- about money and finances,
- 00:00:03.090 --> 00:00:04.210
- but that's exactly what we're gonna do today.
- 00:00:04.210 --> 00:00:08.050
- So many of us struggle to reach our financial goals.
- 00:00:08.050 --> 00:00:10.290
- But what if you could pay off all of your debt,
- 00:00:10.290 --> 00:00:14.280
- save for the future,
- 00:00:14.280 --> 00:00:16.180
- and turn your money into a tool that helps you bring
- 00:00:16.180 --> 00:00:21.020
- joy, freedom, and blessings to other people
- 00:00:21.020 --> 00:00:24.290
- that are around you?
- 00:00:24.290 --> 00:00:26.160
- I'm Pastor Robert Morris, and over the last 30 years
- 00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:30.000
- I've seen that God has a perfect plan
- 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:32.220
- to overcome all financial stress.
- 00:00:32.220 --> 00:00:36.160
- I believe that generosity is the key
- 00:00:36.160 --> 00:00:39.030
- to living a blessed life.
- 00:00:39.030 --> 00:00:40.190
- But before we can be generous,
- 00:00:40.190 --> 00:00:43.010
- we have to learn to be wise and faithful stewards
- 00:00:43.010 --> 00:00:46.120
- of the resources that God entrusts to us.
- 00:00:46.120 --> 00:00:49.000
- And the Bible is full of practical lessons
- 00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:52.200
- that show us how to do just that.
- 00:00:52.200 --> 00:00:55.030
- I wanna equip you to bless others,
- 00:00:55.030 --> 00:00:57.190
- and to experience the fullness of God's blessings
- 00:00:57.190 --> 00:01:01.130
- in your own life.
- 00:01:01.130 --> 00:01:02.210
- Wherever you are today, you can start living
- 00:01:02.210 --> 00:01:06.020
- Beyond Blessed.
- 00:01:06.020 --> 00:01:08.240
- (upbeat music)
- 00:01:08.240 --> 00:01:11.120
- (crowd applauds)
- 00:01:18.220 --> 00:01:19.250
- Thank you.
- 00:01:19.250 --> 00:01:21.100
- Thank all you guys for joining us in the studio,
- 00:01:21.100 --> 00:01:23.280
- and thank you for joining us at home.
- 00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:25.250
- Welcome to Beyond Blessed,
- 00:01:25.250 --> 00:01:27.210
- we're talking about that God desires to bless us
- 00:01:27.210 --> 00:01:31.180
- even beyond what we could think or imagine.
- 00:01:31.180 --> 00:01:35.060
- But there is a purpose.
- 00:01:35.060 --> 00:01:36.280
- The purpose is He wants us and desires us to be a blessing.
- 00:01:36.280 --> 00:01:41.280
- I also wanna say this right here,
- 00:01:42.260 --> 00:01:44.050
- God blesses us also just because He loves us.
- 00:01:44.050 --> 00:01:47.060
- Just because He loves us, He really does.
- 00:01:47.060 --> 00:01:49.080
- He loves you, think about this.
- 00:01:49.080 --> 00:01:51.150
- Here's what Jesus said, "If you know how to
- 00:01:51.150 --> 00:01:53.200
- "give good gifts to your children, how much more
- 00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:56.290
- "does the Father know how to give good gifts
- 00:01:56.290 --> 00:01:58.230
- "to His children?"
- 00:01:58.230 --> 00:02:00.080
- And so God does like to bless us because He loves us,
- 00:02:00.080 --> 00:02:03.100
- but He also blesses us according to Abraham
- 00:02:03.100 --> 00:02:06.280
- the Abrahamic covenant,
- 00:02:06.280 --> 00:02:08.140
- so that we can be a blessing.
- 00:02:08.140 --> 00:02:10.290
- So what we're doing is we're talking about today
- 00:02:10.290 --> 00:02:13.110
- the 10 Financial Commandments.
- 00:02:13.110 --> 00:02:15.200
- Now let me just say this,
- 00:02:15.200 --> 00:02:17.060
- because there are 10 of 'em I put this in two shows.
- 00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:20.090
- And so I've already covered the first five,
- 00:02:20.090 --> 00:02:22.210
- so today I'm gonna cover the next five, or the last five.
- 00:02:22.210 --> 00:02:27.090
- And so you just wanna catch that other show, okay?
- 00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:29.270
- But let's also remind you we're gonna start at number six
- 00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:34.090
- and what we're doing is we're actually lining
- 00:02:34.090 --> 00:02:36.190
- these commandments up with the 10 Commandments,
- 00:02:36.190 --> 00:02:40.180
- the original 10 Commandments we're lining up
- 00:02:40.180 --> 00:02:43.000
- with the 10 Financial Commandments, okay?
- 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:45.150
- So here's number six, 'cause we've already
- 00:02:45.150 --> 00:02:47.290
- done the first five in another show,
- 00:02:47.290 --> 00:02:49.210
- here's the sixth financial commandment,
- 00:02:49.210 --> 00:02:52.190
- live on a budget.
- 00:02:52.190 --> 00:02:54.200
- Live on a budget.
- 00:02:56.120 --> 00:02:58.130
- Now this might shock you the one I'm lining up with
- 00:02:58.130 --> 00:03:01.030
- I'm lining up with the sixth commandment,
- 00:03:01.030 --> 00:03:03.170
- and it's Exodus 20 verse 13, "You shall not murder."
- 00:03:03.170 --> 00:03:08.010
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:03:08.010 --> 00:03:09.200
- Here's the reason I'm lining that up with
- 00:03:09.200 --> 00:03:11.200
- live on a budget.
- 00:03:11.200 --> 00:03:12.270
- Because if you're not living on a budget,
- 00:03:12.270 --> 00:03:15.110
- you're killing yourself.
- 00:03:15.110 --> 00:03:17.090
- That's what you're doing, or you're wanting
- 00:03:17.090 --> 00:03:19.190
- to kill yourself, one or the other.
- 00:03:19.190 --> 00:03:22.140
- You're thinking about murder somehow,
- 00:03:22.140 --> 00:03:25.080
- because you're not living on a budget.
- 00:03:25.080 --> 00:03:27.060
- A budget is a plan, it's a plan.
- 00:03:27.060 --> 00:03:30.190
- It's a goal.
- 00:03:30.190 --> 00:03:32.150
- If you don't have a goal in mind,
- 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:38.210
- you'll never reach it.
- 00:03:38.210 --> 00:03:39.240
- It's just that simple, or let me say it like this
- 00:03:41.070 --> 00:03:45.020
- if your goal is nothing, you probably will reach it.
- 00:03:45.020 --> 00:03:48.190
- So you have you have a goal, you have to have a plan.
- 00:03:48.190 --> 00:03:50.280
- I remember when I was in sixth or seventh grade
- 00:03:50.280 --> 00:03:53.270
- I think seventh grade,
- 00:03:53.270 --> 00:03:55.080
- I went out for the basketball team.
- 00:03:55.080 --> 00:03:57.110
- And I just knew that I was the best basketball player
- 00:03:57.110 --> 00:04:01.250
- out there, there was just no doubt in my mind about that.
- 00:04:01.250 --> 00:04:05.180
- And so we're running around practicing,
- 00:04:05.180 --> 00:04:09.120
- and I had already heard we were gone do some layups.
- 00:04:09.120 --> 00:04:12.220
- That's where you dribble the ball up to the basket,
- 00:04:12.220 --> 00:04:14.230
- and then you just try to throw it up there
- 00:04:14.230 --> 00:04:17.140
- and it's called a layup.
- 00:04:17.140 --> 00:04:19.030
- And so when we got lined up to do it,
- 00:04:19.030 --> 00:04:21.260
- I got first in line.
- 00:04:21.260 --> 00:04:24.000
- And the reason I got first in line was I thought
- 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:27.040
- what's going to happen when I do this
- 00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:29.200
- is the coach is going to say "Stop, I want everyone
- 00:04:29.200 --> 00:04:34.180
- "to look at what this young man just did.
- 00:04:35.230 --> 00:04:38.020
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:04:38.020 --> 00:04:39.190
- "This is the perfect example of what
- 00:04:39.190 --> 00:04:43.050
- "a layup should look like."
- 00:04:43.050 --> 00:04:44.200
- I've never even seen one,
- 00:04:47.060 --> 00:04:48.140
- this is the next Michael Jordan I'm sure now, so.
- 00:04:48.140 --> 00:04:50.120
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:04:50.120 --> 00:04:51.260
- So I took off, and before I even got to the goal
- 00:04:51.260 --> 00:04:56.020
- the coach said "Stop, stop right there."
- 00:04:57.080 --> 00:05:01.000
- He said "I want everyone to look at what he's doing."
- 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:05.050
- And I thought I haven't even shot yet
- 00:05:05.050 --> 00:05:07.260
- and I'm so good, you know?
- 00:05:07.260 --> 00:05:09.250
- He said "Where is he looking?"
- 00:05:09.250 --> 00:05:12.110
- And everyone said "He's looking at the ball."
- 00:05:14.210 --> 00:05:17.170
- And he said "That's right."
- 00:05:17.170 --> 00:05:19.080
- He said "But that's the goal."
- 00:05:19.080 --> 00:05:21.120
- And he said "When you play basketball,
- 00:05:23.000 --> 00:05:25.150
- "you never look at the ball.
- 00:05:25.150 --> 00:05:27.150
- "You always look at the goal."
- 00:05:27.150 --> 00:05:29.130
- And then he said to me "Go back to the end of the line
- 00:05:30.260 --> 00:05:33.140
- "and you try it next time."
- 00:05:33.140 --> 00:05:34.280
- It was a very encouraging moment.
- 00:05:36.210 --> 00:05:38.240
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:05:38.240 --> 00:05:40.210
- Took years of therapy to get over.
- 00:05:40.210 --> 00:05:43.190
- But the point is, most people with their finances
- 00:05:45.010 --> 00:05:49.170
- are just doing this.
- 00:05:49.170 --> 00:05:51.240
- Never even thinking about a goal down the road,
- 00:05:51.240 --> 00:05:55.110
- you see what I'm saying?
- 00:05:55.110 --> 00:05:56.140
- And so you have to have a goal.
- 00:05:56.140 --> 00:05:58.080
- When you're sick, you go to the doctor right?
- 00:05:58.080 --> 00:06:01.140
- Why not go to a financial doctor?
- 00:06:01.140 --> 00:06:03.150
- There are all these resources out there
- 00:06:03.150 --> 00:06:05.150
- and people never even ask for help,
- 00:06:05.150 --> 00:06:08.080
- and there are lots of good resources out there.
- 00:06:08.080 --> 00:06:10.140
- So let's talk again about this plan,
- 00:06:10.140 --> 00:06:13.060
- I said live on a budget.
- 00:06:13.060 --> 00:06:15.110
- A budget seems to be a bad word to most people.
- 00:06:15.110 --> 00:06:18.110
- They don't like that word, it is not a bad word.
- 00:06:19.230 --> 00:06:22.110
- And one of the reasons is because they think
- 00:06:22.110 --> 00:06:24.180
- "I don't even know how to do a budget."
- 00:06:24.180 --> 00:06:26.200
- That's why you go to someone who does know how,
- 00:06:26.200 --> 00:06:28.200
- you go to a coach.
- 00:06:28.200 --> 00:06:29.250
- But here's the reason we don't do it.
- 00:06:29.250 --> 00:06:32.020
- Remember the coach told the whole class
- 00:06:32.020 --> 00:06:35.030
- what I was doing wrong.
- 00:06:35.030 --> 00:06:37.080
- I think some people are afraid to go to a small group
- 00:06:37.080 --> 00:06:41.270
- where they talk about finances,
- 00:06:41.270 --> 00:06:43.200
- because I think they're afraid that the leader of the group
- 00:06:43.200 --> 00:06:47.030
- is gonna say okay everybody get your check books out
- 00:06:47.030 --> 00:06:50.060
- and pass them around.
- 00:06:51.150 --> 00:06:53.160
- And then they're gonna look at yours and they're gonna say
- 00:06:54.290 --> 00:06:56.250
- Oh my.
- 00:06:56.250 --> 00:06:57.200
- I want everybody to look at Joe's checkbook,
- 00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:01.020
- this is the worst checkbook I've ever seen.
- 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:04.240
- That's not what people do.
- 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:06.050
- That's not what financial coaches do.
- 00:07:06.050 --> 00:07:08.080
- So you need to ask for help.
- 00:07:08.080 --> 00:07:09.260
- Now let me give you a little tidbit about a budget.
- 00:07:09.260 --> 00:07:14.260
- A budget allows you to make non-emotional decisions
- 00:07:16.080 --> 00:07:20.050
- about your finances.
- 00:07:20.270 --> 00:07:22.190
- You can't imagine how much trouble we get into
- 00:07:22.190 --> 00:07:26.290
- because we make an emotional decision.
- 00:07:26.290 --> 00:07:29.150
- And with finances it's simply numbers, that's all it is
- 00:07:29.150 --> 00:07:34.130
- it's just numbers, do the numbers add up?
- 00:07:35.180 --> 00:07:36.250
- I've actually had people ask me before
- 00:07:36.250 --> 00:07:38.250
- do you think we should buy this house?
- 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:43.150
- I said there's no way I can tell you that
- 00:07:43.150 --> 00:07:45.090
- without looking at your budget.
- 00:07:45.090 --> 00:07:47.120
- Because it's just a numbers decision, that's all it is.
- 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:50.030
- That's what a budget does, it helps you do that.
- 00:07:50.030 --> 00:07:52.130
- So let me tell you about this
- 00:07:52.130 --> 00:07:54.170
- when I implemented this at our home years and years ago,
- 00:07:54.170 --> 00:07:57.120
- I came up with this little saying and I started saying,
- 00:07:57.120 --> 00:08:02.050
- I called him Mr. Budget, the budget.
- 00:08:03.230 --> 00:08:06.180
- And so when Debbie would ask me for something,
- 00:08:06.180 --> 00:08:10.090
- I would say well sugar I would love to buy that for you,
- 00:08:10.090 --> 00:08:14.210
- but let's see what Mr. Budget says.
- 00:08:16.160 --> 00:08:18.240
- Oh Mr. Budget say no, I'm so sorry.
- 00:08:20.170 --> 00:08:25.170
- Mr. Budget's mean isn't he? He's mean, yeah he's mean.
- 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:30.000
- And then, come give daddy a hug.
- 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:32.160
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:08:32.160 --> 00:08:34.140
- That worked fine, until I wanted some new golf clubs.
- 00:08:34.140 --> 00:08:37.090
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:08:37.090 --> 00:08:38.270
- And then she said to me "Oh Mr. Budget say no."
- 00:08:38.270 --> 00:08:42.160
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:08:42.160 --> 00:08:44.130
- All right so that's number six, here's number seven.
- 00:08:44.130 --> 00:08:47.050
- Live below your means.
- 00:08:47.050 --> 00:08:50.000
- Live below your means.
- 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:51.240
- This goes along with the seventh commandment,
- 00:08:51.240 --> 00:08:54.080
- Exodus 20 verse 14, listen,
- 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:56.100
- "You shall not commit adultery."
- 00:08:56.100 --> 00:08:58.080
- Now listen, a person who commits adultery
- 00:08:59.210 --> 00:09:03.250
- is living beyond the means that God has
- 00:09:03.250 --> 00:09:07.110
- provided for him or her.
- 00:09:07.110 --> 00:09:08.190
- And there are two reasons why we live beyond our means.
- 00:09:10.020 --> 00:09:14.060
- One I'm gonna talk about will apply even with adultery,
- 00:09:14.060 --> 00:09:16.180
- but they both apply to math and the finances.
- 00:09:16.180 --> 00:09:20.200
- But here's a reason, we're not content with what we have.
- 00:09:20.200 --> 00:09:24.180
- That's why a man commits adultery,
- 00:09:25.290 --> 00:09:27.230
- he's not content with what he has.
- 00:09:27.230 --> 00:09:30.010
- That's why Christians don't live within their means.
- 00:09:30.010 --> 00:09:33.170
- Now please hear me, this is very strong.
- 00:09:33.170 --> 00:09:36.010
- But when you do not live within your means,
- 00:09:36.010 --> 00:09:38.230
- you are actually shaking your fists in the face of God.
- 00:09:38.230 --> 00:09:43.230
- And you are saying to God,
- 00:09:44.190 --> 00:09:45.280
- I am not content with you, and I'm not content
- 00:09:45.280 --> 00:09:50.280
- with what you've provided for me.
- 00:09:51.260 --> 00:09:53.220
- I'm not content with your provision,
- 00:09:53.220 --> 00:09:55.170
- so I'm gonna find another way to go beyond your provision.
- 00:09:55.170 --> 00:09:59.180
- Live within your means, here's one thing Paul said.
- 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:03.050
- Philippians 4:11, "I have learned in whatever
- 00:10:03.050 --> 00:10:07.120
- "state I am to be content."
- 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:10.100
- Now he's talking about, he said sometimes
- 00:10:11.170 --> 00:10:13.290
- I've been abounding, I've had more than enough,
- 00:10:13.290 --> 00:10:17.110
- sometimes I've been abased,
- 00:10:17.110 --> 00:10:18.240
- which means I didn't have enough.
- 00:10:18.240 --> 00:10:20.290
- But I love this because he said "I've learned."
- 00:10:20.290 --> 00:10:24.150
- That means you can actually learn to be content,
- 00:10:25.260 --> 00:10:28.190
- and this is the Apostle that wrote a third
- 00:10:28.190 --> 00:10:30.210
- of the New Testament, and he needed to learn this principle.
- 00:10:30.210 --> 00:10:33.200
- "I have learned in whatever state I'm in to be content",
- 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:37.110
- you can learn to be content.
- 00:10:37.110 --> 00:10:39.290
- So two reasons people don't live within their means,
- 00:10:39.290 --> 00:10:42.240
- the first one's they're not content.
- 00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:44.280
- Here's the second one, let me read you the verse first.
- 00:10:44.280 --> 00:10:48.250
- Luke 14:28, "For which of you intending
- 00:10:48.250 --> 00:10:52.030
- "to build a tower, does not sit down first
- 00:10:52.030 --> 00:10:55.120
- "and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it."
- 00:10:55.120 --> 00:11:00.120
- K here's the second one, count.
- 00:11:00.120 --> 00:11:03.000
- People don't count.
- 00:11:04.260 --> 00:11:06.200
- So they don't live within their means.
- 00:11:06.200 --> 00:11:09.120
- Now I'm gonna use a word that to
- 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:12.290
- some of you is a bad word.
- 00:11:12.290 --> 00:11:16.290
- It's actually not a bad word, but to some of you
- 00:11:16.290 --> 00:11:20.090
- it's a bad word.
- 00:11:20.090 --> 00:11:21.090
- Some of you, it will bring up bad memories.
- 00:11:22.150 --> 00:11:25.230
- It's actually a good word.
- 00:11:25.230 --> 00:11:27.070
- Am I building up enough suspense?
- 00:11:28.060 --> 00:11:30.070
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:11:30.070 --> 00:11:31.220
- But some of you are going to hate, you're going to have
- 00:11:31.220 --> 00:11:34.030
- chills go up your spine when I use this word.
- 00:11:34.030 --> 00:11:38.110
- All right, everybody ready?
- 00:11:38.110 --> 00:11:39.270
- Math.
- 00:11:42.110 --> 00:11:44.110
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:11:44.110 --> 00:11:47.180
- Anyone have chills?
- 00:11:47.180 --> 00:11:48.210
- And did you tell your teacher "I'm never gonna need this
- 00:11:50.090 --> 00:11:53.080
- "when I grow up."
- 00:11:53.080 --> 00:11:54.100
- You do though, don't you?
- 00:11:55.180 --> 00:11:57.040
- Yeah, you do! You need math!
- 00:11:57.040 --> 00:11:59.280
- But some people are good at math, some are not good at math.
- 00:11:59.280 --> 00:12:03.090
- But that's why we have coaches.
- 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:05.020
- That's why we have people that can help us,
- 00:12:05.020 --> 00:12:06.160
- people that can give us instruction all right?
- 00:12:06.160 --> 00:12:08.230
- But we have found when we help people with their finances,
- 00:12:08.230 --> 00:12:12.180
- so many times, they're not bad people.
- 00:12:12.180 --> 00:12:16.150
- They just can't count! They just can't count!
- 00:12:16.150 --> 00:12:20.020
- I actually remember saying to this couple
- 00:12:20.020 --> 00:12:22.140
- you're not rebellious, you just can't count!
- 00:12:22.140 --> 00:12:24.230
- I said to 'em what is your monthly income?
- 00:12:26.100 --> 00:12:30.180
- What's your total monthly income?
- 00:12:30.180 --> 00:12:33.150
- They said 4.000 dollars a month.
- 00:12:33.150 --> 00:12:35.180
- I said okay, so in my mind I'm taking out the tithe
- 00:12:35.180 --> 00:12:39.050
- taking out the taxes, I can pretty much figure out
- 00:12:39.050 --> 00:12:41.110
- what that's gonna be.
- 00:12:41.110 --> 00:12:42.250
- Taking out savings, taking out things like this.
- 00:12:42.250 --> 00:12:45.050
- But I said okay, so that's how much you have coming in?
- 00:12:45.050 --> 00:12:47.250
- So I said you don't have to tell me how much
- 00:12:47.250 --> 00:12:50.070
- your house payment is, or your car payment
- 00:12:50.070 --> 00:12:52.110
- or any of that, or if you have two car payments,
- 00:12:52.110 --> 00:12:55.070
- I just need numbers.
- 00:12:55.070 --> 00:12:56.110
- You got $4.000 a month coming in,
- 00:12:56.110 --> 00:12:59.080
- tell me, give me some numbers,
- 00:12:59.080 --> 00:13:01.250
- that you know you have bills that are gonna
- 00:13:01.250 --> 00:13:03.250
- come every month.
- 00:13:03.250 --> 00:13:05.050
- So they said well 1.200 dollars a month,
- 00:13:05.050 --> 00:13:09.090
- 400 dollars a month, 600 dollars a month,
- 00:13:09.090 --> 00:13:13.260
- 400, 400, 300, 300,
- 00:13:13.260 --> 00:13:17.050
- 200, 200, 400, 400,
- 00:13:17.050 --> 00:13:19.040
- 300, 200, 400, 400, and 400.
- 00:13:19.040 --> 00:13:22.020
- (crowd laughs)
- 00:13:23.040 --> 00:13:25.240
- I said do you realize that you passed $4.000 dollars
- 00:13:25.240 --> 00:13:29.110
- a long time ago?
- 00:13:29.110 --> 00:13:30.170
- But they didn't.
- 00:13:32.030 --> 00:13:32.270
- Again, no budget.
- 00:13:34.120 --> 00:13:36.130
- No way to know if you have this much coming in,
- 00:13:37.250 --> 00:13:40.140
- no way.
- 00:13:40.140 --> 00:13:41.290
- And one thing that you could easily start a budget is this,
- 00:13:41.290 --> 00:13:46.220
- and when we talk about living below our means too.
- 00:13:48.170 --> 00:13:51.090
- 10 percent tithe, and 10 percent savings.
- 00:13:51.090 --> 00:13:54.150
- That's just a simple way to start a budget.
- 00:13:54.150 --> 00:13:57.060
- You never ever budget to spend everything you make.
- 00:13:57.060 --> 00:14:02.080
- Because you gotta have a contingency fund.
- 00:14:03.130 --> 00:14:04.260
- You've gotta be able to do this.
- 00:14:04.260 --> 00:14:06.030
- So we need to live below our means,
- 00:14:06.030 --> 00:14:08.250
- we need to be able to count and do our math,
- 00:14:08.250 --> 00:14:11.170
- we need to be able to have a budget.
- 00:14:11.170 --> 00:14:13.260
- Here's number eight, don't buy now and pay later.
- 00:14:13.260 --> 00:14:17.290
- The world tells us this, don't buy now and pay later.
- 00:14:20.230 --> 00:14:24.160
- This goes along with Exodus 20:15,
- 00:14:24.160 --> 00:14:27.210
- "You shall not steal."
- 00:14:27.210 --> 00:14:29.050
- And you might think well who am I stealing from
- 00:14:31.140 --> 00:14:33.090
- if I pay it off? You're stealing from yourself.
- 00:14:33.090 --> 00:14:35.250
- Because you don't have the funds to do what
- 00:14:38.150 --> 00:14:41.100
- you would like to do anymore,
- 00:14:41.100 --> 00:14:43.040
- your funds are already committed.
- 00:14:43.040 --> 00:14:45.040
- Sometimes there are people that I know who have
- 00:14:45.040 --> 00:14:47.100
- 80 percent of their funds already committed.
- 00:14:47.100 --> 00:14:49.190
- They're just committed.
- 00:14:50.210 --> 00:14:52.030
- Committed to their house payment,
- 00:14:52.030 --> 00:14:53.090
- committed to the car payment,
- 00:14:53.090 --> 00:14:55.000
- it's committed to boat payment.
- 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:56.210
- It's committed to this, committed to this,
- 00:14:56.210 --> 00:14:58.060
- they have no free money at all, nothing free.
- 00:14:58.060 --> 00:15:01.090
- "You shall not steal."
- 00:15:01.090 --> 00:15:03.050
- This is stealing.
- 00:15:03.050 --> 00:15:04.130
- Now let me tell you why behind every commandment
- 00:15:04.130 --> 00:15:08.110
- is a principle,
- 00:15:08.110 --> 00:15:09.270
- and there's a principle about debt in the Bible okay?
- 00:15:09.270 --> 00:15:13.170
- So please hear me with this all right,
- 00:15:13.170 --> 00:15:15.120
- this is very important.
- 00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:16.220
- God wired you to have hope.
- 00:15:17.250 --> 00:15:21.220
- He wired you to have hope.
- 00:15:23.050 --> 00:15:24.250
- Romans 8:24 says
- 00:15:25.250 --> 00:15:27.090
- "For we were saved in hope.
- 00:15:27.090 --> 00:15:30.100
- "But hope that is seen is not hope."
- 00:15:30.100 --> 00:15:34.230
- Now listen hope that is seen, or realized, is not hope.
- 00:15:34.230 --> 00:15:39.110
- For why does one steal hope for what he sees?
- 00:15:39.110 --> 00:15:44.110
- Or what he already has,
- 00:15:45.030 --> 00:15:46.180
- why would you still hope for it if you already have it?
- 00:15:46.180 --> 00:15:48.160
- So in other words, if you're hoping to be able to
- 00:15:48.160 --> 00:15:53.090
- get some outdoor furniture,
- 00:15:53.090 --> 00:15:55.180
- and you just go put it on the credit card,
- 00:15:56.230 --> 00:15:59.210
- you don't hope for it anymore.
- 00:15:59.210 --> 00:16:01.050
- Why would you hope for something you can see?
- 00:16:01.050 --> 00:16:03.170
- You can see it, it's in your backyard.
- 00:16:03.170 --> 00:16:05.010
- But every time you look in your backyard and it's not there,
- 00:16:05.010 --> 00:16:07.030
- you're hoping for it.
- 00:16:07.030 --> 00:16:08.190
- And you're planning for it, and you're preparing for it.
- 00:16:08.190 --> 00:16:11.010
- And you're saving for it.
- 00:16:11.010 --> 00:16:13.200
- And what's happening is hope is building up in your life,
- 00:16:13.200 --> 00:16:17.080
- and this is something God planned.
- 00:16:17.080 --> 00:16:18.250
- It's called delayed gratification.
- 00:16:18.250 --> 00:16:21.120
- And God wired emotions for delayed gratification.
- 00:16:22.240 --> 00:16:27.110
- So that when you get it after six months of saving,
- 00:16:27.110 --> 00:16:31.040
- every time you pass by now you look out there,
- 00:16:31.040 --> 00:16:35.030
- and you think "Thank you Lord! That looks so nice,
- 00:16:35.030 --> 00:16:38.230
- "that makes our backyard look so nice, and it's so nice
- 00:16:38.230 --> 00:16:41.090
- "to sit out there and watch the sunset."
- 00:16:41.090 --> 00:16:43.150
- But if you go down and buy it and you didn't have the money,
- 00:16:43.150 --> 00:16:46.260
- and now you got payments,
- 00:16:46.260 --> 00:16:48.020
- and it's another payment on top of a payment,
- 00:16:48.020 --> 00:16:50.050
- now every time you walk by it, you have stress.
- 00:16:50.050 --> 00:16:52.250
- Are y'all following me?
- 00:16:55.150 --> 00:16:57.020
- These commandments, these financial commandments,
- 00:16:57.020 --> 00:17:00.110
- these things I'm talking about
- 00:17:00.110 --> 00:17:02.050
- relate to more than just budgeting your money.
- 00:17:02.050 --> 00:17:05.240
- It relates to your emotional health.
- 00:17:05.240 --> 00:17:08.150
- And God wired you to have that delayed gratification.
- 00:17:08.150 --> 00:17:11.220
- By the way one of the signs of clinical depression
- 00:17:11.220 --> 00:17:16.220
- By the way one of the signs of clinical depression
- 00:17:16.220 --> 00:17:18.280
- is a lack of hope.
- 00:17:18.280 --> 00:17:20.190
- Would you also like to know two other statistics?
- 00:17:22.230 --> 00:17:27.090
- America is the most in debt culture in the world,
- 00:17:27.090 --> 00:17:32.060
- America is the most in debt culture in the world,
- 00:17:32.060 --> 00:17:33.230
- and the most depressed culture of the world.
- 00:17:33.230 --> 00:17:38.180
- More diagnosed depression, and more debt.
- 00:17:38.180 --> 00:17:43.100
- More diagnosed depression, and more debt.
- 00:17:43.100 --> 00:17:45.270
- So please hear me, when God tells us things
- 00:17:45.270 --> 00:17:49.060
- it's not for His good, it's for our good.
- 00:17:49.060 --> 00:17:52.110
- Just a few weeks ago I did Dave Ramsey's show,
- 00:17:54.200 --> 00:17:57.020
- and Dave and I are good friends and we love each other.
- 00:17:57.020 --> 00:17:59.290
- And so we were talking about Beyond Blessed
- 00:17:59.290 --> 00:18:02.240
- and things like this,
- 00:18:02.240 --> 00:18:04.190
- and we were talking about delayed gratification.
- 00:18:04.190 --> 00:18:06.230
- And there's something that happened
- 00:18:06.230 --> 00:18:09.100
- and he told me the start of it, how it started.
- 00:18:09.100 --> 00:18:11.280
- This guy called in and when he answered the phone,
- 00:18:11.280 --> 00:18:16.080
- this guy started shouting "I'm debt free! I'm debt free!"
- 00:18:16.080 --> 00:18:21.080
- this guy started shouting "I'm debt free! I'm debt free!"
- 00:18:22.200 --> 00:18:23.280
- And Dave was like man that's great,
- 00:18:23.280 --> 00:18:25.120
- and he just kept shouting "I'm debt free, I'm debt free!"
- 00:18:25.120 --> 00:18:29.260
- Now I don't know if you ever listened to Dave Ramsey,
- 00:18:29.260 --> 00:18:31.230
- but that's become something now that when people call
- 00:18:31.230 --> 00:18:34.280
- and when they get debt free,
- 00:18:34.280 --> 00:18:36.240
- it's the debt free shout they call it.
- 00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:38.210
- Here's what it is, it's delayed gratification.
- 00:18:40.020 --> 00:18:43.160
- It's joy.
- 00:18:44.140 --> 00:18:46.060
- God wired you to have joy, but buy now pay later
- 00:18:46.060 --> 00:18:50.110
- takes it all away.
- 00:18:50.110 --> 00:18:52.000
- You will never have that joy.
- 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:53.270
- Here's number nine, be a good witness.
- 00:18:53.270 --> 00:18:56.130
- We were talking about with your finances,
- 00:18:57.240 --> 00:18:59.080
- be a good witness.
- 00:18:59.080 --> 00:19:00.150
- This goes with Exodus 20:16,
- 00:19:00.150 --> 00:19:02.190
- "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."
- 00:19:02.190 --> 00:19:05.240
- "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."
- 00:19:05.240 --> 00:19:08.120
- Now in the commandment we say you shall not lie
- 00:19:08.120 --> 00:19:11.270
- and that's true, totally true.
- 00:19:11.270 --> 00:19:13.110
- But if you're bearing a false witness to your neighbor,
- 00:19:15.160 --> 00:19:19.040
- could you be doing that financially?
- 00:19:20.260 --> 00:19:24.060
- In other words, you're sitting there talking to
- 00:19:25.120 --> 00:19:27.230
- your neighbor about the Lord
- 00:19:27.230 --> 00:19:29.150
- and he's looking over your shoulder at a new car,
- 00:19:30.270 --> 00:19:35.050
- but a yard that looks horrible with unpainted shutters
- 00:19:36.160 --> 00:19:41.130
- and it's the worst house on the block.
- 00:19:41.130 --> 00:19:43.100
- I wonder if the way we handle our finances
- 00:19:45.250 --> 00:19:50.040
- is a bad witness about the Lord.
- 00:19:50.040 --> 00:19:52.080
- I think it is.
- 00:19:54.030 --> 00:19:55.170
- I think what we ought to be doing
- 00:19:55.170 --> 00:19:56.260
- is helping people understand,
- 00:19:56.260 --> 00:19:58.290
- when you get your life lined up with the Lord
- 00:19:58.290 --> 00:20:00.270
- He can help your finances as well.
- 00:20:00.270 --> 00:20:03.280
- So that's the ninth one, be a good steward.
- 00:20:03.280 --> 00:20:08.040
- And here's the tenth one, be content.
- 00:20:08.040 --> 00:20:10.140
- Be content.
- 00:20:12.020 --> 00:20:13.000
- We talked a little bit about contentment,
- 00:20:14.050 --> 00:20:15.210
- but I need to go into it a little bit more.
- 00:20:15.210 --> 00:20:18.020
- Exodus 20:17 the 10th commandment,
- 00:20:18.020 --> 00:20:20.290
- "You shall not covet your neighbor's house,"
- 00:20:20.290 --> 00:20:23.240
- and it goes on to say or anything that is your neighbor's.
- 00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:26.200
- Why am I saying be content?
- 00:20:27.290 --> 00:20:30.030
- Because if you're coveting what someone else has,
- 00:20:30.030 --> 00:20:33.000
- you're not content with what you have.
- 00:20:33.000 --> 00:20:35.110
- As a matter of fact, it actually
- 00:20:35.110 --> 00:20:37.100
- makes you more discontented.
- 00:20:37.100 --> 00:20:41.080
- You become more discontented with your car
- 00:20:42.170 --> 00:20:46.110
- that blows a puff of smoke every time you start it up.
- 00:20:46.110 --> 00:20:50.130
- When your neighbor starts up his nice new one.
- 00:20:50.130 --> 00:20:53.200
- You become more discontent because you're
- 00:20:53.200 --> 00:20:56.000
- looking at his car.
- 00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:57.080
- But let's go on, let's think about some other things.
- 00:20:58.200 --> 00:21:01.140
- When you covet what someone else has,
- 00:21:02.190 --> 00:21:05.040
- that person becomes God to you.
- 00:21:06.050 --> 00:21:08.260
- And that person's material possessions become idols.
- 00:21:10.230 --> 00:21:15.210
- And that person's material possessions become idols.
- 00:21:15.210 --> 00:21:16.270
- And here's the reason I say that person becomes God.
- 00:21:19.220 --> 00:21:22.250
- Because what he buys, now you have to buy.
- 00:21:22.250 --> 00:21:25.170
- What he has, you have to do.
- 00:21:27.150 --> 00:21:29.070
- He becomes your God.
- 00:21:30.180 --> 00:21:31.190
- And what he has becomes an idol to you,
- 00:21:32.240 --> 00:21:36.080
- because you're coveting it.
- 00:21:36.080 --> 00:21:38.170
- By the way I say an idol, let me read you the scripture.
- 00:21:38.170 --> 00:21:42.090
- Colossians 3:5,
- 00:21:42.090 --> 00:21:43.270
- "Therefore put to death your members
- 00:21:43.270 --> 00:21:45.140
- "which are on the earth, fornication, uncleanness,
- 00:21:45.140 --> 00:21:48.150
- "passion, evil desire," now listen closely,
- 00:21:48.150 --> 00:21:51.200
- "and covetousness, which is idolatry.
- 00:21:51.200 --> 00:21:56.180
- "Covetousness, which is idolatry."
- 00:21:56.180 --> 00:21:59.160
- That's Colossians.
- 00:21:59.160 --> 00:22:01.040
- So when we covet, we made an idol of something.
- 00:22:01.040 --> 00:22:05.040
- And we've been talking about living Beyond Blessed,
- 00:22:05.040 --> 00:22:08.190
- God blessing us for the purpose of being a blessing.
- 00:22:08.190 --> 00:22:12.160
- So for years and years Debbie and I were on the cash system,
- 00:22:12.160 --> 00:22:16.140
- we didn't have credit cards we didn't use 'em
- 00:22:16.140 --> 00:22:19.170
- because we wanted to make sure we could account for
- 00:22:19.170 --> 00:22:23.020
- everything that we had.
- 00:22:23.020 --> 00:22:24.170
- We now use credit cards, but we obviously pay 'em off
- 00:22:24.170 --> 00:22:27.140
- at the end of every month.
- 00:22:27.140 --> 00:22:28.200
- We have savings in the bank
- 00:22:28.200 --> 00:22:30.140
- we're in a good place financially,
- 00:22:30.140 --> 00:22:32.040
- not because we make more, but because we manage well
- 00:22:32.040 --> 00:22:36.030
- what God gives us.
- 00:22:36.030 --> 00:22:37.090
- That's the main thing.
- 00:22:37.090 --> 00:22:38.250
- Because some people say well maybe you've made some more
- 00:22:38.250 --> 00:22:42.000
- money now because you sold some books or something.
- 00:22:42.000 --> 00:22:44.180
- I know people that make a lot of money
- 00:22:44.180 --> 00:22:47.030
- that are still messed up financially.
- 00:22:47.030 --> 00:22:49.000
- So it's not whether you make a little or a lot,
- 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:51.020
- it's how you manage what you have.
- 00:22:51.020 --> 00:22:52.130
- But for years we were all cash, okay?
- 00:22:52.130 --> 00:22:56.220
- And so when we would go on vacation I took cash,
- 00:22:56.220 --> 00:23:00.110
- I took a bunch of cash.
- 00:23:00.110 --> 00:23:02.010
- So we went on vacation, we were gonna use the credit card
- 00:23:02.010 --> 00:23:06.090
- 'cause we had the money in the bank and in the budget
- 00:23:06.090 --> 00:23:08.180
- to cover.
- 00:23:08.180 --> 00:23:09.240
- But I just without even thinking,
- 00:23:09.240 --> 00:23:11.250
- went to the bank and got a thousand dollars in cash
- 00:23:11.250 --> 00:23:14.170
- which would be normally what I would take on vacation.
- 00:23:14.170 --> 00:23:17.080
- So I had 10- $100 dollar bills.
- 00:23:17.080 --> 00:23:19.100
- That morning I'm having my quiet time,
- 00:23:19.100 --> 00:23:21.040
- and I just was thinking about I had jeans on,
- 00:23:21.040 --> 00:23:25.250
- about how big my wallet was.
- 00:23:25.250 --> 00:23:28.210
- And it dawned on me I had this roll of money,
- 00:23:28.210 --> 00:23:31.090
- this thousand dollars of cash in my pocket.
- 00:23:31.090 --> 00:23:34.240
- And I'm talking to the Lord.
- 00:23:34.240 --> 00:23:36.260
- And I kinda had a little laugh with the Lord.
- 00:23:36.260 --> 00:23:39.190
- I said Lord here I am, thank you for bringing me
- 00:23:39.190 --> 00:23:41.280
- to the place that I don't have to carry this much
- 00:23:41.280 --> 00:23:44.130
- cash with me anymore,
- 00:23:44.130 --> 00:23:45.260
- 'cause I've got the money in the bank,
- 00:23:45.260 --> 00:23:47.050
- I've got the money in the budget.
- 00:23:47.050 --> 00:23:48.240
- But it is kinda funny, my old habits die hard.
- 00:23:48.240 --> 00:23:51.200
- I got a $1000 cash.
- 00:23:51.200 --> 00:23:53.070
- And the Lord and I laugh about it.
- 00:23:53.070 --> 00:23:55.150
- That day, Debbie and I go to lunch.
- 00:23:55.150 --> 00:23:57.130
- This family walks in, two parents, four kids.
- 00:23:58.180 --> 00:24:02.030
- A family of six.
- 00:24:02.030 --> 00:24:04.060
- They start looking over the menu
- 00:24:04.060 --> 00:24:07.060
- and they start adding up what things cost,
- 00:24:07.060 --> 00:24:10.140
- and they talk about sharing meals.
- 00:24:10.140 --> 00:24:12.100
- We were talking about being good stewards.
- 00:24:13.150 --> 00:24:15.110
- And I thought they're believers,
- 00:24:15.110 --> 00:24:17.160
- and they're trying to be good stewards.
- 00:24:17.160 --> 00:24:19.160
- And pretty soon when the meal came they held hands,
- 00:24:19.160 --> 00:24:22.200
- and they prayed.
- 00:24:22.200 --> 00:24:23.250
- And all of a sudden it was like I thought to myself,
- 00:24:26.200 --> 00:24:29.200
- I know why I have all this cash with me.
- 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:33.060
- And it was like the Lord said "I do too.
- 00:24:35.040 --> 00:24:38.050
- "I planned it this way, actually."
- 00:24:39.100 --> 00:24:41.080
- And then Debbie knows that sometimes I give
- 00:24:42.160 --> 00:24:44.130
- $100 dollar bills away when the Lord tells me
- 00:24:44.130 --> 00:24:47.120
- and she said "Do you have a $100 dollar bill?"
- 00:24:47.120 --> 00:24:50.100
- 'Cause she looked over and saw too.
- 00:24:50.100 --> 00:24:52.060
- I said I got 10 of 'em.
- 00:24:52.060 --> 00:24:53.110
- So we went over and we told them we wanna give you this
- 00:24:54.250 --> 00:24:58.020
- because you're being good stewards.
- 00:24:58.020 --> 00:25:00.190
- And the guy told me, "This'll pay for our whole vacation."
- 00:25:00.190 --> 00:25:04.020
- And I remember saying to these four kids
- 00:25:04.020 --> 00:25:06.130
- don't ever forget the day that a stranger
- 00:25:06.130 --> 00:25:10.260
- paid for your meal,
- 00:25:11.220 --> 00:25:13.010
- because you asked God to bless your meal,
- 00:25:14.060 --> 00:25:17.120
- and you were being good stewards of what God's given you.
- 00:25:17.120 --> 00:25:20.040
- My prayer for every one of you
- 00:25:21.050 --> 00:25:23.100
- is that you will be a good steward of what God gives you.
- 00:25:24.220 --> 00:25:27.280
- So that you can give generously when God prompts you.
- 00:25:27.280 --> 00:25:31.090
- Let's pray.
- 00:25:32.100 --> 00:25:33.150
- Lord I pray for every person watching.
- 00:25:33.150 --> 00:25:36.150
- I pray God that you would take these principles,
- 00:25:36.150 --> 00:25:40.090
- and secure them in our hearts.
- 00:25:40.090 --> 00:25:43.120
- I pray Lord for people who are watching
- 00:25:43.120 --> 00:25:45.120
- who are under financial stress,
- 00:25:45.120 --> 00:25:47.210
- and have lived that way for years.
- 00:25:47.210 --> 00:25:50.080
- I pray God that the truths of these messages
- 00:25:50.080 --> 00:25:53.190
- will break that financial stress and bondage today,
- 00:25:53.190 --> 00:25:58.110
- it will be broken today.
- 00:25:58.110 --> 00:26:00.140
- And I pray Lord that every person watching
- 00:26:00.140 --> 00:26:03.140
- will be able to be a great steward of the funds you give us,
- 00:26:03.140 --> 00:26:07.180
- and that we will be able to be generous givers
- 00:26:07.180 --> 00:26:11.120
- when you prompt us, in Jesus' name, Amen.
- 00:26:11.120 --> 00:26:15.280
- (crowd applauds)
- 00:26:15.280 --> 00:26:16.260
- Thank you so much for watching,
- 00:26:16.260 --> 00:26:18.000
- and may God continue to bless you
- 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:20.160
- so you can be a blessing.
- 00:26:20.160 --> 00:26:22.180
