  • Allen Jackson: The topic for the weekend is freedom.
  • 00:00:24.150 --> 00:00:28.060
  • If I had to choose a handful of words that describes what
  • 00:00:28.070 --> 00:00:31.080
  • Jesus represents in our lives, freedom would have to be
  • 00:00:31.090 --> 00:00:33.170
  • included in that short list.
  • 00:00:33.180 --> 00:00:35.240
  • Jesus brings freedom to us, spiritual freedom to us, freedom
  • 00:00:35.250 --> 00:00:39.220
  • from our sins, freedom from our failures, freedom from our past.
  • 00:00:39.230 --> 00:00:43.220
  • He brings physical freedom to us, freedom from our
  • 00:00:43.230 --> 00:00:45.190
  • addictions, freedom from sickness and disease,
  • 00:00:45.200 --> 00:00:49.200
  • freedom from generational curses that plague us, freedom
  • 00:00:49.210 --> 00:00:54.000
  • from demonic oppression.
  • 00:00:54.010 --> 00:00:56.270
  • He brings us freedom from worry, emotional freedom, so that we
  • 00:00:56.280 --> 00:01:01.090
  • can live in peace and confidence and not frightened
  • 00:01:01.100 --> 00:01:04.290
  • and threatened and anxious.
  • 00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:07.110
  • Jesus is about freedom.
  • 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:08.220
  • He does not put you in bondage.
  • 00:01:08.230 --> 00:01:10.070
  • One of the great lies that has settled over Christendom is
  • 00:01:10.080 --> 00:01:14.030
  • that Christianity will limit you.
  • 00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:17.070
  • Nothing could be further from the truth.
  • 00:01:17.080 --> 00:01:18.230
  • It will bring freedom to you that nothing else will bring.
  • 00:01:18.240 --> 00:01:23.070
  • And whatever your circumstances are, you know, being
  • 00:01:23.080 --> 00:01:25.030
  • a Christ-follower doesn't mean you live in complete freedom
  • 00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:27.140
  • 24/7 for the entirety of your journey.
  • 00:01:27.150 --> 00:01:30.250
  • There are times and seasons where God walks us
  • 00:01:30.260 --> 00:01:32.290
  • through places where we learn to trust him, to experience his
  • 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:35.170
  • power, to recognize the voice of his spirit, to learn freedom
  • 00:01:35.180 --> 00:01:39.110
  • in new ways.
  • 00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:42.010
  • We continue to grow up in the Lord.
  • 00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:44.030
  • One of the surprises to me is that no matter what season
  • 00:01:44.040 --> 00:01:46.290
  • of your life you're in, you have to keep growing.
  • 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:50.120
  • You know, when I was 10 or 12, I thought you got to about 20,
  • 00:01:50.130 --> 00:01:52.290
  • 21, you had all figured out.
  • 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:55.260
  • And now that I'm into my 30s, I'm still learning.
  • 00:01:55.270 --> 00:02:02.020
  • I'm well into my 30s.
  • 00:02:02.030 --> 00:02:04.200
  • So I want to give you three or four things that are
  • 00:02:04.210 --> 00:02:06.070
  • necessary as you prepare for freedom.
  • 00:02:06.080 --> 00:02:07.290
  • Everybody got some space in your life where a little more
  • 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:09.240
  • freedom'd be okay with you?
  • 00:02:09.250 --> 00:02:12.000
  • I thought so.
  • 00:02:12.010 --> 00:02:13.160
  • There is power available to set us free.
  • 00:02:13.170 --> 00:02:17.120
  • Jesus said, "You know the truth and it would set you free."
  • 00:02:17.130 --> 00:02:20.180
  • So the more we know the truth, the greater
  • 00:02:20.190 --> 00:02:22.120
  • the freedom we'll have.
  • 00:02:22.130 --> 00:02:24.130
  • For too long we have folded our arms and said, "I said
  • 00:02:24.140 --> 00:02:25.230
  • the sinners prayer, got dipped in a tank and I'm done."
  • 00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:29.080
  • What a deception!
  • 00:02:29.090 --> 00:02:32.080
  • You may have secured an understanding of eternity
  • 00:02:32.090 --> 00:02:36.000
  • in that, and you may have gained legal access to the fullness
  • 00:02:36.010 --> 00:02:39.290
  • of the kingdom of God, but it doesn't mean that your life is
  • 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.050
  • totally transformed.
  • 00:02:43.060 --> 00:02:45.000
  • You have to walk that out.
  • 00:02:45.010 --> 00:02:46.110
  • Work out your salvation, the scripture says.
  • 00:02:46.120 --> 00:02:49.250
  • So, some components of freedom-- one is consecration.
  • 00:02:49.260 --> 00:02:53.080
  • Big, old religious word.
  • 00:02:53.090 --> 00:02:55.090
  • It means to set yourself apart for God's purposes.
  • 00:02:55.100 --> 00:02:59.100
  • In Joshua chapter 3, Joshua was getting ready to lead
  • 00:02:59.110 --> 00:03:02.040
  • the children of Israel, the former slaves of Egypt,
  • 00:03:02.050 --> 00:03:05.160
  • into the promised land.
  • 00:03:05.170 --> 00:03:06.260
  • They'd never been there before.
  • 00:03:06.270 --> 00:03:08.090
  • Moses, the leader recruited to do that, was not effective.
  • 00:03:08.100 --> 00:03:11.190
  • He wasn't able to complete the assignment.
  • 00:03:11.200 --> 00:03:14.080
  • And now Joshua, Moses's successor, is ready, and he says
  • 00:03:14.090 --> 00:03:18.020
  • to the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow
  • 00:03:18.030 --> 00:03:21.190
  • the Lord will do amazing things among you."
  • 00:03:21.200 --> 00:03:24.040
  • Before God's going to do amazing things, you have to do something
  • 00:03:24.050 --> 00:03:27.030
  • for yourself.
  • 00:03:27.040 --> 00:03:29.020
  • And consecration in this context was about cleansing, physical
  • 00:03:29.030 --> 00:03:32.280
  • cleansing and spiritual cleansing.
  • 00:03:32.290 --> 00:03:34.250
  • You and I have to prepare ourselves for God's freedom.
  • 00:03:34.260 --> 00:03:37.060
  • Most of us would be happy if God would deliver us from the thing
  • 00:03:37.070 --> 00:03:40.050
  • we've directed his attention to, right?
  • 00:03:40.060 --> 00:03:43.270
  • We want to be delivered from credit card debt.
  • 00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:47.090
  • We want to be delivered from the consequences
  • 00:03:47.100 --> 00:03:49.080
  • of over-eating this week.
  • 00:03:49.090 --> 00:03:51.220
  • We'd like to wake up Monday morning 10 pounds thinner.
  • 00:03:51.230 --> 00:03:57.230
  • We're quite happy for God to bring freedom to the things
  • 00:03:59.290 --> 00:04:02.130
  • that we direct him to.
  • 00:04:02.140 --> 00:04:05.050
  • But the greatest breakthroughs in our lives are when we
  • 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:07.210
  • cooperate with God directing us towards his intent.
  • 00:04:07.220 --> 00:04:13.250
  • And to do that, we have to consecrate ourselves.
  • 00:04:13.260 --> 00:04:16.250
  • We have to willingly set ourselves apart for the purposes
  • 00:04:16.260 --> 00:04:19.200
  • of God, be willing to cleanse ourselves, repent!
  • 00:04:19.210 --> 00:04:23.200
  • Say, "God, I'm sorry.
  • 00:04:23.210 --> 00:04:25.160
  • I'm not just going to stamp my foot and demand that you
  • 00:04:25.170 --> 00:04:27.090
  • set me free.
  • 00:04:27.100 --> 00:04:29.090
  • I want to tell you my intent is to honor you with my life,
  • 00:04:29.100 --> 00:04:32.180
  • and forgive me when I've treated you casually, when I've treated
  • 00:04:32.190 --> 00:04:37.080
  • your commandments as suggestions, when I've taken
  • 00:04:37.090 --> 00:04:40.250
  • your guidance as prompts, but I really haven't intended to honor
  • 00:04:40.260 --> 00:04:44.150
  • you with my life.
  • 00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:45.260
  • God, I'm sorry.
  • 00:04:45.270 --> 00:04:47.060
  • I wanna consecrate myself to your purposes."
  • 00:04:47.070 --> 00:04:51.110
  • This isn't about who's watching or what you got caught doing,
  • 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:54.080
  • this is between you and the Lord.
  • 00:04:54.090 --> 00:04:55.190
  • The goal is freedom, breakthroughs, deliverance,
  • 00:04:55.200 --> 00:04:59.010
  • wholeness!
  • 00:04:59.020 --> 00:05:01.110
  • And it begins with a willingness to consecrate themselves.
  • 00:05:01.120 --> 00:05:03.160
  • The Israelites that had a very difficult lesson.
  • 00:05:03.170 --> 00:05:07.250
  • The generation who had left Egypt, the generation who had
  • 00:05:07.260 --> 00:05:10.150
  • made their way through the brick pits, all died in the wilderness
  • 00:05:10.160 --> 00:05:14.060
  • with the exception of two families.
  • 00:05:14.070 --> 00:05:17.070
  • So this is a second generation of Hebrew slaves on their way
  • 00:05:17.080 --> 00:05:21.230
  • to the promised land.
  • 00:05:21.240 --> 00:05:23.040
  • So when Joshua says, "Get yourselves ready."
  • 00:05:23.050 --> 00:05:24.140
  • I'm thinkin' they got a little focus, 'cause the last crew that
  • 00:05:24.150 --> 00:05:26.280
  • got up to this gateway didn't do so well.
  • 00:05:26.290 --> 00:05:31.050
  • Not everybody that's given the invitation into God's
  • 00:05:31.060 --> 00:05:33.210
  • freedom accepts it.
  • 00:05:33.220 --> 00:05:38.250
  • The second component is listening.
  • 00:05:38.260 --> 00:05:42.070
  • The willingness to listen to God.
  • 00:05:42.080 --> 00:05:43.190
  • There are very few things throughout the breadth
  • 00:05:43.200 --> 00:05:45.180
  • of scripture that are as consistently presented to us as
  • 00:05:45.190 --> 00:05:49.160
  • a component of the people of God as those who listen to him.
  • 00:05:49.170 --> 00:05:53.230
  • Jesus said, "My sheep know my voice."
  • 00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:57.060
  • But all throughout scripture, the Book of Proverbs talks
  • 00:05:57.070 --> 00:05:59.180
  • about wisdom, crying in the streets for those
  • 00:05:59.190 --> 00:06:03.080
  • who will listen.
  • 00:06:03.090 --> 00:06:05.190
  • God speaks to his people.
  • 00:06:05.200 --> 00:06:08.090
  • He'll speak to you through his word.
  • 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:09.220
  • He'll speak to you through that still small voice
  • 00:06:09.230 --> 00:06:12.230
  • on the inside of you.
  • 00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:14.230
  • He's given you a conscience to know right from wrong.
  • 00:06:14.240 --> 00:06:18.160
  • And if you'll learn to listen to it, the spirit of God
  • 00:06:18.170 --> 00:06:21.020
  • will amplify it.
  • 00:06:21.030 --> 00:06:22.120
  • If you ignore it, it becomes calloused and insensitive.
  • 00:06:22.130 --> 00:06:27.130
  • Learning to listen to God.
  • 00:06:27.140 --> 00:06:30.160
  • He'll speak into your life through
  • 00:06:30.170 --> 00:06:31.280
  • the most improbable places.
  • 00:06:31.290 --> 00:06:34.170
  • Most of us imagined that the enemy, evil will tempt you
  • 00:06:34.180 --> 00:06:38.080
  • from almost any possible vantage point.
  • 00:06:38.090 --> 00:06:41.170
  • Why would we not imagine it even to be more true that God could
  • 00:06:41.180 --> 00:06:45.130
  • speak into our lives in those ways?
  • 00:06:45.140 --> 00:06:49.060
  • I'm not asking you to be strange or weird, to start listening
  • 00:06:49.070 --> 00:06:53.260
  • to voices from beyond yourself, I'm asking you to become far
  • 00:06:53.270 --> 00:06:57.120
  • more intent on listening for what God would say to you.
  • 00:06:57.130 --> 00:07:03.140
  • In the context about any other discussion other than this one,
  • 00:07:06.040 --> 00:07:11.000
  • we champion those notions of people who are intuitive.
  • 00:07:11.010 --> 00:07:14.220
  • We'll make movies about horse-whisperers,
  • 00:07:14.230 --> 00:07:18.080
  • and we'll all watch tearfully.
  • 00:07:18.090 --> 00:07:20.210
  • "What a wonderful gift!"
  • 00:07:20.220 --> 00:07:23.190
  • And then we talk about people listening for God, and we go,
  • 00:07:23.200 --> 00:07:25.220
  • "You're crazy!
  • 00:07:25.230 --> 00:07:28.130
  • Now, I don't want to be one of those kinda--
  • 00:07:28.140 --> 00:07:29.260
  • What is wrong with you?!
  • 00:07:29.270 --> 00:07:31.250
  • What has happened?
  • 00:07:31.260 --> 00:07:33.050
  • You mean you hear voices?"
  • 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:34.150
  • All of a sudden we get on our skeptic suits, and we cross our
  • 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:35.260
  • arms, and we kinda huff and puff and go,
  • 00:07:35.270 --> 00:07:37.200
  • "I don't intend to do--"
  • 00:07:37.210 --> 00:07:39.200
  • I do!
  • 00:07:39.210 --> 00:07:42.140
  • Why would you honor every other sort of listening but refuse
  • 00:07:42.150 --> 00:07:46.260
  • the notion of listening to God?
  • 00:07:46.270 --> 00:07:49.230
  • Don't harden your heart like that.
  • 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:53.230
  • "Well, I said the sinner's prayer!"
  • 00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:55.030
  • Well, I'm happy for you!
  • 00:07:55.040 --> 00:07:57.050
  • I hope everybody will say it!
  • 00:07:57.060 --> 00:07:58.160
  • But if you don't intend to listen to God, saying that
  • 00:07:58.170 --> 00:08:00.120
  • prayer has very limited impact for you.
  • 00:08:00.130 --> 00:08:06.030
  • Happy, happy holidays...
  • 00:08:06.040 --> 00:08:11.150
  • Consecration, listening, number three is a desire to please God.
  • 00:08:11.160 --> 00:08:17.050
  • This isn't complicated stuff.
  • 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:18.210
  • You really have to have, at the heart of your life,
  • 00:08:18.220 --> 00:08:22.050
  • a desire to be pleasing to the Lord.
  • 00:08:22.060 --> 00:08:23.240
  • Not, "What can I get away with?
  • 00:08:23.250 --> 00:08:26.170
  • What's God gonna give to me?
  • 00:08:26.180 --> 00:08:29.050
  • How can I get a little more power to get my way?"
  • 00:08:29.060 --> 00:08:31.070
  • What would it look like to please God?
  • 00:08:31.080 --> 00:08:34.270
  • In Daniel chapter 1, you know Daniel's story.
  • 00:08:34.280 --> 00:08:37.010
  • Daniel's Hebrew, Jewish, but he lives within the season when
  • 00:08:37.020 --> 00:08:42.190
  • God's judgment is poured out upon the Israelites,
  • 00:08:42.200 --> 00:08:45.010
  • and the Babylonians come, Jerusalem is destroyed,
  • 00:08:45.020 --> 00:08:47.120
  • and Daniel and his peer group, many of them are carried away
  • 00:08:47.130 --> 00:08:50.250
  • to Babylon.
  • 00:08:50.260 --> 00:08:52.060
  • Daniel lives his whole life in slavery.
  • 00:08:52.070 --> 00:08:56.080
  • One of the most remarkable men in all of the Bible.
  • 00:08:56.090 --> 00:08:58.210
  • The Bible says God sends angelic messengers to Daniel more than
  • 00:08:58.220 --> 00:09:02.160
  • once to say, "You are highly esteemed."
  • 00:09:02.170 --> 00:09:06.260
  • And yet he leads his whole life as a slave.
  • 00:09:06.270 --> 00:09:10.040
  • But in Daniel chapter 1, we get a real insight
  • 00:09:10.050 --> 00:09:13.130
  • into Daniel's heart.
  • 00:09:13.140 --> 00:09:15.130
  • The smoke of Jerusalem's destruction still lives
  • 00:09:15.140 --> 00:09:20.280
  • in his head.
  • 00:09:20.290 --> 00:09:22.230
  • He's newly arrived in Babylon, they're still trying to sort
  • 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:25.140
  • out what they're gonna do and what life is gonna be about.
  • 00:09:25.150 --> 00:09:29.280
  • And Daniel has been recruited to serve in the court
  • 00:09:29.290 --> 00:09:33.000
  • of the Babylonian King.
  • 00:09:33.010 --> 00:09:35.270
  • And it says in Daniel 1, verse 8, "Daniel resolved not
  • 00:09:35.280 --> 00:09:39.210
  • to defile himself with the royal food and wine."
  • 00:09:39.220 --> 00:09:43.230
  • Now, that's a little blind to you and me, because we don't
  • 00:09:43.240 --> 00:09:45.250
  • have a lot of dietary restrictions on holiness.
  • 00:09:45.260 --> 00:09:49.280
  • But for an observant Jewish man, keeping the dietary rules that
  • 00:09:49.290 --> 00:09:55.050
  • Moses had given them was at the heart of their faith.
  • 00:09:55.060 --> 00:10:01.030
  • And now he's in a country where the diet's different,
  • 00:10:01.040 --> 00:10:05.080
  • and the rules are different and Daniel has every reason
  • 00:10:05.090 --> 00:10:08.180
  • to shrug his shoulders and say, "God hasn't dealt fairly
  • 00:10:08.190 --> 00:10:11.290
  • with me.
  • 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.270
  • I've been a godly young man.
  • 00:10:13.280 --> 00:10:15.110
  • I've been a righteous young man.
  • 00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:16.250
  • I have honored the Lord with my life, and I saw Jerusalem
  • 00:10:16.260 --> 00:10:20.230
  • destroyed and the temple burned and many of my friends
  • 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:23.190
  • slaughtered and now I'm a slave in a foreign country."
  • 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:26.210
  • It would've been so easy for Daniel to be angry
  • 00:10:26.220 --> 00:10:28.240
  • or embittered or frustrated, right?
  • 00:10:28.250 --> 00:10:31.220
  • You ever been-- I've been there with God.
  • 00:10:31.230 --> 00:10:33.170
  • I've stood in the field at night shaking my fist at heaven 'cause
  • 00:10:33.180 --> 00:10:36.010
  • I didn't like God's job performance.
  • 00:10:36.020 --> 00:10:39.240
  • But that's not what Daniel did.
  • 00:10:39.250 --> 00:10:41.170
  • Daniel said--it says of Daniel that he chose not to defile
  • 00:10:41.180 --> 00:10:46.080
  • himself.
  • 00:10:46.090 --> 00:10:47.180
  • He said, "I'm gonna honor the Lord.
  • 00:10:47.190 --> 00:10:48.290
  • Even with my fork."
  • 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:53.020
  • Even with my fork.
  • 00:10:53.030 --> 00:10:56.020
  • Now, that idea is gonna hold true for the breadth
  • 00:10:56.030 --> 00:10:59.270
  • of Daniel's life.
  • 00:10:59.280 --> 00:11:01.200
  • He'll end up being condemned to capital punishment, thrown
  • 00:11:01.210 --> 00:11:04.250
  • into a lion's den because he won't break his commitment
  • 00:11:04.260 --> 00:11:07.180
  • to prayer, and he won't make it private.
  • 00:11:07.190 --> 00:11:12.090
  • But that's later in his life.
  • 00:11:12.100 --> 00:11:13.190
  • I really think that lesson was galvanized in Daniel early
  • 00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:17.110
  • on in this first chapter when he said, "I'm not gonna defile
  • 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:19.190
  • myself.
  • 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:20.290
  • I will please the Lord if I like what he's doing or I don't
  • 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:24.150
  • like what he's doing.
  • 00:11:24.160 --> 00:11:25.260
  • If I'm getting my way or I'm not getting my way.
  • 00:11:25.270 --> 00:11:28.290
  • If the path is easy or hard, I desire to please the Lord."
  • 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:34.290
  • I want to ask you to consider it.
  • 00:11:35.120 --> 00:11:37.170
  • Can you say to the Lord, God, I'd like to please you?
  • 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:42.170
  • male announcer: From the opening chapters of the Bible
  • 00:11:42.180 --> 00:11:44.090
  • to the end, the spirit of God and the power of God are
  • 00:11:44.100 --> 00:11:47.080
  • connected, even synonymous.
  • 00:11:47.090 --> 00:11:49.110
  • And we all at some point have places in our lives where it
  • 00:11:49.120 --> 00:11:52.130
  • would take no less than the power of God to bring
  • 00:11:52.140 --> 00:11:54.150
  • an acceptable outcome.
  • 00:11:54.160 --> 00:11:56.020
  • That's the topic of Pastor Allen's unique new book, based
  • 00:11:56.030 --> 00:11:58.200

  • Together we can make a difference.
  • 00:12:20.280 --> 00:12:26.250
  • Allen Jackson: I chose two chapters from the Book of Acts
  • 00:12:26.260 --> 00:12:29.100
  • because they deal with two of the greatest breakthroughs
  • 00:12:29.110 --> 00:12:31.170
  • in all the New Testament; two big-picture stories.
  • 00:12:31.180 --> 00:12:35.010
  • One is the recruitment of Saul of Tarsus.
  • 00:12:35.020 --> 00:12:38.180
  • He's a pharisee of the pharisees by his own description.
  • 00:12:38.190 --> 00:12:42.100
  • He's an angry, violent, murderous man,
  • 00:12:42.110 --> 00:12:47.220
  • and Jesus recruits him.
  • 00:12:47.230 --> 00:12:51.220
  • The second is the very next chapter.
  • 00:12:51.230 --> 00:12:54.190
  • It's about God pouring out his spirit at the house
  • 00:12:54.200 --> 00:12:58.030
  • of Cornelius, a Roman Centurion.
  • 00:12:58.040 --> 00:13:02.100
  • Now, I want to unpack those, 'cause they changed the course
  • 00:13:02.110 --> 00:13:04.260
  • of the New Testament.
  • 00:13:04.270 --> 00:13:07.000
  • The recruitment of Saul of Tarsus and the outpouring
  • 00:13:07.010 --> 00:13:10.060
  • of the spirit of God in Caesarea at Cornelius's house changed
  • 00:13:10.070 --> 00:13:14.070
  • the whole story.
  • 00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:16.250
  • Up until that point in the narrative, up until we
  • 00:13:16.260 --> 00:13:19.030
  • get to Acts chapter 9, the Jesus story is overwhelmingly--
  • 00:13:19.040 --> 00:13:23.280
  • 99 & 9/10ths percent-- a Jewish story.
  • 00:13:23.290 --> 00:13:29.050
  • And nobody involved in the story thinks it's going to be
  • 00:13:29.060 --> 00:13:31.050
  • anything else.
  • 00:13:31.060 --> 00:13:34.140
  • But we get to Acts chapter 9 and 10,
  • 00:13:34.150 --> 00:13:36.090
  • and the script gets flipped.
  • 00:13:36.100 --> 00:13:39.060
  • The Jewish people aren't set aside by any stretch
  • 00:13:39.070 --> 00:13:42.170
  • of the imagination, but the door gets opened to everybody else.
  • 00:13:42.180 --> 00:13:48.180
  • You should be saying amen, most of you, at this point.
  • 00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:53.050
  • But I want you just to, real quickly, I know the narratives
  • 00:13:53.060 --> 00:13:55.190
  • are familiar to you.
  • 00:13:55.200 --> 00:13:57.000
  • I'm not gonna belabor them.
  • 00:13:57.010 --> 00:13:58.100
  • Acts 9, this is Saul on the road to Damascus.
  • 00:13:58.110 --> 00:14:00.240
  • He's collected all the Christ-followers he can get
  • 00:14:00.250 --> 00:14:03.210
  • his hands on in Jerusalem, and he's gotten so many
  • 00:14:03.220 --> 00:14:06.070
  • promotions because of it, now he's gettin' letters to go
  • 00:14:06.080 --> 00:14:08.230
  • to other cities.
  • 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:10.040
  • He's gonna go--he's going non-local.
  • 00:14:10.050 --> 00:14:14.250
  • He's planning branches of hatred, and he's on his way
  • 00:14:14.260 --> 00:14:18.290
  • to Damascus.
  • 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:21.110
  • And it says, "Suddenly, a light from heaven flashed around him
  • 00:14:21.120 --> 00:14:23.250
  • and he fell to the ground and he heard a voice say to him, 'Saul,
  • 00:14:23.260 --> 00:14:26.150
  • why do you persecute me?'"
  • 00:14:26.160 --> 00:14:28.080
  • Who's talking to him?
  • 00:14:28.090 --> 00:14:30.260
  • Jesus.
  • 00:14:30.270 --> 00:14:32.190
  • If you remember the Book of Acts in Acts chapter 1, Jesus
  • 00:14:32.200 --> 00:14:35.070
  • ascended back to heaven.
  • 00:14:35.080 --> 00:14:38.070
  • And in Acts chapter 9, he's on the Damascus Road shakin'
  • 00:14:38.080 --> 00:14:41.270
  • the love of Pete out of Saul.
  • 00:14:41.280 --> 00:14:46.290
  • He's back!
  • 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:49.170
  • "What are you doing, son?"
  • 00:14:49.180 --> 00:14:52.040
  • "'Who are you, Lord?'
  • 00:14:52.050 --> 00:14:53.140
  • 'I'm Jesus, whom you're persecuting.
  • 00:14:53.150 --> 00:14:55.280
  • Now get up, and go into the city, and you'll be
  • 00:14:55.290 --> 00:14:58.070
  • told what you must do.'" See, I'm thinking pretty much Jesus
  • 00:14:58.080 --> 00:15:03.240
  • knew what he wanted him to do.
  • 00:15:03.250 --> 00:15:06.260
  • How many think that would be fair, right?
  • 00:15:06.270 --> 00:15:08.120
  • I'm not messing with the text.
  • 00:15:08.130 --> 00:15:09.230
  • I think Jesus knew right then and there, right in the dust
  • 00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:12.160
  • of the Damascus Road.
  • 00:15:12.170 --> 00:15:13.270
  • Got his nose in the dirt, "Are you listening to me, boy?"
  • 00:15:13.280 --> 00:15:19.030
  • See, if I'm in charge of discipline, I'm going to give
  • 00:15:19.040 --> 00:15:20.260
  • him the rest of the story, "Before I let you up,
  • 00:15:20.270 --> 00:15:22.260
  • let me tell you."
  • 00:15:22.270 --> 00:15:25.040
  • "Sir, yes Sir!
  • 00:15:25.050 --> 00:15:26.140
  • Lord!"
  • 00:15:26.150 --> 00:15:28.230
  • But that's not what Jesus does.
  • 00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:30.030
  • He said, "You get up and you go into the city and you'll get
  • 00:15:30.040 --> 00:15:34.250
  • your next step."
  • 00:15:34.260 --> 00:15:38.120
  • Alright, it seems odd to me.
  • 00:15:38.130 --> 00:15:40.030
  • I've got the man there.
  • 00:15:40.040 --> 00:15:41.130
  • How about telling me what I want to know?
  • 00:15:41.140 --> 00:15:44.040
  • How many of you've said, "Lord, if you'll just tell me
  • 00:15:44.050 --> 00:15:47.180
  • everything you want me to do?"
  • 00:15:47.190 --> 00:15:50.120
  • Do you know what a bad request that is?
  • 00:15:50.130 --> 00:15:55.240
  • I did a wedding couple of weeks ago.
  • 00:15:55.250 --> 00:15:57.040
  • Imagine if you could sit down with a couple, their last
  • 00:15:57.050 --> 00:16:00.110
  • premarital session, and you could show them a highlight
  • 00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:03.150
  • video reel of their marriage.
  • 00:16:03.160 --> 00:16:09.160
  • And we think we'd have less weddings.
  • 00:16:12.030 --> 00:16:15.200
  • What if we had a new couple, she's pregnant.
  • 00:16:15.210 --> 00:16:18.240
  • Oh?
  • 00:16:18.250 --> 00:16:20.210
  • And you could show 'em the video reel of everything that's
  • 00:16:20.220 --> 00:16:24.040
  • coming.
  • 00:16:24.050 --> 00:16:26.200
  • God in his mercy and his grace gives us the next step.
  • 00:16:26.210 --> 00:16:29.110
  • That's all you need to go to town.
  • 00:16:29.120 --> 00:16:31.190
  • In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias.
  • 00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:36.020
  • "And the Lord called to him in a vision, 'Ananias?'
  • 00:16:36.030 --> 00:16:38.100
  • 'Yes, Lord?'
  • 00:16:38.110 --> 00:16:40.070
  • 'Go to the house of Judas and ask for a man from Tarsus
  • 00:16:40.080 --> 00:16:44.060
  • named Saul.
  • 00:16:44.070 --> 00:16:45.170
  • He's praying.
  • 00:16:45.180 --> 00:16:46.270
  • In a vision he's seen someone named Ananias come and place his
  • 00:16:46.280 --> 00:16:49.180
  • hands on him.'" And Ananias understands God's not
  • 00:16:49.190 --> 00:16:53.190
  • up on social media, doesn't always catch the news,
  • 00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:57.280
  • so Ananias needs to bring God up to speed on current events.
  • 00:16:57.290 --> 00:17:04.010
  • Ananias answered, "I've heard many reports about this man
  • 00:17:04.100 --> 00:17:08.230
  • and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.
  • 00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:11.030
  • And he has come here with authority from the chief
  • 00:17:11.040 --> 00:17:12.230
  • priests to arrest all who call on your name."
  • 00:17:12.240 --> 00:17:14.280
  • Saul's a bad man.
  • 00:17:14.290 --> 00:17:16.080
  • Before he ever gets to Damascus, the Christians in the city know
  • 00:17:16.090 --> 00:17:18.120
  • he's coming for them.
  • 00:17:18.130 --> 00:17:22.180
  • Ananias is trying to remind the Lord, 'cause clearly he's
  • 00:17:22.190 --> 00:17:25.150
  • been thinking about other parts of the globe, and he's trying
  • 00:17:25.160 --> 00:17:29.030
  • to bring him up to speed on Damascus.
  • 00:17:29.040 --> 00:17:34.230
  • "But the Lord said, 'Go!
  • 00:17:34.240 --> 00:17:36.050
  • The man is my chosen instrument to carry my name
  • 00:17:36.060 --> 00:17:39.030
  • before the Gentiles and their Kings.'"
  • 00:17:39.040 --> 00:17:43.010
  • Gentile, in the New Testament, is everybody who's not Jewish.
  • 00:17:43.020 --> 00:17:45.150
  • "Before the Gentiles and their Kings, and to all the people
  • 00:17:45.160 --> 00:17:49.000
  • of Israel."
  • 00:17:49.010 --> 00:17:51.250
  • So, Ananias goes and prays for him.
  • 00:17:51.260 --> 00:17:54.020
  • Again, this isn't the story the way I would have written it.
  • 00:17:54.030 --> 00:17:56.240
  • Saul is an angry, murderous, hater of Jesus and any who
  • 00:17:56.250 --> 00:18:00.110
  • follow him.
  • 00:18:00.120 --> 00:18:02.000
  • He has some crazy gifts.
  • 00:18:02.010 --> 00:18:04.080
  • Has a stunning intellect.
  • 00:18:04.090 --> 00:18:06.260
  • He's been trained since he was a child in the Laws of Moses
  • 00:18:06.270 --> 00:18:10.110
  • and the practice of Judaism.
  • 00:18:10.120 --> 00:18:12.250
  • He's had the best teachers and the best training.
  • 00:18:12.260 --> 00:18:15.120
  • He's a Roman citizen.
  • 00:18:15.130 --> 00:18:16.220
  • He's uniquely positioned.
  • 00:18:16.230 --> 00:18:18.030
  • He has authority over the whole Roman Empire.
  • 00:18:18.040 --> 00:18:21.110
  • See, if I'd been writing this narrative, and I'd have been
  • 00:18:21.120 --> 00:18:23.030
  • God, I'd have thought, "You know, that one's a murderer.
  • 00:18:23.040 --> 00:18:26.020
  • I'm going to give those crazy gifts to bury.
  • 00:18:26.030 --> 00:18:31.070
  • I mean, after all, if I made one, I'll make another."
  • 00:18:31.080 --> 00:18:35.190
  • But the beauty of God, the freedom in Jesus, is he
  • 00:18:35.200 --> 00:18:40.250
  • takes you and me in our brokenness, in all that we are
  • 00:18:40.260 --> 00:18:45.030
  • not, in all of our failures and all of our junk,
  • 00:18:45.040 --> 00:18:51.030
  • and transforms us into something uniquely valuable in the eternal
  • 00:18:51.040 --> 00:18:57.030
  • Kingdom of God.
  • 00:18:58.100 --> 00:18:59.260
  • In the first chapter of 1 Corinthians, it says he does
  • 00:18:59.270 --> 00:19:02.080
  • that so that he's the one who gets the glory.
  • 00:19:02.090 --> 00:19:06.110
  • So, I think one of the reasons were frustrated is you and I are
  • 00:19:06.120 --> 00:19:08.080
  • still trying to do things for which we think we get
  • 00:19:08.090 --> 00:19:10.080
  • the glory.
  • 00:19:10.090 --> 00:19:11.260
  • God wants to do something in you and through you that
  • 00:19:11.270 --> 00:19:14.020
  • everybody go, "Whoo!
  • 00:19:14.030 --> 00:19:15.220
  • That had to be God."
  • 00:19:15.230 --> 00:19:20.080
  • There's a component of this that is beyond me, and it's
  • 00:19:20.090 --> 00:19:22.210
  • beyond time.
  • 00:19:22.220 --> 00:19:24.240
  • Look, I'm workin' for somethin' that's ahead of me.
  • 00:19:24.250 --> 00:19:29.150
  • You know the New Testament says that run in such a way as to win
  • 00:19:29.160 --> 00:19:31.290
  • the prize, 'cause not everybody gets a prize.
  • 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:36.190
  • Do you know God's not a socialist?
  • 00:19:36.200 --> 00:19:42.200
  • Let that settle in for a minute, it's the truth.
  • 00:19:45.050 --> 00:19:48.000
  • God's not gonna treat everybody the same.
  • 00:19:48.010 --> 00:19:51.230
  • When he's building houses for you next, everybody's not
  • 00:19:51.240 --> 00:19:54.160
  • gettin' the same one.
  • 00:19:54.170 --> 00:19:57.070
  • I can prove it real quickly.
  • 00:19:57.080 --> 00:19:59.080
  • It says in Philippians 2 that God gave Jesus the name that's
  • 00:19:59.090 --> 00:20:01.210
  • above every name.
  • 00:20:01.220 --> 00:20:03.020
  • That at the name of Jesus, every knee would bow.
  • 00:20:03.030 --> 00:20:04.160
  • Jesus got first, so you're not gonna get that.
  • 00:20:04.170 --> 00:20:10.170
  • There's a reward.
  • 00:20:14.150 --> 00:20:18.100
  • You're gonna have a little bit of a dream in your heart.
  • 00:20:18.110 --> 00:20:20.010
  • "God, I wanna honor you."
  • 00:20:20.020 --> 00:20:22.130
  • It's not about stadiums filled with people or arenas or lots
  • 00:20:22.140 --> 00:20:25.100
  • of notoriety or havin' more followers in the social media
  • 00:20:25.110 --> 00:20:28.200
  • than anybody else.
  • 00:20:28.210 --> 00:20:30.010
  • If you're faithful in the assignment God has given
  • 00:20:30.020 --> 00:20:31.280
  • you, he will reward you.
  • 00:20:31.290 --> 00:20:36.140
  • Paul said, "There is in store for me a crown
  • 00:20:36.150 --> 00:20:39.040
  • of righteousness."
  • 00:20:39.050 --> 00:20:42.100
  • And when he said that, he's a prisoner in jail with--his
  • 00:20:42.110 --> 00:20:46.140
  • back is rippled with scar tissue from the beatings he's taken,
  • 00:20:46.150 --> 00:20:50.000
  • and the churches he's planted you wouldn't want to visit.
  • 00:20:50.010 --> 00:20:56.010
  • And he said, "There's a crown of righteousness for me."
  • 00:20:57.180 --> 00:21:00.130
  • Don't let go of that God-dream in your heart.
  • 00:21:00.140 --> 00:21:06.130
  • Number four, you've got to expect more than others think
  • 00:21:06.140 --> 00:21:09.170
  • is possible.
  • 00:21:09.180 --> 00:21:12.250
  • You've got to expect more.
  • 00:21:12.260 --> 00:21:14.050
  • You keep your heart open to that God component.
  • 00:21:14.060 --> 00:21:17.270
  • God and you make a big difference.
  • 00:21:17.280 --> 00:21:21.080
  • Paul, when he's on trial before Agrippa, his life is
  • 00:21:21.090 --> 00:21:23.240
  • in the balance, and he's given his testimony, the boy's
  • 00:21:23.250 --> 00:21:27.020
  • unrelenting, the man.
  • 00:21:27.030 --> 00:21:30.290
  • "Then Agrippa says to him, 'Do you think in such a short time
  • 00:21:31.000 --> 00:21:32.290
  • you can persuade me to be a Christian?'
  • 00:21:33.000 --> 00:21:34.140
  • And Paul says, 'Short time or long, I pray God that not
  • 00:21:34.150 --> 00:21:37.140
  • only you but all who are listening today, become what I
  • 00:21:37.150 --> 00:21:39.240
  • am, except for these chains.'" Not much backup in Paul.
  • 00:21:39.250 --> 00:21:45.250
  • He's got an expectation.
  • 00:21:46.040 --> 00:21:47.140
  • I attended Oral Roberts University once upon a time,
  • 00:21:47.150 --> 00:21:51.090
  • and I don't know how many of you remember Oral Roberts, but he
  • 00:21:51.100 --> 00:21:53.010
  • used to have these one-liners, you know, "Something good is
  • 00:21:53.020 --> 00:21:57.030
  • gonna happen to you."
  • 00:21:57.040 --> 00:21:59.290
  • Well, on both sides of the basketball court in big
  • 00:22:00.020 --> 00:22:02.180
  • six-foot letters was "Expect a miracle."
  • 00:22:02.190 --> 00:22:05.290
  • I always thought that was a little demeaning
  • 00:22:06.000 --> 00:22:07.090
  • to the athletes.
  • 00:22:07.100 --> 00:22:10.020
  • Expect a miracle.
  • 00:22:10.030 --> 00:22:12.140
  • But from this season in my life, I'm thankful for his boldness.
  • 00:22:12.150 --> 00:22:17.260
  • Now, we would mock him as students.
  • 00:22:17.270 --> 00:22:20.260
  • I know what you do when you leave here.
  • 00:22:20.270 --> 00:22:26.120
  • One of 'em was breakthrough from Heaven in '77,
  • 00:22:26.130 --> 00:22:29.080
  • so we made one up.
  • 00:22:29.090 --> 00:22:31.080
  • Expect a mate in '78, she'll be fine in '79.
  • 00:22:31.090 --> 00:22:37.090
  • And I missed oftentimes what he was trying to put
  • 00:22:39.100 --> 00:22:41.090
  • in front of us.
  • 00:22:41.100 --> 00:22:45.020
  • He had tuberculosis as a child.
  • 00:22:45.030 --> 00:22:49.030
  • Came from the poorest of settings, and he watched God
  • 00:22:49.040 --> 00:22:53.030
  • take a broken body and a life with seemingly little promise
  • 00:22:53.040 --> 00:22:59.040
  • and used him to impact a generation for the gospel
  • 00:22:59.100 --> 00:23:01.230
  • of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:23:01.240 --> 00:23:05.100
  • Don't apologize because of your God-dream.
  • 00:23:05.110 --> 00:23:09.180
  • Don't be embarrassed.
  • 00:23:09.190 --> 00:23:10.280
  • There'll be folks that'll make fun, people close to you, people
  • 00:23:10.290 --> 00:23:12.200
  • you're sacrificing to give an opportunity to.
  • 00:23:12.210 --> 00:23:15.090
  • I was one of those.
  • 00:23:15.100 --> 00:23:18.240
  • More than half of my tuition came from dollars he raised
  • 00:23:18.250 --> 00:23:22.040
  • with his phrases, like, "Expect a miracle," and, "Something good
  • 00:23:22.050 --> 00:23:24.240
  • is gonna happen to you."
  • 00:23:24.250 --> 00:23:26.050
  • And I didn't have the good sense not to criticize him.
  • 00:23:26.060 --> 00:23:32.060
  • You keep expecting God to be God anyway.
  • 00:23:32.290 --> 00:23:38.070
  • Don't you let the critics and the selfish and the unwise
  • 00:23:38.080 --> 00:23:44.000
  • knock you off the path.
  • 00:23:44.010 --> 00:23:46.040
  • Expect more than others think is possible.
  • 00:23:46.050 --> 00:23:48.020
  • And finally, you're gonna have to work more than others think
  • 00:23:48.030 --> 00:23:49.260
  • is necessary.
  • 00:23:49.270 --> 00:23:53.030
  • Folks, there are things God will not do for you.
  • 00:23:53.040 --> 00:23:57.220
  • Work's not particularly fashionable these days; it's as
  • 00:23:57.230 --> 00:24:00.060
  • if somebody else should do it.
  • 00:24:00.070 --> 00:24:03.100
  • We want to be visionaries, and I don't know what we want to be,
  • 00:24:03.110 --> 00:24:05.220
  • but we don't want to work.
  • 00:24:05.230 --> 00:24:09.020
  • I still think callouses are something to be proud of.
  • 00:24:09.030 --> 00:24:14.010
  • You need some place in your life where work may not in the moment
  • 00:24:14.020 --> 00:24:18.120
  • feel rewarding but require a commitment and a diligence.
  • 00:24:18.130 --> 00:24:24.130
  • I've discovered something: For excellence, you'll pay
  • 00:24:27.170 --> 00:24:29.130
  • on the front end.
  • 00:24:29.140 --> 00:24:31.220
  • You're going to make the investment before you see
  • 00:24:31.230 --> 00:24:33.120
  • the dividend.
  • 00:24:33.130 --> 00:24:35.150
  • Lots of people are willing to get in line at the end when
  • 00:24:35.160 --> 00:24:37.160
  • the dividends are being handed out.
  • 00:24:37.170 --> 00:24:40.000
  • But the question is, are you going to make the investment
  • 00:24:40.010 --> 00:24:42.120
  • when it's not a sure thing?
  • 00:24:42.130 --> 00:24:44.290
  • Are you going to redirect time and energy and effort?
  • 00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:47.030
  • Are you gonna say no to other invitations and focus yourself
  • 00:24:47.040 --> 00:24:49.250
  • on the Lord or effort when others are using the opportunity
  • 00:24:49.260 --> 00:24:53.080
  • to recreate or to indulge themselves?
  • 00:24:53.090 --> 00:24:58.290
  • This isn't beyond us.
  • 00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:00.120
  • It's not so complicated we can't understand.
  • 00:25:00.130 --> 00:25:02.180
  • We've got to make the decision that we're gonna
  • 00:25:02.190 --> 00:25:04.060
  • pursue God's best.
  • 00:25:04.070 --> 00:25:07.050
  • You matter!
  • 00:25:07.060 --> 00:25:09.000
  • You are incredibly important to him.
  • 00:25:09.010 --> 00:25:12.160
  • Don't let the hardness of the way, the difficulty
  • 00:25:12.170 --> 00:25:14.270
  • of the season dissuade you.
  • 00:25:14.280 --> 00:25:17.290
  • The one who promised, he's faithful.
  • 00:25:18.000 --> 00:25:21.200
  • And I don't care how much carnage is in your past, God is
  • 00:25:21.210 --> 00:25:24.230
  • expert at taking an angry, murderous, violent, failed
  • 00:25:24.240 --> 00:25:30.240
  • people and transforming them into gems for his purpose.
  • 00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:37.000
  • That's how we got in the house.
  • 00:25:38.200 --> 00:25:44.040
  • male announcer: From the opening chapters of the Bible
  • 00:25:44.050 --> 00:25:45.260
  • to the end, the spirit of God and the power of God are
  • 00:25:45.270 --> 00:25:48.250
  • connected, even synonymous.
  • 00:25:48.260 --> 00:25:50.280
  • And we all at some point have places in our lives where it
  • 00:25:50.290 --> 00:25:54.000
  • would take no less than the power of God to bring
  • 00:25:54.010 --> 00:25:56.020
  • an acceptable outcome.
  • 00:25:56.030 --> 00:25:57.190
