Tony Evans on Faith

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “just have faith.”  What does that mean?

Here’s what Scripture has to say: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1, NIV

So, how do we have faith and trust in God?

“The question that you have to ask with faith is, Does God have integrity?” says Dr. Evans.

Integrity. Can God be trusted? Does He fulfill His promises?

Let’s look at a couple of examples from Scripture:

·      Protection to Noah’s family during the Flood (Genesis 6:18; Genesis 8:18)

·      A son to Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 17:19; Genesis 21)

In these examples, we see that God has fulfilled His promises. We also know that He is constant:

"I the LORD do not change…” Malachi 3:6a, NIV

“God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” Numbers 23:19, NIV

As a God who has proven Himself constant, faithful, and trustworthy, we can trust Him with our lives as well.

Reminders of our personal encounters with God also point us back to a stance of faith. Reflect today on how God has provided for you in a way that only He could.

May we remember that faith—believing that God is who He says He is and will do what He promises to do—and then acting accordingly, is what is pleasing to God.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6, NIV
