  • male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
  • 00:00:02.110 --> 00:00:03.230
  • by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry.
  • 00:00:03.240 --> 00:00:07.220
  • 00:00:07.230 --> 00:00:13.160
  • Doug Batchelor: If you want your children to grow up and be
  • 00:00:13.170 --> 00:00:16.100
  • honorable and serve God, you must be honorable and have
  • 00:00:16.110 --> 00:00:19.130
  • family worship.
  • 00:00:19.140 --> 00:00:21.060
  • The whole idea of honoring your father and mother is learned
  • 00:00:21.070 --> 00:00:23.280
  • through the Word of God, and it's implying that you're
  • 00:00:23.290 --> 00:00:26.110
  • teaching the Word of God in your family.
  • 00:00:26.120 --> 00:00:28.280

  • Doug: We're in the midst of a series, actually first time
  • 00:00:33.020 --> 00:00:35.130
  • since I've been here, that is dedicated solely to
  • 00:00:35.140 --> 00:00:38.130
  • the Ten Commandments.
  • 00:00:38.140 --> 00:00:40.040
  • And so today, we're actually on the sixth presentation, but it's
  • 00:00:40.050 --> 00:00:43.210
  • commandment number five.
  • 00:00:43.220 --> 00:00:45.270
  • And we've just transferred from the first table of stones over
  • 00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:50.000
  • to the second table of stones.
  • 00:00:50.010 --> 00:00:52.100
  • The message title is dealing with honor in the family, Honor
  • 00:00:52.110 --> 00:00:56.190
  • Within the Family.
  • 00:00:56.200 --> 00:00:58.110
  • Now, in the Ten Commandments, you've got--you know, I was
  • 00:00:58.120 --> 00:01:03.240
  • gonna say something really silly, like the Lord is
  • 00:01:03.250 --> 00:01:05.190
  • brilliant, but it's sort of obvious, isn't it?
  • 00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:08.120
  • But it is brilliant the way that God designed the Ten
  • 00:01:08.130 --> 00:01:11.070
  • Commandments.
  • 00:01:11.080 --> 00:01:12.240
  • On the first table, you've got the relationship between man and
  • 00:01:12.250 --> 00:01:16.260
  • God.
  • 00:01:16.270 --> 00:01:18.040
  • It's the vertical relationship.
  • 00:01:18.050 --> 00:01:21.290
  • The first commandment, if you get the first commandment right,
  • 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:25.160
  • "Thou shall not have any other Lord's before me," you will get
  • 00:01:25.170 --> 00:01:28.290
  • all the other commandments on this table right because if God
  • 00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:33.270
  • is first in your life, then you'll obey the way that you
  • 00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:37.150
  • worship him, the day that you worship him, the time, the
  • 00:01:37.160 --> 00:01:40.160
  • method, his name, that'll all be revered if you worship him
  • 00:01:40.170 --> 00:01:45.100
  • supremely.
  • 00:01:45.110 --> 00:01:46.140
  • Now, when you go to the second table, what is the first
  • 00:01:46.150 --> 00:01:49.220
  • commandment there?
  • 00:01:49.230 --> 00:01:51.210
  • "Honor your father and mother."
  • 00:01:51.220 --> 00:01:52.260
  • Now we're dealing with the horizontal relationships in the
  • 00:01:52.270 --> 00:01:56.040
  • remaining six commandments here.
  • 00:01:56.050 --> 00:01:58.190
  • If you get this one, right, if there--if things are right in
  • 00:01:58.200 --> 00:02:03.110
  • the family, all the other commandments would be right.
  • 00:02:03.120 --> 00:02:08.160
  • If you've got good parents and they're teaching their children
  • 00:02:08.170 --> 00:02:11.210
  • good truth, you're not gonna find in society that there are
  • 00:02:11.220 --> 00:02:14.270
  • problems with the lying, and adultery, and the coveting, and
  • 00:02:14.280 --> 00:02:18.040
  • the killing, and all these other things.
  • 00:02:18.050 --> 00:02:19.290
  • It's when you don't get the first one right that you have
  • 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:22.250
  • problem with all the rest.
  • 00:02:22.260 --> 00:02:25.100
  • This commandment, probably more than any other, is the
  • 00:02:25.110 --> 00:02:28.130
  • foundation to the health and success of any culture because
  • 00:02:28.140 --> 00:02:33.210
  • the family is the most basic unit of a society.
  • 00:02:33.220 --> 00:02:39.100
  • And what we're talking about is not just children obeying
  • 00:02:39.110 --> 00:02:43.120
  • parents, we're talking about parents living in an honorable
  • 00:02:43.130 --> 00:02:48.020
  • way.
  • 00:02:48.030 --> 00:02:49.070
  • And it's the relationship between the parents, it's a
  • 00:02:49.080 --> 00:02:52.200
  • relationship of the children and the parents, and the parents and
  • 00:02:52.210 --> 00:02:57.010
  • the children.
  • 00:02:57.020 --> 00:02:58.090
  • It's really talking about honor within the family, reverence and
  • 00:02:58.100 --> 00:03:01.000
  • respect.
  • 00:03:01.010 --> 00:03:02.100
  • And so, that's our message today.
  • 00:03:02.110 --> 00:03:04.250
  • It's based upon this commandment.
  • 00:03:04.260 --> 00:03:06.050
  • You can find it in your Bible, of course, in Exodus 20, verse
  • 00:03:06.060 --> 00:03:09.250
  • 12, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be
  • 00:03:09.260 --> 00:03:15.160
  • long upon the land, which the Lord your God is giving you."
  • 00:03:15.170 --> 00:03:20.240
  • You know, in every culture, for there to be a strong society,
  • 00:03:20.250 --> 00:03:26.000
  • one of the first things they need to do is they need to
  • 00:03:26.010 --> 00:03:28.010
  • understand that the authority for the children is not the
  • 00:03:28.020 --> 00:03:34.220
  • state, it's the parents.
  • 00:03:34.230 --> 00:03:38.180
  • This idea that it takes a village and that we all raise
  • 00:03:38.190 --> 00:03:41.130
  • each other's children, it sounds really nice but no.
  • 00:03:41.140 --> 00:03:45.030
  • In order for a culture to be healthy, we need to understand
  • 00:03:45.040 --> 00:03:49.160
  • that a family unit, the responsibility of those
  • 00:03:49.170 --> 00:03:53.130
  • children, belongs, first and foremost, to those who brought
  • 00:03:53.140 --> 00:03:58.090
  • them into the world, I'm talking about biologically.
  • 00:03:58.100 --> 00:04:01.270
  • They are made in the image of their parents, just as we are in
  • 00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:05.080
  • the image of God, that responsibility rests with the
  • 00:04:05.090 --> 00:04:08.080
  • parents.
  • 00:04:08.090 --> 00:04:09.210
  • That must be respected by the state, by the government.
  • 00:04:09.220 --> 00:04:14.220
  • And to some extent, you know, when children are minors,
  • 00:04:14.230 --> 00:04:17.220
  • they're under the authority under of their parents, there
  • 00:04:17.230 --> 00:04:20.040
  • still is an element of that respect.
  • 00:04:20.050 --> 00:04:22.050
  • But more and more, we're finding that the government's acting
  • 00:04:22.060 --> 00:04:25.080
  • like we're the ones who are gonna tell you how to raise your
  • 00:04:25.090 --> 00:04:28.180
  • children, instead of the parents having that decision.
  • 00:04:28.190 --> 00:04:32.210
  • Something else, I don't know if you caught it, it said, "Honor
  • 00:04:32.220 --> 00:04:36.240
  • your father and your mother."
  • 00:04:36.250 --> 00:04:38.140
  • There is an implied truth there that a family, according to
  • 00:04:38.150 --> 00:04:43.020
  • God's design, is not a father and a father, or a mother and a
  • 00:04:43.030 --> 00:04:47.200
  • mother, but it is a father and a mother.
  • 00:04:47.210 --> 00:04:51.080
  • That's God's plan.
  • 00:04:51.090 --> 00:04:53.220
  • And in the same way on the first table of stones, God is saying,
  • 00:04:53.230 --> 00:04:57.010
  • "Look, I'm the one who saved you, I made you.
  • 00:04:57.020 --> 00:04:59.280
  • And so, I want you to worship me."
  • 00:04:59.290 --> 00:05:02.170
  • At the foundation of our relationships with each other,
  • 00:05:02.180 --> 00:05:05.060
  • it begins with honoring your parents
  • 00:05:05.070 --> 00:05:08.060
  • because parents are a child's first concept of God.
  • 00:05:08.070 --> 00:05:15.010
  • They really represent God to the children.
  • 00:05:15.020 --> 00:05:18.120
  • You think about it, God is the one who created us,
  • 00:05:18.130 --> 00:05:23.200
  • he sustains us.
  • 00:05:23.210 --> 00:05:24.280
  • He cares for us, he provides us, he forgives us, he cleanses us.
  • 00:05:24.290 --> 00:05:28.220
  • And for a child, who is God to that child as they're growing
  • 00:05:28.230 --> 00:05:31.250
  • up?
  • 00:05:31.260 --> 00:05:32.270
  • I need to issue a disclaimer here.
  • 00:05:32.280 --> 00:05:35.070
  • I realized, as I talk about this subject, that, you know, we live
  • 00:05:35.080 --> 00:05:38.080
  • with all kinds of strange circumstances.
  • 00:05:38.090 --> 00:05:40.170
  • And some of you maybe have been adopted.
  • 00:05:40.180 --> 00:05:42.280
  • This is an uncomfortable subject.
  • 00:05:42.290 --> 00:05:44.100
  • Some of you maybe grew up in a home with just a single parent.
  • 00:05:44.110 --> 00:05:48.000
  • Some of you maybe you are test two babies, and you're raised by
  • 00:05:48.010 --> 00:05:51.070
  • some corporation.
  • 00:05:51.080 --> 00:05:52.150
  • I don't know, we're all kinds of different people out there, and
  • 00:05:52.160 --> 00:05:54.270
  • there's exceptions.
  • 00:05:54.280 --> 00:05:56.030
  • So, what we're talking about here is the ideal, does everyone
  • 00:05:56.040 --> 00:05:59.070
  • appreciate that?
  • 00:05:59.080 --> 00:06:00.140
  • This is the ideal, and I know all of us have different
  • 00:06:00.150 --> 00:06:03.080
  • deviations of that ideal in our families.
  • 00:06:03.090 --> 00:06:06.270
  • And some of us, we were raised by our mother and our
  • 00:06:06.280 --> 00:06:10.270
  • stepfather, or whatever.
  • 00:06:10.280 --> 00:06:13.150
  • But so we're talking about the idea, and I understand that I
  • 00:06:13.160 --> 00:06:16.000
  • just want you to wink at the areas where you realize it
  • 00:06:16.010 --> 00:06:18.170
  • doesn't perfectly fit your situation.
  • 00:06:18.180 --> 00:06:21.070
  • But for the normal child, their first concept of God is the
  • 00:06:21.080 --> 00:06:26.060
  • parents.
  • 00:06:26.070 --> 00:06:27.250
  • Matter of fact, it's interesting the evolution that children go
  • 00:06:27.260 --> 00:06:31.140
  • through.
  • 00:06:31.150 --> 00:06:33.070
  • When they're real little, the parents can do everything.
  • 00:06:33.080 --> 00:06:38.240
  • They look at their parents in wide-eyed wonder and they think
  • 00:06:38.250 --> 00:06:40.190
  • they're God.
  • 00:06:40.200 --> 00:06:41.250
  • They fear them, they respect them, they love them, they look
  • 00:06:41.260 --> 00:06:44.190
  • to them, they don't want to be away from them.
  • 00:06:44.200 --> 00:06:46.290
  • They get a little older, you know, and the kid'll say, "My
  • 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:49.000
  • dad's the strongest dad in the world."
  • 00:06:49.010 --> 00:06:50.220
  • And then they get a little older, they get to be about 12
  • 00:06:50.230 --> 00:06:52.130
  • and they say, "Well, they know almost everything."
  • 00:06:52.140 --> 00:06:55.280
  • And then they get to be about 14, they say, "They don't know
  • 00:06:55.290 --> 00:06:58.130
  • very much."
  • 00:06:58.140 --> 00:07:01.060
  • And then they graduate high school and start college and
  • 00:07:01.070 --> 00:07:03.080
  • they think, "They don't know anything."
  • 00:07:03.090 --> 00:07:05.090
  • And then they get to 25 and something changes.
  • 00:07:07.160 --> 00:07:10.260
  • They call and ask for occasional advice.
  • 00:07:10.270 --> 00:07:13.060
  • And then they get to be about 30, and they got kids of their
  • 00:07:15.070 --> 00:07:18.020
  • own and their respect just begins to soar, and they start
  • 00:07:18.030 --> 00:07:22.210
  • to understand.
  • 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:23.280
  • And then they get to be about 60 and they think, "You know, I
  • 00:07:23.290 --> 00:07:27.050
  • wish I could talk to them again, and I would have asked them more
  • 00:07:27.060 --> 00:07:31.060
  • questions."
  • 00:07:31.070 --> 00:07:32.250
  • But it's like it goes from this believing everything, to
  • 00:07:32.260 --> 00:07:35.030
  • believing nothing, to believing everything again.
  • 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:37.160
  • It's kind of strange.
  • 00:07:37.170 --> 00:07:39.070
  • Have you observed that?
  • 00:07:39.080 --> 00:07:42.020
  • But they represent our first concept and that's why it's
  • 00:07:42.030 --> 00:07:45.030
  • important for children to honor their parents.
  • 00:07:45.040 --> 00:07:47.010
  • It's very important for children--for parents to live
  • 00:07:47.020 --> 00:07:50.250
  • honorable lives because your child's concept of God is gonna
  • 00:07:50.260 --> 00:07:55.280
  • largely come from your influence.
  • 00:07:55.290 --> 00:07:59.160
  • Now, maybe I should take a moment and talk about, what does
  • 00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:02.140
  • the word honor mean?
  • 00:08:02.150 --> 00:08:03.270
  • When we say honor our father and our mother, to honor in the
  • 00:08:03.280 --> 00:08:07.090
  • Hebrew, to honor means to make weighty, to give gravity and
  • 00:08:07.100 --> 00:08:12.270
  • importance to their, their being, to promote, to glorify,
  • 00:08:12.280 --> 00:08:16.240
  • to boast about, to revere, that's the Hebrew.
  • 00:08:16.250 --> 00:08:19.250
  • In Greek it's the word timoreo and it means to prize, to honor,
  • 00:08:19.260 --> 00:08:24.240
  • to value, also to revere.
  • 00:08:24.250 --> 00:08:27.120
  • Honor your father and mother.
  • 00:08:27.130 --> 00:08:28.210
  • By the way, that commandment we read it clearly in Hebrew and
  • 00:08:28.220 --> 00:08:31.130
  • clearly in Greek, there's no question about what it means
  • 00:08:31.140 --> 00:08:34.100
  • because we've got it coming from the words of Jesus and from
  • 00:08:34.110 --> 00:08:37.230
  • the Old Testament example.
  • 00:08:37.240 --> 00:08:40.130
  • Proverbs 10:1, the Proverbs of Solomon, "A wise son makes a
  • 00:08:40.140 --> 00:08:44.120
  • glad father, but a foolish son is the grief of his mother."
  • 00:08:44.130 --> 00:08:49.060
  • Proverbs 15:20, "A wise son makes a father glad, but a
  • 00:08:49.070 --> 00:08:53.110
  • foolish man despises his mother."
  • 00:08:53.120 --> 00:08:56.170
  • Proverbs 19:26, "He who mistreats his father and chases
  • 00:08:56.180 --> 00:09:01.060
  • away his mother is a son who causes shame and brings
  • 00:09:01.070 --> 00:09:05.030
  • reproach."
  • 00:09:05.040 --> 00:09:06.090
  • All through the Bible, the principle about revering, and
  • 00:09:06.100 --> 00:09:10.150
  • honoring, and respecting your father and mother is a pretty
  • 00:09:10.160 --> 00:09:14.200

  • A godly woman entrusted with one of the most awesome

  • Well, let's get back to today's presentation and learn some
  • 00:10:26.040 --> 00:10:29.020
  • more amazing facts from the Word of God.
  • 00:10:29.030 --> 00:10:31.060
  • Doug: Not only will parents represent God to your children,
  • 00:10:33.030 --> 00:10:36.210
  • but their concept of marriage is gonna come from you.
  • 00:10:36.220 --> 00:10:41.170
  • Not only is it important that children honor their parents and
  • 00:10:41.180 --> 00:10:45.030
  • that parents live honorably, but parents must be very careful to
  • 00:10:45.040 --> 00:10:50.150
  • honor each other.
  • 00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:53.080
  • Because if a father does not honor his wife, your son
  • 00:10:53.090 --> 00:10:58.260
  • probably will not honor his.
  • 00:10:58.270 --> 00:11:01.270
  • If a mother does not respect her husband, your daughter will
  • 00:11:01.280 --> 00:11:06.140
  • probably not respect her husband.
  • 00:11:06.150 --> 00:11:10.080
  • And so, the model that the parents establish for those
  • 00:11:10.090 --> 00:11:14.100
  • children, what goes around will come around, history will repeat
  • 00:11:14.110 --> 00:11:19.040
  • itself.
  • 00:11:19.050 --> 00:11:20.100
  • Now, some of you might be thinking, "But pastor Doug, I
  • 00:11:20.110 --> 00:11:21.180
  • grew up in a family that was so dysfunctional.
  • 00:11:21.190 --> 00:11:23.150
  • My mother and father were not very honorable.
  • 00:11:23.160 --> 00:11:25.120
  • They didn't honor each other, and now it's causing me
  • 00:11:25.130 --> 00:11:27.090
  • problems."
  • 00:11:27.100 --> 00:11:28.150
  • By God's grace, you need to break the cycle for the next
  • 00:11:28.160 --> 00:11:31.070
  • generation, and it can happen.
  • 00:11:31.080 --> 00:11:34.020
  • You know, one of the things I'm amazed at when I read the Bible
  • 00:11:34.030 --> 00:11:36.170
  • is how some of these rotten kings had good kids, and how
  • 00:11:36.180 --> 00:11:41.210
  • some of the good kings had rotten kids.
  • 00:11:41.220 --> 00:11:45.100
  • And so, you can't always say, "Well, I'm a victim because of
  • 00:11:45.110 --> 00:11:49.020
  • the way I grew up, I can't help it."
  • 00:11:49.030 --> 00:11:52.000
  • You need to break the cycle.
  • 00:11:52.010 --> 00:11:53.190
  • "Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest
  • 00:11:54.030 --> 00:11:58.050
  • you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart
  • 00:11:58.060 --> 00:12:00.220
  • from your heart all the days of your life.
  • 00:12:00.230 --> 00:12:03.080
  • And teach them to your children and your grandchildren."
  • 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:08.060
  • I don't have time to read you all the verses that talk about
  • 00:12:08.070 --> 00:12:10.250
  • teaching the Word of God to your children, here a little, there a
  • 00:12:10.260 --> 00:12:14.150
  • little.
  • 00:12:14.160 --> 00:12:15.150
  • Put it on the doorpost.
  • 00:12:15.160 --> 00:12:17.200
  • Put it in your house when you lay down, when you rise up.
  • 00:12:17.210 --> 00:12:21.080
  • One of the most important things if you want your children to
  • 00:12:21.090 --> 00:12:24.060
  • grow up and be honorable and serve God, you must be honorable
  • 00:12:24.070 --> 00:12:27.240
  • and have family worship.
  • 00:12:27.250 --> 00:12:30.120
  • The whole idea of honoring your father and mother is learned
  • 00:12:30.130 --> 00:12:33.090
  • through the Word of God, and it's implying that you're
  • 00:12:33.100 --> 00:12:36.010
  • teaching the Word of God in your family.
  • 00:12:36.020 --> 00:12:38.250
  • The Bible says these words should be taught to the children
  • 00:12:38.260 --> 00:12:41.060
  • and your children's children.
  • 00:12:41.070 --> 00:12:43.200
  • Bible says grandparents and parents teach them to the
  • 00:12:43.210 --> 00:12:49.030
  • children.
  • 00:12:49.040 --> 00:12:50.090
  • Colossians 3:21, "Fathers, do
  • 00:12:50.100 --> 00:12:53.020
  • not provoke your children, lest
  • 00:12:53.030 --> 00:12:54.180
  • they become discouraged."
  • 00:12:54.190 --> 00:12:56.100
  • There's a balance between disciplining your children and
  • 00:12:56.110 --> 00:12:59.120
  • nagging and badgering them so they're exasperated.
  • 00:12:59.130 --> 00:13:03.050
  • You need to know how to guide them, tell them what's right,
  • 00:13:03.060 --> 00:13:05.080
  • tell them what's wrong, and when they do something, right, tell
  • 00:13:05.090 --> 00:13:08.030
  • them, encourage them, thank them.
  • 00:13:08.040 --> 00:13:10.280
  • If you're not appreciative in the home, they won't be when
  • 00:13:10.290 --> 00:13:13.040
  • they leave the home.
  • 00:13:13.050 --> 00:13:15.000
  • And so, children will much more do what they see than what they
  • 00:13:15.010 --> 00:13:19.030
  • hear.
  • 00:13:19.040 --> 00:13:20.000
  • So, these things must be modeled.
  • 00:13:20.010 --> 00:13:21.280
  • Heard about a young boy that was talking to his father and he
  • 00:13:21.290 --> 00:13:24.020
  • said, "Dad, is it always true that parents know more than
  • 00:13:24.030 --> 00:13:27.280
  • their children?"
  • 00:13:27.290 --> 00:13:28.240
  • Said, "Yes, son, it's always true."
  • 00:13:28.250 --> 00:13:31.230
  • He said, "Dads always know more than their sons?"
  • 00:13:31.240 --> 00:13:34.180
  • Said, "Yes, son, dad, always--dad's always know more
  • 00:13:34.190 --> 00:13:37.050
  • than their sons."
  • 00:13:37.060 --> 00:13:38.110
  • It was quiet and he said, "Who invented the telephone?"
  • 00:13:38.120 --> 00:13:42.150
  • He said, "Well, Alexander Graham Bell."
  • 00:13:42.160 --> 00:13:44.270
  • "So, how come his father didn't invent it?"
  • 00:13:44.280 --> 00:13:46.280
  • Evidently, he knew somebody more than his father is the
  • 00:13:50.110 --> 00:13:52.130
  • implication.
  • 00:13:52.140 --> 00:13:54.140
  • You honor your mother and father by not staying a child forever.
  • 00:13:55.100 --> 00:14:00.200
  • The responsibility of parents is to basically train your children
  • 00:14:00.210 --> 00:14:07.140
  • for independence.
  • 00:14:07.150 --> 00:14:09.170
  • From the time they're born, they are utterly dependent and your
  • 00:14:09.180 --> 00:14:13.190
  • responsibility is to teach them to be independent, responsible,
  • 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:19.200
  • good, honest, respectful.
  • 00:14:19.210 --> 00:14:23.170
  • And you know, there needs to be respect in the family.
  • 00:14:23.180 --> 00:14:29.050
  • You know, when kids grow up and they see mom and dad yelling at
  • 00:14:29.060 --> 00:14:33.200
  • each other, but they go out in public and they're nice, they'll
  • 00:14:33.210 --> 00:14:38.030
  • grow up thinking that yelling is the way that you handle things
  • 00:14:38.040 --> 00:14:41.200
  • in your families and in your personal relationships, just
  • 00:14:41.210 --> 00:14:46.030
  • whatever they see in the family ends up being reproduced.
  • 00:14:46.040 --> 00:14:49.180
  • That's why it's so important to have this model.
  • 00:14:49.190 --> 00:14:51.100
  • We're to train them for independence.
  • 00:14:51.110 --> 00:14:54.080
  • You're not honoring your parents by staying at home when you're
  • 00:14:54.090 --> 00:14:58.010
  • 25, not going to school, and you don't have a job.
  • 00:14:58.020 --> 00:15:01.230
  • Parents, you are not honoring God or helping your children by
  • 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:06.010
  • letting them do that.
  • 00:15:06.020 --> 00:15:08.070
  • There comes a time where the best thing in the world you can
  • 00:15:08.080 --> 00:15:10.200
  • do for your kids is to practice some tough love and say, "Praise
  • 00:15:10.210 --> 00:15:14.160
  • the Lord, you're healthy, you're educated, there's the door,
  • 00:15:14.170 --> 00:15:18.250
  • seize the day.
  • 00:15:18.260 --> 00:15:20.260
  • You're gonna have an exciting life.
  • 00:15:22.190 --> 00:15:24.270
  • Send me a postcard when you get a job.
  • 00:15:24.280 --> 00:15:28.150
  • Keep in touch."
  • 00:15:28.160 --> 00:15:30.240
  • But you all know what I'm talking about.
  • 00:15:30.250 --> 00:15:32.060
  • Sometimes people don't understand--you know, the Bible
  • 00:15:32.070 --> 00:15:37.180
  • says in Genesis, "A man will leave his father and mother and
  • 00:15:37.190 --> 00:15:44.000
  • cleave unto his wife."
  • 00:15:44.010 --> 00:15:45.070
  • And some of you are thinking, "Well, I don't have a wife or a
  • 00:15:45.080 --> 00:15:46.150
  • husband yet, so I'm just staying at home."
  • 00:15:46.160 --> 00:15:47.250
  • No, no, you're probably not gonna get one either if you're
  • 00:15:47.260 --> 00:15:50.140
  • 45, and still living with mom and dad.
  • 00:15:50.150 --> 00:15:53.150
  • And you gotta--folks are thinking, "You know, I can't
  • 00:15:53.160 --> 00:15:55.250
  • compete, he's still bragging about mom's cooking, and he's 30
  • 00:15:55.260 --> 00:15:58.140
  • years old, and he's living at home.
  • 00:15:58.150 --> 00:16:00.150
  • How could I ever compete with that?"
  • 00:16:00.160 --> 00:16:01.250
  • And if you want to be on the market and have your own home,
  • 00:16:01.260 --> 00:16:04.240
  • there comes a time when you gotta leave the nest.
  • 00:16:04.250 --> 00:16:07.070
  • And, you know, you even see this in nature.
  • 00:16:07.080 --> 00:16:10.040
  • When the little eagle is young, eagles are interesting because,
  • 00:16:10.050 --> 00:16:13.140
  • you know, they mate for life, they're very devoted companions.
  • 00:16:13.150 --> 00:16:16.120
  • The mother and the father both care for the chick, they work
  • 00:16:16.130 --> 00:16:18.260
  • together.
  • 00:16:18.270 --> 00:16:20.010
  • And they make their nests real fluffy when they're babies,
  • 00:16:20.020 --> 00:16:25.270
  • keeps the eggs from cracking.
  • 00:16:25.280 --> 00:16:27.070
  • The nest is made out of sticks, and rocks, and all kinds of
  • 00:16:27.080 --> 00:16:29.090
  • things, and bones and--but they get a lot of down, and fluff.
  • 00:16:29.100 --> 00:16:33.070
  • And as the chicks get older, pretty soon they get big and
  • 00:16:33.080 --> 00:16:37.180
  • they're crowding each other in their little nest and they're
  • 00:16:37.190 --> 00:16:39.260
  • stretching their wings, and they're flapping.
  • 00:16:39.270 --> 00:16:41.110
  • They get where the parents know, you know, they can fly, but
  • 00:16:41.120 --> 00:16:44.270
  • they're comfortable 'cause we're bringing them food every day.
  • 00:16:44.280 --> 00:16:47.220
  • You know what the parents start doing?
  • 00:16:47.230 --> 00:16:50.120
  • They start bringing less food, and they start getting hungry.
  • 00:16:50.130 --> 00:16:56.130
  • And then the parents start to scratch up all the down and they
  • 00:16:56.140 --> 00:16:59.060
  • throw all that soft stuff out of the nest, so they're not only
  • 00:16:59.070 --> 00:17:01.240
  • hungry, they're uncomfortable.
  • 00:17:01.250 --> 00:17:03.180
  • They have all these bones, and sharp sticks, and rocks in there
  • 00:17:03.190 --> 00:17:06.210
  • and they go, "What's happened, don't you love me anymore?"
  • 00:17:06.220 --> 00:17:09.210
  • And they're basically saying, "You got wings, you gotta learn
  • 00:17:09.220 --> 00:17:12.110
  • to fly."
  • 00:17:12.120 --> 00:17:13.210
  • The time comes when you gotta take the leap and yes, there's
  • 00:17:13.220 --> 00:17:16.260
  • risk and danger out there but, you know, you just can't stay at
  • 00:17:16.270 --> 00:17:19.090
  • home.
  • 00:17:19.100 --> 00:17:20.120
  • So, part of that honor relationship of parent and child
  • 00:17:20.130 --> 00:17:23.240
  • is that you know you're supposed to ultimately prepare them for
  • 00:17:23.250 --> 00:17:27.250
  • the time when they launch.
  • 00:17:27.260 --> 00:17:31.040
  • There needs to be a launch time.
  • 00:17:31.050 --> 00:17:33.060
  • Should children honor a dishonorable parent?
  • 00:17:34.010 --> 00:17:39.090
  • Now, whenever you talk about the subject about honoring mother
  • 00:17:39.100 --> 00:17:41.120
  • and father, someone will invariably say, "Well, that's
  • 00:17:41.130 --> 00:17:45.030
  • easy for you to say.
  • 00:17:45.040 --> 00:17:47.090
  • You don't know my father, you don't know my mother.
  • 00:17:47.100 --> 00:17:50.260
  • They are impossible.
  • 00:17:50.270 --> 00:17:52.240
  • They--the way they treated me growing up.
  • 00:17:52.250 --> 00:17:54.290
  • I was mistreated."
  • 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:56.090
  • How do you deal with those situations?
  • 00:17:56.100 --> 00:17:58.030
  • Well, there may be areas where you say, "You know, I do try to
  • 00:17:58.040 --> 00:18:01.140
  • honor but there are the days when I just, you know, I can't
  • 00:18:01.150 --> 00:18:04.240
  • speak peaceably to them because they're so unreasonable.
  • 00:18:04.250 --> 00:18:07.180
  • And even after I'm an adult, they keep meddling in my life
  • 00:18:07.190 --> 00:18:10.280
  • and telling me what to do, or I can't talk to them.
  • 00:18:10.290 --> 00:18:13.040
  • Every time we talk, we fight."
  • 00:18:13.050 --> 00:18:14.160
  • And what do you do?
  • 00:18:14.170 --> 00:18:16.080
  • And you can fill in the blank, whatever your situation is, are
  • 00:18:16.090 --> 00:18:19.090
  • you, no doubt, in those situations?
  • 00:18:19.100 --> 00:18:22.200
  • You should always be honorable to their position as your mother
  • 00:18:22.210 --> 00:18:28.100
  • and your father.
  • 00:18:28.110 --> 00:18:29.050
  • You need to respect them for that.
  • 00:18:29.060 --> 00:18:31.140
  • If you cannot communicate peaceably, maybe you're a
  • 00:18:31.150 --> 00:18:33.270
  • Christian and they're not.
  • 00:18:33.280 --> 00:18:35.150
  • If they do not ask you to violate some command or
  • 00:18:35.160 --> 00:18:38.120
  • principle, respect them.
  • 00:18:38.130 --> 00:18:41.020
  • And if you have problems getting along, write letters if you
  • 00:18:41.030 --> 00:18:44.080
  • can't talk peacefully.
  • 00:18:44.090 --> 00:18:45.150
  • Write a note.
  • 00:18:45.160 --> 00:18:46.110
  • It's hard to argue with a note.
  • 00:18:46.120 --> 00:18:47.290
  • Write a note and say, "You know--" I've got a lot of people
  • 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:50.290
  • I counsel with and they say, "You know, I just--I want to
  • 00:18:51.000 --> 00:18:52.230
  • honor my parents, but whenever I talk to them, it just--they
  • 00:18:52.240 --> 00:18:54.270
  • start to badger me and put me down, and it's just painful."
  • 00:18:54.280 --> 00:18:59.240
  • I say, "All right, well, then say--write them a note, tell
  • 00:18:59.250 --> 00:19:02.220
  • them you love them, you respect them, and just do it through the
  • 00:19:02.230 --> 00:19:04.220
  • mail.
  • 00:19:04.230 --> 00:19:05.280
  • It just creates one little layer of separation where you can
  • 00:19:05.290 --> 00:19:08.020
  • show, 'I respect you, I want to communicate with you but when we
  • 00:19:08.030 --> 00:19:11.270
  • talk, it just isn't--'" You know, and there may come a
  • 00:19:11.280 --> 00:19:15.020
  • time--there are cases where you need to cut off communication
  • 00:19:15.030 --> 00:19:19.290
  • because it is so toxic, but it doesn't mean you do it in a
  • 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:23.280
  • disrespectful way.
  • 00:19:23.290 --> 00:19:25.050
  • You hear what I'm saying?
  • 00:19:25.060 --> 00:19:26.260
  • There is one of the kings in the Bible that had to make his
  • 00:19:26.270 --> 00:19:29.040
  • mother, he had to basically fire her from being Queen because she
  • 00:19:29.050 --> 00:19:33.000
  • was worshiping pagan idols in the temple.
  • 00:19:33.010 --> 00:19:36.080
  • And so, you know, sometimes you have to break that off.
  • 00:19:36.090 --> 00:19:39.120
  • But as far as possible, even the parents who are sometimes
  • 00:19:39.130 --> 00:19:43.010
  • difficult, respect them, honor them.
  • 00:19:43.020 --> 00:19:46.000
  • They're your parents, amen?
  • 00:19:46.010 --> 00:19:48.010
  • That doesn't mean that you need to, once you become an adult,
  • 00:19:49.270 --> 00:19:53.090
  • it's nice to listen to their advice, you don't always have to
  • 00:19:53.100 --> 00:19:56.000
  • follow it.
  • 00:19:56.010 --> 00:19:57.070
  • They don't have to meddle in your lives, but be respectful.
  • 00:19:57.080 --> 00:20:01.070
  • Remember them, write them an occasional note, make a phone
  • 00:20:01.080 --> 00:20:04.250
  • call.
  • 00:20:04.260 --> 00:20:06.000
  • I heard about a woman that called her rabbi and she turned
  • 00:20:06.010 --> 00:20:08.200
  • 60.
  • 00:20:08.210 --> 00:20:09.190
  • She thought it was time to make out her will.
  • 00:20:09.200 --> 00:20:12.030
  • She says, "There's two things I want you to help me with."
  • 00:20:12.040 --> 00:20:14.220
  • She said, "I want to make sure that I'm cremated.
  • 00:20:14.230 --> 00:20:17.030
  • It's more affordable."
  • 00:20:17.040 --> 00:20:19.210
  • And she said, "Then I'd like you to take my ashes, and could you
  • 00:20:19.220 --> 00:20:22.020
  • sprinkle them all around Macy's?"
  • 00:20:22.030 --> 00:20:24.030
  • He said, "Well, I got the first part, but help me understand the
  • 00:20:25.250 --> 00:20:28.030
  • second part."
  • 00:20:28.040 --> 00:20:29.270
  • She said, "Yeah, I just want to be sure my daughters will come
  • 00:20:29.280 --> 00:20:31.270
  • and see me at least twice a week."
  • 00:20:31.280 --> 00:20:33.280
  • "Honor your father and mother that your days will be long upon
  • 00:20:36.140 --> 00:20:39.210
  • the land."
  • 00:20:39.220 --> 00:20:40.270
  • This is a commandment that actually has a promise in it,
  • 00:20:40.280 --> 00:20:43.180
  • did you notice that?
  • 00:20:43.190 --> 00:20:45.190
  • It tells us that your days will be long upon the land.
  • 00:20:46.220 --> 00:20:50.180
  • It says it a couple of different ways.
  • 00:20:50.190 --> 00:20:53.160
  • You look in Deuteronomy 5 where the Ten Commandments are given
  • 00:20:53.170 --> 00:20:56.090
  • there, it's different than you find in Exodus chapter 20.
  • 00:20:56.100 --> 00:20:59.210
  • "Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has
  • 00:20:59.220 --> 00:21:03.090
  • commanded you, that your days may be long, that it may be well
  • 00:21:03.100 --> 00:21:07.060
  • with you in the land where the Lord your God is giving you."
  • 00:21:07.070 --> 00:21:10.190
  • Why does God promise a blessing?
  • 00:21:10.200 --> 00:21:12.120
  • By the way, that was in our Scripture reading also,
  • 00:21:12.130 --> 00:21:15.100
  • Ephesians 6:1, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, that
  • 00:21:15.110 --> 00:21:19.000
  • is right.
  • 00:21:19.010 --> 00:21:20.070
  • Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment,
  • 00:21:20.080 --> 00:21:22.030
  • with promise that it may be will with you that you may live long
  • 00:21:22.040 --> 00:21:26.240
  • upon the earth."
  • 00:21:26.250 --> 00:21:28.270
  • Long life is promised in this commandment, why?
  • 00:21:28.280 --> 00:21:32.260
  • Couple reasons.
  • 00:21:32.270 --> 00:21:33.240
  • One, is God will bless you for it.
  • 00:21:33.250 --> 00:21:35.180
  • The other is, your parents have learned the things they help you
  • 00:21:35.190 --> 00:21:39.050
  • stay out of trouble.
  • 00:21:39.060 --> 00:21:41.180
  • Your parents, when your mother and your father say, "Here are
  • 00:21:41.190 --> 00:21:44.000
  • the car keys, do not drive fast," you honor them, your days
  • 00:21:44.010 --> 00:21:48.110
  • will be long upon the land.
  • 00:21:48.120 --> 00:21:50.240
  • You dishonor them, they may not be as long.
  • 00:21:50.250 --> 00:21:54.220
  • When you disobey, they're giving you advice all the time to try
  • 00:21:54.230 --> 00:21:57.290
  • and keep you alive.
  • 00:21:58.000 --> 00:21:59.250
  • And it's interesting that in the countries that have the longest
  • 00:21:59.260 --> 00:22:04.170
  • life expectancy, they have the best regard for their elders.
  • 00:22:04.180 --> 00:22:08.280
  • You know, what country has the longest life expectancy?
  • 00:22:08.290 --> 00:22:11.210
  • Japanese.
  • 00:22:11.220 --> 00:22:13.220
  • Do they honor their elders there?
  • 00:22:14.180 --> 00:22:16.160
  • It was amazing when they had that tremendous earthquake a few
  • 00:22:16.170 --> 00:22:19.110
  • years ago to see the wonderful tender care that people took for
  • 00:22:19.120 --> 00:22:24.030
  • the elders that were displaced by all of this.
  • 00:22:24.040 --> 00:22:27.030
  • And they were so conscientious, and so careful to because they
  • 00:22:27.040 --> 00:22:31.200
  • have--they're trained from infancy to have high regard for
  • 00:22:31.210 --> 00:22:35.220
  • their elders.
  • 00:22:35.230 --> 00:22:36.290
  • They even take it too far in some cultures, they got ancestor
  • 00:22:37.000 --> 00:22:39.090
  • worship, but they're very careful to respect their elders.
  • 00:22:39.100 --> 00:22:44.000
  • Honor your father and mother that your days might be long.
  • 00:22:44.010 --> 00:22:47.230
  • You know, there's sin in the world today and the reason
  • 00:22:47.240 --> 00:22:49.080
  • there's sin in the world today is because our first parents did
  • 00:22:49.090 --> 00:22:55.090
  • not honor their father.
  • 00:22:55.100 --> 00:22:58.120
  • Adam and Eve, when they disobeyed God, they disobeyed
  • 00:22:58.130 --> 00:23:02.020
  • their Heavenly Father, look at all the trouble that it caused.
  • 00:23:02.030 --> 00:23:05.000
  • Death enter the world from disobeying a parent.
  • 00:23:05.010 --> 00:23:09.240
  • And people's lives are often shortened, one, by the curses
  • 00:23:09.250 --> 00:23:13.170
  • that God sends, the other through practically not
  • 00:23:13.180 --> 00:23:15.180
  • listening to the good information and advice our
  • 00:23:15.190 --> 00:23:17.240
  • parents give us.
  • 00:23:17.250 --> 00:23:19.100
  • But he promised your days will be long in the land.
  • 00:23:19.110 --> 00:23:21.170
  • He was bringing them into the Promised Land.
  • 00:23:21.180 --> 00:23:23.110
  • He said, "If you want to live and have a long life and a
  • 00:23:23.120 --> 00:23:25.230
  • peaceful life, honor your parents, and I'll do that for
  • 00:23:25.240 --> 00:23:29.100
  • you."
  • 00:23:29.110 --> 00:23:30.180
  • You know, this is a wonderful commandment that has a promise
  • 00:23:30.190 --> 00:23:33.150
  • in it.
  • 00:23:33.160 --> 00:23:35.000
  • The children of Israel learn to be faithful.
  • 00:23:35.010 --> 00:23:36.280
  • There's a story in the Bible, I don't have time to read the
  • 00:23:36.290 --> 00:23:39.120
  • whole thing.
  • 00:23:39.130 --> 00:23:40.190
  • But you look in your Bibles in the Book of Jeremiah chapter 35,
  • 00:23:40.200 --> 00:23:44.030
  • it talks about the Babylonians had surrounded Jerusalem.
  • 00:23:44.040 --> 00:23:49.210
  • They were about to destroy the city, judgment was coming.
  • 00:23:49.220 --> 00:23:53.020
  • Jeremiah was told by the Lord, "I want you to call the
  • 00:23:53.030 --> 00:23:57.020
  • Rechabites, bring them into the temple."
  • 00:23:57.030 --> 00:24:00.210
  • So this family, this tribe of rehab, who is the son of
  • 00:24:00.220 --> 00:24:04.250
  • Jehonadab, who is a friend of Jehu, that's another history,
  • 00:24:04.260 --> 00:24:09.200
  • they were brought into the temple.
  • 00:24:09.210 --> 00:24:11.170
  • And Jeremiah had some wine poured into pitchers and set
  • 00:24:11.180 --> 00:24:15.290
  • cups down in front of the leaders of the Rechabites who
  • 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:18.130
  • were there in the city, he said, "Have a drink."
  • 00:24:18.140 --> 00:24:22.100
  • And they said, "No, we'll not drink."
  • 00:24:22.110 --> 00:24:24.090
  • And he said, "Why not?
  • 00:24:24.100 --> 00:24:25.210
  • Have something to drink, thus saith the Lord."
  • 00:24:25.220 --> 00:24:28.000
  • And they said, "No, because our father Rahab," Rahab, that's how
  • 00:24:28.010 --> 00:24:33.170
  • you say it, "he commanded us never to build a house, never to
  • 00:24:33.180 --> 00:24:39.070
  • drink anything from the vine, and to live in tents and he said
  • 00:24:39.080 --> 00:24:44.210
  • we'd have long lives if we followed his advice,' and for
  • 00:24:44.220 --> 00:24:48.120
  • several generations, they had followed their father's advice,
  • 00:24:48.130 --> 00:24:50.280
  • and none of the Rechabites ever drank wine.
  • 00:24:50.290 --> 00:24:55.130
  • And Jeremiah said, "Thus says the Lord, because the Rechabites
  • 00:24:55.140 --> 00:24:59.170
  • have not disobeyed the Lord, that when Jerusalem is
  • 00:24:59.180 --> 00:25:03.130
  • destroyed, I am gonna preserve them because they obeyed their
  • 00:25:03.140 --> 00:25:07.060
  • father and their mother."
  • 00:25:07.070 --> 00:25:09.160
  • And he said, "They will never fail to have a person to stand
  • 00:25:09.170 --> 00:25:12.180
  • before me because they've shown respect for their elders this
  • 00:25:12.190 --> 00:25:16.000
  • way."
  • 00:25:16.010 --> 00:25:17.060
  • And so, before Jerusalem was destroyed, God made Jeremiah act
  • 00:25:17.070 --> 00:25:21.040
  • out this whole scenario and basically test them, and they
  • 00:25:21.050 --> 00:25:23.220
  • would not drink wine, even though their father was long
  • 00:25:23.230 --> 00:25:25.230
  • dead.
  • 00:25:25.240 --> 00:25:26.290
  • They said, "Because he commanded us and we've not done it for
  • 00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:28.130
  • generations.
  • 00:25:28.140 --> 00:25:29.190
  • And he said don't build a house and only reason we're in the
  • 00:25:29.200 --> 00:25:31.180
  • city now is 'cause Nebuchadnezzar surrounded the
  • 00:25:31.190 --> 00:25:33.180
  • city."
  • 00:25:33.190 --> 00:25:34.230
  • And said, "But we live in tents as our father commanded."
  • 00:25:34.240 --> 00:25:37.120
  • And God said, "Because you obey your father, I'm gonna bless
  • 00:25:37.130 --> 00:25:40.010
  • you.
  • 00:25:40.020 --> 00:25:41.000
  • I wish my people would obey their Father."
  • 00:25:41.010 --> 00:25:44.120
  • And so, honor your father and mother, first and foremost, it's
  • 00:25:44.130 --> 00:25:49.010
  • talking about God.
  • 00:25:49.020 --> 00:25:50.080
  • You know, God is portrayed as our Father in heaven, and he
  • 00:25:50.090 --> 00:25:52.190
  • also sometimes uses the verbiage of a mother.
  • 00:25:52.200 --> 00:25:55.060
  • Says, "As a hen protects its chicken under its wing, so I've
  • 00:25:55.070 --> 00:25:59.050
  • loved you.
  • 00:25:59.060 --> 00:26:00.030
  • Can a woman forget her nursing child?
  • 00:26:00.040 --> 00:26:02.180
  • How can I forget you?"
  • 00:26:02.190 --> 00:26:03.280
  • So, God loves us with the love of a father and a mother.
  • 00:26:03.290 --> 00:26:07.040
  • And if you want your days to be long, I don't mean just long in
  • 00:26:07.050 --> 00:26:09.260
  • this world, if you want your days to be long and the earth
  • 00:26:09.270 --> 00:26:12.020
  • made new, we need to learn to honor our Father in heaven,
  • 00:26:12.030 --> 00:26:16.200
  • amen.
