  • No matter where you are, you'll find a home here.
  • 00:03:01.120 --> 00:03:03.220
  • Hey, let's say this together.
  • 00:03:03.230 --> 00:03:05.170
  • Would you hold your hands out like this
  • 00:03:05.180 --> 00:03:07.070
  • as a sign of receiving?
  • 00:03:07.080 --> 00:03:09.090
  • "I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:03:09.100 --> 00:03:12.080
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:03:12.090 --> 00:03:15.140
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:03:15.150 --> 00:03:19.170
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:03:19.180 --> 00:03:24.050
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:03:24.060 --> 00:03:27.000
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world."
  • 00:03:27.010 --> 00:03:32.020
  • Thanks, you can be seated.
  • 00:03:32.030 --> 00:03:36.100
  • Today, if you hear nothing else that I say, I want you to hear
  • 00:03:36.110 --> 00:03:39.120
  • something--and this is actually a direct quote
  • 00:03:39.130 --> 00:03:41.180
  • from my other grandpa.
  • 00:03:41.190 --> 00:03:44.030
  • It is this: Believe in the God who believes in you.
  • 00:03:44.040 --> 00:03:48.220
  • Today I want you to know something.
  • 00:03:48.230 --> 00:03:52.010
  • That God really does believe in you, that God is on your side,
  • 00:03:52.020 --> 00:03:55.210
  • and that God is rooting for you.
  • 00:03:55.220 --> 00:03:58.090
  • Today I am doing something that is a little audacious.
  • 00:03:58.100 --> 00:04:00.230
  • I've been wanting to do this for a long time,
  • 00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:02.170
  • because a lot of people hate this topic.
  • 00:04:02.180 --> 00:04:04.160
  • We're gonna start the series on the Ten Commandment.
  • 00:04:04.170 --> 00:04:09.290
  • I've heard too many preachers either pass off the Ten
  • 00:04:10.230 --> 00:04:15.100
  • Commandments--I've heard many amazing men and women of God
  • 00:04:15.110 --> 00:04:20.280
  • sort of say, "The only reason for the Ten Commandments, or the
  • 00:04:20.290 --> 00:04:24.170
  • only reason for The Sermon on the Mount is simply
  • 00:04:24.180 --> 00:04:27.060
  • to show us how sinful we are."
  • 00:04:27.070 --> 00:04:29.210
  • I don't believe that.
  • 00:04:29.220 --> 00:04:31.020
  • If you've gone here for a long time, I don't think
  • 00:04:31.030 --> 00:04:33.050
  • that's why God gave us these commands.
  • 00:04:33.060 --> 00:04:36.270
  • I think God gave us these commands because he loves us.
  • 00:04:36.280 --> 00:04:40.010
  • The Ten Commandments are an amazing thing.
  • 00:04:40.020 --> 00:04:42.110
  • When you think about the Bible in and of itself, Christianity
  • 00:04:42.120 --> 00:04:44.280
  • and Judaism are different than other religions,
  • 00:04:44.290 --> 00:04:47.250
  • because our divine text came through people.
  • 00:04:47.260 --> 00:04:51.050
  • We believe that the Spirit of God, the Ruach Elohim, came
  • 00:04:51.060 --> 00:04:54.250
  • into prophets, and came into different people, and through
  • 00:04:54.260 --> 00:04:58.220
  • inspiration they wrote the infallible perfect Word of God.
  • 00:04:58.230 --> 00:05:02.280
  • But most other texts from other religions is kind of like the
  • 00:05:02.290 --> 00:05:06.050
  • heavens open and a literal book came down.
  • 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:08.250
  • So that's, in a way, what makes our sacred
  • 00:05:08.260 --> 00:05:10.160
  • text a little different.
  • 00:05:10.170 --> 00:05:12.130
  • So for us, as Christians and Jews, we have to weigh
  • 00:05:12.140 --> 00:05:15.140
  • language and culture and things like this, except for
  • 00:05:15.150 --> 00:05:18.260
  • a couple of things.
  • 00:05:18.270 --> 00:05:22.090
  • One is all the sermons of Jesus Christ, and the
  • 00:05:22.100 --> 00:05:24.190
  • other is the Ten Commandment.
  • 00:05:24.200 --> 00:05:26.200
  • There might be other parts, like, that I'm not thinking of,
  • 00:05:26.210 --> 00:05:28.280
  • but I'm sure I'll get tweeted about this.
  • 00:05:28.290 --> 00:05:30.190
  • But as far as I know, the Ten Commandments are the only part
  • 00:05:30.200 --> 00:05:33.200
  • of the Old Testament where God, literally, wrote it by hand on
  • 00:05:33.210 --> 00:05:39.010
  • tablets, handed it to Moses, and said "Do this."
  • 00:05:39.020 --> 00:05:45.090
  • That's pretty sweet.
  • 00:05:45.100 --> 00:05:47.000
  • And all of the Word of God is important, but I believe that
  • 00:05:47.010 --> 00:05:50.140
  • there's a reason the Ten Commandments has been the most
  • 00:05:50.150 --> 00:05:53.060
  • widely accepted moral code in human history, that for over
  • 00:05:53.070 --> 00:05:58.000
  • 3.000 years this has been a pillar of civilization.
  • 00:05:58.010 --> 00:06:02.190
  • I believe it's a good thing. And I--and this is what I think.
  • 00:06:02.200 --> 00:06:07.080
  • I believe at the heart of the Ten Commandments is dignity, the
  • 00:06:07.090 --> 00:06:12.170
  • right of every single person to live every day with choice, with
  • 00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:17.060
  • liberty, to own property, to make their own decisions,
  • 00:06:17.070 --> 00:06:20.200
  • to not be violated, and to be free to live their own
  • 00:06:20.210 --> 00:06:23.030
  • life without molestation of other people.
  • 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:26.070
  • I believe at the heart of the Ten Commandments is actually
  • 00:06:26.080 --> 00:06:29.130
  • freedom, believe it or not, that the heart of the Ten
  • 00:06:29.140 --> 00:06:32.100
  • Commandments is to create a culture of dignity and liberty.
  • 00:06:32.110 --> 00:06:36.230
  • And I believe, think about it, if everyone actually followed
  • 00:06:36.240 --> 00:06:39.240
  • the Ten Commandments, and no one will follow them perfectly, but
  • 00:06:39.250 --> 00:06:42.260
  • if everybody followed them perfectly, I think Dennis
  • 00:06:42.270 --> 00:06:44.280
  • Prager made this point when we had our interview,
  • 00:06:44.290 --> 00:06:47.160
  • nobody would have to lock their cars.
  • 00:06:47.170 --> 00:06:49.240
  • Women would feel safe walking home at night.
  • 00:06:49.250 --> 00:06:52.040
  • There would, literally, be nothing you'd have
  • 00:06:52.050 --> 00:06:53.270
  • to worry about.
  • 00:06:53.280 --> 00:06:55.230
  • So the thing we wanna be careful about is following the
  • 00:06:55.240 --> 00:06:57.150
  • Ten Commandments won't get you into heaven.
  • 00:06:57.160 --> 00:06:59.150
  • Trusting in Jesus Christ will.
  • 00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:01.170
  • But following the Ten Commandments will bring heaven
  • 00:07:01.180 --> 00:07:03.070
  • to earth, and that's why I think it's important.
  • 00:07:03.080 --> 00:07:05.250
  • The more we believe in the Ten Commandments and live them out
  • 00:07:05.260 --> 00:07:08.270
  • as a society, the more free, full, and life-giving
  • 00:07:08.280 --> 00:07:12.130
  • our society will become.
  • 00:07:12.140 --> 00:07:15.030
  • Ten Commandments must be at the heart of our culture.
  • 00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:18.030
  • I believe the Ten Commandments very simply are this:
  • 00:07:18.040 --> 00:07:21.160
  • it's ten ways to, basically, be a decent person.
  • 00:07:21.170 --> 00:07:25.260
  • They're not gonna--it's not gonna make you perfect,
  • 00:07:25.270 --> 00:07:28.110
  • but can we start there?
  • 00:07:28.120 --> 00:07:30.200
  • Just how do we treat one another decently?
  • 00:07:30.210 --> 00:07:33.140
  • And that's why it's so foundational and so important.
  • 00:07:33.150 --> 00:07:38.020
  • And we're gonna spend some time knowing these Ten Commandments.
  • 00:07:38.030 --> 00:07:41.200
  • So let's begin. What is the first commandment?
  • 00:07:41.210 --> 00:07:47.270
  • Okay, so you may have heard a mumbling, because there are two
  • 00:07:50.290 --> 00:07:55.040
  • opposing views about what the first commandment is.
  • 00:07:55.050 --> 00:07:59.210
  • Almost every Christian tradition has the first commandments as:
  • 00:07:59.220 --> 00:08:04.120
  • You shall have no other Gods before me.
  • 00:08:04.130 --> 00:08:07.180
  • But in Judaism, and I think they count, because they wrote the
  • 00:08:07.190 --> 00:08:10.150
  • Ten--well, God wrote the Ten Commandment.
  • 00:08:10.160 --> 00:08:12.070
  • So they gave them to us in the Talmud.
  • 00:08:12.080 --> 00:08:14.210
  • And in only our denomination I believe, the reformed church in
  • 00:08:14.220 --> 00:08:17.050
  • America, we believe in a different first commandment.
  • 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:21.080
  • Like, wait, how can it be different?
  • 00:08:21.090 --> 00:08:23.150
  • Because God didn't put numbers on it.
  • 00:08:23.160 --> 00:08:25.280
  • He just--he's like, "Here they go."
  • 00:08:25.290 --> 00:08:27.220
  • There was no numbers on those tablets.
  • 00:08:27.230 --> 00:08:29.280
  • Those numbers were added later in a document called the Talmud.
  • 00:08:29.290 --> 00:08:33.150
  • And so later on in the 13th century Catholics changed the
  • 00:08:33.160 --> 00:08:36.030
  • numbers around, and most Christians
  • 00:08:36.040 --> 00:08:37.290
  • adapted those new numbers.
  • 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:40.250
  • So they're almost the same except for
  • 00:08:40.260 --> 00:08:42.270
  • one commandment and that's the first one.
  • 00:08:42.280 --> 00:08:45.140
  • So we're going to teach the Jewish way, all right?
  • 00:08:45.150 --> 00:08:47.220
  • Is that okay?
  • 00:08:47.230 --> 00:08:49.100
  • You don't get to change a Jewish text, all right?
  • 00:08:49.110 --> 00:08:51.000
  • You just don't get to do that if you're not a Jew, all right?
  • 00:08:51.010 --> 00:08:54.020
  • So--and I think it's important.
  • 00:08:54.030 --> 00:08:56.140
  • I think Christians have missed out by not endorsing this
  • 00:08:56.150 --> 00:09:00.100
  • as the first commandment.
  • 00:09:00.110 --> 00:09:02.190
  • And this is the first commandment: I am the
  • 00:09:02.200 --> 00:09:05.120
  • Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt,
  • 00:09:05.130 --> 00:09:09.260
  • out of the land of slavery."
  • 00:09:09.270 --> 00:09:12.240
  • Now, you can see why a lot of Christians change it, right?
  • 00:09:12.250 --> 00:09:15.260
  • Why did they change it? That ain't no command.
  • 00:09:15.270 --> 00:09:19.040
  • That's a statement. How is that a command?
  • 00:09:19.050 --> 00:09:23.000
  • I believe it is a command.
  • 00:09:23.010 --> 00:09:25.220
  • I believe it is a command that basically says this:
  • 00:09:25.230 --> 00:09:29.140
  • Believe in the God who believes in you.
  • 00:09:29.150 --> 00:09:33.140
  • Believe in the God who believes in you.
  • 00:09:33.150 --> 00:09:37.080
  • "I am a God that is on your side.
  • 00:09:37.090 --> 00:09:40.170
  • I am a God that believes in you. I am a God that is for you.
  • 00:09:40.180 --> 00:09:45.050
  • You are my people. I am your God.
  • 00:09:45.060 --> 00:09:47.160
  • You will not be in slavery, but you will go
  • 00:09:47.170 --> 00:09:49.170
  • to the Promised Land.
  • 00:09:49.180 --> 00:09:51.050
  • I am on your side.
  • 00:09:51.060 --> 00:09:52.230
  • Know me. Trust me.
  • 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:54.040
  • Know me. Trust me.
  • 00:09:54.200 --> 00:09:56.000
  • Know me. Trust me."
  • 00:09:56.180 --> 00:09:59.010
  • If we don't get this one right the other nine won't work,
  • 00:09:59.020 --> 00:10:01.230
  • because what we'll be trying to do is simply doing morals
  • 00:10:01.240 --> 00:10:05.050
  • we don't wanna do that doesn't feel good.
  • 00:10:05.060 --> 00:10:07.120
  • If you start with this as the first commandment you believe
  • 00:10:07.130 --> 00:10:10.150
  • that the things that you're learning are for the purpose
  • 00:10:10.160 --> 00:10:13.000
  • of giving me the fullest, richest life possible.
  • 00:10:13.010 --> 00:10:17.010
  • That's good.
  • 00:10:17.020 --> 00:10:19.030
  • At the heart of, "I am the Lord your God who brought you out
  • 00:10:19.040 --> 00:10:21.090
  • of the land of slavery," is this: "I'm on your side.
  • 00:10:21.100 --> 00:10:24.270
  • Know me, and trust me."
  • 00:10:24.280 --> 00:10:27.010
  • Maybe today you're watching and you just think, or you're here
  • 00:10:27.020 --> 00:10:29.050
  • in the church and just think, "God hasn't been on my side,"
  • 00:10:29.060 --> 00:10:30.290
  • or, "God's not on my side."
  • 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:32.210
  • He is.
  • 00:10:32.220 --> 00:10:34.190
  • And that doesn't mean life isn't hard.
  • 00:10:34.200 --> 00:10:36.110
  • And it doesn't mean you won't go through challenges.
  • 00:10:36.120 --> 00:10:37.230
  • It doesn't mean you won't be stretched.
  • 00:10:37.240 --> 00:10:39.030
  • It doesn't mean you won't get sick.
  • 00:10:39.040 --> 00:10:40.170
  • I doesn't mean you won't face battles.
  • 00:10:40.180 --> 00:10:42.010
  • But it does mean this: God will carry you through.
  • 00:10:42.020 --> 00:10:43.270
  • He will carry you out of slavery, and he will bring you
  • 00:10:43.280 --> 00:10:45.110
  • to your Promised Land.
  • 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:46.280
  • Have faith, and don't give up on him.
  • 00:10:46.290 --> 00:10:49.060
  • In the Torah so many of these people who are brought out of
  • 00:10:49.070 --> 00:10:53.220
  • slavery and are wandering through the desert towards the
  • 00:10:53.230 --> 00:10:56.240
  • Promised Land, for years, and years, and years moaned and
  • 00:10:56.250 --> 00:10:59.260
  • complained to Moses, "Bring us back to Egypt.
  • 00:10:59.270 --> 00:11:02.100
  • We wanna go back to slavery."
  • 00:11:02.110 --> 00:11:04.000
  • And that is the temptation of living in the in-between.
  • 00:11:04.010 --> 00:11:06.240
  • Maybe you're there today.
  • 00:11:06.250 --> 00:11:08.280
  • Maybe you're in that wilderness, and you're waiting to get
  • 00:11:08.290 --> 00:11:11.100
  • to your Promised Land.
  • 00:11:11.110 --> 00:11:13.140
  • And sometime you think, "I'm just going back to slavery.
  • 00:11:13.150 --> 00:11:15.010
  • I'm just gonna go back. I just wanna go back."
  • 00:11:15.020 --> 00:11:16.180
  • And God is saying, "No.
  • 00:11:16.190 --> 00:11:18.290
  • Not only are you not going back, you don't have a choice.
  • 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:21.110
  • I'm not letting you go back to slavery.
  • 00:11:21.120 --> 00:11:23.080
  • I am going to carry you kicking and screaming
  • 00:11:23.090 --> 00:11:26.040
  • to the Promised Land."
  • 00:11:26.050 --> 00:11:27.260
  • And that's very good news, isn't it?
  • 00:11:27.270 --> 00:11:29.200
  • I believe that with all my heart.
  • 00:11:29.210 --> 00:11:31.180
  • Because in spite of all my flaws and all of my sin, God has
  • 00:11:31.190 --> 00:11:34.040
  • blessed us and carried through every storm.
  • 00:11:34.050 --> 00:11:36.020
  • And he will carry you, too. God is on your side.
  • 00:11:36.030 --> 00:11:39.050
  • So, today, believe in the God who believes in you.
  • 00:11:39.060 --> 00:11:42.260
  • So the first thing is this.
  • 00:11:42.270 --> 00:11:45.040
  • The first expect of this commandment is a command
  • 00:11:45.050 --> 00:11:47.220
  • to know and to trust that God is on your side.
  • 00:11:47.230 --> 00:11:51.250
  • And he is.
  • 00:11:51.260 --> 00:11:54.050
  • And I think, and this is my own personal commentary, but Bobby
  • 00:11:54.060 --> 00:11:56.200
  • Schuller thinks the second command is, really, that
  • 00:11:56.210 --> 00:11:59.190
  • everyone deserves dignity, and that everyone deserves liberty.
  • 00:11:59.200 --> 00:12:04.180
  • I think this is a command about the awfulness of slavery.
  • 00:12:04.190 --> 00:12:09.160
  • Slavery has been so common in history.
  • 00:12:09.170 --> 00:12:12.100
  • In our modern era much of it has been wiped out.
  • 00:12:12.110 --> 00:12:15.100
  • But, actually, there are more slaves today than there have
  • 00:12:15.110 --> 00:12:17.240
  • ever been in history.
  • 00:12:17.250 --> 00:12:19.110
  • And there is nothing more degrading and dehumanizing.
  • 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:24.020
  • In other words, there's nothing more opposite of liberty
  • 00:12:24.030 --> 00:12:26.230
  • and opposite of dignity than slavery.
  • 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:30.090
  • God hates slavery, because God loves people,
  • 00:12:30.100 --> 00:12:33.230
  • and because God gave us choice.
  • 00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:35.230
  • God gave you will, choice, decision.
  • 00:12:35.240 --> 00:12:39.080
  • God gave you the power to lead your own life.
  • 00:12:39.090 --> 00:12:42.060
  • And people wanna take that away. They do.
  • 00:12:42.070 --> 00:12:45.040
  • People wanna take that away.
  • 00:12:45.050 --> 00:12:46.260
  • To use you, to make you--and God's not gonna
  • 00:12:46.270 --> 00:12:49.160
  • allow that to happen.
  • 00:12:49.170 --> 00:12:52.070
  • There's a, sort of, deeper meaning here, too.
  • 00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:53.270
  • Many of us have found ourselves enslaved by this and that.
  • 00:12:53.280 --> 00:12:57.170
  • Enslaved by poverty. Enslaved by lack.
  • 00:12:57.180 --> 00:13:03.080
  • Enslaved by sin, addiction.
  • 00:13:03.090 --> 00:13:06.250
  • Enslaved by the need to prove yourself.
  • 00:13:06.260 --> 00:13:08.250
  • Enslaved by depression or anxiety.
  • 00:13:08.260 --> 00:13:12.000
  • Look, God doesn't want you enslaved.
  • 00:13:12.010 --> 00:13:14.230
  • In Jesus' name he's gonna break every chain in your life.
  • 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:18.020
  • He's gonna break every chain in your life.
  • 00:13:18.030 --> 00:13:21.220
  • He is a good God. You can trust him.
  • 00:13:21.230 --> 00:13:24.170
  • He loves you. He's on your side.
  • 00:13:24.180 --> 00:13:26.270
  • He's gonna carry you through to the Promised Land.
  • 00:13:26.280 --> 00:13:29.290
  • That's a promise, and it's a command.
  • 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:33.010
  • "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt,
  • 00:13:33.020 --> 00:13:36.240
  • out of the land of slavery."
  • 00:13:36.250 --> 00:13:39.030
  • You ain't going back. You are not going back to Egypt.
  • 00:13:39.040 --> 00:13:42.080
  • You are not going back to slavery.
  • 00:13:42.090 --> 00:13:44.060
  • You'll enter the Promised Land.
  • 00:13:44.070 --> 00:13:46.000
  • And it's gonna mean you're gonna have to cross some rivers, and
  • 00:13:46.010 --> 00:13:47.260
  • cross some deserts, and slay some giants,
  • 00:13:47.270 --> 00:13:49.250
  • but we're gonna get there together.
  • 00:13:49.260 --> 00:13:51.140
  • We're gonna do this.
  • 00:13:51.150 --> 00:13:53.020
  • That's what the first commandment's about,
  • 00:13:53.030 --> 00:13:54.190
  • and it's very hopeful.
  • 00:13:54.200 --> 00:13:56.060
  • Don't you agree?
  • 00:13:56.070 --> 00:13:58.180
  • So I believe at the heart of the Ten Commandments, and at the
  • 00:13:58.190 --> 00:14:02.050
  • Word of God, in general, and at living a life of character,
  • 00:14:02.060 --> 00:14:05.010
  • integrity, a moral life, I believe that living for God
  • 00:14:05.020 --> 00:14:08.280
  • is the best place to be.
  • 00:14:08.290 --> 00:14:11.250
  • Society seems to wanna give you a choice.
  • 00:14:11.260 --> 00:14:16.040
  • Sometimes we also make this choice on our own accord,
  • 00:14:16.050 --> 00:14:18.090
  • by society seems to wanna give you this choice.
  • 00:14:18.100 --> 00:14:20.120
  • You have a choice between a good life
  • 00:14:20.130 --> 00:14:22.060
  • that is a moral life and a full life.
  • 00:14:22.070 --> 00:14:23.250
  • You have a choice between a moral life and a full life.
  • 00:14:23.260 --> 00:14:26.160
  • Which do you choose? And that is a lie.
  • 00:14:26.170 --> 00:14:29.260
  • I have lived in sin long enough to know that
  • 00:14:29.270 --> 00:14:33.070
  • a sinful life is not a full life.
  • 00:14:33.080 --> 00:14:36.140
  • To know that a life without boundaries, without morals,
  • 00:14:36.150 --> 00:14:39.050
  • without integrity, a life of hiddenness, a life a fakeness,
  • 00:14:39.060 --> 00:14:43.010
  • a life of mask-wearing, a life of shame is
  • 00:14:43.020 --> 00:14:46.050
  • not a full life to live.
  • 00:14:46.060 --> 00:14:49.090
  • If I've learned anything it's that living a vulnerable life,
  • 00:14:49.100 --> 00:14:52.020
  • warts and all, and the grace of Jesus Christ, striving for
  • 00:14:52.030 --> 00:14:54.250
  • righteousness, growing in my Christ-likeness
  • 00:14:54.260 --> 00:14:57.250
  • is the best place to live.
  • 00:14:57.260 --> 00:15:00.290
  • To live every moment with the faith and the confidence that
  • 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:04.030
  • comes with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:15:04.040 --> 00:15:07.240
  • Society says, "What do you want? Goodness or fullness?"
  • 00:15:07.250 --> 00:15:10.140
  • God says, "You can have goodness and fullness."
  • 00:15:10.150 --> 00:15:13.030
  • In fact, the only way to be good is to be filled up,
  • 00:15:13.040 --> 00:15:14.270
  • and the only way to be filled up is to be good.
  • 00:15:14.280 --> 00:15:17.060
  • That's the kingdom of God.
  • 00:15:17.070 --> 00:15:19.160
  • I think so much of life is, sort of, like having a battery pack.
  • 00:15:19.170 --> 00:15:25.190
  • It's like so much of life is about energy.
  • 00:15:25.200 --> 00:15:28.080
  • And I think many of us have a lot of stuff going on under the
  • 00:15:28.090 --> 00:15:32.000
  • surface that every day is draining just a
  • 00:15:32.010 --> 00:15:35.050
  • little bit of that battery.
  • 00:15:35.060 --> 00:15:37.220
  • That we're finishing each day wondering,
  • 00:15:37.230 --> 00:15:39.210
  • "Why am I completely out of energy?"
  • 00:15:39.220 --> 00:15:43.200
  • And there are a lot of reasons for this, but I think one of
  • 00:15:43.210 --> 00:15:45.250
  • them is that we live our life without
  • 00:15:45.260 --> 00:15:47.280
  • boundaries and without rules.
  • 00:15:47.290 --> 00:15:50.200
  • So I have seen people who live their life without rules and
  • 00:15:50.210 --> 00:15:55.100
  • without boundaries, and they are exhausted, and they are sick.
  • 00:15:55.110 --> 00:15:58.220
  • If you've ever been a young person, you
  • 00:15:58.230 --> 00:16:01.040
  • probably know what that's like.
  • 00:16:01.050 --> 00:16:03.280
  • You probably know what it's like to live a life that
  • 00:16:03.290 --> 00:16:06.030
  • with--completely without boundaries or rules.
  • 00:16:06.040 --> 00:16:10.060
  • Having rules, in other words, having a moral compass,
  • 00:16:10.070 --> 00:16:13.130
  • or having a sense of what is right and
  • 00:16:13.140 --> 00:16:15.200
  • wrong actually gives you freedom.
  • 00:16:15.210 --> 00:16:18.270
  • It really does.
  • 00:16:18.280 --> 00:16:20.280
  • And, actually, living a life without rules
  • 00:16:20.290 --> 00:16:22.260
  • is not really a fun life.
  • 00:16:22.270 --> 00:16:24.210
  • It's like a game without rules.
  • 00:16:24.220 --> 00:16:27.010
  • Have you ever tried to play a game without rules?
  • 00:16:27.020 --> 00:16:29.110
  • It's not fun.
  • 00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:31.110
  • I play games with my kids all the time and I hate it,
  • 00:16:31.120 --> 00:16:33.260
  • because there's no rules.
  • 00:16:33.270 --> 00:16:35.170
  • It's so boring.
  • 00:16:35.180 --> 00:16:37.110
  • "You win. I win.
  • 00:16:37.120 --> 00:16:39.010
  • We all win. It's about having fun."
  • 00:16:39.020 --> 00:16:40.260
  • It's not about having fun. It's about winning.
  • 00:16:40.270 --> 00:16:44.250
  • Winning is fun. Losing is not fun.
  • 00:16:44.260 --> 00:16:49.030
  • Losing teaches me I wanna have fun by winning.
  • 00:16:49.040 --> 00:16:51.250
  • No, I--and just imagine, you know, you and a bunch
  • 00:16:51.260 --> 00:16:53.210
  • of friends go out into a soccer field with a ball,
  • 00:16:53.220 --> 00:16:56.040
  • and you decide everybody's just gonna make up their own rules.
  • 00:16:56.050 --> 00:16:58.050
  • Is that fun? Ya having a good time?
  • 00:16:58.060 --> 00:17:00.280
  • Wacky scores. Wacky boundaries.
  • 00:17:00.290 --> 00:17:03.280
  • Who knows? And life is like that.
  • 00:17:03.290 --> 00:17:07.160
  • You know, a life with rules, a life with boundaries,
  • 00:17:07.170 --> 00:17:10.200
  • a life with integrity, a life of a moral compass
  • 00:17:10.210 --> 00:17:13.020
  • is actually a fun life.
  • 00:17:13.030 --> 00:17:15.240
  • I wanna convince you that studying the Word of God
  • 00:17:15.250 --> 00:17:18.240
  • and being a person of integrity is the fullest,
  • 00:17:18.250 --> 00:17:20.270
  • richest life you can life.
  • 00:17:20.280 --> 00:17:23.250
  • You just have to understand it right.
  • 00:17:23.260 --> 00:17:25.250
  • And can I just throw in one little bonus?
  • 00:17:25.260 --> 00:17:28.020
  • I believe there is actually a reward for
  • 00:17:28.030 --> 00:17:31.080
  • those who seek righteousness.
  • 00:17:31.090 --> 00:17:33.160
  • I believe there is a material, today kind of reward.
  • 00:17:33.170 --> 00:17:37.020
  • I asked the question, literally.
  • 00:17:37.030 --> 00:17:39.280
  • I thought it before, but I'm like,
  • 00:17:39.290 --> 00:17:42.040
  • "Is this in the Word of God?"
  • 00:17:42.050 --> 00:17:44.120
  • A few weeks ago I began to study to just see if there was in the
  • 00:17:44.130 --> 00:17:46.140
  • Bible a correlation between righteousness and blessing.
  • 00:17:46.150 --> 00:17:50.020
  • And there's so many passages on it.
  • 00:17:50.030 --> 00:17:52.030
  • I can, literally, do--just go all day reading the passages.
  • 00:17:52.040 --> 00:17:55.030
  • You want me to read a couple of them?
  • 00:17:55.040 --> 00:17:56.250
  • How Deuteronomy 28, the most famous?
  • 00:17:56.260 --> 00:17:59.030
  • He says, "All of these blessings will come on you and accompany
  • 00:17:59.040 --> 00:18:02.090
  • you if you obey the Lord your God.
  • 00:18:02.100 --> 00:18:04.140
  • You'll be blessing in the city and blessed in the country.
  • 00:18:04.150 --> 00:18:06.260
  • The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your
  • 00:18:06.270 --> 00:18:09.170
  • land and the young of your livestock--the calves of your
  • 00:18:09.180 --> 00:18:12.100
  • herds and the lambs of your flocks.
  • 00:18:12.110 --> 00:18:14.150
  • Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.
  • 00:18:14.160 --> 00:18:17.010
  • You will be blessed when you come in.
  • 00:18:17.020 --> 00:18:19.270
  • You will be blessed when you go out.
  • 00:18:19.280 --> 00:18:22.020
  • The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of bounty, to
  • 00:18:22.030 --> 00:18:23.210
  • send rain on your land in the season and bless
  • 00:18:23.220 --> 00:18:26.010
  • all of the work of your hands.
  • 00:18:26.020 --> 00:18:28.080
  • You will lend to many nations, but will borrow from none.
  • 00:18:28.090 --> 00:18:30.200
  • The Lord will make you the head and not the tail.
  • 00:18:30.210 --> 00:18:33.000
  • If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God
  • 00:18:33.010 --> 00:18:35.210
  • is giving you this day and carefully follow them,
  • 00:18:35.220 --> 00:18:38.210
  • you will always be at the top and never at the bottom.
  • 00:18:38.220 --> 00:18:41.250
  • Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today,
  • 00:18:41.260 --> 00:18:45.060
  • to the right or to the left, following other gods
  • 00:18:45.070 --> 00:18:48.060
  • and serving them."
  • 00:18:48.070 --> 00:18:49.260
  • Is that pretty clear? Whoa.
  • 00:18:49.270 --> 00:18:54.160
  • Even in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus talks--he says,
  • 00:18:54.170 --> 00:18:56.280
  • "You guys always worry, 'What are we gonna eat?
  • 00:18:56.290 --> 00:18:58.270
  • What are we gonna wear? What are we gonna do?'
  • 00:18:58.280 --> 00:19:00.230
  • You worry about all these things that pagans worry about."
  • 00:19:00.240 --> 00:19:02.260
  • And then he says, "But seek first the kingdom and--.
  • 00:19:02.270 --> 00:19:05.210
  • His what? His righteousness.
  • 00:19:05.220 --> 00:19:10.010
  • And then what'll happen?
  • 00:19:10.020 --> 00:19:11.250
  • "And all those things will be added to you."
  • 00:19:11.260 --> 00:19:14.280
  • You think he's talking about heavenly blessing there?
  • 00:19:14.290 --> 00:19:16.210
  • Maybe, but he specifically is talking
  • 00:19:16.220 --> 00:19:18.270
  • about clothes, money, health.
  • 00:19:18.280 --> 00:19:21.080
  • I mean, he's talking about real things today.
  • 00:19:21.090 --> 00:19:24.200
  • So I just wanna throw this out there.
  • 00:19:24.210 --> 00:19:26.250
  • I know, everybody's like, "Uh, oh," you know?
  • 00:19:26.260 --> 00:19:29.220
  • "Laser," you know? "Sword eyes."
  • 00:19:29.230 --> 00:19:32.160
  • "Are you saying that there's an actual, material, benefit
  • 00:19:32.170 --> 00:19:35.070
  • blessing for those who seek after righteousness?"
  • 00:19:35.080 --> 00:19:37.280
  • Let me just clear the air. Yes, I am.
  • 00:19:37.290 --> 00:19:42.010
  • Because the Word of God says it, and I don't
  • 00:19:42.020 --> 00:19:44.010
  • see any way around it.
  • 00:19:44.020 --> 00:19:45.250
  • And though I can't always explain some of
  • 00:19:45.260 --> 00:19:47.170
  • the ins and outs of it, I believe.
  • 00:19:47.180 --> 00:19:49.230
  • I think today I just can't finish today without giving you
  • 00:19:49.240 --> 00:19:53.150
  • the opportunity to make a decision.
  • 00:19:53.160 --> 00:19:58.090
  • That's really the problem.
  • 00:19:58.100 --> 00:20:00.140
  • Many of us, we hear things like this, we think things like this,
  • 00:20:00.150 --> 00:20:02.150
  • but we leave and then we go and get nachos, and we go
  • 00:20:02.160 --> 00:20:06.160
  • and watch football, and you just, kinda, forget.
  • 00:20:06.170 --> 00:20:10.150
  • And I just feel like I need to put it to you.
  • 00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:15.180
  • When Joshua was entering the Promised Land he said to the
  • 00:20:15.190 --> 00:20:19.060
  • people, "Many of you have been worshiping idols,
  • 00:20:19.070 --> 00:20:22.010
  • and you've also been worshiping God.
  • 00:20:22.020 --> 00:20:24.070
  • You've been doing both.
  • 00:20:24.080 --> 00:20:26.010
  • But the Lord says to you, 'You have to make a decision.
  • 00:20:26.020 --> 00:20:28.210
  • You have to make a decision.
  • 00:20:28.220 --> 00:20:30.280
  • You can't live for one and the other.
  • 00:20:30.290 --> 00:20:32.270
  • You must make a decision.' "
  • 00:20:32.280 --> 00:20:34.230
  • And then Joshua famously says, "As for me and my house,
  • 00:20:34.240 --> 00:20:36.280
  • we will serve the Lord."
  • 00:20:36.290 --> 00:20:39.070
  • And today I'm calling you.
  • 00:20:39.080 --> 00:20:41.060
  • I'm gonna, actually, offer you the chance to come down right
  • 00:20:41.070 --> 00:20:43.020
  • now and become a happy and whole student of Jesus.
  • 00:20:43.030 --> 00:20:46.090
  • We don't do this much here.
  • 00:20:46.100 --> 00:20:48.260
  • But I'm, actually, gonna challenge you to stand up in
  • 00:20:48.270 --> 00:20:50.290
  • front of everybody and walk down here.
  • 00:20:51.000 --> 00:20:53.030
  • Maybe you've fallen behind, and you need to get your life right.
  • 00:20:53.040 --> 00:20:55.220
  • Or maybe today you need to make a decision for God.
  • 00:20:55.230 --> 00:20:58.190
  • I just wanna say this to you: Nothing would bring more joy to
  • 00:20:58.200 --> 00:21:01.280
  • my heart, to the heart of God, and to the people sitting with
  • 00:21:01.290 --> 00:21:04.190
  • you then for you to come down and to receive Christ.
  • 00:21:04.200 --> 00:21:07.280
  • And so today I'm gonna ask you to make a decision.
  • 00:21:07.290 --> 00:21:10.190
  • Many of you have already made this decision.
  • 00:21:10.200 --> 00:21:12.080
  • That's fine.
  • 00:21:12.090 --> 00:21:14.130
  • But for some of you, you've been teetering, you've been riding
  • 00:21:14.140 --> 00:21:16.090
  • the fence, and you need to make a choice.
  • 00:21:16.100 --> 00:21:18.230
  • Normally, pastors say, "I want ever head down,
  • 00:21:18.240 --> 00:21:20.170
  • every eye closed."
  • 00:21:20.180 --> 00:21:22.240
  • I want every head up, chin up, everybody lookin' around.
  • 00:21:22.250 --> 00:21:25.130
  • Lookin' around. Look behind you.
  • 00:21:25.140 --> 00:21:27.180
  • Look at your neighbor.
  • 00:21:27.190 --> 00:21:30.090
  • I think that becoming a Christian begins
  • 00:21:30.100 --> 00:21:32.100
  • with an act of courage.
  • 00:21:32.110 --> 00:21:34.140
  • It means that not sneaking silently and quietly while
  • 00:21:34.150 --> 00:21:37.080
  • nobody really can hold me--I want everybody,
  • 00:21:37.090 --> 00:21:39.220
  • I want a thousand people to see you stand and say,
  • 00:21:39.230 --> 00:21:43.000
  • "I'm making a decision."
  • 00:21:43.010 --> 00:21:45.140
  • And if not, I don't care.
  • 00:21:45.150 --> 00:21:47.150
  • I want you, I want you to do something brave.
  • 00:21:47.160 --> 00:21:50.030
  • And so in this moment I'm going to ask, even now, if you wanna
  • 00:21:50.040 --> 00:21:52.130
  • receive Christ, just stand up where you are and just walk down
  • 00:21:52.140 --> 00:21:57.160
  • right here, right now.
  • 00:21:57.170 --> 00:22:01.210
  • And I'm gonna ask the organ plays, too.
  • 00:22:01.220 --> 00:22:03.280
  • Make the silence not so awkward. Thank you, Joco.
  • 00:22:03.290 --> 00:22:09.190
  • The first one's always the bravest.
  • 00:22:09.200 --> 00:22:12.110
  • It always--you know, the first one's always the bravest,
  • 00:22:12.120 --> 00:22:15.060
  • but I think that counts.
  • 00:22:15.070 --> 00:22:21.060
  • Thank you.
  • 00:22:21.070 --> 00:22:23.010
  • If you wanna receive Christ--thank you--then
  • 00:22:23.020 --> 00:22:29.030
  • just come down here, friends.
  • 00:22:29.040 --> 00:22:31.090
  • Just come right here. Thank you.
  • 00:22:31.100 --> 00:22:36.070
  • Thanks. Come down.
  • 00:22:36.080 --> 00:22:40.130
  • Look, if you're not sure, just come down anyway.
  • 00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:46.270
  • Like, it's not gonna hurt you.
  • 00:22:46.280 --> 00:22:49.080
  • Like, are you worried about your reputation?
  • 00:22:49.090 --> 00:22:51.200
  • Maybe you're thinking, like,
  • 00:22:51.210 --> 00:22:53.180
  • "Oh, my family and friends are here.
  • 00:22:53.190 --> 00:22:55.030
  • I'll do it later."
  • 00:22:55.040 --> 00:22:56.290
  • What if there is no later?
  • 00:22:57.000 --> 00:22:58.280
  • Life is short and life is unpredictable.
  • 00:22:58.290 --> 00:23:02.090
  • And there will be a time in your life where you may remember this
  • 00:23:02.100 --> 00:23:06.080
  • as the most important decision you ever made.
  • 00:23:06.090 --> 00:23:14.040
  • And you say, "Well, I'll stand up for God on my own."
  • 00:23:14.050 --> 00:23:17.020
  • If you can't stand up for God in church, how are you
  • 00:23:17.030 --> 00:23:19.020
  • gonna stand up for God in the world?
  • 00:23:19.030 --> 00:23:22.180
  • How ya gonna do that? So, Lord is here.
  • 00:23:22.190 --> 00:23:27.270
  • Don't feel shame. Feel joy, feel alive.
  • 00:23:27.280 --> 00:23:31.080
  • Come and receive the goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 00:23:31.090 --> 00:23:34.160
  • Come receive eternal life. If you're not sure, just come.
  • 00:23:34.170 --> 00:23:37.070
  • It's okay, thank you, friends, for coming down,
  • 00:23:37.080 --> 00:23:42.000
  • and for making a public decision that, "I wanna,"
  • 00:23:42.010 --> 00:23:46.070
  • wherever you are, "I wanna make a decision to follow Christ
  • 00:23:46.080 --> 00:23:50.040
  • and to walk as a Christian."
  • 00:23:50.050 --> 00:23:52.090
  • So I'm gonna ask you to pray this with me.
  • 00:23:52.100 --> 00:23:54.140
  • And, friends, would you pray with me?
  • 00:23:54.150 --> 00:23:55.270
  • And if you're watching on TV, join us in this prayer.
  • 00:23:55.280 --> 00:23:57.170
  • This is available to everyone.
  • 00:23:57.180 --> 00:23:59.050
  • Maybe hold your hands out like this, church,
  • 00:23:59.060 --> 00:24:00.180
  • towards these people.
  • 00:24:00.190 --> 00:24:01.290
  • And everybody who's here do this as a sign
  • 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:03.160
  • of receiving like this.
  • 00:24:03.170 --> 00:24:04.280
  • Receiving goodness.
  • 00:24:04.290 --> 00:24:06.160
  • You're gonna receive a blessing, and joy,
  • 00:24:06.170 --> 00:24:08.090
  • and life, and forgiveness.
  • 00:24:08.100 --> 00:24:10.010
  • So say this after me, "Jesus Christ, I trust in you.
  • 00:24:10.020 --> 00:24:14.270
  • Fill me with your Spirit. Forgive me of my sins.
  • 00:24:14.280 --> 00:24:20.140
  • Teach me your ways, and write my name in the Lamb's Book of Life.
  • 00:24:20.150 --> 00:24:26.220
  • I trust you and love you. In Jesus' name I pray, amen."
  • 00:24:26.230 --> 00:24:34.150
  • And, Lord, I pray a special blessing over these people.
  • 00:24:34.160 --> 00:24:37.000
  • If there's those who've made a decision in their chairs or at
  • 00:24:37.010 --> 00:24:39.090
  • home, I pray in Jesus' name that everything would change
  • 00:24:39.100 --> 00:24:42.250
  • in their life for the better.
  • 00:24:42.260 --> 00:24:45.090
  • That whatever they're going through, Lord, I pray in Jesus'
  • 00:24:45.100 --> 00:24:47.200
  • name that sin, that addiction, that all--that worry, that fear,
  • 00:24:47.210 --> 00:24:51.220
  • that anxiety, that sickness, Lord, these things
  • 00:24:51.230 --> 00:24:54.000
  • be removed from them.
  • 00:24:54.010 --> 00:24:55.190
  • That is a part of the curse.
  • 00:24:55.200 --> 00:24:57.130
  • And, Lord, the cross has taken all those things from us
  • 00:24:57.140 --> 00:24:59.070
  • and given us life.
  • 00:24:59.080 --> 00:25:01.080
  • And so I pray that they receive that life and receive
  • 00:25:01.090 --> 00:25:02.290
  • the Holy Spirit in Jesus' name, amen.
  • 00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:06.030
  • Hannah Schuller: Here's another life the Lord is
  • 00:25:07.260 --> 00:25:09.200
  • touching because of your generosity.
  • 00:25:09.210 --> 00:25:11.220
  • Steven: Dear Pastor Bobby, I'm currently incarcerated for
  • 00:25:11.230 --> 00:25:14.020
  • theft, but I may not be a typical convict.
  • 00:25:14.030 --> 00:25:17.050
  • Like you, I was a full-time minister for 25 years.
  • 00:25:17.060 --> 00:25:20.130
  • After a painful experience at a church where I served for many
  • 00:25:20.140 --> 00:25:22.290
  • years, I was left with a deep wound and later attempted to
  • 00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:26.170
  • take my own life.
  • 00:25:26.180 --> 00:25:28.290
  • My life spiraled downward and I began gambling and stealing,
  • 00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:31.210
  • which led to where I am now.
  • 00:25:31.220 --> 00:25:33.240
  • But now my pride and my life has been broken into pieces.
  • 00:25:33.250 --> 00:25:36.190
  • I tell you this to say how much I need
  • 00:25:36.200 --> 00:25:38.150
  • the "Hour of Power" each week.
  • 00:25:38.160 --> 00:25:40.160
  • Thanks to your messages God is putting me back together.
  • 00:25:40.170 --> 00:25:42.260
  • This week you said, "This is your life story
  • 00:25:42.270 --> 00:25:45.170
  • and you haven't read the ending yet."
  • 00:25:45.180 --> 00:25:47.130
  • Though I have lots of guilt, I need to forgive myself.
  • 00:25:47.140 --> 00:25:49.070
  • I know God's love is irrevocable,
  • 00:25:49.080 --> 00:25:51.060
  • and he can still use me.
  • 00:25:51.070 --> 00:25:53.040
  • Thanks for helping on this journey.
  • 00:25:53.050 --> 00:25:55.000
  • You are God's vessel to me each week.
  • 00:25:55.010 --> 00:25:57.100
  • He uses you in a powerful way. So thank you.
  • 00:25:57.110 --> 00:26:00.030
  • Sincerely, Steven."
  • 00:26:00.040 --> 00:26:02.290
  • Hannah: Steven, the hardest thing about your story is from
  • 00:26:04.130 --> 00:26:06.150
  • the saying that, "we only receive the amount of love
  • 00:26:06.160 --> 00:26:08.280
  • we think we deserve."
  • 00:26:08.290 --> 00:26:10.280
  • If you are anything like me, it is so easy to feel riddled
  • 00:26:10.290 --> 00:26:14.040
  • with guilt and shame.
  • 00:26:14.050 --> 00:26:17.030
  • But the Lord has made you worthy, Steven, of the most
  • 00:26:17.040 --> 00:26:21.010
  • profound love known to humankind right now
  • 00:26:21.020 --> 00:26:24.120
  • where you are in your jail cell.
  • 00:26:24.130 --> 00:26:26.240
  • And gambling and theft addiction,
  • 00:26:26.250 --> 00:26:29.060
  • that is not your story.
  • 00:26:29.070 --> 00:26:31.130
  • That may be one chapter of your story, but the Lord is calling
  • 00:26:31.140 --> 00:26:34.110
  • you to dream big and to create a story that changes souls.
  • 00:26:34.120 --> 00:26:39.040
  • Bobby: That's right, Steven. We're behind you 100%.
  • 00:26:39.050 --> 00:26:41.150
  • I can't wait to see how God works in your life.
  • 00:26:41.160 --> 00:26:43.220
  • For everybody else that's watching, you know, this is
  • 00:26:43.230 --> 00:26:45.290
  • just one of thousands of stories of people who've been touched
  • 00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:48.070
  • because of your generosity.
  • 00:26:48.080 --> 00:26:50.010
  • Summer is a tough time for charities.
  • 00:26:50.020 --> 00:26:52.080
  • A lot of times they see a big dip.
  • 00:26:52.090 --> 00:26:54.040
  • We saw that, and so we need your support now more than ever
  • 00:26:54.050 --> 00:26:56.070
  • so we can continue to help people like Steven.
  • 00:26:56.080 --> 00:26:59.040
  • male announcer: This week when you donate to our ministry
  • 00:26:59.050 --> 00:27:01.270
  • we want to say a small, "thank you."
  • 00:27:01.280 --> 00:27:03.280
  • So when you give a gift of $30 or more, we'll send you this,
  • 00:27:03.290 --> 00:27:08.040
  • "Hour of Power," Beloved tote bag.
  • 00:27:08.050 --> 00:27:10.240
  • Let it be a daily reminder that you are beloved just as you are.
  • 00:27:10.250 --> 00:27:15.110
  • Your support is changing lives, so thank you for being
  • 00:27:15.120 --> 00:27:18.280
  • a part of our church family.
  • 00:27:18.290 --> 00:27:21.030
  • Call, write, or go online now.
  • 00:27:21.040 --> 00:27:24.100
