16:48.140 --> 00:16:50.240
  • okay?
  • 00:16:50.250 --> 00:16:52.120
  • But this is important because we make God different than dad,
  • 00:16:52.130 --> 00:16:56.230
  • but Jesus is always calling God, "Father."
  • 00:16:56.240 --> 00:17:03.080
  • He wants you to know God's your loving dad.
  • 00:17:03.090 --> 00:17:08.250
  • And man, some of you, I can almost feel it,
  • 00:17:08.260 --> 00:17:10.270
  • you're saying, "My dad was a horrible person."
  • 00:17:10.280 --> 00:17:13.240
  • I'm so sorry for you.
  • 00:17:13.250 --> 00:17:16.040
  • And I want you to know God's going to fill that void by being
  • 00:17:16.050 --> 00:17:18.130
  • your true Father, and he's going to begin to heal your heart and
  • 00:17:18.140 --> 00:17:21.270
  • your mind, and you're going to see what it's like to have a
  • 00:17:21.280 --> 00:17:26.100
  • loving--a loving Father in your life.
  • 00:17:26.110 --> 00:17:28.180
  • God is not a gender.
  • 00:17:28.190 --> 00:17:29.280
  • You know, we use it, but still, he plays this role of
  • 00:17:29.290 --> 00:17:33.000
  • dad in our lives.
  • 00:17:33.010 --> 00:17:34.120
  • And it's so, so important.
  • 00:17:34.130 --> 00:17:36.190
  • So anyway, I digress.
  • 00:17:36.200 --> 00:17:39.010
  • So, Jesus was really frustrated by the way these people
  • 00:17:39.020 --> 00:17:41.280
  • were teaching.
  • 00:17:41.290 --> 00:17:43.080
  • I'll finish with this.
  • 00:17:43.090 --> 00:17:44.180
  • Jesus says, "This daughter of Abraham," huh,
  • 00:17:44.190 --> 00:17:50.010
  • this daughter of Abraham.
  • 00:17:50.020 --> 00:17:51.180
  • Can I have--are there two men that are wearing,
  • 00:17:51.190 --> 00:17:53.090
  • like, a jacket like mine, like a suit jacket?
  • 00:17:53.100 --> 00:17:55.240
  • Terrific, that's about right. All right, guys.
  • 00:17:55.250 --> 00:17:59.260
  • Rich, you already know what I'm going to do because you were in
  • 00:17:59.270 --> 00:18:01.090
  • the first service, weren't you?
  • 00:18:01.100 --> 00:18:03.040
  • Okay, great, all right.
  • 00:18:03.050 --> 00:18:04.190
  • When Jesus says, "This daughter of Abraham is appealing to
  • 00:18:04.200 --> 00:18:12.220
  • covenant," all right, covenant, covenant was
  • 00:18:12.230 --> 00:18:16.080
  • not invented by the Jews.
  • 00:18:16.090 --> 00:18:17.180
  • It was actually a very pagan, near-Eastern way of making a
  • 00:18:17.190 --> 00:18:20.280
  • promise, and God uses that.
  • 00:18:20.290 --> 00:18:23.020
  • Isn't that crazy? I really love this.
  • 00:18:23.030 --> 00:18:25.150
  • So, God uses this bizarre method of unifying two groups of people
  • 00:18:25.160 --> 00:18:31.010
  • to make a promise to Abraham.
  • 00:18:31.020 --> 00:18:33.080
  • Bryan leads a tribe of warriors.
  • 00:18:33.090 --> 00:18:35.200
  • And all of these people, they're warriors.
  • 00:18:35.210 --> 00:18:37.040
  • Some of the women fight in some of these cultures,
  • 00:18:37.050 --> 00:18:40.080
  • sometimes women are blacksmiths, and the men are the soldiers.
  • 00:18:40.090 --> 00:18:42.280
  • And Rich is from a family of farmers.
  • 00:18:42.290 --> 00:18:47.270
  • So, they're really good at growing,
  • 00:18:47.280 --> 00:18:49.170
  • and baking, and you should taste their pasta.
  • 00:18:49.180 --> 00:18:52.040
  • So, these two groups, right, the food makers and the fighters.
  • 00:18:52.050 --> 00:18:56.050
  • And they both need each other.
  • 00:18:56.060 --> 00:18:58.010
  • And so, what happens is these two chiefs come together to make
  • 00:18:58.020 --> 00:19:01.090
  • a covenant, so covenant is sort of like shake hands.
  • 00:19:01.100 --> 00:19:03.290
  • But you'd grab the forearms, you know,
  • 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:05.120
  • the tribal way.
  • 00:19:05.130 --> 00:19:06.220
  • Forearms like that, yeah, the clan.
  • 00:19:06.230 --> 00:19:10.000
  • And Bryan would say to him, "I covenant with you," or,
  • 00:19:10.010 --> 00:19:17.090
  • "I promise to you that we will defend your family forever.
  • 00:19:17.100 --> 00:19:22.200
  • That everyone in my family and everyone in my tribe will die
  • 00:19:22.210 --> 00:19:28.150
  • defending until--to make sure not one scratch
  • 00:19:28.160 --> 00:19:33.080
  • is on anyone in your tribe.
  • 00:19:33.090 --> 00:19:34.180
  • We will do whatever we can to defend you and to fight for
  • 00:19:34.190 --> 00:19:37.140
  • you."
  • 00:19:37.150 --> 00:19:38.240
  • And Rich, Rich would say, "And the chief of my tribe of
  • 00:19:38.250 --> 00:19:42.260
  • farmers, we will do anything to make sure you are fed,
  • 00:19:42.270 --> 00:19:47.200
  • cared for, and you have everything you need.
  • 00:19:47.210 --> 00:19:49.180
  • You will never go hungry."
  • 00:19:49.190 --> 00:19:51.070
  • And Rich would say, "If we hit a famine,
  • 00:19:51.080 --> 00:19:53.000
  • we will give you the flesh off our very bones so that you will
  • 00:19:53.010 --> 00:19:56.180
  • not starve, and that we will die in your place."
  • 00:19:56.190 --> 00:19:59.070
  • And this covenant will be made, and then they'll create whatever
  • 00:19:59.080 --> 00:20:01.170
  • tradition it is, they'll create a path of blood.
  • 00:20:01.180 --> 00:20:04.020
  • I know, it's like a horror movie.
  • 00:20:04.030 --> 00:20:06.090
  • Got the blood, the carcasses on either side,
  • 00:20:06.100 --> 00:20:09.100
  • and then they walk in the blood.
  • 00:20:09.110 --> 00:20:11.150
  • So walk--oh, wait, sorry, they change coats,
  • 00:20:11.160 --> 00:20:14.060
  • so take your coats off, take your jacket off.
  • 00:20:14.070 --> 00:20:16.210
  • Oh, hang on a minute.
  • 00:20:16.220 --> 00:20:18.140
  • Okay, take your jacket off, and trade coats.
  • 00:20:18.150 --> 00:20:20.290
  • The coat was a symbol of the leadership of the tribe.
  • 00:20:21.000 --> 00:20:23.230
  • There you go.
  • 00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:25.030
  • All right, here, I'll help you out.
  • 00:20:25.040 --> 00:20:29.120
  • It's like I'm at Nordstrom here.
  • 00:20:29.130 --> 00:20:31.090
  • All right.
  • 00:20:31.100 --> 00:20:34.030
  • And can you do it?
  • 00:20:34.040 --> 00:20:39.040
  • Okay, careful.
  • 00:20:41.040 --> 00:20:43.270
  • You look concerned.
  • 00:20:43.280 --> 00:20:48.030
  • Okay.
  • 00:20:48.040 --> 00:20:49.210
  • And then you walk back and forth like this,
  • 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:52.100
  • just start walking, "I will protect you, I will feed you."
  • 00:20:52.110 --> 00:20:56.070
  • And they begin to say the things in their covenant with one
  • 00:20:56.080 --> 00:20:59.010
  • another like this.
  • 00:20:59.020 --> 00:21:01.070
  • Go back and forth, "I will be there for you."
  • 00:21:01.080 --> 00:21:03.230
  • And what they say is, "If I break this covenant,
  • 00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:06.000
  • let this happen to me," and they're looking at the blood of
  • 00:21:06.010 --> 00:21:08.110
  • these animals, okay?
  • 00:21:08.120 --> 00:21:09.290
  • All right, thanks, guys, you can change coats,
  • 00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:12.030
  • and maybe clap for them and thank them.
  • 00:21:12.040 --> 00:21:17.270
  • Very nice, thank you.
  • 00:21:17.280 --> 00:21:19.280
  • And so, this has existed for thousands of years.
  • 00:21:19.290 --> 00:21:22.130
  • And God decides to do this with Abraham.
  • 00:21:22.140 --> 00:21:26.220
  • And when God does this with Abraham,
  • 00:21:26.230 --> 00:21:30.040
  • the promise is, "I will make your nation as numbered as the
  • 00:21:30.050 --> 00:21:34.110
  • sky, and you will be blessed, and you will be a
  • 00:21:34.120 --> 00:21:37.220
  • blessing to the world."
  • 00:21:37.230 --> 00:21:39.020
  • That's the promise.
  • 00:21:39.030 --> 00:21:40.140
  • Other parts in Deuteronomy 28 and other things,
  • 00:21:40.150 --> 00:21:42.140
  • they say things like--the covenant says like,
  • 00:21:42.150 --> 00:21:44.250
  • "You will be--" So, God does this with Abraham,
  • 00:21:44.260 --> 00:21:47.120
  • "You and your descendants, you will be the head
  • 00:21:47.130 --> 00:21:49.110
  • and not the tail.
  • 00:21:49.120 --> 00:21:51.020
  • You will be above and not beneath.
  • 00:21:51.030 --> 00:21:53.140
  • Your baskets will be filled.
  • 00:21:53.150 --> 00:21:55.150
  • Your barns will be filled.
  • 00:21:55.160 --> 00:21:57.030
  • The fruit of your womb will be filled."
  • 00:21:57.040 --> 00:21:59.190
  • And it continues to go on and on about--you read it,
  • 00:21:59.200 --> 00:22:02.270
  • this amazing stuff, that you'll be blessed,
  • 00:22:02.280 --> 00:22:05.190
  • that you'll be a blessing to the world.
  • 00:22:05.200 --> 00:22:06.290
  • And Galatians 3:26 says, "So in Christ Jesus,
  • 00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:15.090
  • you are all children of God through faith.
  • 00:22:15.100 --> 00:22:19.210
  • For all of you were baptized into Christ and have clothed
  • 00:22:19.220 --> 00:22:22.080
  • yourself with Christ.
  • 00:22:22.090 --> 00:22:24.180
  • There is neither Jew nor Gentile,
  • 00:22:24.190 --> 00:22:27.100
  • neither slave nor free.
  • 00:22:27.110 --> 00:22:30.000
  • Nor is there male nor female, for you are all one
  • 00:22:30.010 --> 00:22:33.190
  • in Christ Jesus.
  • 00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:34.290
  • If you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's seed,
  • 00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:38.170
  • and heirs according to the promise."
  • 00:22:38.180 --> 00:22:42.040
  • That's your covenant.
  • 00:22:42.050 --> 00:22:44.000
  • That's your promise.
  • 00:22:44.010 --> 00:22:46.040
  • God is for you, and he will be faithful to the promise to you.
  • 00:22:46.050 --> 00:22:51.020
  • God is on your side, he's for you, he loves you.
  • 00:22:51.030 --> 00:22:53.210
  • Have faith in that.
  • 00:22:53.220 --> 00:22:55.220
  • And a big part of that is just sitting in the mystery.
  • 00:22:55.230 --> 00:22:58.070
  • I know there's so many unanswered questions,
  • 00:22:58.080 --> 00:23:00.140
  • but faith is about not knowing all the way.
  • 00:23:00.150 --> 00:23:03.030
  • It's about knowing something, that God loves me,
  • 00:23:03.040 --> 00:23:05.030
  • and that it's going to be okay.
  • 00:23:05.040 --> 00:23:06.130
  • And it is. It's going to be okay.
  • 00:23:06.140 --> 00:23:08.130
  • So, go have fun today.
  • 00:23:08.140 --> 00:23:11.290
  • Go enjoy your day with people you love,
  • 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:13.240
  • and don't include people you don't like.
  • 00:23:13.250 --> 00:23:15.230
  • On Sabbath, you can do that, on Sunday, you know?
  • 00:23:15.240 --> 00:23:18.190
  • Have a joy-filled, restful, life-giving day.
  • 00:23:18.200 --> 00:23:24.290
  • And just enjoy God's love and power for you.
  • 00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:28.210
  • And do something good for somebody, all right?
  • 00:23:28.220 --> 00:23:32.060
  • Let's pray.
  • 00:23:32.070 --> 00:23:33.160
  • Father, we thank you in Jesus' name.
  • 00:23:33.170 --> 00:23:35.210
  • You love us, God.
  • 00:23:35.220 --> 00:23:38.090
  • Thank you that, I mean, we don't deserve it,
  • 00:23:38.100 --> 00:23:41.000
  • but you love us, God, and you favor us.
  • 00:23:41.010 --> 00:23:43.290
  • And you're a God of second chances.
  • 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:46.000
  • And you've built a church here, Shepherd's Grove,
  • 00:23:46.010 --> 00:23:47.280
  • of second chances.
  • 00:23:47.290 --> 00:23:49.230
  • Lord, we're leaning into you, and loving the great things that
  • 00:23:49.240 --> 00:23:52.090
  • you're doing in our life.
  • 00:23:52.100 --> 00:23:53.190
  • And so, I just pray, God, for everybody here that's feeling
  • 00:23:53.200 --> 00:23:55.040
  • hopeless, build hope in our hearts.
  • 00:23:55.050 --> 00:23:57.280
  • Anybody here that's just kind of grieving tomorrow and work and
  • 00:23:57.290 --> 00:24:02.190
  • everything, Lord, help us to be present,
  • 00:24:02.200 --> 00:24:05.030
  • just enjoy the day that we have today,
  • 00:24:05.040 --> 00:24:06.290
  • enjoy your presence.
  • 00:24:07.000 --> 00:24:08.160
  • Lord, we love you in Jesus' name,
  • 00:24:08.170 --> 00:24:09.270
  • amen.
  • 00:24:09.280 --> 00:24:12.080
  • - male announcer: When you give to our ministry,
  • 00:24:12.090 --> 00:24:14.010
  • we want to say a small thank you.
  • 00:24:14.020 --> 00:24:15.250
  • So, when you give a gift of $40 or more,
  • 00:24:15.260 --> 00:24:18.160
  • we will send you a Creed of the Beloved tumbler.
  • 00:24:18.170 --> 00:24:21.200
  • Let it be a reminder that God is your provider.
  • 00:24:21.210 --> 00:24:25.130
  • - Bobby: Every single week, we get literally thousands of
  • 00:24:25.140 --> 00:24:28.030
  • letters from people all around the world who tell us that their
  • 00:24:28.040 --> 00:24:32.000
  • lives were radically transformed.
  • 00:24:32.010 --> 00:24:33.130
  • Every single letter we get, we open and we read it.
  • 00:24:33.140 --> 00:24:36.170
  • Every prayer request we get, we pray for those people.
  • 00:24:36.180 --> 00:24:39.200
  • And every time we do it, our team is so encouraged.
  • 00:24:39.210 --> 00:24:43.110
  • And we're encouraged because lives are being changed.
  • 00:24:43.120 --> 00:24:45.270
  • We want you to know that that's not our doing,
  • 00:24:45.280 --> 00:24:47.240
  • that's your doing.
  • 00:24:47.250 --> 00:24:49.110
  • When you give to this ministry, you are making such a big impact
  • 00:24:49.120 --> 00:24:53.220
  • on people's lives.
  • 00:24:53.230 --> 00:24:55.090
  • This is crazy.
  • 00:24:55.100 --> 00:24:56.190
  • Like, every week, we have to raise lots and lots of money to
  • 00:24:56.200 --> 00:24:58.120
  • pay for airtime.
  • 00:24:58.130 --> 00:24:59.220
  • If one month goes by that we don't get money,
  • 00:24:59.230 --> 00:25:01.110
  • we go off the air.
  • 00:25:01.120 --> 00:25:02.210
  • And we are so, so thankful for your generosity.
  • 00:25:02.220 --> 00:25:06.020
  • Here's one story that was touched because
  • 00:25:06.030 --> 00:25:08.160
  • of your generosity.
  • 00:25:08.170 --> 00:25:10.000
  • - female: Dear Bobby, I am an inmate at a correctional
  • 00:25:10.010 --> 00:25:12.070
  • facility here in Tennessee.
  • 00:25:12.080 --> 00:25:15.060
  • I have been incarcerated since February 1998,
  • 00:25:15.070 --> 00:25:18.250
  • but only recently discovered "Hour of Power."
  • 00:25:18.260 --> 00:25:22.020
  • I am a stronger, more seeking Christian because of the message
  • 00:25:22.030 --> 00:25:26.110
  • Jesus gives through you.
  • 00:25:26.120 --> 00:25:28.020
  • And even I, a sinner who is locked away for a crime,
  • 00:25:28.030 --> 00:25:32.170
  • still feel the love and forgiveness of Christ.
  • 00:25:32.180 --> 00:25:36.190
  • You have helped me realize that, though many may look down upon
  • 00:25:36.200 --> 00:25:40.040
  • me, God controls everything.
  • 00:25:40.050 --> 00:25:42.290
  • I am forgiven, loved, and want to be a part of life again.
  • 00:25:43.000 --> 00:25:48.110
  • I will be going home within the next few years.
  • 00:25:48.120 --> 00:25:50.110
  • It's scary to consider what that will be like,
  • 00:25:50.120 --> 00:25:53.230
  • but you have given me hope and faith.
  • 00:25:53.240 --> 00:25:56.020
  • I thank you, and I send you this high five in praise and
  • 00:25:56.030 --> 00:26:00.070
  • gratitude for what Christ does through you.
  • 00:26:00.080 --> 00:26:02.240

  • High five right back at you.
  • 00:26:07.020 --> 00:26:09.010
  • Seriously, you are not what you do,
  • 00:26:09.020 --> 00:26:10.140
  • you're not what you have, you're not what people say about you.
  • 00:26:10.150 --> 00:26:12.250
  • We believe that for you.
  • 00:26:12.260 --> 00:26:14.220
  • We love you, and we're rooting for you.
  • 00:26:14.230 --> 00:26:16.090

  • stories of people who are touched because of your giving.
